American audiences used to the fable-like Iranian films of Abbas Kairostami (A Taste of Cherry) and Jafar Panahi (The White Balloon) may be startled by Dariush Mehrjui's devastating modern melodrama, Leila. Set firmly in the urban world of contemporary Tehran, this story of a couple pressured by family and tradition into destroying their happy union is a window into a world uneasily straddling the past and present. Happily married but childless, Leila and Reza are pressured by Reza's mother to keep the family name alive. When Reza refuses to take a second wife (polygamy is still legal in Iran) the mother-in-law goes to work on Leila, beating down her resistance with a mix of pleading, haranguing, and outright lies, until the couple limply gives in.

This splendid adventure-fantasy from 1990 was adapted from Roald Dahl's book and directed by maverick British filmmaker Nicolas Roeg, who turned out to be a perfect (if seemingly unlikely) interpreter of Dahl's fiendishly clever tale of witchcraft in contemporary England. Scary, funny, and wildly entertaining, it's all about a young boy named Luke (Jasen Fisher) whose parents have died in a tragic accident, and whose grandmother (Mai Zetterling) takes him to a posh hotel in England, where a secret coven of witches is holding its annual convention. The Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston, in a scene-stealing performance) has decreed that all children in England be turned into mice, and Luke and his pal Bruno (Charles Potter) are the first victims on the list. That's when the movie magicians from Jim Henson's creature shop have their work cut out for them, turning Luke and Bruno into clever little rodents and The Witches into a dazzling display of imaginative special effects, using a seamless combination of real mice and superb animatronic puppets. Director Roeg doesn't compromise the sinister edge of Dahl's story, but comedy gets equal time from the brilliant cast including Brenda Blethyn (from Secrets and Lies and Little Voice), Rowan Atkinson (of Black Adder and Mr. Bean fame), and Jane Horrocks (Little Voice) as the Grand High Witch's beleaguered assistant. Based on Jill Murphy's book, this charming movie is set in an English boarding school for witches--complete with orange and black school uniforms, broom-flying exercises, and potion assignments for lab. The incompetent student of the title, Mildred, is played by a fetching young Fairuza Balk. Diana Rigg is the nasty head teacher, Tim Curry the (oddly) idolized Grand Wizard, and TV's Facts of Life maven Charlotte Rae does double duty as the school's kindly dean and her evil witch twin, who's bent on taking over the school. Directed by Robert Young, this 68-minute video features less than state-of-the-art effects and several songs that stop the action--most bizarrely an outdoor assembly performance by Curry that turns into a weird music video. Still, preteen girls will identify with the beleaguered heroine who overcomes her wickedly snooty rival, a teacher who doesn't believe in her, and a band of dastardly witches and, of course, saves the day. Fairy-tale Paris doesn't get more enchanting than Billy Wilder's Love in the Afternoon, an ode to picnics on the grass and champagne at the Ritz. Audrey Hepburn (who had already made Sabrina with Wilder) is at her best as the inexperienced cellist with a fascination for millionaire American playboy Gary Cooper. Maurice Chevalier (who else?) is Hepburn's father, a private detective with ample evidence of Cooper's crowded history of l'amour. Alongside the sheen of the romance is Wilder's unerring sense of craftsmanship; watch how inanimate objects such as a liquor tray, a white carnation, or the little dog in the suite next door are developed into sublime running gags. The age difference between the two leads has often been questioned, but perhaps this is what gives the gossamer material the whiff of welcome melancholy. The final three minutes leave no doubt that Wilder hatched the best endings in Hollywood history. --Robert Horton

A cheesy little comedy..........2007-01-26

... but DeVito's speech at the shareholder's meeting was required viewing in one of my MBA classes. The movie can be a good primer on hostile takeovers, how and why they are done. The sugar-sweet happy ending was a let-down (I guess I'm a greedy uncaring goob), but the lessons of the movie weren't lost.

A great movie to be used in teaching business. The movie shows how the changes in the enviroment affect the companies that don't innovate themselves. And it's good to show how the capitalism drives de growth of economie.

Seasonal Classic.......2005-10-30

I'm an avid movie maniac. I have certain films that I can only watch at certain times of the year, and do, every year. Other Peoples Money, starts off my fall movie viewing, after Halloween of course. I love the new England Autumn charm of this film. The story is good, dialogue clever and the chemistry between Miller and DeVito is scary. An unlikely romanic couple if ever there was. A Classic in my book!

OPM- Used in my Business Management classes..........2005-10-10

There is no nudity in this movie but there are some vaguely sexual discussions. Even some adults might miss the true points being made but you may want to consider that before allowing children to see OPM.

That said, this is the best business movie I have ever come across. When I first saw it in the theater I was all for Gregory Peck's character until DeVito's speech at the end which is truly thought provoking. In teaching business management at the University of Southern Mississippi, I have my students watch the whole thing at the beginning of the semester to acquaint them with the notion that those who have the goal of making money are not all bad. For some reason, even though they want to be in business, my students too often think of running a business and making money as grubby, nasty chores performed by evil people. The characters in OPM force them to examine those beliefs.

Other reviewers have made the point that this a funny movie and it truly is. The humor is probably better appreciated by adults than children since it is not of the slapstick kind but rather uses plays on words.

While the characters in OPM are somewhat one-dimensional, what I enjoyed is that they are always true to themselves. When offered a million dollars by Piper Laurie's character to go away , DeVito responds "It is not enough." She was being true to her goals of minimizing conflict in her company and he was being true to his goals of maximizing his wealth. When asked why, he gives an answer that shows that he doesn't accept the idea that he is the bad guy in this drama.

I particularly appreciated the movie not making DeVito's character out to be a totally bad guy. That is a real failing of most movies coming out of Hollywood. Other reviewers have talked about how his relationship with Penelope Ann Miller's character shows his humanity but I think people should take note of his relationship with his chauffeur and his secretary and their loyalty to him. He makes use of his reputation as a tough guy to serve his business needs but there is much more to the man.

All together, this is truly a great movie. It amazes me that it took so long for it to come out on DVD since it has all the stars in the world (DeVito, Peck, Miller, Laurie, Stockwell, etc.)

Other People's Money is a wonderful movie, full of smart dialogue, good music, and a terrific Danny DeVito performance. DeVito is his usual funny, and easy-going self, while Gregory Peck is a strong-willed patriarch. Very good stuff there. The weakest performance is from Penelope Ann Miller, who isn't really convincing as the corporate attorney, but the material is so good that it saves the movie. This is a 5 star film, however, it loses a 1/2 star, because of the last scene, which feels a bit tacked on. Otherwise, a smart and funny film from the director of Moonstruck.
