While Ally McBeal garnered more attention, Picket Fences garnered more acclaim. It was justified. Set in Wisconsin, the Emmy-winning drama plays like The Andy Griffith Show by way of The Commish. The focus is on small-town life from a law and order perspective. The action revolves around Sheriff Jimmy Brock (Tom Skerritt), his physician wife Jill (Kathy Baker), and their children, Kimberly (Holly Marie Combs), Matthew (Justin Shenkarow), and Zack (Adam Wylie). Storylines alternate between personal issues, like puberty and pre-marital sex, and criminal cases. As Matthew quips, "Things happen around here." At city hall, Jimmy works with officers Kenny (Costas Mandylor) and Max (Lauren Holly), dispatcher Ginny (Zelda Rubinstein), and coroner Carter Pike (Kelly Connell), who likes to exclaim, "Let me exhume the body!" Judge Henry Bone (Ray Walston) and attorney Douglas Wambaugh (Fyvush Finkel) dominate the courthouse. Cases include such tragi-comic crimes as a serial bather ("Frank, the Potato Man") and a cupid killer ("Be My Valentine"), but serious issues also come into play, such as assisted suicide ("Sacred Hearts") and incest ("Nuclear Meltdowns"). Unlike Twin Peaks, to which it was sometimes compared, Picket Fences could be heavy-handed, but piety never trumped entertainment, and Baker, Skerritt, Walston, and Finkel all won Emmys for their work.

Notable guests are a hallmark of every David E. Kelley production, from Chicago Hope to Boston Legal (and beyond). The first season attracted Carnivále's Michael J. Anderson ("Mr. Dreeb Comes to Town"), Evening Shade's Michael Jeter ("Frog Man"), and Man of La Mancha's Richard Kiley ("Thanksgiving"). The series also features one of the last of the old-fashioned orchestral scores, Stewart Levin's distinctive piano theme. Picket Fences ran for four seasons on CBS (when Kelley left between seasons three and four, ratings took a nosedive). Looking Forward to Seasons Two, Three, and Four .......2007-07-04

Whew - I'd forgotten how good this show could be sometimes! A quirky show for its time, tackling alot of issues and willing to take a stand on the said issues, more or less allowing viewers to form their own ideas. I watched a good part of the first season but then started to lose track with the following seasons so I'm definitely looking forward to coming DVD releases - this DVD set does feature a short featurette, featured on the last DVD disc - interesting to see everyone at the present.

Ground Breaking Show (really).......2007-07-01

Many other reviewers have covered the various aspects of the main players. So I won't rehash them in my review.

I missed the majority of the first season, picking it up when whatever it was that ran against it went to reruns. I entered Rome WI without any idea of the towns history or the background of the characters.

Without this history, the story lines and characters seemed very odd, but also very entertaining. I stayed with Picket Fences when the other show returned and picked up the earlier shows over the summer.

What first fascinated me was the complexity of the characters and bold daringness of the topics the show addressed. Later, in his other shows, David Kelly's penchant for interesting quirks and humor have become standard fare. But 15 years ago, there were so few quality shows tackling sensitive issues without resorting to such black and white positions. David's risks were indeed groundbreaking.

I must state that I am a life long liberal, and like most people who accept a "label" my positions on a number of issues are black and white to me and I can't understand those whose views are counter to mine. However, David's writings and the actors hired to flesh out the characters did give me a greater understanding on such issues as anti-abortionists, proponents of hand guns, and other social issues. While they didn't change my view, they did take the vitriol out of my arguments and allow me to "hear" what the other side was saying. All the while providing an entertaining median.

If you're a recent David Kelley fan, or one who picked him up with Allie McBeal, Boston Public, The Practice, or Boston Legal, you should take a trip to Rome WI where you will see the seeds sown for his later shows. While I enjoyed all of the shows referenced in this paragraph, (and being a Bostonian, it kills me to say this) I'd prefer to be back in Rome, with Judge Bone, and the edgy fresh writing I discovered there.

One final thought. If you've not seen Picket Fences before, give it a chance into Season Two before you write the show off.

Almost as I remembered it..........2007-06-27

I was so pleased to see the release of "Picket Fences" on DVD. I have been waiting years for this release. I have tried to watch Kelly's "Boston Legal" and I see so many of the themes (and, sometimes, story lines) from "Picket Fences" being recycled. Yes, "Picket Fences" does play as an overdramatized version of 'The Andy Griffith Show' at times. The stories are strong. The acting, almost always, spot on. I've watched a few episodes I haven't seen since the show first aired... I'm happy to be returning to Rome, WI.

Rome and Boston - World's Apart.......2007-06-25

Being such a huge David E. Kelley/Boston Legal fan and seeing the extraordinarily high ranking Picket Fence held on the Amazon pre-order list, I thought that I was in for a huge treat.

Needless to say, although Mr. Kelley plays a predominant role in both shows, Picket Fences is definitely not his best work. Boston Legal is both hilarious and brilliant. He deftly weaves in an out of current issues while consistently making you laugh and, occasionally even shed a tear. Picket Fences, on the other hand, is rarely funny, is especially heavy handed with issues/preachy, and, although it may not have played this way at the time, compared to the hard hitting/off the wall shows of today, it comes off as incredibly quaint. Matlock quaint. Senior citizen quaint.

15 years is an epoch in TV land. There's not a lot of 15 year old TV that I'm running out to watch/buy. I may have loved/waited with baited breath to see certain shows then, but now, I'm off to bigger and better things.

Historically, Picket Fences is well situated. Picket Fences fits in very comfortably with the shows of it's age. A little too comfortably, I think. In some ways it feels like an amalgamation of other shows from that period. Here's my best guess at how it breaks down.

10% Family Ties
50% Northern Exposure
30% Degrassi
10% Matlock

If you're yearning to wax nostalgic, give this set a shot. If, on the other hand, you're looking for entertainment that can stand up to the scrutiny of the present day, you might want to look elsewhere.

After seeing this movie all I have to say is I hope Hugh and Drew will continue to pair up again in other movies. Their onscreen chemistry was unmistakable. And besides the great music heard throughout the supporting cast Brad Garrett, Haley Bennet, Kristen Johnson, and Campbell Scott was equally amazing. For people who don't like Hugh Grant, this movie will change your mind!!

There are good types of movies you can see. Different types. Not just action/adventure/fantasy films like "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Harry Potter," but there are some comedies like spoof, and others are romantic comedies.

I have to admit that one of the first most calmest things of a movie genre is a romantic comedy. Especially, when there's lots of love songs. So, watching a movie like "Music and Lyrics," perhaps, you should be entertained with lots of love, excitement and joy through a romantic comedy.

"Music and Lyrics" opens up with Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) singing the song with his band in an 80's style music video called "Pop! Goes My Heart." And that's what makes a movie like "Music and Lyrics" shine, and for the lots of its parts, it works.

The movie tells the story about Alex Fletcher, who is in a band. He is one of the most popular bandsman. He one days meets a lovely woman, Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore), when Sophie waters the plants in his house. Together, they come for a good song to write for them, as singers, to perform.

But on the other hand, a young pop star, by the name of Cora Coleman (Haley Bennett) wants to have Fletcher write another song for her. Now, see that's one thing for Alex to work it out with Sophie, maybe yeah, along with his businessman, Chris Riley (Brad Garrett). But their work has brought them faith, friendship and love.

Honestly by trying to be a movie critic, I can know of old romantic comedies, like "Meet the Parents" and "50 First Dates," that I found "Music and Lyrics" to be charming. It has plenty of appropriate humor for the teens, yet kids can try to understand the humor at age 10.

Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore are great together as the lovely romantic comedy couple. They perform a great performance and their singing is incredible. When it comes to music, they are both absolute geniouses, and that's what a type of a movie "Music and Lyrics" should be like. But another great star of the film is Brad Garrett as Alex's businessman, Chris Riley. He sure is funny with his funny humor, and that's another thing that shouldn't stop you from seeing "Music and Lyrics."

If you like romantic comedies, you should definitely enjoy "Music and Lyrics." There's plenty of humor for the teenagers and kids who are older than 10, maybe 8 or 9, should enjoy this movie. I, for one, can take this movie with a lot of movement and feel, and that's what you should get with a movie like "Music and Lyrics."

No surprises equal Surprisingly good!.......2007-06-29

This movie was cutesy, campy and trite. It was a cliche parody of itself from the beginning. And that is part of what makes it so wonderful. It doesn't try to pretend to be something it't not.

Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore are thrown together in the oddest and most unlikely of circumstances when Grant, a throwback to the 80's pop music scene, is offered a chance to write a song for an un-and-coming 21st century teen queen that is an almost annoyingly accurate parody of Shakira, Christina Aguilara and a host of other would be starlets you could name.

When a struggling Grant can't seem to find the words to express his heart's melody, Barrymore walks in completing a pairing that is as wonderful personally as they are professionally.

This is a darling comedy/drama/romance/whatever you'd like to call it... I highly recommend it!

This is an adorable boy meets girl type of movie. I had heard through friends that this was a great movie but was even more pleasantly surprised after watching it! Great feel good movie and wonderful satire of the 80's music scene.......especially love the opening video clip!!!!

What's not to love about this movie? It's witty, fun, funny, and a great story. When you break it all down the films just down right entertaining. It is rare, these days, to find a film that has both a captivating storyline and the ability to have you rolling on the ground laughing. It is even rarer to find a movie that you can watch over and over again without tiring of it.

Let me explain; Music and Lyrics is almost exactly like a good song. The first time you hear it, you think 'hey, this is catchy' and you decided that you like it. The next time you listen to it you pay attention to the lyrics, and find out that you love the song even more. I realize I stole a metaphor from the movie itself, but it's true. The first time you watch the film you are sucked into the story; from the very first panel you are captivated. It's just so absurd yet so clever that you can't turn away. The banter in the film is so entertaining, but since you won't catch everything in the first sitting you'll want to watch it again. This time paying more attention to the banter, you'll be busting stitches as you listen to what these people are saying.

Hugh Grant is brilliant and Drew Barrymore pulled off her role flawlessly. The two main protagonists have so much chemistry everything just clicks. They defiantly found all the right people for this movie, even Brad Garrett, who didn't have much of a lime light role, was perfect. Whoever cast this movie is a genius, everything just works.

Music and Lyrics follows the life of a former 1980's pop star named Alex Fletcher. He was a big deal back in the day, but after his boy band broke up he fell out of the mainstream spotlight. Now he works as a 'has-been' act performing in hotel showrooms, state fairs, and amusement parks for his now middle age fan base. However, he won't be able to keep this up for long since new 'old acts' like the Spice Girls are popping up on his territory and stealing the spot light. To reclaim some glory Fletcher teams up with Cora Corman, the current reigning pop sensation, for a duet...only one problem, Fletcher has to write the song by Friday. He teams up with the girl who waters his plants, Sophie Fisher, to write a hit duet that Cora will approve of.

Music and Lyrics is defiantly a worth while investment for any movie lover. I've watched it four times since buying the DVD last week, and every single time I watch I find something new and hilarious that I had missed in the first few sittings. If you love straight face comedy, witty banter, or simply good movies...you must add this film to your collection. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

There's an extra coat of hot wax on Pixar's vibrant, NASCAR-influenced comedy about a world populated entirely by cars. Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is the slick rookie taking the Piston Cup series by storm when the last race of the season (the film's high-octane opening) ends in a three-way tie. On the way to the tie-breaker race in California, Lightning loses his way off Route 66 in the Southwest desert and is taught to stop and smell the roses by the forgotten citizens of Radiator Springs. It's odd to have such a slim story from the whizzes of Pixar, and the film pales a bit from their other films (though can that be a fair comparison?). Nonetheless, Cars is another gleaming ride with Pixar founder John Lasseter, who's directing for the first time since Toy Story 2. There's the usual spectrum of excellent characters teamed with appropriate voice talent, loads of smooth humor for kids and parents alike, knockout visuals, and a colorful array of sidekicks, including a scene-stealing baby blue forklift named Guido. Lightning's plight is changed with the help of former big-city lawyer Sally Carrera (Pixar veteran Bonnie Hunt), the town's patriarch Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), and kooky tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). The Incredibles was the first Pixar film to break the 100-minute barrier, but had enough story not to suffer; Cars, at 116 minutes (including some must-see end credit footage), is not as fortunate, plus it never pierces the heart. Trivia fans should have bonanza with the frame-by-frame DVD function; the movie is stuffed with in-jokes, some appearing only for an instant. Ages 5 and up. --Doug Thomas

An Instant Classic!.......2007-06-30

I would rate this along the lines of "Toy Story" as far as a child's ability to relate and enjoy the film, and for staying power.

My 3 year old son is addicted to this movie. The "speed" and "lightening" and even the classic music used in the film (Route 66 and the first song I heard right after getting my driver's license at 16 - Life is a Highway) make the perfect blend for a life-long HIT!

The actual story is original - tying racing with the story of Route 66. The characters are likable and entertaining for ALL ages!

Whether you are 3 or 103, I think you will enjoy the originality, comedy, music, action and even a little bit of romance! Two thumbs up and a must- have for all animation film collectors!

In need of some repair .......2007-06-28

Pixar usually makes children's films that also appeal to adults on many levels, including jokes that fly well above the heads of youngsters. My son, who is three, loves to watch the first ten minutes of "Cars." Then he gets extremely bored and stops watching. Good films, such as "Finding Nemo," "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" and "Toy Story," will hold his attention for the duration. (He knows "Finding Nemo" from start to finish and has watched it, at minimum, fifty times.) I also enjoy good children's movies (I know most of the lines from "Finding Nemo"), yet I find this film tedious. At a runtime of nearly two hours, I cannot sit through the entire movie in one sitting and even then have a difficult time watching all of it. It starts out well enough and the ending, with its positive messages of friendship, loyalty and good sportsmanship, is quite good. Much of the material in between, however, is fairly weak. Scenes drag on far too long and are just plain dull. The messages could have been conveyed in fewer and more truncated scenes and still have been as effective. The basis for a very good film here is certainly evident. As usual, Pixar's animation is excellent and the tone is just right for kids: simple without being condescending and with very sparse scatological humor (which is an astonishing feat, given Larry the Cable Guy's involvement). The voice acting is well cast and features uniformly fine performances. With more judicious writing and editing, "Cars" could have been another Pixar classic. (2.5/5 stars)

One of the best animated features ever!.......2007-06-24

Every medium has its own unique opportunities, with animation its the ability to express emotion that has universal appeal without all of the trappings that come with an actor of a specific gender, race, etc.

The cars in Cars are more human than human. This is a very touching movie and true quality family fare. Its a great movie to buy- we watch it over and over and over.

Can't believe this didn't win the Oscar!.......2007-06-20

I watched this with two aging race drivers: one a local dirt track champion and the other a former NASCAR Winston Cup driver. We all loved this movie. Besides being a high quality animated presentation, my companions pointed out the accuracy and realism regarding the racing episodes and techniques that was evident to them. This movie will be a classic!

Not an ideal choice for younger kids, this hip and violent animated feature from Disney was nevertheless a huge smash in theaters and on video, and it continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed Broadway production. The story finds a lion cub, son of a king, sent into exile after his father is sabotaged by a rivalrous uncle. The little hero finds his way into the "circle of life" with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place. Characters are very strong, vocal performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane, and Whoopi Goldberg are terrific, the jokes are aimed as much (if not more) at adults than kids, the animation is sometimes breathtaking, and the music is more palatable than in many Disney features. But be cautious: this is too intense for the Rugrat crowd. --Tom Keogh

How good-looking is the DVD restoration of Disney's popular animated film? Take a look at the serviceable but dull film clips incorporated in the plethora of extras and compare them to the vivid gorgeousness of the film presentation. This "special edition" also adds a 90-second song ("Morning Report") that originated in the lavish stage musical. To Disney's credit, the original theatrical version is also included, both restored and featuring two 5.1 soundtracks: Dolby Digital and a new Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix, which does sound brighter. As with the Disney Platinum line, everything is thrown into the discs, except an outsider's voice (the rah-rahs of Disney grow tiresome at times). The excellent commentary from the directors and producer, originally on the laser disc, is hidden under the audio set-up menu.

The second disc is organized by 20-minute-ish "journeys" tackling the elements of story, music, et cetera, including good background on the awkward Shakespearean origins at Disney where it was referred as "Bamlet." The most interesting journey follows the landmark stage production, and the kids should be transfixed by shots of the real African wildlife in the animal journey. Three deleted segments are real curios, including an opening lyric for "Hakuna Matata." Most set-top DVD games are usually pretty thin (DVD-ROM is where it's at), but the Safari game is an exception--the kids should love the roaring animals (in 5.1 Surround, no less). One serious demerit goes to the needless and complicated second navigation system that is listed by continent, but just shows the same features reordered. --Doug Thomas

This classic story is filled with important life lessons presented with appropriate viewer language. My kids have been introduced to how all life is connected on this planet. It is a great resource for kids to associate how life works between species. The family story is also important. All of this packaged with great songs and enchanting performances from the actors.

This is a great story and it's told with very good music intertwined with the dialogue. "The Lion King" and other Disney animated films are good entertainment keeping me occupied on my daily treadmill walks. I find that I enjoy them as much as I did when I was a child.

I have a 6 and a 2 year old. They love this movie. I've been looking all over trying to locate it for our movie library. The quality of this movie is awesome. The sound effects are great. I notice they've added a few more songs to the movie since it was first viewed in 1994. I was pleased to see that my two year old was not afraid of the hyenas. He thinks that scar is mean. Moreover, he insist on watching it every weekend.

One Feature Length Advertisement In A Series Of Feature Length Advertisements.......2007-04-15

The problem with this movie is the same problem I see in 90% of movies released by Disney. Although I seem to be the only person to notice this, most Disney movies are a beginning and an end with little to no substance in the middle. In this film for instance, Simba is your normal curious, happy and mischevious child just of course, he's a lion who is next in line to become the next king. His father is thrown off the side of a mountain killing him which causes Simba's problem. Led to believe he is the cause he runs into exile. Good way to start an animated Children's movie I think. About 7-10 minutes later he's grown and on his way to reclaim his place. Where the depth of the story should be is put into a short montage instead of showing his feelings and growing up and when he accepts his reponsability you never fully get a feeling of how hard it is for him. And how easily convinced he is to come back is lame in it self. Timone and Pumba are good characters to have an mixed with The Hiena's(however you spell that) make for really funny characters. But the story as most Disney movies sucks and is really just recycled from every other Disney movie. With exception of the Pirates Of The Carribean movies the company really has done nothing I see should give it half the hype it gets. And on a quick side note. Am I the only one who feels like Disney only spits out these movies to create the endless stream of merchindise that makes the weakest of characers a god in the Disney world. I mean, you can buy an action figure of the midget in the Pirate movies and making Snot Rod who appears in Cars for like 1.5 minutes in like 5 diffent toy car forms that I've seen. Disney Movies in General are nothing more than 85 minute long comercials for a slew of cloths, toys and other worthless collectables. The whole reason the Pirates of The Carribean was ever conceived was to advertise a a ride within Disney World. You can say movies like Dogma, Scarface and The Exorcist are evil. But none try to draw your worship and aww harder than Disney. In other words Disney is the real Devil and Watching Disney movies will damn you to HELL!!!-haha. (for real. watch if you want. but if people gonna dog my taste for being more racey I'm gonna spend that judgemental pendelum around and let you think about what could truly be a sin against God. Remember the 1st Commandment and see if Disney isn't trying to go against it with the way it attempts to pound these characters into your and your kid's head so much that it;s as if these movies, merchindise and mouse ears are the worlds greatest gifts to mankind as if Mickey Mouse is Jesus Christ himself reincarnated as a dirty f**kin' rat)

Though Inland Empire's three hours of befuddling abstraction could try the patience of the most devoted David Lynch fan, its aim to reinvigorate the Lynch-ian symbolic order is ambitious, not to mention visually arresting. Instead of speaking backwards, mystic soothsayers and criminals speak Polish. Filmed on video, the film's look has the sinister, frightening feel of a Mark Savage film or a bootlegged snuff movie. Constant close-ups, both in and out of focus, make Inland Empire feel as if a stalker covertly filmed it. A straightforward, hokey plot unravels during the first third of Inland Empire to ground the viewer before a dive off the deep end. Actor Nikki Grace (Laura Dern) is cast as Susan Blue, an adulterous white trash Southerner, in a film that mimics too closely her actual life with an overbearingly jealous and dangerous husband. When Nikki and co-star Devon (Justin Theroux) learn that the cursed film project was earlier abandoned when its stars were murdered, the pair lose their grasp of reality. Nikki suffers a schizophrenic identity switch to Sue that lasts until nearly the film's end. Suspense builds as Nikki's alter ego sleuths her way through surreal situations to discover her killer, culminating in Sue's gnarly death on set. Sue's actions drag on because any sign of a narrative thread disappears due to idiosyncratic editing. Non-sensical scenes still captivate, however, such as when Sue stumbles onto the soundstage where she finds Nikki (herself) rehearsing for Sue's part. In this meta-film about identity slippage, Dern's multiple characters remind one of how a victim can become the hunter in their fight for survival. Lynch's portrayal of Nikki/Sue's increasing paranoia is, in its own confusion, utterly realistic. Laura Dern has created her own Lady Macbeth, undone by her guilt over infidelity. These were the opening words that Lynch spoke during his introduction for INLAND EMPIRE at various theaters around the county in early 2007. If we are willing to trust Lynch's choice of words, this quote from the Upanishads opens a small window into the world of this film. Admiring any artists' work, requires a certain amount of trust in the artist. Their job is to ask questions (through their work) and our job is to verify what is true for ourselves. But that process is not necessarily a linear or an intellectual one. Such is the case with INLAND EMPIRE's complex meta-physical web. I consider this film to be a 21st century Alice in (a) wonderland (of hell). And in this film, hungry ghosts abound.

Having read the Amazon reviews, I wanted to take mine in a slight different direction. Not since Eraserhead has Lynch had the artistic license and freedom to create a film so free of typical constraints. And having evolved as a filmmaker, he has established his own distinct palette of colors from which to work. There is a good deal of continuity from one project to another and these qualities can be a clue as to the enigma that is INLAND EMPIRE.

Despite our human nature to try to make sense of unfamiliar territory, Lynch is not only aware of this natural tendency, but not interested in explanations. His job is to create something very visceral within the narrative of a story infused by the world of ideals. This is what makes his work so damn challenging - we are so busy hanging on to "rationality," we undervalue intuition and our ability to sense what we experience. It is also a testament to the many levels on which Lynch's films work. Rather than grasping at any "meaning" that may (or may not) be there, it has become more interesting to me to see how far I can allow myself to be absorbed into what I am seeing and experiencing. Lynch's ability to lay out very effective ground rules is what elevates his work into the realm of Hitchcock, Bunuel, Fellini, and others. And like a Buddhist sand mandala, what appears to be a flat one dimensional thing, turns out to be multi-dimensional house of many mansions. Lynch films are not for the passive.

I would have to echo the sentiment that Lynch's work, does not have a "center" or a set "reality," in a typical sense. Not taking this into account and trying to figure out meaning, if not fun, will be very frustrating for many. And it is often here that much unjustified criticism is leveled at Lynch and the extraordinary thing he his doing cinematically. In a Lynch film, the only reality is the fact that he made a film and that there is an audience in the theater watching it. Beyond that, as in the dream world, you are on your own. When I first saw INLAND EMPIRE, I knew it was going to be a long movie, and I accepted the fact that I was about to pay my money and, as if I was at a carnival, going to be taken on a little ride (in tandem with a few thousand companions). Before I knew it, the ride was over and I found myself walking out of the theater, a little dizzy and wondering what the hell I just saw. Woman in trouble, indeed. Amazing film.

Lynch spoke about what we could expect in terms of a DVD release and he mentioned that it was going to be fun and include some really great things. This looks to be the case!

I'm definitely buying this. I haven't seen it, but, it's David Lynch. Even when he's bad he's brilliant. He has a fantastically rich imagination, and if Mary Sweeney did the editting on INLAND EMPIRE, then it will be well worthwhile.

Lynch's films delve our subconscious civilisation and represent our social repressions. He is a master, an auteur, a genius.

People first considered Eraserhead to be long-winded and meaningless. From what I've seen of the INLAND EMPIRE trailers, it seems very similar in approach to Eraserhead's surreal abstraction. Not so much long-winded and meaningless as in-depth and weighty.

It may be that his method is in flux right now, and what we get is to enjoy the madness of our own subconcious exegesis as represented by an artistic visionary.

Give yourself a lobotomy instead!!!.......2007-06-20

This movie is a complete waste of your time! It makes no sense! There is no continuity and one boring scene leads to another and so forth. Give yourself a break and save your 3 hours for something that will enrich your life, because this ain't it!

This is my favorite Lynch film ever. Let yourself go and experience this film multiple times and you'll "get it". There is definitely a story here, but the story exists on many different planes. As for people who say it has no emotional impact, shame on you. There's a ton of emotion here, actually almost too much to mention.

My advice- sit back and absorb. We will never have this much artistic brilliance in the US ever again.

With out going into detail of what the film may or may not be about, I will say that it is possibly the most disorienting and disturbing piece of cinema I have seen in a very long time...maybe ever! By the end of the movie you feel like you've been slapped around in your seat for 3 hours. But considering how boring and nonexperimental movies have become today this is a wonderful thing. Highly Recommended!

Hollywood's legendary "woman's director," George Cukor (The Women, The Philadelphia Story), transformed Audrey Hepburn into street-urchin-turned-proper-lady Eliza Doolittle in this film version of the Lerner and Loewe musical. Based on George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady stars Rex Harrison as linguist Henry Higgins (Harrison also played the role, opposite Julie Andrews, on stage), who draws Eliza into a social experiment that works almost too well. The letterbox edition of this film on video certainly pays tribute to the pageantry of Cukor's set, but it also underscores a certain visual stiffness that can slow viewer enthusiasm just a tad. But it's really star wattage that keeps this film exciting, that and such great songs as "On the Street Where You Live" and "I Could Have Danced All Night." Actor Jeremy Brett, who gained a huge following later in life portraying Sherlock Holmes, is quite electric as Eliza's determined suitor. --Tom Keogh

Way Over-Rated, and Often VERY Unpleasant!.......2007-06-29

Yes, it is a nice Cinderella story, and Audrey plays a fine role.There is an excellent message about the ingrained Brit Class System circa 1910..And there are some nice costumes, mainly women's hats, at the Horse race..Add to this a few memorable songs..So what is the problem with this ? Mainly, the near- nauseating character of Higgins, an old fashioned snob and misogynist of the ugliest type, who we have to watch sneer and scold for the better part of two hours! Not pretty! True, Pickering is a nice counterpoint, and really a decent old chap, but Higgins is the main character, and to watch and listen to this old goat goes well beyond a pleasant way to spend time! The song and dance numbers are hardly even third rate. Any comparison with a 1940's-50's MGM musical puts this one to shame! No dancing to speak of, and very low production quality..Then again, this was Warner, not known for musicals!..And there is a claustrophic sense here that says , "How can I get away from this miserable phonetics teacher?" It's near impossible..I can think of at least 30 musicals far and away above this, not just MGM, but Fred and Ginger, and so forth..In fact, 3-stars may be too kind for this one, since it is way below the hype!..Also, check out the 1930's PYGMALION with Wendy Hiller and Leslie Howard, and you can easily see how almost the entire movie (MY FAIR LADY) was completely taken from PYGMALION, including the sets and dialogue..About the only thing new is the songs, which are fun and amusing, but not really in the top tier of great musical tunes.

Is the Creator Responsible for His Creation?.......2007-06-12

I had not watched this marvelous movie for many years when I took the opportunity to watch it again. The movie is a little stiff in places, but that stiffness seemed, to me, to enhance the formality of English high society. Audrey Hepburn belies that stiffness with her free-spirited characterization of Eliza Doolittle. Eliza contrasts nicely with Henry Higgin's mother, played by veteran actor Gladys Cooper ("The Happiest Millionaire," "The Song of Bernadette," and "The List of Adrian Messenger"). Mrs. Higgins is quite proper and perfect in every situation. Henry, played by the incomparable Sir Rex Harrison, is disdainful and aloof. Henry believes he is the remote scientific observer who can categorize and stereotype everyone, and is not affected by his surroundings.

A problem arises when Henry Higgins bets Colonel Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White, "Ten Little Indians" (1965) and "In Search of the Castaways") that he could take anyone, such as Eliza Doolittle, and turn them into something like a lady's maid or a shop girl. Colonel Pickering takes Henry up on his bet, volunteering to finance the experiment.

Looking at the next part of this movie with five decades of life, I quickly saw the problem that Henry was getting into. Henry was taking a human life adjusted to a certain set of surroundings, modifying that life so that it no longer fit in, and was then prepared to cast that life adrift once he proved his point. Henry failed to see that he did anything wrong, and therein lies the irony and pathos of this movie. The question a first-time watcher asks is whether Henry will be able to grow up at last and realize that people require compassion and empathy and are more than science experiments.

In addition to a marvelous story, this movie boasts wonderful music and excellent sets. Though some of Audrey Hepburn's singing survived, Marni Nixon sang most of the music attributed to Hepburn. Nixon's singing was phenomenal and her singing voice is close enough to Hepburn's that it sounds as though Hepburn could be singing.

Other singing numbers contained extensive choreography on expansive sets. Two complexly choreographed songs that come to mind are "Get Me to the Church on Time" and the "Ascot Gavotte."

This movie featured an array of sets depicting street scenes and interior scenes. Though the street scenes were excellent, my favorite set in the movie has always been Henry Higgin's incredible library. I would love to have his library in my house, though duplicating that library would be incredibly expensive.

This movie won 20 awards, which includes eight Oscars. Rex Harrison won the Best Actor Oscar and the movie won the Best Picture Oscar, both highly coveted awards. Harrison won many other awards for this film, and "My Fair Lady" became the most awarded movie of 1965.

Of course, awards do not necessarily mean a film is either good or great. However, Rex Harrison, Audrey Hepburn and Wilfrid Hyde-White have such incredible acting skills and such screen presence that they make this film a joy to watch. I was spell-bound as I watched Audrey Hepburn become Eliza Doolittle and capture the hearts of everyone in the movie. Rex Harrison was incredible as Henry Higgins. This movie was either Harrison's best, or one of his best.

The story is also captivating. Henry Higgins experiments with the life of a human being. What Henry Higgins failed to realize is that once he became involved with his subject, he lost his objectivity and learned compassion. Love can come from compassion. The only thing that surprised me in this viewing of the movie is that I previously had not realized how early in the movie that Eliza Doolittle had come to love Henry Higgins.

"My Fair Lady" is one of the best musicals of all time. The combination of story, acting, singing and sets is amazing. Fans of musicals and love stories will enjoy this movie, even on multiple viewings.

The DVD does not work in Ireland so it is absolutely useless!! I should have been made aware of this when I was purchasing the product. I would like to be refunded in full for the three DVDs I have purchased: My Fair Lady, Paris when it Sizzles and Breakfast at Tiffanys (purchased at the same time)
Also the packaging costs were not displayed until i had entered my credit card number and were much too expensive.
Overall i am extremely disappointed with my experience and I expect to be compensated for this.

Slick Las Vegas illusionist Buddy "Aces" Israel isn't playing nice. Turns out, he's telling mob secrets to the FBI. I enjoyed the film from beginning to end, but I wish it came with a FAQ I could consult for when my old brain got weary.

SPOILERS ABOUND.

For example, what was Alicia Keys supposed to be doing while her female partner kept watch ovber her from an adjoining tower with the world's biggest gun? Was Keys supposed to go in and seduce somebody--Jeremy Piven I guess? If so, she just seemed like an airhead. The whole plot with those two, and the woman who procured them, could have been dropped with ease, though the film did gain something from seeing two beautiful black women act like old pros at assassination. (Though like I say, they prove singularly incompetent at it, so perhaps it wasn't a great victory for black positivity.) Why not get Pam Grier in the film, if you're tipping your hat to her. Don't get these wannabes, get the real thing! (Though again, Alicia Keys shows some surprising talent as an actress and the other woman, the one I recognize from HUSTLE AND FLOW, knows how to steal every scene she's in, though she fails with the howitzer.)

Director Carnahan has learned from Tarantino, De Palma, Coppola, and much of the film seems like he's mashing together THE GODFATHER II with De Palm's SNAKE EYES and even RAISING CAIN. The multiple narratives interstice with ease and in fact provide a lot of the fun of the film, though maybe they detract from whatever serious points the writer's trying to make. And in the end--

they positively ruin the moral crisis Ryan Reynolds is supposed to be undergoing. He's trying, but he can't anchor a crazy, out of control movie with his anguished expression, his dead man's walk, and those distracting arrowheads of dried blood smeared across his face. Ryan Reynolds and gravitas, you're in a clown show and you're the only one who doesn't know it.

Joe Carnahan's SMOKIN' ACES is a strange movie, and definitely one that was poorly marketed. TV ads and trailers make ACES out to be the illegitimate child of Guy Ritchie (SNATCH, LOCK, STOCK, AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS) and Hong Kong action movies: violent, but with a breezy, carefree manner and a dry sense of humor. This couldn't be farther from the truth, as ACES is incredibly twisted, incredibly intense, and by the film's third act, incredibly serious.

The film's plot is follows a race between a motley crew of assassins and two FBI agents as they all try to reach Buddy Israel, a Las Vegas showman with connections to the mob, before the others. The actual story turns out to be much more complex, but the reality is that it's all fodder to propel the superb ensemble cast towards the film's explosive climax.

The acting is uniformly brilliant, with Ryan Reynolds turning in without a doubt the most impressive performance of his career. Like Will Smith before him, Reynolds has successfully made the jump from likeable, charming comedic actor to full-blown dramatic lead. His performance alone gives the film it's moral grounding. The rest of the cast, from Jeremy Piven as Israel to Ray Liotta as one of the Feds to music stars Common and Alicia Keys are all outstanding. Also outstanding are the action set pieces, which strike a fine balance between gritty chaos and cartoonish choreography.

Writer and director Carnahan builds the tension slowly but surely throughout the first two acts, and by the time the third act literally opens with a bang, the build up has reached an almost unbearable level of stress. This aspect of the film is handled expertly. Where the film falters is in its tone, which starts off with a level of comedy and general insanity that fails to connect properly with the film's shockingly dramatic conclusion. While Carnahan litters the picture with strange little character mannerisms and traits (read: insanity), they ultimately overwhelm and pull ACES away from its rock-solid premise.

SMOKIN' ACES is not a normal film, and definitely requires a slightly tougher, more "hardcore" sitting from its audience. Still, while the film is often compared to Tarantino's works, ACES is better simply because of its basic, shelled out storyline and less emphasis on inconsequential dialogue. ACES is worth a viewing (maybe two, as it seems to make more sense and be more easily appreciated the second time around) for the action scenes, Ryan Reynold's performance, Clint Mansell's pitch perfect music, and a stunning dramatic conclusion that, while easily predicted, is none the less enjoyable.

Alicia Keys looks great in this movie. anyway, i liked the action and the twist and turns the story took, but i believe you really have to be attentive to understand the story....i know i don't.

Crashed my XA2.......2007-06-29

I find it to be unfortunate for buyers of this media to be forced into quality checking what should've been checked by the manufacturer prior to release. I was enjoying the movie prior to this disc locking up my player to the point of having to turning the player off then back on to reset. YES my player works with other discs, tested that. I own both Toshiba HD-DVD XA2 and Sony BDP-S300 Bluray players, Universal cannot afford quality control issues to keep pace with the competition!

Wildly Entertaining.......2007-06-29

I have looked over some of the reviews that have been posted for this movie, and it amazes me that every schmoe that gives it a one star rating states that the movie is nowhere near Academy Award material. I'm sorry to be the one to have to elighten you folks, but not every movie IS. That's why few are nominated, and only one takes the cake. If you watch every movie in search of world shattering material, you're going to be let down 99 times out of 100. Sorry to say, not every movie can be 'Pulp Fiction', or 'Traffic', but movies can also be either entertaining, or boring. Now I'm no rocket scientist, but I do believe that when I saw this movie in theaters... I was very far from bored. The movie is full of good acting and wild screen play. I loved it. If you're one of those people, of which there seem to be many on here, who are just dying to throw mud at something simply because it isn't golden... then you should probrably wait till the end of a year and pick a movie to watch that has some awards under it's belt. For the rest of society that just wants a bang for their buck, this movie delivers. The end.
