A darkly comic ride, this intense and original 1991 offering from the Coen brothers (Fargo, Blood Simple) gleefully attacks the Hollywood system and those who seek to sell out to it, portraying the writer's suffering as a loony vision of hell. John Turturro (Miller's Crossing, Jungle Fever) plays the title character, a pretentious left-wing writer from New York City who is brought to 1930s Hollywood to write a script for a wrestling movie for palooka actor Wallace Beery. Fink thinks the job is beneath him, but his desire for acceptance gets the better of him, and he suddenly finds himself holed up in a fleabag hotel in Los Angeles, where he is almost immediately afflicted with writer's block. Various distractions begin to enter his life, first in the form of a famous southern writer (John Mahoney) whom Fink idolizes, and then his neighbor in the hotel, a seemingly amiable salesman played by John Goodman (Sea of Love, Raising Arizona). The writer turns out to be a self-loathing drunk whose secretary (Judy Davis) is the one actually doing the writing. And the neighbor, the working-class hero who Fink made his reputation writing about, may have a horrifying secret of his own. Equal parts social commentary and hilarious farce, and winner of the Best Picture, Actor, and Director prizes at the Cannes Film Festival, Barton Fink is a visionary and original comic masterpiece not to be missed. --Robert Lane
Description
Set in Hollywood during the 1940's, "Barton Fink" is a comic satire about creative egos, flashy moguls, a travelling salesman and a nasty case of writer's block. Barton Fink (John Turturro) is a New York playwright lured to Hollywood to work as a screenwriter. It doesn't take long for Barton's life to erupt in complete chaos. His studio boss orders the serious-minded Barton to write a low budget wrestling movie. Deeply disappointed, Barton returns to his seedy hotel, types one sentence and then¿ nothing. To make matters worse, he is continually interrupted by Charlie (John Goodman), a chatty travelling insurance salesman who lives next door. Eventually they become friends and Charlie tries to help Barton by teaching him the finer points of wrestling. As the clock ticks away and the temperature climbs, Barton becomes more desperate as his life spins out of control.

Why Did I Wait So Long to Be So Disappointed . . . ?.......2007-07-03
This film had been recommended to me for some time, so I finally got around to renting it. Unfortunately, by the time it was over I just felt angry at how manipulated I felt. The Coens seem to take special glee in how "profound" they can appear by leaving the viewer in the dark as what the point of it all is. I believe the term is "intellectual masturbation."
To its credit, the production qualities are all first rate: production design, acting, music, and cinematography. The camera work, in particular, reminded me of a Kubrick film, with set pieces which must have taken several takes to get exactly right.
But in the end you feel cheated. The story requires too much patience to stick with in comparison to the payoff at the end, which is non-existent--Just the Coens snickering to themselves as they visually say, "See how cute and clever we are...?" And their point is...?
If you want to check out a Coen brothers film, rent or purchase Miller's Crossing. It is excellent!
Curiouser and curiouser.......2007-06-02
Barton Fink is a strange movie, even by the Coen brothers' standards. It's style is a blend of the two traditions the Coens normally alternate between in their movies: noir and screwball comedy. Set in the 1940s, Barton Fink is a nerdy Jewish playwright in the social realist mode, whose abiding ambition is to create a theatre for the common man. Enjoying success in his hometown, he is lured to Hollywood to script wrestling pictures for a wildly zany, enthusiastic producer - who gets some of the best lines in the film: 'You from New York? I'm from New York, well, Minsk if you go back far enough'. Checking into the delightfully seedy Hotel Earle (which is a character in itself with its gloopy, peeling wallpaper, cheap mysterious pictures of women on deserted beaches, and quaint, old timer lift operators) Barton suffers from writers block, unfamiliar with the popular wrestling genre, and hearing strange noises from the room next door.
A quarter of the way through, the plot is taught and suspense is great, Barton encounters his neighbour - the jovial insurance salesman Charlie Meadows, who is the epitome of the common man Fink aims to put into his art - 'you want some stories Barton, I'll tell you some stories'. Barton, however, goes badly awry, falling in with the Falkneresque writer Bill Mayhew, who is a prolific, avuncular Hollywood legend when sober but a violent, unstable bully when drunk. Barton tries to learn the secrets of wrestling pictures from Mayhew's wife, Audrey, who has a great 1940s look of the tough minded, caring wife, with pale skin and red hair, and he is mortified to discover that Audrey has ghostwritten much of Mayhew's work.
Instead of questions at the sinister, Shiningesque Hotel Earle resolving themselves, the film busts apart at the seams in the latter stages. Madness, slapstick and exaggerated horror prevail - two tough talking, anti-semitic cops ('I knew this dump wasn't restricted')arrive to investigate the strange death of Audrey, and decapitation of Mayhew. The ending is a lazy piece of overblown fire and fury, with Barton suffering from his hubris and a great many strands of the film frayed and unresolved.
I found Barton Fink to be ultimately unsatisfactory for this reason, though some of its parts - the skilled recreation of old Hollywood, the waspish portrayal of prevailing attitutes, the horned dilemma faced by the writers: maximum money for minimal originality, and the wild studio execs - does mean the movie as a visual spectacle is likely to remain lodged in your mind.
Barton Fink.......2007-01-04
Very dark but pretty good not one of my favorite of the Cohen Brothers movies.
Clifford Odetts=Barton Fink.......2006-07-11
This is a great movie which has as its theme the subversion of purpose by the Hollywood grist-mill and the trouble of screen adaptation from the writer's point of view. The character Barton Fink is based loosely upon the real-life difficulties of playwright Clifford Odets in the world of Hollywood. Jack Lipnick is Louis B. Mayer. W.P. "Bill" Mayhew is William Faulkner. The character of Audrey is most probably a melange of Howard Hawks's real-life script girl Meta Carpenter, with whom Faulkner carried on an intimate relationship, and Leigh Brackett who worked with Jules Furthman to adapt Faulkner's work/dialog for Hawks's movies. Great imagery (the sink drain leading to the drain pipe reminiscient of the flash-back transitions in Edgar Ulmer's "Detour"), damned fine acting and smart dialog as well. Definitely the best of the Coen's.
if clifford odets were not already dead, he would die now -- thank god!.......2006-06-04
i seem to be finally catching up with the coen brothers, and have no idea why i stayed away so long. john turturro (yay suny new paltz theater department!) as a pretentious playwright (he might have written "the hours" years later), modeled none too lovingly on clifford odets. i love the in-joke of naming john goodmans satan spoof "karl mundt" (a joke only political junkies will get), and john mahoney is neat as a pseudo fitzgerald washed up writer. if not quite great, you can certainly see where "fargo" sprang from.

Pretty Brittany Murphy and prettier Ashton Kutcher make a surprisingly enjoyable comic team in Just Married, a romantic comedy about a horrible honeymoon. After a whirlwind romance, radio traffic announcer Kutcher and rich girl Murphy get married over the objections of her upper-crust family. Their love can overcome snobbery--but as the cuddly pair start to drive each other nuts over mishaps traveling through Europe, it starts to look like their love can't overcome intimacy. Just Married has a sprightly script that keeps one foot on the ground (unlike some recent romantic comedies that seem to have no connection to reality) and one eye on the small ways in which lovers can get on each other's nerves. Kutcher (Dude, Where's My Car?) and Murphy (Clueless, 8 Mile) have a sweet yet volatile chemistry that keeps the antics lively. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Ashton Kutcher (Dude, Where's My Car?, TV's That '70's Show) and Britney Murphy (8 Mile, Don't Say A Word) take the cake in this outrageous hit comedy that proves love and laughter are the perfect match. Sarah (Murphy) is a happy-go-lucky rich girl whose
Customer Reviews:
This movie got it.......2007-01-30
This is very funny romantic comedy. Even though it isn't funny all the way through the many laughs you do get make up for it.
There were so many unexpected laughs that i ended up in stitches so I was lucky I was the only one in the cinema.
Just remember not everything goes smoothly at first and whatever you do... make sure the door is wide enough before carrying your wife over the threshold!!!
Honeymoon from hell.......2007-01-16
I think Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy are two of the brightest actors around today. And together on screen they share a wonderful chemistry for all to see which makes for a very funny, well written comedy directed by Shawn Levy (Cheaper By The Dozen, Night At The Museum) who does a fantastic job directing these two around picturesque Europe.
Kutcher and Murphy play newlyweds Tom and Sarah who come from entirely different backgrounds and share apparently nothing in common, and are about to learn some hard and hillarious lessons in love and loyalty whilst honeymooning in Europe. Throw in an ex-boyfriend who appears to be stalking the couple everywhere they go, and you get some very funny moments as we find out if opposites really do attarct.
One of the best comedies I have ever seen.
A very funny movie.......2006-01-23
When i saw this movie 2 years ago in theaters it was hilarious i love this movie and "ASHTON KUTCHER" is a hoot i like the part when he was taking her in the doorway he bumped her head it was funny my dad laughed alot and my stepmom laughed so hard it was very very funny you should get it it is very funny.
Cute Movie!.......2005-12-27
This is a cute movie. It is about a rich girl and a poor boy and how their families object to them getting married. The marriage doesn't work out. This movie is about the rich girl and the poor boy on their honey moon and the hilarious situations they get themselves into.
RECOMMENDED!
Hilarious comedy!.......2005-11-01
The reason I think this movie is so fab might have something to do with the fact that I did watch it on a 14h airplane trip (5 times...), but the story is good and the funny bits are many!
Ashton and Brittany do a great job in this movie where they play the young couple that just got married, or maybe it's just Brittanys voice that maked the movie enjoyable. Everything is fine, till they go on their honeymoon.
If there's anything that drags this movie down, it's the serious message in the movie (brittanys parents are rich snobs and don't want her to be with ashton, but with her snobby ex) - it gets old too fast. It just does not fit in. Go see it for yourselves :)

High society gets a dose of monkey business in this family-friendly bit of simian slapstick. Less foul and more fun than Clyde from the Clint Eastwood comedies, Dunston is the practical-joking orangutan partner of foppish jewel thief Rupert Everett. Making his escape in a five-star New York hotel, Dunston lands in the protective care of 10-year-old Eric Lloyd, the high-spirited son of harried hotel manager Jason Alexander, and together they turn the snooty social event of the year into a zoo. Faye Dunaway is Alexander's overbearing boss just aching for a comic comeuppance, and Paul "Pee-wee Herman" Reubens dons a mauve tuxedo as Buck La Farge, animal-control specialist. Would you believe the monkey upstages them all? Though hardly the smartest comedy around, this is a cute, cuddly little barrel full of monkeyshines just made for the younger crowd. Rated PG for one (yelled) word. --Sean Axmaker
Description
A 5-star hotel turns into a 3-ring circus when an orangutan named Duston checks in. Jason Alexander ("Seinfeld"), Faye Dunaway ("Network") and Eric Lloyd ("The Santa Clause") star in this hilarious romp about an orangutan who gets loose in the elegant Majestic Hotel on the eve of the social event of the season. Dodging his jewel-thieving owner and the frantic hotel manager, Dunston is befriended by the manager's ten-year old son, Kyle, who is determined to help his new friend escape. Filled with laughter and comic high-jinks, DUNSTON CHECKS IN is "a steady stream of giggles for those who get a kick out of monkey business." (Henry Sheehan, Orange County Register).
Customer Reviews:
perfect grandparent and grandchildren movie.......2007-04-27
My grandsons really enjoyed watching Dunston, many times, in parts and in its entirety. We had so much fun together enjoying the antics of Dunston and the other silliness. The best part is that although it is a kid movie, it is really fun for the adults too. I am replacing our damaged VHS tape with a DVD, so they can continue to have it as a choice in their entertainment library.
Amazing.......2005-09-24
The future is bright the future is orangutan.
There needs to be more monkeys in films!
Good movie. But 5 STARS for AMAZING JENNIFER BASSEY!!!!!!.......2005-05-30
Usually I don't make such crappy reviews, but Jennifer Bassey's massage towel scene was so show stealing and sexy, I had to be biased! Wish I were the one touching her delicious body at the time.
Cute movie........2005-04-18
My 5 yr. old Grandson found this movie to be very entertaining.
I would recommend for this age group.
Unless you're 7, you might want to check out.......2005-01-24
When young Eric (Kyle Grant) befriends an orangutan named Dunston (played by Sam) in a luxury lodge, he soon learns that the ape has been trained to perform acts of larceny throughout the 4-star hotel and the mystery of who owns him unfolds. The manager (Jason Alexander) is under scrutiny to gain a coveted 5th star when Dunston checks in, and everything goes upside down thanks to the sticky-fingered orange-furred "guest". Look for lots of broad comic shenanigans with Faye Dunaway as the rich-bitch hotel owner, and Rupert Everett as the cane-wielding, buck-toothed Lord Rutledge.

Century Hotel the movie.......2007-05-13
Great movie to watch. You have to watch the whole thing form the beginning or you could get lost. David Hewlett was great.
An interesting, quircky movie.......2007-02-11
Century Hotel is a movie about a hotel room, and seven stories about the people who have stayed in Room 720 over nearly a century. The writers and director made conscious decisions about the cinematic styles for each era, and even though none of the stories was very long by necessity, they brought the moment into the light and gave you enough for you to hang your imagination on. They went for edgy and succeeded in some ways with stories about love, betrayal, beginnings and endings. The stories are told through the characters' actions and dialog, and you're allowed to draw your own conclusions about what went on after.
I liked Century Hotel, it was a fine freshman effort that came in under $750,000. The DVD is nicely done, with a commentary track that is a tiny bit pretentious, but overall they do have a few things to say about the film. The short "Moon Palace" was worth the cost of the DVD.
Despite flaws and uneven quality, I found it enjoyable.......2005-05-29
This 2001 Canadian art film is composed of several short stories which all take place in the same hotel room over the last century. Century Hotel is a low budget film and a good platform for aspiring actors, most of whom were unknown to me with the exception of Mia Kushner who I recognize as the character who plays Jenny on "The L Word".
Some of the stories work. Some don't. And the quality of the acting is mixed. The stories are not interrelated but yet we see them in pieces which make the concept rather interesting. Also, the many romantic scenes all display an abundance of flesh and there are many surprises in the twists and turns of the plots. There are definitely flaws in the production however and some of the stories are quite unbelievable.
I can't help it though. I enjoyed this film immensely and couldn't stop watching. I therefore give it a mild recommendation just because it held my interest.
Interesting idea with mixed results.......2003-08-21
I feel like this plot has been done before - vignettes about the various occupants of a single hotel room - but I was still intrigued by this movie. The setting is a hotel in a cosmopolitan Canadian city. The stories - set in 1921, 1933, 1945, 1953, 1968, the late '80s to early '90s, and the turn of the millennium - do not follow each other in chronological order but are broken into short scenes and jumbled together in a creative if sometimes confusing (especially early on) manner.
As the box cover says, there are four lost souls, three love stories and one murder, the murder being part of one of the love stories. Some characters are easier to sympathize with than others. I really felt drawn to the sad Asian woman in an arranged marriage in the Depression era. I also rooted for the eccentric cuckold seeking his wife with the aid of a hotel detective in the noirish '50s story.
Mia Kirshner is sweetly seductive as the prostitute who agrees to annual liaisons with a besotted customer. Unlike the other stories, this piece allows for a passage of time within the story as we see the two meet for brief occasions over the next few years.
Other characters left me cold, like the two gay war veterans who betray one's fiance to satisfy their own sexual urges. Then there are the two millennial youths planning what turns out to be a suicide pact. The girl in this case was selfish and dishonest, yet the ending is supposed to be some magical completion of a circle. It was an unsatisfying ending.

Description
Rodri and Rico are two cousins unalike in every way except for a shared contempt for their parents' values and a deep connection to their free spirited grandfather, Rodrigo. When Rodrigo dies unexpectedly, his yuppie children are more interested in quibbling about their inheritance than in fulfilling his last request. Determined to make things right, Rodri and Roco kidnap their grandfather's ashes and set off for sunny Acapulco in a vintage Mercedes. On the way, they learn about life and friendship and realize that their grandfather was more free-spirited than they could have imagined.
Customer Reviews:
Yet another excellent movie from Mexico..........2007-04-20
I am continually impressed by movies from Mexico. These movies are spun around very simple close-to-life stories, but superlative acting, cinematography, background score and direction makes them extremely interesting, intriguing, thought-provoking and entertaining.
The story starts with Grandpa Rodrigo's birthday and a reluctant gathering of family members. His daughter, two sons and two diagonally opposite cousins (Roco & Rodrigo). The tense & volatile atmosphere at the dinner table quickly erupts into a heated dialog (over Grandpa Rodrigo's son's marriage to a young & demure girl). Predictably, Grandpa Rodrigo has a massive heart-attack and he passes away. Without much delay, his will is read and the inheritance distributed. Amidst all the materialistic distribution, nobody seems to pay much attention to Grandpa's wish of his ashes being submerged at sea in Acapulco. For days, his ashes lay in a golden urn.
Flustered by everyone's nonchalant behavior, Roco grabs the urn and starts heading towards Acapulco in a vintage Mercedes. The vintage, however, is an inheritance gift to Rodrigo Jr. (his cousin). In an effort to save his inheritance, Rodrigo joins Roco in a sudden trip to Acapulco. Their personal differences come into play and despite much elbowing and snapping at each other, they make it to Acapulco. However, their mutual respect for Grandpa Rodrigo brings the cousins closer to one another. They continue to snap at each other, but (now) with an affectionate and brotherly air. Roco meets Maria (the very beautiful -- Ana de la Reguera) and without much delay, falls for her. The cousins spend a couple of days in Acapulco contemplating the strategy for submerging the ashes, clubbing, and growing up. However, on the planned submersion day, they realize that Maria is the daughter of Grandpa Rodrigo (watch the movie to see all the events). Maria is now Roco's aunt.
Finally, after a series of emotional incidents they manage to submerge the ashes. The subtle message is that life sometimes takes sharp turns, throws stuff at you and you have to grow up fast. However, we the humans, the recipients of the eternally free spirit must continue to love people around us (dead or alive) and ourselves. This is true freedom!
Really great fun!.......2007-03-27
I picked this up in VHS at a video store for 99 cents, figured it would be an okay piece of entertainment. Boy, was I surprised! This is an excellent bit of comedy, beautifully acted, wonderfully edited, totally enjoyable entertainment! The dysfunctional family dynamics are hysterical, the young people are attractive and funny, the plot twists are very unexpected, and it's simply beautifully done. Don't miss this one!
Hilarious and light hearted........2007-01-01
This movie made me homesick. Although not from Mexico, it reminded me alot of the times I lived there and some of the people I met. The spinning of the urn like a roulette wheel gave me a real chuckle. Also gives a view into the folks that live in Mexico City and it was nice to see Acapulco from the beach level. A good companion to Todo el Poder and El Segundo Aire.
A nice film from director Juan Carlos de Llaca.......2006-07-18
"Por la libre" deserves a viewing because of all the elements that the director, Mr. LLaca brought together to this film. Even though it's a pretty light movie, you can take in consideration many good stuff about this one. First, the story is quite original. Second, the characters are indifferent from each other. Third, the acting is great by a very believable Osvaldo Benavides, and a surprising hit acting by Rodrigo Cachero, and of course, Ana de la Reguera, as a Hotel owner's daughter, whom also did a nice job in her role.
`Por la libre' is a free spirit comedy about family relationships and at some point, how the youth is and behaves in Mexico, the film deals with what happens in a lot of families after a strong older member of it, in this case, the grandfather, dies suddenly. The problems lie on carrying out the wishes of the patriarch is made clear right after the will is read. There is a bank account the old man has left to a friend who leaves in Acapulco. His wish is to be cremated and have the ashes scattered in the waters of that scenic city by the Pacific, where he would have gone to reside, had he lived long enough. Mr. LLaca is to be congratulated for getting good performances out of the three principals.
If you're looking for some other good Mexican films, try `Amores Perros' or `Y tu mama tambien,' these two films are very strong, profound, and full of meanings.
Reminds me of my road trip to acapulco!.......2005-05-30
Although I don't consider this a 5 star movie and I could name several mexican films off hand that have better plots and actors; this movie is pretty fun and memorable enough to want to watch it every now and then. Two cousins that don't really get along take a road trip to acapulco to try to get their recently passed away grandfather's ashes into the ocean. They run into romance, trouble, and the movie gives a laughable surprise towards the end. Good movie,,not Oscar material but definitely a movie worthy of your dvd library and one that you will probably want to watch once in a blue moon.

Sarah (Murphy) is a happy-go-lucky rich girl whose meddling family is as snobbish as it is wealthy. Tom (Kutcher) is a hope-I-get-lucky party guy who prefers sports bars over fancy cars. But opposites attract sidesplitting fun when these two young newlyweds embark on their perfectly-planned European honeymoon with disastrous-and hilarious-results!
