1 out of 5 stars Scratch that seven year itch goodbye........2006-08-24

Streisand as Monroe? Oye.
If she had played down the beauty wannabe aspect of her persona I think this might have worked...a little. But, once again, the mirror is two faced and the funny girl isn't seeing clearly as her costars scramble like a bunch of nuts going nowhere in a sandbox filled with mud. A star was dead and buried on this one.

1 out of 5 stars BOMBS AWAY.......2006-07-11

I finally got to see this one Babs movie that had eluded me for years. I wish it still had eluded me. Never have I seen Babs at her worse and in such a stupid, unfunny, non-entertaining waste of time, that I, her biggest fan, could stand it no longer and turned it off 3/4 the way in. ITS UNBEARABLE. What a waste of brilliant actors. This is Babs worse movie effort and should be quickly deleted from her sparkling catalog, never to be heard of again. Just plain awful!

2 out of 5 stars The worse film of Barbra...but..........2006-06-30

Well..I got the film recently cause I want to collect all the film of Barbra..I am a big fan of her..So I purchase it from the Amazon even though I herad about it is not a good one, but I thought...how worse could it be when it is played by Barbra?
Yes..it is really bad, pointeless story, boring dialogue,I only wonder why she accepted to play the main role in succh a bad movie..
Afterwards, if you are the same big fan like me,maybe you should still keep it,this is really only bad film from her I guess...for those movie fan weant to see a good movie but not the fan of her...forget about tis one!!

3 out of 5 stars Streisand's minor role but a collectible.......2006-01-30

It's just one of those movies ... but the special thing is Streisand's contribution. This DVD movie has a visual defect for 1-2 seconds on the original master tapes, I guess. However, it's worth being collected if you're a Streisand fan because this one allowed her to act out another personality.

4 out of 5 stars It's much better than its reputation.......2005-05-16

I bought this to see how bad it is after all the bad things I have heard about it. I was really surprised when I enjoyed it. Streisand
is the biggest surprise and delivers an excellent acting job. For once she becomes the character she is playing and discards all the typical Streisand mannerisms. Why, she even sang off-key!

The actors are very very good. The plot is interesting. I am glad that I have watched it.

This version is nothing - absolutely nothing - on the Katharine Hepburn version. See that one instead.

4 out of 5 stars Great Work of Art.......2005-10-26

I have been a fan of the stage for several decades and have seached high and low for a copy of this production. I saw it on ebay several times for hundreds of dollars but finally it has been made available to all. If you are a lover of great stage performances than this dvd is for you. It has been missing from my collection far to long. You see the late great Jack Lemmon at his best (on stage) and a young raw Kevin Spacey (he even has hair) working togther on stage. Then add Peter Gallagher and Bethel Leslie and you have some of the great stage performers of our time. I missed this one live - don't know how - but still kicking myself. Great to see it on DVD for generations to enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Lemmon aid.......2005-09-25

Jack Lemmon is brilliant in this 1987 television production of Eugene O'Neill's 1940 play as the patriarch of a severely dysfunctional family, James Tyrone--a former actor and now an emvbittered man in his 60s. His wife, Mary, played quite well by Bethel Leslie, is a morphine addict. His older son, Edmund, is consumptive but says he has "a bad cold". And his younger son, Jamie, is hard bitten, cynical--a chip off the old block. Jamie's bitterness echoes his father's in another way--he's a failed actor.

Edmund is played by Peter Gallagher. It's a little off-putting to connect a man with consumption to an actor with such a strapping frame. In spite of that, Gallagher does do a good job. The only somewhat false note, unfortunately, is supplied by Kevin Spacey as Jamie who turns in a somewhat one-dimensional performance. His cynicism comes through, but he doesn't shake that. Even when his lines indicate he's softened a little, trying to convey that he does in fact have some sympathy for his brother or his father, it still sounds aggressive. This was near the start of his professional acting career, so perhaps it's understandable.

The production itself, however, is first-rate. The director, Jonathan Miller, startled audiences by staging the play in such a way that there is often overlapping dialogue. This happens most often when two members of the family are arguing with each other, which is decidedly realistic. In an extremely intriguing one-hour audio interview that comes as a bonus on this DVD, Miller talks about this technique of overlapping dialogue. He is a brilliant man--both a medical doctor and a stage/opera director--and listening to him is a real pleasure.

There is also a one-hour audio interview with Kevin Spacey. Nowhere near as captivating as the interview with Miller, it is still of interest, particularly when Spacey recounts several anecdotes about his relationship with Jack Lemmon, who he considers a mentor.

The overlapping dialogue technique startled not only the audience, but also critics, many of whom lambasted Miller for this. After all, the playwright is O'Neill, an American institution. But personally, I think Miller did a terrific job. It's somewhat difficult to listen to endless dialogue from a dysfunctional family; this technique of having the characters talk over each other is exactly what dysfunctional family members would do in real life and it juices up the proceedings, makes the audience sit up and pay attention. I think it's perfect.

In fact, when you see and hear Long Day's Journey for the first time and you realize it was written in 1940, you realize just how far ahead of his time O'Neill really was. The substantial spate of plays and films that have been staged, produced, and released since that time with a dysfunctional family as the theme have testified to exactly how prescient and attuned the playwright was to the real core of American life--life as it's lived day to day in the home.

This is a brilliant play with a marvelous production. Lemmon is phenomenal; Leslie is great. Gallagher is very good and Spacey gives it a good try. Were it not for the somewhat weaker elements, this would be a five-star rating.

Still highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps the Penultimate .......2005-06-18

This is a wonderful interpretation of O'Neill's transcendental autobiographical work. The cast is fine, but a less "performed" example of Long Day's Journey into Night does exist. The 1962 film by Sidney Lumet actually succeeds more as a drama and as a glimpse into a tortured reality. It is hard to explain. It's like seeing Shakespeare acted out instead of embraced and performed. This newer cast acts the story. The Lumet cast lives the story. They breathe it. They are not actors cast in a show. They are the O'Neill family. Even the filming itself becomes an active part of the Lumet experience. Is buying this version a mistake? Absolutely not. I would just simply recommend taking a look at the Lumet version before deciding.

2 out of 5 stars Didn't care much for it..................2007-04-16

I had heard so many great things about this movie but it is just not my cup of tea. I don't know if it because I tend to like more horror type movies or what but I was really bored by them. Each of the movies started off really slow and they all ended basically the same way. I know the whole theme is humans are trash but it would have been nice for a little more suspense. The movies were violent but nothing one hasn't seen before several times so I am not sure about the shock value of it...I wasn't shocked, disturbed or upset.........just bored.

5 out of 5 stars If you enjoy extreme horror you must get this........2006-10-09

I have now seen about twenty Asian horror films, and this series definitely ranks among the best. I have written more extensive reviews under the individual titles, but suffice it to say that these movies make Audition look like a Disney romance. Bleak, bizarre, and ultra violent, yet surprisingly stylish and intelligent. This film maker has something to say, and will beat you senseless to make his point.

In short, if you want to see Ringu #25, stay away from this one. If you feel a bit more adventurous, I highly recommend this series.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely One of the Most Messed Up Movie Series Ever Made.......2005-07-14

Japanese people are just plain scary. I'm not being prejudiced, because I love the Japanese but they have created some of the most gut wrenching and mortifying movies ever made. Audition and the Guinea Pig series come to mind. But this puts those to shame (except maybe Devil's Experiment, and Flowers of Flesh and Blood) as one of the most unsettling films ever made.

All Night Long:
The story in this one is three guys are one day standing at a railroad crossing waiting for the bars to raise up, when a crazed man comes up to a girl. The man kills the girl right in front of the three guys. And then was about to murder one of them when another rams the guy with his motorcycle. The three decide to celebrate by having a "party" in which they are all to bring a girl over for some fun. One of the guys actually falls in love with the girl he was going to bring to the party, but is murdered by a group of young men that bully and harass people. The guy goes insane and gets the others to come with him to kill the group. When one tries to back out. He is threatened that when they are done with the group they'll come and kill him.
The movie is quite unsettling and quite graphic in its portrayl of rape and murder. It especially show rather effectively one of the character's descent into insanity.

All Night Long 2: Atrocity:
The best of the three on this collection in my opinion. The story focuses on a nerdy student named Shinichi during his summer vacation. Shinichi is a shy and quiet individual who's only solice in life comes from painting a model of a nude manga girl. One day A rich kid and his gang of thugs start picking on Shinichi. They beat him up and torch his model. Then one day Shinichi is visited by the leader of the thugs. Claiming that he wouldn't be harmed, Shinichi takes the invitation to go to the leaders home. There the leader shows Shinichi a girl that one of the thugs have kidnapped, and raped. the leader shows Shinichi how he is capable of being abusive, and cruel to people that are "trash." This movie is more F***ed up than the first ANL movie. Maybe it is because it looks like it was filmed with a personal camcorder, and was made on a relatively low budget. This movie was actually more upsetting than the most vile of the Guinea Pig movies. This one is definitely not for the weak of heart or stomach.

All Night Long 3: Final Atrocity:
First off I would like to say that the title is misleading, there are two more All Night Long movies that were made after this one. This one was actually sort of a letdown, especially after the great horror that was Atrocity. Although this one is a bit more offensive. It focuses on Kiku, a mentally handicapped guy who works in a love hotel. He is a normal person until one night he comes across some of a female neighbor's garbage. He takes it home and nails some of it to his walls. I'm talking everything even used tampons. He then starts becoming obsessed with this girl. Always stealing her garbage, leering at her at her work. He even gets pissed when a guy takes her to the love hotel he works at. He also meets up with an old man who has been doing the same thing Kiku has been doing, stealing people's garbage, but he's been doing it for years. Kitamura (the director) really shows off the message of the movie series, that message being, humans are garbage, in this movie.

In short this is one of the most f***ed up series of movies to ever have been released. If you are the type that is easily upset by this style of movie you should avoid it like the plague. It is deeply disturbing and makes you say WTF more than once after you have watched them. If your into Guinea Pig, Audition, or Ebola Syndrome you would like this collection. Just be prepared for a sickening experience. Also if you're thinking about buying these movies, buy the boxset. It only costs thirty dollars, for all three of them. That is more cost effective than buying all of three of them seperately for around ninety dollars.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it!.......2004-09-12

Recently I developed a fascination for Japanese horror movies. Some of the Japanese movies are really frightening to watch, and leave a deep impact on your after watching it. Some of these movies include the Ringu(the Ring) series, Ju-on(made as `the Grudge' in English starring Sarah Michelle Gellar), and also The Eye series. After watching all of the movies mentioned previously, I thought I would give All Night Long (called `Ooru naito rongu' in Japanese) a try. Sadly, I was not pleased with this one.

The first of the trilogy revolves around 3 guys, who by coincidence, witness the murder of a woman by a psychotic man who randomly kills her on the street. Strangely enough, these 3 guys get together and become friends and decide to throw a party in order to forget the incident they were witnessed to. They decide to get dates for the party, but in the end, due to various incidents because of other people, fail in doing so. Due to these incidents, they decide to let their anger off and take revenge on these people.

The second story, called `Atrocity', starts off with a high school boy who is spends his summer vacation by chatting on the computer, and playing with a doll. He is bullied by a gang headed by a homosexual, who develops an interest for the boy. As the boy does not feel the same way about the leader, this leads to some disturbing consequences.

The third movie, named `Final Atrocity', is considerably the most graphic of all three. This time, the story consists of a young boy who works in a sleazy hotel, where customers bring in their partners to have sex with, and leave garbage lying around. The boy apparently likes collecting trash, and starts collecting those of a woman living near the hotel, who he is attracted to. He starts following her around and collecting everything that she throws, to the point where he even starts eating rubbish that she leaves behind.

Katsuya Matsumura, the director behind all three Nihilistic movies, tries to portray the disturbing image of human nature in all three of the movies, and succeeds to some extent. While the first movie was an average (I thought it would be really good considering they made so many sequels to it), the second and, especially the third, focus on too much graphic violence and abuse, which just stalls the storyline of the movie, not even progressing anywhere. The only high point of all these movies is the acting, which is considerably good, since you feel that the characters are at some point really insane. The eerie music also adds well to the background during some scenes. This is why I gave this a 2 star rating. The only reason I saw the whole series was because I was hoping that the next sequel would be better than its predecessor. After watching all the movies, you don't feel scared; instead you are left with a feeling of disgust and revulsion towards them. In the end, you wonder, what the point of the whole story was in the first place.

So, if you want to watch some really good Japanese horror, consider the ones I mentioned in the beginning of the review. However, if you like a lot of gore without any storyline, give `All Night Long' a try.

5 out of 5 stars haha nice.......2004-08-30

All 3 movies are sick and twisted. Definatly awesome. The second one though is my favorite. So if you are in to disgusting meaningless murder, these movies are for you. If not...well walk away.

5 out of 5 stars If you like 60's jazz, then this is the ticket...........2007-06-29

Interesting movie, relatively unknown here in the US, re-released and re-mastered to reflect the popularity of perhaps, its best-known star, Patrick McGoohan, better know for his role as John Drake in "Secret Agent" and the cult-favorite, "The Prisoner." Richard Attenborough, also a name very familiar to fans of British cinema, rounds out the rest of the cast featuring a who's who's of 60's popular jazz: Dave Brubeck, Johnny Scott, Johnny Dankworth, Tubby Hayes, and none other than the legendary Charles Mingus all in cameo roles.

The plot is a hip and cool reworking of Shakespeare's "Othello" amongst the jazz clubs and warehouses in London circa early 60's. McGoohan, the baddie, shines here as talented but a manipulative drummer, Johnny Cousin (shades of Iago) who attempts to draw a former, and newlywed jazz diva, Emily (Betsy Blair) out of retirement ultimately pitting her against her jealous husband, jazzman Aurelius Rex (Paul Harris).

BAFTA-award winning director, Basil Dearden, effectively adds a "noir" atmosphere to the film: tall warehouses reflected on the wet streets of 60's London's most popular clubs for the "in" set where the clink of glasses and spirited conversation prevail. By no-means a piece of celluoid art per se, but an engaging and interesting movie with well-developed convincing characterizations and some great jazz riffs to boot!

This is actually a repackage of a previously released dvd, "Live in Africa". I was duped by the new colorful package, which made it appear of higher quality than the previous release. The dvd is still under 40 minutes long (packaging claims 40 minutes); the Pointer Sisters actually only perform for about 30 minutes; there are no bonuses -- in fact there isn't even a main menu! The disc just plays and then it's over. Despite the claims of a 5.1 remix, this is basically a mono soundtrack with audience noises added to the surround channels. The .1 channel is mixed so low that it's inaudible. I cranked my the sub level all the way up just to get some bass into the sound. What's left of the sound is a tinny mess. It doesn't even sound like it was recorded off of a soundboard.

The Pointer Sisters look fabulous, and fans of their early Blue Thumb period material will like the song selection, but this dvd just falls short in too many areas to recommend it at all. Maybe for $... it would be worth it. Pioneer out to be ashamed to have let their name be put on this mess. I've never heard of the other company listed, "Gravity Limited."

    Product Description

Germany released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. Languages: English Dolby Digital 2.0 German Dolby Digital 2.0 Synopsis: The works of William Shakespeare have inspired many films, including page-to-stage adaptations like Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet and much looser inspirations, such as West Side Story. All Night Long very definitely belongs to the latter category, keeping the plot of Othello, but re-setting it in an early '60s jazz milieu. An unfairly neglected little treasure, All Night Long is an intriguing and atmospheric thriller that updates Shakespeare most effectively. Set over the course of one late night party, the film is virtually a continuous jam session between some of the brightest lights of the jazz world. This constant musical background infuses every scene, creating a backdrop that contextualizes the dramatic events and adds a purposefully intrusive feel to the scenes. Johnny Cousin is obsessed with making his mark in the jazz world and the music reflects and intensifies that obsession. Patrick McGoohan is excellent, a wound coil ready to spring at the slightest provocation, but battling to keep himself taut. He is sly, scheming, and duplicitous, but capable of presenting himself as genial and sympathetic when needed. The audience, however, is ever aware of his ambition and of its overwhelming influence upon him. His breakdown at the end is superb. All Night Long cops out a little at the finish, replacing the original tragedy's deaths with a happy ending, but until then, it is engrossing and original. Extras: Interactive Menu

5 out of 5 stars Another must see for fans of extreme horror........2006-10-09

A teenager is being extorted by a gang of thugs which is lead by a childhood friend of his. To complicate things, his former friend is also a sadistic homosexual who wishes to take him as his lover. His situation becomes more and more bleak until he answers an online ad offering to solve his problems. Through the ad he meets three other misfit teens who agree to help him pay his debt to the gang. Things go horribly wrong when the gang bursts in on the newfound friends and makes it clear that they will not buy their way out of trouble. In the end our lead gets his revenge, but loses his humanity in the process.

This movie is very much like the first in the series, and if you enjoy violent horror with a touch of sadism, then this film is definitely for you.

5 out of 5 stars The most violent film ever made. PERIOD........2005-05-04

This is the most disgusting film I've ever seen. It is more disgusting than Volume 3. I haven't seen Volume 1. This film incorporates the most depraved violence I've ever seen on television.

What makes it so positively repugnant is that, unlike Volume 3, it isn't about grossing you out. This movie is obscene because you see the actors convincingly acting out situations such as: a woman is kicked and pissed on the ground with the tips of her fingers severed off and bleeding and being told to call herself a whore. Scenes comparable to the one above make up 3/4 of the movie.

Here's the plot: a bunch of high school students torture a lonely boy to the point where we are talking about sado-masochistic homosexual and heterosexual rape; many of the characters being victimized are just caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and that makes the torture they undergo even tougher to watch. A guy is made to watch while his girl-friend is raped and degraded in front of him by several men. The scenes last for hours. 3/4 of the movie is sadism that made the most violent scenes in Pulp Fiction a joke.

This movie compares to Caligula but is worse simply because at least in Caligula, you get get a nice break. This is the most disgusting film I've ever seen. This movie was released in 1981 in Japan where it was mainstream. It simply boggles the mind. This film was only recently released on DVD in the US. I can't imagine a movie of such sado-masochistic violence ever being released in theaters here.

It is a more violent film to watch than anything from Hollywood or Europe. This is the most violent and disgusting film I've ever seen. That's why I give it 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best in the series, but still not bad........2006-10-09

This is not as strong as the other two, but it is still very much worth seeing. While the other two focussed on revenge and the ravages of violence on the human mind, this one deals more with the madness of human obsession.

Instead of three misfits whom fate has thrown together, this time we have a single protagonist who becomes further isolated as the film continues. While the usual scenes of rape and torture are ever present, they affect the main character in an entirely different manner. Rather than exploding with violent rage or hatred, this time our main character sees his emotions disintegrate entirely. In the end, people are nothing more than objects to him...no more valuable than the trash we might discard.

I think what made this installment less enjoyable for me was the coldness with which the violece was approached. In the other two films, the protagonists would take a sadistic pleasure in their actions, often followed by remorse. These were overall good people who were forced to behave violently to survive in a violent world. In this film, the main character feels absolutely nothing. His intentions are neither good or bad; he is simply going through the motions. I understand this is intentional, but it is still somewhat less satisfying for me.

4 out of 5 stars just plain perverse.......2004-01-11

Japan has been pumping out the sickest movies ever since the sixties, and this is the latest trash to have floated out of those eastern shores. The story is about a kid who collects the trash of a girl he likes. He then creates portfolios out of her discarded sanitary napkins, pubic hairs and so on. Then he meets a guy that has had this sort of hobby for years...

Havent seen the other two in the collection but I would definitely buy the three dvds for a meager 31 bucks if you have no way of renting these. Excellent value for harsh entertainment. Production shot on video, but that lends to the depressing atmosphere.

5 out of 5 stars An emotionally draining experiment in nihilism.......2003-01-21

Have you ever seen one of those movies that shows you images you wish you hadn't seen? A movie that leaves you feeling disgusted but overwhelmed with thoughts you never believed existed inside you? No? If the previous statements haven't turned you off already, All Night Long 3 might be an experience to consider.
The second sequel in this most unique series is not one that is easily forgotten. Portraying an adolescent male and his obsession with an older woman in his neighborhood, nothing is left to the imagination. Certain scenes push the boundaries of acceptable taste, and makes one wonder if the director is looking to attain pure exploitation. The concept of "human beings as garbage" is intruiging, but far too convoluted to be taken seriously.
So why five stars? Sometimes, certain aspects of a movie can be greater than the sum of its parts. In this case, the atmosphere is what makes the film so phenomenal. The music and the overall look of the film combine to envelop the viewer into a nightmare never before captured on film. It is certainly not a movie that will be appreciated by the majority of the population, but for those willing to endure such an ugly movie(their is no other word for it), they will be rewarded with images that will haunt them forever.

Three teenage misfits meet under bizarre circumstances and become fast friends. When one of them is forced to watch his girlfriend be raped and murdered by local thugs, the three of them decide to get revenge.

This is one of the best Asian horror films I have seen, and I have seen quite a few. Not for the squeemish, it is filled with extremely realistic scenes of rape and torture. It is basically the story of how three reasonably normal teenagers decend into madness with horrifying results.

More disturbing than Audition...if you enjoy ultra violent horror movies then this is a must see.

4 out of 5 stars Dave Brubeck and Charlie Mingus.......2007-03-23

The Opening credits list this as A Rank Organisation, Bob Roberts Production. The movie is something in which Jazz buffs will be interested. It has a "Peter Gunn" feel throughout. In the forefront are some great Jazz riffs by such notables as Dave Brubeck, Charlie Mingus, Johnny Dankworth and Tubby Hayes. Richard Attenborough is listed and has a smallish role. Patrick McGoohan has a larger role and accomplishes this with a star turn. Keith Mitchell also has star power. Paul Harris is stellar, but the unsung heroes of this UK produced "Jazz thriller" based loosely on Othello are Brubeck and British trumpeter Bert Courtley. McGoohan closes the film with some pretty solid drumming, but we all know how that was done, yet he looks the part. It is taken straight from VHS to DVD with no digital improvements.
