When it comes to an expressive set of lungs for horror, it's hard to match Jamie Lee Curtis, who set the standard for nonstop screaming in Halloween. She built her reputation as a scream queen in such subsequent outings as The Fog, Terror Train, and this similarly themed and relatively subpar horror outing. A progenitor of I Know What You Did Last Summer, this film focuses on four high school friends on prom night who are being stalked by a masked maniac seeking revenge for a death that occurred six years earlier. Product Description

Directed by Paul Lynch, this cult horror masterpiece starring Leslie Nielsen and scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis paved the way for future slasher films and inspired such blockbusters as Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. For six long years, Hamilton High School seniors Kelly (Marybeth Rubins), Jude (Joy Thompson), Wendy (Eddie Benton), and Nick (Casey Stevens) have been hiding the truth of what happened to ten-year-old Robin Hammond the day her broken body was discovered near an old abandoned convent. The foursome kept secret how they taunted Robin - backed her into a corner until, frightened, she stood on a window ledge...and fell to her death. Though an accident, the then-twelve-year-olds feared they'd be held responsible and vowed never to tell. But someone else was there that day...watching. And now, that someone is ready to exact murderous revenge - on prom night.

1 out of 5 stars Disco hell.......2007-05-14

I read a startling bit of news the other day on one of the horror websites I frequent on a regular basis. According to this article, someone in Hollywood is rolling full steam ahead on a "Prom Night" remake. Oh no! What is going on out there in Tinseltown? Is there no one left with an ounce of creativity? "Prom Night"! Next thing you know, someone's going to start talking about remaking "Black Christmas". Oh wait--that already happened with absolutely devastating consequences. After finally sitting down with the original "Prom Night," I can't imagine why anyone would want to bring this one back to the silver screen. It's not good in any way, shape, or form, and it's extremely unlikely a "reimagining" (That's a new word Hollywood unloads on the anxious suckers worried about a remake that might soil an original classic--sounds better, friendlier, don't you think?) will improve upon the pedestrian qualities of the original. I've seen billions of slasher flicks, many from the heyday of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and "Prom Night" ranks as one of the worst. It's even worse than "Terror Train". Sadly, both films star scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis. No wonder she left the genre.

"Prom Night" starts off with a childhood tragedy that should never have happened. A bunch of kids playing some sort of game in an abandoned house end up killing one of their playmates. How does it happen? The kid does a header out a window and slams into the ground. Why did it happen? The four youngsters taunted the other kid so badly that in the process of trying to escape, she backed up to that window ledge. Ooops. The surviving little ones immediately make some sort of pact, a promise if you will, that no one will tell the adults exactly what took place. After all, they're afraid something bad will happen to them if they tell the truth. What they don't know, what they won't know until their teenage years some years later, is that someone saw what happened that horrible day. And that someone is silently hiding away, biding their time and plotting a nasty vengeance that will rain death and destruction down on this little town. The resulting horror will take place, of course, on PROM NIGHT! Bum, bum, bum! Oh the humanity! Oh the horror! Oh brother! I wish I'd taken the header out the window after viewing this trash!

Six years later, all the kiddie murderers are grown up and planning their prom night. We have Kelly (Marybeth Robbins), Jude (Joy Thompson), Wendy (Eddie Benton), and Nick (Casey Stevens) all going through the motions planning for the big night. Also looking forward to the big event is Kim Hammond (Curtis) and her brother Alex (Michael Tough). It was their sister who took the Nestea plunge all those years ago. It's kind of a bummer for them since their father Raymond (Leslie Nielsen) is the school principal, but you gotta do what you gotta do. As the nighttime party nears, all four of the principals involved in the accident receive a frightening phone call from some wacko who likes to tap a pencil on a pad of paper. Hmmm. The story tries to fill time by introducing us to various tensions involving getting dates for the dance, keeping a date for the dance, hooking up with a ridiculous nerd driving a van, fighting in school, and trying to undermine the prom queen (Curtis, of course). You get the idea. By the time we get to prom night, I'm ready to turn in for the evening. Nothing exciting happens in this film aside from those creepy phone calls.

Actually, that's not quite accurate. A few things of interest do occur, and it's worth mentioning them here. One, "Prom Night" is relatively sauce free. Sure, we get a neat decapitation at one point in the proceedings, but most of the kills in the movie take place in that great unknown land called "Offscreen". That's a big strike against the movie right there. Two, the movie came out in 1980, which meant that filming probably took place a year or two earlier. You know what that means: DISCO! Yep, expect to see plenty of disco dancing in this film. It's painful in the extreme. I'd rather take an axe in the head than watch interminable scenes of Jamie Lee Curtis cutting the rug with her best Travolta dance moves. Feel the energy! Feel the excitement! Why I can't I feel my legs anymore? Yuck. I'm watching the disco fever unfold and preying the psycho sets off a car bomb outside. Anything to make the pain go away. Because that's what we're dealing with in "Prom Night": severe pain from watching such an inept clunker unfurl on the screen. I didn't even care about the identity of the killer in the end. All I wanted was to see the closing credits.

Two interesting notes about "Prom Night" and then we'll call it a night. First, I think the movie is in the public domain because all sorts of inferior prints of the film are circulating out there in movie land. The copy I watched on DVD looked awful and didn't have any extras. Second, the film must have done well at the box office since Hollywood unleashed no less than three sequels on an unsuspecting public. Have I seen any of them? Nope. Would I watch them? Probably. What can I say? I'm a sucker for horror flicks. That, and I'm sure they don't have disco scenes. Looking back over my review, I say go ahead and remake this movie. It can't be any worse. They should keep the disco scenes intact, though. That way if the horror doesn't work, at least the audience will find some entertainment through laughter. One star. Avoid the original "Prom Night" at all costs.

PROM NIGHT is a disco-classic slasher frenzy that will make you watch it over and over

5 out of 5 stars Disco,Jamie Lee Curtis and Rolling Heads..I'm There.......2007-02-10

"Prom Night" Is another of my favorite early Slashers.
I love the disco soundtrack and the whole late 70's feel of the movie. Ever since I saw Halloween I craved more Jamie lee Curtis and this gives you a healthy dose.
The plot is pretty usual but the killer wasn't predictable like a lot of slasher movies.
It's a horror/slasher classic,not much gore but still effective .
Can I say as a woman I would never take a ride from a fat boy in a VAN~!!
Jude~! what were you feelin girl?
And in the 70's and 80's slashers the jocks usually didn't have any muscles
But the girls always had big [...]. go figure. ANYWAY..buy the movie it's slasher royalty.

5 out of 5 stars PROM NIGHT 2 ends up being alot better than you might think!.......2006-10-31

Have you seen the first PROM NIGHT movie? Have you seen the second PROM NIGHT movie? Are you confused? Thats because HELLO MARY LOU - PROM NIGHT 2 pretty much has nothing to do with the first movie. Well, with the exception of the title that is. Whatever reason the film makers decided to go into a totally different direction (maybe they did it for the "hip" and new generation of teenage Horror movie watchers) is fine by me, the end result turns out pretty good. Basically, PROM NIGHT 2 is about this girl Mary Lou who is burned alive at her prom many years ago. Fastforward to the 1980's and suddenly the past is coming back to haunt the school Mary Lou died at. The movie has a few plot holes as to how Mary Lou comes back to haunt the school or where she gets all of these evil powers. Basically it's a small scene with her old prom crown being the center pice of her "powers." Whatever. Small details that don't really hold the movie back any. Anyways, one of the blonde girls at the Highschool finds herself the focus of some nasty visions and eventually Mary Lou takes over her body. She uses her new physical body to get revenge on some of the teachers that are to blame for her dying in the past and a couple of teenagers in the process. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is a part where Mary Lou is hunting a girl in a locker room. The girl goes to hide in a locker and Mary Lou uses her "powers" (think Nightmare on Elm Street special effects) to smash all the lockers together, crushing her in the process. It's a really nasty scene that gore hounds will eat up, no problem! Over all, HELLO MARY LOU - PROM NIGHT 2 is a well made Horror movie that goes beyond expectations. With good acting, high production, wonderful special effects and a enjoyable (if only a little bit flawed) plot, PROM NIGHT 2 is perfect for any Horror fans movie collection. Those who enjoy movies like Nightmare On Elm Street, Friday The 13th and Hellraiser will find much to enjoy here. Gore hounds and special effect junkies check it out!

4 out of 5 stars Horror Fan.......2006-04-21

I really enjoyed this film! it may be very corny but that doesn't matter, it has a fast pace, some great gore, a lesbian situation and a disturbing incest moment, but overall I still loved this film!

3 out of 5 stars great movie but definitely NOT widescreen.......2006-03-29

movie claims to be "enhanced for 16x9" but this is meaningless market drivel. It's often referred to as "widescreen" in the DVD descriptions on the web, too. Not true. Seems the Prom Night series has DVD management consistently punting on widescreen support (read: showing the movie as it was filmed and intended by the director). It would be great if all the late-nineties first-run panic-to-market DVDs were reissued in widescreen.

5 out of 5 stars Prom Night 2 is the Best !!!.......2005-11-30

All the prom nights are classics, I really love this one that revolves around Mary Lou Maloney, this is horror at it's best. Mary Lou is killed in a fire and her life is cut short so she comes back... and possesses an innocent girl to take revenge on the ones she feels is responsibile for her death.

4 out of 5 stars Great Sequell, better then the original!!!!.......2005-07-12

Prom Night 2 - Hello Mary Lou is about a girl named Mary Lou who was killed at her prom on stage accepting the prom queen award sometime during the 1950's. And then the movie takes place 30 years later and the spirit of Mary Lou has come back from the dead to get revenge, wreak havoc and accept her award as prom queen. She possesses a girl to do so and nothing is going to stop her from getting what she wants.

BORE:
When I was a kid I came home one day and my brother had this movie playing, and I saw a seen that scared me back then, but stuck in my mind all these years. And now finally I have tracked down what that movie was and being a horror buff I must say I this is a pretty decent flick that rekindled me with that scene in my head and i also wasn't disappointed with the rest of the film around it.

Tho it didn't scare me at all this time (nothing does anymore) I still think it's a great horror movie. What's interesting about it is it pays tribute to many of the great horror movies made before it. The most noticeable is the prom at the beginning of the movie that resembles the prom from the movie Carrie. It's not a rip-off; it's a tribute to many, many horror movies.

SUMMARY:
This movie has some great scenes... especially in the locker room *squish*. I love the homage stuff, I like the catch phrases and I think this is certainly a terrific horror movie. The ending could have been better, but overall I'm glad I own this one. It's a shame there is no bonus features at all. I'd love to have heard an audio commentary.

NOTE: this film is not entirely a sequel to Prom Night 1. This movie uses the title as part 2, but it's kind of the same thing that was done for Halloween 3... only this movie doesn't suck!!! So keep in mind it's not a continuation of the first movie, but IMO this is the best Prom Night of them all!

    If you are a horror buff that loves ALL horror movies, and not JUST the ones with the '05 special effects, you'll love this one,I did. The humor is a little dry, but I still loved it.

    Prom Night 3 is awesome has a hot sexy cast and the story is the same as Prom Night 2!!!!!! Mary Lou is back in action killing students and teachers again,but this time she is in love with Zach Gillian!!!!!!!! Prom Night 3 is a five star movie and as far as the other one i would have to give it a four star it wasn't as good as the other one!!!!!!! Check them out!!!!

    3 out of 5 stars It's Not Who You Come WIth, It's Who Takes You Home.......2005-07-12

    ~~~~~Prom Night 3 (*** 3 Stars)~~~~~
    Prom Night 3 takes the character from Part 2, Mary Lou and does an interesting thing with her character for this film. Mary Lou has gotten her revenge and shes still floting around the school. And with nothing to do and no one left to kill who needs killing she falls in love with one of the students and helps him go from a nobody to an honour student and his grades and ppopularity increase. However, anybody that keeps trying to get in the way, interfear with him, or find out whats really going on, there fate is dealt with by Mary Lou.
    However he is not too happy with her killings, she cant stop and he's doubhting it will work out.... will he work it out with Mary Lou? or will he tell her it's over and turn his life upside down? ...duh
    Overall I thought it was pretty interesting. I thought for a moment it's pretty original for a ghost to fall in love with a human, but then I thought a film called High Spirits and a few others, but this one is unique in it's own way. This is done more in a Horror way. However, keep in mind that this is a Horror/Comedy. So blood and gore fans who just wanna see brutality, or those who dont like comedy with there decapatations might not like this film.
    I guess maybe if you like Night Of The Living Dead or Sean Of The Dead kind of movies, you might enjoy this movie.
    Theres no bonus features at all. I think this movie is still better then the 1st, but it's not as good as part 2. But it's in 2nd place of all 4 movies for me!
    ~~~~~Prom Night 4 (* One Star)~~~~~~

    This time Prom Night hasnt got anything to do with Mary Lou. Which I think is the wrong direction. I find it pretty stale, humorless, goreless and pretty boring at times. Suprsingly it does come with a trailer which is more then any of the others can say. But this film just shouldnt have been added to the Prom Night saga. It's the typical horney teenagers, unsupervised, haunted house thing. Seen it, zzzzz. I can see why it was added with part 3.

    Tho I give it 1 star, I kind of lean more to just below 2 stars.. kind of a one and a half star rating. I've seen alot worse, but I would probably give those films -1 stars. But this film just needed blood and guts to be affective rather then a done-to-death already senario.

    4 out of 5 stars 2 fun movies for a late night weekend watch.......2003-11-17

    Prom night 3 (1989)Was in fact rather fun, comedic and shall I dare say, semi creepy? It wasn't like part 1, or even 2, but it was still decent, while the 1991 'finale' deliver us from evil takes us into a very similar direction as the cheap yet scary 'HALLOWEEN: THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS' Director's cut...but that one at least has pace. I actually thought they were both decent, especially part 3, the transfer on part 3 was pretty good, fullscreen, but it looked sharper then the VHS, yet part 4, not so much...it looked the same as a VHS except less speckling and no backround film sound (like old vhs's have)I liked the fact that it was realy cheap and it's 2 movies for 1 low price, part 3 was about mary lou like part 2, except this one takes a dark humor route, part 4 had some semi suspense in it but was pretty cheap. Overall quality isn't that spectacular, but admit it, neither were these sequels...

Guess who lives to tell the tale? --Marshall Fine

    Description

    Filmmaker Hali Lee thought her own prom was a real letdown, yet she continued to be fascinated by the endurance of this quintessentially American coming-of-age ritual. To discover why, she returns to her hometown of Kansas City to track the pomp, preparations and individual stories of would be promgoers as diverse as America itself. Among them: Smurf, an inner-city track star who is gunning for Prom King; Nick, who attends a No-Dancing-or-Spaghetti-Straps celebration of an ultra-conservative Christian school; Gayla, an openly lesbian teen who participates in an alternative event by a gay & lesbian youth group; and Oliver, an anti-prom slacker who takes his video camera as his date. With wry humor and an analytical eye, Lee and co-director Peter von Ziegesar breezily capture the fabricated fantasies, kitsch and pageantry that keep proms eternal.

      Description

      It's the way we've always done it. That's how the tradition of a black prom and a white prom were explained in a small Georgia town. But last year tradition was broken and there was an integrated dance. This year, though, there will be two dances again. Why? ABC News went down to Georgia and found not just split proms, but in the high school yearbook, in the pages where kids are labeled "Most this" or "Most that" there are always two couples, one white, one black. Everything is split, and duplicated. Correspondent: Jim Wooten

            1 out of 5 stars That Football was Spiked!.......2005-03-02

            Terrible sequel is by far the worst of the series till part 4 arrived. A Canadian teen named Alex is failing school and having trouble on the football team and then Mary Lou comes back to Hamilton High and then makes Alex popular and then he buries the dead bodies in the football field. This movie is a waste of time and only has one funny scene where Mary Lou throws a football at the bully and a spike stabs him.

            5 out of 5 stars In part 3, the goodlooking boys and girls come out to play!.......2002-03-30

            Eighties horror movies, what would we do without them? Horror movies since the eighties have lost the gore and no budget effects that made them enjoyable to watch. Prom Night 3 achieves everything you could possibly want in a horror movie, goodlooking guys and girls, and did I mention the goodlooking guys?!:) Dylan Neal stars in this movie, and if he's hot now, he was certainly smoldering then!

            The movie does have a certain budget look to it, but the story is straightforward and enjoyable, not to mention some of the best death scenes ever! I would really recommend this movie, and I would suggest inviting a few mates over, so you can have a laugh with the death scenes. Positively gory, but very well done. Enjoy!

            4 out of 5 stars Great movie, stupid ending!.......2000-08-14

            If it weren't for the ending, I would have rated it 5 stars, but as many times before, the ending destroys a movie. But to the film. This is horror/comedy, so don't expect to be scared. But it has gore, and the one scene where Alex is running naked in the hall, reminds me strongly about Mr.Bean(! ) This time another Prom Queen return from the dead, and fall in love with one of the present students. But how far are they willing to go for love? Buy it, and find out.

            2 out of 5 stars this has got to be the stupidest movie ever made!.......1999-11-07

            what?What? How could anyone give this movie five stars. It was the worst movie ever made. How could they take the prom night franchise and turn it into some lame horror movie. It's ridiculous. The plot was dumb and pointless and the one-liners absolutely not funny. The movie was a disgusting mix of sex and violence, that tried to hard to be funny and failed. this is definitely the most pointless movie and the worstsequel ever. DUMB! just plain dumb! The ending completely ruined even the few(1 or two) good parts in the movie.
