Thanks in large part to its meticulous re-creation of the late 1960s and early '70s rock scene and the uncannily authentic performance by Val Kilmer as legendary Doors front man Jim Morrison, Oliver Stone's hypnotic film biography is standing the test of time. Capturing the carefree mood of the Age of Aquarius, the film charts the meteoric rise of the Doors on the California club circuit (including a memorable scene showing the creation of the hit "Light My Fire"), and chronicles the band's exploits with hallucinogenics and Morrison's battles against charges of public indecency on stage. Kilmer's performance is hauntingly perfect, and performances by Meg Ryan, Kathleen Quinlan, and Kyle MacLachlan are similarly impressive. The movie doesn't fully probe the depths of Morrison's character, but as a portrait of excess it is vividly true to the spirit of the self-destructive poet known to his fans as "The Lizard King." --Jeff Shannon

Nice concept, shaky execution--that about sums up the mixed blessings of British actor Peter Howitt's intelligent but forgivably flawed debut as a writer-director. It's got more emotional depth than most frothy romantic comedies, and its central idea--the parallel tracking of two possible destinies for a young London professional played by Gwyneth Paltrow--is full of involving possibilities. It's essentially a what-if scenario with Helen (Paltrow) at the center of two slightly but significantly different romantic trajectories, one involving her two-timing boyfriend (John Lynch) and the other with an amiable chap (John Hannah) who represents a happier outcome. That's the film's basic problem, however: The two scenarios are so romantically imbalanced (one guy's a total cad, the other charmingly sincere) that Helen inadvertently comes off looking foolish and needlessly confused. Still, this remains a pleasant experiment, and Howitt's dialogue is witty enough to keep things entertaining. It's also a treat for Paltrow fans; not only does the svelte actress handle a British accent without embarrassing herself, but she gets to play two subtle variations of the same character, sporting different wardrobes and hairstyles in a role that plays into her glamorous off-screen persona. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Take it to a higher level.......2007-07-03
I loved how there the parallel plotlines running simultaneously made me entertain the idea of living in multiple dimensions. For me, it wasn't a case of "what if" I take one road over the other, it was more that you can make many choices and choosing one over the other takes you on different paths of learning with very different dynamics at play. In the end, the lessons are learned, and one ends up exactly where one has been destined to be...for some purpose.
Disposable entertainment.......2007-03-21
Every once in a while, a big actor makes a big mistake. One example is Gwyneth Paltrow, who wasted her time with an uninteresting and utterly pathetic movie "Sliding Doors".
"Sliding Doors" is a movie that will, despite some humorous/well-acted scenes, leave you feeling numb and sorry that you have wasted your time. It is a stroy of a beautiful Londoner Helen who, after losing her job and thinking that the day couldn't get any worse, gets to live it twice, in two parallel worlds, both of which start when one Helen manages to catch the train and the other one doesn't. It may seem like an interesting premise, but in reality it falls flat. The makers of "Sliding Doors" obviously haven't thought this one out, because as soon as the two stories start overlapping, we are turned off by the lack of anything interesting happening in either of them.
Gwyneth Paltrow is a joy to watch, but maybe in a different movie. "Sliding Doors" fails on many levels, as a comedy, drama or a love story. The ending is at least a little bit enjoyable, but remember - you have to sit through the whole thing first.
Engaging comedy.......2007-03-03
An engaging English comedy, with an ingenious plot. In this case, the idea is that according to if one did or not did a particular action a particular day, your life will take a very different path. In one instance, one Gwyneth Paltrow catches the underground, and arrives home early to see her boyfriend cheating on her; this prompts her to leave him and start a new life. The other Gwyneth misses the underground, and does not catch her philandering boyfriend in delito fragante; her life will continue for a while on a mediocre path. The plot is surprisingly easy to follow (that the "two" Gwyneths has different hair styles help a lot in this regard). Paltrow is very charming, as is John Hannah, a bloke Gwyneth meets on her recovery (and also has a minor role in the second story). Without them the movie would not have been nearly as good. Jeanne Tripplehorn, on the other hand, as the "other" woman, is far less effective. The ending is somewhat unsatisfactory, but this movie is very much well worth seeing.
Sliding Doors.......2007-01-27
A film about what if. What if you made a decision, what if you were delayed, what would the consequences be? This film explores a year in the life of a woman where one tiny incident could change a life. Travel down both possibilities, and guess which one really is happening. Makes you think...
this romance is original.......2007-01-11
I never knew that I actually liked Gwyneth Paltrow until I saw this film. I love this movie. It is enjoyable each time I watch it. Of course, I would like to change the ending sometimes, but I still find myself watching it again every few months. This is a fun, unique movie about destiny and it's worth your time to view it.

If you are a new or original fan of the Doors, this spectacular DVD should give you enough incentive to jump on the DVD bandwagon without reservation. It's quite simply the finest single audio-visual source of Doors music and history, presented with the full participation of the band's surviving members (Ray Manzarek, Robbie Krieger, John Densmore) and featuring a variety of bonus features that will send any Doors-phile into a state of rock & roll euphoria. We're not kidding, folks--this is a must-have disc for anyone who's ever been mesmerized by Jim Morrison and the late-1960s, early-'70s rock phenomenon known as the Doors.
The primary content consists of three acclaimed films, all running about an hour long and directed by Manzarek, that give the viewer a deeper appreciation of what the Doors were all about. Not only was the band filmed in a variety of live concert settings (especially at the legendary Hollywood Bowl show, included here), but they were also precociously aware of the value of film, creating music "videos" long before MTV and taking their cue from Manzarek's mid-'60s stint as a UCLA film student. Also included are clips from several TV appearances (including a PBS interview in which Morrison predicts the future of recording technology with astounding accuracy), revealing backstage footage, and, of course, some of the most hypnotic concert performances ever filmed.
Two of Manzarek's student films (Evergreen and Induction) indicate that the keyboardist could easily have become a successful director, but fate blessed him (and us) with a future in one of America's all-time greatest rock bands. What The Doors Collection conveys more than anything is that these four young men formed a unique cohesion of talent, that they all loved and admired Jim Morrison (and still do), and that they continue to share that love--along with some conflicting recollections and amiably contrasting opinions--on a commentary track that's wise, fun-loving, and refreshingly free of drippy nostalgia. Indeed, when Manzarek uses the word "atrocious" to describe Oliver Stone's 1991 film about Morrison and the band, he's merely defending the fact that Morrison was himself a sweet, lovable young man who had a dark side--no one's denying that--but who also fronted a band that continues to unite listeners and viewers in the positive spirit of creativity and freedom of expression. --Jeff Shannon

MEMORIES.......2007-03-22
I have this DVD and consider one of the best I own.
I am soooooo glad I have it now. I am of the age that actually got to
enjoy the Doors in the 60"s. It actually brings tears to my eyes along with much joy.
It brings back so many wonderful memories of their music
in those days all over the radio. Jim Morrison was such a big talent.
This DVD with the other band members gives you the real look of the doors, especially Jim Morrison.
The man was such a great talent. It shows that he had a sense of humor,
he was a poet, a song writer, an author, and a very kind man.
I wanted some real footage and concert material, not make believe as
the movie was. The movie was such an insult to Jim Morrison's memory.
I recommend any genuine Doors Fan to own this DVD, you will be glad you do.
Not what I expected, but still pretty dang good.......2007-03-18
I wanted to see more live Doors than this DVD has, but theres a lot of MTV/VH1 style music videos on here. Studio songs with video dubbed on. Bummed me out. But still there is plenty of great live video of the Doors on here I have never seen, and I've been a Doors freak since about 1969. May as well get this and enjoy it since theres not really anything else out there in terms of live documentary concert footage.
The Doors Collection (Collector's Edition).......2007-02-12
It was a good buy. My favorite video was The Doors Live at the Hollywoodbowl. i watched it two times. Defiantly a good but dor a Doors fan
A lot of bang for what you are paying for.......2006-12-26
While not totally comprehensive, there's a lot of material here to absorb and enjoy. After you watch the DVD, be sure to check out the band commentary as it's awesome; lots of fun anecdotes and insight. I enjoyed the bonus extras as well; re: Manzarek student films, memorabilia gallery w/commentary and photo shoot for Morrison's Hotel
I hate to encourage a further money grab, but it would be nice to have a comprehensive "ultimate" collection w/everything available on one edition; not just material here, but all of The Doors available video stuff on one release. New menus, get rid of some the bad editing/silhouettes from Soundstage (if that's possible), new material (there's got to be some) etc. DMC is probably planning something like this for the future.

What the hell is this?.......2007-05-01
I'm a huge Doors fan(there my favorite band), but this thing is horrible. They make Morrision look like a drunk jerk with a beer bottle in one hand and a microphone in the other. I know sometimes he was like that, but that wasen't all of him. He had a great sense of humor and he was a really smart guy(his IQ was 149 in high school). I've heard the other Doors members talk about this movie and they hate it. This is not the true story. This is the way Oliver Stone saw it. This movie just got me mad.
Good movie but not a balanced story.......2007-04-22
It kind of reminded me of "Sid and Nancy" (Jim and Pam?), where a lot of liberties were taken to keep the story interesting, and mixed characters up, and the truth is in the music.
Ray Manzarek said in an interview that the Miami incident cost his father a promotion, even though Doors money continues to roll in to a father he considered "dead". Jim's background before he became famous to me is more interesting, what led up to the Lizard King that started as a chubby Navy brat. You can also go on You Tube and see some of the projects like "Hwy" he worked on (should be on video, as should "Feast of Friends").
"No One Here Gets Out Alive" was where a lot of the story comes from but a lot is left out.
As a movie, the music propels it, Morrison's poetry, and Val Kilmer really gets deep into it, definitely one of his most memorable roles, if not THE most. Irony that he was a Navy pilot in "Top Gun" and was the rebel son of a Navy Admiral in this?
The members of The Doors all wrote books all worth checking out.
Val Kilmer at his best.......2007-03-28
Great movie and performances from all. Not sure why he didn't get a nomination.. must have to any collection
Oliver Stone is drunk on Jim Morrison.......2007-02-08
The Doors
Some reviewers seem annoyed that the film is actually about Jim Morrison and not about The Doors. And it's true. The band seems like a canvas upon which Jim Morrison can sing, act out, drink, and otherwise remain perpetually painted at the forefront of this film. Oliver Stone's camera is enamored with Val Kilmer's Jim Morrison. And Kilmer's performance is quite exciting, indeed. But I wonder why Stone lets Kilmer steal the entire movie. Where are The Doors? Where's the history of the band? The movie suggests that The Doors revolve entirely around Morrison and that the stories of the other band members, while likely less crazy and sensational, are not at all interesting without Morrison's presence and influence.
I think the tragedy of Jim Morrison's life is that he actually believed that drugs, sex, and alcohol - mixed with a soul trapped by societal conventions - somehow opens the artist to the infinite beauty of the universe. But really, it's pain that drives all good art. Morrison writes, speaks, and sings of his poor relationship with his parents. He sought the convention of a happy family by desensitizing himself rather than facing his fear of utter abandonment honestly and soberly. It's this pain that makes Morrison somewhat sympathetic. Despite his determination to live as an alcoholic drug addict, some pain seeped out, taking the forms of poetry, film, and music.
Perhaps psychoanalyzing Morrison is too easy, but we aren't given much else from Stone and Kilmer. Whenever Morrison appears drunken and aggressive in front of the band, watch the faces of the band members. They know exactly what's wrong with Morrison as they fight the futile battle of getting Morrison sober enough to sing another song.
Doors opening.......2006-12-04
Calling this movie "The Doors" is misleading. It would be more accurate to call it "Jim Morrison and Those Other Guys In the Band," since that is how it's presented.
It's always tempting to latch onto a rock legend in these rock biopics, and Oliver Stone clings like a limpet to the ghost of Jim Morrison. Acid-soaked scenery and mysticism are in every scene, but Stone seems content to wallow in the rock'n'roll debauchery rather than get into Morrison's head.
It opens with a voiceover of Jim Morrison's poetry, as we slowly fade into a stalled recording session. Then it flips back to 1949, as Morrison's family drives through the desert. The boy catches a glimpse of several Indians by the road -- and one of them dies as the family leaves.
Then it flips ahead to Morrison's (Val Kilmer) years at college -- he crashes a party for a pretty girl, makes arty films, acid-trips, and devotes himself to poetry. Then his pal Ray Manzarek (Kyle McLachlan) creates a rock band, with Morrison's poetry and voice as the centerpiece. Soon The Doors become a fixture in L.A. -- and then a famed band.
But as the Doors become more famous, Morrison increasingly loses himself in the messianic-Dionysian-rocker role that has been set out for him. He weds a witch-journalist (Katherine Quinlan) but loves his fey girlfriend Pamela (Meg Ryan). And when he outrages the authorities with the threat of public exposure, the spiral starts that will only lead to death.
Stone certainly knew how to evoke the golden ages of rock'n'roll. Lots of sex, kinetic concerts, and bizarre behavior where Morrison jumps up on platforms and screams, "I am the Lizard King! I can do anything!" The whole movie just kind of sweeps you off your feet.
And Stone is quite brilliant with the direction. The movie is filmed like an acid trip -- shifting multicoloured skies, Indian ghosts, shadows on the sand, and eerie lighting. And it touches on other aspects of the late sixties -- the Factory, Nico, and the belief that something violent and beautiful was about to erupt.
Unfortunately, Stone seems so enamored of the atmosphere that he never quite gets around to making a biopic. The other Doors are relegated to a frame for Morrison's bizarre behavior, and after the first half hour, they basically fade away. And he gets too enamored of his own style with the Indian ghost, and the arty "dead man" final scenes.
Val Kilmer does a shockingly good job with the languid, unpredictable energy of Morrison. He sings well too. Sadly, his performance is stuck in a one-note character -- Stone opts to potray him just as a random, sleazy, wild jerk, and we don't get a single insight into his thoughts. Sure, Morrison could be horrible. But this is Jim Morrison as rock cliche, not as a human being.
And sadly, none of the other actors get much chance to expand on their roles -- the other Doors actors, including MacLachlan, basically play slightly annoyed accessories, and Meg Ryan plays a sweet girl without many other dimensions. Although Crispin Glover has a tiny, memorable role as Andy Warhol.
"The Doors" opens into a beautiful psychedelic movie, but Stone fails to give it a soul. It's a fun biopic full of the sixties atmosphere, but it never quite manages to be much more.

A bittersweet film about a Chinese-American family living in New York, Red Doors offers moments of humor as well as emotional triumph. Though the Wongs may appear to be the perfect nuclear family to outsiders, they're really just your typical dysfunctional American family. Helmed by first-time director Georgia Lee, this indie film is to be applauded for presenting a different type of Asian-American family than the model one that's been mythologized in the media. Dad (Tzi Ma) is suicidal. Eldest daughter Samantha (Jacqueline Kim) gifts him with therapy sessions, middle daughter Julie (Elaine Kao) is a confused lesbian, and Katie (Lee's real-life sister Kathy Shao-Lin Lee), the youngest, has a disturbing relationship with a neighborhood boy that involves dead rats, explosives, and no sense of boundaries. Therapy actually wouldn't be wasted on Katie, who often appears emotionally dead. When she catches her father trying to hang himself (one of 30 or 40 suicide attempts, as he tells his therapist), she doesn't blink an eye. Rather, she calmly announces that lunch is ready. In their own ways, the family members come to terms with their individual crises. The actors, especially the expressive Ma, are convincing in their roles. But overall, Lee doesn't provide enough cohesiveness with either the story or the pacing to make viewers truly care about the complicated Wongs. --Jae-Ha Kim

Soo funny, romantic, and just keeps you interested.......2007-06-26
i really enjoyed this movie, it has 4 different story lines involving the father of the family and his 3 daughters, each coping with their own issues. Sam struggles with her boring predictable new york life and soon to be husband, julie can't find a good asian boy and ends up falling for the famous actress who is prepping for a film at julie's hospital, and katie keeps getting in trouble for pranking a boy she likes. Their father has just entered retirement and keeps trying to kill himself. Well, it makes for a movie that shows that no family is perfect, not matter how much they seem to be, and it shows that everyone can be their own person and find happiness. It's a very interesting, creative, and funny movie that you shouldn't miss.
Really should have been a daytime soap episode... .......2007-05-27
That's what I wrote in some notes I took at the time I saw this in theatre a few months ago, on a double bill with the delightful "Linda Linda Linda". I was obviously not the only one left cold -- even though "Red Doors" was the promoted 'feature' film (by a protege of Martin Scorsese yet) it was sparsely attended compared to the enthusiastic audiences for "Linda". I thought "I must just not get it" so went back for a second viewing .. and still don't get the enthusiasm the other Amazon user reviewers show for this film. (During the local showing, the Boston Globe reviewer was lukewarm to "Red Doors", as is the Amazon editorial reviiewer. So I'm not the only grumpy gus.) It's telling that three months later, I have little visual memory of "Red Doors", while "Linda..." is fresh in my mind. (I'm writing this from those notes.)
Not that "Red Doors" is bad. It has high ambitions, and there is much well done on a scene-by-scene basis, but somehow the various plot threads just do not gel into a coherent whole. And though the crew and cast all seem like nice people, to be honest the acting (or is it the script forcing the performance?) is often strained and awkward.
While not a fully mature Hollywood type film, it also lacks the spark that distinguishes the best freshman efforts and independent films. It's too much as if it was written from a paint-by-numbers box. The plot, the various elements, are cartoonish, in broad exaggerated strokes. Dad isn't merely depressed, but suicidal, and not in a cute fake "Harold and Maude" sort of way -- the only reason his suicide attempts don't work is a combination of bad luck and a seeming lack of energy to carry them out. Med student (intern?) Julie's affair is not just with one of the numerous women in the health care setting, but with a glamorous and famous actress. (Plus, even on two viewings, it's not clear if this is her first experience with another woman -- there's no sense of context.) Sam's blonde bombshell of a trophy fiancee is just too handsome, politically correctly sweet, and lifeless. And so on.
I'd really rate this about 3.5*, but rounded down to counteract the (to me) overenthusiastic 5* reviews. It's not like this is the first or only Asian-American family drama (see the wonderful "Double Happiness" with Sandra Oh, for one of many instances) and deserves bonus points for its uniqueness. It tries very hard, and maybe that's the problem -- it just doesn't flow.
Funny and poignant.......2007-03-26
Red Doors is a film about a dysfunctional Chinese-American family living in a suburb in New York. The parents Ed Wong (Tzi Ma) and May-Li Wong (Freda Foh Shen) have three daughters: Sam (Jacqueline Kim) who is the oldest, Elaine Kao (Julie) is the middle child, and the youngest daughter is Katie (Kathy Shao-Lin Lee).
Ed had just retired and is trying to figure out how to excape the dullness of his life. His daughters are experiencing their own dysfunctional dramas.Sam is a business woman who is getting ready for her impending nuptials to Mark (Jayce Bartok) but when an old high school flame returns to town, Sam begins to question if she is ready for marriage. Julie who is a med student who is excelling at her studies but when it comes to her personal life, she doesn' t exactly get a passing grade due to her acute shyness. Her world is quickly turned upside down when she meets a popular actress named Mia Scarlett (Mia Riverton), and eventually becomes romantically involved with the actress. Katie is engaged in a prank war with her next door neighbor's son Simon (Sebastian Stan). When Ed suddenly up and leaves the family, the girls are forced to re-examine their lives and how to live on accordingly to what their heart says, not what is expected of them by family obligations (sort of an invisible fence).
I loved Red Doors. The home video footage of which I assume is from Georgia Lee's childhood added an authentic feel to the film. The ending though left me a bit unsatisfied. I hate it when films end on such a broad note. I was hoping that this film would have come to one of my local arthouse theatres but it didn't. I had to wait for it to come out on dvd. The relationship between Julie and Mia reminded me that of Wil and Vivian in the other Asian American film Saving Face(which is one of my all time faovrite films). It was complicated because Julie is more introverted while Mia is more extroverted, plus Mia was a popular actress which throws a monkey wrench into their relationship. Still the way the conflict was resolved between Julie and Mia was certainly more realistic than Wil and Vivan's. There is an obvious great love between the family members in the film especially between the mother and her daughters. I wish the film ended with some sort of resolution to the father's situation. Overall excellent film.
Great story.......2007-03-10
This is a fantastic film that has clearly defined characters that I cared about and a story that kept me interested thoughout the film. It is really a slice of suburban life, kind of like American Beauty with a much happier ending. Check this out.
Taking life as it comes - this is a film to enjoy.......2007-02-14
This is a rare film. Nothing is trite or predictable; it's a very creative script that makes each character endearing. There are no bad guys here, just people taking life as it comes. Others have said that this could be any family, not specifically an Asian-American family and I think that is the point: the laughter and the tears transcend heritage or skin color.

This documentary by Murray Lerner (From Mao to Mozart) was shot in 1970, but for many reasons was not shown to the public until 1995 in Great Britain. In an important way, it is the final chapter in an unofficial trilogy of concert films (along with Woodstock and Gimme Shelter) that together paint a picture of the highest and lowest points of Woodstock Nation politics: from mass goodwill to anarchy to outright stupidity. On the one hand, Message to Love is a rock & roll movie with several performances that are outright revelations (the Who's triumphant show, the Doors' "The End"), some that are awfully good (Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun"), and more than enough that are superfluous (Ten Days After, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Jethro Tull). On the other hand, Lerner's cameras are trained on the increasingly testy relationship between nomadic hippies who travel a long way to see the show but refuse to pay, and concert producers who resort to using guard dogs, cops, and aluminum walls to keep crashers at a distance. Just how bad does the mood become after several days of this? Check out the scene in which Joni Mitchell breaks down in tears after singing her ode to peace and love, "Woodstock," before this lot. In an era when we've become used to extraordinary security and high ticket prices at rock concerts, it's perhaps hard to grasp what the fuss was about at the Isle of Wight. But Lerner's amazing film helps a viewer get a sense of what was really at stake in that period before rock & roll was a corporate matter, and when kids naively thought it was theirs for the taking. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
This movie is heaven.......2007-05-12
I don't get the criticism of this movie. Firstly, it's damn cheap - so whatever you get is value. Secondly, I've never bothered to watch the actual movie all the way through - all I'm interested in is the music. I go straight to the titles section where you can just watch the performances uncut. That's what I wanted, and what I get is the most fantastic performances by The Who, Doors, and some bands which either aren't available anywhere else (such as Family and Ten Years After) or some bands for whom one or two performances are enough for me (such as Jimi Hendrix, Free, Taste and Leonard Cohen).
For me, that's the beauty of buying a Festival movie - fairly short clips of bands. If I want more, I buy a DVD of that band. Since buying this movie, I've been inspired to buy more by The Who and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, whereas it has put me off buying anything by Jimi, much as I like his music (on CD).
When the music's over.......2007-02-14
A poorly made documentary focusing on the problems surrounding the festival's producers. Every music clip in this film has been edited down, sometimes to no more than a few seconds, so the creators of the movie could slip in a few more of the countless interviews with hippie's proclaiming the freedom of the music and the show promoters worrying over how they're going to pay the musicians and beat the bad publicity. There wasn't enough room to include a single entire performance of any song by any of the bands featured, but there's enough room to show interviews with burned out hippies in their entirety, interviews that consists mainly of babbling or long pauses while they try...to...remember...the...right...words...man.
It's obvious that the creators of the film wanted to focus on the deterioration of the hippie generation, but if they were trying to make a statement, they were about 30 years too late. The only statement this film makes is one of frustation. The audience of this film will feel much like the flower children featured in the movie, caught outside the festival, trying to get a glimpse of the music they love through a fence that the people in charge won't let them through.
The music is great but..........2007-01-03
There's great vintage shots and sounds from Free, Tull, The Who, ELP and others but all the other documentary stuff, while interesting, I found distracting and boring.
kinda disappointing.......2006-07-04
Depending on whether your interest lies in viewing this as a historical document or as a concert video you will probably be either less or more disappointed.I was expecting something more similar to Woodstock in which you were able to see the artists entire performance instead of edited versions of the songs.I could have done with a lot less of disgruntled hippies and more music. Some of the performances were great(The Who,Moody Blues,Miles Davis,ELP,Jetro Tull).Others were mediocre, most notably The Doors.Even Hendrix was not as good as in days past.So much for the hippie utopian dream that was portrayed in the Woodstock movie.
only 5 mins of Alvin Lee/Ten Years After!!??.......2006-02-27
..whats all that about? I'm putting this crap on eBay first chance I get, I'm totally disgusted at the editing ,not because of how it was edited at the time of original release, but because they have not extended the songs to there original length . Ten Years After's 'I cant Keep from crying' with extended guitar solo from Alvin Lee, was nearly 20 minuites long and they put barely 5 minuites of it on here. This could have been made into an extended package, like most reissued/remastered concert footage has been . There is little enough footage of Ten Years After&Alvin Lee out there, yet Jethro Tull's full Isle of Wight 'full' 1 hour set has been released on DVD . Nice remastering, shame about the footage.

3 Doors Down Away From The Sun.......2007-05-06
An excellent concert footage from last years tour . Having seen them live in concert this is without a doubt as close to being at one of their concerts. Only flaw i saw was a jittery camera on one or two songs like the camera man had too much caffeine .
Excellent.......2007-04-25
Amazing, very impressed, but the lead could have a bit more character and seems a bit stiff. Other than that a top quallity Show, Production and Product. Monster is amazing. More DVDs should be like this.
On my top 10.
Ear Blastingly Outstanding.......2007-02-12
Finally a music DVD that does a band justice. The band blows you out of the room,...literally, they sound awsome. And the function that alternates between audience and on-stage mix is excellent, you can really hear the difference and both sound gr8. Believe me, its worth going out and spending thousands of dollars on a sound system just to hear 3 Doors Down play on this DVD, and even better, it plays on Australian DVD players. 3DD are a monumental band, crank it up cuz this DVD shows just how good they really are - a must for any 3DD fan.

WOW! I have to say that this DVD is one of the most excellent DVD's I have seen. If you get the chance to get it, be sure to buy it I promise you won't be disappointed! I do have all 3 of their DVD's and they are all excellent, however that is just how 3 Doors Down is... Monster Music has done an extremely excellent job with this DVD... This is a must have!

This DVD is awesome. Monster Music has done a great job at making 3 Doors Down sound better. I didn't think it was possible but it was. It feels like you are sitting in the front row of the concert. The surround sound is great. Plus you can download the mp3's right off of the DVD. AWESOME

Description
Jim Morrison (Val Kilmer), one of the most sensual and exciting figures in the history of rock and roll, explodes on the screen in THE DOORS, the electrifying movie about a time called the sixties and a legendary outlaw who rocked America's consciousness - forever. Meg Ryan, Kevin Dillon, Kyle MacLachlan, Frank Whaley and Billy Idol also star.
Customer Reviews:
Great Movie for Boomers.......2007-05-12
This movie transported me back to the 60's. It brought back some great memories. The sound track is excellent!!!!!
Nice!!.......2007-05-10
If you just want to have a good time and not worry about details related to biography, this is the perfect The Doors movie.
Surprisingly tedious.......2007-05-04
The best performance in the film was Kyle McLachlan's Ray Manzarek, even though his part was small. Val Kilmer lacks charisma in his portrayal of the late charismatic singer Jim Morrison. How can a man who is perpetually stoned and wrapped up in his own little world be interesting or charismatic? I found Kilmer's Morrison unlikeable and unwatchable. The Stone/Kilmer Morrison has no redeeming qualities - casually and carelessly hurting everyone in his path with his selfish, hedonistic lifestyle. I actually fast-forwarded through quite a bit of this film because every scene was just "more of the same".
Re-Issue Crap.......2007-02-12
Yet another re-issue and shaft job by the movie industry making DVD's, and releasing them with a few more extras one to six or seven years later. Give these crap re-issues one star, not based off the movie, but the shaft job done to loyal DVD customers. If you must buy this release, ALWAYS BUY USED. That way the vultures who play unfair won't make a profit off you. Then sell your old release, which will hopefully deter more people from buying the newer version, with a cheap old version on the market, and will hit these scumbags where it hurts the most... bottom profit line. Voice your anger, ALWAYS BUY USED IF YOU MUST BUY AT ALL, and tell them you're sick of this re-issue anniversary edition crap.
Oliver Stone is drunk on Jim Morrison.......2007-02-08

For Doors completists only, this shapeless gathering of rare film clips of the band performing in Europe is hampered by the same old, frustrating problems with attempting to convey, through lousy camera work, the band's power as a live act. The packaging tells us the Doors swept through London, Stockholm, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam during a 1968 tour documented here, but there's no way to appreciate that save for a random clip or two of Jim Morrison milling about outside concert venues, talking with fans. Otherwise, we see the same sort of obfuscating on-stage close-ups of Morrison you can see in any footage of a Doors gig, stumbling around, crooning, and reciting poetry to minimalist accompaniment by Ray Manzarek on keyboards, John Densmore on drums, and Robby Krieger on guitar. Unless one can see, in the mind's eye, what the band is up to from the point of view of a kid in the 30th row, there's no way to really get the hypnotic, Dionysian effect for which the Doors were justifiably famous. Thus, for anyone who can imagine such a thing, or take it on faith, there's good reason to enjoy performances of "Spanish Caravan," "Five to One," and two versions of "Light My Fire." There's even a relic of pre-MTV, pop promotion: a silly-looking performance of "Hello, I Love You" shot before a baffled crowd on a London street. --Tom Keogh

Don't bother.......2007-01-09
You have to be a real fan to find anything positive with this DVD. It reminded me of my home movies from grade school.. It was in black and white for the most part and the sound quality was terrible !!!!
Don't Buy This, Rent It.......2006-12-21
The song list for this DVD is misleading. The first "Light My Fire" picks up midway, "Hello, I Love You" is the video of Jim singing in the street, cut with some footage of him messing around with fans, and "Alabama Song" is played over a few still shots/photos and the credits. The Jefferson Airplane commentary is boring and completely useless in terms of teaching anything, or even just being entertaining. I suspect the Jefferson Airplane interview was included because, without it, this DVD would only run about 45 minutes. If you are looking for a good concert DVD of the Doors, this is not it. Live at the Hollywood Bowl is the best. Don't take my word for it. Rent it and see for yourself.
Doors - 'Live In Europe,1968' (Eagle Vision) Running time:58 minutes.......2006-04-15
Had this documentary been in color,I'd have given it a five-star rating.I've heard other fan's comments on this DVD and personally I didn't really think the camera work/angling was ALL that bad.Not for a 1968 production, anyway.Paul and Grace of Jefferson Airplane pops in several times to narrate the concert film.Enjoyed seeing Jim Morrison's onstage antics, energy and the way he interacts with the crowd.Best songs performed were "Light My Fire",the boot stomper "Back Door Man","Spanish Caravan","Unknown Soldier" and "Five To One".A should-have for most Doors fans.

Though I have enjoyed the Doors music over the last 40 years, this is the first glimpse I have had into what this group was really like. It seems odd that some of the best music comes from those whose lives are in the worst of turmoil. It appears that Morrison was a very talented addict who was lucky enough to be surrounded by an extremely talented band. Considering the subject matter, the disc was well done and the sound was much better than I would have thought possible from old recordings. My high rating is for the quality of the disc and the accurate presentation of the material.
Incrdible Doors DVD!!.......2006-02-22
Firts off I would like to say that I'm a HUGE Doors fan, and when I watched this, it just simply blew me away! ENOURMOUSLY ENTERTAINING! It also has two members from the band Jefferson Airplane come on and talk about the tour that they did with The Doors, very intersting. I loved it and you will too!

Customer Reviews:
A great buy for a Doors Fan.......2006-01-10
I bought this DVD today and popped it into my player as soon as I got home. After hearing the first few seconds of the song I thought damn this is going to be another compilation of songs from diff concerts. I was wrong and it's a full yet short show. At first I thought man sound quality is horrible, but I got use to it. I thought to myself the quiality is exceptionale. The document footage of Presidents and riots are intresting, but the only flaw is that the footage cuts in and you miss parts of a song. If your'e a true Doors fan you could over look these flaws. All I have left to say is get the orig 6 albums, In Concert and The Doors Collection DVD and you'll be set till Bright Midnight releases another Doors concert or live DVD.
Absolutely a must purchase for any Doors fan.......2005-08-21
Yeah, I know, the sound quality is muddled, and the interspliced documentary footage can get in the way, but to me, these flaws pale in comparison to the incredible performance. For live concert footage, I haven't seen anything else that captures the intensity of The Doors when they were ON like this documentary does!! The band is just great in this concert...Morrison is mesmerizing, Manzarek's organ is haunting, Densmore's chops are blistering, and the true unsung hero of the day just might be Robbie Krieger on guitar.(the flamenco intro to Spanish Caravan is stunning)!!
If you are a fan of The Doors, this has to be in your collection. I've never seen anything that captures the true spirit of the group like this show. THIS is what The Doors were capable of when all the components were right...throbbing, intense, acid soaked theatrical rock at it's best!!
Not a bad documentary..........2005-03-18
a good chronical (sp) of the Doors in London, England. And a good doc about the acid rock scene in the UK (Doors and the Jefferson Airplane co-headlined through the UK). Problem was, Jim Morrison was not dead yet.
Yes, I used to idolise this guy, and then I grew up. Jim Morrison would have been remotely interesting if he wasnt so drunk. Singers are suppose to sing IN KEY AND IN TIME. Morrison does neither. A good frontman interacts with the audience, not stare blankly into the darkness. Thank goodness for Robbie Krieger, Ray Manzarek and John Densmore for being able to carry the songs through when Morrison was too distracted, too wasted, or too disinterested to sing (yes, you get it all in this DVD).
If youre a fan, this is for you. If you want to know about the Doors, buy a studio album and read a bio. Dont waste your time and $$$ on a video.
A Special, Not a Concert.......2004-07-12
Previous reviewers haven't made the point that isn't exact a concert film but a British television special, which means an overly creative director often interrupts a song to show period footage of riots, fighting in Vietnam, etc. Sometimes this is effective, sometimes annoying, but it does provide a historical setting perhaps useful to younger Doors fans. And the picture/sound quality isn't as bad as some reviewers indicate; this is like watching TV back in the 1960s, no better, no worse. The Doors play well, the newsreel stuff provides a context for this political band, and I don't regret buying this at all.
Exceptional Performance by The Doors!.......2004-02-10
I agree with the first two reviews. The performance is exceptional and represents the whole band at their absoulute best. Stand out tracks are a brilliant Spanish Caravan and outstanding When The Music's Over. Pity the sound quality which merits a star deduction but all the instruments are perfectly discernable and cranked up loud enough it sounds good to my ears. Its not DVD modern quality but look folks it was recorded using Granada TV's technology at that time which was 2 track mono. Not much can be done about that even if it was well recorded which I believe it was considering the equipment used. Jim Morrison shines in this performance which is his best of any of the taped performances I have seen. The concert is far better than the Hollywood Bowl show which has vastly better sound and color to it but is only an average performance. The Roundhouse show also is better than the PBS performance featured on the Soft Parade which is a good performance but features a rather worn out and shaggy Jim Morrison. This DVD feautures the Doors at their best folks and is only bettered by the 2CD set "In Concert" which was a compilation of a variety of performances but is a fantastic overall live set of the Doors produced by the late Paul Rothchild. Get this DVD the original 6 albums, the in concert 2 cd set and the Doors Collection DVD and you will have the ultimate Doors Collection.
