This remake of a 1947 film noir casts David Caruso (freshly escaped from TV's NYPD Blue) in the role originally played by Victor Mature. He plays Jimmy Kilmartin, a reformed criminal struggling to keep straight and keep his wife (Helen Hunt) from going back to the bottle. But a favor for his cousin lands him back in the clink, and when his wife dies, he comes out ready to make a deal with the D.A. He becomes an informant, joining the crew of Little Junior Brown (Nicolas Cage), a pumped-up, asthmatic psycho who weightlifts strippers for amusement. Eventually, Jimmy finds himself forced to keep his radar up for treachery from both the criminals he's finking on and the cops he's working for. This film, directed by Barbet Schroeder, didn't do much business, despite a powerful but controlled performance by Caruso and a scarily splashy one by Cage. --Marshall Fine

4 out of 5 stars wonderful Cannon MovieTale version.......2007-05-21

It's very rare to have a screen version of SNOW WHITE that tries to stay faithful to the original Grimm Brothers fairytale. This rendition, part of the fabulous Cannon MovieTales series, does tell the story with a faithful eye to the original material.

Young Snow White flees into the forest after her jealous stepmother the Queen (Diana Rigg) tries to have her killed. The girl finds a safe haven with seven dwarfs, but her life is threatened once more when the Queen discovers her hiding-place. After several thwarted attempts to kill her, the Queen conjures up a poisoned apple...

As in the original Grimm Brothers story, this version depicts the Queen in several disguises trying to kill Snow White, using a tight-fitting bodice, a poisoned Japanese hair-comb, and finally the poison apple.

Diana Rigg plays the evil Queen with relish. Nicola Stapleton plays little Snow White, with Sarah Patterson ("The Company of Wolves") playing the older incarnation.

The Cannon MovieTales series was filmed--rather economically--in Israel, where producers had access to a wide range of appropriate locations. Most of the films have now found their way to DVD (the series also includes "Hansel & Gretel", "Rumplestiltskin", "Sleeping Beauty", "The Frog Prince", "Red Riding Hood", and "Beauty & the Beast").

(Single-sided, single-layer disc).

4 out of 5 stars snow white! much better than the disney version!.......2007-01-29

I have seen several version of the beloved fairytale and this has to be the best one i've seen. I enjoy the disney version but this one sticks to the origional grimm story. The queen gets snow white with the corset, the comb, and the apple. I also think the romance is more touching than the disney version and that is what i love about fairy tales. The songs are more catchy as well. I like "everyday","the one i long for",and "let it snow" I have seen this cannon movie tale and sleeping beauty and really enjoyed both and i recomend them to anyone who loves live action fairy tales or at all.

5 out of 5 stars Grimm story reborn........2006-06-26

Brothers Grimm stories are far less cutesy than we think. This version is much closer to the original German story without being quite so grotesque. It is certainly closer (and in a way more interesting) than Walt Disney's version. I don't like the names for the dwarves (there Disney is at least more memorable). The Dwarves are very good, led by Billy Barty. Diana Rigg as the Queen must have loved doing this stuff. She is to the hilt and just shy of over the top. Delightful. The King is okay, the 1st queen not so hot. Young Snow White is just too precious, but the grown up heroine is very good. The songs are okay to very good. They aren't wonderful, but they don't jump out as awful either.

5 out of 5 stars The Fairest One of All!.......2006-05-20

Legendary stars Billy Barty and Diana Rigg bring one of the world's most beloved fairy tales to life in the Cannon Movie Tale, "Snow White." Starring beautiful and charming Sarah Patterson (The Company of Wolves) in the title role as the princess who fled her wicked, jealous, and murderous stepmother's castle as a child, "Snow White" tells the tale of how the princess is taken in by seven kindly dwarfs living in a cottage in the forest. As the dwarfs go off to dig in their mines each day, Snow White cooks and keeps house for years, growing into a sweet and lovely young woman. But, as Snow White grows ever more beautiful, the evil queen grows ever more jealous. Consulting her magic mirror and book of spells for ways to terminate Snow White, the dwarfs must repeatedly undo her vicious magic. It seems the final spell is beyond even the dwarfs abilities to break though. Their only hope lies in a young prince who is returning home from a long journey still seeking a great discovery to satisfy the longing in his heart.

"Snow White" sits among the best of the nine wonderful Cannon Movie Tales, which are among the best live-action fairy tale films available to date. Sticking more closely to the original stories from the Brothers Grimm, "Snow White" and the other Cannon tales mix in simple but fun-filled songs with fantastic casts and writing that blends realism and fantasy seamlessly. "Snow White" features some of the best songs in the lot, and it's clear that Diana Rigg really has a ball with her villainous role. It's so terrific that these childhood favorites many of us remember from the Disney Channel's 1980's and early 90's glory are finally available on DVD (most of them at least). The DVDs include trailers (not sure if these films ran anywhere theatrically), and "Snow White" is the only one of the four that I currently own that is presented in a letterbox format (though not much of one). The Cannon Movie Tales are mostly family fun, though be warned that some can have their scary moments (for example, "Red Riding Hood," my favorite, is done as a werewolf story that at times may be a bit frightening). The other Cannon Movie Tales, all of which I highly recommend, are: Rumpelstiltskin, The Emperor's New Clothes, Red Riding Hood, Puss In Boots, Hansel and Gretel, Beauty and the Beast, The Frog Prince, and Sleeping Beauty. Those last two have not yet been released to DVD, and I have yet to see Rumpelstiltskin at any retail stores, though Amazon seems to carry it. I wish to get them all, but currently only own my favorites: Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Puss In Boots (starring Christopher Walken!), and Hansel and Gretel. Fairy tale fanatics should own all these films, and I also highly recommend my top favorites, the Disney animated versions. Also, for a scarier version of Snow White, pick up the outstanding, "Snow White: A Tale of Terror," starring the beautiful Monica Keena. More recommendations: Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre collection (also best known from the Disney Channel airings), Shrek and Shrek 2, The Slipper and the Rose (for a live-action Cinderella), Ever After (another live-action Cinderella), The Adventures of Pinocchio (1996), Peter Pan (2003), The Wizard of Oz, Return to Oz, and Rodger's and Hammerstein's Cinderella (1965) among others!

5 out of 5 stars snow white.......2006-03-02

When i saw this version of Snow White, it became my vavorite. It brought this fairy tale to life better than I have ever seen,
it stayed with the Brothers Grimm story very well. I have also
seen their Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, and Rumplestltskin
all of these have been a favorite of mine.

Richard Widmark's bravura debut as snickering gangster Tommy Udo, and particularly his infamous encounter with an old woman in a wheelchair, enjoys such pop cachet that the movie itself has been somewhat underrated. More's the pity. Henry Hathaway's third entry in 20th Century-Fox's series of post-WWII thrillers is just about the best of the bunch. These films incorporated the semidocumentary techniques and wondrously persuasive on-location shooting Hollywood learned from Italian neorealism and the wartime filming of some of its own best directors. Kiss of Death is more fictional than documentary in thrust, with a solid script by ace screenwriters Ben Hecht and Charles Lederer. But that only makes its imaginative, atmospheric use of real places and spaces--e.g., a superb opening robbery sequence in a New York skyscraper--the more remarkable.

Victor Mature belies his rep as one of the Hollywood star system's bad jokes with his intense performance as Nick Bianco, a career criminal driven to turn squealer. Nick's motivation is family values: although he had gone to Sing Sing (yes, they filmed there, too) as a stand-up guy, "the boys" failed to take care of his wife and daughters as promised, with devastating results. Despite the best efforts of an assistant D.A. (Brian Donlevy), Nick is forced to lay everything on the line to rescue his family's future. The movie abounds in evocative texture, thanks to the no-frills excellence of Norbert Brodine's camerawork and an exemplary supporting cast including Millard Mitchell (as a sardonic police detective), Karl Malden (another D.A.), and Taylor Holmes (a flannel-mouthed Mob shyster). Kiss of Death was remade twice, as a Western titled The Fiend That Walked the West and as a straight thriller again in the '90s. --Richard T. Jameson

Henry Hathaway's directorial skills brought a heightened sense of realism to crime dramas in this classic 1947 original that marked Richard Widmark's Oscar -nominated debut. When a small time crook (Victor Mature) gets a twenty year sentence for robbery, he refuses to reveal his accomplices, even after a D.A. (Brian Donlevy) offers to help him. But he changes his mind once he learns that his wife has committed suicide and a psychopath (Widmark) has threatened his children.

4 out of 5 stars You don't think of great noir when you think of Victor Mature........2007-05-17

This isn't great but, as Nick, the protagonist, Mature is pretty good. But Richard Widmark, as Tommy a psychopath criminal, is absolutely riveting. The scene, later in the movie, in which Tommy pushes an old lady in a wheel chair down the stairs is classic. Nick is a criminal too but more sympathetic. He has a wife & kids to feed. He get caught during a jewel heiat & everyone else escapes. The district attorney D'Angelo (Brian Donlevy) has a soft spot for Nick. He offers to let him walk if he helps convict the rest of the gang. Nick refuses to talk as his mob lawyer assures him his wife & kids will be taken care of while he's in jail. Then his wife commits suicide & kids are sent to a orphanage. He decides to help the cops, is released & goes straight. He gets the kids back & marries their baby-sitter (?). She's kind of young for Victor Mature's character, but she did visit him while he was in prison. Eventually the gang & Tommy come to trial & Nick testifies. Tommy is found "not guilty". Tommy is upset with Nick because they were friends & Nick ratted him out. Violence will ensue. The climax is suspenseful with a good payoff. You like Noir? See it.

5 out of 5 stars Snickering Gangster!.......2007-04-08

First of all, I must say I love all of these fox film noir classics. I own many of them and hope to own them all eventually. This film is the debue of Richard Widmark and by his performance, it's easy to see why he became a star. He plays a snickering gangster and he plays it well. Victor Mature and Brian Donlevy are great also. I recommend it highly.

3 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT VINTAGE NOIR.......2006-09-18

Richard Widmark got a best supporting actor Oscar nomination and became a movie star with his impressive portrayal of psycho gangster Tommy Udo in KISS OF DEATH (1947).

This is the one where Widmark ties up a goon's wheel chair bound mommy and gleefully shoves her down the stairs.

Victor Mature is outstanding as a jailbird who makes a deal with the DA to cooperate in nailing Udo. The no nonsense script is hard as nails. Extras include a pretty good commentary and original theatrical trailer.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic From the 1940s.......2006-08-28

This movie is an excellent buy for those who enjoy classics of the 1930s - 40s. I especially enjoyed Richard Widmark's performance in his first role as the unstable, evil-laughing gangster Tommy Udo. Victor Mature does a respectable job as the former miscreant trying to start a clean new life by cutting a deal with the district attorney to "squeal" on the nasty Udo. All-in-all, it's an enjoyable classic that I would definitely recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Great Camera Work and a Memorable Villain Highlight This Film Noir........2006-08-02

"Kiss of Death" was directed by Henry Hathaway based on an unpublished story by Eleazar Lipsky, who had been a district attorney in New York city. Hathaway also made "Call Northside 777" and "The House on 92nd Street", both docudramas inspired by true stories, and he tried to accentuate the authenticity of this material as well. The film was shot on location in New York. Those really are the Criminal Courts and Chrysler buildings and The Tombs and Sing Sing prisons. In fact, Hathaway had the cast "processed" through Sing Sing to add a dose of realism to their performances. One could debate which of Hathaway's films, "Kiss of Death" or "The Dark Corner", is the more "noir". They both qualify but deviate considerably from noir themes at times. "The Dark Corner"'s Bradford Galt is a quintessential noir protagonist, while "Kiss of Death" is best remembered for its villain, the sadistic Tommy Udo, who launched Richard Widmark into a series of unforgettable low-life roles.

Unemployed and unemployable due to his prison record, with a family to support, Nick Bianco (Victor Mature) returns to a life of crime. Briefly. He's caught robbing a jewelry store. Assistant D. A. D'Angelo (Brian Donlevy) offers Nick a reduced sentence if he squeals on his cohorts. Nick refuses, confident that his family will be cared for by his partner and his sleazy lawyer (Taylor Holmes) while he's in Sing Sing. Three years later, Nick learns that his wife has died and his daughters have been placed in an orphanage. When he receives a visit from Nettie (Coleen Gray), a young woman who used to babysit his girls and who harbors feelings for him, Nick realizes that his friends reneged on their promise to support his family. So Nick decides to take D'Angelo up on his offer. D'Angelo wants to get the goods on Tommy Udo (Richard Widmark), a bloodthirsty, sociopathic mob killer. But if all doesn't go precisely as planned, Nick will have the most ruthless, sadistic assassin in New York hunting him.

"Kiss of Death" begins with an evocative title sequence in which a woman's hand reaches for a revolver, tantalizing the viewer with the implication of sex and violence to come. Curiously, the sequence has little to do with the movie. There are guns in "Kiss of Death", but none in a woman's hand. Yet the hand that clenches that gun is clearly that of a woman, with long, shaped nails. Maybe this is evidence of how strong and alluring the image of femme fatales had become in crime films as of 1947. A voice-over narration introduces us to Nick Bianco, also unusual because it is the voice of a woman. It's Nettie, telling us how Nick was forced into a life of crime by circumstances. Her voiceover will recur at several points during the film, always sowing sympathy for Nick. "Kiss of Death"'s attempts to make Nick out to be a victim of poverty or social injustice have been interpreted by some critics as an element of social conscious -however muddled- in this hardened crime film. Honestly, I think it is a device to create sympathy for the protagonist and nothing more.

Nick Bianco is a good guy -if a little crooked- in a corrupt world, where doing the right thing is as risky and nearly as sleazy as being a hood. Nick remarks to D.A. D'Angelo, "Your side of the fence is almost as dirty as mine." Victor Mature could dazzle in everything from sleazebucket to persecuted nice guy roles. But the greatest star of "Kiss of Death" might be Norbert Brodine's camera. The film's best scene has the camera in an elevator, as Nick tries to make his escape while the elevator makes its way from the 23rd floor to the lobby. The anxiety is palpable. The silence is oppressive. It's brilliant. Our introduction to the villainous Tommy Udo is also daring. The first time we seen Udo, he is out of focus and taking about sticking his thumbs in someone's eyes. There's nothing vague about Tommy Udo, yet there he is: blurry. Richard Widmark gives a gleefully sadistic, rhythmic performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination. Udo is, indeed, a fine example of Widmark's considerable talent, though not an example of his depth, as Udo is two-dimensional.

The DVD (20th Century Fox 2005): There is a theatrical trailer narrated by Walter Winchell (2 min), a Stills Gallery of 9 movie posters, and an audio commentary by film noir scholars Alain Silver and James Ursini. The commentary is consistently good. Silver and Ursini discuss "docu-noir" films, the visual and auditory implications of location shooting, themes, imagery, actors, analyze the ideas behind each scene, and relate some anecdotes about the notoriously tyrannical Henry Hathaway. Subtitles for the film are available in English and Spanish, dubbing in Spanish.

Alec Baldwin reprises a role he originated in Craig Lucas's off-Broadway smash (which later had a Broadway run without him) in this touchingly romantic, funny, and underrated fantasy. He falls for a woman (Meg Ryan) at first sight and marries her, but, on their wedding day, an elderly stranger wanders into the reception, kisses the bride, and trades bodies with her. Once Baldwin figures out that something is amiss with the Mrs., he must track down the old man, in whom resides the spirit of his true love. This is a beautiful allegory about the nature of love and the commitment to give oneself in sickness and health, for better or worse, to achieve a true meeting of the spirits. Prelude to a Kiss was directed with a light touch by the late Norman Rene, with strong performances by Baldwin and Ryan. --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I will love you forever, no matter what.......2006-09-08

When we tell someone we love them, what do we mean by that? Do we mean we like the way they look? Do we mean we like to make love to their body? Love is a word that is used to describe a lot of very different feelings.

Let's say you are a guy, and you fall in love with a girl and tell her that you will love her forever, no matter what. Then she turns into an old man. Will you still love her? If not, what did you mean in the first place?

Who are we? Are we our bodies? Are we the people we see in the mirror? Or are we something else? Are we eternal souls inhabiting temporary mortal bodies? If so, what do we really look like?

Alec Baldwin falls in love with Meg Ryan and marries her. Before the wedding reception is over, Meg Ryan has traded bodies with an old man. The woman that Alec Baldwin finds himself honeymooning with is some strange old man in Meg Ryan's body. It doesn't take Alec long to figure it out, either. He knows soon enough that this isn't the girl he married.

Will he ever find the real Meg Ryan again, the one now in an old man's body? How will they react to each other? Will the two displaced souls ever return to the bodies they were born in? Why did the transfer happen in the first place? Is the old man some kind of evil spirit that takes advantage of young people by stealing their bodies when he gets old?

This movie could have been played many ways. It could have been a horror flick about a demon who possesses the bodies of his victims. It could have been a very intense and moody story of love and doubt. Imagine how it would have played out, if a powerful actor like Richard Burton played the Alec Baldwin role, or if a fiery Al Pacino played the role. As it was, Baldwin did a very bland job of it, but that fit into the overall atmosphere of this movie, which is usually light hearted, not very intense. It would have made a more powerful statement about love if someone like Richard Burton played the leading male, and it falls into the category of perhaps romantic comedy, or romantic fantasy, with bland Alec Baldwin, but that works too. I don't know how seriously you want your audience to take this plot, unrealistic as it is, so you may want to downplay it with Alec Baldwin.

Who is kissing who in that title "kiss"? Actually, this is a very sweet and romantic movie that may even make you cry. There may be some realism in it, if we do in fact live on after death, if we are not limited to our current bodies, if our souls can have a gender that is different from our current body. As for the ability to trade bodies with someone else, so-called "possession", I wouldn't bet on it. I've never heard of a "near death experience" that mentions possession.

This movie can be compared to Invasion of the Body Snatchers, All Of Me starring Lily Tomlin and Steve Martin, and even the tv series Wife Swap. It is fairly close to All Of Me, but the Tomlin-Martin movie is much funnier and sillier. Lily's soul ends up at times in a bowl of water, and I think in a horse. I'll never forget the scene where the priest thinks that there is a connection between a toilet flush and the telephone.

As a post-script, who are the morons who gave my review a thumbs down? It happens to be a great review. Why would some total moron object to it?

4 out of 5 stars strange but good.......2006-02-28

It's a good movie, even though oerall it's kinda strange....show's what real romance is

5 out of 5 stars Rainy day music.......2005-06-15

I love the story line. I think the actor's portrayal met with the mood and speed of the film with perfection - along with the music. But I think the soundtrack is is also a "star" in its own right. Something that can break or make a good film. In this case, the soundtrack has a wonderful mix of melodious sorrow - celebration and heartbreak uplifted in song. Its a soundtrack I can listen to any time, no matter what mood I'm in. But it's REALLY great on rainy days.

4 out of 5 stars A Romantic Variation on the Changing Body Theme .......2005-06-13

This movie is yet another entry in the genre that includes two versions of "Freaky Friday" and a host of other movie, where two people exchange bodies. Typically these movies are played for laughs. However, in this movie the opportunity is taken to explore the meaning of romance and love.

On their wedding day, just moments after their vows, an old man (Sydney Walker) approaches Rita Boyle (Meg Ryan) and Peter Hoskins (Alec Baldwin) and asks if he can kiss the bride. At that moment the sky darkens, and suddenly the two have exchanged bodies. The old man walks off abruptly (we learn why at the end of the movie), and all appears as before, except Rita seems a bit different.

Peter and Rita go on their honeymoon, but Rita is clearly not the same person that Peter knew before their wedding. Rita seems to have different interests, and she hangs around older people. She also seems disinterested in consummating their marriage. Eventually Peter figures out that somehow Rita and the old man have exchanged bodies, and Peter must track the old man down. I dare not reveal more for fear of giving away too much, but the ending is touching, warm and very well done.

This movie takes opportunities that most movies in this narrow genre have not. The movie explores the true meaning of love, and where love resides. The movie also explores how well we know someone, and whether we are ready to love someone in even the strangest circumstances. I rated this movie much higher because of the approach this movie took to love and the relationship between Peter and Rita, and how well this movie pulled it off. The only scene that made me uncomfortable was where Peter kissed the old man. Fortunately, the entire scene in its context shows how deeply Peter loved Rita.

This movie has a wonderful supporting cast, including Kathy Bates as the daughter of the old man, Ned Beatty as Rita's father, and Patty Duke as Rita's mother. I liked each of the three in their roles, but I particularly enjoyed Patty Duke as Mrs. Boyle.

Movies rarely surprise me any more. I usually at least know generally how the movie will come out. I suppose I knew how this one would end, but the moral of the story and the tasteful way in which Rita and Peter's relationship was handled, even when Rita was in the old man's body, was nicely done. I recommend this movie for lovers and romantics everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars A Love Story with an Enchanting Twist - Don't Miss It.......2004-07-29

We all know that love should be more than just physical attration, and yet few movies go beyond surface appearance and sugar-coated banter. Prelude to a Kiss is the wonderful exception. It takes us beyond the usual preditable plot and gives us a rare insight into what is really important in love.
An enchanting and well-wrought script supported by excellent performances, this movie speaks to any who listen with their head and heart.
Humor, magic, and mystery are interwoven as a husband searches for his wife who is missing but still there. I don't want to give the plot away. Watching the story unfold is part of the movie's charm. I will say that you will be surprised and, I hope, moved by the story and message this fine piece of filmaking brings to us. One of my all time favorites. Don't miss it.

Description

In Barbet Schroeder's gritty thriller, David Caruso is an ex-con who's lured back into a life of crime for one last heist. When a detective (Samuel L. Jackson) offers him his freedom in return for turning on a gangster (Nicolas Cage), he becomes a reluctant pawn caught between federal agents and the mob. Helen Hunt, Stanley Tucci and Michael Rapaport co-star in this stylish, streetsmart film noir.

3 out of 5 stars just a flick.......2006-11-11

kiss of death was ok not an award winner although nicolas cage was great as a villian.. get this if your just in the mood to watch something but remember it is not anything too great just above the entertainment level

3 out of 5 stars Good story. Acting left a little to be desired........2006-08-02

Frankly I enjoyed this film. I love Helen Hunt and Samuel L.Jackson. I thought that Nicholas Cage seemed a little bit amateur but as this film is 11 years old, perhaps he was at the time or perhaps it was just the psychotic role that he was interpreting. On the whole, I found it engrossing and quite exciting.

4 out of 5 stars Peaks and lows!.......2005-09-16

Based on the colossal and unbeatable homonymous film of 1947, Schroeder seems to be more interested to remark the personal double tragedy experienced by Caruso, jailed and widow in the first the third part of the movie and his painful redemption to fight against the bureaucracy and try to convince the gang headed by Junior and Omar.

Helen Hunt despite her brief performance, gets involve us with her undeniable talent and charisma. Stanley Tucci shone as the implacable agent behind the traces of Kilmartin. This is the actor that (in my personal opinion would have reached the peak performance as Gerard Lieutenant in The Fugitive despite the fact Tommy Lee Jones won the Oscar). Tucci has been underestimated by most directors in films like this. Imagine a film with Tucci and Chezz Palmitieri together in a mob movie. Well there is still time to do it.

Nicholas Cage looked extremely overacted, Vig Rhames is far to convince too. These two performances demerit the dramatic balance of the film, pitifully. I know the comparisons are hateful but please, watch the gradual transformation of emotions experienced by Al Pacino in previous films such Godfather II , Carlito 's way or Donnie Brasco, for instance. The rage must emerge gradually through a wide number of emotion layers.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Mob affiliated movie !.......2004-05-21

At the time of it's release it was the best Mob movie since Goodfellas. But by no means can you even compare Kiss of Death to either Goodfellas , King of New York or Casino. It's a decent mob movie w/ great actors such as Nicholas Cage and Samuel L. Jackson who plays a cop that gets shot in the face by Dave Caruso in the opening minutes. If you haven't heard of this movie and if your a Nic Cage fan watch this movie you won't be disappointed and you can't beat the price.

3 out of 5 stars Who's afraid of Nicolas Cage?.......2000-06-15

All right, so he's not the most convincing goon. It's still amusing to see him in this role. I'd say these nay-sayers need to lighten up. As a poor country boy unfamiliar with the urban crime cliches and plot twists, I can honestly say I enjoyed this movie. No, it's no masterpiece, but it is entertaining enough to be worth seeing, even buying at such a reasonable price. Caruso and (as they all admit) a fine supporting cast do very well with a now conventional plot that is at least not as droll as they say. This is probably the first time I've rated something higher than others. Strange.

5 out of 5 stars Film Noir Boxed Set.......2007-03-28

I have watched about half of these movies & so far all of them have been very good, in fact, much better than I expected. I find Dana Andrews to be a very compelling leading man & the actresses in all of these are superb as well. I hope Fox will resolve their issues with "Boomerang" which is #16 in the set, (which is not included with your purchase) so that I can add this one to the collection. My only complaint is that this collection is not really a boxed set. It is simply 17 great film noir DVD's shrink-wrapped together. However, this is a great value & lots of these titles are being released for the first time in this set. Highly recommended for those who like the genre.

4 out of 5 stars remember...no 16 Boomerang is still missing.......2007-03-18

This set misses out no.16 "Boomerang". It got recalled at the eleventh hour by Fox because of a legal tangle.
You can find it on sale for $45.00 on amazon marketplace, because it was actually printed and ready to go.
Clearly a few boxes have found their way out the back door!!!!
But despite that wee dissapointment you'll love the rest.
Hopefully Fox will sort out the mess soon..... and then you can plug the gap without having to shell out silly money.

3 out of 5 stars better price (than list) to start your collection, but not the best deal on noir.......2007-03-12

I haven't yet purchased these titles & was just about to, until I checked up on what's included with the current bundle (March 1 2007) that Amazon is offering. As previously mentioned, this is not a box set (misleading description from Amazon), but rather a bundle of the first 17 titles in Fox's noir series. I purchased the Warner Bros.' boxes 1-3 (and reviewed them there) which I thought were an excellent value for the money (when on sale, roughly 6 - 7$ per disc). I've held off on these since the price is higher. This bundle discounts the titles to about $8 per disc, which is better than the usual price for each, but a local retailer often sells these titles for 7.50 - 10.00 (with a buy 3 get 1 free sale). Still I would have jumped on this price had this been a bonafide box set with the slimmer DVD cases, but these regular dvd's will take up quite a bit of real estate in my storage. Moreover, the more recent titles aren't included (missing titles: Boomerang, 14 Hours, Shock, Vicki, all released last year). If Fox would release all the titles to date (plus the next releases: Hangover Square & The Lodger) in slim cases & a box at a comparable price I'll jump, otherwise I'm holding out for a better deal.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Forget This One Too................2006-03-05

For some reason the Fox Noir release Dark Corner (Mark Stevens, Lucille Ball, Clifton Webb, William Bendix) doesn't get much coverage under the typical outlets for obtaining these Fox Noir titles, Amazon included. I didn't even know the title was even out there, but it is, and it is quite a Noir gem. I say this without hesitation because I was never a Lucy fan at all. But in this one, she's actually pretty cool. Too bad she went goofy in later life (I guess it paid the bills).
If you like the Fox Noir series and Noir in general, don't forget this one too. I got mine from Tower Records (seems hard to find for some reason). The famous "peering through the venetian blinds" scene that you see stills of all the time, that's Mark Stevens. A somewhat overlooked actor in Noir circuit, but he can hold up to any of the other more noted ones in my opinion. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable series for aficionados of film noir.......2006-01-10

The Fox film noir collection is an "Amazon.com exclusive" consisting of 9 DVDS in their individual cases (alas including individual shrink wrap, which one tediously has to remove) presented in one blister pack. The nine titles are:
*** BATCH 1 (DVDs released 3/05): Call Northside 777 (1948); Laura (1944); Panic in the streets (1950)
*** BATCH 2 (DVDs released 6/05): House of bamboo (1955); Nightmare alley (1947); Street with no name (1948)
*** BATCH 3 (DVDs released 9/05): House on 92nd Street (1945); Somewhere in the night (1946); Whirlpool (1949)

The film restorations are superbly done. The DVD cases are in uniform format, being part of the "Fox film noir" series. Each title has a film commentary (Laura has two) plus other extras, minimally a trailer. In addition, each title has a 4-page booklet with these sections: "the lineup," "the look," "the scoop," "the story," and "scene selection."

The DVDs list for $14.95 each and currently Amazon sells them for around $10 each. Amazon sells the 9-DVD collection for $74.99, which works out to $8.33 for each DVD. Certainly, not all titles are of the caliber of Laura (1944), but this collection is a must-have for the firm-noir aficionado.

Incidentally, BATCH 4, was released 12/05 and consists of: The dark corner (1946); Kiss of death (1947); Where the sidewalk ends (1950). BATCH 5 will be released in 3/06: Fallen angel (1945); House on Telegraph Hill (1951); No way out (1950)

Alain Silver & Elizabeth Ward's "Film noir: An encyclopedic reference to the American style" (1992, 3rd ed.) lists 32 noir titles by Fox. Hence we can probably expect from Fox another 20 or so titles in the "Fox film noir" series. If these 32ish titles all materialize in this excellent series, it will be a big chunk both out of one's purse and DVD shelf space.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST "SNOW WHITE" EVER: PRAISE DUVALL, NOT DISNEY!!.......2007-07-03

God bless Shelley Duvall for offering an alternative to, and saving our treasured fairy tales from, the violating clutches of Walt Disney! Duvall's outstanding "Faerie Tale Theatre", along with the admirable Cannon Movie Tales series, proves that the Disney Version IS NOT THE ONLY version of classic stories worth viewing. One reviewer exspressed disappointment that this "SNOW WHITE" does not have the Seven Dwarfs singing "Heigh-Ho" or a singing, soprano, air-head Snow White. Well, if you want the Disney versions, the Disney versions are still around. I like my fairy tales presented with live actors, more depth, humor, and fidelity to the original stories. For all this, I can't praise Shelley Duvall enough. This "SNOW WHITE", along with the Cannon Movie Tales version, is the best ever. It easily leaves Disney in the dust! You get the story without the unnecessary slapstick touches from Disney, and without the sappy songs. The musical underscoring in this version is quite lovely. Directed by Peter Medak from a teleplay by Robert C. Jones.
Don't mess with Vanessa Redgrave as the Evil Queen here. Redgrave certainly does not treat the material as "kiddie stuff" here. In fact, she offers one of the finest performances of her illustrious career. Casting Vincent Price as her Magic Mirror was a stroke of sheer genius. The interplay between Redgrave and Price is perfectly priceless. Elizabeth McGovern is perfectly lovely as Snow White. Rex Smith makes a very handsome and sexy prince. Lou Carry, Tony Cox, Billy Curtis, Phil Fondacaro, Daniel Frishman, Peter Risch, and Kevin Thompson star as the Seven Dwarfs, who, in this version, all have names that begin with the letter "B." The Dwarfs are very humorous and funny. One of the Dwarfs refers to Snow White as "my favorite big person."
The underlying themes of the values that make a person truly beautiful, inside and out, and the values of true, real friendship, are strongly conveyed in this production.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and entertaining.......2007-02-02

Great series for adults as well. Our grandkids had a lot of giggles watching this.

    2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2006-06-11

I agree Elizabeth McGovern was a suitable Snow White, but the story is so different from the Disney version that it should not be called Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The wicked queen certainly did not look like a wicked witch. Very poor casting. The dwarfs were ill-mannered and contentious, and we missed not hearing "Hi, Ho". In other words, we were very disappointed in this version.

4 out of 5 stars A sucessful blend of comedy and traditional fancy.......2006-02-20

With her lips as red as rubies, hair black as ebony, and skin as white as snow, our heroine Princess Snow White (Elizabeth McGovern) is the most beautiful in the land. This is much a curse as blessing, and earns her the muderous jealousy of her stepmother, (Vanesa Redgrave) the queen of the land, and the former most beautiful in all the land. Fortunately for Snow White, she has the loyalty of seven drarfs who take her in, but ultimately cannot protect her from the queen's scheme to see her lovely, innocent stepdaughter dead. Can the love of a handsome prince save our innocent Snow White from a premature death?

Ms. Redgrave is perfect in this role. Unlike some versions, she's lovely enough to convince us she could be a runner-up in the beauty department. She's brings the humor to her wicknedness, and her scenes in front of the witty, longer-suffering mirror, (Vincent Price) had me in stitches. Ms. McGovern brings Snow White's innocence/naivete to the forefront, and looks pretty. Alas, not much is needed for this character. The real female with meat to sink her teeth into is the queen.

The dwarfs are an endearing bunch, always good for additional laugh. The stand out performance is by Tony Cox who plays Bubba. The prince fell a little flat with me. There was zero chemistry between him and his leading lady, but thankfully, there are only about five minutes of the movie left by the time they meet, so it doesn't do too much damage.

I reccomend this for the young, and the young at heart.

5 out of 5 stars THE KISS IS SEXY AND SCARY 80's MOVIE!!!!!!!!.......2005-06-24

The Kiss is a sexy and scary 80's horror movie that was awesome back then and awesome now!!!!!! It has a wonderful cast and the story was basic which i like!!!!!! Its about this aunt that lives with her niece in New York only to give her this curse which you have to kiss the person to take the curse!!!! What more can i say about this movie is that it had style and even though its a little cheesy i would watch it again and again!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars another bad movie.......2005-04-04

This is another fine example of a cheesy 80's movie. It make you wonder why anyone would even bother to make a movie if they don't want to put the time and effort into making a half way decent film. What is truly sad is the story could have been good, but the people making the movie seemed to just want to hurry up and make a movie just for the sake of making one. And had no one of 1988 heard of eyebrow waxing? The mass of unsightly hair on almost every actor and actress was by FAR the scariest thing in this film.

    3 out of 5 stars good thriller.........2002-09-03

When I first saw it , it was scary, I liked the scene where the daughter get's brave and takes on the scary aunt..this movie is hard to find..Can't find it in the video stores.

3 out of 5 stars Seemed a bit boring on tv.......2000-05-17

I've only seen the MONSTERVISION version on tv. I want the R version so I can see the scene where the blonde girl gets ripped up in the escolater.
