4 out of 5 stars What a twist at the end!!!.......2006-02-20

This was a terrific character study, as well as some action as well. The twist at the end was totally unexpected, but looking back, one could see how it was going to that. I really liked the movie because it has a very young Adrian Paul (better known for his Highlander role, Duncan MacCleod); only a bit part, and a bad boy at that. Very good movie!

3 out of 5 stars Fun Potboiler B-movie.......2002-12-16

Another vote for "guilty pleasure". This movie was implausable, a bit tacky, tawdry, but I enjoyed it anyway. An entertaining yarn. Just don't expect to feel too edified at the end of the movie! It's over-melodramatic typical B-movie fare. Also, some people might be upset by the filmmakers' obvious agenda to get a priest involved in a love affair. And let's face it, we all can tell that this is where the film is headed from the beginning.

The main stars, Tom Berenger and Daphne Zuniga are fine. Tom Berenger always does well as the handsome, tormented and conflicted hero; Daphne Zuniga was very pretty, but I was little confused about her role. There were elements of sleaze to her part (the first scene she's in certainly qualifies) and maybe she's not the best actress for sleaze. I haven't quite made up my mind about that. But still, she was capable enough.

If you are a fan of either Berenger or Zuniga, and don't mind a somewhat tacky, implausable B-movie, you'll get a kick out of this film.

3 out of 5 stars GREAT FLICK!!!.......2002-07-07

This movie is great on two levels: 1) The story is a bit far- fetched, but it is believable due some fine acting. The stars work well together to turn this into an enjoyable movie.
2) Daphne Zuniga gets naked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars High "sleaze".......2001-09-11

I own this video; I am on a fixed income so have to choose my purchases VERY carefully. I saw this movie on cable years ago & loved it so much I wanted the video. I love "sleazy" movies [in the old days classified as "film noir"]--mystery, intrigue, plot twists, "good vs. evil," suspense, plot twists & turns]... This movie has all those elements + good acting [I was young when Dane Clark was in his hey-day but have always liked him], Tom Berenger [good in both drama, thrillers & comedy], Daphne Zuniga [CONVINCING damsel-in-distress/victim] & Anne Twomey [I'd never heard of her before this!--MOST capably "playing her part well; there all the honor lies"]. I only wish Donald P. Bellisario would have directed MORE FILMS in this genre. If you like modern-day film noir with a mafia, gangster flavor, you will LOVE this movie. It's not well-known or highly-tauted by the critics, but it's one of my favorites & well-worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars Do secret vows outweigh written ones?Man,God OR US???!.......2007-02-03

RARELY WILL I EVER SAY THAT 5*s ARE NOT ENOUGH TO AWARD A FILM!!! Well..now I have said it!!!...MORE THAN 5*s!!!
The true story of Sheila and Sean Cloney in 1950's Ireland is a story of love tested under the greatest of odds. This young and much in love couple make four marriage vows:first ,secretly before the Justice of the Peace, then in Sheila's sparcely congregated Protestant Church, next In Sean's dominant village Catholic Church and then finally a private vow strictly between the two of them that was agreed upon to be the MOST binding-their love and right to decide above any other clamour.Life was idyllic in their village.Everyone of all faiths, and even of NO faith peacefully coexisted.BUT DID THEY?When it comes time to send one of their children to school, the Catholic Priest,Father Stratton, insists that it is the parents' sworn AND signed vow before God promising to raise their children Catholic that must hold sway.Sheila believes that her and Sean's secret vow was to be the most binding...and THAT'S when the test of their true love begins. What they decide will effect their families, their friends and ultimately their own ability to keep their own private vow!
Written by Stuart Hepburn, the screenplay by Deidre Dowling is briskly paced and never lacking in tention and action.Beautifully directed by Stephen Macarthy,A LOVE DIVIDED is a cinematic eyefull filmed on location in the most breathtaking parts of Ireland and Scotland by Cedric Culliton. The film is one of the rare examples of EVERYTHING and EVERYONE coming together to film THE PERFECT STORY in THE PERFECT WAY.The continued playing and singing of the immortal Robert Burns'AE FOND KISS is woven into the texture of this cinematic marvel reminding the viewer that,as the barkeep in the town put it,"Love's too precious...and life's too long without it!" What is most interesting at the end of the film are the observations that Sheila makes:"Was it the right decision?....We may never know!" It lends pause to the Bible verse "Make no vow before men"....for you just may have to actually be holden to it! GOOD STUFF!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Destruction by doctrine. .......2006-05-21

I bought this movie because it is based on true life events. Also, I have roots in Scotland and my wife in Ireland.
This movie is a strong reminder as people we need to follow our senses instead of doctrines written by men or trying keep up with the Jones's sprit.
Separation between a loving man and woman clarifies the human need to be loved and this is what makes life worth living. Life is everything if you can share it with someone you love. This movie clearly shows a man and a woman relationship will thrive in harmony in the worst environment.
I like the simplicity of this movie. It is not over stimulated with modern technology and is made well.
It is a good movie to share with friends and family. The wisdom in this movie will motivate some people to have better down to earth relationships with their spouses.

5 out of 5 stars A Poignant Film.......2005-07-08

A compelling story of the diffuculties caused by religious differences and the effects on families and friendships. Set amongst the beautiful rural scenery of Ireland and Scotland with traditional music and dance. A very moving film that still has relevance in the modern world.

5 out of 5 stars A memorable film about a family divided by religion.......2005-04-20

This Irish film is based on a true story, about a couple (he is Catholic, she is Protestant) who end up separated over the question of where the children will attend school. She promised to raise them Catholic but she didn't promise to send them to Catholic schools, and when she resists, pressure is put to bear on her. She takes off, and after that, there's a feeding frenzy with first the local Catholic priest and his congregation and then the whole nation involved in the dispute. Religion comes across looking pretty unattractive in the film, but since this story is true, it is helpful to know that the Church eventually apologized for its role in fueling the conflict.

This is a film well worth seeing, but I imagine it could be painful to watch at times for some, since the Church does not look very good in this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Totally biased film.......2004-09-25

While I cannot say about the real persons this story is about, it certainly protrays the film from an entirely sympathetic ear to the Protestant side; making most of the Catholics in the village to look like criminals which any reasonable person would realize is far than normal nor even true. Rather than give pause to the cycle of hate it only seems to stir up more resentment by catering to one side.

Coming from a mixed marriage myself I can totally relate to the challenges of a Catholic and non-Catholic couple; blame would fall on both sides and I feel this film is quite inaccurate in that sense.

I give this film a 0 in rating since it's producers could not give a balanced perspective. Truly a disgraceful film and only promotes more hatred in my opinion. Definately not something you want your kids to watch so they can start picking and choosing who their friends will be and who they will not.

The 1990 film Bullet in the Head engages at every turn. At once a political epic, a story about childhood friends and loyalty, as well as a tale of corruption and war, John Woo's action-packed face-off contrasts '60s idealism--the Beatles and Elvis--against the shifting tide in the East. It's plain that Woo has pulled his trio of heroes straight from Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America as well as Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter, but there are bits of Nicholas Ray's Rebel Without a Cause tossed in for good measure. The old Chinese way of life is fading in the face of the emergent Vietnam War and Chairman Mao's Red Army, and Hong Kong struggles under archaic British rule. Three friends--Ben (Tony Leung), Frank (Jacky Cheung), and Paul (Waise Lee)--rub up against gang warfare, capitalism, and opportunism in a life that is strongly tinged by Western culture. Ben falls in love and wants to marry Jane (Fennie Yuen). Frank has borrowed money from a warlord to pay for his pal's bridal bash but a rival group, led by Ringo and his thugs, are hell-bent on keeping loose-cannon Frank from keeping his promise. The boys kill Ringo in a face-off and the cops come looking for them, separating Ben and Jane. The trio escapes to exploited luck-of-the-draw Saigon to make their fortunes. Luck, however, isn't with them. In a violent, balletic dance to honor, greed, and a teenage pledge that is challenged with adulthood, Bullet in the Head is sentimental despite its exquisitely choreographed blood bath; it's steeped in the kind of code-of-ethics morality that has been the glue of buddy films since the beginning of cinematic time. Bullet in the Head is a tale of love and betrayal played out against a backdrop of wartime chaos, and while Woo had made other vital and vibrant movies--The Killer, Hard Boiled, and A Better Tomorrow--none were as impassioned as Bullet in the Head. That it retains its innocence at all is a tribute to this Hong Kong action auteur, who brands his movies with visual flair as well as a palette splattered with blood. --Paula Nechak

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I hope this one is picked up by Dragon Dynasty for release.......2007-07-04

This movie was amazing. The character development was superb, coupled with excellent acting. The story follows three young friends through their young life as friends through a journey that none will forget. The action is amazing, and in many ways some scenes are almost too intense to take. I loved the movie, seeing what happened to each character, and the way some peoples lives end up far different than expected. See this movie if you love movies, you will not be disapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes brilliant, sometimes painfully obvious..........2007-01-15

I saw the director's cut of this film a number of years back when John Woo was "hot" in Hollywood terms. It was, for the most part, pretty good, but it's not a perfect film. The relationship between the 3 men is done in a very heavy handed, obvious way (they constantly, and I mean constantly, say "we're buddies, we're supposed to stick together"), Waise Lee's character is very poorly written, and it's hard to believe in the usual "lost innocence" plot line when these guys are having gang fights at 15, and we're supposed to believe that life as smugglers in Vietnam made them hard boiled (so to speak). Aside from that, the film has great setpieces (especially a shootout in a bar), the ending has a great shootout (even though thematically it's pretty obvious where it's heading) and the rapport of Simon Yam (who gives a good performance) and the 3 main characters is surprisingly believable. As one reviewer has already said, Woo is erratic, even in his Hong Kong days. Anyone who has seen Once a Thief or Just Heroes will attest to that. Here, he's intermittenly brilliant and obvious, sometimes in the same scene. It's worth watching if you're a Woo fan. If not, you can probably skip the film.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best of Woo but still a worth while watch.......2006-12-18

Jacky Cheung, Tony Leung, and Waise Lee are friends growing up in Hong Kong 1967. When trouble arises they decide to leave for Vietnam to become smugglers. Wlile the story doesn't ever really settle on anything and you don't know exactly where the movie is going to go, John Woo manages to bring us the bloodshed and and tragic friendships that he is best known for. Tony Leung does fine in his role, Jacky Cheung is outstanding, and then Waise Lee is the ony person I questioned. Simon Yam gives his usual average performance with above average moments. The movie of course comes down to the end. Don't expect a great movie like 'Better Tomorrow' or 'The Killer' but one that is different and is worth a watch for any Woo fan.

2 out of 5 stars Your basic waste of time.......2006-08-13

This might be the perfect flick for a fourteen year-old who aspires to be a mass murderer. There is little to recommend it apart from the technical perfection of some of the cinematography and the staging of the scenes of mass destruction of people and property. Even these scenes have none of the balletic grace of Tarantino's "Kill Bill" films, his salute to the genre, or "Reservoir Dogs," which has a mystery at its core and some fine acting and dialogue that temper the violence.
"Bullet ..." is little more than two hours of broken glass, fire, blood squirts, amputation, beatings and explosions. This makes Gladiator look like a Sunday school picnic. The characters are totally flat, one-dimensional. There is virtually no plot aside from excuses generated to wreak havoc. The acting is weak, static, despite the fact that I don't understand a word of Cantonese. We are presented with a series of stereotypes (the hooker with a heart of gold, the good friend, the crazy friend and the bad friend).
Unfortunately the American stereotype of the Viet Cong as madmen -- and Saigon as hopelessly corrupt -- is reiterated here to the detriment of any understanding of Viet Nam during the American occupation. The worst thing is that -- because they are so shallow and undeveloped -- you don't care what happens to the characters. So I'll tell you and then you won't have to finish watching the film: they kill each other.
My advice-- skip it.

2 out of 5 stars John Woo loses the plot.......2006-02-25

It's a common belief that John Woo lost his way when he moved to Hollywood, but in truth his career was always highly erratic even in his Hong Kong days. For every Better Tomorrow or The Killer on his resume there's at least one disappointment on the level of Bullet in the head.

On paper Bullet in the Head looks like John Woo's most ambitious and under-rated film, but sadly it turns out to be an entirely derivative and largely ineffective shoot-em-up that blows its few good ideas in all the overkill. There's the germ of a good idea in its sprawling tale of three friends who skip the rioting Hong Kong of 1967 to make their fortune in the chaos of Vietnam, but it's quickly lost amid the cartoon carnage - this is the kind of film where Woo will add a bomb disposal man having his arms blown off to the background of a romantic parting, and that's one of the more subtle scenes. Clunking construction and wild leaps of logic abound (it's hard to take Jacky Cheung's cries of "Don't make me commit murder!" seriously after we've just seen him gun down thirty people) and the tragedy of Vietnam is reduced to the level of a video game in several over the top and largely uninvolving action scenes.

There are a few mildly effective moments, such as Simon Yam's memorable introduction, but the lasting impression is of a hack who has seen The Deer Hunter and The Killing Fields several times without ever really understanding them. Horrendously disappointing. No misjudged underappreciated lost masterpiece, just a mess.
