An aging Satchel Paige wanted to be the first African American baseball player to integrate the major leagues after World War II. Of course, things didn't work out that way: the visibly dignified and younger Jackie Robinson got the nod, while the Negro Leagues he left behind carried on with such brilliant talents as Josh Gibson segregated from deserving opportunities. This HBO movie concerns the period just before Robinson was pressed into a difficult role breaking the color barrier, and the rich script by David Himmelstein and Gary Hoffman concerns his aspirations as well as those of the frustrated Paige and the deteriorating Gibson. Blair Underwood plays Robinson with an expected nobility, while Delroy Lindo is superb as Paige as is Mykelti Williamson as Gibson. Directed by Kevin Rodney Sullivan, the film really does fill a gap in a viewer's imagination about what these three legendary men must have been going through--and much of it is painful to witness. With Edward Herrmann as Branch Rickey. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Negro League Baseball.......2007-04-12

You don't have to be a baseball fan to enjoy this movie. Good acting, historically sound. Very entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Bang the Drum Slower.......2007-03-09

Recently I bought both 'Bingo Long' and 'Soul of the Game' and compared the two not on which is best but if they still hold up. Bingo is still entertaining but Soul has more 'soul'. It's also a very dark look at a time when men were judged by how they would behave in society and the irony hits you in the face. Today we have so much outlaw actiions taking place and people look the other way on black player's behavior. One such player during those cruel times judged by his character was Josh Gibson, who in any league would have been a bonafide slugger, hitter and catcher. That they choose Jack Robinson on how he would behave doesn't set the record straight. Soul lays it down by also showing two black men and their professional respect for each other. Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson. A good movie indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Characters, not accuracy make this movie wonderful.......2005-04-30

Sticklers for accuracy will find this movie lacking as the paths of Jackie Robinson, Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige weren't as well intertwined as the movie suggests. The connection with Willie Mays is an interesting, meaningful plot connection . . . and extremely hard to believe.

Still, the acting and film/myth making is perfect for this most important story of "America growing up." The pace of the film, keyed by a jumpy-jazz soundtrack fits with exuberance of the post-war, "time to get moving" era. A cross-country automobile trip juxtaposes the new (a new class of prosperous African-Americans with their shiny automobile) with the old (not able to use a toilet in a small town).

The many changes of the era are used to tell the story -- the challenge of professional baseball to stay profitable, what to do about "negros" (who had just fought with distinction for world democracy) made something, somehow inevitable.

Josh Gibson was the great slugger (the "Negro Babe Ruth" he was called), although by 1946 was fading due to age and a brain tumor. Satchel Paige was (one of?) the greatest pitcher ever and was a great box office draw.

The story turns on Branch Rickey's selfish, sneaky, and noble plan to integrate baseball. The City was right (Brooklyn - the melting pot); the politics were right (Fiorella LaGuardia appealed to minorities and Happy Chandler, the new baseball commissioner, had stated his openness to integration); the ownership was right (Rickey had played baseball on an integrated team in college); and of course, Jackie Robinson was the right man.

Rickey is portrayed by the statesman-like Ed Hermann. The famous meeting where he explains to Jackie Robinson that he requires his pioneer to be strong enough to "not fight back" is portrayed with the subdued importance that's required. Robinson's background (an officer in the Army, a star halfback with UCLA) is portrayed convincingly by Blair Underwood.

Delroy Lindo is a bit too serious, and too devoted to his wife, not to mention possessing too broad a body, to make me believe that he's Satchel Paige. Still, he plays the part of the superstar pitcher with the big ego that's required.

I have no idea if Mykelti Williamson's portrayal of Josh Gibson is realistic, but it's delightful, poignant and ultimately tragic.

Rickwood Field (Birmingham) and League Stadium (built for "Field of their Own" in Indiana) add another touch of colorful, enjoyable non-realism to the story.

Enjoy the myth, but don't make any bar bets based on this film.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Baseball Movie...Ever..........2004-08-24

I would agree that the baseball skills of the actors is somewhat deficient but, really only a trained eye could detect the. This a truly a great baseball movie for the ages and a truly great movie regardless of the baseball aspect... it is filled with emotion, intrigue, stunning photography, fabulous music, and even historical accuracy. It is an open door into the deep, rich history of negro league baseball. This truly is a film not just for baseball fans, Go get it!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the great baseball movies ever.......2003-01-18

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. One of the only movies that give recognition to Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson. As well, as cover the lives of the player in the Negro Baseball League. I feel this is a must see movie.

4 out of 5 stars Setting The Record Straight!!!.......2006-02-20

Okay to start this off right, I AM NOT HATER! That being said, i think the game is a pretty good lyricist, which means that he is superman in the hood and christopher reeves worldwide. The documentary which owes its commercial success to 50 cent and Dr. Dre is a classic album. But the question remains, did the game write the entire album or was it put together by Dr. Dre, The Game, 50 Cent, and a million guest appearences. The first thing i noticed when looking at the documentary in comparison to Get Rich Or Die Tryin' is almost everything except the lyrics of the songs are done by someone else. lETS RECAP, 50(WHO HES BEEFING WITH) CENT, BUSTA RHYMES, DR DRE, EMINEM, FAITH, MARY J. BLIDGE,TONY YAYO(WHO HES BEEFING WITH), FLOETRY, DAMN!,TIMBALAND, HAVOC (WHO HES BEEFING WITH),KANYE WEST,JUST BLAZE, HI-TEK,and NATE DOGG. The Game has almost more guest appearances than actual songs which makes me think this is more of a compilation or soundtrack then anything else. Now after reviewing the album, let's review the crews. G-unit vs. Black Wallstreet! Waiting......Waiting......O wait the game is the only person signed to himself that has any success. I thought that Billboard was a pretty good rapper and it's a shame that he passed away but now that i have recognized this, lets still review crews. Lloyd Bank$(One of the best artists in the game period),Young Buck (Definately One of the kings of the south next to T.I., Ludacris, Scarface and UGK),Tony Yayo(Whos cd "thoughts of a predicate felon" was the most underrated albums of 2005), Dj Whoo Kid (The best mixtape DJ next to DJ KAY SLAY and DJ Clue),and 50 "Interscope" Cent (Who is one of the few artists in history to carry a major label on his back as far as hip hop is concerned. The only artists to do this is Jay-z,Eminem (before passing the torch to 50),and 2pac. The reason why I compare crews is anyone who grew up in the hood knows that when your main artist gets signed, the next big move is to put your friends and family on or at least try (Hood Rule#5). This has been a hip hop tradition with every real artist in the game (Snoop Dogg put on Dogg Pound,Nelly attempting to put on the St. Lunatics, Ludacris attempting to put on DTP,Jay-Z put on Roc-a-fella,Eminem putting on D12,etc). Since The Game has been out, he hasn't even put out a mixtape for Blackwallstreet. Ever since he was dropped from G-unit, he has done more songs mentioning them then when he was actually with them. Finally I want to review the reason for their beef in the first place. The game's disloyalty to the man along with several others that put him on. If he was someone like Kanye West or Common this would be acceptable because they do not claim to men of the streets. However, The Game's whole claim to fame was how hood he was, and his connection with bloods and crips. The Game being a gangmember should know that almost always, you should ride with the team you come in the game with. The game sided with Fat Joe (Who has street cred but never established a rap career) and Jadakiss (Excellent lyricist but comes up short with his inability to make hit records without guest appearances) after being involved with a song with Ja Rule(Enough Said).

So I don't feel threatened when Ludacris say he coming for the #1 spot
Ask 50, it get lonely on top
You can hate me or love me, but now the cops the only homies he got
When it's beef we eat, we win, but we ain't lonely we pop
You sell records but a GGG-u not!
Acting big on the radio, to me you not
You can ask Mr. CCC who hot

This outré comic adventure (based on a manga adaptation of a Chinese ghost story) takes some odd turns at its midpoint. While Lord of the West Ki Shou prepares to overthrow the corrupt Yin emperor, Taikoubou and his immortal minions appear on the scene--just in time to fend off a devastating tsunami created by four rival immortals sent by Yin commander Bunchu. The bulk of these episodes are devoted to the fantastic battle between Taikoubou, Nataku, Raishinshi, Tenka, and Youzen (who squabble among themselves over who gets to appear in the best scenes) and the four powerful spirits from Kuryuu Island who exert a magical control over the seas. After a typically offbeat struggle, the aloof demon Shinkohyo deftly sums up the series' appeal: "not bad for a bunch of lovable comic misfits." Rated 12 Up: Cartoon violence. --Charles Solomon

The wise guardians in the sky know they need a brave, clever soldier to single-handedly send the evil souls to their doom! Unfortunitly, they close Taikoubou! 4 out of 5 stars Interesting Anime.......2005-02-19

While Soul Hunter (SH) may not have been the best anime i have ever seen, it certainly wasnt the worst. The basic plot line is that our hero Taikoubou, is charged with to carry out a myterious mission Soul Hunt, which in short, he is suppose to houshine all the evil immortals coausing trouble in the human world.

That is the basic plot, but as in all anime nothing is quite so simple and SH is no different. In fact, many times thru-out the anime it gets confusing because there are more than one plot line happening at once, flash backs to other time to confuse you, and you lose track of valuable information and story plot during such events.

One thing this anime has going for it tho is the fight scenes and the humor...it is non stop, and with great fight scenes comes huge suspenes, which definatly builds when you are lead to believ obne of your favorite characters at the end is dead. (i wont say who because i dont want to spoil it). But it is very exciting and there is much at the end about Taikoubou that explains why he does what he does and so on.

This is certainly an anime series yuo dont want to miss....its right up there with neon genesis evangelion and all the best...this is a treasure sure ti be loved for its own uniqueness and style.

5 out of 5 stars BEST ANIME EVER!!!.......2003-12-02

I fell in love with Soul Hunter from the first DVD. Everything after that was absolute heaven... True, it has some faults, like sometimes breaking the fourth wall and/or moving too rapidly to comprehend. I recommend watching the Japanese version w/ subtitles. More info, and the voice actors sound much more suited to the characters. Anyway, Slayers fans should like this. If you like drama without frivolity, I suggest you try something else. SD fans should also watch... Taikoubou goes SD a lot.

4 out of 5 stars good to watch, but better to just rent.......2002-12-07

I have seen the entire series and this is a rather interesting anime but it's flaw is it trying to mix comedy, action, and drama equivalently. The drama sometimes seemed to drag on too long, and the action didn't last long enough, but some of the comedy is really great and the philosophical views and lessons that the anime teaches you are very powerful. I enjoyed it for a very strong fact that it had a good story. Other positives things that could be commented on would be the extras in the dvds, and the american voices. I liked the translation notes especially because they told me some of the verbal jokes that couldn't be translated into english (like japanese puns) and what some of the words they used mean ("gung-fu"?). The american wasn't that bad, in fact I prefered listening to it rather than the japanese one (I still left the japanese subtitles on) because of some of the voices, namely Nataku's voice, which was much better in english. Even though most of the voices were good, I personally hated Raishin-shi's voice because he sounded like some ghetto, black-washed, kid trying to sound cool, especially when he refers to his dad as "pops". The thing that annoyed me the most was the animation, which seems to change every episode. One episode it was sophisticated and clear, next episode, it was gaudy and didn't have the same quality and the previous one. I gave this one a 4 mainly because it kept me interested throughout most of the episodes. It was good but I would recommend it be rented not bought.

    5 out of 5 stars Go Youzen!.......2002-07-12

(Don't ask about the title- I'm a little obsesed...) but anyway this DVD and infact this whole series is something you do not want to miss! It combines a really good sense of humor with a very serious plot line...almost depressing at times...but then in the next scene you have Taikoubou, the main character, eating grass with Sibuxiang or something...Wait was this reveiw soposed to be on this DVD! Okay, this particular one is basically one big battle- a really cool, long, serious, and at times a really extremely funny one! It is a must have for those of you fallowing the series and my personal favorite. It has some really great scenes and Taikoubou defeats this bad guy, Ohma, is the coolest way! I only have two complaints: 1. grr...it leaves off right at the good part!! 2. I am sorry, I mean I really like the character Kisho, Lord of the West, but why did they have to put him on the cover with Youzen? It's no fair! Kou Tenka gets his own cover why shouldn't Youzen! I guess they did that because he is a very important character int the plot of the DVD(okay, I am over it)...but this simple thing was not enough to give this product 4 stars...Buy this DVD!

        Customer Reviews:

        1 out of 5 stars PLEASE DON't BUY IT.......2003-02-19

I bought this DVD being a Daz fan (love his production work)
and hoped getting some info on his work in the studio and how he handled his "independant game".
WHAT A MISTAKE.The WHOLE DVD looks like it was shot in '72 and don't look for chapters or a menu : they don't exist... No booklet either...
The only thing you'll learn is that the man likes to brag a lot (in the streets, in his car, in front of a a 60 year old parking lot security guard (how cool is he),...). 1 or 2 scenes are alright like 1min. freestyle with kurupt & snoop (although the sound is bad as hell).
But it is obvious that Daz is hoping to con us real bad with his family movies compiled in this DVD, trying to make a quick buck.
        Don't make him this pleasure...
