Not merely a description of corpulent character Pruitt Taylor Vince, the title refers to the leaden atmosphere hanging over a roadside café and its inhabitants. Writer-director James Mangold finds significance in the details of life, giving this touching story an authenticity that keeps us involved. Liv Tyler brings poignancy to the story as a college dropout who helps awaken the introverted and depressed Vince. Unfortunately, this fascinating character study is too often undermined by direction slow enough to be leaden. Happily, even the most stolid camera work cannot undermine the desires and insecurities of the main character, a man yearning for a full life but too afraid too take a chance. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Exclamations of religious awe are in order. Legendary and long sought-after, this live Led Zeppelin collection is nothing less than the rock music equivalent of the Holy Grail. Quite simply, this is what all the fuss was about.
Given that they were the biggest band in the world, Zeppelin were notoriously camera-shy in their heyday. Their official filmic legacy until now has been just the fascinating but flawed The Song Remains the Same. While this new set presents some previously unseen footage from the same 1973 Madison Square Garden gigs, its real wonders lie in the earlier (1970) Royal Albert Hall footage and the later Earls Court (1975) and Knebworth (1979) concerts. Everything here looks and sounds new-minted, thanks to painstaking restoration and remastering of both audio and visual sources, a Herculean labor of love on the part of co-producer Dick Carruthers working hand-in-glove with Jimmy Page. Trawling through thousands of yards of previously unseen film and unheard tape recordings--some with missing visuals, some with missing audio--Page and Carruthers have chosen only the best possible footage available. They were also at pains to make the segments segue seamlessly so that the viewer is treated to what feels like a continuous concert--just sample the transition from a grainy Super 8 "Immigrant Song" (Sydney, 1972) to "Black Dog" at MSG.
Highlights? It's not hyperbole to say that every powerhouse minute of this collection (some 230 minutes of concert footage plus another hour and a half of extra DVD material) is a rare musical and visual treat. But hearing Page's violin bow work on "Dazed and Confused" in DTS or Dolby 5.1 is an experience not soon forgotten. --Mark Walker

zeppelin lives.......2007-06-23
I am so glad I purchased this. The performances are absolutely amazing! This is all about the music - the best of the best. I only wish I were able to be there when they took place.
Excellent dvd set. A must have!
Why Led Zeppelin's music is CLASSIC.......2007-06-22
I was, am, and always shall BE mesmerized by this DVD complilation. It's a journey through the 70s, and it brought back a lot of great childhood memories as I watched Robert Plant prance on stage and Jimmy Page play like he was on fire. Which he was. But what sets Zeppelin apart from today's musical bands is simple: They didn't write or perform social/political commetary in a time filled with anti-war sentiment and civil injustices. Zeppelin saved that for Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, David Bowie- just to name a few. This was genius on Zeppelin's part and that's why Zeppelin will always be a classic rock band. Their songs are in no way dated the way other bands' songs from the 70s are. Oh sure, their clothes are dated on this DVD- check out Jimmy Page's hand-sewn astrology symbols on his pants- but their music will outlive any of us, all of us- and thank Zeppelin for that.
Simply Stunning.......2007-06-13
I am sure the details have all been listed-so I will say this: Get some nice headphones that accent the bass, and enjoy this fantastic collection.
Thank god, "the suits" that ran these boys, coughed up the money, time and energy to get the band on 16mm film. The collection of clips and interviews add to the treasures. This is the power music, that Hendrix and Cream started, but couldn't maintain. Indeed, LZ couldn't maintain it-so the early video when they were raw and hungry-and not yet drugged to numbness-is a real treat!
Also the film/sound technology was just changing in the 60's to capture the music of 60's and early 70's. What a pity, we don't have more color celluloid and 1/4 audio sync tape of Cream, Jimi, the Beatles, Motown.
With the advent of high speed Kodak 16mm film, pilotone synched Nagra 1/4" tape recorders, Eclair NPR 16mm handheld cameras, along with the competing Arriflexes from Germany, sync cables, good labs, good mics, transfers and mixes all to end up in its own personal joy, on your DVD platter.
This is music that sounds GOOD loud and rich. So rather than terrify your neighbors-get some headphones with a good bass sound, and crank it.
I heard on a radio talk show, that Plant really thought the early Live at the Royal Albert Hall performance-captured the band at a good musical stage. (considering the sloppy drugged-out future and ultimate demise)
I also heard that US Sec. of State Condoleezza Rice, has studied classical music, and in the morning she enjoys listening to Led Zepellin and Cream. I think Condi, would enjoy this DVD. Bluesy Les Paul solos added with jazz improv free form lead guitar especially on the live slow blues tracks; hard driving rock; eclectic Persian and World music motifs-Classical Bach themes, abit of Celtic folk-traditional themes: it is all electrified and in good form with a lyrical, passionate lead singer who is man enough to get out of the way at times and let the players-have some fun on their own. Long overdue-grab it now!
led zep.......2007-05-14
great concert footage and sound covering various stages of the band. a must for zepplin fans.
Newbury Comics is Top 3 Shipper/Service Ever! Dvd is.........2007-05-13
I thought, a very moving look at the band through Page's eyes and heart.
KIller end of concert "filler" tv shows in Europe. Wow! Don't miss the last footage from 79' where Plant and Page are strangers on stage; you can actually feel the tension as they perform (Plant left at end of this tour).
Having played frisbee with Plant and JP on a Malibu beach in 73', I was moved by the sincerity Page reveals (if you look!)

The debut major-label album from Avenged Sevenfold (aka A7X) shattered preconceptions of punk and metal as 2005's City Of Evil sold more than 800,000 copies, shot to Top 30 Pop, and won the band Best New Artist at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards. Now, prior to the release later this year of the band's next explosive album, the DVD All Excess brings fans up-to-date with a visual and aural history of the group. This is only the beginning for A7X.

Step Up happily joins the long line of movies intoxicated by sexy bodies in motion. When an overachieving dancer (Jenna Dewan, Take the Lead) at an East Coast art school loses her partner just before a big showcase, her only possible replacement is a young tough (Channing Tatum, She's the Man) doing community service as a janitor. From there, Step Up slams together a folio of cliches, from prissy-rich-girl-gets-loosened-up-by-poor-boy to hoodlum-learns-the-error-of-his-ways-through-personal-tragedy to artist-discovers-his-voice. It's set in one of those performing arts schools where the students burst into spontaneous synchronized dance at parties. But Step Up, directed by choreographer Anne Fletcher, has a relaxed kinetic momentum and enough texture to give the nonsense just a hint of realistic grit. More than anything, Step Up shows off hunky Channing Tatum. With his sleepy eyes, broad jaw, and sloping neck, Tatum looks like an Easter Island statue come to life. His acting range may be limited, but Tatum has a definite lazy charisma; even when dancing full tilt, he looks like he just woke up and is still dreaming of the night before. Step Up also features Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under) as the requisite tough-but-loving-authority-figure. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Incredible dancing and awesome music fuel STEP UP, the exhilarating and inspiring movie starring Channing Tatum (SHE'S THE MAN, COACH CARTER) who sizzles as Tyler Gage, a rough and streetwise hunk with raw talent. When Tyler finds himself doing community service at a school for the performing arts, he also finds Nora, a beautiful and privileged classically trained dancer who's searching for a temporary replacement for her injured dance partner. Spying Tyler's smooth moves, Nora decides to take a chance on him. But as they begin training, tension builds, tempers flare and the differences in their backgrounds explode igniting this electrifying tale about not giving up on your dreams.

great movie!!.......2007-06-11
my daughter and i love this movie. she has watched it over and over even with the commentary! she is 14 and i am almost 40 and we both agree that it was very good. we like music and dance. and channing tatum is a good actor and good looking too!
lbuggie's review.......2007-05-29
I saw this movie just this past week-end and I must say, I really liked it! My favorite part was when Tyler and Nora first danced together in the spot their friend Lucy sang at with her boyfriend, the jerk. Same ol' plot, but different in it's own unique way.
Step Up.......2007-05-28
I am an admitted dance-film addict. Moreover, I am fixated with Channing Tatum, mostly because he is exceedingly hot (that is a scientific term). Obviously I enjoyed the movie, although I prefer the preppy Channing of "She's the Man". Still, the film was fun and entertaining and while no one is going to win any academy awards it is an enjoyable feel-good movie all the same. If you like dancing movies, you will enjoy this one.
Fun and hip.......2007-04-14
Channing Tatum as Tyler Gage gives a great performance in this fun movie. The basic idea is a bit contrived, but it works: a no-gooder teenager with a knack for rap is reluctantly coopted by a beautiful dancer in need of a partner. He will of course help her jazz up her act, she will make him a better man, and they will fall in love. Aside from annoying zigzags in Tyler's commitment (one slip is OK, but three?!), the script pulls us in. It is helped by a lot of dancing, not always great but always energetic. Rachel Griffiths is excellent in the minor role of the principal of the art school.
Step Up.......2007-04-13
I enjoyed this movie. I finally got to see Channing Tatum show his true talent. Jenna is also awsome in this. Every film that I've seen her in she never fails to deliver a good performance. This movie touches on a group of kids from different sides of the track, but are brought together by common bonds, music and dance. I also enjoy the bonus features of this movie, videos and submission tapes.

It's about time.......2007-06-18
Yes, that time has finally arrived, after over 2 decades, the original Twisted Sister Saturday Night concert originally broadcast on Mtv is finally gonna be released on dvd.
As a young teen being about 13-14 years old, I remember watching this concert on Mtv and I have never forgotten about it. I've seen it on ebay but did not want to vhs version, so I will be really glad when I get my paws on this dvd version that has been burned into my brain for the past 20+ years.
Some of you may think it sad, but it was TS that brought me into the world of music, what was called heavy metal at the time, then thrash, punk, country, americana and just all kinds of music in general, but to me Twisted Sister will always be one of the best and most exciting and influential bands in my life.
Gabriel

Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy play it surprisingly straight in this film by director Ted Demme. Though there are laughs to be had, this is a story about perseverance in the face of a life of disappointment (yet the film was sold as a prison comedy). But Stir Crazy this isn't. Rather, Lawrence and Murphy play a couple of New Yorkers making a moonshine run from New York to Mississippi during the Prohibition who find themselves framed for murder and sentenced for life to a prison chain gang. As they age, the two become close friends, although the strait-laced Lawrence always resents the free-wheeling Murphy for getting him into the situation in the first place. Ultimately, these two men learn to find meaning where they can, taking value from friendship and their limited ability to affect the lives of others. At times preachy, it ends on an upbeat note; the film's biggest laughs are reserved for the final section, in which Lawrence and Murphy don age makeup and play octogenarians. --Marshall Fine

This was meant to be a birthday present and when he opened it, it looked somewhat bootlegg. A good one but bootlegg nonetheless. So I am not a satisfied customer this time.
A must have DVD!!.......2007-04-08
This is a must have DVD in your movie collection. Those who don't like this movie don't get the "black" or "urban" experience at all!! Trust me if you do you will agree this is one of the greatest comedies EVER!!! Why? because it is real..it hits home on some very disturbing points about race and injustice.. with...and without humor!! Isn't that the story of black America. Over coming through non violent means. Which include laughter, sports, music clubs, dreams and life long bonds!! This film touches on all that. Buy it... and get one of the black communities(and whites who understand urban culture) greatest films of all time...period!!

[3.5]--These two almost pulled it off........2007-02-02
Once upon a time in America, life in prison meant precisely that. There was no early parole, no time off for good behavior. If you were sentenced to life, you could pretty much count on dying a prisoner in some godforsaken camp, farm or prison. Eddie Murphy is a small-time crook in Prohibition-era New York trying to get out of debt to a Harlem mobster. He sets up a scheme of driving some Mississippi moonshine to the mobster's speakeasy in New York. He ropes in as his driver Martin Lawrence, a bank teller who has also fallen afoul of the mobster because of an unpaid gambling debt.
Murphy's character's weak nature gets the better of him and after receiving the liquor shipment, he decides to do some gambling in a rural club. He gets cheated by a local card sharp who later mouths off to the town sheriff, who murders him. Murphy and Lawrence have the misfortune of discovering the body, and being seen with it. They get, you guessed it, life in prison. The two, initially antagonistic to one another, are forced to rely upon each other in the brutal work camp to which they are sentenced. Time passes and they dream of the freedom it seems will be denied them for a crime of which they aren't guilty.
There are a lot of moving moments in "Life" and with Murphy and Lawrence, even more funny ones. There is social commentary in the form of how black men are treated in the South, but it isn't strongly told or terribly compelling. Other movies explore that subject in greater depth and with greater insight. The problem with "Life" is that the filmmakers aren't sure whether they wanted to make a comedy, an examination of prison life in the Deep South of, say, 50 years ago, or a political/social commentary on the shaft given African Americans. They decide to do all these things, and in fact their reach exceeds their grasp.
"Life" really doesn't give you any new insights into anything. It's mainly an excuse to pair two of the brightest comic minds in America. Watching the two at work individually is fascinating, but Lawrence and Murphy don't generate enough chemistry to hold any interest as a team.
Great Job.......2007-02-01
They did a wonderful job getting my product here on time, matter-of-fact it was early and the it was brand new. Thank you for the great work.

As long as there is a need for adolescent male sexual fantasy, there will be an audience for Heavy Metal. Released in 1981 and based on stories from the graphic magazine of the same name (possibly the greatest publication to simultaneously provoke imagination and masturbation), the film has since become the most popular single title in Columbia/TriStar's entire film library. That's an amazing fact considering just how silly and senseless the movie really is--an aimless, juvenile amalgam of disjointed stories and clashing visual styles, employing hundreds of animators from around the world with a near-total absence of creative cohesion. It remains, for better and worse, a midnight-movie favorite for the stoner crowd--a movie best enjoyed by randy adolescents or near-adults in an altered state of consciousness.
With a framing story about a glowing green orb claiming to be the embodiment of all evil, the film shuttles through eight episodic tales of sci-fi adventure, each fueled by some of the most wretched rock music to emerge from the 1980s. The most consistent trademark is an abundance of blood-splattering violence and wet-dream sex, the latter involving a succession of huge-breasted babes who shed their clothes at the drop of a G-string. It's all quite fun in its rampantly brainless desire to fuel the young male libido, and for all its incoherence Heavy Metal remains impressive for the ambitious artistry of its individual segments. Courtesy of producer Ivan Reitman (who'd just scored a hit with Stripes), voice talents include several Canadian veterans of Second City comedy, including John Candy, Harold Ramis, Eugene Levy, and Joe Flaherty. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Good Ole Movie.......2007-05-26
Like many teenaged boys, my friends and I watched this one over and over when it came out back in 19-somethin' somethin'. It is worth watching for SciFi buffs, even if you're not a teen male, for the eclectic stories interwoven under a single theme. A good gamer movie. I have heard it was the first animated movie that was rated R, but I'm not sure if that's true. Not for children (nudity, violence, drugs, adult themes) but nowhere near as bad as some of the movies that are out nowadays. Listen for many celebrity voices and awesome soundtrack.
Favorite guilty pleasure. I love this movie........2007-03-09
This movie is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. I have to watch it at twice a year or more.
Heavy Metal (Collector's Edition).......2007-01-31
I had forgotten all about this movie! I was shopping for a copy of "Wizards" and found this. I saw it in the theater when it first was introduced. The DVD took me back - the sound and quality were beyond words! Several animated mini stories tied together with the mysterious evil green orb. The movie can best be summed with the unspoked phrase, "Don't call me 'Bitch'."
Definitely represents its roots well.......2007-01-23
Back in the early 70's Marvel Comics made an offshoot anthology comic book geared toward adults. This book was called Heavy Metal and it's still going strong today. Most of the stories are science fiction and delve into some pretty strange ideas. The movie was made to in a way showcase the talent that came from the most popular artists and writers of that magazine. There was some up and coming Canadian talent doing the voice work like John Candy and Eugene Levy. While the idea sounds cool enough I think the execution leaves a little bit to be desired. This movie feels like it was a rush job considering some inconsistent production values and even some of the story content. Since it is an anthology of multiple stories I will go down the line so you can get an idea where the quality lies and where it falls short.
Soft Landing - This is the opening sequence that comes with the opening credits and it's the only story that connects itself to another story in the movie. The animation is a rough rotoscope technique that has only a wash of paint over real footage. I like how they did it. Very artistic. I have to admit it is a perfect representation of the magazine with its off the wall content and nice design. The hard rock soundtrack feel appropriate in this segment too. It's short, but it sure does make quite a good impression.
Grimaldi - This is the story Soft Landing connects itself to and it sets the stage for the theme that supposedly connects the other stories together. It's a weak way to put the anthology together at best. Still it does give the movie something to put the wildly different stories together. The animation is not bad and it can get a little gruesome at times. Again this is a short story since all it does it introduce the Loc Nar. You will see this segment between girl and Loc Nar throughout the movie to help keep the plotline going in the right direction in your mind... if you want to call it a plot.
Harry Canyan - This is the story of a New York taxi driver in the year 2031. The script has a classic film noir sense to it that adds some charm to this piece. I hear this story inspired parts of The Fifth Element so that's kind of cool. This story is classic Heavy Metal. The look of the cityscape and stuff reminds me of the graphic novel Hard Boiled as well as work from the artist Moebius. The animation looks like it's at an atrocious 12 frames per second (or less), which kills the coolness of the artwork sometimes. This one probably has the worst soundtrack of all the stories. The rock music just doesn't fit at all. This one is not really bad, but there is plenty to keep it from being really good.
Den - This is another classic Heavy Metal type story and it is a funny one. It's a Richard Corben styled story and I guess you can call it every geek boy's fantasy since the star (John Candy) is an 18 yr old nerd who turns into a muscular barbarian hero that always gets the girl. They play that theme up to the hilt with some funny narration by Candy, who is great in this one. This adventure/comedy has a little more story depth than the previous stories but the animation is still choppy. The soundtrack it a good classic fantasy styled piece that works well with this one. Even though the animation (again not the art, which is nice) leaves a lot to be desired the enjoyable story and funny dialog make up for it and make this story one of the better ones.
Captain Sternn - This come straight from a character created by Bernie Wrightson that was quite popular in the Heavy Metal magazine. Sternn is an anti-hero in the magazine and in the movie he is now being brought up on charges for his evil deeds (fans of the mag back then must have loved the irony of this). The animation has a more cartoonish feel to it and does't try to make the characters all that realistic like the other short films in this movie. However the animation is LOT cleaner here and I wished the rest of the stories were this polished. The story itself is entertaining as well, but ultimately it's all just one big build up for a wacky yet funny punch line at the end. Amusing enough, but it won't carry the movie.
B-17 - This is the scariest of the bunch. A classic horror film created by renowned horror comic artist Mike Ploog. The story lends itself to being scary folklore to frighten WWII pilots or something like that and it pulls it off very well. Artistically it's eerie and has a classic 40's feel to the drawings and the animation seems to be a lot better. Some of the artwork does get limited by the fact it's an animated story, but that only lends more to the style. This is one of the definite shining gems of the movie.
So Beautiful and So Dangerous - This can be called Cheech and Chong in space. It's a mix of sophomoric drug humor, interpersonal relationships with robots, and universal perspective. The stoner aliens didn't do it for me at all. Then again that is a certain kind of humor not everybody gets into. The interaction between the Pentagon secretary and robot is pretty funny for adult humor. Again John Candy brings a lot of fun in his role as the robot. What I found interesting was the size comparisons they played with in this short. You have a ship many times larger than the Pentagon controlled by a robot and two half-baked aliens, which docks with an even more massive space station. The animation is on par with the better stuff in this movie, but the soundtrack is yet another hard rock throwaway that doesn't do anything to enhance the story. Ultimately this one is merely okay in my book. Nothing special.
Tarrna - This story is the best of the best in this anthology. Nothing compares to it in cinematic execution, which is probably why they saved it for last. The animation is still a relatively low frame rate (by Disney's standards) but there is a lot of rotoscoping done that makes those frames very effective and very beautiful. The soundtrack fits the short film better than any music did on the previous stories. The story is the best of the bunch too. The settings are cool with the futuristic wasteland. The designs are definitely a Moebius influence with some breathtaking landscapes and wild technology scattered about. Of course this story also resolves the plot devised that started the whole movie to begin with so everything is tied up nice and neat. If the other short films (aside from B-17) put this much attention in the execution of their perspective works then you would have a much better movie all around.
Heavy Metal did accomplish what it set out to do in that it showcased the magazine in a time when it was at its highest in popularity. For the non-Heavy Metal Magazine fan it's not as good. Keep in mind the content has lots of blatant animated nudity, sexual situations and graphic violence, Definitely not for the kids. The stories are interesting enough, but that might not be enough for some who expect quality production values all the way through. If you're a fan of the comic book then you probably already seen it and love it. If you are the type of person who jams to classic rock and have that biker rebel streak in you then you might find Heavy Metal refreshing. The rest of you will have to just make a judgment call. It has equal parts good and bad qualities so take that for whatever you see it.
Heavy Metal - Totally Cool Flick!.......2007-01-21
I viewed this movie back when it first came out; it was a double feature opening for Pink Floyd's The Wall. I was so psyched when I saw these films. Heavy Metal was the first "hi-tech" cartoon movie that had (still has) an awesome soundtrack. I have seen it twice since Xmas 2006 and love this movie. Great party flick for all ages, great date flick, great for just mellowing out to some great entertainment. Some great tunes within, buy it just for that!
Much better flick if you have a good to great sound system to hear it on and you've got to turn off the lights to get its full effects.
Buy it and add to your collection - you won't be disappointed.

Amazon.com essential video
In adapting his own novel The Cider House Rules for the screen, John Irving sacrificed at least some of the depth and detail that made his humanitarian themes resonate, while the film--directed with Scandinavian sobriety by Lasse Hallström--is often vague about the complex issues (abortion, incest, responsibility) that lie at its core. Allowing for this ambiguity (which is arguably intentional), the film retains much of what made Irving's novel so admired, and like Hallström's earlier feature What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, it's blessed with a generous, forgiving spirit toward the mistakes, foibles, and desires of its many engaging characters.
Central to the story (set during World War II) is Homer (Tobey Maguire), a young man raised in a Maine orphanage, where the ether-sniffing Dr. Larch (Michael Caine) rules with benevolent grace while performing safe but illegal abortions. To expand his horizons, Homer follows a young couple (Charlize Theron, Paul Rudd) to do fieldwork on an apple farm, where his innocent eyes are opened to the good and evil of the world--and to the realization that not all rules are steadfast in all situations. By the time Homer returns to the orphanage, The Cider House Rules--which features one of Caine's finest performances--is memorable more for its many charming and insightful moments than for any lasting dramatic impact. Is Homer fated to come full circle in his kindhearted journey? It's left to the viewer to decide. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Honored with two Academy Awards(R) -- Best Supporting Actor, Michael Caine, and Best Adapted Screenplay, John Irving -- THE CIDER HOUSE RULES tells a compelling and heartwarming story about how far a young man must travel to find the place where he truly belongs! Homer Wells (Tobey Macguire -- PLEASANTVILLE, THE ICE STORM, WONDER BOYS) has lived nearly his entire life within the walls of St. Cloud's Orphanage in rural Maine. Though groomed by its proprietor, Dr. Larch (Caine), to be his successor, Homer nonetheless feels the need to strike out on his own and experience the world outside. Then, while working at an apple orchard, Homer falls for the beautiful Candy (Charlize Theron -- REINDEER GAMES, THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE) and learns some powerfully indelible lessons about life, love, and home! Based on John Irving's best-selling American classic and featuring a sensational all-star cast including Delroy Lindo and newcomer Erykah Badu, this entertaining motion picture earned raves from critics and moviegoers everywhere!
Customer Reviews:
The craft of story and character.......2007-05-23
After multiple viewings, I still adore the richness and humanity of this modest little story. The subject matter, the setting, the era, the details, the characters, they're all exquisitely rendered. Toby Maguire offers a supremely generous lead. He is a canvas, basically, upon which the other actors draw their characters. Michael Caine is particularly stunning, but the whole cast is in capital form. Kids have never looked better or more believable on film, ever. Lasse Hallestrom gets my vote as the reigning saint of intelligent film-making. Everything he does is ambitious and edifying and humanscale, and altogether marvelously uncommercial. He is everything that Hollywood should aspire to be, but does not.

This is a great movie. It was in perfect condition. Never used when we got it and it was a reasonable price. :)
"Princes of Maine - Kings of New England".......2007-04-11
If you read John Irving's books, you'll encounter quotes like these from time to time - all humorous, serious and significant to the story. Irving 's orphan heroes are made to feel that despite being 'unwanted' by society, they were given the most regal title by Dr. Larch so they know they are loved and important. Dr. Larch knows about people and their flaws, and life and it's inevitable tragedies and miracles. You have the same chance of being brought up in riches as you do being raised in an orphanage. Circumstances create all kinds of situations where your life (or death) could change with one mistake or 'choice'.
Irving himself grew up a princely comfortable life in New England, and many of his stories take place in his home state (New Hampshire) and surrounding Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts. He often depicts likeable, quirky characters brought up in 'provincial' New England. That being said, I can attest that Irving is no snob. He's a brilliant writer and his books are among my favs! A Prayer For Owen Meany is a treasure! ~ Enjoy this book and 'spot on' screenplay/film! Jayne Tyau
Cider House Rules.......2007-04-10
I saw this movie several years ago and didn't appreciate the deeper meanings the director was trying to bring out. It was recently recommended to me by an attorney when we were discussing how people go forward after a judgement is made.
This is film that will make you think. I recommend giving it your full attention to appreciate it's subtleties.
The search for honest, genuine, responsibility has failed.......2007-04-10
The orphanage is neat, and is portrayed in a nice, familyish way. The care that is shown there is touching. Beyond that, I search for someone that stands out as true, genuine, and responsible, and I don't find one. The meaninglessness of life without God is starkly portrayed.

The frantic pacing of Big Trouble is surely intentional, but the movie leaves you wanting more of... something. Not more characters--it's got plenty of those--but more room for them to breathe in a top-heavy plot that recalls Get Shorty (also directed by Barry Sonnenfeld) without reaching those heights of ingenuity. Based on the bestseller by syndicated Miami Herald columnist Dave Barry, this Miami-based mayhem bears the distinct imprint of Barry's humor, in which absurdities pile up like rush-hour traffic, involving a former journalist (Tim Allen) connected by circumstance to a wealthy schemer (Stanley Tucci), his bored wife (Rene Russo), Russian mobsters, mismatched cops (Janeane Garofalo, Patrick Warburton), power-crazed FBI agents (Heavy D, Omar Epps), a Frito-loving drifter (Jason Lee), cretinous criminals (Tom Sizemore, Johnny Knoxville), and a gigantic toad that shoots hallucinogenic saliva. Culminating in an airport bomb smuggling (prompting the film's delayed release after the tragedy of September 11, 2001), Big Trouble needs the brilliant cohesion of Dr. Strangelove; what it gets is Sonnenfeld's knack for sustained chaos, and a few decent belly laughs. --Jeff Shannon
Description
The laughs come fast and furious as Tim Allen (JOE SOMEBODY, GALAXY QUEST) and Rene Russo (SHOWTIME, THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR) star in a film from Barry Sonnenfeld, director of GET SHORTY and MEN IN BLACK. Based on humorist Dave Barry's best-selling first novel, BIG TROUBLE follows the comedic chaos created when a mysterious suitcase that threatens the security of Miami changes the lives of a divorced dad, an unhappy housewife, 2 hit men, a pair of street thugs, 2 love-struck teens, 2 FBI men, and a psychedelic toad. There is something for everyone no matter who is looking for BIG TROUBLE -- and in the end, all-star comedy conquers all.

Not as good as the book, but still very funny.......2007-03-19
This is a funny movie! If you haven't read the book, see the movie, then read the book. But do both!
funny, funny.......2007-02-12
This movie has it all. Dave Barry, Tim Allen, Florida, crooks, bozos, cops, bozos, goats, a bomb and Martha Stewart (NOT like you would expect - trust me).
Silly + Idiotic = Classic Dave Berry Video.......2007-01-16
The book "Big Trouble" was Dave Barry's first novel and was his first effort into 'full length' literature. Of course, Dave Barry had already been writing for several years before he penned "Big Trouble" but most of his works up to that time had been ten-minute stories for the Miami Herald. Even his many books were little more than compilations of his weekly newspaper pieces. But "Big Trouble" was different. It had a story to tell. It was a funny story (how could Dave Barry do anything else?) and I enjoyed it tremendously!
But now, "Big Trouble" has been made into a movie and like all other movies-from-books, I expected "Big Trouble", the movie, to have very little in common with "Big Trouble", the book. But I was pleasently surprised because the movie followed the book very closely! Everything that I thought was funny in the book was repeated, mostly word-for-word, in the movie. The producer and director aparrently didn't feel that they could improve on Dave Barry's writing style and the video audience is so much the better for it. (Now if we could only convince other movie producers to follow the original books more faithfully...)
Anyway, my wife and I (both big Dave Barry fans) watched the movie on a quiet evening during the Christmas holidays and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We didn't expect the movie to be a statement on any current politics (the Iraq War, The Bush Administration, Britney Spears nekkid internet pictures, etc) nor did we expect the movie to solve any of mankind's problems (world hungar, disease, Britney Spears, etc.) What we got was what we expected - silly, corny humor and a good reason to sit on the couch and wolf down a bucket of popcorn. If it's something important and meaningful that you crave, forget this video. Watch a Britney Spears video instead.
More like Big Fun!.......2007-01-12
This is a great movie! Everybody and their mother is in it and it is just full of funny stuff! Even if you don't like Tim Allen, you will like this movie!
Big Trouble - funniest movie in years!.......2007-01-04
Big Trouble based on the novel by Dave Barry that i read first and probably the book is a little , just a little bit funnier. The actors are amazing (Dennis Farina and the seat belt, gators fan!), all duets are so funny that everybody will find their favorites!
