There's a kind of perverse marketing genius at work in this cheesy sci-fi hit from 1995 in which scientists create a half-human, half-alien woman named Sil (Natasha Henstridge) who's capable of morphing from a slimy, tentacled creature into a blonde babe with the body of a Playboy centerfold. This makes it easy for Sil to lure gullible guys who are only too willing to indulge her voracious mating urge, realizing too late that sex with Sil is anything but safe. As the body count rises, a handpicked team of specialists tracks the alien's killing spree, but their diverse expertise is barely a match for the ever-morphing Sil. Borrowing elements of the Alien movies (including bizarre alien designs by Swedish artist H.R. Giger) and spicing them up with some tantalizing nudity, Species is a wet dream for creature-feature fans--kind of like watching a sci-fi vampire fantasy while browsing through the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. --Jeff Shannon
Description
When a beautiful human-alien hybrid (Natasha Henstridge) escapes from observation, scientist XavierFitch (Ben Kingsley) dispatches a crew of experts to find her before she is able to fulfill her horrific purpose: to mate with unsuspecting men and produce offspring that could destroy mankind. As her deadly biological clock ticks rapidly, Fitch and his team are hurled into a desperate battle in which the fate of humanity itself hangs in the balance!

Blu-ray Quality Review.......2007-06-11
While the film itself is a love it or hate hit kind of thing (as far as the story and actors and whatnot), I would like to rate the actual quality of the disk and what separates it from the dvd version.
The Blu-ray version of this movie is much better than all the other version. Better quality images, better quality sound, and you even get a cool glimpse into Giger's creative process with a extra on the blu-ray that shows him creating the "evil train" sequence.
Personally, I liked the movie - but I think what most people want to know is, is it worth buying the blu-ray version vs. the dvd version and the answer to that question is DEFINATELY!
Lousy plot and bad acting.......2006-10-26
This movie has the plot of a porno. If you evaluate this movie as a porno, then it's lousy because there isn't much there. If you evaluate it any other way then it's also lousy. The plot of the movie is that a woman is an alien on a hunt for men to mate with, and she kills a fair number of them. Lots of car crashes and helocopter chases.
A good, but derivative piece of sci-fi/horror fluff.......2006-08-07
1995's Species was a studio's attempt to replicate the start of a new sci-fi/horror franchise like the one begun by Ridley Scott's Alien. Roger Donaldson was tapped to direct this attempt with a cast that included Sir Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen, Marge Helgenberger, Forrest Whitaker and Alfred Molina. The lucky gal who gets to play the role of Sil --- the half-alien, half-human hybrid --- fell on the stunning and gorgeous shoulders of Natasha Henstridge.
Species pulls from so many different sci-fi/horror films and shows from the past that it's hard to find anything original in the story. There's stuff from Alien, The Hidden, and even some episodes of The X-Files. The one original twist in this derivate film was the plot of an alien race sending over the genetic markers of its race and instructions on how to recombine it with human DNA to create a form of hybrid. Why the scientists decided to go through with such a seemingly dangerous task is known only to the writer who put pen to paper to create the screenplay. The acting by the select group of experts (Madsen, Helgenberger, Molina, Kingsley and Whitaker) are ok enough and none embarrass themselves in the end. Henstridge does a fine job of being sexy and hot. It helped that she pretty much was naked through most of the film, or at least put herself in situations to be naked.
The art design of Sil as the evolved alien hybrid came courtesy of the great Swiss surrealist, H.R. Giger who also did the design for the alien creature in Alien. Giger's biomechanical designs have always been disturbing and beautiful at the same time and he didn't disappoint with his design of Sil. If there was a quibble on Sil's final design it was that it still resembled abit too much of the alien design in Ridley Scott's Alien. But it was still great to see H.R. Giger still creating such wonderful artwork and designs for people to see. His popularity has always been mostly composed of the elite circles of the artworld and those small, loyal art groups with a penchant for the surreal, weird and disturbing.
In the end, Species was a good sci-fi/horror that didn't bore too much and for those who enjoy their gore this film had its equal share of the red stuff. Gratuitious nudity and sex from Natasha Henstridge as Sil the alien hybrid and the excellent designs from H.R. Giger gives this film enough good things to look at. It doesn't bring anything new and pretty much reuses alot of other things from other movies, but Species was good enough albeit derivative of better past films and shows.
Not just stupid, but predictable & boring.......2006-01-08
I can only imagine that the 4 & 5 star reviews for the stinker of a movie are coming from adolescent boys who are still enthralled by the nekkid alien/human hybrid who apparently can't be bothered by the inconvenience of clothing. As for the rest of us, the pervasive nudity will cease to be novel after the first 5 minutes or so. What we are left with is a lame & predictable paint-by-numbers horror flick which apparently wants to be "Alien," but seems content merely to steal liberally from an infinitely better movie.
This is so predictable that you could stop watching after the first hour, but why would you want to waste that first precious hour anyway? Just avoid the whole thing unless you are just now reaching puberty.
sex and alliens.......2006-01-07
well, it seems that they had to make a movie where Alliens and humans have sex, it was creepy, it was gross, it was fun!

Romeo Is Bleeding is the flawed black comedy from director Peter Medak (The Krays) about a bad cop who slowly gets his due. Gary Oldman plays yet another quirky character, this time a New York detective on the take. His life goes haywire as he squares off with a Russian hit woman. Despite an intriguing cast and great dialogue, the movie becomes a bit too eccentric for its own good as several actors have nothing to do. The high point is Lena Olin, who finally has a role she can sink her teeth into: her zesty, monstrous assassin, Mona Demarkov, is one of the great movie villains. --Doug Thomas
Description
Gary Oldman delivers an uncanny performance (The New York Times) and Lena Olin is 'the most astoundingly vicious and sexy female villain in movie history (Variety) in this spine-tingling, erotic film about a crooked cop and the sadistic hit woman who lures him into a lethal dance of deceit. Co-starring Annabella Sciorra, Juliette Lewis and Roy Scheider, Romeo Is Bleeding is a mind-blowing, crazy, outrageous movie (WNBC-TV)! Jack Grimaldi (Oldman) leads more than a double life: He's a veteran cop, a two-timing husband and a corrupt mob informant. But when the Feds enlist him to protect Russian gangster Mona Demarkov (Olin) at the same time that the Mafia orders himto kill her, Jack's world of greed and lust begins to crack. Complicating this already dangerous situation is Mona herself, a seductive schemer who entangles Jack in a deadly, depraved plan of her own!
Customer Reviews:
Romeo Is Bleeding - Bogart meets Lucretia McEvil.......2007-06-05
The words 'wildly entertaining' describe Romeo is Bleeding to perfection. The narration by Gary Oldman takes you back to old Philip Marlowe films. And, of course, Oldman's portrayal of Jack Grimaldi is, as usual, absolutely perfect. He'll have you rooting for his "good-guy doing naughty things" character - and he does some really naughty things. Gary Oldman fans have GOT to see this one. Lena Olin is the most frightening, the most enjoyable villainess you'll ever see, bar none. She's simply fantastic.
Dark and Extraordinary.......2007-04-20
If you are a Gary Oldman fan, you MUST see this movie! This is one of his finest performances, subtle and completely believable.
The story opens with Oldman as a cheating husband and corrupt cop, but twists and turns after that, incorporating subtle overtones of the paranormal and many ethical and moral dilemmas in a complex story of survival. Great stunt work, too. This one will grip you from beginning to end!
Outstanding Film-Noir Thriller!.......2006-10-18
I can certainly see where the critics were wrong on this one. I viewed this film when it was first released, and thought it was great! Not just the suspense that is in the film, but the entire originality and creepy eeriness of the film too! When I saw reviews of this film a week later blasting the film, I knew then [always did] that critics were usually off the mark. That is why I pay no heed to critics when they criticize or rave about films. This is one hell of a film. Jack (Gary Oldman) is a police sergeant. As a detective on the force he earns added income by accepting payoffs from a certain mobster named Falcone (Roy Scheider). Jack has inside information on the Witness Protection Program, and knows when certain individuals are being relocated. He gives this information to Falcone, whenever he requests it. In turn, Falcone rewards Jack very handsomely with large cash payments.
However, problems occur when the latest request by Falcone to give him information on a Russian hitwoman (Lena Olin), backfires on Jack. Jack finds himself in hot water. Not only with the department, but the Russian hitwoman and Falcone too! This is no ordinary hitwoman. Mona (Lena Olin) gives a superb acting performance in this film. There are some shocking scenes involving Mona [no spoilers] that are very disturbing. What ensues are fast-paced, creepy and totally unsuspecting scenes throughout the film. Jack knows he has messed up, but it is too late to turn back. And Mona, he finds, is more than he bargained for. She is also more than Falcone bargained for too! This film is highly recommended. However, it may appeal to certain audiences only. I recommend the film highly, however, you may want to rent it first to see if it appeals to you. I found the film great in its entirety, and Lena Olin's character is one hell of a strange one. [Stars: 5+]
This Ain't Scooby-Doo.......2006-07-27
I'll start by saying that I am not a big fan of Gary Oldman, but boy does he give a terrific performance in this movie. He played a cop on the take and not a very sympathetic one at that. He crosses paths with a very nasty Lena Olin who must have had the time of her life playing the Russian assassin. The ending was fantastic. Parts of the movie were pretty gory, but I really believe necessary. This was just an excellent film. Don't pour yourself a bottle of wine to watch this though. Pop a brew and grab a bag of chips..
Cutting of Crucial Scene Ruined Movie For Me.......2006-05-16
Romeo is Bleeding could have been a quintessential new film noir classic. The plot line was thrilling, and Lena Olin was particularly mysterious and devious as the Russian hitwoman. Needless to say, Gary Oldman's performance was stellar as the duplicitous cop. However, the DVD version cuts a very crucial scene. I saw this movie at the theatre when it was released. There is a scene in which Gary Oldman shoots Lena Olin in the arm before putting her in handcuffs; instead of going to a hospital, they get into a fight. While he's driving, she's in the back seat of the car attacking him with the only weapons available to her at the time--her legs. Eventually Gary Oldman crashes his car, and Lena Olin runs away from him (handcuffed, no less),then, rather than go to a hospital, she retreats to her apartment where she cuts off her own arm with a power saw. This scene was brutally shocking, but it augmented the sinister dynamic of Lena Olin's character. More importanly, it explained how she became armless. This was the kind of scene that put the viewer on the edge of his seat anxiously awaiting the unfolding of the next event. Cutting that particular scene caused major incongruity because when Gary Oldman and Lena Olin crash the car, she fights with him and then runs away, hands cuffed behind her back, and at that point, the movie immediately cuts to a scene in which her arm is missing, with nothing in between--no explanation for the missing arm. Anyone who hasn't seen the movie before is going to be confused. The viewer will be left wondering what the heck happened to her arm. This will leave you very frustrated because for the remainder of the film you'll be wondering how she became an armless hitwoman. That was one scene that should not have ended up on the cutting floor. The film editors made a huge error in judgment.

Confidential) and writer David Koepp (Spider-Man). Financial analyst Michael Boll (Spader) seems to have everything: brains, money, a socially connected fiancée and a blindingly bright future. Then he meets Alex (Lowe), an impeccably dressed drifter with fatal charm and an insatiable appetite for wine, women and danger. Alex befriends Michael and takes him for a walk on the wild sidebut Michael soon discovers that there's a terrible priceto pay for life in the fast lane, because hanging out with Alex...can be murder!
Customer Reviews:
Lowe's best film performance..........2007-05-30
Saw this movie when it was originally released- shortly after the sex tape weirdness of the '88 Democratic convention; it was serenely ironic that at the precipice of career suicide by Lowe, he would in this film provide his best performance. Although recent work in West Wing & Brothers & Sisters has helped him reclaim a bit of appreciation, this character still resonates as a well-played, against type evildoer. A tight script, another high quality performance by Spader and an ecellent soundtrack all add to the guilty pleasure.
Chaos.......2007-04-26
...almost got lost in the review. Rob Lowe is young, cunning.
James Spader, youthful and with generosity-but naiive!!!
Spader's "stumbling block" becomes his tumbling "block" as Rob Lowe lets loose with his own brand of mischief, style and demeanor. This is the devil at ease. The duo take the lost way to hell. Watch who ya meet...I guess you never know.
Underrated, creepy and edge of your seat film........2006-08-17
I had never heard of this film before, or maybe I did in passing but never paid any attention to it. I recently picked it up at a video store and have already watched it twice. Lowe is definitely convincing in his role as a bad guy, and him and Spader definitely complement each other in this movie, even though they are opposing forces. A definite must see!
"Elvis has left the building!".......2006-03-22
This movie really creeped me out the first time I watched it, which was when i was about ten years old. now that i am thirteen, it doesn't seem that bad, but it still gives you a case of the creeps. One of the scariest, worst situations you could possibly be in is being framed for murder. you can't go to the police because there's no evidence that points to someone else and the person would probably kill you and your family/friends.
as for this movie, the actors were womderful! Rob Lowe was creepy, and James Spader was very convincing as a boring geek. I would easily reccommend this movie to anyone who loves a good thrill!!! ; )
Classic Rob Lowe and James Spader.......2005-05-17
An excellent study of two characters! Rob Lowe and James Spader make a perfect contrast to one another. Lowe captivates and seduces Spader by offering and delivering this weak yuppie his dreams in life. "Tell me what you want Mick" and freeing him from what he fears the most. But there is a price to pay. The chemistry that these two actors create throughout the movie alone is worth seeing it. But there is a lot more. The supporting actors deliver big time! Spader's main rival at work, his secretary, and especially the saultry Lisa Zane as an underground club slut that gets caught up in Rob Lowe's plan. There is also great music by the "Negresses Vertes." It will leave you wanting more!

The cadets head to Moscow to help the Russians deal with the Mafia.
Customer Reviews:
Best of the Series!.......2007-05-23
Tagline: Kicking buttski. Making you laughski. The Academy is backski!
If you haven't seen this movie, you really should do yourself and your loved ones a favor and check it out. I know a lot of people think the Police Academy series wasn't too great after the first one, but they are dead, dead wrong.
First of all, the loss of Steve Guttenberg as Mahoney is no great one, as his character was silly and unbelievable. This film puts our favorite recruits in Moscow (which is near Russia), and has a delightful fish-out-of-water premise. Now, for those that haven't seen the prequels, you should know that the Police Academy men and women are a ragtag group of ne'erdowells who use plain moxy and hijinks to solve crimes. In many ways it's similar to the Law and Order TV show, but much much funnier.
You will be amazed at all the silly sound effects that the sound effect policeman makes, and you will be charmed by the general buffoonery that the rest of the gang makes as they try policing Moscow. It may be out of their jurisdiction...but this movie proves that there is no jurisdiction for funny.
On a more serious note, this movie came out at the height of what is known as "the Red Scare" in America, and instead of dealing with the tensions between two world superpowers with heavyhanded, treacly drama like Warren Beatty's ultra-conservative "Reds," Police Academy's Mission to Moscow makes excellent socio-political commentary under the guise of a lighthearded romp, and it pays off in spadeskis! (If you want to turn American words into Russian words, the best way is to add "ski" to the end of them. Ditto for Polish things).
This movie is a treat for almost all of your senses!!!
MADNESS IN MOSCOW.......2005-04-17
I've only seen two of the POLICE ACADEMY movies; the original and this one. This surely didn't inspire me to run out and get 2 through 6, but it had enough laughs to entertain me. Most of those laughs came from the crusty George Gaynes; Michael Winslow's attempts to disassemble Christopher Lee's mental state; Ron Perlman's over the top performance as the head of the Russian Mafia; and a few other moments of inspired hilarity. The POLICE ACADEMY series never achieved the quality of NAKED GUN or other spoof movies because it never knew when to stop, and it used redundancy instead of innovation. It seems they are remaking the original for release in 2006; wonder if it'll be any good? Who knows, but really, if you want to wasted 90 minutes with a few good laughs, this will do.
Charles Schlatter joins the team in Moscow........2005-02-24
This movie went straight to video.
After 10 years of Police Academy films, we finally have reached the last one for a while until 2006.
Original cast members returning: G.W. Bailey, George Gaynes, David Graf, Michael Winslow and Leslie Easterbrook.
Charles Schlatter is the new guy (who later got busy in CBS Diagnosis: Murder tv series). This time their special skills are needed in Moscow, Russia were they meet Christopher Lee, Ron Perlman, Claire Forlani and many Russian actors.
What put the screenwriters in a Russian mood? Perhaps they should have gone back to Miami Beach or visited Las Vegas?
Highlight: Leslie Easterbrook is really singing.
Followed by an animated cartoon series in 1988 and a Police Academy tv series in 1997.
Not THE worst anticomedy ever vomitted out, but..........2004-09-14
...that's only because that shameful position belongs to "2001: a Space Travesty", the most horrible celluloid garbage in history. However, "Police Academy VII" comes very close. In fact, I feel these two "films" should share the title. Additionally, they're both excellent contenders for the title of the worst film, not just comedy, ever made. ("Manos", you say? "Manos" is an example of highly professional and entertaining filmmaking compared to PA7 and 2K1ST...)
WORST FILM EVER.......2004-04-27
Jesus, it kills me to give it a star, but unfortunately there isn't a no star option. Worst film I've ever seen.
