Description

Two men, voluntarily hibernated, are awakened 50 years later to learn that their world doesn't exist anymore. Nuclear war destroyed all the Earth's vegetation, men were exterminated and women are ruling from the underground. Facing harsh treatment from their female guards, they will do anything to save themselves and to reestablish the male population. This movie has a lot of nudity. Two friends awaken 50 years after they were frozen cryogenically in a hibernation experiment to discover they are the only two men left on earth. While the pair were asleep, a special nuclear bomb had destroyed all other human males. Women, who dress in transparent plastic, now control the world, and they graciously allow the two men to stay as long as they rid themselves of their "manhood." Unwilling to accept those terms, the pair escape, which sets off a series of wild escapades in the new world order.

I just watched this film with my dad, and i think it is a classic, it reminded me of a national lampoons movie, the two main actors reminded me of chevy chase and dan akroyd in that spy movie they were in. i dont remember a dull moment, simply hilarious, we watched a version on a old tape, so i cant wait to get a copy of it on DvD.

"Seksmisja" is practically a classic in Polish cinema. Although it is known to be a comedy, it is also science fiction. Made in 1984, Seksmisja is not one of your loaded with special effects films. It has relatively simple sets and effects that might resemble the original Star Trek, but this does add a unique flavor to the humor. Seeing women on rollerskates and using slides to get around in a futuristic world is amusing.

The story is about two men who are cytogenetically frozen and wake up in a strange world. It is an underground city in a post World War III world. But even more shocking is that there are no men. The two men are now captives in a world of women.

I have nothing but high praise for this movie and ranks among one of my favorite Polish films I ever watched. It so ingeniously blends an interesting story with humor that will make you laugh as well as think on some of the political commentary mixed into the story on the dangers of radical feminism. To top it off, most of the women in this world are nice to look at making it difficult to ask for anything more.

THE Polish movie.......2005-08-31

This is the holy grail of Polish cinema. talk to any Polish person and Sex Misje is the movie they will laugh and shout about! There is a reason and for the extra enthusiasm, this movie is best watched with a Polish companion, who can provide intermittent bits of trivia.

This movie, is not only superbly funny, the acting and the direction are superb. Of course, this is not the usual blonde or college flick comedy and it would never please fans of that brand of comedy. This is a serious, good hearted, superbly simple movie and its best seen through the Communist\Polish lens of a long long time ago.

A big dissapointment.......2005-06-11

I wouldn't mind Sexmission's sexist conservative message, if the film would have been better made. The script is idiotic, the acting horrible, the art direction clumsy, the camerawork plain ugly and the sound amateuristic and crappy.
Even that I could stand if it was funny. But the jokes are lame and childish. Not a recommendation.

One of the best Machulski comedies!.......2005-03-18

This is a very watchable film for westerners. Most of the comedy is timeless (poking fun at women's lib and the gender wars) but there's also a lot to observe in the background such as Polish culture and 1970/80's sci-fi effects and fashion. Much of the filming was done at the famous Wieliczka salt mine. There's a big deal made about the nudity but it's mostly casual and there's no sex either. Imagine Benny Hill meeting Dark Star.

...People didn't REALLY give this dreck positive reviews, did they? It's a joke, right?

I watch a lot of movies, and I'm very forgiving of the bad and middle-of-the-road ones. But this tested even my patience. What a horrible waste of film, time, and talent!

I'm glad the "Plot Synopsis" above listed this as a "romantic comedy". I kind of thought it was supposed to be funny, judging by some of the music that accompanied some scenes, but I wasn't sure. There were no laughs, no giggles, not even any slight smiles elicited by this. The only time I reacted was when my jaw dropped in amazement of how bad this movie was! It is only 88 minutes long, but they were the longest 88 minutes of my life!

Bad acting, unbelievable plot and characters, and boring direction add up to...a lot of nothing.

If people watch this kind of stuff just to see Kari Wuhrer's assets, as appears to be the case, well, that is just sad.

I was waiting for this DVD to come out because I loved this movie when it first came out. I rented it from a video store a few years back and really enjoyed it. Well acted. Good premise. Not to mention, Kari Wuhrer is hotter than ever.

Yet, the DVD is a huge disappointment. It's edited! The video tape I rented was an unedited unrated version. THIS DVD IS NOT! It's the R-rated version.

Otherwise, I would have given it 4 stars! I'll never understand why they edit these movies? Ruins them.

Sex seems to be the only criterion for the MPAA to give out NC-17 and decline ratings. Yet, violence has no limit.

Extraordinary bleak take on dark and yearning co-dependency. Wonderfully written and expertly directed. Highly authentic characterizations. Slovin's first feature won Ft. Lauderdale's Golden Palm Award (Ft. Lauderdale Film Festival), and will surely be featured in retrospective repertory before 2030.

This little known gem of a film is absolutely worth watching. Great performances by Tucci, Wuhrer and Eldard. A very sexy, fun film.

An exquisite journey of discovery through Tunisian Culture.......2004-01-02

MAN OF ASHES / Tunisia 1986 (4 STARS)
14 December 2003: It isn't everyday that one comes across a film from Tunisia, but one that so deftly treats a sensitive subject and so adroitly displays all the element of subtle film-making is a greater rarety. Man of Ashes is indeed a brazen effort for Nouri Bouzid, who needs to be applauded for so bravely confronting a sensitive subject within an Islamic society, while proudly presenting to the world intricate and ceremonious details about his culture.
* Mise-en-scene: I enjoyed the ceremonious and culturally exquisite staging of the wedding. I found several parallels that could be drawn between Tunisian culture and others that I am familiar with, and it was gratifying for me to note the bonds that unify us across culture and geography.
* I would have liked to see more of a progression in the relationship between father and son, which very quickly degenerated into as shouting match and then stayed. It would have been interesting to explore the father's motivations and understand his shouting within that context.
* I had mixed feelings about the figure behavior of the two leads because of their excesses in both directions. I personally thought that the protagonist over-did the withdrawal through trauma and his friend was way over the top with his expression of grief. But then these reactions are culture specific and who can pass judgment on the various ways in which people are prone to behaving in adverse circumstances.
* I also thought that the friend's not going all the way and exploring his homosexual side was a missed opportunity.
* The cinematography was surprisingly polished and subtle, and showed an acute sensibility both in the use of camera lenses which were used with great panache to alternate between objective narration and psychologically subjective exploration through tight close-ups, and in the choice of color palette which was diffused and earthy, yet rich with the texture and hues of Tunisian culture.

From Nouri Bouzid comes this tale of a man soon to marry struggling with childhood memories of sexual involvement with his mentor. His best friend, who shares the same experiences, deals with his past in asocial ways. Our hero becomes depressed and fears he will not be able to perform as a man with his bride. Flashbacks fill us in about the exact nature of the trauma and place the boys at about ten years of age. Think of a mix between Nattlek and The Boys of St. Vincent. A Cannes winner.

One of the best K-Drama's I've Seen.......2007-02-16

What Planet Are You From is one of the funnier K-dramas. I've been waiting for this one to come out on DVD since last year. The only thing that's somewhat confusing is that they used the same actress for both sisters, so i wasn't sure which one he was dating. Other than that, I thought the show was awesome. It has a good ending, unlike some other shows which have a bitter-sweet or disappointing ending. What Planet Are You From, Glass Slipper, and My Lovely Sam Soon are my top three K-Dramas, in that order;)
