Herman Raucher's autobiographical (or first person, anyway) coming-of-age tale is set, as the title suggests, among sand dunes and departing GIs. Hermie (Gary Grimes) and his two buddies Oscar (Jerry Hauser) and the nerdy Benjie (Oliver Conant) are spending the summer doing the things preadolescents do: hanging out, eating ice cream, stealing "dirty" books from their parents, and trying unsuccessfully to act manly around the gawky girls they take to the movies. Then Hermie spoils everything by really falling in love, this time with the adorable older woman Dorothy, played by Jennifer O'Neill. Dorothy's husband conveniently leaves for duty overseas, and then, even more conveniently, becomes one of those "we regret" telegrams. Dorothy, desperate for comfort and sweetness, turns to Hermie--and surely makes his summer. The setting and the date give this movie a double helping of nostalgia for anyone who was once an adolescent boy desperately trying to get rid of both his callowness and his virginity. But the slow pace and dreamy atmosphere, courtesy of Robert Mulligan's direction and Michael Legrand's famous score, may give it less appeal to anyone who is still in that situation. --Richard Farr

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Definitely in the top 100 of all time.......2007-03-21

I first saw this movie in 1977 when I was 16 years old. It had come out a few years earlier and had a revival at a theatre in Manhattan. I went to see it on a Saturday, stayed for a second time. Went back the next Saturday and saw it again, then the next Saturday. Then it left and I was heartbroken until the VCR came into being!!!

It is a classic love story, touching, warm, passionate, just 3 guys hanging out in Nantucket for the summer. I can relate, I did it on Long Island at that age. They perfectly set up what the young mind goes through. When jennifer o'neil appeared many a young boys hearts fluttered--man she was gorgeous. The muscial score sets the tone for the entire movie. It's absolutely beautiful and will stay with you long after you have seen the film.

This is a movie that most likely wouldn't be made today. There are no more classics like this. Movies today involve violence, car chases, explosions and are geared for 18 year olds. A soft warm story such as this just wouldnt be made and thats sad----the classics are becoming fewer and fewer and only the magic of DVD's and video preserves these classics.

I can understand where people write about the double standard. This movie shows relations between a 15-16 year old boy and a 25 year old woman. But somehow its not bothersome---its done so tastefully and is not the crux of the story. If it was reversed, they are right, there would have been an uproar so there is a double standard. But just buy this or rent it and be mesmerized. A masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Very Moving.......2007-01-23

Summer of 42, one of the little jewels of the Golden 70's, Robert Mulligan, a veteran Director (The Rain Must Fall and This Time Next Year) hits pay dirt with a wistful coming of age story during early WW2. The obsession of our 15-year-old boy is Jennifer O'Neill. O'Neil says goodbye on a New England island beach as her husband goes off to war. The boys, Gary Grimes, and friends see her across the sand dunes as a sex object. This reminded me very much of a far more complex film by Giuseppe Tornatore, Melina, which is fairly recent, an Italian knockout abandoned by her army husband. In Melina and the earlier Paridisio, the sexuality of young teens is the topic of wistful nostalgia.

Filmed in 1971, this island is fine for 1940's beach houses, so add a few 1930's cars and bobby soxer clothing and we have a lovely recreation. The boys want to do it, calculating whether their Saturday night date will allow further experimentation. Grimes, a handsome, but naive teen has been hanging around, doing odd jobs for O'Neill. He is quite stimulated while she pines for her serviceman. Then a tragedy throws O'Neil and Grimes into a desperate tryst. It's very moving actually. This is a wonderful film of an earlier era.

5 out of 5 stars An Unforgettable Coming of Age Movie.......2007-01-11

I first saw this when I was barely 12. Now, nearly three decades later, having seen it again, the movie has lost none of its sense of wonder and pathos. Jennifer O'Neil has to be one of the most sultry women ever to have graced the screen in the 70s. Her beauty and sex appeal are more evident than ever in this decently remastered DVD. The melancholic love theme will resonate long after the movie's over. And the 2 main characters, who live on the fringes of mainstream society, start a romance that just cannot be sustained. His a teenager and she's a married woman. Their parting is always imminent. But knowing that midway through the movie does nothing to diminish its watchability. In fact, that makes it even more rivetting. This movie does not pale in comparison to Casablanca. At times, it's even better than that well-known Bogart classic. It's really about 2 very lonely souls who find comfort in each other's arms. A more recent treatment of this theme is found in Sofia Coppola's equally admirable Oscar-winner, Lost in Translation. But in Summer of '42, lies something more deeply rewarding for the audience who's watching it today. There is an all-consuming nostalgia that envelopes you because this is a highly original love story that came from a time when innocence and sexuality could blend together with a sweet, melancholic afterglow. One of the best romantic movies ever made. You can watch it over and over again. Unforgettable.

4 out of 5 stars Unforgettable, Cherished Summer of 42.......2006-10-30

I just had to get this movie just so I could remember it from when I first saw it at the movies in the early 70s and to see the similarites from the movie The Inkwell (1994). Even my youngest daughter noticed the similarities watching it by herself. The only differences are; when the setting took place in the summer of 1942 from 1976, Nantucket Island from Martha's Vineyard, not white but African American. Both young teen males lost their virginity to older married woman, Summer of 42 she lost her husband in the war; The Inkwell, the husband was cheating on her, both women are sad and found comfort in these young men. The Inkwell being a little more funnier, Summer of 42 was still GOOD, SAD and SWEET (like another person puts it)and had some funny scenes too. Like Hermie going to the Drug Store trying to buy condoms (rubbers, hahah!!) and Oscy (Hermie's best friend)trying desperately to get his 1st lay and trying to follow instructions from a Medical book on foreplay leading to sex and exceeding it...haha!! Also Summer of 42 the possibilites of that happening to a normal young man was more realistic. In The Inkwell Lorenz Tate's character was a too weird and awkward teenage boy almost like Benji, Hermie's other best friend who was just too shy to be with girls his own age. But in the end that's something Hermie will never forget and will cherish for the rest of his life.

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Rites of Passage" is a provocative look at family conflict. Not exactly a gay movie, it does have a gay sub-plot and deals with coming-out issues and the struggles between sons and sons and sons and fathers. Filled with conflict, plot twists and turns, deception, secrets and excess baggage, we watch as a father and his two sons come to terms with themselves and each other. The director, Victor Salva, handles everything with sensitivity and a great deal of meaning. For whatever reason, the conflict between father and son will hit home to most of us and watching it makes us remember that painful time when we had to come to terms with whom we are.
Del (Dean Stockwell) is the father who has to deal with the mistakes he has made with his gay son, Campbell (Jason Behr). Past goings-on are revealed via flashbacks and through them we learn that Del is very tough man's man who once saw his son hugging and kissing another man. As the father and his two sons are at a hunting cabin, a psychopathic killer and escaped convict and his pal are hiding out in the area near to where they are. As the plot goes through twists and turns, secrets are exposed and we begin to look at the characters quite differently.
The setting for the film is beautiful and the actors are good looking in this character driven thriller which exposes family issues between a father and his two sons. Del is going through mid-life crisis and is having an extra-marital affair, one son is gay and the other has become part of suburban mediocrity. All of the drama takes place on one night and as we watch we see the men tear each other down with a great deal of tension and truth. The movie keeps you guessing all the way to the end. There are character revelations that constantly crop up and this is a painful movie to watch and there is a great deal of suspense here.
The theme is not new--the estrangement between a father and his gay son. But this is only part of complex issues that are revealed. We do not deal with sexuality in the movie but we do deal with relationships. Campbell has been hurt by the abuse that he has received for being gay and needed to express himself combatively. Growing up gay in a straight society, living in an all-American family made his life a living hell. He tried to conform but failed. His father tried to "straighten" him out and when he was a young adult. His dad beat him after finding him with his boyfriend.
What I love about this film is that it is so unusual. The treatment of the relationships between gay men and their families is dealt with in a sympathetic way and with complete realism. Jason Behr as Campbell portrays a tormented and courageous character that despite all of the abuse he has endured refuses to lose his humanity and emerges as the most positive person in the film. The ending of the film is extremely emotional. Each of the men has a story to tell but it is the gay son's story that ties the entire movie together.
The screenplay is intelligent and very skillful. This is a movie that is filled with integrity and acted brilliantly. As you are drawn in, you realize that you are watching a film that deals with love in all of its forms and deep personal crises, about illusions and betrayals, and about forgiveness and new beginnings. As we look at family values among the three men in the movie, we begin to understand desire and relationships.

4 out of 5 stars Good independent film.......2007-01-09

thoughtful and provocative. More than I expected and some good performances and plot. I bought it on the strength of wanting to see something more recent by Jason Behr than Roswell. He does a great job. I also like Dean Stockwell's performance and the "villan" (forgot name, sorry), who do excellent jobs. It is great to see a good film that is not a big hollywood budget type, but not plodding like some trying to send a big message about something. I liked the commentary that highlighted some good points about the performances and issues.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive story-telling.......2006-11-19

This film somehow managed to escape my attention until now. I rented it with modest expectations, but I was glued to the screen.

Perhaps there are some imperfections in this little gem, but the minor flaws are far outweighed by a great cast, fast pacing, you'll-never-guess-what-happens-next story telling, and drama in spades.

Now drama can get old fast, but this film works. If you're uncomfortable with gay sub-plots, this film probably isn't for you; there are several, and they're key to the story. But If you're okay with coming-out issues, struggles between sons and sons and fathers, and a considerable amount of bloodshed, I'd check this out.

There's enough drama, conflict, deception, plot twists, secrets, and baggage here to fill a week of soap operas, but it's served up here sensitively and with some meaning. Highly recommended. Check it out.

2 out of 5 stars VERY weird thriller..........2006-08-13

And not because it involves a gay love story!

Jason Behr plays Campbell,a boy disowned by his lawyer father (Dean Stockwell)when he's caught in the act with another man. There are numerous flashbacks--which would have been powerful if the script were stronger.

Escaped convicts, hidden $$$,and so on get tangled into the plot.Campbell, his father&estranged brother get taken hostage--and just when you think it'll get suspenseful,it ends up getting VERY VERY VERY talky. It seems the screenwriter wasn't sure if this was going to be a thriller or a "coming out" movie. It makes for weird, kinda boring, early morning viewing...

4 out of 5 stars The eternal parent/child conflict........2006-04-09

For whatever reason we each might have, the conflict between father and sons in this movie will resonate with most of us. I'm not a fan of violence, so that part of this was a little hard to take, but the childhood flashbacks and the lack of communication between parent and child I could easily relate to. Anyway, it's well done, and the final scene is so touching it might even make you cry.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars stupid.......2007-01-04

this movie was SOOO stupid! i couldn't even get through all of it because it was that dumb! but i DID watch most of it so you can't say, "oh, you don't know what its like cos you didn't watch it all." so what?! i had had enough! it was supposed to be a horror movie but it wasn't terrifying at all. most of the blood and stuff looked really fake and during many parts i asked myself, "is this horror or comedy??" but maybe you will like it. i don't know. maybe, 1)i'm not one for vampire films, or maybe 2)this really IS a stupid movie. i would have to say the answer is probably 2. but this is only my opinion. and i think this movie is pretty cheesy.

3 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT THAT BAD...REALLY.......2005-01-19

Come now...How can you not like a horror movie which features the talents of Karen Black, Ami Dolenz, Peter DeLuise, and Garret Morris? Well I suppose you can hate it but I actually thought it wasn't that bad and had one very genuinely creepy scene.

Set in a small town called Allburg, two girls Lucy (Dolenz) and Cindy (Maya McLaughlin) visit an old abandoned church. A creepy looking old gothic cathedral. The legend goes that you can actuall swim in an old crypt beneath the church so the girls give it a try. Well, Cindy loses her crucifix as it floats to the bottom of the crypt and awakens a vampire from his sleep and he immediately kills her while Lucy escapes.

Meanwhile a former priest (DeLuise) has heard the legends of the vampires and comes to Allburg to invesigate and runs into Lucy as she is escaping from the vampire. The pair along with the town drunk, (Garret Morris) have to find a way from stopping the vampire from spreading is bite as already dozens of townspeople have been turned into vampires themselves. One of those, played by Karen Black, is imprisoned in the house of another priest who she constantly torments with her taunts and screams.

The acting is nothig to write home about. Black and Morris are both way over the top, but in kind of a fun and b-movie way. The scene in the old gothic church was quite creepy although why ANYONE would ever want to go swim in a mold invested crypt is beyone me. For a change the vampire isn't some sauve, GQ pretty boy but a rather decrepit, pasty faced, demonic looking thing.

Children of the night was no classic but you could do much worse.

5 out of 5 stars Awesomely Bad!.......2004-09-30

A vapire flick that is worth seeing more than once about a small town being overrun by vampires and the humans who are left standing are in the fight of their lives. But in the end good triumphs over evil and the story ends yet doesn't.

4 out of 5 stars BAD DVD.......2004-09-10

I LOVE this film. I am a karen Black Fanatic and had to have it even though the dvd is grainy looking and presented in "fullscreen" ONLY! The story and film itself is creepy and a good dose of old school vampire horror film making but the transfer here is ULTRA sloppy and just plain sad!

Too bad Anchor Bay or Blue Underground didnt get a hold of this good vampire flick! I heap this in the pile with other Great Vamp films like "Lost Boys" and "Near Dark" it has dark humor and good old fashioned creepiness!

I give the film a 4 star rating, the dvd a 2

The quietly devastating Maya begins with the statement, "Based on true practices." Not until the very end will those practices, which still take place in certain remote parts of India, be revealed. Until that time, Digvijay Singh's deceptively bucolic debut takes a quasi-documentary approach to the rural summer of 12-year-old Maya (wide-eyed Nitya Shetty) as she and cousin Sanjay (Nikhil Yadav) play in the sun, sneak candy, and drink warm milk. But then Maya "becomes a woman" and her family starts making preparations for her "prayer ceremony." Things seems normal enough, although Maya is never told what this ceremony entails and why it is so important. Although the disturbing centerpiece of her initiation into adulthood is more suggested than shown, the point is as clear as it is heartbreaking. It represents, quite simply, the brutal and irrevocable destruction of one girl's innocence. For this reason, the film is recommended for adult viewers, despite the young age of its central character. Maya is a complex and shattering film. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

For 12year old Maya, life is very simple in her village in rural India. From innocent pranks to small adventures in the nearby forest, she spends most of her time with her 11 year old cousin, Sanjay. However, their fraternal love is soon shattered when Maya's journey to be coming a woman results in her being the victim of anancient and brutal ritual, tragically ending her childhood innocence and leaving her scarred for life. Visually stunning and emotionally stirring, Maya reveals the devastating consequences of a traumatic ritual, though forbidden, that still occurs in parts of India today. **Please note that the film contains graphic sexual situations.**

4 out of 5 stars Child abuse in the name of religion.......2006-07-28

It's about a 13 year old girl who goes through ritualized rape that is part of a "prayer ceremony" that is part of a Hindu sect. Perhaps sect is the wrong word since I'm using Western term but I'm sure the Hindu religion is more fragmented than Christianity. And I'm sure some Hindus are dismayed by this barbaric practice.

It was obvious that the people who made this movie is trying to end this in India. It's well done and you don't see anything graphic, it's implied. During most of the movie the children are just being children. I recommend this to people to see the dark side of religion.

4 out of 5 stars A good film that makes you think.......2006-01-24

There are some things that have to be put to the light of day in order to destory it. This story about a young spirited girl who found that life can be very cruel and that even betrayal can come from those that are suppose to protect you always from the dark shadows. This little girl whose only hero was her cousin was forced into an outdated and outlawed tradition. CSI and Law and Order is more detailed in what bad things can happened to children. Every cultural has it's shame hidden among it's beauty. One of the reviews beg to keep this film hidden. I hope that they will reconsider and not hide away this ugly stain but to expose it so that young girls like "Maya" will not have to endure the enforced rape that is consented by parents as an "honorable" ritual. As an American, I didn't know about this ritual and actually searched for information on it. I understand better even though it sickens me that something can happen like this.

1 out of 5 stars Please don't buy this movie.......2005-09-30

I picked up this movie and was horrified to find out that the movie isbased on a rape of a little girl that the parents knowingly take their daughter to. My first thoughts were that I have never been more ashamed to be an Indian as well as a Hindu. I found this movie to be down right appalling. Please don't waste your time. As for the music, there are at most 2 horrible songs and the film used is cheap. The beautiful scenes are not what India is known for. I just hope that I have shed some light on how disgusting this movie really is. Yes it may highlight how evil people in power especially when it comes to religion may be, but to sit down and watch almost 2 hours of this movie can make almost anyone gag. If your up for a good Indian movie watch something by director Mira Nair.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful cinematography contrasts brutal message.......2005-02-12

The first thing that struck me about the film "Maya" was the beautiful cinematography. Sweeping shots of the Indian landscape, touching moments between children and family, brilliant colors, close-up's of lizards (I'm guessing they mean something in Indian culture that I am not aware of.): all these contributed to the overall asthetic appeal of the film. However, the visual beauty of the film provided a stark contrast to the actual message behind the images. This movie is about brutal sexual practices affecting young girls in some parts of India. The entire film builds up to a horrific scene at the end that is almost unbearable to watch despite the fact that nothing incredibly graphic is shown. This film not only raises awareness of these brutal practices but does so in the most effective of ways. "Maya" provides an extremely important message, and it also is an achievement in cinematic production. I thought this film was extremely well done, and it has taught me even more about practices such as these that still exist in a world outside mine.

3 out of 5 stars Beware of the Digiview edition of "Rites of Passage".......2007-06-25

This is a fine film however, the Digiview Entertainment DVD edition is the version that has been edited for broadcast television. Full screen with the profanity blanked out. I'm not very disappointed since I only paid a $1 for this DVD at Walmart. The story of the film is very engaging but, feels very closterphobic like a filmed stage play. All in all not a bad deal considering what you usually find in the dollar DVD bin. Good quality picture (compared to other bargain DVDs) just not the version of "Rites of Passage" available on other DVD editions. If you're a fan of the film and want to own it on DVD this is not the edition to purchase.

"Rites of Passage"

Owning Up

2 out of 5 stars too many holes in the plot ...left me totally unsatisfied.......2005-09-09

This movie asks the viewer never to question anything, just accept the story as it is told...but I can not do this. Dominic around 14 and his older brother anywhere from 19 to 27 live a carefree life. Father is dead and mother is off to Africa. Patrick has no visible job, but they have money...from where no one bothers to ask. Dominic does not go to school, and no adult really presses the issue. I guess Ireland does not have mandatory education and education is not any priority to anyone, including the mother when she does finally shows up. Anya a girl from Germany shows up....I guess she is a relative of the aunt...does not explain how an Irish aunt has a German niece and there is no hint of a german accent. Anya is suppose to be in college but she looks more like 14...I guess this was done to make it more believable that a college age girl will be torn between a 14 year old and his adult brother. She comes across more as a slut than a belivable girl in love with two. Anyways the mother returns to Ireland, so the boys go to Dublin. Anya just happens to have a friend who just happens to have a flat that he is willing to let them have for free. Patrick just happens to find a job selling religious articles is a small shop with two gay? men. And of course that is going to pay so well that he is able to feed the three of them and provide them with booze. Sorry, but I am going to cut to the end: Anya decides to go back to Germany I guess because she can not handle being in love with two (personally, I think she is going to find new lovers). Dominic runs off to sea at his age. Guess Ireland has no child labor laws either. Patrick goes back to the store, and the mom is okeedokee with all of this....yeah right.

5 out of 5 stars Moondance ........2004-07-15

I have to confess to buying this DVD as a result of my interest in the music of Van Morrison. I was delighted and enthralled not knowing what to expect. The music is beautiful many of Vans famous songs sung by an equally talented Brian Kennedy. But the acting and story line was simply fabulous. The appeaance of Marianne Faithful is a treasure and the blend of story acting and music make this film unmissable. Buy it and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars ACADEMY AWARD WINNING.......2004-01-21

As a fan of Marianne Faithfull you too will be beleiving that Marianne has adopted you into her family. The "MOONDANCE" is truly a treasure and a magical reality check. Marianne's perormance left me unable to determine if she is acting or truly a genius, the second is an obvious. This film is too "cool" to be mainstream in the "good "old" U.S." The masses wouldn't get it.... I did... Thank you again Marianne Faithfull

BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed, a delightful film.......1998-06-17

This recently released film is a beautiful story about Patrick and Dominic, two brothers living an unusually independent life on a delapidated country estate in western Ireland. Their lives are changed when Anya comes to stay, propelling both of them into a new understanding of themselves, their world and one another.

The cinematography in this film is outstanding and the acting sensitive and evocative. Ruaidhri Conroy, who has appeared in a number of Irish films, gives a particularly touching performance in the role of Patrick's younger brother Dominic, who undergoes a right of passage as the story unfolds.

Marrianne Faithful puts in a rare appearance as the boys' estranged mother.

All in all an outstanding film, with an outstanding cast. I highly recommend it!
