Imaginatively rendered but slightly chilly, this 1951 Disney adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic is also appropriately surreal. Alice (voiced by Kathryn Beaumont) has all the anticipated experiences: shrinking and growing, meeting the White Rabbit, having tea with the Mad Hatter, etc. Characterization is very strong, and the Disney team worked hard to bring screen personality to Carroll's eccentric creations. For a Disney film, however, it seems more the self-satisfied sum of its inventiveness than a truly engaging experience. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars enduring entertainment.......2007-05-17

Alice in Wonderland includes story lines from Through the Looking Glass so I had my class read both books before showing the movie. The tale was written as a summer diversion for a precocious child and, done as a musical cartoon, provides a willing suspension of disbelief. I also teach Spanish and played a segment in Spanish for those classes. The dialogue was beyond my second year students who soon lost interest.

I loved this animated cartoon, but hadn't seen it in such a long time I had forgotten just how strange it was until my 3 year old granddaughter asked, "Why are the flowers yelling at Alice?" It is definitely a cartoon for older children and adults, knowing its whimsical nature.

The DVD was fine, but the description of the produce is not correct. I returned the item twice because it did not have the slipcase cover as it is described neither both time that the item was sent it to me!

3 out of 5 stars A confusing masterpiece!.......2007-03-14

It's a Classic movie, a masterpiece but I think it's also one of the most confusing movies for a child, dialogues and situations are not easy to understand for a small kid.

Alice returns from Wonderland only to discover she's on the wrong side of her living room mirror at the beginning of the second half of Irwin Allen's 1985 production, with teleplay by Paul Zindel and songs by Steve Allen (the three-hour film was broken into two parts for video, the first title being Alice in Wonderland). Before you can say "curiouser and curiouser" the jabberwocky is after her. It chases Alice back to a strange land where life appears to be one giant game of chess with pieces portrayed by the likes of Carol Channing and Harvey Korman. The 7-year-old longs to be home, but that doesn't stop her from enjoying some song and dance with Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme), watching a bout between the lion (Ernest Borgnine) and the unicorn (Beau Bridges), or being rescued by the White Knight (Lloyd Bridges). Despite the oddly low-tech visual effects from Star Wars's John Dykstra--the jabberwocky is so clearly a guy in a dragon suit--this thrillingly kitschy movie ably entertains. Where else will you see Merv Griffin as a train conductor, Sally Struthers and Donna Mills catfighting with Vegas-worthy flower headdresses, and Jonathan Winters as a crabby Humpty Dumpty before the fall? Adults who fondly remember the '70s and '80s and children 4 and older should enjoy this version of the fabled tale. --Kimberly Heinrichs

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Trip Down Memory Lane.......2007-05-30

I was pleasantly surprised at the up-dated quality of the video itself. Sure enough, it actually DOES have both the first and second movies on the one disk. It operated wonderfully, even in my cheap dvd player, and I was able to use the closed captions from my tv so I didn't miss one crazy name or word! The whole experience was exactly what I had pictured for strolling back to my childhood.

watching this movie made me feel like i was 10 yrs old again - which is when i originally seen it on tv. now, both my kids (12 yr old girl & 5 yr old boy) LOVE watching this movie over & over again. It's just the best!!! my daughter says its like the wizard of oz, but better...

This is an impressive-looking version of Lewis Carroll's story originally produced for NBC-TV. Dreading a singing recital at her parents' lavish home, Alice falls into a strange world in pursuit of a large White Rabbit. The talented child actor Tina Majorino (Corrina, Corrina) plays Alice with all the good graces but mostly wanders through the story unquestioningly. Carroll's tale of whimsical, illogical adventures is a field day for designers Roger Hall and Alan Tomkins, costumer Charles Knode, Jim Henson's Creature Shop, and director Nick Willing (Photographing Fairies. Influenced by Time Bandits and Labyrinth (the latter also designed by the Henson company), the film has a splendid array of effects, many dealing with multiple perspectives as Alice constantly changes sizes. The highlight is Whoopi Goldberg as the Cheshire Cat, a seamless mix of cat and comic. Martin Short as the Hatter and Mirandra Richardson as the Queen of Hearts seem to be having the times of their lives. This is not the definitive version of Carroll's tale, and, like the popular Disney animated version, combines some elements of Carroll's sequel, Through the Looking Glass. It is perhaps better viewing for the fan that has seen another version of the tale or read the book. --Doug Thomas

4 out of 5 stars Family movie.......2007-05-04

Great job for the non-cartoons! We enjoyed this movie way better than a cartoon. It told a whole story instead of a piece!

5 out of 5 stars I really liked this movie!!!.......2007-04-23

I have never read the book or was never exposed to the story of Alice in Wonderland before seeing this movie. When I bought this movie, I thought that it was about time that I did see the "timeless" story that everyone was talking about. I was very happy that I did. I did really enjoy this movie. I am not one to compare the movie to the book when I make reviews if I read the book. Books and movie can be totally different from each other because of different interpretations of the script. Give this movie a try and see what you think. I am very glad that I did and am very happy that I own a copy of it as well.

2 out of 5 stars Misses the Point.......2007-04-20

I found it very annoying that the makers of this version felt the need to have everyone keep teaching little lessons and reciting little morals to Alice. As another reviewer has said, that is contrary to the whole spirit of the books and contrary to their original intent. (A similar outrage was perpetrated by the makers of the TV movie "The Odyssey," where--contrary to Homer--we see Odysseus having to learn little life lessons before he is allowed to go home.) What I did like, though, was some of the casting, especially Whoopi Goldberg as the Cheshire Cat and Sian Phillips as the Red Queen. For those who want a good version of one of the Alices, the one starring Kate Beckinsale is actually rather good. It keeps to the events of "Through the Looking Glass" and it has a good absurdist tone.

2 out of 5 stars Letdown by Hallmark.......2007-03-23

Hallmark Entertainment has made many movies from children's books, and this probably one of the worst. Based on both "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" this movie stars many of the familiar faces of Hallmark movies and children's movies, such as Gene Wilder, Miranda Richardson, Martin Short, and Whoopi Goldberg. The lead character of Alice is unfortunately played by an actress that is not so good. The movie revolves around her, and she seems to move from one scene to the next with little emotion or expression. Even the crying scenes seemed fake. Where is Dakota Fanning when you need her? The cinematography, costume and set design are spot on, as usual for Hallmark movies, but the soundtrack was unnoticeable. The only bright spot was the engaging song by Gene Wilder's character. All in all, quite boring.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-08

Being a huge fan of Alice in Wonderland I love this movie. While it ads some of the Through the Looking Glass it is still follows the book almost perfectly. I felt the characters were played well and the actors and actresses (mostly unknowns to me) fit their parts.

The dark underside of Boogie Nights is tracked in Wonderland, a sleaze-filled look at the notorious "Wonderland Murders" of 1981. The movie attempts to explain how the legendarily endowed porn actor John C. Holmes was involved in the killings, while deliberately suggesting the difficulty of knowing the truth of a murky case. The police procedural aspects turn out to be less intriguing than the weirdly hapless domestic life of Holmes (Val Kilmer at his most dazed), who despite his promiscuity continues to rely on his starchy, clean-cut wife (an unflattering role for Lisa Kudrow, but the most interesting character in the picture). Well-known actors--notably a near-unrecognizable Dylan McDermott--slouch through the story, which rather distracts from the aggressively realistic approach. In the end, the unclean aura makes one yearn for the stylized ingenuity of Boogie Nights, or at least a reason to be watching this story this way. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not Kilmer's best work.......2007-05-15

The life and times of John Holmes defines public perception of the adult entertainment industry. You occasionally come across an article or two nowadays talking about how its merely a business and its practitioners are really just entrepreneurs, how only a select few engage in the types of behavior exhibited by Holmes back in the 1970s and 1980s. What was that behavior? You already know. Think about your perceptions of the adult film industry. It's loaded from top to bottom with strung out junkies, misogynists, and women abused as children now taking their internal pain out on themselves. Producers and distributors don't escape scorn, either. They're abusers of female flesh always looking for the next buck, always looking out for some fresh perversion to put up on the screen in order to lure in customers. Drugs, anti-feminists, abusers, predators--not a pretty picture. John Holmes fit the bill when it came to drugs and other assorted criminal enterprises. After his career in the business faded, he sank into a personal hell of cocaine and heroin addiction. His death from the AIDS virus in 1988 only confirmed what many already thought about this sordid and seamy lifestyle.

"Wonderland" touches on one of the sleazier parts in John Holmes's long slide into oblivion. As we soon learn from the film, a heinous crime occurred in a known drug den located in the Laurel Canyon section of Los Angeles. On July 1, 1981, someone or several someones broke into the house and severely bludgeoned all five occupants with steel pipes. Four of them died. The fifth victim, a woman, survived with serious injuries. A police investigation into the crime discovered that nearly everyone associated with the house was deeply involved in drugs. Then an informant named David Lind contacted the authorities. He told a strange story about the former film star John Holmes. According to Lind, Holmes frequented the drug parlor on a regular basis and was actually in the house the night of the murders. Moreover, he helped the gang in the house plan a drug robbery involving a big time cocaine dealer named Eddie Nash. Holmes helped eyeball Eddie's pad and then gave the information to his friends. They robbed the drug dealer, but Nash found out who was responsible and retaliated by putting out a hit on the residents of the house. When the police finally caught up with John Holmes, he offered up a different version of events.

The movie "Wonderland" presents to its audience both accounts of what happened in the house that night. Before we get to the good stuff, the film sets up the story. Holmes (Val Kilmer) spends all of his time with his underage girlfriend Dawn (Kate Bosworth) trying to score dope. Oddly enough, he still maintains contact with his estranged ex-wife Sharon (Lisa Kudrow), which often leads to very strange scenes when Holmes shows up with his girlfriend. Sharon will eventually play a small, albeit important, role in what happens later. Then "Wonderland" treats us to endless scenes of drug dealing and drug using at the house. It's fairly clear in at least one of the film's narratives that Holmes isn't well respected by the gang living in the house. They think he's a mooch and a loser whose only worth to them is one of cruel entertainment. For example, he's forced to show a couple of girls his...equipment...much to the amusement of the others. It's hard to see this pathetic loser actively participating in a series of brutal murders. According to David Lind (Dylan McDermott), however, that's exactly what happened. Holmes was not only there; he actively participated in the killings.

I think that summary pretty much nails it, although I wouldn't bet any money on it. That's the main problem with "Wonderland". The narrative style of the film incorporates at least two versions of events, and these stories move around in odd circles that make it tough for a viewer to keep track of the proceedings. Did Eddie Nash force Holmes to roll over on his friends? Or did Holmes decide to rat them out for his own personal gain? That's the crux of the story. We don't receive a definitive answer in the movie largely because the legal system never solved the case. Don't worry about the confusing plot, though, because the film does a good job of looking at the sordid underside of life in Los Angeles. The set pieces look great, and the performances work wonders. I wasn't that impressed with Val Kilmer as the main character; he's done much better work in other films, and he doesn't seem to have much to do here. Lisa Kudrow spellbinds in her small role, and Eric Bogosian exudes menace as the dangerous Eddie Nash. Look for appearances from Christina Applegate, Carrie Fischer, and Janeane Garofalo in smaller parts.

We've got a big slab of DVD to dissect here, folks. "Wonderland" as a two-disc set boasts a ton of supplements that will keep you busy LONG after the credits roll. You want a commentary track? We get one with director James Cox and some dude named Captain Mauzner. We also get deleted scenes, lots of short interviews with the cast, a brief Court TV segment dealing with the case, and trailers. The best extras are a long documentary on the life of John Holmes and a grisly 24 minute long LAPD crime video showing the inside of the house after the murders. We see the bodies and the blood splatter in nauseating detail, and it's nasty stuff. Keep that in mind if you've got a weak stomach. Ultimately, I'm going to give "Wonderland" three stars. I thought the film was only so-so. It's definitely not Kilmer's finest hour. Also, I don't really care much about the deaths of a bunch of low-life scumbags. Sue me. Still, you could do worse than give "Wonderland" a watch.

5 out of 5 stars Two movies for the price of one............2007-03-07

Based on the true story of the "Wonderland Murders", this set is two DVD's. Watch disk two first to get a background and overview of the life and times of John C. Holmes, then watch the movie, Wonderland. You'll have a much greater understanding of the movie.

4 out of 5 stars What ever happened to John Holmes?.......2007-01-28

"Wonderland" is for all those out there that ever wondered what became of Johns Holmes after his iconic/illustrious career as America's "Reigning King of Porn" came to an end. "Wonderland" covers the events such as Holmes' drug addiction, affair with a minor, his estranged relationship with his wife who wouldn't divorce him, and his involvement in the gruesome quadruple homicides on Wonderland Drive in the Hollywood Hills during the 1980s.

Great acting on the part of all those involved in this movie. This is not a pretty film and it takes a serious look at the events surrounding the Wonderland Drive murders and Homes' role in the crimes themselves.

4 out of 5 stars can't explain the fascination.......2007-01-05

I can't explain the fascination some of us have with '70's porn, John Holmes, and the Wonderland murders. John Holmes had some life. As we all know, he was not the most handsome man, but he did have that one "asset" that made him famous and made him stand out above many others.

I don't want to give another synopsis of the movie. I read a lot of the reviews by movie critics, and I thought that most were a bit too harsh on the movie. I personally liked it a lot. The story is interesting and the movie is entertaining. Val Kilmer is probably better looking that Holmes ever was, and he did an adequate job of portraying a strung out porn "star" that was past his glory days and on a downward spiral. People in the adult entertainment business often seem to be self-destructive and live very sad lives after all. Perhaps they have nothing to go to once they are past their "prime" in the business. The movie has an overall darkness to it. Holmes was obviously involved with some very bad people. I think I tend to believe his version of events.

The best thing about the DVD is the bonus material that is provided. There are some awesome things here, including a documentary about the life of John Holmes. There is also some police footage of the Wonderland crime scene. I also want to add that I loved the title sequence at the beginning of the movie. The Bad Company song "Shooting Star" couldn't have been more appropriate. Obviously Holmes was a "porn star" and not a rock star, but the song parallels his own life so much.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Entertaining, and Frightening.......2006-10-08

WONDERLAND is probably the BEST all-around drug movie ever depicting the LA sex & drug scene of the 1970's-1980's. Oddly enough, at least for me, the scariest scene of the entire movie is a deleted one where Eddie Nash turns on John Holmes to the base (crack) pipe for the first time. The actors, screenplay and direction are all top notch. A very entertaining, yet frightening movie based on a true story.

A lovely, lilting soundtrack of samba and bossa nova melodies gently guides this charming movie about Erin (Hope Davis), a young nurse adrift in her life. When her boyfriend, a hyperactive political activist played by the amazing Philip Seymour Hoffman (Boogie Nights, Happiness), leaves her, Erin struggles to find serenity on her own. Meanwhile, her mother schemes to find her a new boyfriend by placing a personal ad for Erin without her knowledge. Next Stop Wonderland juxtaposes this with the story of Alan (Alan Gelfant), a plumber struggling to get a degree as a marine biologist. The movie weaves all sorts of hints about fate and destiny, so it's no surprise at the end when Erin and Alan meet--but the fun is in getting there. In addition to the well-drawn characters and sharp, clever writing (the sequence of personal-ad dates that Erin goes on is both funny and painful), the movie is full of visual grace notes. For example, while at a bar, Alan spills a drink on a newspaper; the wet newsprint becomes translucent and reveals a photo of Erin that was taken at an aquarium fundraiser and printed in the society page. But before Alan even sees it, his friends scoop up the wet paper and throw it away. These moments have a casual, tossed-off air that evokes a lightly mystical sense of how our lives float on a thousand invisible coincidences. More than anything else, the movie spotlights Hope Davis's intelligence and quiet soulfulness. This wonderful actress has been appearing in small roles in Hollywood features (Arlington Road, Mumford) that don't do her justice; Next Stop Wonderland lets her glow. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars next stop romance.......2006-11-11

This is a romantic film, but it's not gooey. You actually care about the characters in this movie. What a treat. And the musical background is heaven on earth.

4 out of 5 stars Fate Versus Happenstance. Which Do You Believe?.......2006-07-24

Hope Davis has become what I like to call a hidden success. Her movies don't make a gazillion dollars at the box office and you'd probably hardly notice her if she passed you on the street. But what she does -- and does well -- is create lovable and memorable characters on celluloid. Most recently she was paired with Greg Kinnear in THE MATADOR, a role in which her underused talents still shone brightly with every scene she appeared.

I decided to watch NEXT STOP WONDERLAND for the sole purpose of checking to see how well Mrs. Davis stood as an actress in a starring role. I wasn't disappointed.

The story is that of a nurse named Erin (Davis) who comes home one day to find her boyfriend, Sean (Philip Seymour Hoffman, CAPOTE) moving out. Angry and spiteful, Erin quickly decides that being alone is okay. In fact, she firmly entrenches the philosophy of aloneness within herself ...until...

Erin's domineering mother, Piper (Holland Taylor, THE TRUMAN SHOW), discovers her daughter's recent break-up and places a personals ad in the newspaper for her. Initially upset by this, Erin eventually decides to take on the task of dismissing all of the loathsome men who try to court her. The comedy here is striking and philosophical as the men do whatever they can to get into her pants only to be rebuffed by Erin's formidable intellect.

On the other side of Boston (where this story takes place) we find Alan Monteiro (Alan Gelfant, TURN OF FAITH), a plumber turned marine biologist who volunteers at the local aquarium. He's struggling with debt, school (still working on his biology degree), and an aggressive younger classman who's infatuated with him. Strangely enough, too, is the fact that his brother is one of the guy's trying to bed Erin via the personals ad.

As Erin and Alan mingle within their own circles, they come close to orbiting one another but never quite make contact. Brief glances, telephone calls that pass them by, invitations to the same restaurant parties, the two seemed destined to fall into one another's arms ...yet these encounters slip past. It's wonderfully frustrating to watch, and these "almost encounters" are never forced.

But in the end, director Brad Anderson doesn't let us down. Serendipity intervenes and the two strangers end up hugging one another on a transit train after a strange set of circumstances pulls them together.

Romantic comedies are okay if done right. You know the type that kind of make you feel, eh, just okay; You've Got Mail, Pretty Woman, Sleepless In Seattle. But this flick gives you more for less. Made as an independent film on a $1 million budget, Hope Davis' excellent acting and the perfect script make for some thought-provoking and downright funny moments. While those other RomComs I mentioned have a basic "feel-good" to them, NEXT STOP WONDERLAND has much more. The philosophy, romance, and comedy all build to a very satisfying conclusion and one that will invite discussions about the probabilities of fate versus happenstance.

5 out of 5 stars "Next Stop" is a great stop on the romantic comedy highway.......2005-08-28

Great romantic comedy about fate, relationships, and what makes two people right for each other. Hope Davis plays Erin, a nurse in Boston who is mourning the loss of her relationship with her eco-activist on-again off-again boyfriend. He's left her many times before, but this time vows this is the final send-off. Leaving with their futon strapped to his car, Erin retreats into the comfort of solitude, listening to the wonderful Bossa Nova of Jobim, and reading her father's poetry. In another part of the city, Alan, played by Alan Gelfant with an easy-going, likeability, is a 35-year old plumber who's going to school to become a marine biologist. Not wanting to fall into the bland stability of the plumbing business, Alan wants to make a better life for himself, one that is both meaningful and that he's passionate about. It's both Alan and Erin's journeys of self-discovery, trying to control their own destinies, that makes their paths cross, again and again, so that the film becomes a question of fate vs. the ability to choose. The film raises this question many times, from Erin's decision to go on dates with several men who have responded to her personal ad (one of the most hilarious sequences of the film), to Alan's decision to steal the Boston Aquarium's mascot blowfish, Puff, in an effort to get the local "lender", from whom he's borrowed money for school, off his back. If it sounds like the stories of Alan and Erin seem like two different movies, don't despair. The filmmaker and co-screenwriter, Brad Anderson, has very seamlessly and cleverly interwoven the stories so that when they ultimately meet, it's not only believable, but we realize that it must be fate.

5 out of 5 stars I Love this Movie.......2005-08-13

If ever there was a movie I had a soft spot for, it would be Next Stop Wonderland. If I'm down or need to relax or just want to sit back and see familiar sights from the time of the movie, I pop this in and immediately feel better. It's like therapy to me.

In some ways it's tough for me to really define the movie or the characters & I don't want to give it all away. Erin struggles to overcome some of the losses in her life and to find a way to move forward while Alan is an individual who fights to fulfill his dreams, which he figured out later on in his own life, while maintaining his integrity. But the movie is so full of coincidences and near misses for these two very honest individuals that you are left waiting for the moment when they come together, and when they do, it is actually just the right time. From the dating service, to Alan seeing her while in the fish tank, to the photographer putting her in the picture... there are so many things in this movie that you may have missed after seeing it the first time that you'll catch the next few times around.

I definitely recommend the movie. I love it. Can't say that enough. And it takes place in Boston, and you get a good view of some of the sights and places in Boston. I've actually been the the Burren & still sometimes hang out in the Somerville/Cambridge area. And the New England Aquarium really has been renovated since then (1998) and is off of the Blue Line (the Wonderland stop is actually the last stop on the Blue Line - there's your symbolism!).

I also love the movie because the soundtrack, done by Claudio Ragazzi and Arto Lindsay, is nothing short of stellar. The original score perfectly fits the mood of the CD for both characters and other than the classic Bossa Nova by Elis Regina and Astrud Gilberto, you have some very nice works by Bebel Gilberto (daughter of Miucha and Joao Gilberto) before her feature album came out, that I haven't seen her release elsewhere, including a sensational version of "One Note Samba/Girl from Ipanema" with the amazing work of Vinicius Cantuaria.

5 out of 5 stars Warm and lovely Ms. Hope + bossa nova = sublime.......2005-02-09

Love this from start to finish. Smart, warm, and sublime. Bossa nova is utilized perfectly as Hope Davis (who has never looked lovelier) gives a terrific performance. You just love watching and listening to her here. Can we a get a deluxe edition please?

Product Description

This all-star musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll s classic tale will delight children and adults alike. Employing virtually every prominent British performer of its time, from pre-Bond girl Fiona Fullerton as Alice and pre-Phantom Michael Crawford as the White Rabbit, to comic luminaries Peter Sellers and Dudley Moore, this magical and intoxicating version explores Alice s dizzying adventures in the rabbit hole both faithfully and metaphorically as coming of age story.

This hugely entertaining and amusing film is so imaginative and compelling, and the music so memorable, that you will want to watch it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Better than given credit for.......2007-03-10

I feel some of the other reviews here are unjust and over exagerated. There were two places in the film that in total lasted maybe about five minutes where the sound was distorted, but not badly since you could still understand the characters clearly (ex. one area had a warpy vhs noise and the second had a bit of low static). The costumes were well selected, but I felt a better job could have been done on the rats and the lizard (you can see a gap where the costume ends on his face). This version follows the book well, though it left out a favorite qoute about the taste of the liquid in the first scene that she drinks from the "drink me" bottle. I also felt that the British accents in the movie enhanced the film. I recomend this to fans and people who aren't overly critical of films.

    2 out of 5 stars I couldn't even finish it.......2006-12-20

I love Alice, and I love low-budget works full of heart, but this production was so relentlessly mediocre that I just couldn't bear to finish it. The songs are lifeless and as poorly paced as the rest of the performance, and the script lacks any spirit; overall this production adds nothing new to the story, yet fails to convey the charm of the book (or, for that matter, nearly any other production I've seen). As another reviewer mentioned, the DVD itself is unimpressive - the chapters are, as near as I could tell, either random or simply timed, without regard to content. If this production is a familiar favorite from your childhood, it may be worth something (unless the DVD transfer is as disappointing as it seemed to me); if you're looking for something new, look elsewhere.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting all-star British adaptation, but DVD transfer is unwatchable.......2006-09-30

This is a very interesting adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, featuring a plethora of major British actors from the time this movie was made. Note that today's younger audience, weened on an MTV diet of rapid cuts and incredible CGI, may find this slow. But if one can get beyond that, it's most definitely worth a watch.

That said, this DVD transfer is basically UNWATCHABLE. It's not clear what source they used for the transfer, but there are TERRIBLE audio pitch problems throughout the movie, with wow and flutter horribly apparent. This is particularly problematic for a movie like this with a significant orchestral and vocal score. If you have any sense of pitch, you'll find yourself pulling your hair out listening to the off-key strings! The video quality is pretty horrible, as well--worse than standard cable. A real travesty.

4 out of 5 stars The Spooky But Definitive Live-Action Version Of Alice In Wonderland.......2006-07-26

The wonderful Victorian classic, Alice's Adventures In Wonderland was very first published in 1865. Written by acclaimed author, Lewis Carroll (real name - Charles Dodgson), this fantasy-adventure story has been adapted to the stage and screen countless times.

There's the familiar, misreably underated Walt Disney animated classic of Alice In Wonderland whilst there are a listless number of live-action adaptations that have largely failed to truly capture the spirit and flavour of Lewis Carrolls vivid vision of Wonderland.

This 1972 adptation is something of an exception and stands out as the best live-action version of the book. Director William Sterling, shrewdly manages to encapsulate the dark, frightening vision of Wonderland as dreamed up by Lewis Carroll.

Fiona Fullerton heads the cast making a pleasantly bland Alice. What Fullerton succeeds in doing is taking with you with her on a magical journey, allowing you to view the strange adventures through her eyes, evoking a feeling of
being drawn into a childs dream that escalates into a nightmare.

Fiona Fullerton is not least given noble support from a stellar cast that were some of the best of that era. The multi-talented Michael Crawford assumes the role of the jittering White Rabbit. Crawford playes the White Rabbit with a certain flair, relying mostly (and appropriately) on his inimitable comic skills.

Sir Robert Helpmann (who is more well known for his famous role as the child catcher in another excellent classic childrens movie, Chitty,Chitty, Bang, Bang) shines as the notorious Mad Hatter during the manic Mad Hatter's tea party sequence. Helpmann's comic facial expressions and
spirited playing makes the sequence work extremely well. Helpmann shares the spotlight in this madcap scene with Peter Sellers who gives a fine supporting turn as the March Hare whilst Dudley Moore causes some amusement as the poor, put-upon Dormouse.

Sir Ralph Richardson delivers a fairly adequate performance as the Catepillar in a very vivid scene whilst Davy Kaye as the Mouse during the dreamy Caucus Race Sequence, playes the role with a degree of subtelty. Much more effective though is Dame Flora Robson, putting in a fantastic intepretation of the ferocious Queen Of Hearts
who is both comical and scary in the role.

Michael Jayston appears in the opening scene as Dodgson (Jayston) and Duckworth (Hywel Bennett)sit on a river bank one hot summers afternoon. It is here where Dodgson begins telling Alice the story of Alice's adventures underground.

The nightmarish Duchess and Cook sequence is ignited by a fittingly off-beat performance from Peter Bull as the Duchess. Patsy Rolands as the demented, pepper-loving, plate-throwing Cook takes this role to fabulous new heights!

The sullen, ever-crying Gryphon is played marvelously by Spike Milligan whilst Michael Hordern is equally excellent as the Mock Turtle. This fun sequence where Alice, the Gryphon and the Mock Turtle are seen running and dancing
their way round a deserted beach, is speeded up at points to add to its comical and magical effect. This scene is also accompanied by one of the very few effective songs of the saccharine soundtrack, Will You, Won't You Join The Dance?

Roy Kinnear is fabulous as the permanently grinning Cheshire Cat whilst other notable players in the more than capable cast include Dennis Price in a small but efficent role as the King Of Hearts, Rodney Bewes as the bumbling
Knave Of Hearts, Julian Chagrin as Bill The Lizard (seen during the scene where Alice has grown large and is stuck in the White Rabbit's house - Bill the Lizard attempts to slide down the chimney into the house but Alice then swiftly kicks him back up again), Freddie Earlle as Guinea Pig Pat (also seen during the White Rabbit's house scene), Ray Brooks as 1 of Spades, Dennis Waterman as 2 of spades and of course not forgetting twin brothers Frank and Freddie Cox who make the definitive Tweedledee and Tweedledum (characters that were taken from a segment in
Lewis Carroll's sequel, Through The Looking Glass And What Alice Found There - most stage and screen versions often tend to draw large segments from both Alice books).

Alice's Adventures In Wonderland (1972) draws on a somewhat dreamy, hazy-like effect that largely gives the film an intentionally dark, scary edge. It strikes an even balance between moments of fun, magical comedy to more frightening settings.

Most of the film is engaging and totally enchanting. the surreal sequence at the beginning of the adventure is one of the scenes that really stands out in my mind as it is doen so effectively. Alice wakes up in a giant story book
garden and spots the White Rabbit gazing at his waist watch. Alice proceeds to follow the White Rabbit into a long, dark tunnell. Keeping up with the whole familiar ethos of Alices In Wonderland's famous catchphrase, "curiouser and
curiouser", Alice continues following the White Rabbit unaware of the danger lying in front of her and then finds herself tumbling down a large rabbit hole which leads to the whimsical, topsy-turvy world of Wonderland. The score during this sequence is masterful and hauntingly
    atmospheric.

The Pool Of Tears sequence also works incredibly well where Alice finds herself in a large hall full of doors. A small door, to her delight, leads into a beautiful garden. It is here where she discovers potions and cakes that alternately make her shrink or grow large. At one point, Alice grows large and begins crying which subsequently leads to her shrinking and swimming in her own pool of tears.

Alice is washed ashore from the pool of tears and finds herself indulging in the Caucus Race with a mouse, dodo, owl, magpie, frog, duck and an eagle in a vastly trippy sequence! I've heard (as i'm sure you all have) various myths that Lewis Carroll was high on LSD at the time of writing the book. I have no idea whether this is true or not but you certianly can see peoples notions on this when you watch all the bizarre goings on in Alice's Adventures In Wonderland. I put it all down to a bizarre but great imagination on Lewis Carroll's part and this film merely reflects that. Even so theres something that distinctley gives me the creeps when watching scenes such as The Pool Of Tears and the Caucus Race.

Alice's Adventures In Wonderland (1972) is even more disturbingly surreal later on in the film such as the scene in the forest where a torrential storm occurs and a a giant black crow emerges from the gloomy sky ready to attack Alice.

The Duchess and Cook sequence also used to really give me the creeps when I first watched this at 4 years old back in 1983. There was just something eerie and nightmarish about the whole scene but again this ties in closley with the book. The Trial of the Knave Of Hearts is where it gets most off the wall and at the close of this scenes there are lots of swirling, hallucegenic close-ups of the characters. Alice, of course, then wakes up on the riverbank to discover it was all just a dream.

What compliments the mesmerising, hypnotic vibe of Alice's Adventures In Wonderland is a bewitching, hauntingly atmospheric score by BAFTA-winning, John Barry. The film also boasts maginificent cinematography from Geoffrey Unsworth which sticks closely to the original illustrations of the book. Some of the cardboard-like sets look far more suited for a stage production but many are eye catchingly beautiful.

Alice's Adventures In Wonderland (1972) is an extremely faithful adaptation that's most noble in its loyalty to the book. In that fact it deserved far greater recognition than it has, perharps, received. Widely regarded as the best live-action screen version by lovers of the book, it was still unfairly slated by critics of the day where some claimed it was too long, tedious and boring. To a point I can see where they're coming from so you really have to be in the right mood to take this film on. On the right day it proves a thrilling, almost hypnotic viewing experience (even though i'm 26 years old!).

In an attempt to ignite the films fortunes, Fiona Fullerton was being promoted as the new Julie Andrews (though Fullerton is a remarkable actress in her own right, this was something of an overstatement) but this did little to help the films fate. Making matters worse was Peter Sellers who blatantly criticised the film to the media before it had even opened at cinemas! Sadly Alice's Adventures In Wonderland did not endure the high Box Office turn over as anticipated.

It's true that Alice's Adventures In Wonderland (1972) is too slow and bland at points but on casting its shortcomings (which you can over-look) aside, it's most definitely worth a look. Fans of Alice In Wonderland that have not yet had the delight of watching this charming, atmospheric version, will be thoroughly enthralled.

    3 out of 5 stars A confusing masterpiece!.......2007-03-14

It's a Classic movie, a masterpiece but I think it's also one of the most confusing movies for a child, dialogues and situations are not easy to understand for a small kid.

Thomas and his train-yard pals wouldn't pout if Christmases on the Island of Sodor were a little less white. In each of the six story stops that make up Thomas' Christmas Wonderland, snow stalls or otherwise threatens to sabotage the perky cargo pullers' holiday plans. Everybody's stuck in Snow, a new story narrated by Alec Baldwin, so Rusty lifts his fellow locomotives' spirits by relating the tale of the year Skarloey was sidelined by an avalanche. In "Thomas & the Missing Christmas Tree," Thomas is enlisted to pick up the village tree when severe snowdrifts leave him stranded on a remote stretch of track. The title character in the "Terence the Tractor" segment teaches a teary-eyed Thomas a thing or two about how his "ugly" Caterpillar wheels come in handy when the uncharacteristically arrogant engine sets off without his snowplow. And in "Special Funnel," Peter Sam is relieved of the other engines' constant ribbing when he's rewarded with a deluxe-model funnel after a monster icicle snaps his formerly wobbly one off. Rounding out this festive feature is "The Snow Song," a musical chug through decked-out village station stops that celebrates the title character's pluck: the little blue train finds his way "Whistle blowing / Yes, it's snowing." Fans of the series ought to waste no time climbing aboard, and newcomers will be relieved to discover a well-rounded introduction to a range of train-yard friends. Ages 3 to 6. --Tammy La Gorce

My two sons both love to watch this DVD! They got it for Christmas and haven't stopped watching it. It's great for this cold time of year when they're stuck indoors. The bonus CD isn't bad either, just very short.

The kids loved this DVD on the long drive to Nana's house for Christmas. It won't get as much screen time as Sodor Celebration or the Best Of... DVDs because it is seasonal specific but it is a great treat for the holidays. *Very* happy it came with a CD sampler, the kids love the CD too!

    Frosty's Winter Wonderland
It's no secret that sequels to classic TV specials rarely stack up--they're usually guilty of getting too fancy with characters and story lines, causing irritating fissures to form in our perceptions of the originals. Lucky for a new generation of holiday viewers, that's not the case with Frosty's Winter Wonderland. In fact, lining up a Frosty double feature at home in which the original is directly followed by the new title is a fully cringe-free proposition, thanks mostly to the down-homey, pleasant narration of Andy Griffith and the near-perfect portrayal of the Frosty we all know and love by Jackie Vernon. The Wonderland dialogue doesn't trouble itself with tiresome throwbacks, and even the plot isn't overly ambitious: Frosty, lonely at the North Pole, is bent on keeping his famous promise to the kids that he'll be back again someday, so when the news of a snowstorm in their town reaches him, he waddles off. But once the belly-whopping's run its course, he's lonely again. The children, hoping to salvage Frosty's stay with them, hit upon a solution: they'll build Frosty a wife. Crystal fits every snowman's fantasy of a dream bride, but will jealous Jack Frost sabotage their wintry wedding? For all classic Christmas special fans who harbor hopes that the fun can continue, it's worth finding out. Kids 2 and older will love the songs and the still-intact dribbles of silliness. --Tammy La Gorce

    Twas the Night Before Christmas
Animators of all things Christmas, Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass (Frosty the Snowman) take on the famous poem by Clement Moore. Narrated by Joel Grey, the story opens on the night before Christmas, but the reading of the poem must be stopped when two creatures in the house begin to stir: family men Mr. Trundle and Father Mouse. Their restlessness stems from the fact that Santa is angry at the residents of Junctionville, returning all their letters without even opening them. The reason? Somebody wrote a letter to the editor of the paper saying that he doesn't exist. In an attempt to fix the situation, Mr. Trundle, a clockmaker, comes up with a plan to lure Santa into town with a clock that will sing an enchanting song at midnight. When the clock doesn't work on its first test, the townsfolk lose all faith in him. Turns out the cause of all the trouble is Albert, a book-smart young mouse who thinks he knows the truth about Santa Claus. There are a few good songs in the 23-minute program, whose the moral is: don't believe the kids on the playground if they say that Santa doesn't exist. --Andy Spletzer

    Product Description

Alice is a virginal librarian, cheerful and outgoing, who acts and dresses younger than her age. She rebuffs William, a suitor, because he's insistent on behavior she considers inappropriate: she's a prude. While daydreaming about reliving her life, a white rabbit taps her on the shoulder, and she follows him to Wonderland, where playful animals and people introduce her to her imagination and to pleasure. After encounters with the imperious Queen of Hearts, Alice decides that Wonderland may not be for her, and she longs for William.

    5 out of 5 stars A true classic.........2007-01-23

This top-grossing independent film is now available on DVD. "Alice in Wonderland", the first adult musical, has broken new ground. PLAYBOY covergirl, Kristine DeBell, considered by many to be the most beautiful girl in the world, can now be seen cavorting erotically with all the Lewis Carroll characters.

There has never been an erotic film that can come close to the production value of "Alice in Wonderland". It is a milestone in cinematic history, and is most certainly a true collectors item.
