5 out of 5 stars OH MY GOSH!.......2007-03-13

I saw this first as a play in Mpls. I was so blown away by it and how much it hit a part of me I didn't know I had. I found the play in writing and have enjoyed it time and time again. Now, I am so excited about the movie! It is one you just can't stop enjoying. My husband can never get enough "Top Gun" for me it's "Love Letters".

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful film!.......2006-06-12

This is one of my favorite movies. It's a quiet little film, very different than anything else I've ever seen. It's beautiful, moves me to tears every single time. The story is beautiful and the actors portray their roles perfectly. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars So beautiful.......2006-04-21

This movie was the most... wait i can't go on. I'm still crying. I've never seen anything like this. The plot was beautiful, and the actors made you believe you were there. you know, i think i have to start writing letters to someone like that, I mean i would have to go back to second grade and stuff, but to find that deep true love, oh what a gift. I know I'm not really helping you make a objective decision but please watch this movie!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Touching !!!.......2005-03-23

I, like Kimberly, by chance caught this movie on television about 5 years ago. I cried at the end and kicked myself in the head repeatedly for not taping it !! I have since been searching high and low for a copy of it only to learn today that it is FINALLY available on DVD! I was ecstatic to learn this and am ordering my copy immediately. The characters are realistic, you find yourself feeling what they are feeling. It is a hauntingly beautiful love story which brought me to tears. I highly recommend it. Ladies,(or gentlemen?)if you are feeling sentimental about someone, rent or buy this film, pop open a good Merlot or other libation, press "play" and enjoy!!!You will not be disappointed!!!

5 out of 5 stars Probably Laura Linney's Finest Perfomance on Film.......2005-02-24

LOVE LETTTERS has been on making the boards of theaters large and small across the United States (and translated into many languages and performances throughout the world!) since A.R. Gurney first wrote it in 1989. It is still a popular theater piece for actors from film who want to have public exposure on the stage, for benefits, for young actors in training. Why? Because it is an unassuming, interesting easy to perform in reading fashion by just two actors on a small stage, ultimately fine exploration of the variations love has in the periods of each of our lives. It is unpredictable, clever, well written and very meaningfully tender.

In this teleplay, revised for television screens in 1999 by A.R. Gurney, Stanley Donen directs this fleshed-out performing version with a cast that would be difficult to better. Simply stated, this is a epistolary love story that begins when Andy meets Melissa in second grade and progresses through their very different lives (art school, Yale, Vietnam, alcoholism, divorces, politics, affairs, etc) until Melissa ultimately dies (we know this from the opening scene so this is NO spoiler!).

The technique of mixing actual interaction between the two characters with remembered responses works very well. Part of the reason this small play becomes important is the extraordinary performance by Laura Linney as Melissa. The breadth of her characterization is richly detailed, subtle, vulnerable, and wholly credible. Steven Weber as Andy takes a while to warm to his character (the more difficult of the two with whom to identify) but in the end he gives his best work to date.

This is really a fine little movie, interrupted only by the obvious splices of time where commercials were probably inserted in the original television version. It flows naturally and never ceases to hold your attention and your heart as it is lovingly enacted by Linney and Weber. Grady Harp, February 2005

5 out of 5 stars Affective Minimalist Documentary........2002-11-11

Actors read real letters against a backdrop of authentic images. That's all, and yet it moved me to tears. At this writing, George Bush II just swept the mid-term elections and American rheoric is moving to a second war against Iraq. I just watched this on public television. I wished I had taped it to send my young teen nephews, as an effective essay against war - all wars. Then I read here a 5-Star opinion from one who comes from another perspective on war, and I realize that for or against the Bush wars, this dvd is very moving. Authentic letters and moving images, nothing more. Minimalism at its most effective. See so for yourself. WARNING: Beware some graphic pictures of the dead. Also, one scene details a soldier smoking opium after a battle where he expected to die. It confirms the anguish.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing... touching..........2002-05-28

This is 60 minutes that will leave a lump in your throat. It will make you sick to your stomach, feel patriotic, and humbled all at the same time.

In a nutshell, various actors read real letters written during war time. These letters span many years, from many different conflicts... from the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, up to the Gulf War... these are letters written from GI's to parents, brothers, wives, and girlfriends back home. More often than not, there is a grim footnote attached to some of the readings about how this or that particular GI died a day or two after writing the letter just read. Shocking. Touching.

The only drawback is that some of the actors (such as Bill Paxton, Eric Stoltz, and Kevin Spacey) are used repeatedly for multiple readings. It would have been nice if each letter received individual treatment. Other than that, this is a class act production.

anyone who thinks this is a good transfer must be daft. in addition as was mentioned earlier 11 minutes have been cut and as i remember the film they were some of the "best" scenes if you get my drift. if you want to see the original film this is not it. avoid at all costs.

3 out of 5 stars The Fine Jamie Lee Curtis.......2004-10-18

"Love Letters", starring Golden Globe nominee Jamie Lee Curtis, is an unforgettable love story. It desplicts a young DJ (played by Curtis) who loses her mother to cancer. After her mother's death, she finds some old love letters that contained material she least expected. All were written by a man whom her mother had an affair with in the 1960's. Suddenly, she meets a man with whom she almost instantly falls in love. However, he's married. This forbidden love story leads to a passionate, yet highly emotional film.

While the plot is highly interesting, it often moves too slow. Besides, it has some great scenes; yet, it has some unnecessary scenes. The unnecessary storylines, which do not relate to the overall film theme, often distract from the main theme. However, the romance and sex scenes are as enticing as they should be. They give this film the added rapture that stays interesting. The intensity places itself in areas that keep this film suspenseful. Sometimes, those scenes were placed in the unnecessary ones. Every interesting aspect contains its own spice that never fades through multiple viewings.

The best aspect of "Love Letters" is Jamie Lee Curtis's performance. Though all actors in this film perform well, she gives this film the added individual emotion thoughout. She even gives the slow moving scenes the added glare. After being hailed as a "horror movie queen", she proves that she's mastered the art of hardcore drama.

"Love Letters" will have mixed reactions, but it'll surely be remembered for a long time afterwards. Every fan of Curtis should own this film.

    1 out of 5 stars Edited Version.......2004-10-03

This version is eleven minutes shorter than the orginal version based on the information printed on the DVD and listed in the IMDb. I saw this film a long time ago and was looking forward to seeing it again, but was amazed at how much they had cut out of the movie. The DVD packaging does not state that it is an edited version nor does the information provided by Amazon. They made it a totaly different movie with the editing that was done. I do not recommend this version to anyone. The orginal movie deserves better than this chop job.

2 out of 5 stars Not so thrilling.......2004-01-14

Jamie Lee Curtis looked great stretched across the bed. Her Lover looked appreciative, but the sight of the microphone at the top of the screen destroyed the illusion and any positive impression of the scene. Such lack of care left the entire production lifeless. IMDb lists this movie as a thriller, perhaps because it contains no adventure, action, romance, etc. Waiting for the "thriller" payoff was futile. Without a buildup to the central relationship of the movie, one is left wondering why it occurred. Although the primary difficulty in the relationship is anticipated at length, the encounter that resulted was lacking in tension and passed much too quickly.

If you are not a Jamie Lee Curtis fan you may not want to watch this

    5 out of 5 stars Jamie WOW!!.......2003-08-07

The best movie Jamie ever made. Also the best movie to see her gorgeous body in her prime. The story of her character having sex with a married man and ending up falling in love. This is a must have for Jamie fans. They did a great job with transferring the print to DVD. Also this film came out 1983 not 1984.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Fast forward review.......2006-07-09

This Franco convent film (by "Jesus" Franco I note, heh heh) starts off like a wip flick, as 11 minutes in we get a sort of combined "entry scene" and "examination scene" with the young heroine getting her skirts lifted by a nun who could stand in for the wip evil prison guard. Unfortunately the camera doesn't take the invitation to take a peek, and we have to wait for the 20 minute mark before we get to what could be an "inmate" lez scene with the fresh fish.

But then the wip prison form falls apart, as instead of making out, the (very young and very cute) initiate gets fitted with "crown of thorns" underwear, which could be pretty cool if Franco would have followed through, but no, we just get a string of extremely fakey makeup blood and the scene ends. Bummer. But that's Franco all over. He films something of fine quality and blows it by screwing up the abuse effects, it's almost always that way, a couple exceptions aside.

Then there's some weird scene involving some kind of bowl placed between another (older) nun's legs, which the satan-worshipping nuns are kissing, but I have no idea why or what is going on, maybe if I had the sound up it would help, and if the version I saw wasn't in German of course. Anyway, we do get some really furry implied nun munching going on, but very much R rated, before she's all covered in fake blood for some reason, being pawed by hands with fake hair glued to them. Geez, the plot thickens, as does the spirit gum, readily visible on the fingers.
    Oh, Jess.

Meanwhile we're back to the young one in bed wearing her stylish undergarments still, judging by the blood on her robe, and the same fake blood dripping scene is repeated (he must have run out after the previous scene). Then there's some dream-state implied non-nun munching, before the hairy hands are back and we get some carpet rubbing, with less nap. By the way, slow it way down at this point, shot by shot, and you'll get treated to the girl apparently milking a cow, and missing the bucket. Pretty interesting little side trip to the barn there. Splat.

Someone must have gone out for more fake blood, because all of a sudden we're in a dungeon with a couple of the nuns getting the squeeze put on them. Interesting, I didn't know hair could bleed. Anyway, oops, it was a dream, oh well. Or maybe not, because possibly these same nuns end up hanging around a dungeon later on, liberally swathed in fake blood of course. We never find out what's going on with them. A little R nun lez follows, nothing the horsing around on Night Calls couldn't trumph, and then a totally wasted priest rape scene involving our little cutey with zip nudity at all. Double bummer.

Then, wowzers, it's church orgy time, complete with the spirit gum hands guy back again leering mightily, and brief snippets of nun lez activity, some pretty cute and some rather matronly, including some more shag carpet, but again, all very mild. I'm not sure what was going on there.

Finally, after some escape type plot, we get the young one chained to the wall to be punished, for escaping I think, and the interest level goes way up, because she's really cute. But no, it's Franco of course, and what could be a really outstanding hot iron scene is completely ruined with fake blood and even what appears to be an attempt to simulate heat by using red paint! Oh man, he should be whipped himself for screwing that one up. And not with a trademark Franco bathrobe belt either.

Some more plot, and our cutey is nude and in the inquisition dungeon (I think, judging by the new guys with robes that show up). Redemption for Jess? No, just more of the fresh fake blood supply used up, some of which appears to have been applied like finger paint. Cutey gets stretched, and warmed up some (off camera), confesses, and they let her off for the meantime. Then she tosses a note out of a window, Swamp Castle style. Someday this will all be yours! What, the fake blood? Oh, uh, sorry, I think was curtains in the Python flick. Anyway, Sir Lancelot reads the note and saves cutey from being burned at the last minute, which is a shame, it would have been great fun watching Jess, er, I mean Jesus, messing that up.

Well, what can you say? Just given the scenes that occurred, this could have been a five star sleaze winner, even without the obligatrory convent nun bathing and flagellation scenes. But all that potential is just totally flushed by the master of sleaze disaster. Pitiful, three sleaze stars for the cutey, the implied abuse and the nudity, but two deducted for unholy quantities of fake blood and tragically missed opportunities.

A little R nun lez follows, nothing the horsing around on Night Calls couldn't trumph, and then a totally wasted priest rape scene involving out little cutey with zip nudity at all.
