The riveting subject of Downfall is nothing less than the disintegration of Adolf Hitler in mind, body, and soul. A 2005 Academy Award nominee for best foreign language film, this German historical drama stars Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire) as Hitler, whose psychic meltdown is depicted in sobering detail, suggesting a fallen, pathetic dictator on the verge on insanity, resorting to suicide (along with Eva Braun and Joseph and Magda Goebbels) as his Nazi empire burns amidst chaos in mid-1945. While staging most of the film in the claustrophobic bunker where Hitler spent his final days, director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Das Experiment) dares to show the gentler human side of der Fuehrer, as opposed to the pure embodiment of evil so familiar from many other Nazi-era dramas. This balanced portrayal does not inspire sympathy, however: We simply see the complexity of Hitler's character in the greater context of his inevitable downfall, and a more realistic (and therefore more horrifying) biographical portrait of madness on both epic and intimate scales. By ending with a chilling clip from the 2002 documentary Blind Spot: Hitler's Secretary, this unforgettable film gains another dimension of sobering authenticity. --Jeff Shannon

Some good history for those who haven't heard it before. Some great acting for everyone. Well worth your time. Some echoes for our time. "They gave us a mandate... "
Downfall.......2007-05-30
a poor actor showing the world how anybody, driven by hate, will go down in history in the worst way.
absolutely mesmerizing potrayal by Bruno Gantz.......2007-05-28
I had no idea Ganz had it in him to be this great until I saw him here as Hitler. Alexandra Maria Lara as his young and naive secretary is also very good. Cast is excellent. Director Oliver Hirschbieger deftly pulls it all together and will keep you on the edge of your seat all the way through--even though we all know how the tale ended.
The film gets under your skin and gnaws at your psyche long after you have seen it--and that is some trick. How were the makers of this motion picture able to accomplish this? By avoiding the usual approach of making Hitler and his murderous SS thugs as two-dimensional cartoon characters, instead they show the lot of them to be what they were: human. Mixed-up, misguided, fanatical, barberic, coldblooded mass-murderers--and all in the quest for power (that they never attained), but human none-the-less.
What is sad here, as far as I am concerned, instead of encouraging his nation to focus all that energy on making the world a better place, because Germans, the German people, have given us so much more than fine cars and excellent beer and camera lenses...Hitler and his thugs had their people squandering all that potential on causing destruction and mayhem, misery and pain...for nothing.
I realize quite a few Germans didn't care for Hitler and his loony notions...only there wasn't much they could do about it (once he came into power and they saw where he was actually taking them...straight to Hell). Any German who opposed the dreaded SS and the Gestapo ended up dead or in some camp somewhere to suffer the consequences.
I always wondered what it must have been like for Hitler and his people down in that bunker during the final months/weeks/days... This powerful motion picture shows you what went on--and then some.
For History Buffs and Cinephiles.......2007-05-15
Incredible cinematography. Bruno Ganz is exceptional as the lead character. Very intricate portrayal of the last days of the Third Reich. Enables the viewer to see an interesting side of [...] that hasn't been explored very often.
good history, good movie.......2007-05-12
I am a college history professor. One of my students had this movie and asked me if I would view it and let him know how accurate it was etc. I viewed it and was very impressed. So impressed I bought one for myself. This is very accurate history as well as well done movie making. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the last days of WWII in Europe.

Unavailable at all for nearly three decades, then issued in a VHS edition in 1996, the Rolling Stones' legendary Rock and Roll Circus finally gets the full treatment with this DVD release documenting the 1968 event. The Stones were reportedly unhappy with their performance (hence the long delay), and it isn't their finest moment; performing "Jumping Jack Flash" and a variety of songs from their then-new Beggars Banquet album, Keith Richards is game, but Jagger's preening (especially on "Sympathy for the Devil") is over the top, and guitarist Brian Jones looks dissolute and well on his way to his death the following year. A certain weirdness permeates some of the other musical acts as well: Jethro Tull lip-syncs unconvincingly, Taj Mahal and band were obliged to perform before the circus set was completed and the audience had arrived, and John Lennon's outing with impromptu supergroup the Dirty Mac (with Richards, Eric Clapton, and drummer Mitch Mitchell) is hampered by Yoko Ono's caterwauling, although their version of the Beatles' "Yer Blues" is cool. Still, the Who are brilliant, Marianne Faithfull is beautiful, the various circus acts are fun, and the crowd clearly loves it.
The DVD comes with some fascinating bonus features, including three extra songs by Mahal, some lovely classical piano by Julius Katchen, and a "quad split-screen" version of "Yer Blues." Best of all are a new interview with the Who's Pete Townshend and the various commentary tracks added for the DVD--especially those by Tull's Ian Anderson, director Michael Lindsay-Hogg, and Stones Jagger, Richards, and Bill Wyman (who dryly attributes Jagger's reluctance to issue the show to his dissatisfaction with his own performance, not the band's). Flaws notwithstanding, this is a treat. --Sam Graham

NICE TO SEE THIS ON DVD! STONES FANS HAVE DREAMED OF SEEING THIS FOR YEARS!.......2007-06-29
Like most Stones fans, I had read about this canceled show for years. I had constructed and imagined the concert in my head many times for three decades. The DVD treatment is excellent and there are some nice extras. The DVD has extra songs that the VHS release didn't have. It is great to have it, but it didn't quite live up to my vision I had conjured in my mind all these years. It is still a great addition to any fans collection.
Rock and Roll Circus a wonderful memory of Brian Jones........2007-06-12
Move over Mick, the Rolling Stones Band was Brian Jones group in the beginning. Just like when you and Keith Richards, got rid of Mick Taylor. Far to good a guitarist for the likes of Keith Richards.
Yes, we all know what happened to Brian. Yep friends just watch there friends go down the tubes without doing anything.
Gosh does this mean that we'll see you guys still marketing yourself when your in your 70's? I hope not.
I'd rather remember you, Wyman, Keith, Charlie because he cared about Brian more than you ever could.
All of the other performers were fabulous !!!! Keith Moon before his demise. Pete in his youthful heyday ! Awesome stuff.
Wolfhouddennis from Lincoln Hills, California
Keith Moon in his prime.......2007-06-11
There is nothing more exciting than seeing Keith Moon on film, whether In "Kids are Alright" or here, where the Who steal the show from the Stones and Lennon and others with an incredible performance that captures all four of them at their peak. But particularly Moon, the greatest rock drummer of all, when he was still a beautiful maniac before his sad (and short) dissipation.
Also noteworthy for me on this video is Taj Mahal's performance. Taj had 2 albums out at this time, 1968, and was still in his 20s but sang like a Delta octagenarian. His first 2 Columbia albums are classic blues rock, and feature, like the performance here, Jesse Ed Davis on lead guitar. Jesse Ed was a native American blues-rocker who had great chops and died way too young. Also, in the spirit of this London hippie party happening, Brian Jones sits in on drums for Taj Mahal's number.
John Lennon's performance of "Yer Blues" is also phenomenal, featuring Clapton and Keith Richards on guitars and Mitch Mitchell on drums. Yoko also does a number (no comment.)
The Stones are just fine, but apparently they felt so overshadowed by some of the other performers, and it WAS their gig, that they released this on audio only until just recently. Thank you, boys, the world needed this video if only for the KEITH MOON RUSH!!!!
Great.. and greater!.......2007-06-01
All these years, I wanted to listen to it. Now I own it! The Stones were absolutely fabulous. It is so great (and sad) to see Brian Jones in his last year. If I'd only known Dirty Mac was a group composed of Lennon (Beatles), Clapton (Cream), Keith Richards (Stones) and Mitch Mitchell (Hendrix Experience) - from the top 4 groups of the time. The only disappointment was that the inspirational 'Yer Blues' was followed by 'Yer Bitch'.
Rock and Roll Circus.......2007-05-30
If you are a fan of the Stones and Beatles, you should have this. Great performances by the Stones in Particular.

Quentin Tarantino came out of nowhere (i.e., a video store in Manhattan Beach, California) and turned Hollywood on its ear in 1992 with his explosive first feature, Reservoir Dogs. Like Tarantino's mainstream breakthrough Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs has an unconventional structure, cleverly shuffling back and forth in time to reveal details about the characters, experienced criminals who know next to nothing about each other. Joe (Lawrence Tierney) has assembled them to pull off a simple heist, and has gruffly assigned them color-coded aliases (Mr. Orange, Mr. Pink, Mr. White) to conceal their identities from being known even to each other. But something has gone wrong, and the plan has blown up in their faces. One by one, the surviving robbers find their way back to their prearranged warehouse hideout. There, they try to piece together the chronology of this bloody fiasco--and to identify the traitor among them who tipped off the police. Pressure mounts, blood flows, accusations and bullets fly. In the combustible atmosphere these men are forced to confront life-and-death questions of trust, loyalty, professionalism, deception, and betrayal. As many critics have observed, it is a movie about "honor among thieves" (just as Pulp Fiction is about redemption, and Jackie Brown is about survival). Along with everything else, the movie provides a showcase for a terrific ensemble of actors: Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Steve Buscemi, Michael Madsen, Christopher Penn, and Tarantino himself, offering a fervent dissection of Madonna's "Like a Virgin" over breakfast. Reservoir Dogs is violent (though the violence is implied rather than explicit), clever, gabby, harrowing, funny, suspenseful, and even--in the end--unexpectedly moving. (Don't forget that "Super Sounds of the Seventies" soundtrack, either.) Reservoir Dogs deserves just as much acclaim and attention as its follow-up, Pulp Fiction, would receive two years later. --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
Clever carnage........2007-07-05
Quentin Tarantino uses violence and numbers ambiguity to keep us off balance in this modern gangster classic. Some may be put off by the bloodshed (it's definitely Rated-R. Watch it when the kids are away at summer camp) but it serves a purpose -- it keeps you from guessing the the identity of the police informant. The mole's identity ends up hitting you like a bullet to the solarplexis.
Film editing works deftly with the numbers game. The gang plotting the jewelry heist is shown together just for a few minutes at the beginning of the film. What follows is references to "five guys" (or is it "five OTHER guys?"). The DVD and VHS jackets show only four men. When the heist goes awry some robbers are said to have been killed or caught by the police. But then one of the "dead" shows up at the rendez-vous point. This got me thinking "OK, so how many are missing now, which ones and is one of those the informer?" In fact, Tarantino (who is one of the actors in "Reservoir Dogs") is setting us up. Things boil over when one of the organizers doesn't believe the informer's story as to how one of the gang members died.
Great picture although I'm not sure why it's called "Reservoir Dogs." I watched the movie at a time when "The Fantastic Four...Rise of The Silver Surfer" was in movie theaters nationwide. The Silver Surfer character is linked to the informer in "Reservoir Dogs." Watch Tarantino's picture and see if you can spot the linkage. Nice cosmic trick, Quentin!
Reservoir Dogs DVD 15th anniversary edition.......2007-06-08
I am very upset because I did not receive the sepecial package that I choose.
EXCELLENT DVD!.......2007-05-30
This DVD is the SPECIAL EDITION of the movie "Reservoir Dogs" that was released 15 years ago, it contains a huge amount of bonus material including various interviews with Quentin Tarantino and several other people that worked on this movie. It also comes in a special metal case that's in the shape of a gasoline tank, VERY COOL!
Reservoir dogs.......2007-05-16
Its kinda boring show. The only interesting part of the movie is constant arguing.... which the whole movie is only showing them quarreling in a warehouse. The whole movie is in the warehouse and nothing more. So its kinda boring i guess.
An intro to Pulp Fiction.......2007-05-14
This film shares many elements with Pulp Fiction. While not necessarily required to understand Pulp Fiction, it does enhance your understanding of Quentin Tarantino's style. This film may have been overshadowed by Pulp Fiction, but it still is a classic in its own right.

In this action thriller based on an early story by Stephen King, Los Angeles in the year 2017 has become a police state in the wake of the global economy's total collapse. All forms of entertainment are government controlled, and the most popular show on television is an elaborate game show in which convicted criminals are given a chance to escape by running through a gauntlet of brutal killers known as "Stalkers." Anyone who survives is given their freedom and a condominium in Hawaii, so when a wrongly accused citizen (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is chosen as a contestant, all hell breaks loose. Cheesy sets and a slimy role for game-show host Richard Dawson make this violent mess of mayhem a candidate for guilty pleasure; it is the kind of movie that truly devoted Arnold fans will want to watch more than once. And check those credits--choreography by Paula Abdul! --Jeff Shannon

Such a Hot Head.......2007-05-21
Excellent film & 6.1 ex surround sound, but passable picture quality. yeah I know it's an old film & very dated, but to state "remastered in HD" and have black spots all over the film is a let down, the soundtrack kicks and the packaging is nice plus all the classic Arnie 1 liners are here and worth the purchse price alone...
Fingers crossed if it's released on Blu-ray it will be remastered correctly...
Classic Crapola.......2007-02-21
If you like the taste of cartoons and superheros with a hint of Family Feud, then this dish is for you, otherwise, avoid this rotten pototo!
O for 6? Well, how about this one then?
The Running Man is to film making what dumpster diving is to fine dining!
Been there, done that............2007-02-05
I would have to agree with the person below. I've just finished wathing the movie "The Game" with Michael Douglas & Sean Penn, and it reminds me very much of this movie which I saw back when it first came out.
Let me state that I love Stephen King and this book when I first read it, then I heard of the movie and had to see it for myself. Like "the Game" and most movies these days it was too needlessly graphic and also like "the Game" it had a person trying to run literally for his life in what was basically a reality game show, some sort of twisted "Survivor".
It left me with an empty feeling in the end and all I could think about was the waste of $15.00 to buy the ticket. But most of all it wasn't even a plausable ending, I never did like any of the Arnie movies, perhaps with the only exception being "true lies" with Jamie Lee-Curtis. Though that said truth can be stranger than fiction. Especially in a place where a ex-actor can became both the President of America and the Governor of California.
They couldn't have known how funny this was. . ........2006-11-18
I just read an advance copy of a very funny,
comically gory novel called THE GAME. It's
about a game show that ends up being about
murder. Almost twenty years ago, in this movie,
Arnold Schwarzenegger is the guest of honor
on a game show where the contestants are hunted
down by celebrity killers and dispatched
before your very eyes. This provides the
setting for the stuff that packs 'em in to
Schwarzenegger movies: high-tech special
effects, killing and general mayhem.
It also provides director Paul Michael Glaser
with the chance for a wicked sendup of
television and its place in the moral universe.
He and screenwriter Steven de Souza have
created a burlesque of telehype that is
both marvelously comic and uncomfortably
apt. The movie is a little too long and it's
a pity that the restored version wasn't
trimmed a bit. Some of the dialog is wooden
and predictable, but the calculated excesses
of the game show host (Richard Dawson
who emceed Family Feud) are the perfect
frame for the physical excesses of Arnold
the Giant.
That the same target should be available
after twenty years is a tribute to the
persistence of televised cheap thrills.
I guess we should all be grateful.
--Lynn Hoffman, author of THE NEW SHORT COURSE IN WINE
and the forthcoming novel bang-BANG from Kunati Books.
A true classic!.......2006-07-25
I used to love this movie. This movie is such a great mixture of enormous plot holes, ultraviolence and phenomenally bad Schwarzenegggerjokes, that it is just pure fun to see all actors take things so serious! In the future criminals are being punished live on television during the Running Man game show by sadistic scum (one of Schwarzenegger's quotes during the movie) Of course the big former Austrian is also put on the show as a criminal contester and guess what happens? This truly is a classic! (SARR)

Amazon.com essential video

Never Looked Better!.......2007-07-02
This is one of my Favorite Movies and when I bought my PS3 this was going to be my first Blu-Ray, but the local store didn't have it.
Finally got it, and man was worth it! The Movie seriously has never looked better, it was the first one where I noticed the difference easily, the others being both Pirates of the Caribbean.
Had a friend over and just played the opening clip, his jaw was on the floor, he could not believe how good it looked!
A worthy hi def transfer, yet not perfect.......2007-06-07
Fans of this underground cult entry by Tarantino should be pleased by the overall Blu ray presentation. For a 1991-92 film, we couldn't expect any HD extras so we'll just emphasize about the decent video and audio transfers that reveal in most cases the limit of the source print. There is some grain and smooth detail very theatre like, but overall the visual look seems to be well calibrated to justify an upgrade next to the DVD.
As for the audio score, well you can't expect a noisy 5.1 track here since the movie is mostly dialogue oriented with very few gunshots but again, they can't really make it much better unless restoring it - which not only purists but most of us don't want.
In short, worth a purchase for fans of Tarantino.
Alright Blu-ray.......2007-05-16
This is a decent transfure for being an older film, most sceens look clean, but the disk is a bit lacking in extras.
A Very Intense Film.......2007-02-07
Beyond the conventional heist movie, I enjoyed this film. I found it to be very interesting and thoroughly engrossing. The cast is incomparable. Quentin Tarantino is the master of orchestrating such dysfunctional character studies. I don't know if the study is dysfunctional or the characters or both. This is a real nail bitter. Great character studies hold your interest throughout despite the implied graphic violence.

Remake-- Mistake.......2007-05-23
I don't know if it's the cast I didn't like or what; but it just wasn't good enough for me. The movie wasn't dark enough in a setting sense. I think a night time game would have been more engrossing and I give the casting a grade of D.
The comedy angle was corny this time around as the new MEAN MACHINE does not jell as a likeable unit; as the original film did. Too many jerks in this movie, and I didn't buy Sandler as quarterback.
LONGEST YARD.......2007-05-03
Anyone can play football. This movie is about football. The people in this movie r in jail but not in real life. The guys in jail r going to play the gards in a game of football. The guys in jail get to practis on a dirt field kind of a desert looking sand field. Most of the fast people are black, which paule crew has to play one of them in a game of basketball. If paule crew loses he has to leave and if he wins deke and his crew have to join the team.
By far the best movie I've seen this year.......2007-04-29
Why this movie isn't 5 stars (overall) is beyond me. It's well worth the money to add it to your movie collection. There's never a dull moment and the action is great. If you like football, get this movie.
ROFLMBO.......2007-04-26
I will never get tired of watching this movie! There are loads of great one-liners too. I definitely like this version the best.
LIMP REMAKE WHATS THE POINT?.......2007-03-27
First off, I am an big Adam Sandler fan,but this movie is really lame. The original Film is a classic. How do you screw this up? When I first heard about this film I was ready for something funny like "The Water Boy" that movie was hilarious and I think Sandler should have taken a good look at it again before doing this one. This film is not even worth a look.

Customer Reviews:
An ok movie.......2007-06-10
If you are purchasing this movie to see Keira Knightly's breasts, make sure you don't blink as you will miss them.
Otherwise the movie is good
Impressed but not..........2007-05-13
I bought this DVD because of Kiera Knightly, I won't deny it. That said I was not expecting much. It still disappointed me.
This film had some good story ideas, but it didn't deliver on any of them. The thriller aspect of it was less than thrilling and I found it to be anticlimatic.
If you are a Kiera fan I guess its worth having for the collection or renting it. If not there is no point to buying or renting this DVD.
Possibly The Worst Film Blunder Ever.......2007-01-03
Warning: Spoilers Abound.
Okay folks, I was flipping channels and came across a movie called The Hole, starring Thora Birch, Keira Knightley and Desmond Harrington. Now, aside from this terrible blunder I'm going to tell you about in just a few more sentences, the film was fairly entertaining. I dig Thora Birch, and her character was really well-played. What really shocked me though, was my quick research after the film was over. I mean, I checked IMdB, Rotten Tomatoes and Wikipedia. Although all reputable sources, none mentioned this ridiculous mistake.
Have you ever been so utterly sure of something so blantantly, painstakingly obvious that it would literally take an entirely different, alien planet to be able to even minutely comprehend the vast insipidness of its vacuous residents? That's how I felt after watching this movie and realizing that apparently I'm the only goddamn human being on this prosaic, infantile planet who immediately saw the dimwitted aberration for what it was!
And what exactly was this stupendous error, you ask? Well... It's very simple. I mean, it couldn't get more common sensically moronic than this. The basic plot of the film is four teenagers trapped in an old war bunker. The movie begins with Thora Birch's rendition of what happened: that her friend set this whole thing up, locked them in the 'hole' and didn't come back when he was supposed to. She escapes and the three others die. The story changes from what she originally told her psychiatrist to what actually happened. Turns out the only way out was actually locked from the inside and Thora had the key the whole time. The other teenagers die for various reasons, irrelevant to the blunder at hand, and she ends up telling the tale to her psychiatrist from inside the bunker. In the end, she kills the guy who set it up and plants the key on him. The police come and find Thora and her psychiatrist in the 'hole' and after rebuking the psychiatrist, mention that the case is now closed. At that moment, a flashback shows Thora murdering her friend that set everything up and planting the key on him. Right after that moment, I said to myself: "What the heck? The door locks from the inside?! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that either a) the door was never locked, or b) someone had to unlock it from the inside!" Alright, those weren't my exact words, but good god, it's so obvious!
And that, my friends, has got to be possibly the worst film blunder ever.
Better Than You'd Expect.......2006-12-23
Surprisingly good movie -- Laurence Fox as always, is hot, and the cast is very strong, even Kiera Knightly, who manages to pull off a good performance with a minimum of her trademark grimacing. The story is engrossing, and keeps you in gritty suspense all the way through.
Great Movie.......2006-09-28
I really enjoyed this movie and have told most of my friends about it and they liked it was well. I thought the acting was wonderful - you can feel the tension build as the whole situation disintegrates into chaos. Awesome ending as well :-)

Customer Reviews:
Runaway Train.......2007-05-13
Wonderful movie - It has everything, gripping adventure story, strong characters, and beautiful scenery. Jon Voight and Eric Roberts are terrific as the two escaped cons. Based on great screenplay by Akira Kurosawa. One of my all time favorites.
SHORT TRAIN RUNNIN.......2007-03-27
Set in the northernmost wilderness of Alaska, RUNAWAY TRAIN was a surprise hit back in 1985, garnering Oscar nominations for stars Jon Voight and Eric Roberts.
Voight plays the grizzly safecracker who escapes from a maximum security prison with his adoring fan, rapist Eric Roberts. Their escape leads them to hop on a train, not knowing that the engineer has dropped dead and fallen off the train and that they are hurtling across the wasteland at high speeds with no engineer! Nor do they know that Rebecca DeMornay is also on the train, the engineer's assistant who had taken an untimely nap and has awakened to her dangerous situation.
The cast is good: Voight and Roberts chew up the scenery, DeMornay is effective and supporting John P. Ryan oozes evil as the sadistic warden. It's rather dated but the scenery is haunting and beautiful and has enough action to maintain interest.
What is "freedom"?.......2007-03-09
Like the song says, "freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose". Is freedom a physical or philosophical thing? It depends on where you are at and where you have come from. For "Manny" Mannheim (Jon Voight) freedom is going out on your own terms. If you can take your nemesis with you, all the better.
This film is a classic "under the radar" film. You will not find it on many critic's lists, best of lists or featured in many film retrospectives, but it comes as close to some of the classics of the 30's and 40's as any film of it's era.
Voight's performance is powerful and multi-dimensional. The point where he berates Brock (Eric Roberts) for falling into the too easy macho con trap and not working to improve himself for re-entry into society is a revelation. When Brock asks Manny if he (Manny) could suck it up and work at some dull job to make it on the outside, Manny replies, "I wish I could". The look on Brock's face says it all. "This guy really means it. Here is a hardened con, a tough guy that everyone at the prison idolizes for his spirit and he's telling me that he would trade it all for a chance to wash dishes or clean floors. But he knows it is too late. He cannot go back now." Manny is a man locked into his fate. He cannot knuckle under to the warden, or the system or to his own will to live free or die.
A bothersome aspect of the film for me is Eric Robert's performance. Somehow he garnered a nomination for best supporting actor, but to me his performance is a little too overbearing and annoying. I know that he is supposed to idolize Manny and play the young man who grows during the film, and I can get that as a boxer he may be a bit "punchy" but he often sounds like he is doing a drunken Elvis imitation and comes close to overacting in some scenes. Also the storyline concerning the administrators at the central railroad office tends to veer close to cartoonish comedy, but these are small points that should not distract you from the overall message and story in the movie.
I recommend this movie to anyone who is in the mood for an above average adventure movie with some great scenes of wintry landscapes shot along lonely rail lines and a protagonist a cut above the usual one dimensional character protrayal.
Konchalovsky crafts a memorable screen moment that reminded me the dramatic sequence of John Huston in Moby Dick..........2007-01-12
Based on a screenplay by the Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, "Runaway Train" is bloody, intense and oppressive... It is a movie with arresting images about a notorious life term prisoner who has been welded in a hole for 3 years and a psychotic warden who practically hopes that his dangerous prisoner will make the first move, so that he can have an excuse to 'stop his clock.' The film takes place in the freezing landscapes of the Alaskan wilderness, and in a maximum security prison where the only escape is death...
Soon enough, Manny (Jon Voight) is on the loose along with another fellow prisoner, an unbalanced prizefighter called Buck (Eric Roberts), infected by Manny's madness... Their escape is a serious blow to the obsessive warden (John P. Ryan) who knows that his prison will be out of control if he fails to get them back...
Faced with certain death in the world's most inhospitable climates, Manny and Buck wind up on an unmanned train ignoring that its driver has suffered a heart attack, and the locomotive is rolling into something very fast...
Jon Voight completely embodies the brutal convict... The fierce intensity in his eyes, the ferocity in his voice, the hardness to withstand pain, these are indications of his madness... He has an injured hand, a scar around his eye, and a desire for revenge rooted deeply in his thoughts...
Though the movie is a character study of the dangerous inmate... We see the aftermath of Manny's last encounter with the warden... We don't get the opportunity to examine his mind or figure out what makes him so fiery... Just like Buck, we're looking at a man at war with world and everybody in it...
The film's centerpiece is the showdown between the warden and Manny... At this point it becomes clear that the warden's personal obsession overrides any human consideration... It is a thrilling show... Manny believes in nothing, and is capable of anything...
Andrei Konchalovsky depicts prison life with all the usual clichés: uptight guards, beatings, and murders... He does an admirable job of taking us into strange figures on a killer train... Konchalovsky crafts a memorable screen moment that reminded me the dramatic sequence of John Huston in Moby Dick...
Dramatic, suspenseful, excellent script and scenery.......2007-01-04
Jon Voight, Eric Roberts and Rebecca De Mornay turn in superb gripping performances. They come from 3 different worlds, yet are trapped on this runaway train trying to save their own lives. The two prison escapees (Voight and Roberts) display a wonderful dichotomy of personality - brutal, savage inmates who would kill to get away, while at the same time showing themselves to be decent protective people in their treatment of De Mornay who is a railroad employee who just happened to get stuck on this ride with them.
All the "railroady" scenes are very very good. The mechanical "facts" about the locomotives, the track, and their various attempts to stop or reroute the train, are all done very well and done believably.
The film gains a lot of drama from Alaskan wilderness, the frigid outdoor action scenes, and the big machines rocking and careening through the mountains.
I caught this movie by accident on late-night TV once, and bought this DVD because the movie is so good that I got sick and tired of waiting for it to come around on TV again.
The language is a little coarse, but not unrealistically so. Unlike current worthless Hollywood trash that peppers its scrips with the "F" word purely for shock value, the tough talk in this movie is completely believable and appropriate.
If you like drama, complex personalities, dialog, and a story line where you have to pay attention (instead of just watching cuties and car crashes), buy this movie. Send your drinking buddies and your girlfriend home, turn off the lights, and watch this movie in solitude. You won't be sorry.
If Hollywood kept making movies like this, I'd go to the movies.
I don't hand out 5-star ratings to ANYTHING lightly.

Mediocre adaptation of O'Donnell's book.......2007-04-28
Based on James O'Donnell's "The Bunker", this movie attempts to recreate the last days of Hitler. On the positive side, the sets are excellent and the movie covers most of the major events that took place, although not always in the correct order. On the negative side, Anthony Hopkins' performance is decidedly two-note: either apoplectic or catatonic. He did not accurately portray the charismatic man who was able to charm, inspire and hypnotize his followers until the very last. Hopkins either screams or stares blankly into space. Also, the movie gives us a Goebbels who sounds like he's straight off the boat from Brooklyn, a Goering who reminded me of Colonel Klink and a Col. Von Below who minces about like he just stepped out of La Cage aux Folles. Who knew that the Nazi hierarchy was so gay friendly?! Speer is over-romanticized and there are several scenes which I don't recall from history, such as Goebbels' dinner party in the Chancellery. This movie just didn't do it for me. It seemed like this movie was so intent on covering all the bases that it forgot to be dramatic. Its impression is more of a Bunker highlight film than a story employing dramatic tension and buildup to achieve climax and resolution. Still, any attempt at dramatizing the Bunker days is worth viewing.
The Bunker.......2007-03-28
Anthony Hopkins is a fine actor who puts in another good performance. The movie itself is what it is a 1980's TV drama about insane people in an insane regime, who started a world war, then destroyed themselves in the end
Beware the DVD Soundtrack.......2006-06-19
I have to give the dvd version of the Bunker only 4 stars, since someone, for some reason, has changed the movie's soundtrack from the original. To hear the original score, which adds a great deal to the overall feeling of the film, you will have to secure the vhs version.
As for who captures the "real" Hitler better, some like Guinness, some Hopkins, and some Bruno Ganz, who is remarkable in Downfall. I think they all manage to capture something of a person who was something of a stranger to even those closest to him.
Plus, Downfall is a German-made film, and it's interesting to see Hitler through the eyes of a subsequent generation of Germans. Compare Ganz's role in Downfall with his excellent performance in Wings of Desire. Just for fun.
Anthony Hopkins sets the standard.......2005-03-28
'The Bunker' is one of three films that deal with Hitler's final days as the Soviets encircle Berlin and put an end to the Third Reich in April/May 1945.
'The Bunker' is both one of the best and one of the worst of the three (the others being 1973's 'Hitler: the last ten days' and 2005's 'Downfall') at the same time. The triumph of 'The Bunker' is Anthony Hopkins tour de force performance as Hitler, at times so exact it is as if you are watching a newsreel. The element that makes the film almost painful to watch is that almost a 1/3 of it is dedicated to the whitewashing of convicted Nazi war criminal Albert Speer.
One thing that makes 'The Bunker' different from the others is the occasional use of flashbacks, and although brief they do allow Hopkins to portray Hitler in different venues and in a relaxed mode, casually chating and enjoying the company of friends when times were fat. In the bunker itself Hopkins turns Hitler purple in a full throttle rage as he yells about the need to destroy "the scourge and pestilence of Jewish Marxism!"
'Hitler: the last ten days' does a bit better than the rest in portraying the supporting cast of characters in the drama but one stands out in 'The Bunker' and that is Michael Lonsdale as Martin Borman, Hitler's personal secretary and gatekeeper, a man of considerable power who plays his cards close to the vest and is always scheming to stay one step ahead of his rivals. Despite its flaws 'The Bunker' earns a high rating as the Hopkins performance simply cannot be missed.
Hopkins is a Weaker Hitler.......2003-07-18
This version of Hitler's last days begs comparison with the earlier production with Alec Guinness. Hopkin's Hitler comes across as weaker, less strong, but it is a careful study nonetheless. The production is top quality, although the supporting cast is a bit weak. The actor who plays Goebbels over does it a bit, while Speer is given a more sympathetic portrait than he deserves. The perspective of this movie is larger, as it covers the entire three month period of Hitler's life in the Bunker. At times a little slow, the movie is less dramatic than its earlier counter part with Guinness, but it is a worthwhile version anyway. Hopkin's Hilter starts to grow on you after a while, while his performance lacks the force of Guinness it is still a careful study of a dictator/madman in steady decline. Buy both versions of Hitler with Guinness and Hopkins and you will have a fascinating study of one of the world's most infamous leaders of the 20th Century.
