Description
Legendary actor Michel Serrault stars as Julien, an ornery butterfly collector. When eight-year-old Elsa and her often-absent mother move into the apartment next to his, the persistent and curious Elsa adopts a reluctant Julien as her surrogate grandpa. But when Julien leaves town for a week-long hiking expedition in the Alps to find the "Isabella," an exotic butterfly as elusive as it is beautiful, he instead discovers an uninvited companion - Elsa!

David O. Selznick wanted Gone with the Wind to be somehow more than a movie, a film that would broaden the very idea of what a film could be and do and look like. In many respects he got what he worked so hard to achieve in this 1939 epic (and all-time box-office champ in terms of tickets sold), and in some respects he fell far short of the goal. While the first half of this Civil War drama is taut and suspenseful and nostalgic, the second is ramshackle and arbitrary. But there's no question that the film is an enormous achievement in terms of its every resource--art direction, color, sound, cinematography--being pushed to new limits for the greater glory of telling an American story as fully as possible. Vivien Leigh is still magnificently narcissistic, Olivia de Havilland angelic and lovely, Leslie Howard reckless and aristocratic. As for Clark Gable: we're talking one of the most vital, masculine performances ever committed to film. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Gone With the Wind.......2007-06-20
One of the world's most cherished and enduring pictures, "Wind" was birthed in the mind of novelist Margaret Mitchell and incubated by the brilliant, obsessive David O. Selznick, who spared no expense in bringing this powerful, affecting story to the big screen. The ultra-lavish production features ornate costumes and art design, jaw-dropping set pieces and historical sequences (especially the burning of Atlanta, for which a Hollywood set was torched), all wrapped around the story of a resourceful, if not likable, heroine. Leigh plays the self-absorbed Scarlett to perfection, while Gable's Rhett is devilishly suave and fiercely masculine. Grand studio filmmaking at its aristocratic best, Selznick's brainchild nabbed an armload of Oscars, including Best Picture.
Four-Disc Collector's Edition Gives New Luster to Selznick's masterpiece..........2007-06-08
Just as Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was one of the most readable works ever written, so is David O. Selznick's production one of the most watchable films of all time. Something is happening every moment--and all of the characters relate to each other in fascinating ways only apparent after repeated viewings. It's the kind of movie that transports you to a time and place that may not have existed except in the mind of its Southern author--and yet, whatever historical inaccuracies are presented here--it's a remarkable achievement and has rightly become a part of American folklore and culture.
No other film has so many memorable "quotes" from a large cast of characters--and at the centerpiece is Vivien Leigh's striking performance as the willful Southern belle. Others around her are equally impressive, down to the smallest character roles--everyone has their moment of glory with the only weakness being the casting of Leslie Howard as Ashley Wilkes. Otherwise, the casting is perfect--Clark Gable, Olivia de Havilland, Thomas Mitchell, Barbara O'Neil, Evelyn Keyes, Harry Davenport, Jane Darwell, Victor Jory, Ann Rutherford, Rand Brooks, Ona Munson--and the wonderful Hattie McDaniel giving the most genuine display of emotion in the whole film with her "staircase scene" with Melanie when she tells Scarlett's friend what Rhett has said and done after Bonnie's death.
All of the sets, costumes, art direction and photography are of the highest order. William Cameron Menzie's production design is superb (he storyboarded the whole concept of what the scenes should look like with beautiful watercolor paintings). The one film above all others that shows what Hollywood's expertise could do with a gigantic novel when transferring it to the screen.
Much of the dialog is witty and pointed with some of the best lines delivered in mocking style by Clark Gable. An abundant amount of humor and sharp observations about human nature are present in the script. No wonder it's still the most beloved American movie of all time--not just here in the U.S. but elsewhere in the international market. It was an instant classic and still remains one, richly deserving all eight of the Oscars it won, as well as the Irving G. Thalberg Award for David O. Selznick.
Selznick would have been proud of what the Ultra-Resolution process has been able to achieve in the new 4-Disc version. Image clarity has never been as fully realized before and makes the viewing an even richer movie-going experience for today's viewers. Highly recommended.
"The Making of a Legend" is included, one of the best documentaries ever filmed about a feature film that was an instant classic with critics and public, and the "Melanie Remembers" feature gives Olivia de Havilland the chance to recall why making the film remains one of her favorite memories.
THE GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!.......2007-06-03
This is the Greatest Movie of all time because all aspects of the movie were carefully and painstakingly crafted with such precision and agility. The story is a classic and the cinematography is superb. The lighting is dream-like and the delivery of acting compliments the era that was showcased. There will never be a production such as this. Clark Gable is at his prime as the dashing Leading Man. Vivian Leigh steals all scenes and it is no wonder that she won the Academy Award for this picture. George Reeves plays one of the twins in the very early part of the movie. He is Super! This movie was well- directed and produced. It has endured the test of time. Frankly, my Dear ...You will give a Damn about this Classic. Pick it up today!

This four-disc set, part of Warner's Essential Classics series, collects three truly classic films--Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, and Doctor Zhivago--in one inexpensive package. The drawback is you don't get the bonus second discs of the movies--or, in the case of the deluxe version of Gone with the Wind, the third and fourth discs (the movie of Zhivago is still on a two-sided "flipper" disc)--so if you're a documentary junky or if you simply have to see the Casablanca TV show, you'll want to stick with the individual releases. But this set does include the commentary tracks and any other material that was on the movie discs of those sets, and best of all, they have the great remastered pictures of the previous releases. So if you just want the movies looking better than ever with some bonus features thrown in for good measure, the price per movie makes this set an attractive bargain. --David Horiuchi

Not Widescreen!.......2007-06-27
If you are looking for the widescreen version of these films,
do not buy this product. "Gone with the Wind" and "Casablanca"
are in standard format, not widescreen! Only "Doctor Zhivago" is
in widescreen. Very disappointing!
Essential Classics.......2007-03-10
These are three of my favorite movies with some of the best performances I have seen.
Clark Gable was great in "Gone with the Wind", but Vivien Leigh was magnificent and made me a lifelong fan with this movie.
Humphrey Bogart and the beautiful Ingrid Bergman, who could ask for more? In "Casablanca" you also get a great script and "As Time Goes By."
"Doctor Zhivago" gave me my first look into the Russia of the early 20th century. It is also a passionate love story.

The first film directed by Vincente Minnelli (who directed the original Broadway version), this musical offers its pleasures, but also may make you squirm at the racial stereotypes that were considered both acceptable and entertaining in 1943. A story of the struggle between good and evil for the soul of a man named Little Joe (Eddie "Rochester" Anderson), the film plays with the same kind of racial notions that made Stepin Fetchit a star. Still, there's much to recommend it, particularly performances by some of the greatest musical stars of the day: Lena Horne, Ethel Waters, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington, among others. The film also includes a terrific score, a combination effort by Ellington, Harold Arlen, Vernon Duke, and E.Y. Harburg that includes the song "Taking a Chance on Love." --Marshall Fine
Description
Hollywood's first all-black film since The Green Pastures tells the vibrant fable of rascally Little Joe, torn between the love of his good wife Petunia and the wiles of good-time bad girl Georgia Brown...and caught in a tug-of-war between emissaries from the Lord and Satan. How can virtue triumph over evil? Well, as Petunia says, "Sometimes when you fight the devil, you gotta jab him with his own pitchfork." Debuting movie director Vincente Minnelli (An American in Paris, Gigi) and stars Ethel Waters, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are more than a match for the devil in this musical treasure. With a soundtrack of dazzling standards including Taking a Chance on Love and Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe, Cabin in the Sky is a joyous classic.

Historical Gem.......2007-05-07
Thank God this film has been saved as a historical reference for African-Americans in film. It is a treasure, a gem and a legacy.
Old Time Religion.......2007-04-09
This is a sweet and funny tale about the dangers of sin and the way of redemption.
classic musical.......2007-03-30
overall an excellent film, despite the racial overtones. But that is understandable when you consider the era in which this film was made. The story is timeless and the performances by the cast are wonderful. I highly recommend this underrated film to anyone, especially if you are a movie history buff like me.
Cabin in the Sky.......2007-01-10
Cabin in the Sky is an amusing adventure of good vs evil. Just be cautioned to always do the right thing!
Cabin in the sky.......2007-01-09
I loved the movie. It was well done even though it was made years ago. I really enjoyed it and has loaned the movie to friends who equally enjoyed it as well. This movie should be added to your library.

Despite box-office dominance during its opening weekend, The Butterfly Effect is better suited to guilty-pleasure viewing at home. When writer-directors Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber (who penned Final Destination 2) aren't breaking their own haphazard rules of logic, they're filling this sordid thriller with enough unpleasantness to make eternal damnation seem like an attractive alternative. In a role-reversal from his That '70s Show persona, Ashton Kutcher plays a college-age psychology student who discovers, by re-reading his childhood journals, that he can revisit his past and alter traumatic events, hoping to improve their previously unfortunate outcomes. Instead, this foolhardy experiment in chaos theory (the titular "butterfly effect," popularized by Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park) results in a variety of nightmarish permutations, each having dire consequences for him and/or his friends. This intriguing premise is explored with a few interesting twists and turns, but with subplots involving child pornography, animal cruelty, and profanely violent children, it's a stretch to call it entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

Will altar your mind..........2007-06-22
Many people had mixed feelings about this film when they heard that Ashton Kutcher was to play the lead role. Could he manage to pull of such a dramatic role, profoundly different from his normally comedic role on "That 70's Show?" The answer...yes, without question!
The plot of this movie centers around the subject of time travel and what altering the past can do to the future. However, unlike many other films that deal with the same topic, this keeps an aura of dark reality about it. Not only does it deal with changing future events, it also delves into a deeper meaning than that.
Aside from the obvious premise, this film also shows that your life is your life and you are dealt the cards you are dealt. There is no need to change past events because no matter what you change, there will always be elements of your life you will not be happy with. Also, not to give anything away but unlike many Hollywood movies, this one doesn't necessarily have a happy ending which in my mind is a good thing and perfectly justifies the movie as a whole.
I must say I also felt a lot of good chemistry between Kutcher and Amy Smart. To me, Ashton has proven himself a worthy actor in not only the comedic genre, but also the dramatic roles. Amy Smart seems very natural in this role and doesn't seem to force anything.
Overall this movie is well worth owning and truly shows the potential Ashton has in becoming a serious actor. I have not and don't intend to see the sequel. This is the only "Effect" you'll need to see.
Change Your Life, Change Everything.......2007-06-19
My oppinion: The Butterfly effects is a outstanding sci-fi drama movie. This movie is awesome.
about The Film: The butterfly effect is about a colleage student Evan(Kutcher) who re-reads his childhood jurnals and seems to have the power to re live his life while reading them. most of his childhood was bad so he goes back and tries to fix it. and everytime he does it everything gets worse than What it was.
My second Oppinion: The butterfly effect is a motional trip that people will never forget i recomend this awesome movie to everyone.
if you liked this movie also check out, The Butterfly Effect 2, The Butterfly Effect orginal motion picture soundtrack andt The Butterfly effect movie novel.
GREAT MOVIE, BUT BE PREPARED FOR A DARK EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER.......2007-06-08
I first saw previews for this movie while watchin another in the theater, and was fairly interested(reminded me of Jacob's Ladder-GREAT FILM). However, upon release the critics slammed it so I waited for it to come out on DVD. The critics don't know sh**t. This was a great film!! I was mad at myself for listening to dumbass critics and not seeing it sooner. On the flip side seeing it on DVD was A good thing because I got to see the original ending that New Line would not allow. This movie is about how our decitions effect ourselves and the people around us, as well as sacrifice(wich is why the original director's cut of the movie is far superior). The movie starts with a young evan, who after visiting his friend, starts to have blackouts. After the first blackout, A doctor tell Evans mother that he should keep a journal to help him remember events that occur during the blackouts. The movie shows Evan at different parts in his like, all dealing with very traumatic events followed by a blackout. Flashforward years later, after a rocky visit to his childhood friend, she commits suicide. After her funeral he find that by reading his journals he his able to mentally time-travel to the point of the blackouts(did he cause the blackouts himself by projecting his mind? interesting paradox). Evan then proceeds to alter the past to save Keyliegh, but with every change, he alters the present to unexpected and disasterous consequences(hence the term "Butterfly Effect-from The Chaos Theory). The time travel is used in the background and to compliment the very emotional drama. fans of Jacob's Ladder, Twelve Monkeys, and the Sixth Sence will love this movie. cult classic!!!
Ashton proves he's more than a goofy actor.......2007-04-28
I thought the movie was great psychological thriller, involving a pretty typical storyline about alterations to the past causing the future to turn out in "unexpected ways"... rarely ever the way the protagonist really wants it to be. This is one of those movies that will keep your full attention for the entire length. Ashton Kutcher, in his first serious role, plays surprisingly well in this movie. He shows us a side that I hope we'll see again. But for the kind of person he is, Kutcher does an excellent job portraying his character. Amy Smart, William Lee Scott, and Elden Henson all have done a great job on acting out on different levels of their characters with the same core in each variation.
Who ever wrote this was a smart person. There needs to be more intelligent writers. It is a big responsibility to entertain our public. A movie such as this makes us think about "what if" affects us emotionally, yet changes our physical world, thus putting great responsibility on the writer. This writer did very well and I thank him. We could use more thought feed movies in our world today. Imagine no war and always peace. Would our Bush agree to war, and What would happen if we all could go back to September 11th. Too many people focus on personal gain. Would it not benefit us all in a personal way to have peace? One act of kindness can be felt around the world. One violent thought not acted upon can cause a positive movement, just like that of a butterfly. The tension builds up quickly and you're never quite given a chance to relax before the end. I like that in a movie...it keeps you on your toes.
This movie is very well done and well structured. There are no low points in this movie - each scene has a point and ties directly into the main idea of the movie. The ending is great as it made me feel sad but happy of its outcome. I'm glad that this movie was brought to my attention because its simply fantastic. I'll definitely watch this again just in case I missed anything. Recommend to those who haven't seen it yet.
Dark thriller that just misses the mark.......2007-03-29
Taking on a the plot gimmick of changing the past much like Bedazzled, Back to the future, or the TV show Quantum Leap. This isn't new territory, but this movie takes a fresh approach to the theme of changing the past and how it never works.
Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher), who suffered severe traumas as a boy copes with the pain by blacking out at moments of high stress. While searching for an answer to heal his emotional wounds, he finds that when he reads from his adolescent journals and focuses on those moments, he travels back in time, and is able to essentially fix parts of his past. There are consequences to his every choices. His alternate futures vary from frat boy to prisoner to amputee. As he continues to do this, His intentions are in the right place, the actions he takes always have unintended consequences. You know what coming from there, the butterfly effect becomes the snowball effect.
The story takes many leaps of faith and if you can get past the idea of being about to go back in time just by thinking about it you can enjoy it on some level. Ashton Kutcher does a decent job, noting that blows you away but he does what's necessary to move the story along. The supporting cast does about the same, just enough. The concept has some value and the situations are interesting and somewhat predictable. But when dealing with a movie like this where everything gets worse then gets tied up by the happy theatrical ending seems to not fit with what this film should have been. I know there is another ending but this review focuses on the original,(The Director's cut of the movie adds some amount of depth to the storyline, but differs only a little from the theatrical version of the film, as well as providing a bit more detailed look at Evan's ability) The directors cut ending is more fitting but still is a bit of a stretch, it works well to tie up some lose ends and try's to paint a certain picture about the character but still seems kinda funky to me. I liked many things about this movie but disliked about as much. The movie gets very repetitive and slightly predictable. The scenes with the children were a stretch and a bit to over the top for my tastes in this film. The level of intensity never really hit it's peak that was needed. this is a film that i can see where they were going with it and wasn't that far off, but in the end just fell short of a home run. I think with a better director and maybe a more seasoned dramatic actor this film could have reached for something more than the popcorn movie that it is. This movie is based to much in the "real world" to really sell most of these over the top ideas and situations, if it was done more in the vein of lets say a 12 Monkeys where the reality is slightly surreal and blurred as well as the theme of psychosis that the main character isn't really experiencing what he thinks he is. This is just my opinion of course but never really felt in the movie. It's worth a watch and if you can get into the movies ideas you'll enjoy it on some level.
I will mention that I'm a big Sci Fi fan and this movie was nominated for the prestigious Saturn award for best Sci Fi film in 2004 It lost to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and should have.

Amazon.com essential video
--Tom Keogh
Description
Vivien Leigh is Scarlett to Clark Gable's Rhett in cinema's greatest epic of passion and adventure. With its immortal cast, magnificent cinematography and sweeping score, this cherished classic continues to thrill audiences today. Year: 1939
Customer Reviews:

Cheesy.......2007-07-01
I watched this movie expecting it to be a heartwarming adventure. It ended up being a sentimental load of crap. It was so bad, as my eight-year-old sister said, "I wish the boy would have died of cancer!" The bugs were cool, but it was boring, and the plot smelled like a stink bug. I would rather have gone to the dentist. The best part was the credits. Save yourself the trouble, and don't watch this movie.
A very good story filled wit hope........2007-05-14
I never know Nature could be so beautiful and a story fill you with so much hope.
a lift of the spirit for anyone with a serious illness.......2006-08-08
The photography of this movie and the story are incredible, can help many individual with serious illnesses that have given up hope.
Simply Heart warming!.......2006-07-12
This movie brought tears and a smile. Inspired by a true story, a terminally ill ten year old boy's dream is realized when a Scientist who admits he's 'not good with kids' agrees to take him with him to the rainforest to seek out the almost mythical/magic-like Blue Butterfly. The movie is deeper than it seems, and we realize that all of life is a true miracle and capable of its own mysterious magic. I found this story inspiring!

Legendary producer David O. Selznick dreamed of another magnum opus like his 1939 production of Gone with the Wind; he also purposed to make Jennifer Jones, his ladylove and eventually second Mrs. Selznick, a megastar. Accordingly, he micromanaged the making of Duel in the Sun (Lust in the Dust to some), an extravagant Technicolor epic about the collision of the old West with the new, wide-open spaces with railroads and barbed wire, and hot-blooded outlaws with civilized folk, often wimpy or unwell. Beginning among giant rocks drenched in a blood-red sunset, with velvet-voiced Orson Welles intoning the leibestod legend of doomed Pearl Chavez and her demon lover, Duel never strays far from lush romanticism, spiced with a dash of S/M. Orphaned Pearl (Jones) comes to live at Spanish Bit Ranch, where frail Laura Belle McCanles (Lillian Gish) tries to make a lady of her, despite her questionable origins and insistent voluptuousness. Sexual license versus law--Pearl's choices--are symbolized by the McCanles brothers: dark, undisciplined Lewt (a lubriciously wicked Gregory Peck) and reasonable, forward-looking, repressed Jesse (Joseph Cotten). The cast is huge (Lionel Barrymore, Walter Huston, Harry Carey, Herbert Marshall, Charles Bickford, Butterfly McQueen) and there are unforgettable set pieces: summoned by a cacophony of bells, the gathering of McCanles cowboys from the four corners of the earth; Pearl in heat, clutching Lewt's leg and being dragged across the floor as he makes his getaway to Mexico; and the lovers' final shootout among those red rocks, as orgiastic a finale as you could ask for. --Kathleen Murphy
Description
From the acclaimed producer of Gone With the Wind comes a torrid tale of passion and romancethat's loaded with "all the sweep and panache of a giant American action movie" (The New Yorker)! "Flawlessly cast" (The Film Daily) with a bevy of film legends, including Jennifer Jones, Gregory Peck, Joseph Cotten, Lionel Barrymore and Lillian Gish, this salacious saga is "virtuallyimpossible not to love" (The Hollywood Reporter)! When her father is hanged for murdering his wife, the stunning beauty Pearl (Jones) is taken in by a wealthy Texan, his wife and their two grown sons (Peck and Cotten). But Pearl soon becomes trapped in an emotional tug-of-war between her love for one son and her lust for the other, igniting the most tempestuous triangle the West has ever seen!

110% Over-the-Top & I Love It.......2006-08-03
Overacted, overstaged, too colorful--"Duel in the Sun" makes that "I'll never be hungry again" scene in GWTW look understated.
The strange music, Pearl's weird dancer movements, a totally carnal Gregory Peck, Joseph Cotten so repressed that you would swear if he took off his clothes he'd be like a paperdoll with the underwear printed on, the cruelty...WOWEE. Someone said it was an opera and that's what it is, all right. They could be singing the lines with broad sweeping gestures and too much flesh and makeup.
I love this movie although, again like some other reviewers, I found it was an acquired taste.
SEX DRIVEN WESTERN FALLS SHORT.......2006-05-19
The legendary Producer David O. Selznick,of Gone with Wind Fame, wanted to produce another classic and he mightily tried with Duel in the Sun,directed by King Vidor, and starring Selznicks' paramour and later wife Jennifer Jones.
Ms Jones is Pearl Chavez a half breed who lands on her "white" relatives ranch, run by reactionary Lionel Barrymore. The fetching ms Jones attracts the attention of Barrymores' amoral son Lewt, played by Gregory Peck.
After a great opening the film becomes something of a bore with Peck playing a rather repulsive character.
Lillian Gish,Herbery Marshall, Charles Bickford,Joseph Cotton,Walter Huston, hamming it up as a bogus preacher,Otto Krueger, and Harry Carey,sr.,all lend a colorful hand to the very mediocre proceedings. The technicolor is great and there is an excellent score by Dimitri Tiomkin.
the first truely "adult" western.......2006-05-09
this is a very high camp western and as a child i didn't care for it much. now that i'm older i find i really enjoy this cheesey slice of the west. gregory peck(long before the boys from brazil)is a very bad man and he is really very good. matching him step for step is the lovley jennifer jones as his love/hate romance in the movie.
one last thing the ending is ,well the best word for it is really campy. buy it and see .
the transfer looks good and the film has never looked better.

Beautiful but incomplete.......2007-05-17
The story is poignant, to say the least. The acting is perfect--both the beautiful young boy and the lovely old man. The photography is lovely. The scenes of village life at that time are charming. Life looked almost like Paradise for a while. Politics happened and people suffered.
I failed to give this very touhing film five stars because I think it lacks as a work of art. It is imbalanced. There is so much importance given to the deep relationship of the boy and his family to the esteemed schoolteacher and then suddenly, with not enough preparation, we are subjected to the terrible cruelty of the final scene. I kept expecting something later to tie in the two extremes---perhaps the boy in later life, showing how the schoolteacher had influenced him for the good....something, anything. Leaving us with the tragedy unresolved was realistic, in one sense, but horribly upsetting and unsatisfying. As a political statement, it was surely justified, but as a work of art, it cheated us.
A wonderful glimpse into life during a civil war........2007-05-10
"Butterfly" is a wonderful glimpse of what life is/can be like for noncombatants during a civil war. I use the term "noncombatants" loosely here because as you go through the film that everyone is a combatant in some way, shape or form when civil war is going on around you: whose business do you support, who do you elect mayor and, perhaps most strikingly, what do you allow your kids to be taught in school? These are the questions that tear a small Spanish town apart at the seams during the Spanish Civil War in the mid-1920s. At the heart of the movie is a painfully shy boy who is mentored by a kind and open-minded teacher. Unfortunately, the politics of the town consipire against the two and, as the plot unfolds, the teacher and the boy must make choices that shape their futures.
This is a must see movie for anyone wanting to understand what can happen to reasonable and intelligent people when their beliefs and their families come under fire (literally). This movie is time very well spent.
Childhood Innocence Abused By Political Strife.......2007-01-22
'La Lengua de las mariposas' (BUTTERFLY) is a small miracle of a film, one of those magical experiences that reminds us about the beauty of life but also about the realities of living in a world ruled by politics and adversity and how all of that affects the vulnerable child. The Spanish title refers to the tongue of the butterfly that must trust the throat of a flower to deliver its nectar and at the same time the flower must trust the deliverer of its procreation. And there is much to be found in that brief title.
The time is 1936 in the region of Galicia in Spain when the country is on the verge of a civil war. We meet Moncho (Manuel Lozano, an amazing child actor) who is also known as Sparrow, who lives with his tailor father and housewife mother and older brother Andrés (Alexis de los Santos) who plays the saxophone. Moncho is to begin school and is terrified of being ridiculed because of the breathing apparatus he must carry to treat his asthma. But to school he goes and there he is taken under the wing of the kind old teacher Don Gregorio (the brilliant Fernando Fernán Gómez) who gently introduces Moncho to the finer things in education - the observation of nature and the miracles of life. Moncho makes friends with Roque (Tamar Novas) and together the lads discover some of the realities of life: they observe a bizarre sexual encounter which later will reveal much about Moncho's family, and they begin to learn about the political adversity that colors the lives of the conservative Catholic little community. Andrés falls in love with a Chinese girl and therein lies another complex lesson in life. Eventually the political life comes to a head and the entry of Franco's regime divides the people between republicanism and communism, and Moncho must face the cruelties that befall his mentor as he must side with his family. And the effect of the loving, meaningful relationship between teacher and pupil is left for the viewer to decide.
As directed by José Luis Cuerda and written by Cuerda and Rafael Azcona based on stories by Galician writer and journalist Manuel Rivas, the film, while always a work of great beauty and tenderness, feels a bit fragmented at times, probably due to the fact that separate stories were combined in one film, leaving portions of some sidebars with an incomplete resolution. But the wonder of the film lies in the acting by both Fernando Fernán Gómez and Manuel Lozano who together create a memorable bond that already has become a cinematic gold standard. The cinematography by Javier G. Salmones and the simple but note perfect musical score by Alejandro Amenábar set standards for Spanish filmmaking.
This is a story to inform and to remind us how we as human beings are prone to follow external influences more than obeying our hearts and caring for our souls. BUTTERFLY paints a vivid portrait of Spain on the knife of revolution and the effects such changes can make in the eyes of a child. It is a brilliant little movie. In Spanish and Latin with English subtitles. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, January 07
Butterfly.......2007-01-10
The movie was excellent. I showed it to my High School Senior class and they loved it. It also sparked an interest in background information about Spain's second republic.
Good but not Great.......2006-12-23
A very sensitive and touching movie about a boy and his teacher. It has some gratutious scenes and the story does not flow very smoothly, but none the less worth watching and the ending reveals alot about humanity throughout the ages.
