It's hard to believe Ridley Scott's handsome epic won't become the cinematic touchstone of the Crusades for years to come. Kingdom of Heaven is greater than the sum of its parts, delivering a vital, mostly engrossing tale following Balian (Orlando Bloom), a lonely French blacksmith who discovers he's a noble heir and takes his father's (Liam Neeson) place in the center of the universe circa 1184: Jerusalem. Here, grand battles and backdoor politics are key as Scott and first-time screenwriter William Monahan fashion an excellent storyline to tackle the centuries-long conflict. Two forward-thinking kings, Baldwin (Edward Norton in an uncredited yet substantial role) and Saladin (Ghassan Massoud), hold an uneasy truce between Christians (who hold the city) and Muslims while factions champ at the bit for blood. There are good and evildoers on both sides, with the Knights Templar taking the brunt of the blame; Balian plans to find his soul while protecting Baldwin and the people. The look of the film, as nearly everything is from Scott, is impressive: his CGI-infused battle scenes rival the LOTR series and, with cinematographer John Mathieson, create postcard beauty with snowy French forests and the vast desert (filmed in Morocco and Spain). An excellent supporting cast, including Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and David Thewlis, also help make the head and heart of the film work. Many critics pointed out that Bloom doesn't have the gravitas of Russell Crowe in the lead (then again, who does?), but it's the underdeveloped character and not the actor that hurts the film and impacts its power. Balian isn't given much more to do than be sullen and give an occasional big speech, alongside his perplexing abilities for warfare tactics and his wandering moral compass (whose sole purpose seems to be to put a love scene in the movie). Note: all the major characters except Neeson's are based on fact, but many are heavily fictionalized. --Doug Thomas

    On the DVD
The Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut is truly a DVD set of biblical proportions. If you are familiar with Ridley Scott's excellent, albeit massive, extended DVD sets for Gladiator and Black Hawk Down, you have a pretty good idea of what you are in for with this set. The biggest difference--unlike the Gladiator Director's Cut, which had some nice new scenes that really didn't add much to the film--is that this cut of Kingdom of Heaven is a drastic improvement over the theatrical release. This extensive 194-minute version brings the film back to Scott's original vision, maintaining an impressive balance of history, plot, and believable period reenactments and battle scenes. The best way to describe the improvements on the extended version is the film is now able to breathe a bit more, it's less choppy, and it has stronger character development. In addition to the extended scenes (which now span two discs in a clunky Road Show presentation), there is an exhaustive three-hour, six-part documentary detailing every aspect of filmmaking from the development of the "idea" through post-production and release. Also included are three feature-length commentary tracks, the best being the first with Ridley Scott, writer William Monahan, and actor Orlando Bloom. Included on the original release but missing from this set are the A&E/History Channel documentaries, the theatrical cut of the film, and "The Pilgrim's Guide," the fantastic text commentary which pointed out the historical anecdotes as the film played. Fans of the film and completists will probably want to hold onto both versions. However, those picking up Kingdom of Heaven for the first time need only to look to this definitive version. --Rob Bracco

Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra star in this visually stunning metaphysical tale of life after death. Neurologist Chris and artist Annie had the perfect life until they lost their children in an auto accident; they're just starting to recover when Chris meets an untimely death himself. He's met by a messenger named Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and taken to his own personal afterlife--a freshly drawn world reminiscent of Annie's own artwork, still dripping and wet with paint. Meanwhile a depressed Annie takes her own life, compelling Chris to traverse heaven and hell to save Annie from an eternity of despair.

The multitextured visuals seem to have been created from a lost fairy tale. Heaven recalls the landscape paintings of Thomas Cole and Renaissance architecture complete with floating cherubs, while hell is a massive shipwreck, an upside-down cathedral overgrown with thorns and a sea of groaning faces popping out of the ground (one of those faces is German director Werner Herzog). Williams is the perfect actor to play against the imaginative computer-generated imagery--he himself is a human special effect. But the lack of chemistry between Williams and Sciorra is painfully apparent, and the flashback plot structure flattens the story's impact despite its deeply felt examinations of the heart and the spirit. Still, there's no denying Eugenio Zanetti's triumphant production design and the Oscar-winning special effects, which create a fully formed universe that is at once beautiful, eerie, and a unique example of movie magic. --Shannon Gee

Considered by many to represent a low point in Steven Spielberg's career, 1990's Always did suggest something of a temporary drift in the director's sensibility. A remake of the classic Spencer Tracy film A Guy Named Joe, Always stars Richard Dreyfuss as a Forest Service pilot who takes great risks with his own life to douse wildfires from a plane. After promising his frightened fiancée (Holly Hunter) to keep his feet on the ground and go into teaching, Dreyfuss's character is killed during one last flight. But his spirit wanders restlessly, hopelessly attached to and possessive of Hunter, who can't see or hear him. Then the real conflict begins: a trainee pilot (Brad Johnson), a likable doofus, begins wooing a not-unappreciative Hunter--and it becomes Dreyfuss's heavenly mandate to accept, and even assist in, their budding romance. The trouble with the film is a certain airlessness, a hyper-inventiveness in every scene and sequence that screams of Spielberg's self-education in Hollywood classicism. Unlike the masters he is constantly quoting and emulating in Always, he forgets to back off and let the movie breathe on its own sometimes, which would better serve his clockwork orchestration of suspense and comedy elsewhere. Still, there are lovely passages in this film, such as the unforgettable look on Dreyfuss's face a half-second before fate claims him. John Goodman contributes good supporting work, and Audrey Hepburn makes her final screen appearance as an angel. --Tom Keogh

          5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-06-21

I enjoyed the theatrical version but found it lacking. Now that I have had the oppertunity to watch the directors cut it is one of my favorite films. Most of what I would say about it has been commented on repeatedly so I will stick to a few things. 1) No, the movie is not historically accurate, but unless it has 'documentary' stamped across it, who would rationally have expected it to be? 2) All of the actors did a very impressive job 3)Did anyone else wonder how the heck some backwoods blacksmith was able to do such an excellent job defending Jerusalem? (and I know you did, all sorts of people have complained about this in their reviews - thats one of the ways you can tell who actually saw the extended edition from the ones who are just whining) Wonder no more! That and many other important details are explained in the 80 odd minutes that have been added back in. Pay close attention to the begining. Most definitely worth the time to see.

          2 out of 5 stars To be honest . . ........2007-06-20

This film is HORRIBLY inaccurate, historically. It is, in fact, a "nachtmare." The acting isn't bad, and some of the action scenes, as far as they are *just* action scenes, are good. However, the historical inaccuracy of the film is just something I cannot get around. If you like this film, I do not wish to insult you - just please, please, please . . . do NOT think this is in any way actual history, or any sort of fair to middling approximation thereof.

          5 out of 5 stars A Summer Action Flick With A Brain.......2007-06-19

The action never stops and it's just tons of fun. The special effects are insane. It's a summer action flick with a brain.

          5 out of 5 stars absolutely fabulous!.......2007-06-18

This movie was good as the theatrical cut, but even better as the director's edition! Everyone should see it.

4 out of 5 stars 3.7 Stars From Me. This movie has left me thinking "what?".......2007-06-16

I've watched this movie a total of three times and each time I was left slightly confused. For example, how did Orlando become such a great fighter and know so many military tactics from being a blacksmith his whole life? Throughout the movie various people where telling Orlando to "protect the people" yet they were slaughtering each other. For example, his father was supposed to hand over Orlando to the officers who came after Orlando fled his home town. Yet his father denied and risked the lives of his loyal companions and himself because he "did not like the way they asked for him". Come on, how is that protecting or abiding by the law? I'm ashamed of the "Christians" crusades actions in those days. What happened to the king? In the movie he was last shown riding a donkey, so did they kill him? There is too much to assume in this movie.

The acting was good, definitely not great. Orlando did his best in the movie and I really love his "father" as an actor but in casting, you'd think they would get father/son actors to look at least a bit more alike?? Maybe it's just me but it kinda throws off the movie. I can barely understand what the "Queen" is saying; I think the role might have been better if given to another actress. I don't understand why she cut off all her hair before she even denied her title or officially lost the battle of Jerusalem. There really wasn't any real bond between Orlando and her.

I liked the story and understand the effect the director wanted to go with this film but it is just lacking something! I don't know if the editing was to blame for scenes that might have been cut off which explained the plot and details more fully. Whatever the case, I enjoyed watching Troy and a handful of other movies much more than this.

The millennial edition of TV's longest-running family drama gets off to a stressful start when Eric Camden (Stephen Collins) has a heart attack. It turns out to be a mild one, but sets the tone for much of the season. From now on, the minister and father of seven is going to try to take things easier. Suffice to say, the new touchy-feely dad drives the other Camdens crazy, but they do their best to support his recovery. Meanwhile, college sophomore Matt (Barry Watson) finally flies the coop and gets an apartment with family friend John (Chaz Lamar Shepherd, who becomes a regular cast member) and continues to see girlfriend Shana (Maureen Flannigan). Other developments include a spiky 'do for 13-year-old Simon (David Gallagher), community service for Mary (Jessica Biel) due to vandalism ("Sin and Expiation"), and a disappointing diagnosis for Annie's father ("Forget Me Not"). That leaves Lucy (Beverley Mitchell), who decides what to do with her life, Ruthie (Mackenzie Rosman), who gets her first boyfriend, and the twins (Myrinda and Zachary Brino), who celebrate birthday number one. The show also widens its scope to tackle concerns outside the home, like the treatment of women in Afghanistan ("Yak Sada") and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II ("Dirty Laundry").

As with previous years, season four ends with some surprises. In this case, Matt and Mary make crucial decisions about their futures. Eric and Annie (Catherine Hicks) are particularly upset by Mary's choice, so much so that touchy-feely dad (briefly) becomes furious dad. Guest stars include Soul Food's Irma P. Hall ("All by Myself"), Moonlighting's Allyce Beasley ("Liar, Liar"), and 'N Sync's Lance Bass ("Who Do You Trust"). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Based on the bestseller by Mitch Albom (Tuesdays With Morrie), The Five People You Meet in Heaven takes up where It's A Wonderful Life left off. In the Capra classic, George Bailey gets a vision of life without him. In this Hallmark Hall of Fame production, Eddie (Jon Voight), an amusement park maintenance man and war veteran, ends up in Heaven after an accident takes his life. There he meets five people from his past: the Blue Man (Jeff Richards), the Captain (Michael Imperioli), Marguerite (Dagmara Dominczyk), Ruby (Ellen Burstyn), and Tala (Nicaela and Shelbie Weigel). Each shows him how he impacted their life or they his--and not always for the better. (In these flashbacks, Callahan Brebner and Steven Grayhm play the young Eddie.) The point may seem simplistic--everyone is connected--but The Five People You Meet in Heaven finds a unique and engaging way to make it. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Bad romantic comedies make you scoff at their absurdity; good ones make you wish your life was that absurd. Just Like Heaven is just smart and likable enough to trigger that wishing. David (Mark Ruffalo, Collateral, You Can Count On Me) finds an amazing apartment in San Francisco--only to discover it's haunted by the spirit of the previous tenant, an overachieving doctor named Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde, Election). There's something not quite right about Elizabeth's afterlife; against his better judgement, David agrees to help her investigate her life...but finds himself digging into his own as well. The plot takes a twist that some viewers will see coming, but Just Like Heaven doesn't rely on the surprise alone; the revelation takes the story in a new and just as entertaining direction. Witherspoon and Ruffalo are two of the best romantic leads around, but the surprise is how well their contrasting flavors (perky and moody, respectively) mesh, creating a sparky, engaging chemistry. Also featuring Dina Waters (Freaky Friday), Donal Logue (The Tao of Steve), Ben Shenkman (Angels in America), and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). Crisply directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls), who carefully keeps the supernatural from getting silly and the romance from getting gooey. --Bret Fetzer

For two seasons, there was one set of parents and five children. During 7th Heaven's third, Annie (Catherine Hicks) gives birth to a sixth…and a seventh. That's right--the same year she and husband Eric (Stephen Collins) celebrate their 20th anniversary--Annie has twins. As for the other kids: Matt (Barry Watson) tries living off campus, but returns home when things don't work out. Mary (Jessica Biel) gets her driver's license, Lucy (Beverley Mitchell) gets a boyfriend, Simon (David Gallagher) gets a girlfriend, and Ruthie (Mackenzie Rosman) remains the most precocious member of the Camden household.

Since 7th Heaven is an issue-oriented show and since the Camden brood are basically good, it's up to their friends and neighbors to generate the bulk of the trouble. This season's problems include underage drinking ("Drunk Like Me"), cutting ("Cutters"), child abuse ("The Legacy"), and infidelity ("We the People"). Granted, the Camden kids aren't perfect--Mary does skip one class and Matt handles an ex-girlfriend's engagement poorly--but they make most others look like hooligans in comparison. Third year guest stars include Ray Walston ("Home of the Brave"), Tim Conway and Ruth Buzzi ("Here Comes Santa Claus"), Phyllis Diller ("Nobody Knows..."), and future big screen stars Alison Lohman (White Oleander) and Michael Peña (World Trade Center), who both appear in "Let's Talk About Sex." Ed Begley Jr. also drops by a few times as the doctor who delivered Matt 19 years ago, returns to deliver twin brothers Sam and David, and woos a certain member of the extended Camden clan. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Morals, Lessons, and a family focused on God... how can you go wrong. It's great to watch the kids grow up all over again on these DVD's.

3 out of 5 stars Parental Guidance necessary for younger viewers.......2007-04-27

I like the idea the show is trying to depict but is too melodramatic, children are rude with parents and too much dating. Much prefer Little House on the Prairie and The Walton's.

Albert Brooks proves there's laughs after death with this almost heavenly comedy--almost heaven as in Judgment City, where recently perished Daniel Miller (Brooks) learns whether he is worthy of advancing to a higher plane of existence or will be sent back to earth for another incarnation.

His fate will be determined in a very special trial, during which scenes from his life are replayed on a giant screen. "Isn't it realistic?" a judge asks. "It makes some people nauseous." While the steely prosecutor (Lee Grant) will try to prove that Daniel failed in life to face his fears and insecurities, his glad-handing, reassuring defender (Rip Torn) will argue on behalf of this hapless "little brain" (a Judgment City term for residents of earth).

As Woody Allen did for the future in Sleeper, so does Brooks create an original vision of the afterlife. In Judgment City, white-robed residents can eat as much as they want without guilt or fear of gaining weight. They can also visit the Past Lives Pavilion, where they are greeted by a hologram of--who else--Shirley MacLaine.

Daniel finds himself touched by an angel. Meryl Streep gives an enchanting performance as Julia, whose exemplary life is in stark contrast to his. During her trial, the court watches in rapture as she saves not only children, but a cat from a burning building.

Daniel and Julia are a match made in Judgment City, but first Daniel must summon up the courage to express his true feelings for her, or she will surely advance without him.

Defending Your Life is Brooks's most ambitious film and, with Mother, his most accessible. --Donald Liebenson
