Woody Allen was going through his off-screen scandal with Mia Farrow when Manhattan Murder Mystery was produced, so Diane Keaton was brought in to fill the role intended for Farrow. The reunion of Keaton and Allen only improves this already enjoyable Allen comedy, since they're so comfortable with each other's neuroses that they're delightfully convincing as a married couple who suspect their neighbor of murdering his wife. Actually, it's Keaton who obsesses about the possible foul play; Woody just wants them to mind their own business. But pretty soon they've recruited their friends (Alan Alda, Anjelica Huston) as amateur sleuths, and the movie turns into a Nancy Drew mystery for sophisticated Manhattanites. With a typical abundance of Woody Allen witticism and some memorable comic suspense, this engaging throwback to vintage Hollywood mysteries is guaranteed to please even the most noncommittal Woody Allen fans, and the Allen-Keaton chemistry is, as always, a genuine pleasure. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars The Unfunny Woody Allen.......2007-01-09

This is a truly pathetic excuse for a movie. The dialogue is rambling and often incoherent (Keaton looks high much of the time and moves a hand constantly toward her nose), the story is confusing and unconvincing (and has to be explained, twice), the camera work is labored, and the artisie illusions and music are oh, so obviously "in". Worst of all, the film isn't funny. It should be no surprise that Woody Allen soon moved into a much darker genre of film making to occupy his later years.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable movie.......2007-01-06

MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY is a pleasant film that can be enjoyed even by people who are luke warm about Allen and his films. The pace is a bit slow and the "mystery" is not all that exciting but Allen's gags and take on relationships are as usual entertaining and Keaton and Allen make a convincing married couple. The other parts are also well acted. Not a must see but an OK way to spend a snowy evening.

5 out of 5 stars Diane Keaton & Woody Reunite!.......2006-12-31

With public popularity swaying away from Woody Allen, only Diane Keaton could put the wheels back on Woody's reputation. Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993) is a return to the entertaining, laugh-out-loud, slapstic comedic romps we all loved in Woody Allen's Funny Films like 'Take the Money & Run', 'Bananas', 'Play It Again, Sam', 'Sleeper', 'Love & Death' and 'Annie Hall'. The coup de grace in making this film most memorable was the brilliant casting-against-type of Jerry Adler (Mr. Wicker on 'Mad About You') who would later dazzle us as Herman 'Hesh' Rabkin in 'The Sopranos'. Truly one of his greatest triumphs in Funny rather than Intellectual comedy!

Leonard, Toronto, Canada

4 out of 5 stars Woody in (Almost) Top Form.......2006-11-05

Reuniting with Marshall Brickman, who co-wrote the two films that are considered Woody Allen's masterpieces (Annie Hall & Manhattan),
Annie Hall brings us a funny whodunit that also marks his reunion with Diane Keaton. "Manhattan Murder Mystery" was reportedly inspired by a murder subplot that was featured in the original version of Annie Hall. If you've seen Annie Hall, than you know that there is no murder subplot. It was cut from the film entirely. Anyway, Allen and Keaton play a married couple Larry and Carol Lipton. They, of course, live in New York and seem to be basically playing older versions of Alvy Singer and Annie Hall; Larry is a neurotic, film lover and etc. Anyway, one night they meet their neighbors Paul and Lillian House (Jerry Adler & Lynn Cohen); Larry doesn't particularly like them (he's sick of having to look at Paul House's stamp collection), but Carol does...Everything takes a strange twist though when, the next day, Lillian House is dead. Oddly enough though, Paul doesn't seem saddened by it at all which rouses Carol's suspicions. When she mentions to Larry that it might've been murder, he writes it off as crazy. But their friend Ted (Alan Alda) sees this as being logical enough and helps Carol to solve the mystery. Although, mystery might be stretching the word a little bit. Every theory I had while the film progressed turned out to be right in some way and, personally, I didn't really care if it was murder or not because the film was entertaining and funny enough to keep me from caring. The film is funny and entertaining (Allen, Alda, Keaton, and co-star Anjelica Huston all deliver big laughs), it's still not perfect. It drags at times, seems to go on a little too long (odd since it's only 108 minutes). If you're a fan of Woody Allen, however, than you should definitely like it because it's an entry in his filmography that surpasses some others.

GRADE: B+

5 out of 5 stars Woody at his funniest!.......2006-09-01

My wife and I saw this movie in the theatre. We liked it so much we went to see it a second time in the theatre. Then we bought it on VHS. Now I bought it on DVD. This movie is very well written. The character developement is outstanding.

It's a true credit to Woody that I'm not sick of this movie.

I first saw this film nearly fifteen years ago and it really made an impact then. Having time change my experiences and having found myself involved in yoga and eastern philosophy, I now see that this film hits home on many levels. From making you appreciate what you have, to understanding the value of service to others, from the human spirit and to faith in the universe and personal growth. This film has it all.
I'll take it out and watch it again, every time I get caught up in worrying about what I don't have and the illusion we get caught up in, in our materialistic world. Check it out !!

3 out of 5 stars JOY is well-made, but offers nothing new.......2006-03-22

In Roland Joffe's CITY OF JOY, Patrick Swayze portrays an American surgeon who loses a young patient. Unable to accept this loss, he quits his job and travels to India on a journey of self-discovery. Shortly after arriving there, he is mugged. Luckily for him, a poor Indian man (Om Puri) finds Swayze and takes him to the "City of Joy" - a small medical center and haven for the poor and the ill. While Puri struggles to find work and provide for his family, Swayze finds himself becoming more and more fond of the "City" and its people.

Adapted from Dominique LaPierre's novel, CITY OF JOY is particularly enjoyable because the film is as much about Puri's troubled character as it is American star Swayze's character. The harsh environment which the Indian people live in is presented in all its disturbing glory. I can't help but wonder, though, if this is truly what India is like, or whether this is just a play on America's perception of India. From what I've heard, this is a little of both.

The film's big problem is that with its often depressing true storyline and absence of anything really new, there's little to draw the casual moviegoer to CITY OF JOY. Roland Joffe, who did a great job on THE MISSION, brings the same sort of harsh realism to this film; unfortunately, the peerless Ennio Morricone, who also did a great job scoring THE MISSION, provides one of his weakest and least memorable scores. Swayze is an interesting casting choice, delivering a fine performance as "Max Lowe" (how's that for contradiction?); the finest performance, however, comes from Om Puri, who is simply flawless as Hasari Pal. Those looking for a realistic and moving drama may be interested in this film, but there's little for Average Joe Moviegoer to appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-09-07

When you never suffered of hunger, cold or health; you would never if there is any country that has this problems. Believe me there is many countries that has no money at all for the very poor people.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Uplifting Film.......2005-02-21

I've always been a fan of Patrick Swayze, and this is his best role to date. Om Puri, another brilliant actor, went from Indian movie star to International Superstar beautifully acting out the part of a humble yet dignified Rickshaw driver. And any movie that has Om Puri starring in it is sure to be a classic.

This is a wonderful tale about two separate lives who cross paths in the Calcutta slums. One is about Hasari Pal who moves his family from his village in search of work in the city to pay off the money-lenders and to make enough money for his daughter's marriage dowry. The other is about a disillusioned American surgeon, Max Lowe, who quits his practice after a patient dies on his operating table. He runs away to India for some soul searching.

The trip is no so easy affair when Max gets mugged and Hasari brings him to a free clinic being run by an Irish Nurse in the slums. While still trying to come to grips with his own demons, Max begins to involve himself with the clinic and its neighbors, soon coming face to face with the oppressive "godfather" of the community. Max encourages the neighbors to stand up for themeselves. Hasari, whose livlihood depends on the godfather, is reluctant to protest until events begin to spin out of control. Before long, a humble quiet rickshaw driver becomes the town hero.

What I like most about this movie is that Om Puri is the central character, not Patrick Swayze. It is almost too easy make the western foreigner save the day. Patrick Swayze does a brilliant job depicting this balance by allowing his character's hot-blooded, American nature to boil to the surface. In instances where Max is directly involved, the situation only becomes worse, and Max realizes his rough and tumble ways are only short-lived producing little effect. So Max inspires the townspeople to unite against the godfather, and they learn on their own that they can make a difference.

City of Joy has always been at the top of my list as one of my favorite films. A true treasure to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth a look!.......2007-04-27

This is a well studied cautionary tale about the potential perils of car crime. Newark in New Jersey had a reputation in the mid-90s for all kinds of car crimes including carjacking at gunpoint and this film cleverly taps into that era. There was talk about lines being crossed by Newark police officers back then and the movie takes a look at that also. I found it difficult sometimes to decide where to place my sympathies. Yes, the car crime itself is mindless and destructive as anyone who has had their car stolen will know but in the movie, the police often come off looking no better than the criminals they are pursuing.

Gabriel Casseus and Sharron Corley give very impressive performances as Midget and Jason respectively. If you're a car enthusiast like me and, like me, you didn't see this movie when it first came out back in 1995, you might feel the cars (which are important characters in this movie as well) date it somewhat but it's not overwhelming. The best thing about this movie for me though is that although it doesn't preach or moralise, it shows very clearly that for young black men, a life of crime can only lead to a limited number of conclusions. That said, when tragedy inevitably ensues, it's still very sad.

Props to director Nick Gomez - he often gets us right into the cars and takes us along for the joyrides - and props to Spike Lee and his 40 Acres & A Mule filmworks for executive producing the movie. I'll be watching this one again and again.

Banging soundtrack as well, by the way. I might actually get it on CD...

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2006-03-09

I purchased this movie for my teenager son, hoping he could see the harsh reality of what could happen to him following the wrong crowd. This movie showed all the basics and then some.

5 out of 5 stars True to life flick.......2005-10-27

This is about urban life ever made. Nick Gomez carefully winds his tale into car thieves almost into greek tradgy. In the lead role as Jason, Shannon Corley shows great leading staus. Jason is played as a character who wants a better life but is caught up with the street life.

Jessica Alba swivels and pops her way to the top (or at least into Missy Elliot's heart) in hip-hop dance flick Honey. Honey Daniels (Alba, Dark Angel) dances in nightclubs; when she accidentally gets videotaped, a hip-hop video director spots her unique talent and hires her first as a dancer, then as a choreographer. But when he wants her body as much as her talent, how will she sustain her career? And how will this affect her dream of creating a dance studio for the local street kids? Honey is the usual Hollywood silliness, executed with sincerity but not much imagination. For some reason, Alba's sexy gyrations are supposed to be more empowering than other dancers' sexy gyrations, while being no less titillating. Featuring Mekhi Phifer, David Moscow, and cameos by hip-hop stars like Missy Elliot and Ginuwine. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars It's A Story That's Been Done One Too Many Times.......2007-03-18

The only thing that (somewhat) seperates this "beautiful star has good intentions for her 'people in the hood'" film is that the racial lines are clearly drawn and somewhat offending, somewhat comical.

We meet Honey Daniels, who is a Hip Hop Dance instructor at the Community Center by afternoon and a Bartender by night that uses her "after hours" at the club to show off her moves. And, as we all seen coming, she meets a video producer one night at the club who offers her the opportunity she's been waiting for: to choreograph and dance in a music video.

Things on going well until the produce (a goofy looking white boy) puts on the moves on Honey and she shoots him down. And, as expected, this same producer fires her, along with the 'hood kids she got dance parts for in the new video, and hires her dance-archenemy, Katrina.

Honey is so broken hearted; not about her loss, but the loss of those poor kids. So she decides to do something about it: she wants to open her own dance studio. Yet she lacks the funds to get off the ground.

Never one to be pessimistic, Honey devises a plan to raise the money: a dance benefit. She's out pumpin' the neighborhood for donations while, in the meantime, that silly, oversexed white boy of a producer is preparing to produce a new video for Missy Elliot. Elliot shoots the producer down when she finds out her video is going to be choreographed by Katrina (who Elliot describes as a thief of M.C. Hammer's moves) instead of Honey.

Just when Honey thinks she may have a tough go of raising the dough, that goofy lookin' boy pops up again and this time he's begging and pleading and apologizing to Honey trying to get her to come back to work for him. This time, she bursts his little bubble with a resounding "No!"

It's a story that has been done one too many times. As with all the rest, it was okay but will never be ranked as a favorite. I'd recommend it only when cable offers nothing else; you know, like when it's those wee morning hours and there's nothing but infomercials...that's a good time!

3 out of 5 stars Not good, not bad....just entertainment!.......2007-01-04

Don't get me wrong, I actually like this film, but aside from Mekhi Phifer and Joy Bryant's almost non-existent role this film is littered with some of the worst acting I've ever seen. Jessica Alba may be beautiful but she can't act to save her life (at least she can dance) and Lil' Romeo is one of the most annoying little actors/rappers I've ever seen. The story is sweet, even if it has been done a billion times, and the ending will make you smile but just don't expect this to be a movie you rave about. Like I said, I like this movie, I'll watch it...but I can't defend it because as far as Hollywood fluff goes, this is at the top of the list.

One of the main reasons this film falters is that it tries way to hard to be a serious film instead of embracing its mediocre generality and just being that same ol' same ol' slice of American entertainment. By trying to add that `the hood is a hard place' statement and the `do for others not for yourself' morale they end up making this film even more ridiculous and far-fetched than it is initially. It's entertainment, and not all entertainment has to deserve an Oscar. This is a fun way to pass the time, and Jessica moves real nice, so sit back and enjoy the mindless entertainment but don't expect to be see anything new or improved.

3 out of 5 stars Well-intentioned but silly film.......2006-10-29

I stumbled on this while channel-surfing and was pleasantly surprised. The ever sunny and optimistic Honey Daniels holds down two jobs in her increasingly hectic life - a bartender by night and a hip hop dance instructor by day. She has hopes of one day appearing in a music video, a dream that comes true when she catches the eye of a big time producer named Michael Ellis. Not only is Honey a smash in her first video appearance, but Michael immediately hires her as choreographer for one of his projects.
The movie wants to be taken seriously as a realistic view of urban life but very little of what we see ever rings true, starting with Honey herself who, with her invariably perky demeanor, seems like a cross between Little Mary Sunshine and Mother Teresa in form fitting jeans and matching halter top. Everything that happens to her - from her meteoric rise in the music video world to her purchase of an empty store for her new dance studio to the benefit performance she and her dancers stage to raise the money for the project - all come about way too easily and with virtually no noticeable effort on her part. We never believe for a moment that any of this would happen in this way in the real world.
Honey is really little more than an urban fairy tale, fine for children, I suppose, but not of much use for adults with a more pragmatic understanding of how life actually works.

3 out of 5 stars Watch it for Jess and that's about it.......2006-06-24

There are some good and slick moves no doubt but it pales when it comes to real dancing. Jessica looks pretty and hot but there are some silly little kids whom people are raving about particularly one kid whose move Jessica is supposed to have copied in one of her dance sequences in the movie (that's how the story goes). That was one sick lousy move and one that will make you cringe. Honestly that kid sucked. There are tons of kids on Mtv and other TV dance shows that will have your jaws dropping. Check it out for Jessica, otherwise this is no big "dance-movie". There's a sweet romance between Jess and her lover that is worth watching though. If you are looking for good drama and dance check out "Save the Last Dance".

Wanted to give just 2 stars.

In Get Rich or Die Tryin', rapper Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson presents himself as a rap superhero, encased in muscular flesh like armor, his face impassive as a mask, reaching out to destroy his enemies with his unique talent. The plot, though based on Jackson's life, is standard--a gangster breaks from his youthful life of crime to triumph as a rapper--but there's vitality in the details: Jackson's girlfriend helps him pull free the wires holding his jaw shut when he's recovered from being shot in the face; a startling, brutal fight by naked men in a prison shower. Jackson even has his comic-book moment of transformation when a razor blade is thrown into his cell, encouraging him to kill himself; instead, he uses it to carve his rhymes into the walls. Unfortunately, as an actor Jackson only has two sides, gangster hard or oddly childlike and vulnerable. This second aspect falls away from the movie as Jackson assumes power, leaving only the cold, impassive face of a tough guy. That's the fate of superheroes too--they become the mask they present to the world, which is both their dream and their fate. Terrence Howard (Crash, Hustle & Flow) livens things up as a volatile prison friend. Also featuring Bill Duke (Predator) as a raspy ganglord and Joy Bryant (Honey) as Jackson's girlfriend. Capably directed by Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In America). --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

Marcus (50 Cent) has always known he was going to be a rapper. But when his mother is murdered, young Marcus turns to dealing drugs for New York crime boss Majestic to pay the bills. While there, he decides to quit hustling and dedicate himself to his music…but by turning his back on Majestic, he may have signed his own death warrant. Terrence Howard co-stars in this hard-hitting story based on 50 Cent's transformation from gangster to rapper, an unforgettable ride from tragic beginning to triumphant end.

4 out of 5 stars Strange Bedfellows.......2007-03-27

Firstly, I am a 59-year old grandmother and rap and the drug culture are far out of my realm. However, while channel surfing one evening, I came upon this movie. (My daughters of fans of 50-cent's music and I was curious). This movie was intriguing and although offended by the violence and language, it was an opportunity to be non-judgmental and look at the story and the quality of the movie. I saw it to the end. It would be difficult to see this movie again, but I thought it was a good one. The actress who played his son's mother was outstanding, and the protaganist was very convincing.

I am sick of y'all 50 haters!if u dont like him why you watch this movie.you should stick to your great pop rappers like nas([...] lover),fat idiotic joe, jadakissmya*s,ja fool and the lame game.and why r u guyz keep comparing every new rapper with tupac and biggie.First of i never like biggie nor tupac and niether nas.yeah they should be legends(in ya'll minds)but they were studio gangstas.if you wanna talk bout tupac check his history deeply and you'll know that he was RAPED in prison and biggie is so scary, ugly fat piece of crap.if ya'll wanna know that this film is reality or fake then theirs one big evidence and that evidence is called "bang em smurf".he is not with g unit now but he still says that all the thing 50 raps about is not fake.50 is gangsta.go check his any interview if ya want.and bout game his own brothers says that he was some stipper not GANGSTA.ANYWAYS [...] all ya [...]this movie wass best cant wait for upcoming 50 movie with n.cage and samule jackson.fu*k tupac, biggie, nas, fat joe, game, jadakiss or any rapper you compare him with.50 IS BEST MC,GANGSTA,WRITER,ACTOR FOREVER.

2 out of 5 stars Embarrasing first crack at the movie biz.......2006-08-05

You'd think 50 or Sheridan was smart enough to base the movie on someone other than 50-well, it was supposed to be loosely based on his life, but that's dangerously territory to tread. It was way more funny than it was thuggin'. It wasn't completely a waste. It was good for a few laughs from time to time. If you think this is bad, check out Cam'ron's Killa Season. That movie flat-out sucks, but it sold more on the streets than 50's dud did in theaters!

4 out of 5 stars A tender portrait of passion and dignity regained..........2006-12-18

In the mid-'70s, Malle embarked upon a decade-long visit to America where, after 'Pretty Baby,' a sensitive but finally tedious look at child prostitution in 1971 New Orleans, he makes 'Atlantic City', in which an aging small-time mobster sees his romanticized memories of villainy become reality when he acts as father confessor, protector and, finally, lover to a lonely young croupier...

Part romantic comedy, part thriller, part fairy-tale, the film is simultaneously mythic and rooted in reality and charms through its wry acknowledgment of human delusions and its tender portrait of passion and dignity regained...

"Atlantic City" received critical acclaim and was nominated for five Oscars (best actor, best actress, best director, best film and best original screenplay), although it won none... It was to be Louis Malle's most successful film...

5 out of 5 stars Viva Atlantic City.......2006-07-17

Actors of Burt Lancaster's caliber are, sadly, long gone. They looked like men, acted like men and could be sensitive when the scene called for it, but, always in a manly way. What happend to all the strong male leads? Sigh, anyway Louis Malle captured the seediness of Atlantic City and the powers that be attempt to "turn a whore into a lady" and reap the obscene profits from the gambling industry. Lou, a low level, outdated mobster left over from a bygone era, is attracted to a down on her luck waitress, wannabe black dealer, well played by the exausted looking Susan Saranden before she became a humorless political activist. Enter her loser exhusband and brainless, hippy, very pregnant, sister. They need a place to crash and hide since exhubby also got a hold of some cocaine that belongs to the mob. Also, putting Susan in harms way, since the mob wants their cocaine back. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars AN INTENSE CHARACTER STUDY DEPICTING HOW ONE MAN CLINGS ONTO OLD HABITS YET SURVIVES A FAST CHANGING WORLD.......2006-03-13

FIRST THOUGHTS:

Seeing trailers of this film that showed Burt Lancaster in an uncharacteristically rueful light kept me from seeing this wonderfully understated film for 26 years!

IN A NUTSHELL: SHOWING RATHER THAN TELLING MAKES FOR GREAT STORYTELLING

For 104 minutes we live a few days of Lou's [Burt Lancaster] life with him. We see what he sees, and feel what he feels. Through the showing of his daily grind, we come to empathize, and eventually to respect the man that he is, though he desperately wants to be someone else.

WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT: [WARNING -*- PLOT SPOILERS BELOW -*-]

So who is Lou? Lou is an aging relic who lives in today but whose mind is on yesteryears long past. Yet -- he still is what he seems always to have been, a wanna-a-be gangster. Right now, his daily routine consists of looking after an old widow for cigarette money and cheap rent, collecting quarters as a numbers runner, and watching Sally [Susan Sarandon] through his venetian blinds. It is watching Sally perform her evening ritual of undressing while squezzing lemon juice over her arms and breasts that is the high point of his recent existence. Doesn't sound like much, but all that changes rather quickly when Lou seizes the opportunity to become a big-shot, sugar-daddy for Sally by literally stumbling into drug trafficing. It was quite by chance, but also by design, and Lou finds himself in for some high-stakes which involve some mortal risks. How he resolves the risks is at the core of both the film, "Atlantic City" and Lou, the human being.

THE EFFECT OF THE FILMMAKERS:

The director of the film, Louis Malle, a renowned French filmmaker, weaves his story of life in America's bottom rung from the perspective of someone on the outside looking in. Though it may not be an objective perspective, it is a relatively fresh one with an effective script by John Guare, who also wrote, "The Six Degrees of Separation". The effect of Guare and Malle on "Atlantic City" was simply to breathe new life, and a fresh angle into the "Crime/ Romance-Drama/ Casino/ Drug-Ring/ Life-Choices" genre which had long ago become a very tired and cliched topic.

ABOUT THE DVD:

It is an excellent widescreen transfer, but has only one theatrical trailer for a special feature, and you can choose English subtitles if you are hard of hearing.

BOTTOM LINE: POTENT FILM

This is a much better film than I expected it to be. Put simply, Lancaster and Sarandon had great chemistry, and ignited every scene they were in, especially in those they were in together. "ATLANTIC CITY" is a case of excellent acting combined with a taut script that shows rather than tells, which always spells - potent film.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful Malle.......2006-01-22

"Atlantic City" is one of Louis Malle's finest films. It is an engaging picture from beginning to end, portraying the annihilation of America's past. This is the result not only of Malle's vibrant direction, but also of a lively screenplay (by John Guare), a playful soundtrack (by Michel LeGrand), and polished performances by Susan Sarandon, Burt Lancaster and a cast of talented supporting players.

Sarandon plays an ambitious working girl who labors in a clam bar by day and studies to be a croupier at night. It's her desire to graduate from the gambling parlors of Atlantic City to the more prestigious casinos of Monte Carlo. Lancaster portrays an old man who shares an apartment in the same condemned building as Sarandon. He is rooted in the romantic past, at a time when gambling provided illegal thrills and Atlantic City was devoid of its tawdry modern gloss. The lives of these two people converge on the Boardwalk, where they share a tangle of bizarre adventures involving a variety of fascinating friends and strangers.

The unusual relationships which develop between the young and old characters mirror the atmospheric ambivalence of Atlantic City, where vintage architecture stands side by side with sterile steel modernity. Malle emphasizes the contrast through the use of intriguing images. Few films feature such a memorable sequence of opening scenes. As the credits roll, viewers witness the destruction of a massive old building. It crumbles in slow motion, to the accompaniment of a soundtrack punctuated by the beat of jackhammers and wrecking balls. This shot fades to the sight of Sarandon slicing lemons at an open window. While Lancaster peeps from an adjacent apartment, the object of his gaze bathes her upper body with lemon juice. One "juicy" scene succeeds another in "Atlantic City." The outrageous interplay of beauty and decay, the silly and the serious, contribute to an exotically humorous, intriguing plot. Few films are as intelligent or entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Lancasters last great role and Sarandon's first.......2005-12-08

One of the great American films was actually produced by France!

Burt Lancaster plays aging bagman Lou. He has a long distance voyeurism of Sally (Susan Sarandon) a waitress at the Casino seafood bar and wannabe blackjack dealer. He also is the bodyguard of a faded beauty queen, Grace (Kate Reid).

What brings everyone together is a visit by Sally's brother and pregnant girlfriend. He has "found" some cocaine and is looking to sell it in Atlantic City. Lou sees an opportunity and grabs it. When the crooks catch up they kill Sally's brother. But Lou has the stash. After a shootout with the crooks, Lou and Sally leave Atlantic City.

This takes place in the 1980's Atlantic City which was before all commercial casinos came to town. Malle uses this city in the midst of change as a small microcosm of the flux that the United States was in. Lou represents the old regime that is trying to hold on to the old ways. Sally represents everyone trying to get ahead in the new America that is more interested in the bottom line than the people who make the money for them.

Both Lancaster and Sarandon deservedly received Oscar nominations but Kate Reid also gave a superlative performance.

This is a film to be savored like a fine wine, that only gets better with age.
