In the tradition of meet-cute road films, Overnight Delivery finds two unlikely companions who make a mad dash to stop an overnight delivery. Luminous Reese Witherspoon plays Ivy Miller, an ambitious, hard-working college gal who makes extra money by "flash dancing" at a local joint. Ivy meets devastated Wyatt Trips (Paul Rudd), who believes his girlfriend, Kim, who attends college in the South, is cheating on him. Ivy helps Wyatt write an insulting break-up letter, but when a misunderstanding is revealed, Wyatt and Ivy scramble to stop delivery. This film shares more than a few similarities with 1999's higher-profile Forces of Nature, and while it's no doubt fluffy, and its setups derivative, Witherspoon and Rudd are very likeable. One of the film's notably sweet scenes is between Ivy and a local sheriff, who's fingerprinting her after the duo has been arrested. Overnight Delivery was originally written by the uncredited Kevin Smith, who penned the far hipper Chasing Amy. The film still bears some of Smith's trademark dialogue, even though the tone and look are far removed from his previous efforts. Larry Drake does a fine job as the determined delivery guy. --N.F. Mendoza

Description

When college guy thinks his highschool sweetheart is cheating on him, he and another girl send her the world's most disgusting poison-pen letter...via overnight delivery.

I saw this years ago and could not remember the name. It was great to find it again. I still could not stop laughing

3 out of 5 stars Overnight Delivery.......2007-01-09

This is a twisted love story, you don't know who you want to pull for the guy or the girl.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good Movie.......2006-01-04

I first caught this movie on Late night cable somewhere. Wouldn't have kept it on but Reese Witherspoon was in it. The more I watched, the more I enjoyed it. Since then I have purchased the movie and watch it every so often, usually with friends who haven't seen it. They too find it's quirky humor addicting. Amazing the similarities between this and another cross country "road trip". I will always prefer this, the original

2 out of 5 stars This movie......stinks.......2004-10-17

I am really wondering about the people who have reviewed this and gave it such good ratings.Ive been looking at their other reviews trying to understand what it is they like. Because this movie STINKS!

Im a huge Reese Witherspoon fan and I like Paul Rudd so I rented this movie and thought it would be good. Oh boy I was wrong. The charachters are over the top and the story is just cheesy. Im all for a good fun, romantic comedy. I like "Win a date with Tad Hamilton" but this is just awful.

Reese plays a stripper (somehow it just doesnt work)who helps the dorky hopeless Rudd dump then win back his girlfriend. All the time there is a package to stop hence the name "Overnight Delivery".

The story could have worked but it just doesnt. The premise is good and there are parts that are somewhat ammusing but overall it sucks.

I would reccomend this movie to anyone who liked the Sarah Michelle Gellar movie "Simply Irresistable". If you happened to like that movie with the magical little crab. If you disliked it as I did then stay away.

5 out of 5 stars The actors make this one great!.......2004-09-06

Let's just forget that "Road Trip" completely ripped-off this film and focus on the fact that the choice of actors and the way they do thier job makes this movie just as freakin funny as any Bill Murray movie. Pay attention to the way they say their lines and how they interact with each other--you'll laugh your butt off! This is a great movie, any price you pay for it will be worth the viewing, 100% !

Description

Hilarious and Horrifying at the same time, this is a Rags to Riches story about of Boston Bartender Troy Duffy who's script "BoonDock Saints" made him an overnight success and failure… This epitomizes the word JERK like no other could. The once darling of Miramax head, Harvey Weinstein, Duffy does great job of burning bridges with everyone and anyone in Hollywood. This should be Film 101 of how not to act in the film business. You won't believe it until you see for yourself.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hollywood is full of A-holes, and they didn't want one more........2007-05-15

Over the course of three viewings I have finally seen this entire film.

The first time I started watching this film it was about the halfway point. I caught it just when things were starting to roll for the boys in the band. It was intriguing to see how arrogant and disrespectful Troy was to his band mates and friends. Yet they tolerated his abuse, and plodded on, thinking that there was going to be a big payday on the horizon that would make it all worth it. Eventually, I pieced the rest of the film together over two more viewings, and as one piece it's a doozy.

First off, I am so glad someone decided to put a camera on this whole situation. It's seems crazy at times to think that Troy Duffy would say and do all that he did with a camera on him, on what seems like an around the clock basis. I don't know about you, but I have this little voice in the back of my head that tells me not to do things, and when I am on video, that voice gets even louder. Whoever was taping Troy had to have been saying to himself, "one day, this is going to be worth it."

This film goes up and down, over and over. One minute Troy is nice to everybody, he's happy, they're getting deals made, or so they think. Then a hurdle is overcome, they celebrate, the deal falls through, and Troy goes ballistic on everyone within arms reach. Rinse, Repeat.

I'm willing to bet that Troy has been in quite a few fist fights in his life. There is no way a person can walk around being that proud of themselves, despite not being a very good person, and not find a few guys willing to throw haymakers at him.

I loved how this movie brought to light how crazy the lust for fame and fortune can make people. The pursuit of fame and fortune drove Troy to be a major pain in the you know what for lots of people. It also drove his band mates to tolerate his behavior. I love this movie, it's tragic and funny, it's sad and true and realistic, but I don't feel a bit downtrodden when I watch it. Even though the film doesn't show anyone but Troy acting like an obvious idiot, (he kinda takes the cake for being an idiot), I don't feel bad for them at all. The band must have needed him much more than Troy needed the band. Otherwise they would have dumped Troy just as quickly as everyone else did.

1 out of 5 stars No D'Onofrio here!.......2007-05-12

If anyone is considering buying this for it's Vincent D'Onofrio content, don't waste your money. He's in it for all of 3 seconds, by virture of the fact he's in a bar where the odious film maker happens to be. A complete waste of time and it has NO place in any list of the work of VDO. If there was a minus-star rating, that's what I'd give it.

5 out of 5 stars A great example of emotional and accurate perspective........2007-01-24

The directors of this documentary have every reason to make this film and take out all of the good things that Troy Duffy, did for them, but they didn't. They show him in his confident, no frills best to show just how disappointing and sad it is that he never had an ounce of humility in his body. You see Duffy making great music, you see Duffy getting along famously with his friends, you see him making his one claim to fame, Boondock Saints (which isn't a work of genius in anyone's mind, but entertaining on a basic level). What Troy would have you believe and what the filmmakers don't even have to argue for is right here in the film. You have the egomaniac not taking responsibility for his own actions, being tactless when confronted, purposely ruining relationships he started long ago. You see some of this come out before he gets the contract and you see that people just shut up because they believe in him, and don't want to make him anymore mad than he is. Then, he takes over and doesn't allow anyone else collaborate about how things are going to work out (including the filmmakers). He tells them not to mess up and then he doesn't allow them to. There's no way that Troy Duffy was made to look bad by means of editing. Look at the scene near the end when his brother and the rest of the band have meeting. It follows these things: Troy lost all of his initial contracts for the band, movie, bar, etc., he makes the movie and takes it to the festival only to get scant distribution that doesn't make the money back. They get a record contract and release it, but it doesn't sell. The band comes to him after the movie doesn't get distribution to tell him his focus must now be on the band and that they don't like the way he treats them and should change his ways, they say in the most loving way possible, and he doesn't listen to them. He just doesn't listen...that's what this movie is about: you need to listen to others, they aren't worthless.

4 out of 5 stars Billy Connolly Cameo a Highlight.......2006-09-08

He's pretty gross, but something got cut out of the movie, something that might have given it some balance. As it stands you just get bored with seeing Troy Duffy attack anyone who dares criticize him. Twice, three times, four times, that would have been enough to establish his character as a sociopath. But directors Montana and Smith just play it over and over again, maybe forty-five times. Enough! I guess working with Troy didn't teach them anything about restraint.

Naturally the documentary makes me curious to see BOONDOCK SAINTS. Most of the actors glimpsed in the movie, hanging out at Duffy's bar and grill, seem to be auditioning, like Patrick Swayze, a legend in Hollywood but a man who badly needs a shot of adrenaline career-wise. When it comes to actually making the film, BOONDOCK SAINTS behind the scenes footage shows us more extended interviews with Willem Dafoe and with Scotland's Billy Connolly, who comes across as an honestly swell guy, not to mention a living legend, who must have been either momentarily blinded to Troy's faults, or he's big enough to forgive him.

Yes, life in Hollywood is surreal, like something Salvador Dali and Bunuel cooked up together on a slow Spanish afternoon. And Harvey Weinstein seems like slime. But Troy, did you have to be so condescending to every human being on planet earth? Your mom should have told you, when you were a little boy, that you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar. Watching OVERNIGHT leaves you with a headache but I can't imagine anyone not profiting from watching at least 20 minutes of it.

2 out of 5 stars A Biased Portrait of Self-destruction.......2006-08-03

I don't agree with all those reviewers so eager to applaud the downfall of a "blowhard."

The filmmakers (his former friends) were clearly angry and out to make this man the biggest of *ssholes onscreen. I, in fact, felt very uncomfortable and depressed watching scene after scene depicting his egomaniacal fits and raging outbursts. You mean, there was NEVER a time when he was decent? How did he ever manage to maintain friends in his life? You mean he had NO good qualities? EVER? Hmm, I don't buy it.

This is the problem with nonfiction works, in general, which are highly susceptible to manipulation and "being shaped" via the process of editing. Just follow anyone over a period of months and you'll have enough raw material to make anyone out to be a monster. Crop out the good stuff, and leave in the bad; then pile up the bad: scene after scene of the subject being neurotic and fearful and losing control. Hey, every human being on earth has at one time or other behaved very badly. In the artworld, it happens more than you think. There's a basic insecurity driving all artists and writers and filmmakers. And artists in general are subject to failure and contempt and ridicule on a daily basis. All of 'em are a bit crazy, is what I'm saying. That's just the truth. Some folks are just better at hiding their "illness" than others.

If you've read the famous Vanity Fair article on Harvey Weinstein and Miramax, which depicted him as a true monster, continually threatening people with physical violence and casually throwing objects (like ashtrays) at his executives, you might decide to shift some of blame for this man's project, and his life, crashing and burning as it did, on him as well. Talk about a beast. It made me sick to see Harvey Weinstein make all these empty promises -- even going so far as to "buy the bar" for him -- and then just leave the man to hang in the wind, delivering on NONE of his promises. And blocking all future attempts by the filmmaker to make a go of it. What a bully, man. I'd like to see a documentary on him! In fact, that could be the title: BULLY.

Unlike other reviewers here, I felt no particular joy seeing this man's hope and dreams systematically crushed, one by one. It's a miracle he didn't lose his mind. But then I guess he did.

The whole documentary was very depressing and sad and self-serving, I thought. And the filmmakers have now gone on to produce other work, flat-leaving their former friend, which is okay I guess (since they're "the good ones") and only goes to prove that everyone has a selfish agenda.

There's an unpleasant quality that human beings have: that of always seeking out an external "villain" -- which is in effect a projection of the nastiest aspects of themselves. The *ssholes are "out there," right? We're always the good ones, the deserving ones. Uh, wrong. Hate to break the news, but we're all culpable; we're all sinners. So just be thankful that no one makes a documentary on YOU!

3 out of 5 stars poor dvd quality.......2006-08-15

The information contained in this is quite useful if you wish to learn imrovisation yechniques. True it doesn't teach you chords, keys or scales but no one getting this wants to learn all that anyway. ( Plus learning chords is easy anyway.) The problem I have is with the dvd itself. The quality is somewhat poor and it seems that they just copied directly from the vcr tape, which I already had. There are no chapters or scene selections so you have to fast forward and reverse to what you want to see just like a vcr tape. Granted you can "mark" the spots but only if you plan on leaving the dvd in the player. That is my only complaint since I had hoped I could just select a section and go directly to it to review. As this can't be done the dvd is no better than a vcr tape.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly conceived. .......2006-02-07

This video is worthless for purposes of teaching you how to play the piano. It does not teach you how to read music. It does not teach you the 7 notes of the keyboard. It does not show you how to play any tunes. What does it do? It shows you how to play notes sequentially up and down the keyboard (as if you need a video to show you how to do that), and refers to the keys by numbers; whereas the rest of the world refers to the keys of a piano by the letters A to G. Very poorly conceived approach.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack!!!!.......2004-12-25

Hey, the movie's ok, but the soundtrack is KILLER! Obviously talented musicians at work. Great songwriting, awesome chops, and the keyboard parts are especially inventive and inspiring. Too bad the people who made the film couldn't get those guys to cover Who Do You Think You Are instead of using the mediocre original . . .

And that guy from Brooklyn is right -- spectacular drumming!

Any chance of a soundtrack CD? I'd buy that in a second!

5 out of 5 stars Steller drumming on the sountrack........2002-12-04

I haven't really been able to get through the whole filmýbut I'm sure it's great. I wasn't able to see the premierýeven though I played on the sountrack. There was such a huge crew that they just probably couldn't make room for someone as lowly as me. Watch the movie and pay close attention to the amazing drumming going on....The rest of the film is okay too I heard.
