Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Conceived by two master filmmakers, but essentially made by only one, Tabu is the last great silent film (released four years into the talkie era). Few classics have had a more fraught history, starting with the dicey notion of combining the radically different approaches of documentarist Robert Flaherty and supernaturalist F.W. Murnau. After selecting the South Seas locations, collaborating on the story, and doing some preliminary photography, Flaherty withdrew, leaving Murnau to realize this tale of forbidden love and implacable retribution in an earthly paradise. The results, ravishing to behold, complete a spiritual trilogy begun with Nosferatu (1921-22) and Sunrise (1927), Murnau's other films of young couples drawn asunder by phantoms. Floyd Crosby won an Academy Award® for his cinematography. The director himself was killed in a car wreck just before his film was released. All the more tragic that Murnau's original, uncut version was never seen till Milestone Film & Video's restoration in 1990. --Richard T. Jameson
Description
Filmed entirely in Tahiti, "Tabu" represents an unusual collaboration between legendary directors F.W. Murnau (Nosferatu, Sunrise) and Robert Flaherty (Nanook of the North). Two lovers are doomed by a tribal edict decreeing that the girl is "tabu" to all men. While the lovers' flight from judgment and the ultimate power of the tabu are reminiscent of Murnau's expressionist films, "Tabu" is all open air and sunlight, sparkling on the ocean and glistening on the beautiful young bodies of the native men and women. Now available completely uncensored and restored by UCLA, this cinematic landmark is one of the most gorgeous black and white films ever made, and was the 1931 Academy Award winner for Best Cinematography.

Mothra Vs Godzilla.......2007-06-10
I like the fact that Toho is releasing all there older Monster movies in a new dvd case.I look forward to seeing more of the movies being released so I can add them to my collection. One thing I would have liked to have seen with the movies being redone is to have the audio done in 5.1 dolby sound, than the standard audio format that they were originally done in.
the terror of the titles.......2007-05-28
This fine film is destroyed by the titles. Some are on the film itself and some are on the black band below the image. The former are hard to read. But worst of all, some are split between both of the above and will give you a horrible headache. Why doesn't anyone seem to care about the placement of titles? A fun film that deserves better.
This is how you do it!.......2007-05-23
This is one of the best re-issue DVD series I've seen in a long time. Classic Media knows what we want and gives it to us.
* A great-looking transfer of a classic film.
* Informative commentary
* Not too expensive
The best thing about this series of re-issues, is, of course, the inclusion of the dubbed American versions alongside the original Japanese versions. This allows the hardcore Godzilla fans to see the movies as they were originally made, while giving stoned couch potatoes the campy dubbed verisons they remember from Saturday afternoon Creature Features ("Hey look! His lips are moving but he's not making any sound! Haw haw haw haw!").
A lot of DVD companies would either confuse the consumer with two separate releases, or release "Deluxe 2-DVD" versions of every movie (as with the original Godzilla movie), but Classic Media gets it right by putting both versions on the same disc and releasing it at an affordable price (with great graphics to boot).
It doesn't hurt, either, that this is one of the best of the original Godzilla sequels, presented in all its fabulous widescreen Tohoscope glory. Even if you're just a casual Godzilla fan, this one belongs in your collection. As for me, I can't wait for the release of the Ghidorah movies and War of the Gargantuas later this year! Godzilla-lovers rejoice!
Classic Godzilla........2007-05-20
Classic Godzilla, one of the best Godzilla films ever. Much, much better than the 1998 Tri Star film, by miles...
Godzilla's Finest Hour.......2007-05-18
At long last American fans of Godzilla can affordably enjoy what many rate as their favorite Godzilla feature. This Sony/Toho Master Series release brings us both the classic AIP dubbed American release print titled Godzilla VS The Thing, and the original Japanese version Mosura Tai Gojira with english subtitles, for those who prefer authenticity. There are great extras including interviews and audio commentary by American Godzilla experts. It's priced irresistably at less than $20! I didn't wait on this one, and will always cherish it.

Description
It's King Kong to the rescue when a giant robot threatens to destroy Tokyo in the gripping King Kong Escapes! The action begins when the conniving Dr. Who builds a robot Kong in order to retrieve a highly radioactive element for his mysterious benefactor, Madame X. When the robot proves less than reliable, the devious duo scheme to kidnap the real Kong from his remote island home of Mondo. But interfering with their plans are the heroic trio of U.S. Cmdr. Carl Nelson, Lt. Jiro Nomura, and Kong's current crush, Lt. Susan Miller. It's up to them to outwit the greedy ape-nappers in this sci-fi adventure that takes Kong to unprecedented heights of excitement.
The two mightiest monsters of all time battle in the thrilling adventure classic, King Kong vs. Godzilla. When an underhanded pharmaceutical company goes to a remote tropical island to steal King Kong for advertising purposes, they get more than they bargained for when the gigantic ape attacks an unsuspecting village and an enormous octopus. Meanwhile, far below the sea, a submarine crew unleashes reptilian terror when they melt a block of ice and release the ferocious Godzilla from his icy lair. When both destructive monsters descend on Tokyo, it's a fight that holds the future of mankind in the balance in this knock-out film that was the first theatrical release to bring its larger-than-life contenders to the big screen in glorious color.
Customer Reviews:
Nice films, but just AWFUL DVDs!.......2007-06-16
These discs are terrible, although the tranfers may not be that bad, threre are no extras at all. No feturetts, no deleted Scenes, no Original Japaneses versions, not even Theatrical trailers. Unlike Sony who provide some features for there Godzilla titles, or Warner Brothers for there King Kong titles. Universal usauly provides wonderful extras for there DVDs and HD-DVDs. This is wrong!
There Really is a Mechi-Kong!.......2007-03-21
When I was a kid and saw King Kong Escapes, I was mesmerized by the Mechi-Kong robot. What a great idea! He looks so cool! It had been so many years since I saw the film, I thought I had dreamt the movie. Imagine my suprise with this two-pack release! It is a pristine wide screen presentation. The film is as fun as I remembered it. Not to be taken too seriously, it is a rubber monster movie with cool ideas and plenty of monsters clashing, all within the trademark cheapo effects of the time. Utterly charming.
The Toho version of Kong (his rubber suit, that is) is truly awful, but this only adds to the fun of the film. As this is a Japanese movie overdubbed in English, we also have the voice talents of Paul Frees ("Winter Warlock" from the Rankin / Bass production of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer") providing the voice of the villian. What more could you ask for? How about the bonus of getting Godzilla vs. King Kong? You got it! What a bargain!
Awesome twin pack!.......2007-03-21
Truly a killer twin pack King Kong movies. Get it for the "King Kong vs Godzilla" alone, a very awesome movie that hardly gets air play and great for any movie monster collection...highly recommended!!
The Two Mightiest Monsters Of All Time!.......2007-03-16
KING KONG VS. GODZILLA (1962)
PLOT: Mr. Tako, head of Pacific Pharmaceuticals, is frustrated with the television shows his company is sponsoring and wants something to boost his ratings. Tako is informed by a special type of berry that only grows on a small Pacific island called Faro Island. The natives there process the berries into a juice that they use as a medicine. They also use the juice as an offering to their giant god named "Kong". Tako sees potential in the berries and decides to set up an expedition to Faro Island. When Tako's men arrive at Faro Island, the natives there claim that "Kong" is real being. Meanwhile, an American submarine named Seahawk gets caught in an iceberg. Something goes wrong and the submarine blows up. An American helicopter hovering above watch as the iceberg breaks open and Godzilla crawls out. Godzilla heads toward a nearby army base. The base is no match for the mighty power of Godzilla. Back at Faro, a giant octopus attacks the village and the natives quickly throw spears at it. Unfortunately, the spears are no match for the giant creature. Suddenly, Kong shows up and beats up the giant octopus, sending it crawling back into the sea. Kong drinks some of the giant containers of berry juice and falls asleep. Tako's men then inform him of Kong. Tako makes plans to take Kong back to Tokyo, as a publicity stunt for Pacific Pharmaceuticals. Mr. Tako arrives on the ship transporting Kong, but unfortunately, the monster then wakes up and breaks free from the raft. Kong finally reaches Tokyo and meets up with Godzilla in a valley. This is a match between the mightiest monsters of all time. Who will win?
COMMENTS: This film marked the first time that two famous monsters from separate film franchises were teamed up since Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man (1943). This film acted as both a sequel to Son Of Kong (1933) as well as Godzilla Raids Again (1955). The film marked the first time either monster was seen in color and also the first time Kong was created using suitmation rather than a stop-motion model. For Godzilla, King Of The Monsters (1954), Toho Studios had originally planned on making Godzilla as a stop-motion model, but the process proved to be too extensive for the tight budget. For that film, and every other one to follow, it became traditional to create Toho's monsters through suitmation. The film was directed by Ishiro Hondo, who directed most of the classic Godzilla films. He purposely made the film campy and comical in order to entertain (and not frighten) children. The film itself is not exactly an Oscar-worthy film, but it featured two very popular monsters in a death match and several people went to see it. In Japan, it became the highest grossing Godzilla film to date. Many King Kong fans hate the comical appearance of Kong in the film. For the American film poster, they used a cropped photo of Kong from the original film rather than the way he looked in this film. Kong was made to look comical so the audiences would root for him over Godzilla. Many fans have noticed that King Kong is much larger in this film than he was in the original King Kong film. The film states that the reason for this was because the narcotic berries that Kong ate also contained growth hormones, which would explain him growing to the equal enormous size of Godzilla. At one point during the fight sequence, Kong shoves a tree down Godzilla's throat. This was a tribute to the original King Kong film, in which Kong shoved a tree down a Tyrannosaurus Rex's throat. Several rumours exist between the Japanese and American versions of the film. It is claimed that the film is called King Kong vs. Godzilla in the U.S. and Godzilla vs. King Kong in Japan. This is untrue; the film has the same title in both countries. Also, it is also claimed that Kong won the fight in the American version and that Godzilla won the fight in the Japanese version. This is also untrue; King Kong won in both films. Some fans also argue that King Kong swims away at the end because he is frightened of Godzilla, who didn't resurface from the ocean because he lives underwater anyay. Just the same, Toho Studios announced that King Kong was always meant to be the victor. At the time, King Kong was more popular in Japan, even though Godzilla was a Japanese creation. The film sparked sequels from the point of view of both monsters. Godzilla made his return in Mothra vs. Godzilla (a.k.a. Godzilla vs. The Thing) (1964); King Kong made his return in King Kong Escapes (1967). This DVD presents the film in the original widescreen theatrical ratio. There are no special features.
KING KONG ESCAPES (1967)
PLOT: The film begins with a UN submarine searching for oil. The ship is under the command of Commander Carl Nelson (Rhodes Reason). Susan Watson (Linda Miller) finds Nelson in his quarters with Lt. Hiro Nomura (Akira Takarada). The two are studying photographs of gorillas and they inform her of the legend of King Kong, who supposedly inhabits the nearby Mondo Island. Meanwhile at the North Pole, strange things are going on at a secret base. The base is run by the evil genius Dr. Who (Eisei Amamoto). Dr. Who is being employed by the mysterious Madame X (Mia Hama). Madame X has hired Dr. Who to dig up a mineral called Element X, which makes uranium look like gravel. In order to do the job, Dr. Who and his men have built a giant robot version of King Kong, called Mechani-Kong, to dig up the Element X. Unfortunately, the radiation from the deposit short out the robot's circuits. Mechani-Kong must be redesigned so that this doesn't happen again. Back in the sub, an underwater rockslide damages the rudder. The sub docks at Mondo Island for repairs. Nelson takes the opportunity to explore the island with Nomura and Susan. A native on the island tells them to leave, for they are trespassing on the territory of King Kong. Nelson and Nomura go after the native to ask him more questions, leaving Susan behind at their hovercraft. Suddenly, a large dinosaur called Gorosaurus comes out of the jungle. Susan screams in terror and the mighty King Kong comes to her rescue. Kong fights with the Gorosaurus and eventually kills it by breaking its jaw. Nelson and the others make it back to the submarine. Kong, who has has become smitten with Susan, follows. A large sea serpant attacks the sub, but Kong quicky attacks and kills it. Later on, the three UN explorers hold a press conference to discuss the events involving King Kong. Madame X attends the conference disguised as a reporter. She then sends her information back to Dr. Who, who decides to capture the real King Kong for digging up Element X. Is Dr. Who brilliant enough to capture the mighty King Kong?
COMMENTS: This film was produced by both Toho Studios and Rankin/Bass Productions. Rankin & Bass were famous at the time for producing Christmas TV specials such as Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964), Frosty The Snowman (1969), and Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town (1970). The film acted as a sequel to King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) while at the same time being a spin-off of the Rankin/Bass animated series The King Kong Show. Ishiro Honda once again returned as director. The character of Mechani-Kong was first used in the animated King Kong show. It later served as the inspiration for Mecha-Godzilla in Godzilla vs. Mecha-Godzilla (1974). The Gorosaurus dinosaur also returned in other Toho Godzilla films, including Destroy All Monsters (1969). The scene in where Kong kills the Gorosaurus by breaking its jaw is actually a tribute to the original King Kong (1933), in which Kong kills a Tyrannosaurus Rex the same way. The fight scene between Kong and the sea serpent is also a tribute to a similar scene in the original King Kong. There is also much confusion about the character of Dr. Who, who bears the same name as a TV series and titular character on British television. Despite the fact that both characters have the same name, they are not related. This film isn't exactly the best King Kong film, but it is entertaining for children and it serves as a nice follow-up to King Kong vs. Godzilla. Plus, Mechani-Kong is a really cool character. This DVD presents the film in the original widescreen theatrical ratio. There are no special features.

What else would you expect, it the movie we all grew up with. How can you not love it plus you get the equally campy and horribly good King Kong Escape! Love good bad movies, especially with giant monsters wreaking havoc!

GROOVY but $19.99.......2007-06-13
I haven't been able to watch exuberant Bollywood movies because the visuals have just been too overwhelming for me. I purchased this movie despite the high price because I was curious about what a Kolkatta movie is like. I am so happy I got to watch this movie. I recommend it. I hated spending $19.99 but this movie was easy to watch and Kollywood IS different from Bollywood. I'm glad I got a chance to see the contrast in style. This is definitely a talented production apart from being adapted from a strong story by Jane Austen unlike Bride and Prejudice which I find unwatchable.
Superb!.......2007-06-07
Indeed, Bollywood is not for everyone; the sudden silly dances, the childish scenes, drama, action, romance all together, but this Tamil movie is just outstanding! I have my own Bollywood collection, and this is definetely one of the best. I watched it after a huge disappointment with Mistress of Spices, which I thought would be interesting. This is how I like to see Aishwarya, good acting, great story and yes lovely lovely music. A MUST for any Indian-wanna-be like yours truly.
Worth Watching Again and Again........2007-04-26
Kandukondain Kandukondain is not a "Bollywood" film - Its not in Hindi - its "kollywood" south india - Tamil film.
It's a highly entertaining film loosely based on Sense and Sensibility. many Indian films have a reputation for having thin plots -not here there's a solid, believable plot here and dramatic storyline. i found the film charming and one of those you can watch again and again - if you don't speak Tamil you're going to have to because, the DVD - at least my version - had some of the worst subtitling i have ever seen - it's a real shame because I get the feeling the film has a great script (you can still follow the story very easily though)
I know everyone thinks Ash is beautiful (she is) but Tabu stole the show for me. Great music by AR Raham.
Good movie.......2007-03-09
Good movie. Had to look at it in bits and pieces due to my schedule, but overall good.
Great!.......2007-03-09
I love this movie. Even with subtitles it move me. I love the bollywood movies and this was a very good one.

junnkkk.......2007-06-28
Why would someone buy this pan & scan trash? do yourself a favor and recycle it!! The igonorance of some of these companies is overwhelming. This isn't the '80's any more, is it? Boycott rip-offs like this!
Rockem sockem goliaths.......2007-01-17
King Kong and Godzilla meet for the first time in this film about man once again messing around and exploiting the earth's stuff. One side tries to exploit King Kong and the other side's use of atomic power awakens Godzilla. The two meet and they fight destroying all in their wake. What has science done?
GET THE JAPANESE SUBTITLED VERSION INSTEAD!!.......2006-08-26
While the American version of this movie is somewhat entertaining, I realized how much it was butchered and altered when I acquired the Japanese subtitled version, which is wide screen, and hi-fi stereo. Ishiro Honda's original Japanese music score, especially the important "Godzilla" theme music was replaced in the American version with stock music from Universal, mostly from "The Creature From The Black Lagoon". There's no annoying U.N reports, which leads to another inaccuracy. When the helicopter pilot sees Godzilla breaking out of the iceberg, he shouts, "GODZILLA"! The scene then switches to U.N. reporter Eric Carter stating.."The world is stunned to discover that prehistoric creatures exist in the 20th century"...If that's the case, how did the helicopter pilot even know who Godzilla was? How did anyone know who Godzilla was? In the Japanese version, which, by the way, in the iceberg scene, the pilot gasps..Ahhhh...it's GOJIRA!" The "Godzilla" theme music stars, and the scene switches quickly to the scene where Godzilla is crossing the Bearing Sea, and attacks the military base. Godzilla's previous entrapment in the iceberg is also referenced to by one of the scientists, something to the effect of "We knew he would not remain frozen in the iceberg forever, even if it took 200 years, we knew he would return to us eventually". OK, it's not an epic flick like the original "King Kong", but it's a fun movie, and the Japanese version moves along a lot better than the American version, and makes more sense, if a movie like this can make any kind of sense! It runs about 10 minutes longer, and there's a little more detail to certain cast members concerning the "plot". It just makes more sense than the American version, as much sense as a low budget cult classic can make, I guess. Oh..yeah, and the ending is the SAME as the American version, except that you hear Godzilla's roar right before Kong's roar.
Campy, silly, cheap, badly dubbed...AND I LOVE IT!.......2006-06-28
Where do I begin?
The special effects are very cheaply done, even for 1962, when we already had the stop and go motion technology that made the original KING KONG so famous. The ape suit for KONG is so bad, it makes the one in the 1976 version look like CGI. Just watch the scenes where Kong bats his eye lids like some raging queen. The dubbing is expectedly bad and the performances from the Japanese actors are very campy.
So, it's amazing that given all that, this monster movie has become an irresistable cult classic! You can't help but feel a shiver of excitement in your spine when you see these two classic movie monsters (cheap suits) clash on screen.
For me personnally, this movie brings back memories of "Godzilla Day" on Channel 9, WOR TV, when I was a kid; every Friday after Thanksgiving.
Now; just imagine a spectacular remake of this movie with Peter Jackson's KING KONG and Roland Emmerich's GODZILLA! Ooooh, I shiver at the thought!
8th Wonder of the World vs. King of the Monsters.......2006-06-18
I love it! This is my favorite Godzilla movie. That doesn't make it good of course. I just have good memories of this movie. (sitting of the floor of my room, watching this movie with my friend, eating Dominos Pizza, betting on who would win.)
For King Kong Fans- This MIGHT not be the movie for you. The reason why is becuase this is NOT the King Kong from the 1933 classic. This is the Toho version. King King's size, apppearance, and powers have been drasticly altured for this movie. Although King Kong's look is kinda funky for this movie, you get used to it. Still King Kong fans should get over it and see the awesome match up between Kong and Godzilla.
Godzilla fans- See Godzilla in his first color appearance; as well as one of the last of the original look before he gets slimmed down and tail gets shorter. This is a classic movie for Godzilla. Many people say it is very silly (witch it is), but all-in-all it is a good movie. A must have for Godzilla fans.

More visually splendid and imaginatively written than the other Godzilla sequels, this (the fourth in the series) starts when Mothra's gigantic egg washes ashore in Japan, having been dislodged from Mothra Island by a hurricane. Two tiny twin girls (sometimes singing like dual-diminutive Dorothy Lamours) from the island come to plead for the return of the egg by the greedy business guys who bought it for a tourist attraction, but to no avail. Radiation from nuclear testing revives Godzilla from the earth, who proceeds to threaten the egg and the cities, unless Mothra and his larvae hatched from the egg can stop him. The battle sequences between Mothra and Godzilla, and between Godzilla and the larvae, are spectacularly vivid and colorful. --Jim Gay

Classic.......2007-06-21
What can be better than a giant lizard fighting a giant moth? Not much if you ask me, and this film has that and much, much more, including mystery, intrigue, and tiny little people in polynesian garb. This is a must see for any aspiring Godzilla fan.
go mothra!!!.......2006-06-15
as many thers have already reviewed this classic, i will make it short and sweet.
lets just say that the twin girls, all 11" of them, have mysteriously enchanting voices. mothra cares about us more than "the man" does, and the photographer dresses as smartly as her character is. please, for the love of larvae, watch this. who cares if it is letterboxed, or full screen... it is a gem.
you will laugh, cry , and perhaps pee a little. seriously, this is one of the best worst movies EVER!
DEATH TO FULLSCREEN!!!.......2006-03-15
DO NOT BUY THIS DVD!! "Godzilla VS Mothra" Is a great movie, it is a shame that it is presented here, with this DVD, in a full screen format. I just watched the uncut, Japanese LETTER BOX version DVD a friend loaned me, and was greatly disappointed at just how much the American full screen formatted version destroys the film. Do yourself a favor and don't wast your time or money on this FULL SCREEN PIECE OF CRAP, for it is unworthy of a space in your DVD collection. Wait for the letter box version.
good movie but............2005-11-26
this was a very good with some neat scenes and cool milatary stuff but i think this movie needs more destruction in here like when godzilla attacks nogoya he could destroy more then that but other then that it's a good movie.
The Best Rubber Suit.......2005-09-02
In my opinion, the best of all Godzilla movies ! The first
while definitely a classic, but a little anti climactic with the poor underwater scenes
.
Synopsis: A enormous Airbus-size egg is washed onto the shores of a Japanese harbour. A greedy, enterprising businessman, who is developing a huge adjacent property, sees the profit in such a venture to display this oddity of nature, washed up on the beach from Mothra's/It's Island where atomic experimentation had taked place.
.
A very pretty photographer and her reporter freind from a local newspaper put their noses a little too deep into the story and eventually wake Godzilla who happens to be hibernating on the land about to be developed.
In the meantime, two miniature women from It's Island plead for the return of Mothra's egg, warning catastrophe is inevitable if the greedy people do not concede. Godzilla, being extremely pissed off for having been woken, proceeds to wreak destruction across the city.
At this point, it is worth mentioning that, while the expensive high speed photography is gone
, the various effects in this chapter of the big, bad rubber guy are likely the best of the series. The animated lightning in one of the attempts to destroy Godzilla are very well done and the "matte" lines
are all but invisible .
Having been refused the return of Mothra's egg
the scientists who realize the extent of the danger ask the inhabitants of Mothra's Island to help them destroy Godzilla.
This is the part of the film that has a suprising twist. I won't tell the ending but this particular chapter of the film is suprisingly touching and the dialogue is intelligent. The discussion between the girls, natives and scientists is very insightful and lends much to the film's narration. .
The "small women" are strangely haunting. While the movie is great fun for a rainy Saturday with young family members, on a late night in the dark, on first viewing, this movie is certainly the most prophetic and insightful of the Godzilla series.
Mothra attempts to defeat Godzilla to protect its offspring and fails in the end. Warming the egg after it's death, the egg hatches with twin larvae that avenge it's parent's death .
While future Toho movies centered around more action, destruction and explosions, which is all great fun, this is likely the only one of the series that, taken in context, is memorable and leaves afterthoughts.
If you choose one Godzilla movie to own, this is definately the one to get. Stands up to repeated viewing and while there are no wrestling matches as in later 70s entries, and miniatures are obviously miniatures, the film holds up to it's name with a great story, haunting music, great effects and an open ended conclusion to allow fun but inferior movies to come.
Highly recommended!!!

But when the son and father meet, Zatoichi finds out that the father has been forced to work for gangsters. Using his lightning sword, Zatoichi takes on the crime boss in a relentless blend of action, violence, and comedy that makes Zatoichi Challenged one of the best in the long-running series.
Customer Reviews:
#17: THE FORBIDDEN ART.......2006-09-02
Entry #17 of the Zatoichi series is very unique. First of all, this is an extremely good Zatoichi episode, with a much different ending than many of the others. In the film, Zatoichi enters an inn to stay the night, but must share it with a sick woman and her young son. During the night the sick woman dies. However, before she dies she begs Zatoichi to take the boy to his father Shokichi [Takao Ito]. Along the way Zatoichi becomes very attached to the young boy: but as his way of life is not safe for this young boy he knows that he must part ways with him. Therefore, it is importatnt that he find the father. The young boys only link in the world now that the mother is dead.
Along the way, Zatoichi comes across a mysterious and unknown samurai [Jushiro Konoe]. This samurai shadows Zatoichi along the way. Who is he? What does he want? Well, apparently the boys father is in the pornography business. Tame by any means, but forbidden by law under penalty of death. However, Shokichi--a talented artist, is not doing this of his own bidding, he is being forced to do this artwork on pottery by an evil warlord. And as for the mystery samurai? Well, he is a government official. And more importantly he has the official sanction of the state to enforce the law, which means carrying out the death sentence.
Therefore Zatoichi must comply with the laws of the land. He must turn over Shokichi. Or will he? Moreover, this mystery samurai is no slouch with the sword. He is an expert swordsman as good--if not better than Zatoichi. Plus the samurai is honorable and carries himself with dignity. The mystery samurai has his orders and must carry them out--under no exception. But Zatoichi, being who he is by nature, defender of the weak and oppressed, will he allow the samurai to do this? Knowing that Shokichi is being forced against his will to make this art, will Ichi allow this execution to proceed? The conclusion of the episode is most unusual and I do not wish to spoil it by telling you, however, this episode is definetly different than his other "wipe up the town" endings. There is an unusual ending with this samurai. A VERY DIFFERENT kind of ending. Highly recommened.
An orphan boy and forbidden pottery.......2005-08-27
Poor old Zatoichi picked the wrong room for the night. Staying at an inn, he is forced to share a room with a sick woman and her son. Within minutes, the woman dies in Zatoichi's arms, and begs him to take the boy to his father, and artist named Shokichi. And the journey begins.
"Zatoichi Challenged" ("Zatoichi chikemuri kaido" or "Zatoichi's Spurting Blood Road") is a complex story, with many mini-stories within the quest for Shokichi. Along the way, the two meet a Kabuki troupe who find themselves in the middle of a contest between two rival bosses. A strange and powerful Samurai seems to cross Ichi's path at many random points. Leaving the Kabuki troupe, Ichi and the boy find Shokichi, but then discover a spiderweb of corruption and intrigue, as Shokichi is forced to design illegal pornographic pottery that is sold at a high price to collection lords. The identity of the mystery Samurai is revealed. A showdown is inevitable.
The dual-natured story of "Zatoichi Challenged" is unusual, but interesting. The connecting thread is the growing affection between Zatoichi and the boy, an affection that must eventually be severed. As Zatoichi knows, he is no fit father figure, and the boy's real family must be found and protected.
There is a great final duel between Zatoichi and the mystery Samurai, even more impressive that the usual movie-ending slaughter as Ichi destroys 30-40 mooks at a go. The mystery Samurai is powerful, honorable, and perhaps more skilled than the blind masseur himself. It is really up in the air as to who will win, and the the consequences will be.
Zatoichi Challenged.......2002-06-07
Let me start out by saying that If I knew about this, Shintaro Katsu would have gotten props from me a long time ago for his superb swordsmanship. Zatoichi Challenged was one of my absolute favorite episodes. Lush scenery, easy to follow plotline, and some of the most unparalleled REALTIME swordplay that this aspiring swordsman has EVER seen. To put it bluntly, this whole series is simply eye-popping. A fair warning to those who don't like to miss much with their movies: When watching ANYTHING from this series.........DON'T BLINK.
This is a Great Movie.......2001-10-26
I have seen 4 of the Zatoichi movies and have never been dissapointed in any of them. This Movie is no exception. It has a great story and great acting and some of the best martial art weapons action you will ever see. The final fight in this film is beautifully filmed and is among one of the best I have ever seen. I'm glad I have this film in my collection and I hope to have all the Zatoichi films. Not only is the action great but the filmwork, writing and acting are all excellent in these films.

Floyd Crosby won an Academy Award
® for his cinematography.
Customer Reviews:
Murnau's Tabu.......2007-06-21
Conceived as a joint project by docu-ethnographer Flaherty ("Nanook of the North") and German expressionist director Murnau ("The Last Laugh"), this poignant, beautifully photographed Oscar winner has few rivals in the silent era. Shot on location in the Pacific and helmed mostly by Murnau, its story of forbidden love resonated with audiences in the early '30s--just as a wave of the first talkies came ashore--and remains absorbing today. All the actors are Polynesian locals, which enhances the romanticized vision of blissful island life. But the flight from authority and visitation of fate in the form of an old holy man are as classic--and tragic--as Greek myth.
A tabu is upon us!.......2007-04-16
If there' s something clear along the history is the absolute happiness of two beings profoundly in love is only an utopia. And its only fulfillment seems to be reserved to fairy tales.
Murnau `s greatness talent consisted in to create supreme milestone films, since the optic of the German Expressionism as a true kaleidoscopic magician. Since his monumental Nosferatu, Sunrise, the last man or Tartuffe. In every one of these works the enormous trace of his genius is present.
In this time, the initial collaboration with Robert Flaherty and late conceptual differences were not obstacle to make this outstanding masterpiece, where the taboo is present as a dark cloud that hovers and permeates all the environment. In the Southern overseas, two young lovers have fallen in love, before a statement has been dictated. She has been designed as the chosen one among all the women. And those imposition must be obeyed. Because if not anyone who intends to get across this imposition will find the death. She has become untouchable by the divine majesties. Of course there are surreptitious signals that are closely linked with political issues. The film dates from 1931 and so you don't have to analyze so much to realize what's going on the script. Taboo means verboten; and represents the imposition of the rules upon the human desire, individual achievements and ambitions.
The paradise lasts until they decide to escape from this distorted state of things, in pursuit of their happiness But the second chapter; The lost paradise is a brutal denounce about the other side of the coin, the voracity, greed and sense of the opportunity when this young boy, an enviable diver can get all the pearls he wants without knowing the value of the money, that eventually will become his final perdition at the tragic and decisive moment, that will ignite with all its powerful design the force of the law.
After you watch this monumental work, there will be a weird sensation of bitterness and awfulness. The taboo is like a big eye, foreseeing 1984. The power of ancestral rituals, blended with our modern customs is simply unbearable for them and the moon will spread its traces on the farewell sea.
the last great silent movie.......2006-11-07
apart from charlie chaplin, this was the last major movie of the silent era. set in a purportedly idyllic south seas, it began as a rare collaboration between directors f. w. murnau ("nosferatu") and robert flaherty ("nanook of the north") -- tho the end product was way more murnau than flaherty. a saga of forbidden love, mixed with skin, it is both fascinating curiosity and enduring classic. i would recommend this movie to anyone seriously interested in motion picture history -- but it IS a special bit of cuisine, not for people who think "crash" is a masterpiece.
Murnau's legacy.......2005-09-06
It's somehow fitting that Murnau's last film was as great a masterpiece as Nosferatu and Sunrise. As has been said countless times, the photography is absolutrelky stunning, and the story, even though highly simplistic and told with zero dialogue, holds your attention all the way through. The extras and outtakes are interesting as well. This is one of those films you can read about, but really have to experience. Don't wait.
One of the 10 Best Silent Films.......2004-01-25
I will go against the grain of conventional opinion and admit that this is my favorite Murnau film. I think it was the influence of Robert Flaherty (in regard to location, subject matter, & casting) that put it over the top. But make no mistakes, this is Murnau's film. Amidst this cast and backdrop, Murnau brought his technique (the artful expression of narrative thru film images) to its most perfect form. There are barely any intertitles in this film; the pictures speaks almost completely without them. And here in Tahiti Murnau's fascination with the supernatural found poignancy in the exploration of the Tabu of the native islanders. Add to that romance and dancing scenes that are tantalizingly pure and delightful, and in my humble opinion you have Murnau's finest work.

Customer Reviews:
Good transfers of great films.......2004-07-14
The five titles in this collection are available separately, and you can find in-depth reviews for each. So I'll keep my review of the entire collection more general. Murnau, of course, was one of the giants of silent cinema, and four of these films are masterpieces. (Tartuffe is a bit weaker than the rest, IMO.) It's surprising how well these films hold up today as works of art AND as entertainments. Only the comedies of Keaton, Chaplin, and Lloyd are more compelling. Now for the discs:
Nosferatu: The best-looking North American transfer of Murnau's most famous film right now, with a longer running time and more accurate aspect ratio than most. The extras are skimpy; for example, the scene comparison is a good idea, but poorly executed since there isn't a clip from any other Dracula movie to compare it with! Best of all is the English-language trailer for Herzog's remake -- hidden as an Easter Egg. My only real complaint is that both music scores are terrible.
The Last Laugh: The earliest and poorest transfer of the bunch. My guess is that this was done before Kino's excellent restoration of Metropolis, when they started thinking more carefully about the DVD market. It's still acceptable, but the extras are even worse than Nosferatu's. At the very least, they could have provided a liner note essay!
Tartuffe: A fine transfer of the weakest film of Murnau's mature period. It will interest fans of his work, and the liner note essay offers a convincing analysis of the film-within-a-film framework. But the real gem is the 35-minute documentary on Murnau provided as an extra. Well worth checking out.
Faust: My own personal favorite, and the transfer is brilliant! There is a degree of decomposition and debris, but sections of the print appear almost pristine! Few extras (only a picture gallery), but who cares when the transfer of a silent film is this stunning?
Tabu: This is a Milestone/Image disc, not Kino. Surprisingly, it offers the most extras, including out-takes and a nice commentary track. The transfer is pretty clean, but unfortunately there is extensive cropping at the top of the frame throughout (something that Kino is much better at avoiding). The *original* music score definitely sounds its age, but isn't overly distracting.
Final words: Although I have reservations about the transfer of Last Laugh and Kino's lack of extras on its older discs, I highly recommend this collection. Value dictated my decision, and I bought the whole collection, which reduced the average cost per disc to a reasonable $21.50. The extras also come off better when taken as a whole.
