In retrospect, George Seaton's adaptation of The Country Girl seems like the movie that was made to prove that both Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly could act. The tale of an alcoholic actor and singer (Crosby) and his long-suffering wife (Kelly) whose marriage is put to the test when he gets a second chance at stardom, Clifford Odets' drama is chock full of twists and turns designed to give actors a grueling workout, with its hidden secrets, tortured love story, and frank depiction of the horrors of alcohol abuse. Crosby and Kelly sank their teeth into the meaty roles with gusto (it helped that a rock-solid William Holden was there for each to spark off of), and both were showered with accolades that remained high points of their careers. Crosby was lauded with kudos for turning his charming persona inside-out, but it was Kelly who stole the show, possibly because at the time she was one of the hardest working women in show business. In 1954, the actress appeared in four films, including the Alfred Hitchcock classics Dial M for Murder and Rear Window, and finally ascended to leading-lady status after her stellar supporting turns in High Noon and Mogambo. In typical Hollywood fashion, though, it was only when Kelly shrouded her breathtaking beauty in plain clothes and a dowdy hairdo that she was taken seriously and awarded a Best Actress Oscar--one of the most highly contested ever, as she beat out comeback star Judy Garland's ferocious performance in A Star Is Born. --Mark Englehart

The hit Broadway musical from the 1940s gets a lavish if not always exciting workout in this 1955 film version directed by old lion Fred Zinnemann (High Noon). Gordon MacRae brings his sterling voice to the role of cowboy Curly, and Shirley Jones plays Laurie, the object of his affection. The Rodgers and Hammerstein score includes "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," and "People Will Say We're in Love," and Agnes DeMille provides the buoyant choreography. Among the supporting cast, Gloria Grahame is memorable as Ado Annie, the "girl who cain't say no," and Rod Steiger overdoes it as the villainous Jud. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Oklahoma!.......2007-06-26

Though the film is long and contains a fairly high corn factor, it's also visually stunning, and truly soars whenever the music and dancing starts, with peerless renditions of "People Will Say We're In Love," "The Surrey With The Fringe On The Top," and the immortal title tune. The dance numbers, choreographed by Agnes de Mille, are original and exuberant, while Steiger and Gloria Grahame turn in fine performances, respectively playing the dastardly Jud and the naively amorous Ado Annie, "the girl who can't say no."

5 out of 5 stars One of the all time great musicals.......2007-05-13

The music is great as well as the singing and acting. This movie is a visual treat for the eyes and it has great dancing as well. If you love musicals (particularly those made in the 40's 50's and 60's) than you will love this movie. While this movie has a dark side for the most part it reflects the optimism that seems to be so much a part of the American character. Watch it you will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars An American original.......2007-04-05

This version of "Oklahoma" will always remain my favorite. Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones are sheer perfection. Every single Rodgers and Hammerstein song including "Oh What a Beautiful Morning,""People Will Say We're in Love," "The Surrey With the Fringe on Top," "I'm Just a Girl Who Can't Say No," and the title song are romantic, humorous, original and beautifully sung and directed. This show is considered the quintessential American musical and after experiencing the amazing on-location sets, costumes, choreography by Martha Graham, dream sequence, and charming and delightful overall mood of this movie, you'll be humming these tunes for days!

So you know a few line dance steps and you want to get out on the dance floor. Essential Line Dances (Vol 1) is for you!

Shawn Trautman introduces the beginner/intermediate dancer to several popular line dances in this volume. If you already know the basics of line dancing it will be easy for you to follow along the first time through as Shawn breaks the dances down step by step.

Even if you haven't danced before, each step is explained in detail and can be learned after a couple viewings (and with practice, of course!)

In addition to teaching the basic steps, Shawn offers alternative steps depending on your dancing level. There's something for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Great for learning.......2006-11-06

Just like Line Dance 101, this DVD was very well received. My wife and I both loved it. It was a little faster paced than 101, but we felt prepared and could keep up. The dances are fun and presented very well. We like the way Shawn breaks down the dances and then has you learn with him. We liked Essential Line Dances Volume 2 for the same reasons.

5 out of 5 stars It's Great Exercise!.......2006-06-28

I've been looking for a way, other than the treadmill, to get some exercise indoors and I remembered what fun and what great exercise line dancing was. A long time ago I used to go to a country line dancing bar and I had so much fun there. I searched the internet for a Learn to Line Dance DVD and decided to get this one because I knew if I liked it, there were more in the series.

I've gone through the DVD two times now and I feel like I can do the dances to "real" music already. The dances are broken down in a way that make them very easy to learn. You can also get a play list of suggested music on Shawn Trautman's website to practice the dances with.

I do have to admit, I feel a little ridiculous line dancing all by myself in the living room. But who cares, right? Now that I have the play list I'll just turn the music up loud enough so that I won't hear the neighbors laughing at me when they drive by and see me through the windows.

3 out of 5 stars Country Girl.......2007-04-09

This was not an exceptional acting performance on Grace Kelly's part, but Bing Crosby did wonderfully. The film was slightly depressing, and the plot moved slowly. Overall, a decent film, but one only to be watched once--not a fun "watch ten times" film.

4 out of 5 stars Solid but Dated.......2006-12-05

So much of Holden's work seems dated. Very midcentury American man. Not very daring at all. Apparently Holden never thought much of acting and actually used it as an excuse to travel and raise money for his charities. Bing Crosby plays a convincing sad sack and hottie Grace Kelly is fine as his long suffering wife. Suffers from the values and attitudes of the time.

4 out of 5 stars Three Top Stars Giving Their All In Gritty and Non Sentimental Backstage Drama.......2006-09-23

"The Country Girl", starring the powerhouse acting trio of Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and William Holden has often been unfairly remembered only for the fact that it won Grace Kelly a "surprise", Best Actress Oscar that year over popular favourite Judy Garland who was considered a sure thing for the honour for her legendary return to the screen in the remake of "A Star is Born". However after viewing this seldom seen film last night I can see that it most definately stands up on its own merits as an assured and at times stark illustration of the life behind the glitter of the New York Stage. "The Country Girl", with its rather misleading title not only boasts the beautiful Grace Kelly in her most non traditional and unglamourous role but also displays some of the finest work achieved by both leading men with Bing Crosby in particular also playing dramatically against his usual screen type in the role of a washed up alchoholic actor being given one final chance at a Broadway comback.

3 out of 5 stars The Most Depressing Musical Ever.......2006-09-01

This isn't the kind of movie where the characters break into song at the drop of a hat, but there are a lot of musical numbers. Bing sings for his audition, has a flashback of himself recording a song, sings as part of the broadway show he is starring in and he even duets with a cabaret singer at a bar. None of the music is especially interesting and it sometimes slows the momentum of the story.

As far as the acting goes, everyone comments on Kelly and Crosby, but Holden is the pro here. He gets taken for granted because he's done this role so many times and he makes it look easy. Granted, Crosby is a revelation, but it's more because he is playing so much against type. And Kelly is doing her best Ingrid Bergman impersonation. I swear she even takes on Bergman's accent. It just left me thinking how much better Bergman would have been in the role. The fact that she won the Oscar just shows that politics win Academy Awards. Any of the other four actesses were more deserving.

The movie itself has a good story with some surprises, though it's a little stagy. Worth a look to see Holden showing them how it's done.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Character Study.......2006-08-03

It took a while for me to shine to "The Country Girl". It moves at a deliberate pace and there is a certain staginess to the proceedings. There is a virtue to the pacing for any discriminating viewer. Our assumptions about the characters and their relationships are dropped on their head and our initial reactions are not the correct ones. Some reviewers called the film drab but I would say it has a gritty realism. The three principals here are superb. Bing Crosby gives probably his best performance ever as the dependent alcoholic. Forget the Oscar. Forget the drab clothing and lack of makeup. Grace Kelly here delivers a performance of great complexity as the enabling spouse who has finally gotten to the end of her rope. The glue to the film is William Holden, the theatre director who acts as a surrogate for the audience in trying to sort out Crosby and Kelly's less than ideal relationship. An interesting and provocative film all around.

Judy Garland is at the peak of her charm and appeal as the title character of Presenting Lily Mars. The 19-year-old aspiring actress has great hopes for the future but can't seem to catch a break even when a Broadway producer (Van Heflin) returns to her small Indiana town for a family visit. Undeterred, she follows him to New York and earns a small part and a romance is sparked, but when the leading role unexpectedly opens up, will the talented youngster be ready? Presenting Lily Mars was released in 1943, the same year Garland would do her last collaboration with Mickey Rooney (Girl Crazy) and between her first significant adult roles, For Me and My Gal (1942) and Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). What the movie doesn't have is a lot of great music. Many of the songs are performed by other people, and while the few numbers Garland sings are gold, the songs themselves can't match the Gershwin and Arlen standards in many of her other films. The most notable is Brown & Freed's "Broadway Rhythm," which everyone should recognize from Singin' in the Rain--it's a rousing closer by Garland backed by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra. With Marta Eggerth as Garland's operatic rival, and future jazz singer Annie Ross as Garland's singing and piano-playing younger sister. --David Horiuchi

Description

Presenting Judy Garland! Whether swinging a hot number with Bob Crosby's orchestra or emoting a hilariously hammy version of Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene, Judy is a delight as a stage-struck Hoosier in this charming film based on Booth Tarkington's novel. Lily just knows she has the talent to light up the Great White Way, so when a big Broadway producer (Van Heflin) visits her hometown, she expends all the candlepower of her charisma to impress him. He's not impressed. He heads back to New York and Lily follows, thumbing her way east on what she's sure is a one-way trip to instant stardom. At a mere 20 years old, Judy had already reached stardom. Presenting Lily Mars proves why, showcasing her once-in-a-generation voice, gift for comedy and enduring movie magnetism. Break a leg, Lily!

5 out of 5 stars A Dilly of a Movie..........2007-07-04

My Favorite Judy Garland Movie. She is Beautiful and what a voice. My best friends and I get together for his birthday every year and watch this movie while eating his version of Lilys star cake. A must see for all Garland fans.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-04-04

This is a movie that I had been looking for to come out on DVD. My old VHS was worn out from so many viewings, so I was thrilled to receive this DVD!

This one is a must for any Garland fan.

4 out of 5 stars good little known judy movie .......2007-03-13

I found this movie a long time ago on tape and later on tv. i was glad it came out on dvd. It is a little known Judy movie, but she looks wonderful in it. It is one her funniest movies, she is wonderful of a midwestern girl wanting to be an actress, but has to go where it can happen, New York to live in the "incubator" with her boughten hats. it is a charming film that all Judy Garland fans must see. The ending alone is worth it when she dances beautifully. It was too bad that this and the Clock didn't have a commentary from John Fricke, who knows everything about Judy. It would have a nice bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Garland Gets Glamour.......2007-03-08

This delightful MGM musical was Judy Garland's first opportunity to rise above her little girl image and appear as a glamorous young woman. She romances older man, Van Heflin, and heads off to NYC to conquer Broadway. She eventually succeeds all around but not before hitting a few snags along the way. All is carried out in a humorous and fun-loving spirit. The supporting cast members are likable and clever without too much hokekum. The musical numbers are relatively few for a Garland movie and only the finale is a production piece. The songs are not Garland mainstays or any that she ever sang later in her career but are fresh and pleasantly entertaining. My favorite is the impromtu "Every Little Movement" in which Lily Mars lovingly duets with the theatrical char-woman, Connie Gilchrist, after she catches her sleeping in the theater. Judy was truly beautiful at 21 and her performance here marks the beginning of her career as an adult at MGM.

4 out of 5 stars JUDY FLIRTING????.......2007-03-04

The scene in the garden where Judy is flirting with Van is a cinematic gem! Its easy to see why so many men fell in love with her ! At 20 years old she seemed to be in complete control of her womanly powers over men. Somewhere along the road she lost it and thought of herself as ugly. At least we get to keep her (thanks to movies), as beautiful ,vivacious and sparkling !!!!!

Norma Rae: Veteran director Martin Ritt (Sounder) directed this earnest and very popular tale of a naive textile worker, widow, and mother in the U.S. South who becomes empowered by standing up for her rights in the workplace. Sally Field stars in the Oscar-winning title role as a woman who has been content to go along with the status quo until she realizes that she is entitled to more and can succeed if she stands up for herself. Her fight to improve deplorable working conditions at the textile plant causes a rift between her and the people closest to her, but her determination brings a new awareness to her and to all the women with whom she works. Ritt's typical, socially conscious story uses the politics of Norma Rae's struggle and also its emotions to build the film to a rousing climax. --Robert Lane

Working Girl: Melanie Griffith had a fling with stardom in this Mike Nichols comedy about an executive secretary (Griffith) who can't get her deserved shot at upward mobility in the brokerage industry. Hardly taken seriously by male bosses, things aren't really any better for her once she starts working for a female exec (Sigourney Weaver, never more delightful), a narcissist with a boy-toy banker (Harrison Ford) and a tendency to steal the best ideas from her underlings. When Weaver's character is laid up with a broken leg, Griffith poses as a replacement wheeler-dealer, flirting with Ford and working on a new client who doesn't suspect the deception. Nichols brings a lot of snap and sass to Kevin Wade's smart script about chafing against class restrictions and perceptions. Sundry scenes are played quite charmingly, especially those of Griffith and Ford's mutual pickup in a bar and Joan Cusack's championing of Griffith's crusade. Nominated for Best Picture, Director, Actress (Griffith), and two Supporting Actress awards (Weaver, Cusack); Carly Simon's song "Let the River Run" won the Oscar. --Tom Keogh

You'd never guess it from the title, but Courage Mountain is a sequel to children's classic, Heidi. In this handsome production, filmed in Europe and set during World War I, a teenaged Heidi (Juliette Caton) leaves Switzerland to attend school in Italy. Things go wrong from the start. The other girls make fun of her country ways, then the school is seized by the army. Due to a misunderstanding, Heidi and several classmates are separated from their beloved headmistress (Leslie Caron) and sent to an Oliver Twist-like orphanage. Fortunately, they're able to escape. Using her mountaineering skills, Heidi leads them on an expedition across the Alps to her grandfather's house. Charlie Sheen, who plays her sweetheart Peter, acquits himself nicely as a soldier who assists the girls, but his American accent sounds out of place. Odd casting aside, this family adventure is faithful to the spirit of the original story. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

In the bitter chill of winter, over snow-covered mountains and against all odds, one fearless young girl will risk everything to guide her friends to safety. Fifteen-year-old Heidi (Caton) leaves her beloved grandfather (Jan Rubes), her childhood sweetheart (Sheen) and her cherished Swiss mountains to attend an Italian boarding school run by a kind headmistress (Caron). But when World War I breaks out, Heidi and her classmates are torn from their serene surroundings. Fearing for their lives, they escape on foot through the countryside...and embark on a daring trek across the treacherous, frozen Alps towards the safety of Heidi's girlhood home.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars good adventure yarn.......2007-05-12

While not officially adapted from any of the original "Heidi" stories by Johanna Spyri, COURAGE MOUNTAIN takes the original characters into the dark days of WWI, with an adventure filled with thrills and intrigues.

An adolescent Heidi (played by Juliette Caton) leaves her home in the Alps to attend a private girls' boarding-school in Italy. She soon finds herself at odds with the aristocratic girls, but endears herself to kindly headmistress Miss Hillary (Leslie Caron). When the school is claimed as a barracks for the Italian Army, most of the girls are sent home; but unable to contact Heidi's grandfather, Miss Hillary reluctantly sends Heidi and a small group of the girls into the care of a local orphanage, run by the sadistic Signor Bonelli (Yorgo Voyagis) and his wife (Laura Betti).

Heidi and the girls stage a daring escape, and decide the only way home is across the mountains...with Bonelli in close pursuit. COURAGE MOUNTAIN is filled with enough drama, thrills and adventure to dazzle any audience. Leslie Caron delivers a strong performance as the staunch headmistress; and Juliette Caton is a believably-rustic Heidi.

The cast also includes Charlie Sheen as Peter and Jan Rubes as Grandfather; with Nicola Stapleton, Joanna Clarke, Kathryn Ludlow and Jade Magri. (Single-sided, single-layer disc).

4 out of 5 stars Good Addition to an old fav!.......2007-03-30

Heidi is a childhood fav. and courage mountain is a nice addition, it lets you make assumptions about Heidi and peter having a future together and I thought that was a great note to end on.

5 out of 5 stars A joyous movie of love, courage and truth!.......2005-01-11

This movie of Heidi is a real treat for any one wanting to see a film full of family love and love for others, courage and good ole fashioned morality. From the very beginning to the end you'll be sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. We like the movie so much we are going to buy it for our own home library. Heidi shows such love for every one it stirs ones heart. The right wins over the bad in this film.

5 out of 5 stars Courage Mountain.......2004-02-04

This is a great movie. I can't wait for it to be available on DVD. 10 STARS!!!

    Description

Two female roommates, locked in a duel to the death, is the basis for 2LDK, a vicious black comedy about competition, co-habitation, and catfights! Two struggling actresses are sharing an apartment and auditioning for the same role. Petty squabbles turn into fits of rage that involves power tools and electrocution devices! 2LDK is a twisted gem from Japan.

4 out of 5 stars Two girls enter..........2006-10-12

"2LDK" is a blast, pure and simple. There's no depth here, only a hint of a story, but the characters are developed just enough in the beginning to draw you into the insane action that follows.

The film is part of the "Duel Project," set as a challenge by a film producer to two directors, seeing which one of them could make the best film that featured only two characters, a single setting, and only a week to unfold. The second film in the Duel Project was Ryuhei Kitamura's "Aragami." The two films were shown back-to-back, then audience members were asked to vote by placing their ticket stubs in the box for either film. "2LDK" won by exactly one vote.

The word "2LDK" is Japanese short-hand for an apartment with two rooms (2) and a large dinning/kitchen space (LDK). This particular apartment is much cooler than your average 2LDK, and the director obviously had a lot of fun creating the space for the girls to battle in. In one corner we have Lana, a typical modern Japanese girl with bleached hair who lives most of her life making dates on her cell phone. She doesn't make much money, but has a rich collection of expensive brand-name items from male admirers. In the other corner is Nozomi, who is the typical shy country girl, with long, undyed black hair, a shy timid manner and only one man who she is setting her cap at. Putting these two polar opposites in a single living space is enough to make sparks, but to top it off they are both competing for the same role in an upcoming movie.

The director builds the tension between to two in a really clever way, letting it slowly bubble under the surface while both girls retain the veneer of politeness. When the explosion happens, it booms with a shocking fierceness. You know they are going to fight, because that is what the Duel Project is all about, so from there on it is only a matter of style. And Yukihiko Tsutsumi has some style to spare.

The only problem with this release is the DVD itself. There isn't much to it, and "2LDK" only runs 70 minutes which is pretty slim. If they had packaged this film with "Aragami" as a 2-disk Duel Project boxset, complete with back story and interviews with both directors as well as the producer who set the challenge, then it would have been a powerhouse release.

4 out of 5 stars A very fun and action packed movie.......2006-04-14

2LDK essentially stands for 2 bedroom, living, dining room, and kitchen. There are two women living in this apartment, one girl is rich and has everything she could almost want except she is haunted by a horrible past that she cannot escape in her mind. The other girl is from the country. Both girls are up for the same role in a movie called the `Yakuza Wives' and they both want the same man. Finally they have had enough of each other and there is much blood. From what I read this movie was based on the idea by a producer who challenged him and Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus, Battlefield Baseball, Sky High) and proposed to them to each make a movie with only two characters and have it done within a week and both have to be battle movies. Kitamura's movie is titled 'Aragami'.

The idea for this movie is very simple and the main cast just consists of 2 girls. There are other characters, some heard over the phone while others are seen through flashbacks. This is a very fun and action packed movie. In the beginning the girls have an internal dialogue where they just talk about what they are annoyed by that the other girl does, and they actually say the opposite thing to them. The girls finally get sick of each other and just try to kill each other with whatever weapon they can pick up. Some of the stuff they pick up is hilarious. There are hairdryers, mini chainsaws, plants being thrown, etc. You really can't help but laugh and cringe.

You really just don't see any of this coming, especially with the ending and you realize that both of these girls must be crazy. I really liked the idea of this movie but I will admit that this film does have its dull moments where you are just waiting for something to happen. Then it goes back to where you think, how many times have all of us just wanted to kill the person we pretend to get along with? Not the greatest style of movies but I did appreciate the lack of background music. It made the movie seem more realistic like you were actually watching two girls trying to kill each other.

    3 out of 5 stars fair..........2005-10-10

aragami won the movie duel between it and this one. 2ldk starts off promising but somewhere in the middle it becomes predictable and blah.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fun Guilty PLeasure.......2005-05-29

I happened upon 2LDK completely by accident, and was instantly intrigued. This is an odd psychological film, starting innocently enough. But by the end, the two roommate-actresses are literally insane, trying to kill each other. This is a rather over-the-top film, both in terms of the attempted death methods as well as the very short time frame - the entire film takes place in one evening. By the end, the confrontation is somewhat reminiscent of the opening battle of Kill Bill I. This film is clearly NOT for minors, and is quite enjoyable for its odd zaniness.

This is actually a review of Dug Fresh's review. Violence in films is good. Good, if the said violence serves the story and isn't gratuitous. If you've ever fired a gun, been in a car accident, or hit someone or have been hit, then you should know that real life violence is so far and away from scripted movie violence they CANNOT be compared. Yes, the world is violent but two characters engaging each other in combat within the context of a good story is not. A good fight scene is like a dance number in a musical or a monologue on SNL. Some people like it and others well... it's just not there thing.

    Not a Fanboy just fair.

Made in 1975 and directed by Paul Verhoeven, Katie Tippel ("Katie the Streetwalker") is a handsome period drama set in 19th-century Holland, based on a true story. The second eldest daughter in a poor, Friesland family who move to Amsterdam, Katie (Monique Van de Ven) must find whatever work is going to make ends meet. She has already learnt to have no faith in her weak father. Now, as she enters a succession of jobs in which she experiences both exploitation and sexual harassment, she learns that men want her for only one thing. Duly, at the behest of her own mother, she enters prostitution. However, when she becomes model to an artist she is finally able to escape the poverty trap and ascend the social ladder, particularly when banker Hugo (Rutger Hauer) takes her as his lover. All this is set against a backdrop of social foment as the workers' impatience at poor social conditions increases.

Although director Verhoeven, as well as Hauer and cinematographer Jan De Bont eventually became involved in mainstream American movies, Katie Tippel is very much of the European school of film-making, episodic and harsh in its depiction of everyday poverty. The dead puppy at the beginning definitely marks it as contrary to Hollywood's near-zero canine mortality rate. The sexual scenes are graphic to the point of gratuitousness but always grimly non-titillating. Budgetary limits cramp some of the mass street scenes, but generally the film is beautifully shot and ageless in feel. A far cry, certainly from Showgirls, for which Verhoeven was later responsible. --David Stubbs

4 out of 5 stars Visually stunning Verhoeven film.......2004-08-17

This film is visually stunning with a soundtrack that sounds truly haunted. Occasionally the film lets itself down with it's editing. I sometimes feel disorientated thinking " wait slow down will you." Having said that - this film is well acted, and really puts you in the Netherlands of the 19th Century. It may not be as hard hitting and exciting as Turkish Delight but this film is equally competent and well worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious and Sumptuous Early Verhoeven.......2004-01-05

Awesome! Great performances, cinematography, score and of course direction. Brilliant and realistic period film about a young girl struggling through poverty stricken Europe in the late 1800's in the Netherlands. The ending may seem abrupt to some but it does thankfully end on a happy note.

    3 out of 5 stars Intriguing, but falls short . . . 3 and 1/2 stars.......2003-09-19

This movie was far overrated. I bought it because everybody seemed to be giving away stars. At one point I actually yawned. I just couldn't feel what Katie was feeling at all. Granted, the acting, costumes, setting etc. were great. I just think the film failed to really pull the audience in. Katie's character was too vague, hence we really didn't get into her mind. There was absolutely no climax. Just a series of quick transitions from point A to B with nothing to make you really shake your head, or your fist. For pete's sake, the woman was forever starving, and not to mention raped, yet I couldn't foster up an ounce of pity for her (and this is coming from someone who still hasn't watched "The Lion King", because I heard one of the lions died). I'll tell you this though, you'll get more reaction out of Katie if you mess with her food. Yep, steal her bread and she'll introduce your face to some heavy duty washing solution that could blind you. But rape her, and she'll merely break your window and run away with a satisfied smirk.

And what's up with the ending? Did they run out of $$? I don't know if reading these reviews actually raised my hopes up too high, or maybe it's the fact that I'd just finished watching "Turkish Delight", also with Rutger and Monique, and absolutely loved it. Bottom line: mediocre film, better just to rent it. I certainly won't be watching this again for at least another year or two.

5 out of 5 stars KATIE THE STREETWALKER............2003-06-18

Based on the true story of a woman named Neel Doff, this film is somewhat of a departure from Verhoeven's other films in that it's a period piece but his style and master's touch remain. Monique Van Der Ven plays Katie, an impoverished waif whose indominatable will to survive is this film's backbone. Van Der Ven is remarkable. All wide eyed innocence yet streetwise when necessary. The poverty of 1800's Amsterdam is vividly captured as Katie's knockabout family struggle with hunger---prompting Mama to prostitute first one daughter (who goes from pig to alcoholic pig) then Katie. Katie learns fast what money can do and she leaves her foul family to be the mistress of a social climbing user (Rutger Hauer). But her fate changes again...and again. This is tamer than some of Verhoeven's work. There is a rough but quick rape scene that's handled well and not exploitive and some frank nudity but all in all Verhoeven concentrates on telling Katie's story rather than sex. The ending is rather ambiguous but leaves you satisfied that Katie has indeed finally overcome her overwhelming obstacles. Rich in detail and period flavor, this film is sumptuous to look at and the acting is sublime---esp. Van Der Ven as Katie. Some strong scenes may make some viewers squirm but, as with pre-Hollywood Verhoeven, he's honest as a filmmaker. The DVD from good old Anchor Bay is glorious.

5 out of 5 stars I usually do not like foreign films......................2002-08-11

their just too ,well ahh foreign, but this is really a great film. The copy I bought was dubbed, and it was done quite well. Judging from the credits I can imagine that the subtitled copy must be hard to read. If you have any fantasies about the nobility of being poor do not watch this film. Though the movie is successful on many levels, the one thing you will remember most is that "poverty sucks" no matter where or when you were born.
