Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Bolero, directed by Bo Derek's husband John, comes billed as "a masterpiece of erotic adventure" (the original theatrical trailer included on this disc is almost worth the price of the DVD). Derek stars as "Mac," who, after "so many years of being so very, very proper," is determined to lose her maidenhood. After a comically disastrous episode with a sheik, she catches the eye of a matador, but their affair takes a frustrating turn after he suffers an inconvenient accident in the ring. As many observers note throughout the film, Derek just may have been "the most beautiful woman in all the world," and for some, that is enough. The fact that she is clearly more comfortable with her equine costars than she is with the rest of the human cast (including--good Lord--George Kennedy as her chauffeur and confidant) is just another of her endearing charms. But for Derek's less patient fans, Amazon.com presents this timed-out guide to the "good parts," or, to be less PC, the scenes in which the ravishing Ms. Derek appears in various stages of undress: 5:00; 20:57; 59:12; 1:28:36; and 1:38:48. But really, for connoisseurs of bad movies, it's all good, from the curious credits ("Love scenes scored by Elmer Bernstein") to the ludicrous dialogue ("I want ecstasy... right now"). Bolero may not be a 10, but as a cinematic debacle of Showgirls proportions, it is a must-own "20." --Donald Liebenson

20 years is a long time in the lifeline of movie plot-arc necessities. It's also a pretty big generational stretch in the lives of audience demographics, which may be part of the reason the producers of this remake of the 1986 cult horror classic felt the need to update the original spare mano-a-mano backbone into a girl-and-mano-a-mano. The Twilight Zone-ish setup is still a pretty neat idea: regular guy on a lonely highway picks up a hitchhiker who turns out to be a psychopathic killer with some very unsettling supernatural might. Fans of the original could hardly hope for a demon villain with such creepy charisma as Rutger Hauer. But Sean Bean makes a respectable replacement, with his understated stare and stewing rage that brings a new brand of hair-raising devilry to the role of hitcher John Ryder. The lone "good guy" originated by a boyish C. Thomas Howell has been upgraded to a lovesick couple. In a twisty touch, Jim (Zachary Knighton, sorta unknown) and Grace (Sophia Bush, of One Tree Hill fame) trade gender roles, with Jim turning wimpy and feminine and Grace becoming a shotgun-toting testoster-ette. The body count's a little higher and the gore factor increased by the power of 20 (years), but some of the original film's set pieces remain much the same-- body-snapping case in point being an 18-wheeler being put to use as a old-fashioned torture rack. While the original might have placed a bit more emphasis on the philosophical and existential elements of evil passing from soul to soul, it wasn't exactly an intellectual thrill ride. Likewise, 2007's The Hitcher is no art film, and it can't be faulted for choosing fright and might for audiences that are always looking for bigger and more elaborate splats for their horror entertainment buck. And if you stick out your thumb for this one, expect plenty of splat. --Ted Fry

4 out of 5 stars A Hundred Times Better Than The Original.......2007-06-28

I saw the original years ago.
I wasn't impressed with it then,
sure Rutger Hauer was creepy,
but you could see him being crazy a thousand miles away, so it didn't catch you off-guard.
Naturally,
when the remake released I was apprehensive about picking it up.
I mean why remake a movie that wasn't that good to begin with.
The answer; to make it a hundred times better.
The much needed injection of action
puts the proverbial petal to the metal.
This flicks got more thrills, action, and blood than the original;
It's superior to it in every way.
Once the movie starts,(and it wastes no time doing that),
it doesn't let up until the credits roll.
This is the flick the term "Thrill ride" was invented for.
Character development, plot, purpose, and the law of physics
are tossed to the wind, in exchange for good fun ride.
(Half the time I was like "No Way!" & "This guy is unstoppable")
He is an enigma alright, and he will hunt you down, regardless.

Thrill after non-stop thrill,
will not only put you on the edge of you seat,
but will make you fall flat on your face,
so enjoy the ride to the carpet.

MORAL OF THE STORY:
Keep your eyes on the road, and break for no one.

once upon a time not so long ago, Hollywood execs gave the thumbs up to remake the classic mo vie Psycho. Since then, every classic horror movie has been fair game for new producers, directors and writers to have their way with. And thats where the pointless remake of The Hitcher comes in. As has been mentioned by countless other reviewers, Sean Bean in the place of Rutger Hauer is a noted loss, however the real issue with the remake is the changed storyline which is more of a blending of the original Hitcher and its direct to DVD sequel than anything new. The problem is that by making it a duo of good against a single evil, the tension is all but gone. The effects are very good, the chase is ok, but all in all even if you stop comparing the film to the original, the remake comes up one dimensionally flat. If you want a proper modern take on the premise of The Hitcher, see Highwaymen with Jim Caviezel. The story is compelling, the characters interesting and the whole thing comes off far better than even the few best elements of the Hitcher remake.

1 out of 5 stars How bad is it?.......2007-06-23

Pretty bad. The original was a great film. This one was so stupid. An example is when the two kids instead of explaining who the real killer is they decide to steal a cop car and drive off. The Born Again Christian family who gets knifed to death is an interesting add in. Not sure what the Hollywood director was trying to do there. All in all save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Intense Thriller.......2007-06-23

This is one of the better thriller movies I have seen. The mix of suspense and violence is just right and will keep you watching until the end.

4 out of 5 stars Better than I thought it would be.......2007-06-19

THE HITCHER is actually a pretty good remake, and a pretty good thriller. I think we all know the premise: a young couple meets a hitchiker who ends up being a murderer. It's more than that though.. you get to care about the characeters, and you get to know them.
The two stand outs are clearly SEAN BEAN and SOPHIA BUSH. They both do a wonderful job. Sean Bean is just creepy as hell in this.. he will really scare the hell outta you. Sophia Bush shows that she can do more than One Tree Hill and teen drama's.. she is a good actress in this.
Have fun with the movie. Don't expect a masterpiece, but it certainly is good. Don't write it off because you don't like remakes.

3 out of 5 stars Hunky male co-stars a definite plus, but ... .......2007-06-21

This movie is mediocre. Not real good, not real bad. I watch it for the hunky Scotsman and the hunky Spaniard. The Scotsman has a very seductive voice, and isn't bad looking; the Spaniard looks like Hugh Jackman. The Arab sheik, forget. One of the characters was right when they said he could pass as 'your sister' - too pretty to be a real man.

The sets were nice, the locations were fabulous. Weak, almost non-existent plot. The best thing for me was seeing the nude male co-stars, and I do wish there had been more emphasis on that, and also the sideline romance between the Scotsman and the Spanish woman. Got a good laugh when the Arab sheik made a kidnapping attempt.

Just my female viewpoint.

1 out of 5 stars Car wreck for undersexed juveniles........2007-06-04

There's no doubt in my mind that the people who created this load of celluloid sewage knew that featuring Bo Derek getting her bones banged just shy of aggravated battery would have a draw, particularly for juveniles with unrestrained hormones. And that's the only reason anyone would watch this movie. The script is straight out of a fantasy contest, the acting abysmal, and the whole premise ludicrous. They do their best to create a fantasy atmosphere, indulging in the beauty of Spain for romantic backdrop and give us a Bo Derek pleading for sex. For most of this movie's audience, that's enough. For lovers (no pun intended) of quality film it isn't even close to a reason to spend a quarter watching this crud. Oh, I admit, I watched it several times whilst in my college years. But that's what college age guys do. And I would venture to guess that the demographic for this movie is 90% male, mostly from 18-30. Frankly, watching Bo get her brains banged out is worth the price of admission, especially for that group. But everything else about this movie isn't just bad, it's purely comical. I wondered to myself what was George Kennedy thinking when he accepted his role in this. If he'd have dug into his Dragline character from "Cool Hand Luke" the movie would have at least conceded to it's absurdity and not tried to be taken the least bit seriously. I find it hilarious that Amazon realized this to the point that they conceded by giving out the times in the movie where Bo gets banged. That alone should say something- that anything outside those time slots isn't worth watching. I know lots of 40 somethings that would have liked the same thing for "Lolita," though those encounters are less frequent. All in all, this movie ranks (pun INTENDED) in the hall of fame of incredibly bad movies. The 1 star is for the Bo sex scenes, otherwise, ZERO!

4 out of 5 stars BOlero!.......2007-01-15

John Derek will go down in history as one of the worst directors of all time. One could call him the antipode to Stephen Spielberg. However, Derek did have ONE thing going for him in his movies: showcasing his lovely wife naked!

It is odd that these days many people are too young to remember Bo Derek. Growing up in the 80s, she was the undisputed queen of eroticism, and this film shows why that was so. I just watched it again this morning & I had almost forgotten just how perfect her body is & how her long flowing hair looked while riding a horse.

If it were not for Bo, I doubt if anyone ever would have heard of John. In fact, he is already quickly becoming a footnote in the annals of Hollywood. To be sure, this is a "B" movie and it's not very well done. 90% of the scenes look like they were thrown in as an afterthought. The movie attempts to be comical at times, and fails miserably. For the most part, it is a yawner.

The one factor that just barely elevates it to 4 stars is Bo Derek shedding her clothes @ will. If you're a Bo Derek fan, this movie is a can't miss! When it comes to John Derek movies, this is as good as they get.

2 out of 5 stars "I had so many years of being so very proper. I had good-girl claustrophobia.".......2006-09-25

The alternate title for the film Bolero (1984) is Bolero: An Adventure in Ecstasy...after watching the film last night a better one might have been Bolero: An Adventure in Stupidity...written and directed by the late John Derek (Tarzan, the Ape Man), the film starred his most current wife at the time Bo Derek (10, Tarzan, the Ape Man). Also appearing is George `Anything for a Buck' Kennedy (The Dirty Dozen, Cool Hand Luke), Andrea Occhipinti (Conquest), Ana Obregón (Monster Island), and Olivia d'Abo (Conan the Destroyer, "The Wonder Years"), in one of her first roles.

Bo Derek plays Ayre `Mac' MacGillivery, a woman who (get this) is preparing to graduate from an English college and once she does, she'll trade in her diploma for a vast inheritance. Once that happens she plans to travel the world and learn the ways of love because, as you see, she's still a virgin. Okay, wait a minute...Bo's pushing thirty and she's just graduating from college? I can buy off on that, but I'm having a much harder time with the notion she's untouched, I mean seriously...anyway, after seeing one too many Valentino films (the film is supposed to be a period piece, set in the early 20th century I guess), Mac hits the road with her trusty chauffeur Cotton (Kennedy) and college friend Catalina aka `Cat' (Obregón), the trio heading towards the Middle East as Mac thinks it would be the ginchiest to get bagged by a real, honest to goodness sheik. After a failed attempt (the sheik got stoned on magic smoke and passed out, but not before covering a nekkid Derek in warm honey), Mac, with entourage in tow, makes her way to Spain with the intent on hooking up with a handsome matador, and she finds one named Angel (Occhipinti), who, when not faux fighting bulls or shagging fourteen year old gypsy girls produces wine, and lots of it. With the help of Angel's tagalong gypsy girl named Paloma, played by Ms. d'Abo sporting a ridiculous Spanish accent, Mac worms her way into Angel's bed after agreeing to use her vast fortunes to buy his wine, the deal sealed with a good shagging (I find Spanish business negotiations quite agreeable). Following this there's some more idiocy, capped off by Angel getting his doodle gored by a bull, and now unable to perform, much to Mac's dismay (no more zoom zoom in the boom boom). So anyway, while Cat's getting friendly with Mac's kilted Scottish lawyer and Cotton gets his groove on with Angel's sassy cook, Mac tries to draw Angel from his depressed funk in the hopes she'll be able to cure his condition by prancing around his room nekkid. When not sadistically teasing a man who can't perform, Mac begins taking up bullfighting for some odd reason or another.

Okay, I first saw this film back in the mid 1980s on cable I was in the hormonally charged state of a teenager coming into his own, so my main focus was obviously on Derek's nekkidness, of which there's quite a bit. After watching this film again some twenty years later, I find I still enjoy the nekkidness, but I have to say the rest is probably one of the more ridiculous efforts I've seen in a long time. I think the intent was to create a rich, erotic drama, but the film fails miserably mainly for the fact Bo Derek cannot act, at least not enough to carry a film. She's certainly attractive, but her ditz factor is incredibly high, not helped any by her husband's completely rotten and moronic scripting (the film comes off like a poorly written Harlequin romance novel). Speaking of her husband, how creepy is that, knowing he wrote and directed the film, especially given the sequences where his wife is getting it on with other guys (he filmed her in some equally steamy sequences in the 1981 moron-a-thon Tarzan, the Ape Man)? The man was pushing sixty at the time (while Bo wasn't quite yet thirty), so the maybe wedding tackle didn't function the way it used to which resulted in his willingness to let his wife dally about on screen with other men (a couple of the intimate sequences looked pretty realistic)...I don't know, but whatever...a good part of the story has Bo's character talking about her virginity like it was some sort of gift she was willing to impart, which, after awhile, got really old (at least she didn't refer to it as her `flower, but she did refer to it as `her fruit' at one point), which ends, mercifully, after she gets her shag on with Angel. As far as the rest of the cast they didn't fare much better. George Kennedy seemed kind of lost, hanging about to pick up a check and see some nekkid broads I suppose, and Olivia d'Abo appeared simple-minded as the young gypsy girl stuck on Angel (eventually she gives way to Mac as she realized she couldn't compete). One of the biggest mysteries for me, besides the actual point of the film, is why it ran an hour and forty-five minutes. Once you get by the juicy stuff (the attractive people being a nekkid), the rest just drags under the unbearable weight of its' own harebrained idiocy. Perhaps the funniest scene in the film comes near the end, as Mac and Angel are getting it on (seems Mac's desirability is such that it can cure a broken doodle) and they're transported to, get this, a smoke-filled plane of reality. Right in the middle of their routine a large, purple neon sign appears behind them spelling out the word EXTASY, as if to really bring it home (yeah, I know it's spelled wrong but that's how it was in the film, intentionally so). All in all if you're looking to see Ms. Derek in the raw, then this film is right up you alley as she's got about five or six scenes, but if you're looking for anything remotely resembling an actual movie (plot, interesting and engaging characters, etc.), best to keep on looking.

The picture on this DVD, presented in widescreen (1.85:1), enhanced for 16X9 TVs, does looks clean and clear, and the Dolby Digital Stereo Surround audio comes through well. As far as extras there isn't much except for a theatrical trailer and subtitles in English, French, and Spanish.

Cookieman108

By the way, did I mention how creepy (and skeevy) I found it for a man to write and direct a film featuring his really hot wife enjoying the pleasures of other men? Maybe he took some weird sense of pride in showing the world how, even at his age, he could still get with really attractive women...

3 out of 5 stars Bo Derek - the erotic dream princess.......2006-06-07

... As a film it isn`t up to much, but the lovely photography of Bo Derek leaves a lot to be desired -aaaaaaaa u were my teenage dream(with Christopher Atkins hehehe)... C it for camp reasons only:-)))

--Ted Fry

Description

4 out of 5 stars A Hundred Times Better Than The Original.......2007-06-28

I saw the original years ago.
I wasn't impressed with it then,
sure Rutger Hauer was creepy,
but you could see him being crazy a thousand miles away, so it didn't catch you off-guard.
Naturally,
when the remake released I was apprehensive about picking it up.
I mean why remake a movie that wasn't that good to begin with.
The answer; to make it a hundred times better.
The much needed injection of action
puts the proverbial petal to the metal.
This flicks got more thrills, action, and blood than the original;

2 out of 5 stars Not a hitcher to pick up.......2007-06-26

once upon a time not so long ago, Hollywood execs gave the thumbs up to remake the classic mo vie Psycho.

Claude Lelouch (A Man and a Woman) tackles a giant canvas in the sprawling Les Uns et Les Autres, a movie full of brilliant actors and heartfelt moments. To make a coherent whole out of these elements would take a more profound director than Lelouch, however. Following dozens of characters from the 1930s through World War II and into the late '70s, Lelouch struggles to develop a grand theme based on sketchily developed people, all tied together with pop music and Ravel's evocatively used "Bolero." Not surprisingly, the sections dealing with Occupied Paris are the most compelling, with a poignant turn by Nicole Garcia (James Caan and Geraldine Chaplin, each in dual roles, hold down the U.S.-based segments). The film was well-received in Europe, although a cut U.S. release under the title Bolero flopped. If you stick around for the ambitious final sequence, look for an unknown Sharon Stone sitting in bed with Caan. --Robert Horton

Description

From internationally acclaimed director Claude Lelouch (A Man and a Woman) comes a sweeping epic chronicling three generations whose lives revolve around the magic of music. In an unforgettable dual role, James Caan (The Godfather) heads an all-star international cast through decades of global turmoil, from pre-World War II Europe to a powerful finale in the 1960s. Geraldine Chaplin (Talk to Her), Fanny Ardant (8 Women), Robert Hossein (Rififi), Macha Meril (Deep Red), Richard Bohringer (Diva), Alexandra Stewart (Day for Night), and a very young Sharon Stone also appear in this beautiful tapestry of time, memory, and melody. Dynamic musical score by popular composers Michel Legrand (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) and Francis Lai (Love Story), studded with classic favorites by Ravel, Beethoven, Liszt, and more!

5 out of 5 stars second time around........2007-05-24

I was very glad to find this movie on Amazon. I had first seen it when it originally came out. Back then, I saw it in Italy in Italian. I was struck by the choice and sequence of events and how they were developed.
Now I have seen the original French version (this copy had subtitles in English) and am happy to say that it was as good as the first time.
The ending was a bit confusing since the actors of the main characters played their role twice, once as the main characters, then as the grown up children of the main characters!
I don't remember getting confused when I saw it the first time in Italian. But then my French is not as good as my Italian! I have also grown older!!

5 out of 5 stars waited a long time to see it again.......2007-03-14

I saw this movie with a dear friend back in 1982 while visiting his family in the Netherlands. I was in love with the movie and emotionally moved by the story and the music that I desperately wanted to see it again. When I returned to the the US, the movie never came to my hometown's film festival--probably only showed in theatres along our coastal states. I came across some old journal entries and had a notation about the movie. I longed to see it again so I went on-line,typed in the title and there is was on DVD! Cannot wait to see it.

5 out of 5 stars What I tell my friends.......2007-02-13

This movie moves me very deeply. The first time I saw it was at the cinema. When ended the whole audience applauded for 5 minutes. Nobody seemed to want to leave.
This movie confronts you with the facts that we humans are connected and cannot ignore eachother. While I am writing this review, somewhere there is a baby being born and/or a man being shot. Somewhere in time I might actually meet this baby or the mother/wife/child of this man. If you are aware of this fact you cannot ignore the world around you. Lelouche made us see this by showing the lifes of those families around the globe and how somewhere in time they (their offspring) meet

5 out of 5 stars yet disappointed..........2007-01-11

This video is one of my very favorites and I was happy to be able to purchase it through Amazon, since the video is not available in The Netherlands. But the copies(2) I bought from Amazon are not suitable for my TV system, so they are now on the bottom of the drawer with 'disappointments'.

I believe Wallmart will be the first to sell them but lets hope Amazon picks them up quick!

5 out of 5 stars Cantinflas in WIDESCREEN!!!.......2003-12-25

I was so excited to see these classic films in widescreen format, I had to get them. I wish Movie distributors would do this more often. I like to collect classic Mexican movies and I always like to watch them the way they was meant to be watched.

Now that VHS players are becoming obsolete, I hope they start putting more of these movies on DVD.

Great films!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Vintage Cantinflas Comedy.......2003-12-17

Charlie Chaplin once called Cantinflas "the world's greatest comedian." Most Spanish speaking people would tend to agree. It was with great anticipation that I had been waiting for any sign of Cantinflas on DVD for about 5 years now. I had given up, until Dec 1 2003 when I found this DVD bundle on Amazon.

If you're reading this, I'm assuming that you've already seen the movies and you know how funny Cantinflas movie's are. So I won't go into detail about the movies themselves. They're all hilarious and they're all vintage Cantinflas. The golden age of Mexican theater.

About the technical aspects of the movies. Unlike what the info says, all movies are in Spanish, with English subtitles. The quality of the movies is very good, but don't expect Lord Of the rings DVD quality. Which is normal for movies made for that era that have been ported over to DVD. You'll see details that you never noticed before. Eye Colours, people in the background, vivid and colourful backgrounds.

The sound quality is good, although only in mono but in Dolby digital.

The movies are all in widescreen format, which is great, because for the first time you'll be able to see all of the scenes the way they were originally made.

Will you enjoy these movies if you're not a Spanish speaking person? Chances are yes, I read the subtitles while I was watching the movies, and most of the time, I found the humor translated fairly well. Sometimes, the translation was even funnier that Cantinflas original comments. Alot of time was put into the translation, it was very well done. You'll need to have an open mind though, don't expect Jim Carrey type of humor.

All in all, a great DVD package. I highly recommend it, well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars The Bolero Kings.......2007-05-01

The Trio Los Panchos were an enormously influential part of Latin music history, and they gained international fame with some of the most romantic music ever heard; they brought the bolero to the world, and though hundreds of trios have copied them, some very successfully, there's nothing quite like the original Los Panchos. The principal singer changed through the years (we see 4 of the 7 on this DVD), but the essential sound and heart and soul of the trio, with its exquisite musicianship and harmony, remained the same. They started in New York City in 1944, with 2 musicians from Mexico, Alfredo Gil (1915-1999), and Chucho Navarro (1913-1993), and from Puerto Rico, Hernando Aviles (1914-1986), who was the first principal singer, and also returned for a short stint in the mid 50's. We get to see this original cast only in track 2, which was possibly from one of the 50 films they appeared in, as "Flor de Azalea" was written by Manuel Esperon, who scored so many of the Epoca de Oro films (take note of Pedro Vargas walking by in the background while they are singing).

Tracks 1, 3, 4 and 5 have Enrique Caceras as singer, who was with the group from 1968 through 1972, tracks 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11 have Ovidio Hernandez, with the group 1972-1976, and tracks 8 and 12 have Rafael Basurto Lara who was with the group until its final dissolution with the passing of Navarro in 1993. Tracks 1 through 3 are in black and white, the rest in color, and most have television show settings. The overall audio is alright considering the age of these clips, but some have a noticeable slight fuzziness, especially tracks 2 and 4. The DVD collection is nearly 35 minutes in length, and has an "extra" of a narrated biography, which is 13 minutes long, and not to be missed. It includes an interview of the 3 original members with Raul Velasco from 1984. Gil and Navarro also wrote some classic hits, which are still recorded by top artists today. Tracks 5, 7 and 8 were written by Navarro, tracks 6, 9 and 12 by Gil. Song list:
1: "Contigo"
2: "Flor de Azalea"
3: "Sin Ti"
4: "No Me Quieras Tanto"
5: "Una Copa Mas"
6: "Vagabundo"
7: "Lo Dudo"
8: "Rayito de Luna"
9: "Caminemos"
10: "Quien Sera?"
11: "Recuerdos de Ti"
12: "Si Tu Me Dices Ven (Lodo)"

HOY COMO AYER (MORE,BENNY)

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality.......2006-11-06

It was a boring presentation of a great talented Cuban singer. No comentary, no color, all in b&w, with lots of old good songs. No concert however and no reaction from the audience, I gave the tape away in Cuba, to an old fan of Benny More.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Benny.......2006-11-05

This DVD helped me understand the impact that Benny More had on the people of Cuba during his career. I saw that he was a legend of great stature and was a native son who was loved by the poor and humble people who danced to his music.
As an artist, Benny More was an originator and is responsible for many hit records. This DVD outlines his career and gives you a strong idea of what his music did for popular Cuban music. The interviews with fellow musicians and family members gives life to the CD. If your a fan of Cuban music and the impact it has had on American culture, you'll see that Benny More was a pioneer in the field and probably the best vocalist to rise out of Latin America.

4 out of 5 stars Great for big fans, but not enough of Beny himself.......2006-07-11

This does a great job of telling the story and presenting some performances from the 50's. But perhaps the highest quality performance is from a Mexican movie - and the song is cut off. For some ungodly reason, the directors decided to break into the song with narration. I wanted to see as much footage of Beny himself - which I'm sure exists. This disappoints in that respect, but there is enough great parts to make this well worth it!!
