5 out of 5 stars I love this movie.......2007-06-01

A family escapes from Hungray in the early 1960s. They move to America but they have to leave their baby girl Susannah behind. Susannah grows up in Hungray with another family, thinking they are her real parents. When she turns six years old, her grandparents come and take her away to America where her real family is waiting for her. Susannah meets her family, her parents and older sister. She likes American culture, like TV and gum and pretty dresses bought from stores and she likes learning English from her older sister Maria (who also teaches a word that's a swear word.) It's funny when Susannah says though that the food tastes like, well, see for yourself. But Susannah gets homesick and wants to return to Hungray. Her father makes a promise to her that she might be able to when she's older if she gives America a chance. She does, but then nine years later when she's a teenager she gets into a fight with her mother and begs to return to her native country. Her father agrees since he did promise her long ago she could. So Susannah returns to her home and meets the old family that raised her as a little girl. She greets them and loves being back in her old home. She thinks going back might help find herself, but after discovering a secret about her mother from her grandmother, she slowly starts to realize why her parents left the country and about the real meaning of family and home. I love the music in the movie, it's so beautiful and I like that it was set in the 1960s. An interesting time period. Scarlett Johansson is an amazing young actress and is so talented and beautiful and mature for her age. The people who play her parents are just as good. I like Nastassja Kinski because she's so such a loving mother to Scarlett, who doesn't always appreciate her because Nastassja's character tries to protect her from the world. It's the best movie ever made.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent little film.......2007-05-24

This film has it all: The Cold war, American family life in the 50s/60s, and the heart breaking emotion of the love of two different families towards the same child. The child grows up very confused in America, and the rest I will not spoil for you. This movie will be enjoyed by females a little more than males... except maybe mature males that can see the tribulations involved because they too have experienced something similar. It's a great movie for the entire family however, and so I recommended it highly.

4 out of 5 stars DREAM VERSUS NOSTALGIA.......2007-04-22

Hungarian born Eva Gardos wrote and directed AN AMERICAN RHAPSODY, her first movie, at the age of 50. The film is about events of her own life and she dedicated it to her father and mother. I don't have to be a psychologist to assume that Eva Gardos waited her whole life to have an opportunity to express the sufferings hidden in her heart.

What I liked the most about this film is the way the director parallels the American dream lived by the little Zsuzsi's parents and Zsuzsi's nostalgia of the Hungarian lost paradise. Such a situation is not very often described in movies. It's more politically correct to show to the audience the successful enculturation of the second generation of a migrant family and the nostalgia of the parents or even their decision to return to their homeland as in Arthur Penn's Four Friends for instance, than a child's resistance to the American dream.

The performances of Nastassja Kinski, Scarlett Johansson and the little Raffaella Bánsági as Zsuzsi are praiseworthy and the direction of Eva Gardos always bashful and discreetly elegant.

A DVD zone paradise lost.

3 out of 5 stars The Joyless Luck Club .......2007-04-10

This is one dreary film. Margit and Peter Sandor abruptly decide to flee Communist Hungary in 1950, and in doing so leave behind their infant daughter, Zsuzsi. Their plan to reunite with her in the United States becomes complicated and Zsuzsi consequently remains in Hungary. She lives with Jeno (Balazs Galko) and Teri (Zsuzsa Czinoczi), a childless couple she believes to be her parents. Margit (Nastassja Kinksi) and Peter (Tony Goldwyn), who had initially taken their older daughter, Maria, send for Zsuzsi after five years to join them in Los Angeles. Life in 1955 LA is far removed from life in 1955 rural Hungary, and little Zsuzsi has a difficult time adjusting. Discover her fate by watching the remainder of this film. While nostalgic and well-acted, this film offers very little joy as a reward for watching. It begins with the depressing prospect of two parents leaving behind one of their two children and does not brighten at all for the duration. Scenes that should bring optimism, such as the reunification of the Sandor family, are wrought with such a sense of imminent gloom that the viewer is left with an uneasy feeling. First-time director, Eva Gardos, does a very good job with the sentimental and dramatic aspects of her story. I would rather, however, she had been less heavy-handed and had more fun with the lighter episodes. This could have been a fantastic film, yet emerges as merely good. A final note: Those expecting to see Scarlett Johansson should be forewarned that she does not appear until an hour into the film.

5 out of 5 stars What a great movie!.......2007-03-13

My father left Hungary after WWII and I can identify with the struggles of this family. He left his entire family behind and we never were able to get them out. However, last month I went to Hungary and met the family for the first time. This movie reminds me both of the dreams and the reality of having a divided family, and will make anyone shed a few tears dreaming of better days.
