A comedy with serious intentions, Man of the Year attempts to challenge the audience's notions of what is and isn't real when it comes to politics. Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams) is a popular political talk show host. As a lark, he runs for president and wins. The thing is, he's not any more unqualified than the other candidates, so his victory doesn't seem quite so outrageous. But when it turns out that the computer ballot firm responsible for tallying all the votes may have had a glitch--and that a recount would negate his win--mayhem ensues and the film segues from comedy, to drama, and back to comedy (sort of) again. Directed by Barry Levinson (Diner, Wag the Dog), the film doesn't take advantage of Williams' natural humor or charm. He at times appears to be chomping at the bit to unleash a comedic tirade or two, only to be held back by stiff lines. Williams only truly appears to be enjoying himself when trading lines with Laura Linney, who portrays the hapless do-gooder at the ballot firm who's being set up to appear unreliable. With some fine performances by a supporting cast that includes Jeff Goldblum, Lewis Black, and the inimitable Christopher Walken, Man of the Year occasionally hints at greatness. But at best, it's a lukewarm comedy with a diluted message. --Jae-Ha Kim

Identity Crisis.......2007-06-21

Political comedian, Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams), runs for President as an Independent, and you guessed it...he wins. A company called Delacroy, has created a new computer-based voting system that is used in the new election. During the election a Delacroy employee, Eleanor Green (Laura Linney), discovers the voting system is flawed and that Tom Dobbs was elected because of a computer glitch. Before word gets out, Delacroy fires Green and ruins her credibility. She must decide what to do with the information she has on the faulty voting system, even though she believes Tom Dobbs is the best choice for the country.

This biggest problem with this movie is its identity crisis. Is this a comedy or a political drama/thriller? Robin Williams does what this role demands. His character is over the top, funny, and even likeable. Laura Linney is likewise great in her role as a disgruntled ex-employee with a secret that will rock the country. However, the two storylines of these characters feel like two different movies altogether, and when they merge it really doesn't work. The rest of the cast is average at best, with extremely mediocre appearances by Jeff Goldblum and Christopher Walken. Should these two actors ever be cast in the same movie? Too much eccentricity for me.

I am so disappointed because this movie could have been great. Two great concepts: political comedian becomes President and new voting system gone bad. Too bad they belong in separate movies.

Man of the year, Robin williams latest movie, is a complete rehashing of 'Wag the dog' (which was made by the same people).. like wag the dog the film is very relevant, very important, and kind of disturbing.. Unlike wag the dog: the dialogue often falls flat, it is slightly predictable, the acting while good does not reach the humor and irony of dustin hoffman's performance... I hate to compare two movies like this (it is very often unfair to do so) but I know that the producers of this film are capable of originality (wag the dog was very original afterall).. Robin williams presence alone is usually enough to make a movie enjoyable - but even he (see rv for more proof of this) is only a human being.. Strangely williams recent dramatic appearances have been nearly twice as good as his comedic ones... Though williams is not responsible if a movie he acts in is not perfect - his talents can and should be used more effectively..
Now for the good stuff about this movie - it is completely relevant - one thing modern politics has shown us over the past years is that it deserves to be mocked.. our well greased political structure works well at dealing with business and watching out for the wealthy but it is a system which (very often)neglects the individual and, indeed, the power of a vote (we know this from the gore-bush race - yes gore did actually get elected).. Until justice is served we need to shake things up - and that is one thing 'man of the year does do'.. so do not just take this as a tongue in cheek statement - this is reality folks..

Robin Williams is a bit mis-cast as a Jon Stewart/Bill Maher/Dennis Miller-clone, but does have a few shining moments in this mostly benign comedy from the pen & camera of Barry Levinson.

Williams plays Tom Dobbs, an irreverent host of a political satire talk show who, for some unknown reason, decides to run for President. He certainly asks the tough questions of his opponents during the liveliest scene of the movie-- the Presidential Debate-- but never really answers his own rhetoric. Williams' Dobbs scores the zinger, but never provides the direction to the answer.

I think the big problem with this movie, is that it is not sure what it wants to be-- political comedy/satire, romantic comedy, thriller or even morality tale. The combo of Levinson & Williams back together again for the first time since 1987s hit Good Morning, Vietnam were not able to re-capture that magic.

It is very much a "been there, heard that already" kind of political satire, and the thriller story-line just does not hold much congressional weight.

The great cast includes: Christopher Walken, Lewis Black, Jeff Goldblum & a superbly manic/neurotic Laura Linney if all a bit wasted here.

Working with the same premise and the same cast this could be remade with better writing into a great movie.
Sadly, I can't recall even one humorous line in this movie about a COMEDIAN running for president.
Some of the performaces are good, specifically Laura Linney's, but that's not enough to save this movie from being horribly mediocre.

If you want to cozy up to one of the best movies ever, you need to do yourself a favor and boil up a cup of tea, slip on those slippers, and pop this DVD into your entertainment system. "Straight Talk" in all of its Dolly-filled glory, is truly one of the most magical film journeys you're ever gonna take.

Dolly Parton stars as a character who isn't down with B.S. and gives nothing but Straight Talk to anyone that will listen. That includes Griffin Dunne and the far-underused Charles Fleischer. Conflicts ensue and barbs begin flying as this no-nonsense gal speaks her mind in a barrage of comic premises.

But then things take a dark turn. Despair sets in when Dolly realizes that not everyone wants to hear her Straight Talk, and she begin to question her coping mechanisms, her quality of life, and the society she is fighting so hard to change. There is a bloody battle sequence that may be too grisly for some audience members, but for me it underscored the classic Man Vs. Mankind struggle that has plagued our race (the human race that is, and also white people) for centuries--nay, millennia.

I'm still not sure why Dolly doesn't sing "9 to 5" in this movie, because it's a great, great song, but even great directors miss the mark on some obvious choices.

In summation, Straight Talk is not for children, as it encourages deviant behavior, challenging authority, and it features adult film star Dolly Parton in what can only be described as a romp-filled romp of a role that takes her to new levels and is highly reminiscent of Nicolas Cage's brave turn in either "Leaving Las Vegas," or his even braver turn in "Con Air."

i like dolly as an actress. this is very good movie. it shows that a woman does not have to depend on a man. this movie is great entertainment. if you are a dolly parton fan or James wood fan, i think you will like this movie.

Fun, inspirational, and humorous!.......2006-01-21

I give "Straight Talk" 5-stars because the music is excellent as is the film, of course (I only wish they'd re-release the song on CD), but anyhow, this film is about a woman, who recently fired from her job as a dance instructor in a small town in Arkansas decides to pick up and leave for greener pastures, so she does, (played by Dolly Parton)!

After leaving her small town in Arkansas, then she arrives in her old car and small savings and decides to get a job. She stays in a nasty run-down hotel, but that doesn't discourage Dolly Parton's character, she "just keeps on truckin'" and knowing that she can do anything she puts her mind to, goes out for a job. Eventually, she lands the ideal job as a radio talk show psychologist! Her new boss knows that she's not a "PhD," but goes ahead and touts her as a "doctor of the heart" and contrary to Dolly's convictions decides to go ahead with the lie because she enjoys helping people so much that she allows the deception to take a life of its own. So, she goes from the run-down hotel room to penthouse deluze aparment, and a pink SL-series Mercedes convertible, not a bad catch, until her conscience finally overrides her to re-think her decision about being a "doctor of the heart."

Before I spoil it for you by giving away the plot, I'll let you hear the wonderful music and buy or rent the film.

I can assure you that you will be glad that you did--just remember, you might need some kleenex!

Straight Talk about the movie..........2005-06-20

This movie is absolutely fabulous - the DVD does not come in Widescreen and there are no extras, but if you can get past that then you will love the plot of this movie about a very independent woman who loves being able to give advice. Dolly plays a very open, honest, wise-cracking, independent radio advisor who ends up having to decide what to do when given the chance to come clean about a misunderstanding that got her the job in the first place or enjoy her celebrity and own up to some other mistakes she has made along the way.

Still packs a punch. Even today........2007-06-12

Talk Radio is loosely based upon the true story of Alan Berg, a radio talk show host who was murdered. The movie chronicles the last few days of shock jock Barry Champlain, an abrasive and self loathing DJ - who spends his nights in a verbal battle of wits with the various callers in on his late night talk show in Dallas. The movie begins as Barry is told his radio show is going to be picked up by a major network and what follows is a night of self discovery, hatred and a possible descent into his own personal madness and finally . . . tragedy.

I remember watching this movie in the early 90s when I first started college. Being an impressionable young teenager combined with the movie gaining notoriety on the video market as being both controversial and dangerous, it quickly circulated amongst my `must see' movies at that time. When finally seeing it, I remember loving Oliver Stones' clever and restrained direction, the cutting screenplay, the excellent ensemble cast and the razor sharp lead performance by star Eric Bogosian. The movie really worked on many levels, and wasn't your usual cookie cutter hollywood flick - this was movie-making that baited the media in much the same way Fight Club and American History X would do years later. For me at that time, this felt like a real movie and what cinema should be doing...

Coming back to it 15+ years later, and now an older guy I approached it with trepidation. Would it still retain its power? Would it remain relevant? Would I see it with the jaded eyes that I pretty much see every movie today? Thankfully for me at least, the answer is yes. Seeing it again after all these years and giving it a long break between viewings, I came back to it with a new pair of eyes or so, I thought - as soon as that opening credit sequence had kicked in, I was firmly back in the court of Barry Champlain. His wicked and vitriolic conversations with an assortment of societies non desireables is both hysterical and deeply disturbing.

Bogosian is a marvel in this movie. You see every emotion on his face and every word means something in a scathing screenplay that is both heartfelt and cutting at every turn. One wonders why his subsequent career hasn't been as rewarding as this - I remember seeing him pop up again in "Under Siege 2" as the villain, and thought huh? Why is someone of this calibre wasting his time playing second fiddle to Steven Seagal? Oh well, everybody's gotta eat, I guess... Although, Bogosian's performance is largely a one-man show, he is ably supported by a wonderful ensemble cast of character actors and movie stars in waiting: Alec Baldwin begins his liking for small supporting character roles that scene steal at every turn - and here again, he is on fine form. Ellen Greene and Leslie Hope are excellent too as the forgiving ex-wife and current girlfriend respectively. John C. McGinley is great too, as Stu - Champlain's collegue - they both spark off each other and add another "edgier" dimension to the movie.

Stone the director is relatively restrained here. No gimmicky jump cuts or using cinema as a flashy editing tool - he just lets Champlain do his thing. That's not to say that the movie is any less directed - to be honest, this is my favourite of Stone's movies - its so well made, that the obvious technical camera work and direction are so good - you forget that this is an actual movie. It seems pretty real, like you are there in the radio station with them. It is so intimate in its presentation.

Granted, minor niggles show themselves in the stereotypical callers (I think I heard Michael Wincott provide about 4 of the voices again and again) but, this only comes about as I have seen it a few times and familiarity of the movie forces you to notice things more and more. To be honest, that is my only nitpick - the film is that good for me. I urge anyone to see it - its a shame it has been dumped onto DVD with no thought to providing a commentary or retrospective look at the film - that would have been special. I really don't like writing a review on Amazon and using the term "masterpiece" because I haven't really seen many in my lifetime - but, this movie is sharp, funny, sad and unrelenting in its aims to entertain and provoke thought from its audience - and for that, I have to say that it is. Talk Radio is that rare movie. A masterpiece. Recommended.

This film is one that doesn't seem like it would entertain you for a couple of hours but does a wonderful job in doing so. Gritty and dark this is a film I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to add to the collection.

Would have to be in my top 10 movies of the 80's.

Really Poor Quality.......2007-04-30

I do not get it. How can anyone actually praise this movie? This was probably THE worst movie I have ever seen, granted I have not seen very many movies compared to most other people, but this was baaaaaaaaaaaaad. There is zero plot. There is no flow to the story, if you can even call it a story. The protagonist dies at the end (as this is based on the death of a real radio host) and you feel no emotion because the movie does not make you sympathize with the host, all I felt was anger at how bad the movie was and how bad the ending was. The screen writing is so poorly written the dialogue is actually annoying. I mean WHAT A STINKER!! The worst part of the movie is the fact that it focuses on the radio hosts' conversations with the callers. Except EVERY (and I mean every single conversation) call sounds completely fake and is terribly unbelievable and overdramatic, real radio is NOTHING like this movie. It is almost as if stone did not even attempt to try to make the calls realistic. I will admit the camera work is okay and the acting of the main character is pretty good but the roll he acts stinks! I can not believe a movie this poorly written was ever made. What a piece of junk. I hope this movie is jettisoned off into outerspace so that it might careen past the event horizon of a black hole never to be retrieved by humanity again. DO NOT BUY, RENT, OR WATCH THIS MOVIE IF YOU CARE AT ALL ABOUT YOU MENTAL HEALTH.

Be Careful What You Say, You Never Know Who's Listening.......2007-03-21

This is a dirt-cheap price for a very underrated Oliver Stone film. Loosely based on the real-life story of Denver radio personality Alan Berg, who was murdered by white supremacists in 1984, "Talk Radio" features an almost maniacally intense performance by Eric Bogosian as radio talk show host Barry Champlain. The setting has been moved to Texas, but the theme is the same: Barry's show takes on any topic, and Barry has an opinion on all of them. He doesn't care who he angers, and he's angering a lot of people. And some of those people mean to harm him.

"Talk Radio" features a strong cast, including Alec Baldwin as Barry's frustrated producer, but this is really a one-man show. It's all Bogosian from start to finish. The film doesn't open up much from its radio station setting, but this does, in a way, heighten the sense of paranoia as people try to get in at Barry. There are less visual fireworks and more talk than we've come to expect from Oliver Stone, but the ideas are challenging and the central performance riveting. The DVD has zero in the way of extras, but this is still a must-see for fans of this director or this actor, or just for anyone who likes some mental substance with their cinema.

This is a must have for all movie lovers and critics. Its a great story line and even better acting.... It is a movie that no matter what time in our lives that you watch it, it will always identify with current events.

Funny, in a disturbing kinda of way.......2007-06-29

I found myself laughing where I should have been cringing and perhaps I shouldn't even be admitting to enjoying the movie (smile), but Pat was a well written comedy with thought provoking points hidden deep within the storyline... VERY DEEP.
For those who like pulp and cult fiction, this is a good one to add to your TBW (to be watched) list.

Worst Movie Made..........2006-03-05

This movie is an abomination of a film. How can people enjoy it? The whole thing was worse than a train wreck (pardon my cliche).
I saw it on TV a while back. I admit to being sucked into the mystery of Pat's gender. However, as soon as I googled it and found out that the truth was never revealed, I immediately turned the film off. There was no other incentive for me to keep watching.
The so-called "evolved" humour is nothing more than one lame joke. I actually cringed quite frequently at some of the gags, which were very immature and not funny in the least.
This film may appeal to adolescent males and permanent frat boys, but no one else. For anyone looking for a intellectually stimulating film, I would certainly not reccomend this one.

A memoriable film that soothes the heart and touches the soul. ITS PAT! is one of the first films to put a gender confused he/she into the spotlight. The only thing holding this movie back from the prestigious 5 star rating is the frusturation I felt after leaving the theatre... Alright you got me it went stright to VHS, but still i felt angry and confused while rewinding my copy of Its Pat.

This 14-disc set is at least the third massive DVD collection with the Oliver Stone moniker. New to this set are two documentaries that aired on HBO: Looking for Fidel (2004), Stone's second film shadowing the Cuban leader, focusing on the regime's iron-fisted defector policy. Persona Non Grata (2003) is an examination of Palestinian conflict. Both of the films have a constantly moving camera, giving us a you-are-there feel to the subjects including Stone, who is seen often. His warts and all interviews are certainly a different type than the usual newsmagazines and are especially interesting in Non Grata since we've seen too many cut-and-dried interviews with these players over the years.

The main theatrical films on single discs have been released before although several of them have been released previously with more content and bonus discs, creating a debate on how "ultimate" this collection is. Otherwise, all his films are here, from his Vietnam trilogy (Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Heaven & Earth), his iconic pop culture films (The Doors, Wall Street, Any Given Sunday), experimental films (Natural Born Killers, U-Turn, Talk Radio), and political operas (JFK, Nixon, Salvador), plus the documentary Oliver Stone's America. --Doug Thomas

COLLECTION ALMOST PERFECT.......2006-10-26

This filmmaking collection is almost perfect, but not quite superior to, the previous Oliver Stone collection that was released. All of his directorial efforts starting with Salvador are included, and they are packaged similar to the way television series dvd sets are packaged (like Grey's Anatomy and Lost), with two overlapping discs per side of the package. Platoon is the special edition that was released by MGM/UA many years back, it is not the most recent special edition. Salvador, Wall Street, and Talk Radio are all the single disc special editions that are available separately. Born On The Fourth of July is the remastered version that was released not too long ago (picture is vastly improved with more natural hues and tones). The Doors, JFK, Nixon, and Any Given Sunday are separately available as two-disc editions and only the first discs of each (basically only the movie) are available in this set. Heaven and Earth and U-Turn are the same as what is available separately, and finally Natural Born Killers is the RATED version of the film, not the Unrated released by Trimark. The picture is much better than the Trimark Unrated release of the film but it is missing up to three minutes of footage needed to achieve an R rating. The NBK disc does include deleted scenes, commentary, and a theatrical trailer. I'm not sure why Warner Bros doesn't release the Unrated version since it does with all of its other films (except for Eyes Wide Shut, I suppose) but whatever. The extra disc on this set includes Stone's recent documentaries Persona Non Grata and Looking For Fidel. It does not included Comandante which is still not available in this country (you can get a Region 2 copy on Amazon.co.uk but you'll need a region free player to play it). There is also a little blurb about Alexander included. Oh, and the documentary Oliver Stone's America is also included including the full version of his student film Last Year In Vietnam. So, all in all this is a great buy. If you really end up wanting the two-disc editions of some of the films after you watch them, you can always buy them later. If you buy this, Alexander (either or both versions), and his upcoming World Trade Center, you will own almost all of Oliver Stone's directorial efforts for a pretty cheap price all things considered. Are you kidding me ???Where can you get 13 GREAT movies and EXTRAS for this price?? I cant believe people that find fault with a set containing so much for so little!!!!Each of these movies is highly entertaining in its own way. A diversified group of films you'll never find in a single collection!!!!I cant believe this doesnt cost$150 or more!!!

Not a Good Deal!.......2005-06-14

This DVD set consists of one outer and two inner Boxes, each has 4 glassy DVD case, 3 double, 1 single. DVDs are not indipendent in this set, so if you want to buy it used, beware of the condition of the box. some movies like "THE DOORS" and "Nixon" are originnaly two discs editions but only first discs are included in this dvd set and worse is, there is a word "disc 1" printed of them which indicates that these are the first DVDs of a 2 disc set and that makes you feel there is something crude about this box set! and there is something really crude!
the quality of boxes and print is low. outer box could easily be damaged or worn and it's very loose. it's not a good deal, specially at the price of 116 dollars!

One technical quibble.......2005-04-06

All great movies, but I couldn't help but notice that every time I try to eject the JFK Director's Cut DVD, the disc pops out of the DVD player and then makes an unexpected move back and to the left.

Money Saver.......2004-12-26

$116 for 12 movies is a gift. You shouldn't complain about second discs being excluded, because the special features are just a marketing tool. They're meant to dissuade people from downloading movies, and it doesn't stop them. No one questions that Oliver Stone is more of the best directors of our time. He's right up there with Martin Scorcese, Ron Howard and Robert Zemeckis. If you're familiar at all with Oliver Stone movies, then that should be what makes your decision. His films are meant to make a message to society. Heaven and Earth is an underrated movie that is very, very hard to find. As a matter of fact, I never saw it individually sold in any store. I wanted to see it for a long time, and was glad when I did finally see it. Talk Radio was more than a little bit disturbing, but it was brilliant at the same time. Natural Born Killers has been one of my favorites for years, as has Nixon, not so much JFK or Salvador but you're paying an average of $9.67 for each DVD, and that's a bargain.

In just five years, Jack Paar changed the way Americans watched television. The first successful host of the Tonight Show (Steve Allen, Ernie Kovacs, and others were given chances prior to Paar), from 1957 to 1962 Paar made the late-night talk show a staple. In an era when celebrity still carried a measure of dignity, Paar both treated his guests with respect and got them, for the first time, to open up to the American public.

As I Was Saying... breaks up Paar's career between three videos. The first tape concerns itself mostly with Paar's pre-Tonight Show life: his start in radio, his stint in the Army, and his early days in Hollywood, where Jack Benny served as his mentor. Paar's Army hitch proves to be a turning point in his life--it was then that he first performed in front of an audience, and his job hosting the acts that come through to perform for the troops brought him national fame and Benny's attention.

The second tape shows the development of Paar's conversational humor, along with plenty of clips from the Tonight Show. There are early clips with Bill Cosby and Woody Allen, clips with Jonathon Winters and Buddy Hackett, and a sampling of Paar's own monologues. Paar's defining moment is explained in detail: after NBC censored a joke he made about a water closet (the British term for a restroom), Paar walked off the show; his return, a month later, is considered one of television's classic moments. He strolled onstage, struck a pose, and looked right into the camera. "As I was saying, before I was interrupted...," he said, and the audience erupted.

The third tape is hosted by Paar himself and is an edited tour through his post-Tonight Show career and life. Almost no mention is made of his failed variety show or brief stint as a Johnny Carson competitor; instead, there are clips of Paar as a guest on Carson's show and on Pat Sajak's short-lived program. There is also footage from Paar's African excursions, which are little more than well-filmed and -narrated home movies. They're nice for Paar completists, but hardly as entertaining as the first two tapes. --Randy Silver

"As I Was Saying & More" is a long-overdue appreciation of Jack Paar's influence on the television medium. As host of "The Tonight Show" from 1957 to 1962, he paved the talk-show road followed by Johnny Carson, David Letterman and numerous others. Paar was a brilliant monologist, cultural observer and undisputed master in the art of TV conversation. Happily, this VHS set includes a generous selection of rarely seen material, with a special video devoted to Paar's guest appearances and later work. The overall collection represents a landmark in television history that should be viewed by all generations.

BUT...A TERRIBLE VIDEO TO DVD TRANSFER ! ! !.......2005-06-26

KULTUR, the company responsible for tranferring this video to DVD, should consider refunding the buyer's money, removing it from the market, and do the transfer over again using state-of-the-art video equipment. It is bad...VERY bad. However, Paar himself is tremendous, as well as the overall program material.

Even though I'm a HUGE fan of the late and great Johnny Carson,
Jack Paar not only was the innovator of the talk show format, but also had the talent to back up those staunch critics who claim he remains #1. I'm among those many.

His classic exchanges with Judy Garland and Jonathan Winters have never been equaled. They're priceless.

Buy this DVD...terrible transfer and all.

The REAL King of Late Night.......2004-06-22

First of all I want to say that I'm only 22 years old. I grew up - being born in 1982 - as a child of the Johnny Carson generation. So obviously I never had the opportunity to enjoy Jack Paar in his prime, so that makes me appreciate this DVD so much more that it is available for the younger generation like myself - who may not have otherwise had the opportunity to appreciate his genius. For years I've heard my father talk about how great Jack Paar was so my jaw dropped when I found another DVD set, "The Jack Paar Collection" at Best Buy a few weeks back. I purchased it and became a quick Paar fan. I then jumped on the internet and tried to find everything I could about Jack and that led me to Amazon and this DVD, "As I Was Saying...And More!" I'm very impressed with this DVD and it contains some very rare footage - including actual kinescope footage of Jack leaving the Tonight Show (Jack tearfully thanked the audience and said "There has to be a better way to make a living") after a joke had been wrongfully censored. A few weeks later, he returned to the show after practically being begged by NBC executives. Upon returning to the show, Jack slyly grinned and looked into the camera and said ever so calmly: "As I was saying before I was interrupted..." All of this footage is on this DVD! There is also a treasure chest of other footage contained in this 2-hour documentary. As for extras, there's a photo gallery and a documentary that Jack hosted about John F. Kennedy. But I think my favorite extra is the actual audio footage (the video is presumably lost forever) of the famous Water Closet joke that caused so much controversy. Hearing this hillarious story (about a misunderstanding between "WC" meaning "Water Closet" - which is a term the British use for a toilet facility, or meaning "Wayside Chapel". This leads to a hillarious story that is not offensive in any way, shape, or form but NBC felt they should censor it, which led to Paar walking off his show the next night. The audio of this water closet segment is on this DVD as an extra so you can judge for yourself how idiotic the NBC executives were for cutting the segment in the first place!

The only beef I have at all with this DVD is actually Amazon's manner of advertising it. They use the description for the VHS version to describe the DVD version. The VHS and the DVD versions are slightly different. The VHS version consists of 3 videos, with one video hosted by Jack talking about his Post-Tonight Show ventures. The DVD does not contain any of this footage (I didn't see any footage of Jack on "The Pat Sajak Show" and the Johnny Carson footage is very brief). So I think Amazon needs to write a better description for the DVD version as its NOT quite the same as the VHS version.

But for any of you out there who are like me and too young to remember anyone else hosting the Tonight Show other than Johnny Carson, you owe it to yourself to pick up this DVD as well as "The Jack Paar Collection". Jack is the real King of Late Night, but that's not to take away from Johnny Carson. If anything, I can see where Johnny has copied many of his mannerisms and his delivery style from Jack.

I agree with the other reviewers about the high quality of Jack Paar's shows. He was the best talk show host ever. He makes Jay Leno look like a real twit. I especially agree with reviewer John Ellis that snippets of the show are just not the same as whole programs. Fans of Jack Paar don't want CLIPS, which are someone's interpretation of what is worth watching. Put the whole series on DVD and let us see them uncut, as they were originally broadcast, commercials and all. Now that would be a worthwhile product!

Enjoyable DVD that has some memorable scenes.......2001-04-26

This is a slightly older Playboy DVD that came out back in 1995. There are 13 video segments here, each around 4 minutes each. A couple of Playmates appear on this DVD, such as Julie Cialini and Jessica Lee, along with Penthouse Pet Amy Lynn Baxter and Newsstand Special model Kim Egler (her only video appearance I've seen so far).

All of the segments here are new, no rehashed footage. There are quite a few good scenes here. Amy Lynn appears with pornstar Tempest in a girl-girl bathtub scene. There is one other really hot bathtub scene worthy of being in a Wet & Wild DVD, by a blonde named Lizz Cufari, as she oils herself up after getting out of the bathtub.

The other scenes were pretty much typical scenes with mostly posing for the camera, a lingerie party, radio DJs undressing while on the air. One nice scene was an air traffic reporter lying in the buff on the wing of an airplane.

This DVD is worth a rental if you can find it, and it's worth buying if you prefer non-Playmates on your DVDs.

A Surprising Video!.......1999-10-31

I never knew the girls sitting behind those microphones were so sexy. This video is quite a surprise for anyone who listens to the radio. Playboy creatively shows us what really goes on in the studio and the true beauty of various radio personalities. The sets, music, women, and acting are all excellent. This is a must have video for anyone interested in radio and women.

Too much New York bias (and I'm an ex-New Yorker who listened to the profiled personalities in my youth) hurt this effort. Tom Leykis and the late great Jean Shepherd were conspiciously missing. The Chicago School (Studs Terkel) wasn't on this video tape at all. In short, this film was a flawed effort, a disappointment.
