From the people who created the made-for-TV special-effects extravaganzas Merlin and Arabian Nights comes In the Beginning, the story about the travels and travails of the tribe of Abraham (Martin Landau). Set around the year 2000 B.C., the narrative opens with "Genesis 12," wherein the Lord has kicked Abraham and company out of their country to a land of milk and honey to be named later. In order to keep up the morale of his followers while on the road, Abraham gives a sermon that sums up God's creation of the universe. By illustrating this sermon with stock footage and special-effects shots, the producers are obviously making a connection between sermons of old and popular entertainments of today. From there, the twists and turns of the Old Testament are treated like a soap opera. Family dramas take center stage, whether it's God testing Abraham by telling him to kill his son in sacrifice, Joseph (famous for his amazing Technicolor dream coat) gaining power in Egypt after being sold to slave traders by his brothers, or one of the many other stories of brothers fighting (Cain and Abel, Isaac and Ishmael, etc.). The events that have been visualized in movies before (the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, to name but two) pale in comparison to their earlier incarnations, but the bigger picture is that In the Beginning works best as the Bible for beginners. --Andy Spletzer

Good movie to watch. Full of action. My son likes watching it but not often.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive guide to Transformers.......2007-03-22

My 6-year old son just adores this book. He's had the book for 2 months now and still spends time, every day, pouring over the pictures, cataloging his collection, and making lists of the Transformers he needs to get.

5 out of 5 stars Robots in Disguise.......2007-01-19

Very nice product. Contains lots of special sound effects that kids love!!! Excellent to play with good speakers.

4 out of 5 stars Cybertron.......2005-10-07

Well, all very interesting. About the DVD itself, watch out. It only has episodes 2-5. This means that I will probably never see episode one of this series. But, oh well.

Since that's about all there is to say for the DVD, let me talk about the show. Though it seemed that this would be a continuation from energon/armada, it really isn't. In the show they never say so, and too much would be unresolved. It seems that it is a series unto itself.

From all the transformers I've seen, this series is really good. Compared to the 2 before it, it is outstanding. It makes sense, and it's cool. Finally, there is a series where Megatron can kick Optimus's butt! The animation is an awesome touch, and though the illustated shows are cool, it's nice to have another one since Beast Wars.

The shows have a cool plot. The Autobots need to collect the four Cyber Planet Keys (as Optimus laboriously states in the opening song every weekday) to close the black hole. Megatron wants them to gain power and rule the universe.

The four on this disc are good, being that they set up the whole plot for the series, but are drastically missing episode one. But who cares, they were cool enough for me to get it.

4 out of 5 stars A New Begging.......2005-09-24

First their was G1 that lead to Beast Wars and Machines. Then in a different Universe there was Robots in Disguise, followed by Armada, which led to Energon, well now the Autobots are back on Earth, and want to find these new Planet Kes to save Cybertron from a wormhole, but the Decepticons, lead by Megatron, want them to revive Unicron. This DVD contains episodes 2-5 but episode 1 wasn't dubbed in time so they didn't include it. This is a hole new Transformers Universe, what surprises a hold.

In spring 1993, a year before the Babylon 5 series was launched, the two-hour movie and series pilot "The Gathering" staked out the initial territory, introducing primary characters (some of whom would never appear again) and sketching the alliances and rifts in interplanetary diplomacy. The central story involves the attempted assassination of the newly arrived Vorlon, the mysterious Ambassador Kosh, at the hands of (perhaps) Commander Jeffrey Sinclair (Michael O'Hare). This is the reedited cut released on video, a stronger, more engaging film than the original, but still a broad first stab at characters that would be redefined through the course of the show's run.

"In the Beginning," produced between the fourth and fifth seasons, packs all the history alluded to in "The Gathering"--and more--into a prequel stuffed to the hatches with the epic doings of Earth, Minbar, Narn, and Centauri in the days before the Babylon stations were built. Infused with epic sweep and storytelling confidence by producer-writer Michael J. Straczynski and his cast and crew, it's an elegant, compelling addition to the Babylon 5 universe and a dramatic highlight of the series. It's not an ideal introduction, though, as it gives away the shadowy history slowly revealed through the first three seasons. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars a new idea.......2007-01-16

this movie gives the real grounding to the whole series, and does an excelent job of laying the foundations for the whole series.

5 out of 5 stars You see I was there at the dawn of the Third Age..........2006-12-18

What a strange release this is, especially if you're new to Babylon 5. Here we have the original series pilot "The Gathering," introducing us to the fantastical B5 universe, and one of the outstanding highlights of the entire 5 year run, the stuffed-to-the-gills-with-spoilers-and-plot-revelations film, "In The Beginning," both on the same double sided disc.

And if that wasn't odd enough, "The Gathering" seems to be JMS's "Special" edition, complete with Chris Franke soundtrack, but shown in the original full-frame ratio, instead of a fake matted letterbox format... this is strangeness of almost Kosh-like proportions!

Oh well, after seeing the entire 5-year run on TV, plus the attendant films and the sadly short-lived "Crusade" spin-off, it's funny to watch "The Gathering" again. You can see the B5 universe coming together, although there are a few stumbles; even in this re-edited/tightened version it's still a little stodgy. However this is really only apparent with the perfect 20/20 hindsight that comes from having watched the entire five-year series!

Michael O'Hare's "Sinclair" is somewhat wooden, Jerry Doyle's "Garibaldi" is definitely Bruce Willis-lite; if he'd growled "Yipee-ki-yay MoFo!" after dispatching a bad guy I wouldn't have been in the least surprised! Mira Furlan's "Delenn" and Andreas Katsulas' "G'Kar" both had noticeable cosmetic changes to their appearances once the series proper got underway. In particular, the pilot Delenn had quite masculine features, as was the original intention, especially, it seems, in profile, and Furlan herself appeared to be consciously reaching for `weird' in her performance; the Series 1 Delenn was obviously female, with the `weird' factor toned down considerably. G'Kar's makeup also changed, and became much smoother and `natural' in the series, especially `round his jawline and chin; Katsulas' wonderful characterization of G'Kar, however, was nailed from the very beginning!

The one character that seemed to explode onto the screen fully formed and exquisitely realized, was Peter Jurasik's "Londo Mollari." Watching "Gathering" again I was amazed at how Jurasik created "Londo" so completely; the good-natured bantering with Garibaldi, the dry humor, the sadness, the pain, the pride, the crushing sense of loss and despair at what his people had become, the dark introspection, guilt over his family's past, the vicious politicking that drives the upper echelons of Centauri society. His "My god, man! We've become a tourist attraction..." and, "Nice shark, pree-ty shark..." speeches are superb performances, foreshadowing - sorry! - the entire Mollari arc for the next five years!

"In The Beginning" is set between the events of Series 4 and Series 5, and starts with Londo telling a story, "...a true story," to two children in the Emperor's palace, of how the Humans changed the universe, "...but in doing so, paid a terrible price." Once again a simply exquisite performance by Jurasik, the film starts like a dark fairytale, full of foreboding and menace, as Londo recounts how the Humans - "Ah, arrogance and stupidity all in the same package. How efficient of you!" - were almost exterminated after an unprovoked attack on a Minbari starship, ten years prior to the commissioning of Babylon 5 itself.

For anyone new to the series watching this film would be a disaster, as it recaps so much of what went before, and even has a major revelation about one of the central characters that certainly took my breath away the first time I saw it! The CGI/SFX on "Gathering" was cutting edge for the small screen at the time, but does look rather dated today, "Beginning," on the other hand, looks beautiful, as you would expect; five years is an absolute eternity in the field of computer generated visual effects!

As I said, a very strange release indeed, but even with "Gathering" being a work in progress, it's essential viewing for those looking to get into the Babylon 5 universe for the first time, as it introduces the five main space-faring races, the Earth Alliance, Minbari, Centauri, Narn, and ever mysterious Vorlons. It also sets up the main characters from each race, and introduces us to the interstellar political intrigue that would drive the story forward for the next five wonderful years!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Science Fiction TV.......2006-07-03

Anything that involves Babylon 5 is tops according to me. This single CD is included in the "Movie Pack" of Babylon 5 disk and is not needed separate unless one is completely obsessed in getting all that is Babylon 5.

4 out of 5 stars "The Gathering" is worth it for Newbies to the show........2005-02-10

The B5 Pilot, "The Gathering" is low budget, poorly acted, and not very well written. Still, if you've never watched Season One of Babylon 5, you have to see this movie. The characters refer to the events in this pilot all the way into the final season. You don't really want to see the rest of the movies unless you've seen this show, so I don't recommend getting the Movie Box Set, because the other B5 films are full of spoilers. The best thing to do is to order this DVD used (or rent it). After you watched the whole series, when you buy the movie box, sell this DVD to someone else who is just starting out on the show.

"In the Beginning" is full of spoilers, so I have no idea why they packaged it with "The Gathering". I enjoyed it, but while watching it, it felt a bit like watching a clip show. The movie basically glues together the final battle between Earth and Minbar, showing exactly what happened. Since what happened at this event is a secret for much of the show, I don't recommend watching this until you're deep into Season 4.

1 out of 5 stars What a rip off.......2004-11-19

Ok.. thats a bit strong, but I bought this when it came out, assuming the other movies would be released seperately. Now I have to buy "B-5: The Movies" which includes these two. Just ignore this DVD collection and get the 5 movie set. END OF STORY. Might as well End of Life this one.

This 1987 documentary is distinguished by both its smart narrative premise and wonderful performance footage of Elvis Presley at the dawn of his remarkable career. With the King's melodramatic life already a familiar subject for film and print biographies, producer-directors Alan and Susan Raymond instead shaped this hour-long profile around the year that saw the charismatic Memphis singer's eruption as a pop sensation. By taking that selective path, and focusing tightly on Presley's crucial transition to a major record deal, national media exposure, and the first decisive steps in his subsequent movie career, Elvis '56 achieves a unique cohesion while legitimately celebrating a remarkable period of growth.

With the Band's Levon Helm narrating in his salty Arkansas drawl, the story effectively conveys Elvis's Southern perspective, while evocative use of Alfred Wertheimer's celebrated black-and-white still portraits sustains a visual style carrying over to the program's real high points: early stage and television appearances by Presley and his original trio, later augmented into a quartet. Among the highlights are historic slots on Milton Berle's and Steve Allen's variety shows: we see the joyous physicality that made the Berle performance a topic of outrage (and, of course, a swoon-worthy moment for female fans), as well as Allen's glib solution to censors' worries, forcing a static, tail-coated Presley to sing "Hound Dog" to a basset hound. --Sam Sutherland

Description

1956 was Elvis Presley's breakthrough year, and this program takes you back, including his early television performances on the Dorsey Brothers Show and the Ed Sullivan Show, and an entire hour of rare footage and performances captured during the amazing year when Elvis Presley became not only a star, but a phenomenon.

5 out of 5 stars Takes me back!.......2007-07-02

The first time I heard Elvis they were playing his hit song over the pa system at the PX in Turkey and I was probably [...] I think it was Hound Dog...I didn't get to hear him again until the following year when Love Me Tender came to the Base Theater in Athens, Greece, and then he went into the Army and I became a teenager...and the rest is history! I was too busy putting myself through college and life after high school, so I missed out on those years too! Now I'm 62, retired, and reliving my youth!
This filled me in on his earlier hits and his beginnings. I never saw him on TV as we didn't have that overseas at the time. I really love this DVD; well done!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent way to learn about Elvis.......2006-12-03

The first record I ever bought was the 78-rpm version of 'Heartbreak Hotel', so 1956 is a special year for me. This documentary does a great job of bringing back the feeling of what it was like in this early era of Rock 'N' Roll. This really shows Elvis at his peak. I would highly reccomend it.

5 out of 5 stars Old Fart.......2006-08-22

I remember watching E on a B&W telly in a drug store while 10 of
us shared a coke as a reason for being there. Who had a name
like "ELVIS" in 1955. Nobody I know and certainly not in Canada.
I watched the Dorsey Brothers Show and E and the hair on the back of my neck stood up. The number 1 song on the "Hit Parade" was
Doris Day, "How Much is that Doggie In the Window"

As John Lennon says during the intro to ELVIS'56- "before
Elvis, there was nothing"

Old fans will love this DVD. New fans will appreciate the changes.

Old and new will get to know the world shaking change E made.

One of the very best E early years docu/dvds

4 out of 5 stars Interesting early Elvis.......2005-07-10

I had never seen any early Elvis before. It was a treat!! Quality is not the greatest, but then it's old technology. Certainly worth the price if you want to "know" who Elvis is/was.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis Presley's Early Years - A Terrific Video.......2005-02-17

This video of Presley's early career is wonderful. It may be the best of all the Presley videos. Don't miss it. You will be there for the early music and the meteoric rise of this rock n roll legend. The quality of the reproduction is excellent for the time period 1956. On this video you will see Elvis Presley at his best before he was spoiled by all the fame and money that came later in his life.

John Huston adapted the first 22 chapters of the Book of Genesis in this mostly silly film that takes us from Creation through Noah's Ark through Abraham's near-sacrifice of son Isaac. This is one of Huston's more personally distant projects, à la Annie or Victory; and for the most part you'd barely know there was even a director involved. On the other hand, Huston does provide some of the only liveliness on screen, playing Noah. --Tom Keogh

Description

The greatest stories of the Old Testament are brought to the screen with astounding scope and power in this international film which depicts the first 22 chapters of Genesis. This is the spectacular story of man's creation, his fall, his survival and his indomitable faith in the future. From the film's opening amidst cosmic chaos, to its lingering message of hope and salvation, "The Bible" stands as a monumental motion picture achievement.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Part Brilliant, Part Disappointing.......2007-05-18

Long cast aside by "critics" as a cinematic BOMB, this movie does have its moments. Standout scenes are the death of Abel by Cain, Adam and Eve being driven from the Garden of Eden, Abraham's visit from the Angel of God and the gathering of men at Sodom, blinded by the two Angels. The Sodom scene, with all its wickedness, would be considered "politically incorrect" by Hollywood today, but is a directorial masterpiece. The Noah's Ark gathering of the animals is a commendable assemblage of creatures, but John Houston's portrayal of Noah is much too comical for such a strong Biblical patriarch. Adam and Eve seemed too mechanical, in a very pale Eden, in what should have been a beautifully breathtaking opportunity for the cinematographer of Paradise. And according to scripture, Isaac was probably a bit older than the small actor we see in the film. But George C. Scott believably delivers as Abraham; especially when about to give his son as a sacrifice. Not the best adaptation of Bible stories, but at least the Hollywood of old, was well aware of a large audience for sacred things it seemingly ignores today.

one of the last of the biblical epics, this was a bomb in its initial release, and deservedly so. the movie doesnt know whether it is de mille or italian realism, and most of the sequences (adam & eve, tower of babel) are either laughable or langorous (george c scott & ava gardner as abraham & sarah). yet stuck in the middle is a fine half hour sequence of the story of noah, with director john huston casting himself in the one strong sequence in the movie: replete with the right mix of humor and awe. that half hour isnt enough to recommend buying or renting the dvd, but if you can catch it on tv some day, its worth a half hour of your life.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE VERY BEST VERSION EVER MADE........2007-02-20

THE ACTING AND COSTUMES ARE EXCELLENT. THE MUSIC SETS THE MOOD PERFECTLY FOR EACH STORY. THE SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE GREAT. THIS IS A MUST SEE FOR BIBLE ENTHUSIASTS. THE ACTING IS VERY GOOD. YOU FEEL AS THOUGH YOU ARE PRESENT WHEN THE EVENTS ARE OCCURRING.

1 out of 5 stars twice the cheese on one disc, or two bombs for one.......2006-06-13

these two movies are chuck at his worst! not once in these two movies is there and dose of humor or anything that passes for the laws of nature. and while i do like mr.norris and his movies these two are not even worth his or our time. between the first three chuck has saved his men, himself, and his son,so if they do anymore i guess he'll be going back to get his comb he droped in the bush!!
SKIP IT!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Chuck missing in Action twice again .......2005-10-29

Just like I reviewed in the First one the Picture and sound quality are excellent and Chuck being in all his greatness and 10 15 years later he will then become Walker Texas Ranger

4 out of 5 stars Norris's time.......2005-09-30

When we say Chuck Norris we always thinking on Missing in Action movies.I recently bought MIA 2 and 3 at Amazon to complete my trilogy, here the only one released is the first part. For many people MIA 2 is the best of the series, for me part three is the better.
Why? Because it have more action than the others two, MIA and MIA 2 are good too but the last part in my personal opinion it have more explosions and action sequences.Anyway the complete trilogy is good.If you want to see Chuck Norris in his best moment watch MIA trilogy, Delta Force 1 and 2, Invasion USA and The Hitman.

5 out of 5 stars a great action collection.......2005-09-25

Missing in Action 2. The last part of the movie was a classic to remember. Braddock and Yen going add it in a showdown to finish. Braddock whack Yen like a dirty rag on the floor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Acting, Great Sets, Costumes and Scenery! Faithful to Scripture, Overall!.......2005-09-03

I like this DVD. Martin Landau is once again good in yet another Bible movie for him. The best treat is Jacqueline Bisset as the prettiest Sarah that I have seen in a Bible DVD!

They show Abraham telling Bible stories to his people, then they move into the Abraham story, and on through the story of Joseph. It's an acceptable made-for-TV attempt with familiar actors and a decent attempt to be true to the essence of the Bible stories.

This film from 2000 is from Hallmark/FHE/Artisan, who made a monster the year before, with their 1999 version of NOAH'S ARK, starring Jon Voight and Mary Steenburgen. STAY AWAY from that version of Noah's Ark! But it is really surprising that a year later they made this one, IN THE BEGINNING, which is actually quite good.

4 out of 5 stars good cast and above average TV production.......2004-07-26

Originally a 4-hour miniseries for NBC, with a large international cast of well-known actors, this telling of parts of the first five books of the Bible is interesting, and on the whole flows well, though it crams a lot of story into one film, therefore skipping many major events.
It starts with Abraham, as he travels to the land of Canaan, in about 2000 B.C., and along the way he recites the narrative of the Creation (which has some nice visuals), the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve, their temptation (the fruit here looks more like a small fig in a very thorny tree) and their expulsion from Eden.

There are some fine performances, among them Martin Landau as Abraham, Jacqueline Bisset as Sarah, Bill Campbell as Moses, Amanda Donohoe as Potiphar's wife, and Fred Weller as Jacob. Eddie Cibrian as Joseph seems at first out of place, looking more like a modern day hunk, but he grows with the part, and has the most touching scene in the film, when he is reunited with his father Jacob. In the small part of Jethro, the great Alan Bates is marvelous. Other name actors include Diana Rigg (mature Rebeccah), Geraldine Chaplin (Yocheved), David Warner (Eliezer), and Christopher Lee is a theatrical, entertaining Ramses I.

At times there's quite a bit of license taken with scripture (for instance, there is some incredulous dialogue between Moses and Jethro after the parting of the sea, where Moses doesn't seem to have much faith in God), and similar to other TV Bible films, the parts that take place in Egypt are full of gaudy sets and costumes, as well as some characters who have an almost Alice Cooper look in the makeup department, especially Pharaoh's magician (Victor Spinetti).
Filmed in Morocco, with lovely cinematography and score, this one is certainly worth a rental if you like Bible epics.

5 out of 5 stars THIS WAS A GOOD MOVIE!.......2004-03-08

I recommend this movie to anyone who desires to know more about the events that occurred in the Old Testament, this is a close as you'll get to the actually truth. I bought the VHS and was so pleased with the characters, costumes, location and scenes that I loaned the movie to friends and other family members. Well, somewhere along lending it out someone liked it so much never returned it to me. So, I purchased another one. I also own the Ten Commandments and it is a good movie as well, however, if you know the Bible, you will also know that Mose had no romantic relationship with an Egyptian princess. (this love triangle was added to the movie). All I say is if you want to know what really happened in biblical times, buy this movie. I'm sure after you've seen the movie it will build up your curiousity to read the bible. It's a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Yeah! It's about time!.......2003-05-14

I was very impressed with In the Beginning. Are the others reviewers insane? The Prince of Egypt or The Ten Commandments are better films? The Prince of Egypt places the story of the Exodus to about 1220 B.C. and not 1446 B.C. and Heston's Egypt is about as antiseptic as a floor of an operating room. You could perform surgery on those palace floors. Landau and the others are great. At least the script writers read the book you know, you've heard of it, The Bible. In the Beginning is biblically accurate and outdoes the current Jesus films, the Noah's Ark fiasco and some of the TNT films. This gives me firm confidence that NBC has writers that are literate unlike the other networks.

2 out of 5 stars Great Beginning...but...not so great after that..........2002-04-10

I originally watched this miniseries when it aired on NBC in the fall of 2000. I specifically remember watching the first 2 hours and realizing I could find a better way to spend my time than sitting through the last two hours.

The performances are uniformly mediocre, with only Martin Landau standing out as Abraham. The scenes of creation, including Adam and Eve, as well as the Fall, are quite nicely told through flashback, as Abraham tells the story around a campfire. But, it quickly falls apart after that.

If you really want to watch the story of Joseph, Moses, and the rest, I recommend watching the animated films JOSEPH and PRINCE of EGYPT. If you want to watch a classic story of Moses, go with THE TEN COMMANDMENTS--it's a classic that still rates close to 5 stars!

The inner ring of Japanese defense in the Pacific lay across five island groups. Control of these islands would open up the road to the Philippines, allow American B-29 Super fortresses to wage unrestricted bombing of Japan, and set the stage for the conquest of the last two innermost islands, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

In this program, we follow the operations of the U.S. Marine Corp as they crack the inner ring of Japan's defensive perimeter and prepare for the final assault on the Japanese home islands.

The very brief, but very educating scenes on opening guitar riffs of 'Move it' alone justifies the price. I think George Harrison would agree on this.

If you don't know much about Cliff's early career than this documentary might have some interesting information for you.
But if you are a Cliff fan that is expecting to see some really great, vintage footage of Cliff in the 1950's.....pass on this DVD. There is not ONE old clip in here that is in full. All the old clips are 30 seconds long then they cut away again. The quality of the old footage is very bad as well. Very dark and cloudy looking. Really wanted to enjoy this but it's just plan bad!

    2 out of 5 stars What a shame!.......2007-05-27

This dvd has a lot of wrong information. First, on its cover there is an information that it has Luciano and Culture performances, however, when you play the dvd you don't see any Luciano and Culture's performances. Besides that on its cover it says that it has 3hrs of running time, but in fact, it has only 50 minutes. The Chaka Demus'perfomance was too short. The Great Gregory Isaacs sings only 2 songs. The only good thing about this dvd is the Morgan Heritage performance.
If you are waiting to watch a great dvd, don't buy it. Save your money.
