She stole your heart (or turned your stomach, depending on your perspective) with her show-stealing delivery in the hit documentary The Aristocrats. With Jesus Is Magic, comedienne extraordinaire Sarah Silverman is hell-bent on marking her own territory. Jesus Is Magic is a more or less a one-hour variety show, littered with musical numbers and comedic vignettes wedged between video footage of her live act. Though humorous in parts, most of the vignettes and songs are a little bland. You can't help but think they are mere fillers to stretch the film to an hour. The real essence of the film, however, is Sarah Silverman live on stage, mic in hand, delivering the goods. After sitting through Jesus, you will undoubtedly feel Sarah Silverman's magic and find her extremely funny. You may, however, not be able to pinpoint why. Silverman's act is extremely crass, vulgar, obnoxious, disgusting, heavy on race-laced humor, and downright gross in parts. The amazing thing about Sarah Silverman's material is that if you repeated it to a friend, or read it in an article, you probably would think it was base, childish, and just not that funny. But what makes the material sparkle is Sarah's deadpan, blunt, matter-of-fact delivery and perfect comedic timing. Not to mention she is super foxy, which has a way of amplifying her humor for better or worse. Jesus Is Magic is proof that Sarah Silverman is the smartest and funniest comedienne on the circuit today. We just hope the next release is a full performance, minus the filler. --Rob Bracco

Pretty Awesome.......2007-06-27
The stand-up is spectacular. I was kind of annoyed/disappointed by the bits in between. I love Bob Odenkirk. I mean, LOVE him. Yet, I didn't like his role in this movie. He wasn't used correctly.
not great.......2007-06-19
She's more politically incorrect than funny. I groaned and rolled my eyes more than I laughed out loud. If I had been watching it with friends who would have been offended, I would have felt even worse. But can she sing! She should concentrate on that.
Long Way to Go.......2007-06-10
About 20% of her material is genuinely funny. Most polished professional comedians can breath easy. Silverman has a long way to go before she can be fairly considered a great comedian. Right now she's coasting on her cuteness and her willingness to say absolutely anything for a cheap shocked giggle. Sort of a good looking female Borat. What happens when her cute-girl-with-a-filthy-mouth schitck gets old and people start to ask, "what else ya got"?
Sarah Siverman is quite funny, but this needs more polishing.......2007-06-06
I am a Sarah Siverman fan as she is one of very few comics, especially female, to let it all hang out and see what happens. Her dark humor may be very insulting to those who are easilt offended, but to me the more un-pc that she is, the funnier I find her.
While I did not see this with high expectations as I am not a huge fan of stand-up acts (which is what this piece is at its core), even those werer not fully met. Sarah is cute, funny, and her play on words would have made for a good 20 minute short. Instead we get over an hour of songs, skits, and other filler, to try and give it some air by getting out off the stage. Some stuff works, some works for a while, and some is just not funny.
If you are a fan, rent it and watch it with other Sarah fans, and you'll have on OK time. Now that Margaret Cho has become almost an irrelevant one trick pony, Sarah is one of the few truly funny females around who mixes it up. If anyone saw the 2007 MTV Movie Awards and found her funny, you could do much worse than seeing this as most "comedy" movies are just not very funny. Humor is hard work and Sarah is an impish little marvel who I'd love to see in a more fully realized vehicle.
God-awful.......2007-06-04
The movie is basically a comedy routine generously (and thankfully) interspersed with some sketch comedy. Her pacing is so slow, it's as if she was told that she needed an hour's worth of comedy, but she only had 20 minutes of material. Then, instead of coming up with 40 more minutes, she just slowed down her joke delivery by one-third.
And the jokes aren't even very funny. Most of the laughter from the audience seems to be of the nervous kind. Brash and offensive jokes work when you don't do them ALL THE TIME. That way, the audience is caught off-guard when you go "zag" and the audience is expecting you to "zig". But she relies so heavily on the "I-can't-believe-she-said-that" style, that the audience comes to expect it.
Unbearable.

One of the most shocking events in modern American history gets a skilled and respectful treatment in United 93. The movie begins by following the four terrorists who hijacked the plane that never reached its target on 9/11/2001, tracking them as they enter the airport and wait for their flight, surrounded by the people who will die from their actions. From there, it cuts to and fro among air traffic controllers and the military as, gradually, it becomes clear that planes are being hijacked and crashed into buildings. As the focus turns to the captive United Flight 93, the passengers discover, due to cell phone connections with family, that they're on a suicide mission and--almost paralyzed by stress and anxiety--decide to fight back. Most movies create tension by implying what might happen, but with United 93 the audience knows exactly what happened: Every person on that plane died. As a result, the movie is more relentlessly gut-wrenching than suspenseful (though the dawning realization of the air traffic controllers has an effective creeping dread). But writer/director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy) manages to keep the scale of the events human; there are no glamorous heroics, only terrifying confusion and desperate, hopeless bravery. One can only hope the movie brings some peace to the families of the passengers, as United 93 is the cinematic equivalent of a war memorial, commemorating lives lost in a moment of horrible, harrowing conflict. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
The best September 11 movie made (forget World Trade Centre).......2007-06-21
Went and saw the movie 'United 93' which was about the third plane that was supposed to crash into the Pentagon after the other two went into the World Trade Centre, but instead crashed into a field with no survivors.
I actually liked this movie for the emotion, drama and reality portrayed within it. The usual movies I end up seeing are fluffy love stories with happy endings (unless a really excellent horror movie is on) so it was interesting and yet disturbing to see a real life situation reinacted in front of our eyes. The bad parts first: The movie has far too many scenes of the flight control centre which drains the emotional connection of what this movie is really about. They lack empathy and sadness and maintain too much of their professionalism when they learn of the planes, but make extra speedy runarounds trying to locate all the other planes in the sky. You don't really get to know the characters. They are all merely passengers you'd see on an everyday flight (which I'm sure they were) but it looks like no research really went into their personalities. Far too many useless conversations with no meaning up until the point of when the plane is about to crash and everyone is telling their families how much they love them. The footage of the World Trade Centres with smoke all around only shows the actual buildings and not the people around. There were many below who were devastated, scared, confused... why are they not shown?
The good points? Incredible acting. Yes, the actors and actresses are very convincing. My heart was thudding all the way through from when the terrorists were sitting in their assigned seats to when they started stabbing passengers and threatening to blow up the plane. This movie actually made me cry (which is rare), the end music of the children singing added to the impact of how devastating, frightening and above all saddening the plot and how each one of us felt whilst watching. Definately a movie to see if you can handle the truth about 9/11.
On a complete random note, one of the terrorists looks much like Pete Wentz from the band 'Fall Out Boy'. I definately recommend this instead of the pathetic 'World Trade Centre' movie.
riveting.......2007-06-18
absolutely engrossing and brilliant, had me glued to the edge of my seat, biting my nails, even though we all knew the awful outcome. Truly remarkable on using the non-professionals in the roles, and even better some of the real people taking the part of themselves, was totally refreshing and absolutely a splendid kudo on the right side cheek of director Paul Greengrass. The amount of countless hours of research and interviews he must have gone through, is totally present in every minute of the film, richly detailed and totally mesmorizing.
Certainly not a five star movie, but five star in his writing and directing, without question.
BUY this for your collection, the wide screen certainly brings more to the eye, methinks.
Really made 9/11 hit home for me.......2007-05-31
Having never been to New York and being somewhat young when 9/11 occurred, I didn't feel like I really understood the impact of the event--until I saw this movie. It was very powerful and not obnoxiously patriotic in any way. I cried for a long time afterwards--though its characters are very heroic, this is not a happy movie.
United They Fought Back.......2007-05-21
Everybody remembers exactly where he was on September 11, 2001. I was taking a photojournalism course at the Defense Information School at Fort Meade, Maryland, and--ironically--taking part in an exercise on how military reporters should cover terrorist attacks. In fact, we were discussing the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, and how, by the time the bombers came to trial, its significance had been buried because Americans' attention was diverted by the O. J. Simpson "trial of the century." At that moment, a Navy petty officer burst into the classroom and told our Air Force instructor to turn on the television--that the World Trade Center had just been struck by an airplane.
We laughed in disbelief. As Army soldiers, being suddenly thrust by cadre into "live" training scenarios was old hat. We thought we were going to cover a "terrorist event" as a practical writing exercise. But, when the projector switched from the PowerPoint slideshow to the live "Today" show broadcast, we knew from the ominous visual of smoke pouring from the North Tower that this was no exercise.
In the immediate aftermath of the attack, rumors abounded that Fort Meade was next, because the National Security Agency is located there. By day's end, I was standing outside our barracks, rifle in hand. I will never forget the emotions and thoughts that poured through me that day--revulsion, nausea, fear, anger, hatred. And finally, relief, because I had been spared the hell so cruelly inflicted on so many of my fellow Americans. As long as I live, I never want to relive that day. None of us do.
Thus, when trailers for United 93 began screening in Los Angeles theaters shortly before its release, some in the audience wailed, "Too soon! Too soon!" Too soon? From the morning Imperial Japan attacked the U.S. at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, until she surrendered in ignominious defeat on August 15, 1945, 1,348 days had passed. On April 28, 2006, United 93's opening day, 1,689 days of the War on Terror had gone by--almost a full year longer than America's involvement in World War II. Surely time enough has passed to allow us to reflect upon and honor those who died that day.
Although Americans were generally familiar with the events that took place on United Airlines Flight 93, most of what we knew had been the subject of dry news reportage and "what if" conjecture. Now, culling transcripts of cockpit flight recorders, 9-1-1 emergency calls, interviews with surviving family members, and eyewitness accounts, writer and director Paul Greengrass has taken the threads of innumerable and seemingly random facts, and woven them into a powerful visual narrative.
In United 93,Greengrass's masterful direction gives us the feeling that we are reliving September 11 all over again. He takes us from the flight's takeover by Muslim terrorists to the events on the ground as the World Trade Center and Pentagon are hit by the three other hijacked planes. He follows United 93's doomed course, in scenes inter-cutting between the airplane and the various air traffic control towers on the East Coast; he ends with the passengers retaking control of the plane from the hijackers, and its tragic crash in a field outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
By transforming my theater seat into a cramped seat in coach, as the forty-first passenger alongside those who would soon die on that hijacked flight from Newark, Flight 93 thrust the events in my face with visual and aural brutality, compelling me to relive that day--and to recall its lessons.
Filming in "real time," much like Fox TV's popular action series "24," cinematographer Barry Ackroyd and his crew skillfully captured the action with handheld cameras. It's a method I usually eschew for its forced "realism," but Ackroyd made it work by avoiding show-offish, unnecessary camera movement. By shooting mostly with telephoto lenses, he instills in viewers a sense of claustrophobia that heightens the emotional anxiety. John Powell's dark, percussion-laden soundtrack pummels the ears at rapid-fire tempo, ratcheting up the tension to cardiac arrest levels. Throughout the film, my own heart was racing, my brow was sweaty, and I got that same nauseous feeling in my gut that I so vividly remember from that day.
When the end credits rolled, there was nothing but dead silence in the theater where I saw it. United 93 masterfully achieved its objective of re-creating onscreen the nightmare that Americans went through on September 11th.
However, despite the fact that United 93 totally connected with me emotionally as a viewer, it suffers from the primary flaw of telling much of the story from the hijackers' point of view. The viewer learns more about what motivated them to take over the plane than he will ever find out about the private motives of the passengers, whose dialogue is rather threadbare. We know that through AirFone conversations with relatives, the passengers found out that hijacked planes had already hit New York and Washington, that their own flight therefore was doomed, and that this knowledge motivated them to wrest back control of the plane. But we never really find outwhat personally inspired each of them to their valorous actions. We never really get to know the Jeremy Glicks or Todd Beamers. I agree with those critics who have pointed that their dialogue should have been beefed up, and that these heroes should have been more clearly drawn.
Yet I don't think Greengrass himself fully understands what compelled the onboard rebellion. In a recent interview, he explained his film's depiction of the American passengers:
I suppose what I most wanted it to explore was the relationship between individual moments and collective will...You can't lead if the group's not there with the will, and vice versa. Where does leadership come from? It comes from the desire to be led...The order of the airplane was completely subverted...They seized control of the plane, pinned everybody in the back and they were in charge, and something happened in the course of 20-25 minutes...but you've always got that challenge of: what do you do when a bunch of people take over an airplane? You can't just sit there!
While acknowledging and accurately depicting the American passengers' courage, the British director, it seems, hasn't begun to grasp the spirit of independence that most Americans still regard as their birthright. What induced these men and women to action could hardly be reduced simply to some group dynamic of a "desire to be led"--remember, these were American, not German, passengers--but rather, embodied the individualistic, "don't tread on me" streak that fires us up when push comes to shove.
Fortunately, Greengrass's detachment does not undermine the movie's strengths. One scene in particular captures what makes the American spirit so unique and indomitable. As the passengers start attacking the hijackers to take back the plane, a frightened Swedish passenger tries to block them, standing astride the aisle like a lunch hall monitor. "Just do what they say," he lectures. "Give in to their demands...co-operate, and we will be safe." The Americans must shove the Swedish weenie aside in order to reach their attackers and regain control of the cockpit. I have yet to see a more succinct metaphor for European dithering and condescension as obstacles to righteous American action.
Another critique--that United 93 is Politically Correct--is, I think, mostly unfounded. The movie makes no bones about distinguishing its villains from its heroes; it just does so without heavy-handed sloganeering, which would have wreckedthe taut, montage narrative structure. Composer Powell's menacing and foreboding passages, especially while the terrorists are praying, underscore their vicious brutality, just as upbeat, martial music accompanies scenes of Americans fighting back. Nor does the film disguise the facts that the hijackers were motivated by Islamism, or that the passengers took back the airplane to prevent its striking the U.S. Capitol, and, they hoped, to allow them to return safely to their loved ones.
A year after September 11, I spotted a bumper sticker on a passing car while driving the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Next to an image of the American flag were printed these words: "9/11: Remember. Rebuild. Recover." I could not help but think that there was one "R" missing in that slogan. United 93 does a brilliant job in reminding us that on a Boeing 757, a group of heroic citizens taughtus the response befitting a free people in the face of wanton savagery--Revenge. And the film left me experiencing another "R" as well: Reverence for the memories of those heroes.
Every American ought to invest two hours of his life in watching United 93, because it graphically depicts the inspiring acts, courage, and hope that helped spark the flames of direct action against Islamofascism. David Beamer, father of slain hero Todd Beamer, said of United 93: "This film is a wake-up call. And although we abhor terrorism as a tactic, we are at war with a real enemy and it is personal."
No, it is not too soon for this movie. Rather, let us hope that it is not too late.
Sad but great move.......2007-05-16

The political becomes personal in 9/11: Press for Truth, which examines the World Trade Center attacks from the perspective of the families who lost loved ones. Written and directed by Ray Nowosielski, the documentary draws partly from Paul Thompson's website-turned-book, The Terror Timeline, and much of the commentary comes from Lorie Van Auken, Patty Casazza, and Mindy Kleinberg, three of the "Jersey Girls." Along with Kristen Breitweiser, the 9/11 widows have become activists in its wake. As Casazza says, "We all had questions...and wanted answers." The primary one was: How could this happen? Interestingly, two of the women voted for Bush. Casazza adds, "Even though he should have been our biggest advocate, he turned into one of our biggest adversaries." Together with eight other spouses, parents, etc., they form the Family Steering Committee and lobby for an independent commission, which comes to pass, but fails to deliver the goods. The widows find more useful information in Thompson's timeline, which he compiled using material in the public domain (Thompson also appears in the film). The style of 9/11: Press for Truth couldn't be more conventional--talking heads, television footage, omniscient narrator, relentless score--but the personal approach makes it a valuable addition to the rapidly-growing list of 9/11 documentaries. The point is, to quote Patti Smith, "people have the power"--people like the Jersey Girls, Paul Thompson, and all the other ordinary citizens who have kept pressure on our elected officials and the news media to dig deeper and work harder. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
The Coverup Exposed By The 9/11 Families
"They lied, they all lied." --Patty Casazza (one of the "Jersey Girls")
"We don't know the whole story, not at all" -- Lorie Van Auken (one of the "Jersey Girls")
"9/11 was the biggest 'don't ask-don't tell" --Sally Regenhard, lost Firefighter son.
"Press for Truth" is an astonishing portrayal of the lengths our public servants will go to protect themselves from any accountability. --Scott Horton, Antiwar.com
Although independent investigations began within weeks of both Pearl Harbor and the Kennedy assassination, the same was not true of the attacks of September 11th. Most are unaware that formation of the 9/11 Commission was strongly opposed by many in Washington, including the Bush administration. It was only due to pressure from the 9/11 families, led by a particular twelve calling themselves the Family Steering Committee, that, fourteen months after the attacks, the first hearing finally began. These twelve remained active in monitoring the Commission's investigation, providing a list of hundreds of specific, well-researched questions to the Commissioners. In the end, the 9/11 Commission Final Report failed to answer seventy percent of them.
In 9/11 PRESS FOR TRUTH, five of the most prominent members of the Family Steering Committee, including interviews with three of the "Jersey Girls," tell their story for the first time, providing the most powerful argument yet for why 9/11 still needs investigation. Adapting Paul Thompson's definitive Complete 9/11 Timeline (published by Harper-Collins as The Terror Timeline), the filmmakers stitch together rare, overlooked news clips, buried stories, and government press conferences, revealing a pattern of official lies, deception, and spin.

Essential Viewing...........2007-06-11
...for those that still believe dr evil on kidney dialysis pulled-off the theatrical events of 9/11 and craftily escaped through a labyrinth of underground caves. It's all for the "greater good" don't you know ! Outstanding introduction for the Complacency News Network crowd that still don't see that the Western government and mainstream newsmedia has become sick...very very sick. It would have taken roughly $1-2M to stage the events of that day - compare that to the windfall of BILLIONS that landed upon Halliburton, the oil and defence industries through privatization of Iraqi NATIONAL resources and this administrations lies and obstruction of justice all make perfect sense. 9/11 was PNAC and Karl Rove's rather convenient wet dream and people are stupid - has history taught us nothing? Free yourself from ignorance and view this dvd !
It only scratches the surface..........2007-06-06
This movie was interesting, but didn't nearly have the impact as 9/11 mysteries or loose change. It shows the struggles of the 4 Jersey women in search of answers and the horrible job news media did in covering the story. But, it only scratches the surface and doesn't provides answers.
This is a serious piece of work.......2007-05-24
I've watched a handfull of documentaries on 9-11 such as In Plane Site or Painful Deceptions, but this is the only one that made the hair on my arms stand up. I always thought that conspiracies were truths mixed with assumpitions, but I have changed my mind after watching this. Our Goverment may not have planned the attacks on 9-11, but it is becoming more clear that they opened the door to our skies and allowed it to happen. Corruption is stinking to high heaven and I'm sure when Richard Clark came out and admitted his guilt, President Bush made calls to some powerful friends to see if they could rub him out. To give you an example of some unsolved mysteries..they could not find most parts of the airplanes that crashed on Sept 11 because they said that the heat melted them, but can you believe they were able to find the passport of one of the highjackers?
The point in the movie where I was so frustrated that I laughed was when Bush chose to testify at the 9-11 Commission with Dick Cheney off camera. When asked why he needed Cheney, His answer was," The Commission wants to ask us questions and I look forward to meeting with them." The reporter asked why were they meeting together and not seperatly, His answer," Because it's a good chance for both of us to answer questions that the 9-11 Commission is uhhhh looking forward to asking us and I'm looking forward to answering them." My next question would be... Are you hiding something from us President?
Wake Up People.......2007-05-12
Criminals have infiltrated our government at the highest levels. The people who orchestrated the JFK assignation have gained and consolidated power. They control military and paramilitary forces capable of just about anything as long as the public is unaware.

25th Hour is a eulogy, mourning the New York of post-September 11, 2001, and the regrettable life of one of the city's least reputable citizens. Monty Brogan (Edward Norton) isn't a bad guy--in fact he's a mensch, adopting a battered dog in the film's mood-setting opening scene, and leading a decent life with his girlfriend (Rosario Dawson)... when he's not dealing narcotics. Facing a seven-year prison term, Monty spends his last free night with pals (Barry Pepper, Philip Seymour Hoffman) and visiting his understanding father (Brian Cox), while a Russian drug lord pressures him for getting busted. Lee directs this plotless, no-win scenario as the last gasp of a guy with nowhere to go, and the film (written by David Benioff, from his own novel) suffers from a similar loss of potential, lacking enough focus to make Monty's odyssey compelling. Instead, 25th Hour (which also costars Anna Paquin) rambles from scene to lazy scene, vaguely lamenting that lives have been wasted, some by terrorism, others by self-destruction. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Academy Award(R)-nominee Edward Norton (Best Actor, 1999, AMERICAN HISTORY X) heads an amazing all-star cast in the critically acclaimed Spike Lee (SUMMER OF SAM, DO THE RIGHT THING) film 25th HOUR. In 24 short hours Monty Brogan (Norton) goes to prison for seven long years. Once a king of Manhattan, Monty is about to say good-bye to the life he knew -- a life that opened doors to New York's swankest clubs but also alienated him from the people closest to him. In his last day on the outside, Monty tries to reconnect with his father (Brian Cox, THE BOURNE IDENTITY), and gets together with two old friends, Jacob (Philip Seymour Hoffman, ALMOST FAMOUS) and Slaughtery (Barry Pepper, THE GREEN MILE). And then there's his girlfriend, Naturelle (Rosario Dawson, MEN IN BLACK 2), who might (or might not) have been the one who tipped off the cops. Monty's not sure of much these days, but with time running out, there are choices to be made as he struggles to redeem himself in the 25th hour.

Decent mind trip of a movie........2007-03-31
Gives an interesting look of a post 9/11 drug dealer in New York on his last day of freedom before going to prison. Edward Norton is supported by some really good character actors like Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Barry Pepper and Rosario Dawson.
One of Spike Lee's Best.......2007-03-17
This is an unusual movie for Spike Lee. Its one of the few movies that he has maed that really holds your attention from start to finish and does not feature some snarky slam on white people.
Ed Norton is the star here as a yuppie who has messed his life up. Norton's yuppie is the sort of ordinary guy who most folks can identify with. Norton's character has reached a crossroads where he has three choices: Go on the lam, commit suicide or go to prison where his good looks ensure that he will be subjected to homosexual rape.
Before he makes his decision, Norton's felon wants to see 3 people: His retired fireman father, his best friend and his second best friend. There are other characters who he must deal with such as his girlfriend and some gangsters who push heroin.
In the hands of a lesser filmmaker, all of the above elements would add up to a mess. However, Spike Lee is able to balance everything together into a perfect equilibrium that results in a strong movie.
If you want to see a great movie by Spike Lee, then the 25th Hour is a great choice.
Wondeful ending..........2007-03-10
Great movie. You have doubts about it pretty much until the end. However, when you are done watching it...it hits you that the movie is just simply great.
Movie is about this man named Monty (Norton) who gets caught in his drug dealing and is sentenced to prison for 7 years. His last night, he goes out with friends, does things he wants to do, etc. He basically wants to live the best night before he goes to jail and lives a miserable life there. The other character's stories are briefly told and it works out beautifully because the movie spends just the right amount of time on each one.
Great acting. All characters pretty much played their part to the max. Plot is ok. Its not incredibly unique but it has some good elements. What makes this movie great is its ending. Also, the relationship Monty has with everyone surrounding him is excellent. It deeply shows the feelings he has for each.
Overall, its a pretty good movie. At first its a little slow and some camera angles are awkward at times, but if you want to see something a little different, i really recommend it.
Great Idea Awful filmmaking.......2007-02-28
I expected so much more from this movie considering the actors involved. The actors did a great job, but this film fell way short with story telling and flashbacks. There were too many flash blacks and they came at you in the wrong order.
I also hated the "multiple cuts" in the film that showed different angles of the same scene. These cuts didn't appear to be spliced together properly. It was simply aggravating. I am not aware of the proper technical terms for "multiple cuts" nor the "mirror image" mentioned below (sorry).
The way films were scened were also annoying. The scene at the brokerage firm had a "mirror image" of some characters talking to Barry Pepper's role. It took away from the scene. I am not sure why that "mirroring" was there since there wasn't a glass partition there.
Interesting scenes: Barry Pepper at the firm, Norton and his dad in the car, and Norton looking in the mirror with his character lambasting everyone
The way the film was presented, I thought a high school student put this together. Again, the acting was very good. The story had a good premise and interesting characters, but the execution was lacking.
This film was in need of focus and direction.
One of Lee's best.......2007-01-08
Spike Lee has some great gifts as a film maker. One is his ability to create chracters the audience can identify with and the other is to make the setting a character unto itself. 25th Hour was one of the first films shot in post 9/11 New York. Lee makes full use of this, showing how one city can play a big role in people's lives.
But 25th Hour is not about 9/11. 25th Hour is about friendship. It is about redemption. It is about uncertainty in the future. The film stars Edward Norton as a generally good man who unfortunately engaged in illegal activity and got caught. The film takes place on the final day before he is to serve his sentence and flashes back to the moments that led to his fate. We find him accepting of his fate, only questioning who and what led him to this moment. There is a brilliantly directed, much discussed scene where Norton is cursing the people of NYC, his friends, then finally himself as he stares at a reflection in a mirror. This is one of the single greatest scenes that define a character within a film.
This film has a brilliant script that focuses heavily not only on Norton, but two of his contrasting friends, played brilliantly by Barry Pepper and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Pepper is a sly Wall Street man who tries to be slick and even has an equation for his likelihood of success with women. Hoffman, in an untypically subtle understated performance, plays a shy seemingly shameful teacher. He serves as a counterbalance to Pepper. The way these two characters discuss themselves and their friend help define 25th Hour as a beautiful character piece.
This film's defining theme of an uncertain future is emphasized by the post 9/11 backdrop. One telling scene involves Hoffman and Pepper talking about Norton's possible future while we stare out Ground Zero in a window behind them. An uncertain future indeed...

Completing a trilogy that should be required viewing for all Americans, Unconstitutional explicitly reveals how the USA Patriot Act violates numerous civil liberties guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. Following the equally persuasive documentaries Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election and Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War, this film presents powerful and tragic examples of how the USA Patriot Act--passed with virtually no Congressional debate just 45 days after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01--has been used to justify the unconstitutional arrest of innocent immigrants based on Arab stereotyping; the illegal detention of vaguely defined "suspects" and their improper treatment (including beatings and torture) during extended confinement; prisoner abuse of alleged terrorism suspects in Guantanamo Bay military prison; the allowance of improper search and seizure without due cause; prohibited travel based on racial profiling; bully tactics employed with impunity by local police in efforts to undermine free speech; and other clear indications of the Patriot Act's unconstitutional enforcement. The more personal these stories of violation are, the more gut-wrenching is the realization that U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft--and by extension, the George W. Bush administration--have used the Patriot Act to justify what is essentially a dictatorial police state.
Sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union and full of bipartisan testimony by lawyers, politicians, and victims of Patriot Act abuse, Unconstitutional makes an eloquent case for the careful interpretation of Constitutional law, exploring rising opposition to Patriot Act abuses while exposing how many of our freedoms have been undermined in the name of post-9/11 security. Regardless of your political affiliation, this is a chilling reminder of how seemingly good intentions can corrupt even our most cherished American values. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Unconstitutional: The War on Our Civil Liberties is the new, hour-long documentary from Robert Greenwald - one of the most prolific and progressive producers in Hollywood - in conjunction with the ACLU. This new film, written, directed and produced by Nonny de la Peña, details the shocking way that the civil liberties of American citizens and immigrants alike have been infringed upon, curtailed and rolled back since 9/11 and the USA Patriot Act.
Autumn of 2001 brought us assaults against Americans' comfort zone on many fronts. We learned that we could fall victim to attacks on US soil, and we learned that those guarantees provided to us in the Constitution were equally vulnerable.
Unconstitutional is the third in a series of Public Interest Pictures films that follows Unprecedented: The 2000 Election and Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War. True to their legacy, Unconstitutional provides the facts and stories that illuminate administration lies, wrongheaded policies and the real victims of these actions - the American people.
Here, you'll get the real story behind the USA PATRIOT Act and other administration policies and the gut wrenching stories behind those affected - from law abiding sales clerks to United States Olympians unable to travel. It'll remind you of what America used to stand for and what it seems we're falling for now. In short, this film will affirm why you're angry and give you a tool to help others join your ranks.

It's the end of the innocence.......2007-05-11
As with all documentaries I've seen by Robert Greenwald, he enlists experts to give credible testimony to support the information in his programs. In `Unconstitutional' you are able to hear from experts on legal analysis and constitutional law along with counter-terrorism specialists to confirm the disturbing information about our disappearing rights and civil liberties.
Just over a month after the cowardly attacks of September 11, 2001, American citizens were presented with the `Patriot Act' which was, in essence, protections for citizens against terrorism and tools for the war on terror. If it was such a good plan, why did the Bush administration present it to Congress and tell them not to hold hearings on its contents which would then avoid any public input whatsoever? To add insult to injury, this legislative bill was presented to Congress before anyone had a chance to review its contents but it still passed with overwhelming support. It even contained provisions that Congress previously rejected before 9-11 ever happened. Using the cover of terrorism, the `Patriot Act' largely and inappropriately expanded the power of federal law enforcement which may haunt us for many years to come.
Not long after 9-11 occurred, federal law enforcement began to indiscriminately arrest and detain immigrants from Arab and Muslim countries. This sinister trend began to look suspiciously like ethnic or religious profiling not to mention targeting someone because of stereotypes. Those that were victims of the system were subjected to solitary confinement, inhumane treatment, no contact with the outside world whatsoever, and no due process of the legal system. The phrase `guilty until proven innocent' immediately springs to mind and it fits the equation. The Justice Department even coined a term for this nefarious activity. It was the `hold until clear' policy.
A solution was even found to incarcerate those detained (in the interests of the war on terror) outside of the United States. It was in the form of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. This opens up a completely new level of questionable legalities due to the known information. First, those confined in this facility are not subject to legal restrictions. Secondly, everyone here is not subject to constitutional protections because they are not being held in a United States territory. Lastly, no one is subject to the Geneva Convention because they are not combatants and therefore are not considered prisoners of war. As the war on terror continues, it becomes readily apparent that the government makes the rules as they go to fit their agenda.
When it comes to your expectation of privacy as a citizen, well, that is right out the window. Without probable cause, federal law enforcement agencies can check your employment, medical, and bank records without your approval. Oh, your email traffic and internet browsing history isn't confidential either. And if that's not enough, the `Patriot Act' also allows for secret search warrants of your home and wiretaps of your phones, again without your permission. Big Brother is not only watching you now, it is smothering you and taking away the protections that the Constitution has promised you for over 200 years.
`Unconstitutional' is a very good documentary, in my opinion, and it relates a very serious message that every American citizen absolutely needs to hear. It can also be interpreted as a warning of sorts of what is to come in the future if no attempts are made to change these dangerous policies. A government for the people, by the people, and of the people should be just that and not an all-powerful administration teetering on the edge of totalitarian control. I highly recommend this documentary to everyone and I commend the producer for his courageous work.
Wonderful job documenting frightening loss of our rights.......2007-04-28
Greenwald does it again. He's produced a well-crafted film showing clearly some of the substantial losses and further threats to our civil liberties by the fiercely anti-democratic Bush administration. You see a wide range of folks who've been personally oppressed by the strong-arm, unconstitutional tactics allowed and encouraged by the Bush administration all in the name of fighting terrorism, but not having much effect on terrorism at all.
For those who can't understand how Germany became as it did before and during WWII, watch this film for how insidious the process of losing civil rights in a democracy can be. Obviously the US today is NOT as bad as Nazi Germany, but there are disturbing parallels. You see how perfectly law-abiding citizens have their civil rights increasingly denied or whittled down and how this threatens the very fabric of our fantastic democracy.
I dare anyone to see this film and not come away concerned for the future of our republic if we do not change course soon.
good veiw.......2007-01-11
Well what can i say if you like seeing your rights vanish then see this dvd you know whos hitting you from in front and behind ....lol.
Unconstitutional - The War On Our Civil Liberties .......2006-08-25
Good movie. A must watch for anti-Bush crowd. Sad direction we're headed with this guy in the lead.
Unremarkable.......2006-06-28
Unconstitutional is a movie about an extremely important topic. It's even more topical now in 2006 than when it was produced in 2004 (with some interviews done earlier than that). Unfortunately I found it overall a less powerful message than Greenwald's previous films, Unprecedented, Uncovered, etc. I think it's unlikely to win over those who support the Bush Administration's actions on its own, but it will provide some valuable tidbits of information for those who are already concerned about the loss of our civil rights.
The main problem with the movie (to me) was that the first half of it illustrates its point with examples of a lot of people toward whom Americans who support the administration's "war on terror" simply are not going to feel very sympathetic: Moslem immigrants from the Middle East, Jose Padilla, etc. It's only the second half of the movie that starts to address how this threatens the liberties of everyday, homegrown, law-abiding American citizens. Of course the revelations of what this administration has done have only increased in scope since the movie was produced. This is a movie worth watching--but don't expect to be on the edge of your seat.

The hypocrisy of the U.S. government is powerfully scrutinized in Distorted Morality, a scathing thesis presented by renowned scholar Noam Chomsky. Speaking before an intimate audience at Harvard University on February 6, 2002, Chomsky sets fair and logical parameters to his thesis (namely, we are all hypocrites and, for the purposes of debate, the U.S. government should always be given benefit of the doubt) before outlining, with academic precision and citation of real history (as opposed to biased written history), the reasons why America's post-9/11 war on terror is a logical impossibility.
This, according to Chomsky's carefully supported analysis, is because the U.S. government has been, and continues to be, a major supporter of state-supported terrorism, favoring retaliatory or preemptive aggression over mediation in the world court, and avoiding accountability by excluding itself from the globally accepted definition of terrorism. (To underscore his point, Chomsky repeatedly volunteers his sources, inviting scrutiny at every turn.) With an additional hour-long Q&A session (in some ways more compelling, since it offers Chomsky's response to opposing viewpoints), Distorted Morality deserves the widest possible audience. In the short period between Chomsky's Harvard speech and the start of America's war against Iraq in March 2003, Chomsky's thesis has attained the chilling status of prophesy. Inevitably, Chomsky will be labeled anti-American, but at least his morality is crystal clear, immune to the obfuscation of politics and mainstream news. --Jeff Shannon

Could have been better!.......2007-03-09
The delivery of the video was great, but the content of the video was not that good to me. Which has nothing to do with the seller. I just expected more from Mr. Chomsky, maybe my next purchase of him will be better hopefully.
double standard.......2007-01-09
Chomsky, in his usual dry oratory, gives an undeniably obvious, yet well documented, talk about the American double standard. While espousing anti-terrorism as a thesis, American actions undeniably give wintess to our status as the worst of the terroris states. We are doing what we say we detest, and then use the media to disway the American public with Orwellian doublespeak. Not a speech for the ultra-indoctrinated closed-minded person. this should be viewed by citizens with a critical eye on American government and the real picture in the mirror.
boring.......2007-01-04
He is a great read, in sightful but a terrible speaker and not very photogenic. If it helps you to see the speaker to get what he is saying then perhaps this is for you.
Noam Chomsky - Distorted Morality: America's War on Terror?.......2006-08-25
Could fall asleep easily. Reminds me of poly. sci. 101
The Q & A session in the end is good.
Found in Translation.......2006-08-14
This Noam Chomsky speech on DVD is, as usual, enlightening. Mr Chomsky documents the facts, the truths, and his knowledge of terrorism researched over the past years. This speech and the bonus interview with the Harvard audience all point out to to us how easily manipulated each of us are when we passively "believe" what we are told by our government, rather than seeking to "know" the facts (or simply ask, "wait, is that statement true?"). Mr Chomsky explains patiently, that facts are important. Words and meaning cannot be negotiated by idealogical and political spinners.

Regardless of whether it was "too early" in 2006 to dramatize the events of September 11th, 2001, World Trade Center succeeds as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who served at "ground zero" in the wake of terrorist attacks on the WTC's twin towers in New York City. Removed from the politics of war and terrorism (yet still, like all films, inherently political in expressing its point of view), Oliver Stone's potent drama focuses on the nightmarish ordeal, and subsequent rescue, of Port Authority policemen John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Peña), who were buried deeply within the rubble of the WTC after the twin towers collapsed. Granted, it's only the film's historical context that distinguishes it from any other dramatic rescue story, but in focusing on the goodness of humanity in response to the evil of terrorists who remain unnamed and off-screen, Stone and first-time screenwriter Andrea Berloff create an emotional context as powerful as anything Stone has directed since Platoon. Even as he resorts to some questionable tactics typically lacking in subtlety, Stone refrains from much of the blunt-force filmmaking that has made him a critical punching bag, rising to this challenging occasion with a heartfelt and deeply American portrait of unity - personal, familial, and national. Flaws and all, World Trade Center serves an honorable purpose, reminding us all that for those fleeting days in September 2001, America showed its best face to a sympathetic world. --Jeff Shannon
Description
"World Trade Center is a film about heroism and the best in all of us," raves Good Morning America's Joel Siegel. Academy Award winner, Nicolas Cage stars in the unforgettable true story of the courageous rescue and survival of two Port Authority policemen who were trapped in the rubble on September 11, 2001 after they volunteered to go in and help. Academy Award winning director, Oliver Stone reveals an intimate look at the events of the day as seen through the eyes of the survivors, their families and their rescuers
Customer Reviews:
Everyone Involved In This Exploitation Should Lose Their SAG Cards.......2007-06-25
The only good thing about it is pointing out the importance of the Port Authority PD on that day. Other than that this is a shameful tv movie-style attempt to make money off of an event that does not need Hollywood in any way, shape or form to interpret for us. Film history buffs will note that this is where Maggie Gylenhall sells out. Other than that- don't waste your hard earned money or your shelf space on it.
The horrors of 9/11.......2007-06-16
This movie traces the story of two Port Authority Policemen, played by Nicholas Cage and Michael Pena, who attempt to rescue survivors of 9/11 at the World Trade Center. After they enter the building, it collapses and they are trapped in the rubble. They talk to each other to keep up their courage, but it is evident that they are badly injured. The movie shows flashbacks of the men and their families and also shows the agony their wives are going through as they wait for word of their husbands. The script never properly develops the two main characters in the viewer's mind and this detracts from the overall emotional impact which the movie could have had. However, the movie does have merit and it serves as a tribute to those who risked and lost their lives in this tragedy.
Good Choice.......2007-06-01
Excellent movie. Fast Shipping. Very happy with this purchase. Excellent movie to add to your collection.
Oliver Stone is just out for your money, not the truth.......2007-05-31
Oliver Stone is a movie maker, his bottom line isn't to tell us the truth , its to make as much money as he can. September 11th, being so close to all of our hearts and souls, and it being so soon after the fact, Is a hard story to tell especially in regards to the survivors and victims. Stone did not choose to tell this story, in all its heroism and individual sacrifice, in the light of truth. Instead he decided to bend and twist these men's rescue and the rescuers stories to his "bottom line" agenda. In the movie NYPD officer Scott Strauss is the man who crawls through hell to get to John and Will, in real life it was Chuck Sereika. Chuck had absolutely NO training in search and rescue and extrication, He was a paramedic who thought for sure he was crawling to his own death. In interviews with Chuck after viewing the movie said "the facts are so distorted that he didn't recognize what he was seeing as what he lived through" A journalist who was at ground zero and did first hand interviews of both the rescuers and Will and John at the hospital asked the filmmakers if they wanted his input, and was declined. Oliver Stone chose to focus on the men trapped, flashbacks, family grief instead of on the true life harrowing story of the rescuers and their unbelievable acts.
Stone missed many real facts that should have been put into the movie, and he added some that weren't necessary
1) Karnes, the man who dons his marine garb and sneaks onto ground zero, did not spout religious phrases to passerby's. He refused to be any part of the film.
2) The Other marine who shows up to help Karnes was a black guy, not a white guy
3) They completely left out a firefighter named Tommy Asher, officer Richard Doeler, and John Busching former detective now paramedic in new york. ALL of those men were VITAL to the rescue effort!! Doeler literally DUG out John with his bare hands, with no oxygen tank. It was Doerler, along with two FDNY firefighters, who finally pulled McLaughlin to safety after three hours of digging. In the movie, a team made up solely of firemen extricates McLaughlin. In real life, Doerler came in to relieve many other rescue workers who had been digging for about five hours and working sometimes in 20-minute shifts as the conditions were too difficult to withstand any longer amount of time. Doerler fashioned scoops out of metal scraps, as his usual hand shovel wouldn't fit at first. But none of these dramatic details come through in the movie. Doerler, like Strauss and Sereika before him, had to straddle the trapped officer's body in order to fit in the narrow space, balancing himself on his right arm and reaching out with his left to pull out the mashed concrete and twisted metal bits--a task made more difficult by the fact that he is right-handed. he says that the filmmakers never called him once to hear his story firsthand. Doerler said he hoped his character would be included, not for his own credit but so that the world would know what the Nassau County Emergency Service Unit did that day
4) The wife of Dominick Pezzulo, the NYPD officer who died along side John and Will is outraged at the filmmakers saying "my thing is, this man died for you, how could you do this to this family?" Obviously scarred enough by his death, but also scarred again by the onscreen death as well, and not in a true light.
Most people will watch this movie and take it as the truth, for how could someone make a movie about Sept 11 and leave out crucial, and important details, especially to tell a tale of "heroism and perseverance"?. Clearly it's because the filmmakers didn't care about the people who were really involved, they were out to fill their pockets. Don't buy this movie, don't watch it. Instead I would recommend, if you are curious about the truth of that day, to watch "9/11 The filmmakers commemorative addition" which is footage shot on that very day of the events unfolding and the heroism of the firefighters and NYPD involved
