Editorial Review:
Description
English tabloid legend Koo Stark stars in this outlandish adaptation of the infamous Marquis de Sade's Justine, the Misfortunes of Virtue. Young Justine's chosen path of goodness is thwarted at every turn, thanks to an escalating series of dark encounters with sexual depravity and Sadean excess while her sister Juliette chooses a path of debauchery and finds only happiness. Filled with ghoulish rituals and S&M excess, this late-night cable favorite finally comes to DVD with a new digital master created directly from original archival materials.

Customer Reviews:
I have not read the book....AND I AM GLAD!!!.......2007-06-18
Excellent..superb..well acted..well scripted..dark and brooding......I could go on and on! We review FILMS here at Amazon...not the book from which the film came! As a film, Patricia Rozema's adaptation of Jane Austen's MANSFIELD PARK stands on it's own as a stinging, satirical view of the life and times of one Fanny Price in 1806 England. All that is Austen, the "advantageous alliances" that are made through marriage, scandals that could kill a family's reputation, the pecking order of sons for inheritance, and the heart as the moral compass and guide are all here, and brought to the screen with great effect infused with a little bit of naughtiness and innuendo. This retelling of MANSFIELD PARK is so interesting and wonderfully reconceived that it far outweighs the BBC version for it's fresh and new characterizations of Fanny and the Bertrams and the Crawfords.
What I really like about this MANSFIELD PARK is Rozema's clever weaving of the English Slave Trade into the fiber of the film. No doubt this WAS THE hot topic of the time as in 1807 the trade of the Middle Passage WAS abolished in England.(See the current film AMAZING GRACE)Yes,people who sought their fortunes in it DID turn "to tobacco",which was the trade simply continued in America!!!
As far as performances...they are OUTSTANDING. Harold Pinter as Sir Thomas was played with great complexity and the late Sheila Gish as Fanny's Aunt is one of the best comedic turns yet for an Austen adaptation!
Lesley Barber's soundtrack is lush, romantic and also full of witty motifs to propel the action.
This MANSFIELD PARK is full of fine direction, sets, costumes and modern sensibility that makes the timeless Austen all the more compelling. The film never lags and is quite clever. 5******'s for Rozema's Austen!
If You Don't Mind a little Affection between Cousins.......2007-05-24
I am always challenged in finding any kind of romance in the characters of Mansfield Park. They are cousins. Back in Ms. Austen's day, this was cool. To me, it is SO not.
This telling of the story, however, is really fun. I love the dramatic pauses at the end. I love the nasty Mrs. Norris. I love the artful Crawfords and the artless Edmund. Most of all, I LOVE Fanny, the smart creative Fanny that is presented in this movie. She totally makes the movie.

Most enjoyable.......2007-05-15
Most Janeites will disregard this film as not being true to the novel and claim the actors are too "pretty." I however, think this film is strong enough to stand on it's own without having to be completely true to the original. The characters are strong, the acting honest and raw, and Fanny is very funny, in a very Jane Austenesque subtle, ironic way. I am glad to own it.
Great for romantic movie lovers, not so good for Austen purists.......2007-05-12
I wouldn't call myself an Austen purist, but I definitely compare the books with the movies I watch. For purists of Jane Austen's novel, this movie really tears the book apart substituting characters and cutting some out completely. But as a movie, Mansfield Park is one of my favorites. Most of the more recent Jane Austen adaptations really stole my heart in the movie category and this one was no exception. The heart of Jane Austen's story is still there and, as we all know, no one can write about love and romance quite like Jane Austen.
So purists: Beware! Dramatic and Romantic movie lovers: Check this one out!
It is difficult to put Austen's work to film... .......2007-05-11
I always anticipate the difficulty of a relatively short film (2 hours or under) being able to fully bring to life the characters of ANY complex and beloved novel. Aside from maybe the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, very few movies who aspire to bring Jane Austen's novels to life ever do. That being said. This movie is a piece of art in its own right, and also should be seen as such. I enjoyed this film. And while it did take many liberties, I still feel it was a genuinely well done movie. I LOVE Jane Austen's novels, for she was a woman entrenched in her time but also ahead of her time. I don't think she would take her stories to be sacrosanct, as many of her admirers and critics do. I enjoyed this cast and what the director did with the story. I was endeared to this Mansfield Park and the world that was created in it.

Writer/director Ol Parker's debut takes its title from "Happy Together" by the Turtles ("Imagine me and you / and you and me") and its inspiration from the romantic comedies of Richard Curtis (Love Actually). There's a twist. Flower shop owner Luce (Lena Headey, The Brothers Grimm) is gay. Newlywed Rachel (a convincingly UK-accented Piper Perabo, Lost and Delirious) is straight. The two meet at Rachel's wedding--Luce designed the floral arrangements--and feel an instant connection. Rachel brushes it off. After all, the charming Heck (Matthew Goode, Match Point) was her best friend long before he became her husband. Shortly after the ceremony, however, she begins to feel as if something is missing. She starts making excuses to see Luce. First it's to thank her for the flowers, then it's to invite her to dinner with Heck and their on-the-make pal Cooper (a hilarious Darren Boyd)...who's crushed when he discovers that Luce prefers women. Rachel, meanwhile, finds married life pleasant enough, but only really feels alive when she's with Luce. It's tricky, because she loves Heck and doesn't want to hurt his feelings, so she and Luce decide to stop seeing each other. But the bond between the two is too powerful for either to resist. What it may lack in originality, Imagine Me & You makes up for in an enchanting soundtrack and sensitive performances from its three likable leads. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Piper Perabo lights up the screen as Rachel, a blushing bride whose perfect nuptials take a surprising turn at the altar. An innocent glance between Rachel and an unexpected wedding guest is all it takes to spark a 'love at first sight' romance with a surprising twist -- the object of Rachel's affection is a smart and sensuous... woman! Their shocking romance causes quite a stir amongst her family and friends as Rachel is forced to choose between her husband and the girl of her dreams. Say 'I do' to the wonderfully witty film that Cosmopolitan calls "a refreshing romantic comedy."
Customer Reviews:
I love this movie!.......2007-07-05
I had heard some of my friends talking about this movie and decided to check it out. I happened to catch it one evening on a premium channel. I ordered it the next day. This movie is funny, serious, sad and happy all at the same time. I wouldn't label it a gay movie because it is a story of love at first sight and the gender does not matter. I highly recommend this movie whether you are straight or gay. It is a fun movie.
disappointed.......2007-06-18
A young bride walks slowly down the aisle on the arm of her father, toward the waiting groom.A glance to the side and her eyes meet those of a woman in the side aisle and , in that fleeting glance is the
recognition of a soul mate. In that brief moment, her life is changed forever, although she is not yet aware of it.Without really understanding why, she feels the need to broaden her friendship with this woman.
But this only leads to more confusion about her own emotions. At first she cannot understand just what this feeling is, but she gradually becomes aware that she is feeling a passion, far and away greater than
anything she ever felt before and certainly more than she feels for her husband, made all the more devastating by the fact that it is for another woman, although in this case, who could possibly blame her.
Finally, driven to confront the object of her grand passion, she finds that her feelings are returned, leaving her with a dilema which the movie solves with a typically contrived final chase scene, to a happy
ending. So far so good, the makings of an entertaining little romance.
The problem, in my opinion, is that the director has chosen to present this romance, a story based upon an unstoppable passion, with a total lack of passion, or indeed any overt show of affection, let alone
love.Luce never shows any great affectionfor Rachel although numerous occasions arise where a growing attraction could have been introduced, for example at the soccer match when Luce puts her arms
around Rachel, or when they just fail to kiss. In the confrontation scene in the flower shop, just prior to that pathetic schoolgirl embrace among the flowers, Luce seemed to exhibit more curiosity than sympathy
for the turmoil that Rachel was going through. And then the best show of eternal love that the director can come up with is to have Luce say "I want you". What for, to help out in the store. What ever
happened to the old fashioned " I LOVE YOU ". How come neither protagonist ever got around to that simple expression of feeling? And this is the 21st century; we have become quite accustomed the the
fact that physical love is an essential part of passion. Sex is O.K and entirely appropriate and, in this situation not gratuitous but necessary. There has to be an overwhelming motivation for Rachel to cast aside
the bonds of convention, leave her husband, alienate her friends and family and one quick little romp in the flowers is not convincing. In the commentary the director indicated that he felt that it would be asking
too much of the actors to go any further. Nonsense! Both leads are totally professional competant actors and if the script calls for it would have no problem going as far as the story line requires. It is the
director's call. The supporting cast are all adequate and the overall tone of the movie is what you would expect for a fluffy little romance, but this could have been so much more. What a shame to waste a good
storyline. If you would like to see how such a grand passion should be handled, I suggest you rent " When night is falling"
Great Comedy.......2007-06-14
I really enjoyed this movie, it was charming, funny and a tad sad too. I loved the ending, it ended the way I hoped it would.
Imagine you and me.......2007-05-26
Absolutly great on a cold night, huge fire a a big bottle of wine. I loved it.
This movie puts me in a good mood every time I watch it.......2007-05-13
I bought this movie because I loved it's plot. I was thrilled when I watched it and found it to be a very sweet film. It's plot is believable because I saw myself in this movie. I was the other woman and could relate to Luce falling in love with a married women. My road wasn't so short, but I also got the girl in the end. When I need a pick me up I put this movie on and it reminds me of the magic of falling in love, whether it be with a man or a women. But it also brings in the reality of your actions and the pain all must feel along the way. I wouldn't have wanted this movie to change in anyway. I love this movie.

Misguided stepmothers, romantic betrayals, secret marriages--these are not just the makings of modern soap operas; this is what makes the BBC's delightful four-episode miniseries Wives and Daughters come to life. Sweet Molly Gibson (played artfully by Justine Waddell, who communicates more with a squint of her eyes than most actresses can with pages of dialogue) was living life pleasantly when her widowed father (Bill Paterson) decides that, for the good of his daughter, he must remarry. In comes Claire, played to screeching perfection by Francesca Annis. Molly's life is turned upside down by the usually well meaning but off-the-mark Claire, who insists on things being done the proper way. Added to the stew is Claire's beautiful, educated daughter, Cynthia (Keeley Hawes), and the Hamleys, a well-to-do family headed by a squire (Michael Gambon) who is not happy about the romantic interests of his sons.
As is typical with BBC miniseries, the quality writing and lush sets add to the overall appeal. Andrew Davies, who adapted Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones's Diary, penned the marvelous screenplay (based on Elizabeth Gaskell's unfinished novel). It's impossible not to compare this to the ever-popular Pride, and Wives and Daughters measures up. --Jenny Brown
Description
From the team that brought you "Pride and Prejudice." Set in a richly portrayed society well-stocked with eccentric nobles and gossipy villagers, the story centers around 17-year-old Molly Gibson, the only daughter of a respected country Doctor.
Customer Reviews:
Jane Austen Fan Converted to Elizabeth Gaskell Also.......2007-06-13
This is a wonderful 300 minute movie! It is very clean and tasteful! If you enjoy Jane Austen books/movies I'm sure you will enjoy Elizabeth Glaskell ones too. I highly recommend BBC's "North and South" by Gaskell also. These two movies like the A&E production of "Pride and Prejudice" are romances with plots. The emotions, situations and personalities of the characters are true to life and we can still relate to them in this century. Though they might be thought of as "Chick Flicks", the story lines have enough depth to them to hold the attention of my "macho" husband!
Followed the Book.......2007-06-11
I bought the movie because I liked the book and was not disappointed. The movie followed the book very closely. The author of the book, Elizabeth Gaskell, died before finishing the last chapter of the book. I think she was headed in a different direction than the movie took with the ending. It was still a touching ending and I'll watch the movie again and again.
A Sweet Slice of Victorian Life.......2007-06-08
Glossy and grand coming-of-age story following the only daughter of a widower and her relationships with those who shape her life. She has to put up with a new stepmother and wayward step-sister, a handful of guys and a town full of gossips. It's sweet slice of Victorian life in northern England. Although its gentle pace can feel a little slow at times, we feel immersed in the past. The setting is sumptuous and the costumes are superb. Lady Harriet is fabulous and Michael Gambon as Squire Hamley is a treasure.
Lovely story.......2007-06-02
This is a beautiful love story. I really enjoyed watching this period piece.
100 Star Movie!!.......2007-05-16
This is one of my all time favorite movie!! In my opinion it could rival Pride and Prejudice. Justine Waddell and all of the actors bring this simple love story to life. We watched the last tape about 4 times because it is so good! You can't help but love all of the characters, even though you hate some of them. Watch it!!

When you get lost between the moon and New York City (ahem), chances are you'll find yourself taking another look at this hit comedy starring Oscar-nominated Dudley Moore as the charmingly witty, perpetually drunken millionaire Arthur Bach. Arthur falls in love with a waitress (Liza Minelli) who doesn't care about his money, but unfortunately Arthur's stern father wants him to marry a Waspy prima donna. The young lush turns to his wise and loyal butler (Oscar-winner John Gielgud) for assistance and advice. Arthur was a huge hit when released in 1981, as was its Oscar-winning theme song by Christopher Cross. Few remember that the movie was, sadly, the only one ever made by writer-director Steve Gordon, who died less than a year after the film's release. Consistently funny and heartwarming, Arthur was hailed as a tribute to the great romantic comedies of the 1930s. --Jeff Shannon

I love this film! The cast's comic timing is so good, you'll be doubled over laughing! The DVD could use an upgrade though. As funny as this movie is, it is amazing how bad the sequel turned out! Lightning in a bottle the first time...I guess?
alert the media.......2007-03-11
I have a friend who looked for a year for this movie on dvd in brick and mortar stores, I ordered it for her and she had it in a week, and by the next week, she'd watched it ten times. Its a very good movie.
It just doesn't get any better than this-.......2007-01-02
This has been one of my favorite movies for a long time. Recently I was happy to see it on DVD which is a relief from watching the old, grainy VHS versions.
I hadn't seen it in years and watched it today to find myself amazed at how well the movie stands up to time. It's one of those rare, perfect storms of comedy where great writing (truly funny line after truly funny line) is paired with great direction and outstanding performances all at the same time.
Dudley Moore got an Oscar nomination for "Arthur" but lost (although John Gielgud won for best supporting actor). If Moore's performance in "Arthur" doesn't win a Best Actor Oscar -it's proof that no comedic actor could ever win the title (another example is Gene Wilder in "Young Frankenstein").
Steve Gordon crafts the film beautifully keeping true to each of the characters and the warm-hearted tone of the story. Quite simply, IMHO the movie is a rare gem. It's only sad that Steve Gordon passed away just a year after "Arthur" was released.
Regarding the DVD, it's so/so. Although the video quality is a leap over the old VHS copies, there is still no widescreen version available.
The DVD has a few extras that are nice but it's just not enough. One example is commentary from the Director stating how he greatly wished how certain deleted takes and scenes could have been included (because they were hysterical), but that he had to make tough choices for a final edit. The DVD, being the perfect format to include such material, certainly should have offered it as well.
This, the original "Arthur", is a classic comedy that is one for the books.

Although it was unfortunately ignored during its brief theatrical release, this sumptuously seductive production is that rarest of cinematic breeds, the (barely) respectable guilty pleasure. Combining historical fact with hysterical anachronisms of language and mannerism, it's been tailored for maximum contemporary appeal but maintains a lush, romantic feel for its factual 16th-century tale of Venetian love, lust, and political repression. Catherine McCormack (Mel Gibson's ill-fated bride in Braveheart) delivers a star-making performance as the "dangerous beauty" who becomes a skillful courtesan to pursue her forbidden love for a dashing Venetian senator (Rufus Sewell). It's all rather silly in a high-toned fashion, and the film turns dour when the church intervenes with a Scarlet Letter-like papal inquest. But the movie's joyously ribald vitality is utterly irresistible, and the casting of McCormack with Jaqueline Bisset (as her mother and courtesan mentor) is a stroke of pure genius. Merchant-Ivory would've made a smarter film from this material, but it probably wouldn't be nearly as entertaining. --Jeff Shannon

Not what I expected.......2007-06-12
I orginally watched this movie on my computer through netflix and decided I loved the movie so much I needed to purchase it, which I did through Amazon. It took me several weeks to actually watch the movie as I would constantly browse by the movie, read what it was about and then move on. Finally I decided to watch the movie and was pleasantly surprised. What I watched was not what I expected to see. The movie not only caught my attention from the beginning but kept it through the end. I experienced several emotions while watching it and would recommend it to anyone and in fact have recommended it to several people already. This is the type of movie that even if you don't understand everything that is said, as there are several parts in which they speak slightly like Shakespear, you still understand the meaning/emotions which are being portrayed. Catherine McCormack definately out did herself in this movie.
Terrific.......2007-06-08
Don't let the title and DVD cover fool you into thinking it's a fluff film. It's a much better film than what's implied. Good acting and absorbing story.
Excellent.......2007-05-13
I can't be more happy than I am with Amazon services. I have both Dangerous Beauty DVD and a watch Seiko SNA 061 in excellent condition (and very cheap).

One of the best movies you've never heard of..........2007-04-25
I admit it... I had never even heard of this movie. Or, if I had, the title would have put me off. I would have thought by looking at the DVD cover and title that it would be some cheesy modern day "girl seduces boy" film.
Instead, it is a powerful tribute to a powerful and influencial woman, Veronica Franco. Living during the 16th century in Venice, Veronica chose to become an intellectual courtesan - and ultimately an author. Her story is inspirational! See this movie... you will enjoy it. I also highly recommend the soundtrack.
Great movie!.......2007-03-20
I love this movie! It is very intelligent... Informs you about women's options in the era... Empowering... Thought provoking... Sexy... Love it!

Frequently given short shrift as a blue movie (which it is) and as mindless (which it isn't), director Adrian Lyne's follow-up to Flashdance (insert own joke here) is a thoughtful, smutty film about a bad sexual relationship. It follows the two-month affair between Elizabeth, an art-gallery dealer, and John, a Wall Street exec. The relationship spirals downward into raunchier sex (filmed, by the way, quite nicely) but principally is about two adults doing adult things but not acting anything like real adults. Attempts at actual human connection, about the longing to be "good," are present here and make this an above-average erotic film. Rourke is just honing his scumbag, bad-boy persona; but it doesn't overwhelm. Lots and lots of Kim Basinger. --Keith Simanton
Customer Reviews:
BDSM Movie.......2007-06-20
This is not your average soft porn - this movie is about a BDSM relationship. If you don't know what that stands for, this may not be the movie for you. If you do, this is one of the best you'll ever see. The seduction and the energy between these two is incredible. Kim Basinger's striptease, performed to Joe Cocker's "You Can Leave Your Hat On," is absolutely classic. They even managed to make the midnight snack scene hot, even though I kept thinking, "Who's going to clean that up?"
This film has a well-deserved cult status in the genre. If you're able to appreciate the beauty of this type of relationship, the only real disappointment is the way the movie ends.
If you love the story, I would also recommend the book this was based on, Nine and a Half Weeks: A Memoir of a Love Affair. However, if you find the ending of this movie depressing, you definitely don't want to see the sequel, Another 9 1/2 Weeks, unless you just can't get enough of Mickey Rourke scowling.
Kim Basinger is so beautiful and Mickey's rugged, macho.......2007-05-23
pre-pro boxer face are very sexy indeed. My problem was with Elizabeth (Kim), with this type of encounter, either you're into it or your're not. Don't try to make it anything else than it is. Either enjoy it or leave. Which is what she did at the end. Once this type of relationship is exposed to light it dies, because it was all an illusion anyway. But very erotic. Enjoy!
9 1/2 Weeks.......2007-03-09
It was HOT! For couples who are feeling frisky, this might add a spark that'll lead to a flame. Kim was a her best, so was Mickey.
Probably worth seeing once.......2007-01-23
The physical dvd itself is encased in a rather flimsy cardboard and plastic folder. The opening scenes looked like the transfer to dvd was made not from a master but rather from some well-worn film salvaged from a cellar. Beyond these superficial but distracting esthetics (I guess you get what you pay for) the movie starts out with reasonable characters and circumstances. The mental and emotional submission is gradual, calculated, and believable. Unfortunately, the movie seems to go downhill very quickly after Basinger's first violently achieved submission to Rourke -- or perhaps Basinger's plight just became too unmistakably sad and relevant for the movie's message to be well-received. Any possible maturation in Rourke's character as hinted by the end of the movie is weakly developed at best.
when a man loves a woman.......2007-01-23
A perfect duet of Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger makes you forget about everything, lose your head and yourself in the world of love, passion and sexual fantasy.
Perfect style of movie, perfect match of actors - that makes big value of film. Very sensual movie that have nothing to do with all bad things that was said about it.
5 stars for actors, scenario, directing and perfect act.

Thr3e, a thriller that investigates a particularly savvy criminal mind, exceeds the average terrorist plot action-drama with psychological complexity. However, its psychotic twist lacks originality compared to films like Fight Club, which also attribute schizophrenia to the protagonist's cruel actions. When Kevin Parson's (Marc Blucas) writer's block for completing his theology PhD thesis paper about the nature of good and evil coincides with his receiving threatening phone calls from a local terrorist named The Riddle Killer, his closest childhood friend, Samantha Sheer (Laura Jordan), and a police officer, Jennifer Peters (Justine Waddell), jump in to help save him. But as Kevin's past childhood traumas are unearthed alongside evidence that The Riddle Killer couldn't possibly be involved with threats on Kevin's life, Samantha and Jennifer slowly begin to suspect that Kevin is actually committing crimes against himself. Though the film's moralistic Christian ending feels tacked on, Kevin's investigation into the human subtleties that blur lines between good and evil is portrayed intriguingly, manifesting as a film that mines common territory among criminals and the mentally ill. --Trinie Dalton
Description
From the highly acclaimed book by best-selling author Ted Dekker, this taut and electrifying thriller about a young seminary student targeted by an elusive and deadly madman delivers heart-pounding twists that'll keep you guessing up until the shocking final scene!
Customer Reviews:
What was this?.......2007-06-19
I had just finished reading the book which by the way is excellent. Then I heard that it was out in a movie and was pretty excited about that. I guess the best thing I can say is if you have read the book then at least the names are the same. Other than that this movie was really of no resemblance what so ever. It was full of bad acting and I just wasted an hour and a half of my life that I wish I could get back. I don't think the script writers even read the book and Ted Dekker should be ashamed of himself to let this have his name on it. DON'T BUY THIS MOVIE!!!!!
Very good.......2007-06-13
I read the package and decided to give it a try. I have to say this was a pretty interesting film that kept my attention throughout. I did however guess what was coming about a half hour or so before the twist began to materialize. This takes nothing away from the film as the other people watching with me all declared I had to be wrong. Marc Blucas did a credible job in the role of Kevin, the one being stalked by the sadistic killer and Laura Jordan was very good as his grown up childhood sweetheart, Samantha, but Justine Waddell as Jenifer, the police psychologist was just excellent. Anyway, the bottom line here is, give this film a chance. It is a pretty good low budget thriller that does not leave you feeling that you've wasted a hundred and some minutes of your life. I understand this was based on a novel. I might have to give the novel a try, or at least look up other things that the author may have written. I see possibilities there too.
A pyschological, faith-based thriller.......2007-06-12
Let's face it. We live in a movie culture. Every weekend millions flock to theaters to check out Hollywood's latest installment of movie entertainment. More often than not we plop down $8-$10 for garbage and think little of it. No doubt there are some diamonds in the rough, and good, quality, clean films can be found if you look hard enough. But when will faith-based films find a place in our movie culture? Is it just a futile dream to think that Christians will ever be able to influence Hollywood? After watching Thr3e recently I am convinced more than ever that this dream is becoming a reality.
Thr3e is based on the best-selling novel by Ted Dekker, and is the first theatrical release by Fox Faith. This is a psychological thriller that tells the story of Kevin Parson, a troubled seminary student who finds himself the target of an insane serial killer. Kevin (Marc Blucas) begins to receive threatening phone calls from the mad man demanding that he confess his past sins. Criminal Psychologist Jennifer Peters (Justine Waddell) believes this mad man is the infamous Riddle Killer who murdered her brother, and she takes a special interest in Kevin's case. Kevin enters into a deadly cat and mouse game that brings his troubled past to the surface. Along with his best friend, Samantha (Laura Jordan), he must find out what the killer wants and how to stop him.
Thr3e is a fast-paced thriller that balances action and suspense perfectly. Fans of the novel will be pleased that the film maintains the integrity of the story, and the differences between novel and film are minor. Thr3e was shot in Poland on a very limited budget, and neither aspect is obvious on screen. Director Robby Henson does a masterful job of making all the parts work despite the limitations that many big-budget films don't have. Marc Blucas shines in his role as Kevin, and the supporting cast holds their own.
While this is a faith-based movie produced by a faith-based film company, Thr3e does not look like a Christian film and should not be labeled as a "family film". There is no profanity, sex, or inappropriate scenes and the PG-13 rating is accurate because of the intensity of the film. Many Christian critics have bashed Thr3e because there are no altar calls at the end or "come-to-Jesus" moments that one might expect from a Christian film. However, Thr3e excels where other faith-based films have failed in the past: It is relevant! This is a modern-day movie parable that both Christians and non-Christians can not only enjoy, but be challenged by. Thr3e is all about the struggle between good and evil and the film challenges us all to consider our own personal spiritual condition. The message is not thrown in our faces, and as a result is more effective.
Thr3e is a giant step forward in faith-based film and entertainment. Our collective hats should be off to Ted Dekker, Fox Faith, and the makers of this film for producing a movie that is entertaining, challenging, worth watching and relevant to our culture. (From Christian Library Journal)
Lukewarm thriller suffers from poor performances.......2007-06-12
"Thr3e" (no, it's not a prequel to "Se7en"), is based on the novel by Ted Dekker, and tells the story of a young seminary student who is terrorized by a psychopathic bomber, who may or may not be a person from his past.
When I reviewed the book some time ago, I noted that the final plot twist, which is either brilliant or absurd depending on your view, would determine whether you loved or hated it (for the record, I tend toward the latter). When I rented this DVD, I was curious to see if the translation from page to screen made the ending more believable. To some extent it does, since Alan McElroy's screenplay leaves out some problematic scenes from the book, but the viewer may still feel cheated.
The movie has decent production values considering its low budget, and the score establishes a tone of eerie menace, but alas, the poor quality of the performances ultimately sink the film. Although Marc Blucas and Laura Jordan do a good job as Kevin and Sam, Justine Wadell is not credible or convincing as a top police investigator. Bill Moseley, who plays the villain Slater, comes off as an upset hippie (as another reviewer puts it) rather than an evil genius. Priscilla Barnes (Aunt Balinda) is completely over-the-top. Her portrayal makes her character comical and pathetic when she should have been sadistic and manipulative.
DVD collectors looking for a satisfying thriller will probably find this a rather tepid tale. At least it's free of foul language and graphic violence.
Psychological thriller.......2007-06-08
Ted Dekker is a great author who writes compelling, imaginative and provocative stories. This is the first of these books made into a film. The film stays true to the book, and even manages to up the suspense a bit.
The story begins with a mysterious copy cat bomber that pulls in a police officer who lost a brother to a similar criminal act. The lead character is stalked by a killer who wants him to confess. The story unwinds his past and the secrets he has kept.
I won't spoil the ending, but it is a good one that you will not see coming. While the film is obviously a low budget one that lacks some of the crisp production of a high budget film, it nonetheless has a certain charm and enough grain that it heightens the drama.
The acting is OK, the special effects are pretty basic, and some of the characters are perhaps a bit one dimensional, but the story captures your interest. In the end that is what makes a good film anyway, and this one delivers a great story.

Like the previous three Inu-Yasha features, Fire on the Mystic Island (2004) pits the cast of Rumiko Takahashi's "feudal fairy tale" against new foes, unrelated to the tale of the Shikon Jewel. This time, it's the Four War Gods, powerful demons on the island of Houraijima, who preserve and augment their power by sacrificing half-demon children. Director Toshiya Shinohara uses lots of CG effects in the endless fights: explosions, lightning bolts, fire bombs, poisonous insects. But the visual glitz can't disguise that Fire on Mystic Island is the weakest of the features. The War Gods are standard-issue villains whose demise is a forgone conclusion. Inu-Yasha's half-brother Sesshomaru walks into the film, slays one of the War Gods, and walks out. Introducing a replica of Kikyo feels like a desperate attempt to introduce some emotion into a faltering plot. Kagome and Inu-Yasha once again combine forces to defeat the most powerful demon, but the film lacks the strong character relationships that give the series much of its charm. Inu-Yasha fans may want Fire on the Mystic Island to complete their collections, but they'll look in vain for the visual beauty of Affections Touching Across Time, the warmth of Castle Beyond the Looking Glass, and the passion of Swords of an Honorable Ruler. (Unrated, suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity) --Charles Solomon

This is a great stand alone movie for those looking to get into a great anime and not spend a lot of money on the episodes when they are not sure they will like it or not. For those who are long time fans it brings everything you have come to love about inu yasha: action, romance, and comedy.
In this particular film you discover more details about Inu Yasha's and Kikyo's ambiguous past relationship. This info is not critical to the series but it gives you some interesting insight. I say imbiguous because all you really know about the two is that they met, fell in love, and were tricked into detroying one another. Here you get a bit more detail about their dynamics you wouldnt otherwise see in the show.
The majority of the movie takes place on the mysterious Horai island, home to half demons not unlike inu yasha. This island home is meant to protect these hanyou (half demons) from humans and full blooded demons such as sesshomaru (not that he would dirty himself with them anyways). Usually the island is hidden by a thick and dense fog, but every 50 years or so the islad reveals itself to the outside world. It is then the Inu Yasha and friends meet a young demon girl who somehow knows inu yashan and needs his help. Also a mysterous blazen scar appears in Inu Yasha's back! He has no choice then to travel to the island to help not only the young hanyou, but himself as well.
That's a rather short plot i know but the movie also includes a side story with Sesshomaru and Rin. Characters who do not make an appearance this time around include Naraku, Kohaku, Kagura, Kanna, and Koga. (maybe it's an "K" thing?). But all your other favorites are there. Just sit back watch and enjoy. If you truly enjoy inu yasha, then you will truly enjoy this film.
Standard stuff.......2007-05-06
The animation is amazing. But the plot is pretty standard, especially in the Inu Yasha universe. I have grown tired of the writers using Kikyo or Kagome or their image to threaten Inu Yasha and force him to relive his most traumatic moment. The fights drag on for too long. And the whole movie just seems like spectacular excuse to give the fans more action, but no character development. The weakness of the series is the same weakness of this movie.
It was pretty good.......2007-03-04
This one doesn't compare to the first 3 but its still good. This story dives into Inuyasha and his brothers past. Inuyasha was marked by a team of demons who sacrifice half demon children to increase their power. The level of comedy is pretty low and this one is set with a little more serious tone. The Demons are no pushovers. All the fights were very good, the only problem is after watching this, you cant help but notice how weak Inuyasha really is. And just how powerful his brother is. Maybe the story should be surronded by his brother a lot more. Anyway if you like Inuyasha then this is a must buy.
Not breaking new ground.......2007-03-02
Fire on the Mystic Island is like the filler episode of the movie series. It's fun, it's pretty, it's got some great fights and some good dialogue and character interaction, but you don't really learn anything about the characters or the world of the series that you didn't already know. While I was watching it, I didn't get the feeling at any point that I was watching a movie. It felt just like a really long episode of the anime. If all that is what you're looking for, then you're in luck. If not, you probably won't enjoy it as much as the other three movies.

As a director, Wes Craven has been able to infuse his horror movies with humor and some smart, often genuinely creepy, thrills, even on his lowest-budgeted films. As a producer of horror movies, well, his record has been spotty at best. Craven tapped his longtime editor Patrick Lussier to direct Dracula 2000, and the movie ends up with all the good and bad of "a Wes Craven production." A modern-day update of the Dracula legend, the script has some genuinely good ideas. Christopher Plummer (The Insider) takes a relatively juicy role as Van Helsing, owner of an antiques shop specializing in ancient weapons. He takes exception to how his namesake was portrayed in Bram Stoker's classic novel, which he's more than happy to tell his assistant (Jonny Lee Miller, "Sick Boy" from Trainspotting) without telling him the whole story. When Omar Epps leads a band of high-tech criminals to break into Van Helsing's high security vault (thinking that with so much security there's got to be something extremely valuable in there), what they end up stealing is the body of Dracula, who of course awakens from his slumber. When the story shifts to New Orleans, where Van Helsing's estranged daughter is working for the local Virgin Megastore (here metaphor is replaced by product placement), Dracula is drawn to her. The undead start to multiply, and the vampire hunt resumes. Another excellent idea deals with a new origin to Dracula, flashing back to biblical times to explain his aversion to silver and crosses. But there is a downside. Under the inept direction of Lussier the movie is never scary, inspiring instead an occasional feeling of pity for the actors. Overall, this a vampire movie for the mind, not the heart. --Andy Spletzer
Description
The master of modern horror, Wes Craven, presents a riveting adaptation of the chilling classic featuring Jennifer Esposito (SUMMER OF SAM), Omar Epps (IN TOO DEEP), Jonny Lee Miller (TRAINSPOTTING), Vitamin C (GET OVER IT), and Jeri Ryan (STAR TREK: VOYAGER). When a team of techno-savvy thieves breaks into a high-security vault, they don't discover priceless artwork ... they find a crypt that hasn't been opened for 100 years! Suddenly, the ancient terror of Dracula is unleashed in the chaotic 21st century. Free to follow his pursuits of seduction and power, Dracula's first destination is America and the exotic city of New Orleans, a place where he feels right at home. Not far behind, however, is a young vampire hunter (Miller) from London, determined to save a young woman (Justine Waddell) with whom Dracula shares his dark legacy!

Great spin on Dracula.......2007-06-04
I have always have a love for Dracula and Dracula movies and I must say that this one had a great spin on the fabled Dracula. Gerard Butler as Dracula was amazing. He mesmerized with his eyes just as you would imagine Dracula doing. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and seeing Gerard Butler, the rising star, in one of his earlier performances. Gerard Butler fans will love it.
Gerry Butler Must!.......2007-05-12
I originally got this movie only because Gerry Butler is in it, but after watching it, it's really not that bad of a movie. The acting isn't the greatest, but it's still pretty good.
Just another version but oh what a Hot! vampire.......2007-04-06
A so-so version produced by Wes Craven with a slightly different look
at Dracula's origins. Somewhat campy version but not very scary. Gerard
Butler is, however, mesmerizing as Dracula and very sexy and has a very
commanding presence in the role. One of those looks and I'd certainly
bare my throat for him.
karate vampires.....WTF.......2007-03-23
since when have vampires taken karate classes....This film is garbage. Buy Bram Stokers Dracula or the origional Dracula instead.
COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER.......2007-02-04
I bought this to add to my Gerard Butler collection....I am a huge fan of Bram Stokers Dracula--I felt the movie had excellent actors in it--and a different take on Dracula--but it just didn't work--weak plot-and it shouldn't have been..
If you like Gerard Butler--GET IT---seeing him in this movie--WOW--it was worth it just for that alone....

Good little movie, funny........2007-05-29
This is a movie about a regular Austrailian Joe named Danny who decides to do something a little different, like make a deckchair fly. when his scheme actually works, he finds himself in a place where he re-discovers what he has lost, and the power one has over their own life. Tough decisions, funny situations, a whole lot of heart. This is a really good movie to rent or own.
Danny Deckchair Delight!.......2007-01-12
The move depicts the main characters' everyday life in it's insignificant details very well. The extraordinary things that happen are totally unexpected and really fun for the audience. Danny's character development is well done and believable. We just love the movie!
Absolutely love it!.......2007-01-11
I gave it 5 stars because when I rented it I just had to watch it more than once, and then I just had to buy it! Yeah, it is predictable, but, so what? That was part of the enjoyment, actually. It feels good and is a great escape. Sweet and funny, with fun to watch characters.
I guess I'm not good at picking apart a film, but analyzing it to death takes away all the fun and the things you do like about it! Perfect for a weekend date or a lazy afternoon....
Rhys Ifans and Miranda Otto are a great pair in this film.
GREAT movie - Rhys Ifans (Hugh Grant's roommate in Notting Hill) is charming and hilarious in this movie!.......2006-11-06
I watched this on a TV movie channel ONLY because Rhys Ifans' name caught my eye in the synopsis! And now I'm so glad I did! He is as entertaining in this movie as he was in Notting Hill! And he really cleans up well! About halfway through the movie he shaves and cuts his hair - this makes him look completely different! Now I'm ordering it on DVD - really enjoyable.
Silly but a fun ride nonetheless.......2006-10-12
Get this if you are a fan of Rhys Ifans. He is funny once again in this role in his own goofy sort of a way. A couple of good supporting roles also by Justine Clarke and Miranda Otto. The storyline is obviously silly but fun at the same time. At the very least it is worthy entertainment.
