Pierce Brosnan, bloody and beaten and hysterically screaming in French, whispers a word, Innuat, into the ear of emergency-room physician Lesley-Anne Down and promptly dies. John McTiernan (Die Hard) knows how to kick off a movie, and his directorial debut, Nomads, shows a real flair for visual tension and eerie imagery. For reasons never explained, Down relives the final days of anthropologist Brosnan in mind-jolting flashes of memories that send her stumbling across L.A. and into the path of a demonic gang of black-leather punks (led by cult singer Adam Ant). McTiernan's ambition overreaches his abilities--the muddled story depends on smart people doing dumb things, and the hints of personalities merging in Down's tormented psyche remain frustratingly unexplored--but his sense of mood and mystery created solely out of suggestion is unerring. There's a fascinating movie lost in the confusion of this unsettling supernatural thriller. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2007-03-08

I received the movie within 7 days of ordering and I am overseas in Iraq. Was very pleased with the movie and the service

5 out of 5 stars One of those rare, very good supernatural thrillers!!.......2005-09-30

A renowned french anthropologist and his wife move to California - a kind of semi-retirement to teach at UCLA after years of field work with native peoples from all over the world. They move into their house and find that it has been vandalized by some local riffraff (goth-like young ruffians) driving around in a van.

The instincts of the anthropologist (Jean-Charles Pommier played by Pierce Brosnan) kick in and he's on their trail - the trail of the "Nomads".

Now most of the story is actually told through the mind/memory of a medical doctor (Lesley-Anne Down as Dr. Eileen Flax). She treats the anthropologist at the hospital when he is near death from violent injuries. (this happens at the beginning of the movie). Before he dies he communicates his soul/memory to her.

This movie is haunting, intelligent, beautifully directed - very well acted and last but not least - very interesting.

Just one very cool movie!!

5 out of 5 stars "You, They Know About You" ~ The Spirit Of Desolate Places.......2005-04-28

"You, they know about you." This may be the most chilling line of dialogue ever delivered on film. It is the pivotal moment in the movie, the moment of realization that not everything we see is real. Whether we want to belief it or not, forces exist in the universe that we dismiss or ignore at our own peril.

Such is the moment of truth for Jean-Charles Pommier (Pierce Brosnan), a sophisticated, well respected anthropologist newly arrived in Los Angeles and about to embark on a new phase in his career as a professor of Cultural Anthropology at UCLA. After years of living in some of the most remote regions of the world studying the spiritual beliefs and customs of nomadic cultures, Jean-Charles is reluctant but willing to leave the spiritual cosmos of the 'primitive' for a better life with his wife in sunny California.

He soon discovers that things are no different in the urban sprawl of a major city than they are anywhere else. The very first day in their new home Pommier encounters a troublesome, unruly band of misfits driving around the neighborhood in a black van. Curious about their anti-social behavior he follows them about Westwood secretly taking notes and photos of their activities. His findings are unexpected and earthshattering. They are Nomads (hostile, wandering spirits), and his interest in them has now turned their attention in his direction. The hunter has become the hunted and poor Jean-Charles must attempt to flee from the Nomads before it's too late.

Wonderful performances abound in this film. Pierce Brosnan and Lesley-Anne Down (as Dr. Eileen Flax) are at their best in the lead roles, but it is the supporting cast that really takes this film to a higher level. Anna Maria Monticelli is absolutely beautiful as Pommiers' loving, vulernable wife while Jeannie Elias supplies a Streisandesque burst of energy and a little comic relief as the hardnosed, agnostic best friend of Dr. Flax. Frances Bay who delivers that crucial line of dialogue at the beginning of this review has a small but significant role that she plays to eerie perfection.

There are also amazing performances to be found by those in the role of the Nomads. They don't speak a word yet have the uncanny ability to create the most disquieting, otherworldly atmosphere with nothing more than a facial expression or gesture. They're absolutely mesmerizing. Adam Ant as "Number One", Mary Woronov as "Dancing Mary" and Hector Mercado as "Ponytail" are unforgetable.

Every movie fan knows that the soundtrack plays a major role in the success or failure of a film to create the appropriate mood, or elicit the desired emotional response from the audience. In 'Nomads' Bill Conti and Ted Nuggent have provided the perfect accompaniment, successfully capturing the angry, restless nature of these hostile entities in their hard-driving, discordant rhythms. Like an incessant, demonic heartbeat the thundering music and lyrics of Ted Nuggent coupled with the etheral, exotic sounds of Bill Conti envelope the viewer drawing them into the savage, archaic Underworld of the Nomads.

Departing from the usual action/adventure features he's so well known for, director John McTiernan delivers a stunning masterpiece of psychological, supernatural terror. Nomads is as near perfect as a movie could be. However I will admit if you're not familiar with the subject of territorial spirits or shamanic transference it might be difficult to follow. Without question, "Nomads" is my all-time favorite film!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, A Great Ride.......2005-01-27

I am so glad this is on DVD. I enjoyed Brosnan's excellent work in this film. A Superb French accent, and an amazing scene in the hospital.
The Mythos behind this film is excellent, eerie, and so haunting. Worth watching, and will, if you get right into it, inspire you to look up books on the Inuit.
This is a briliant, albeit low budget, supernatural /surreal thriller.
Well worth the watch, and may inspire you to see more in this type of genre.

4 out of 5 stars This one haunts me.......2004-02-05

I first saw this movie about 10 years ago on VHS. I could not watch it alone or in one sitting. It scared the stuffing out of me. No, it doesn't serve up every answer neat and clean, it forces you to think. I don't care much for Adam Ant as a musician, but I think his casting here as an evil entity was inspired. The role played by Lesley Ann Downs would have been better served with a man in the role, making the blending of minds/spirits much smoother and the interactions a little cleaner. But overall, I've loved this movie and am happy to find it on DVD.

The Man of a Thousand Faces wears his own rugged countenance in this rousing pair of silent melodramas from the early 1920s. Though typically known for his heavily made-up portrayals of monstrous villains and disabled outcasts, Lon Chaney plays the noble leading man in the gorgeously filmed Nomads of the North, adapted from James Oliver Curwood's timeless tale of love and murder on the lush Canadian frontier. Chaney is heroic as he saves his beloved Nanette (Betty Blythe) from a snidely suitor, but he's nearly upstaged by the adorable pets Brimstone and Neela, a black Labrador and brown bear cub (respectively) who survive river rapids, cougars, and the film's climactic (and genuinely dangerous) forest inferno. The Shock finds Chaney in familiar "cripple" mode as an underworld denizen seeking redemption, foiling the dragon queen of San Francisco's Chinatown and winning the heart of a sympathetic beauty. Vague shades of Quasimodo here, and Chaney's follow-up was the classic Hunchback of Notre Dame. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Lon Chaney, one of the most gifted and versatile actors of the silent era, headlines this exciting double bill of action classics. In "Nomads of the North" (1920, 77 min.), three men vie for the love of beautiful Nanette Roland while the majestic north woods become the site for murder, a manhunt, and a raging forest fire. Chaney plays Nanette's true love, Raoul Challoner, who arrives to stop her forced marriage. An accidental death sends the couple fleeing to the north, where lawman Corporal O'Connor (Lewis Stone) doggedly pursues them--and the mayhem begins. Then, Chaney portrays dope-peddling, safecracking, handicapped hoodlum Wilse Dilling in "The Shock" (1923, 89 min.), a gripping gangster yarn. Dragging himself from the darkness of Chinatown to the redemptive sunlight of the countryside, Dilling turns away from his life of crime but finds himself pulled back when the father of the woman he loves is blackmailed. Drawn into a whirlpool of vice and intrigue, Dilling fights to retain his humanity as the film careens to a spectacular, earth-shaking climax.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The great Chaney.......2007-01-11

These two films show a non-monstrous Chaney, giving viewers a chance to see his real face (though in the first film, he's wearing a mop of a wig that's unintentionally funny).

In "Nomads" Chaney is the leading man, Raoul, whose fiancee is led to believe that he is dead. Raoul comes upon her in the midst of a wedding ceremony to the evil "other man", leading to complications that cause the two lovers, married hastily, to flee their small Canadian town for the woods. The pet animals in the film are a delight to watch, especially with Chaney so clearly enjoying his scenes with them.

In "Shock", Chaney is a hardened criminal softened by the influence of A Good Woman. Unfortunately, the Good Woman is so boring, you can't understand how Chaney's character can spend any length of time in her company without lapsing into a coma. Only in the climactic scene does she show something besides pure saintliness, and that only for a few minutes. However, it's Chaney's show all the way, and he grabs each scene and holds it effortlessly. As his character is disabled, Chaney has the chance to show off his ability to put his body into some strange and very uncomfortable postures.

A good addition to a silent-film library.

4 out of 5 stars Wilderness and God.......2006-09-04

Nomads of the North is a film starring Lon Chaney and Betty Blythe as lovers in the wilds of Canada. Blythe is wanted by another man, a wealthy man who is willing to forgive her family's debts, but her love for Chaney keeps her loyal. The wealthy man cons another into claiming Blythe's love is dead, causing her to accept his proposal. In the nick of time, though, Chaney arrives with his pet puppy and baby bear, taking Blythe away from deciet. However, he accidentally kills a man in a fight and is a wanted criminal. The two lovers cannot be separated for long, and they soon become fugitives of the law.

This film is interesting but not amazing. One of the bright spots of the film are the adorable baby animals, especially the bear which is unusual to see in films. Unfortunately, the back of the case claims that the film is taken from a gorgeous nitrate negative, but it has not been restored and is covered in artifacts and scratches.

The Shock is the better of the two films. It features a gangster (Lon Chaney) who goes to a small town in order to threaten a man who is being blackmailed by his female boss. When he is there, however, he finds that this man's daughter is nothing but good. She helps him to find God and gives him a reason to want to live. Although he falls in love with her, she is engaged to another man, but Chaney stays by her side and wishes her the best. All comes falling down though when he gets his orders from his crime boss to act on his assignment.

This film is short but gripping appropriately fleshed out. Chaney is heartbreaking and carries the film nicely.

4 out of 5 stars Two great films with a great actor!.......2004-06-29

These two excellent films from the early 1920s feature Lon Chaney without any disguises or make-up, but still as impressive as in his more famous roles such as the Phantom of the Opera. In both of these films his acting is very expressive, and in "The Shock" he is extremely convincing as a cripple in a wheelchair and the crook who turns good.

"Nomads of the North" has many lovely scenes of the Canadian wilderness and for animal lovers there are several nice scenes of a cute bear cub playing with a puppy who are Chaney's two companions in the wilderness. In the midst of this nice scenery, a rather complicated situation develops when he is wanted for the accidental death of a man, and his beloved Nanette helps him escape to a life on the run together. It has a few moments of suspense as he is almost caught and you keep hoping he won't be, and although the ending might be predictable to some, it's still very rewarding viewing.

The second film, "The Shock" is my favourite, mainly due to more suspense and twists and turns, as well as Chaney's excellent portrayal of a cripple working for an underworld "queen" in Chinatown whom he later disobeys. His life is changed by Gertrude, the woman he falls in love with, and he determines to change the outcome of the underworld queen's plans. There is a surprising dramatic climax at the end, and although it's only a short film of just over an hour, it feels like you've watched quite a dramatic epic.

Both films are digitally mastered and the picture quality is very good throughout, and the music is by Robert Israel. I found it especially good in "Nomads of the North", to which Israel plays a Fotoplayer - an instrument created to accompany silent films - and it includes various sounds for special effects. "The Shock" has the more standard, but also very good, orchestral musical score. I've really enjoyed both these films, both on their own and because of Lon Chaney, and recommend them to anyone who enjoys a quality silent film.
