A Searcher's Opinion.......2007-02-16
This CD offers many colorfull visualiztions for a wide variety of ailments. The visualizations are a support to those who may have trouble with visualization therapy. I liked the easy sequence of events and bright colors. These are great for those trying to help themselves, but less of aid trying to heal others. Still a great work.

Customer Reviews:
Hoping the DVDs get better.......2007-07-05
I'm open but so far the DVDs don't have a lot "meat" to them. Steve Murray is a very good, clear narrator/speaker and has great presence. There is a good amount of recycled material in the DVD. I would have felt better paying about $10 for each DVD I purchased. I'm going to try a couple more and get myself inline with what should be coming through.
Steve Murray's Reiki products.......2007-06-11
As someone that received Steve Murray's Reiki 1st Level, 2nd Level and Master Attunements and also Psychic and Healing attunements and read the Reiki The Ultimate Guide (3 volumes, really looking forward to the forth one that is coming in July this year) and Reiki False Beliefs Exposed For All I want to express my deep gratitude to the author and tell that Steve Murray's work is superb. The author shares Reiki with the world in an honest, simple and understandable way and you can feel that his intent is genuine. After attunements I always felt an inner shift occurring, felt like each time my energy vibrations were lifted to a higher level that left me with a feeling of inner calm and at the same time inner strength. I like Steve words at the beginning of each attunement "I believe at this very moment our energies are connected in the now". These are not just words, it is something that really happens in time of attunements, it is very real. Before attunements Steve Murray gives detailed instructions on how to prepare yourself for the attunements, what to expect during and after attunements, which position you need to hold your hands. All the smallest questions that you might have about attunement are covered. The same is with Steve Murray's books. They are extremely clearly written guides, (step by step, with photographs) how to give Reiki 1st, 2nd , Master, Healing and Psychic attunements (volume 1), how to perform Healing Attunement with Chakras to help heal a specific physical ailment or disease (volume 2) and how to perform Aura Healing Attunement for specific mental and emotional issues (volume 3). Reiki False Beliefs exposed for All has all answers that you can imagine about Reiki in easy to understand question - answer form. Quoting Buddha (volume1), Rumi (volume 2), Confucius (volume 3) and Lao Tzu (Reiki False Beliefs...) in the beginning of each chapter is also a very nice and inspirational touch. You will get the wealth of information about Reiki symbols and their use in everyday life, about charkas and meridians, about aura and its layers, how to sense, see and protect it, what its colors mean, how to prepare and protect yourself from physic debris during healing session etc.
Reading Steve Murray's books makes you feel light and uplifted versus scared and limited since Steve always recommends to take from his teaching what resonates with you and leave what does not.
I truly believe that taking Steve Murray's Reiki Attunements and studying his books from cover to cover will give you enough knowledge and confidence to be a Reiki healer to heal others and yourself . Those are the only complete sources you need to learn Reiki. Buy and study his products, you will not be disappointed.
Disappointed.......2007-05-17
I had already done some reserach on Reiki, online and in books. I read all of the wonderful reviews of this DVD and ordered it. I found a quiet place, sat down and watched the DVD, expecting to receive the attunement. I felt nothing, except my feet fell asleep from sitting on the floor. I reserved judgement, knowing that Steve said that you might not feel anything (but also listed all of the impressive things you would PROBABLY feel). I gave myself Reiki. I felt nothing... nada. I could feel no evidence of this amazing energy flowing through me. I gave Reiki to my husband, who said it was relaxing, but he didn't feel any "energy" and I felt nothing while I was giving it.. no sense that any "energy" was moving through my hands.
I watched the attunement the next day, in a quiet meditation room, alone, with great intent. I felt nothing. I still gave myself Reiki, but never felt anything. I gave my husband another treatment. He didn't feel anything either.
I have signed up for a Reiki class. Maybe I just need to get the attunement in person. Either that, or the statements I have read over and over that you don't even need to believe in Reiki for it to work, it will just "flow" out of your hands automatically when you get an attunement, and it will "change your life" are all just a bunch of hooey.
I prefer to believe that I just need the class.
Maybe I'll watch the DVD again later after I get an attunement in person and find that it really does do something, I don't know.
Pure, powerful attunement.......2007-05-14
I have read four of Steve's books and used his DVD series for attunements. (These were in addition to previous attunements [by other people] that I had experienced "in person".) My strong feeling is that Steve's video attunement was purer than my prior in-person attunements. There was no hidden agenda and no personal dynamics playing into the attunement. His intention is clear - to share Reiki energy and attunements with all who wish to have them. A major difference for me in receiving the Reiki attunements in this manner is that I, as the one seeking attunement, had to choose to completely own the energy & responsiblity that comes with an attunement. With my face-to-face attunments, I could let the Master do her thing, and she is the one who said, "you are ready". With Steve's attunement, I had to be introspective and explore my own beliefs and get to the point of self-empowerment where I was the one who could say, "I am really ready".
Steve's Reiki guides are all packed with readily usable information - and for those of us who are visual learners, he has photographs for every step of Reiki treatments, attunements, symbols...for whatever the topic of his book is. A bonus is that there is a quote from a wise person preceeding each chapter - Rumi, Buddha, Confucius, etc.
In addition to the valuable written/video resources, I have found Steve to be accessible (via email/phone) and a person of integrity (he refunded my overpayment on PayPal without me asking).
I highly recommend his books & DVDs for those new to Reiki, and to those who have Reiki experience - this is great tangible, clear, complete reference material.

Description
John of God, an ordinary man with an astonishing gift as a psychic medium, does extraordinary spiritual healing. This documentary is the insider's view of John of God's work narrated by a woman he recognizes as a "daughter of the House"and produced by an award-winning documentary filmmaker. Since 1960 John of God has been helping people who come to him in Brazil to heal from AIDS, cancer, and every kind of emotional and/or physical disorder----all at no charge. People come from all over the world to consult with him. The vast majority have profound spiritual experiences. Some receive their healing through meditation and prayer, others through psychic or etheric surgery-a small percent choose a physical intervention. Those having physical surgeries do not experience pain, and there is little bleeding. Numbers of physicians have studied John's work, and reported on its authenticity. "For thousands of years the priesthood held and carried the Way. It is now time to share the ancient mystical knowledge, so that everyone may benefit." - Native American Elders John of God shares his knowledge through the healing protocols at his center: drinking blessed water, eating blessed soup, purifying oneself in a sacred waterfall, receiving energy through crystals, sharing fraternity in community, meditating and praying. Although John incorporates and channels spirits, he does not call himself a shaman-nor does he say he's Spiritist or Catholic. He says, "My mission is to respect God". His message is ecumenical, and he generously extends himself to everyone who comes to him: all races, all cultures and all religions, rich and poor. The relationship between spirituality and wellness is made clear. The importance of addressing possession and exorcism is illuminated. Viewers experience what happens when you consult John of God at his center in Brazil, the Casa de Dom In_cio. Narrator: Emma Bragdon, PhD. (psychology) has been deeply engaged with ancient spiritual practices for 40 years. She has been researching metaphysics in Brazil since 2001. She is the author of two books, "Spiritual Alliances," about John of God, and "Kardec's Spiritism", about spiritualist centers in Brazil, as well as a guide for people seeking healing from John of God. Laurance Rockefeller provided the seed money for this film project. 50% of the proceeds from sale are being donated to the Casa de Dom In_cio to maintain its healing sanctuary. Beyond Physical Medicine.......2006-12-23
It's difficult to continue to be skeptical about the healing abilities of the Brazilian known as John of God after watching this video. There is simply too much sincerity and too much commitment evident in the testimonies of educated, intelligent, and otherwise credible people who have experienced or witnessed his gift of healing through psychic energy.
"I have come to the realization that there are beings in the next dimension - call them what you will - but there are beings who help mankind who are so compassionate that they actively assist people who have the gift of mediumship to direct energy into what is known as the etheric body, which is then reflected into the physical body and thus healing takes place," Johann Grobler, M.D. explains, adding that it is important to recognize that we are multi-dimensional beings.
Narrator Emma Bragdon, Ph.D. explains that John of God enters an altered state of consciousness and then channels various spirit entities, who do the healing. One of them is St. Ignatius Loyola. Occasionally, St. Francis of Assisi comes through, but most of the entities are names not known to the general public. John of God is interviewed and gives all the credit to "the good spirits." He says that St. Rita Cascia appeared to him at age nine "in a cloud" and gave him advance notice of a disaster about to happen in his village. He has been the vehicle for healing by the spirits for more than 40 years.
The video shows people from many countries gathering at the serene settings of the Casa de Dom Inacio and going through the healing experience. Matthew Ireland talks about being cured of an inoperable brain tumor. Diana Cortez, who overcame an eye disorder, says that she could feel entities all around her. Dorothy Cooke, a clairvoyant medium who assists at the Casa, states that she can see spiritual beings sitting in the room as the healing takes place.
I don't need to see it with my own eyes to believe it. The eyes of the people interviewed said it for me. John of God is for real.
This film presents the essence of John of God and the Casa.......2006-10-19
The producers did an excellent job presenting John of God and the Casa de Dom Inacio (John of God's sanctuary in Brazil). So many of the other videos available concentrate on the more sensational aspects of the Casa -- namely, the visible surgeries -- and miss the bigger picture of what is really going on there: spiritual healing and all that implies. And this film is the only one that addresses the very important subject of obsession by negative entities, which I thought the narrator explained very clearly to Western viewers.
This film also does a very good job of explaining the basics of the Casa to those not familiar with it. The addition of a just a little extra information would make this the perfect comprehensive introduction to the Casa -- just a minute or two more about the visible surgeries (the forms they commonly take, the fact that there is little or no pain and no infection) and also a little more about the invisible surgeries (the fact that sometimes when people go home their doctors find internal stitches, that people need at least 24 hours to physically recuperate from these surgeries which demonstrates the physical reality of these invisible procedures, etc.). The choice of music was great throughout the film and set the right tone.
I especially liked the footage of Dorothy Cooke, whom I was privileged to meet at the Casa. I was pleased that one of the hiden treasures of the Casa got this attention. Everything she said about the Casa and about spiritual life was expressed so clearly, straightforwardly, and with the strength of personal realization.
Homecoming.......2006-10-19
This tribute to John of God is beautiful beyond words. The loving spirit of the Casa de Dom Inacio swept through me as the viewer, just as it did the first time I saw John of God. If it is possible to have captured the energy of a place and translate it into something a person can feel personally and viscerally, you have surely done that. I wept for joy - the film was like coming home. I love that it conveys John's message so clearly - that it is indeed God who heals, and that he heals through the giving of a community. I love that it offers a simple education of what really occurs in the human energy field when spiritual healing is taking place, and the nature of unseen entities in a way that is easily understood and accepted. More than anything, I love how clearly you have conveyed our human potential to be loving and whole independent of our circumstances; that we are indeed infinite. I am certain that this film is being held in the loving embrace of all those seen and unseen who make up the Casa de Dom Inacio.

Excellent, thoughtful film about death and power.......2006-11-28
In this 1960 black-and-white film, a poor Mexican woodcutter named Macario - tired of being hungry every day - swears to his wife that he won't eat again until he can eat an entire turkey by himself. His wife obtains a turkey through exceptional effort, Macario travels to the wilderness to eat it, and is then met by a devil, an angel, and death himself. The rest of the film hinges on the results of those encounters. The plot of the movie is entirely captivating. The portrayals of extreme inequality, with indications of beliefs about how those translate into the afterlife, are intriguing, as well as the image of death and how his power is governed. After watching, my wife and I discussed at length the implications of Macario's choices, the foil between him and his wife, and the uses of power.
This film was Mexican film to be nominated for the Academy Award of Best Film in a Foreign Language (it lost to Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring). Next year, on the Day of the Dead (which is when the film takes place), I hope to hold a viewing of Macario.
The DVD is basic but fine. The audiotrack is in the original Spanish, and it has subtitles in English and Spanish. It also has a page with mini bios of the major actors in the film.
Outstanding mexican film!.......2005-10-12
Sunk in the deepest of the miseries, a countryman decides to pact with God and the Devil, with the only condition of get some food for his hungry and impoverished family, though finally he makes a deal with the Death.
This story may well considered a syncretism of several transited roads, but the script enriches notably adding elements of the Mexican folklore. In this sense the film is brilliant because reminding Northrop Frye in Fearful Symmetry, "There are two kind of Cosmology: the designed to understand the world by itself, and those that intends to transform it in the form of the human desire"...The First one is speculative, or intellectual narcissism; but the second is in last instance the supreme goal of the Art, and this film bets for the second choice.
Ignacio Lopez Tarso is sublime in this role. Nominated as Best Foreign Film in 1960.
Bravo for this DVD!.......2004-06-07
Regarding the film, this is an old Mexican classic released in 1960, a little bit after the Golden era of Mexican cinema, from director Roberto Gavald?n, who also did Flor de Mayo starring American Jack Palance (who performed in Spanish!). For an American viewer, I would say this film is sort of a Mexican It's A Wonderful Life, only you would watch it every Day of the Dead instead of Christmas. Its a good film, with touches of surrealism and good old fashion morality (a la Capra), but definitely lacks the shine of earlier Epoca Dorada films. It shows a slight taint of fifties cornyism as well as the influence of the new medium of television. But by all means I don't want to sour you on this film. The cinematography is done by the famed Gabriel Figueroa, and he gets an occasional chance to shine. If you haven't seen it, you should definitely check it out, especially if you have an interest in M?xico or D?a de los Muertos.
Regarding the DVD, I can only say WOW! This is part of the new apparently Televisa-backed Vive M?xico collection, and the production is first rate. The image quality is top notch, it has marvelous trailers for other films in the collection including Ahi Est? El Detalle (comedian Cantiflas' most revered film) and El Rapto (an Emilio Fernandez flic with Jorge Negrete and Maria Feliz), and it also has English and Spanish subtitles, which have been lacking on other recent DVDs. I see that a number of rare classics like Maria Candelaria, Dona Barbara, Bugambilia, La Perla, Salon Mexico, & Los Olvidados have already been released south of the border in this collection, let's hope somebody gets smart and starts selling those up here sooner rather than later. Otherwise I'll have to take a trip down to Tijuana just to buy some DVDs!

Any connection to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic horror tale is tenuous at best in this action-packed superhero story with dark undertones. Adam Baldwin is San Francisco surgeon Henry Jekyll, whose honeymoon in Hong Kong becomes a nightmare when a triad gang murders his wife and marks him for death. Saved by a mysterious Chinese healer who speaks in fortune cookie clichés, he becomes a kind of hero-in-training (think The Karate Kid and Mr. Miyagi) with a mystic twist: he discovers the herbal formula to release his inner brute and transforms into a demonic-looking Hyde. The colorful mix of cop show, gangster thriller, and mystic martial arts adventure ends on an anticlimactic note, as if this made-for-TV feature was the pilot for a never-launched TV series, but it's an energetic and spirited film that, for all its kooky clichés, remains oddly compelling. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
Doc Jekyl and Kung-Fu Hyde.......2006-02-19
This is the loosest adaptation of anything I've ever seen. In fact, loose doesn't even begin to describe it. What Sci-Fi has done is taken the title of the Robert Louis Stevenson's novella in order to draw viewers in, and nothing else.
The TV movie follows Dr. Henry Jekyll, now a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. The entire supporting cast of Stevenson's story, even in name, is nonexistent. Jekyll travels to China with his new bride for a honeymoon. There he encounters Chinese mobsters who maim the doctor, kill his wife, and leave him for revenge.
Up to this point, the movie had potential. An action-adventure vigilante retelling of "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" might have been worth seeing. Unfortunately, the movie never even tries to live up to its source material. Dr. Jekyll apprentices himself to a local medicine man and studies martial arts under the name "Edward Hyde." It looks like Sci-Fi had to throw both of those names in there somewhere in order to keep the title. Eventually, in the final third of the movie, Dr. Jekyll does make a medicine that gives him glowing eyes, sharp teeth, and a killer edge. But Stevenson's theme of the struggle between good and evil inside of every man is unexplored. If Sci-Fi was going to take the title, they should have at the very least tried to stay true to the theme. Under the influence of the medicine, Dr. Jekyll is aware, even more aware, of what he is doing. Mr. Hyde is all alias, no altar ego.
The acting performances are solid, but the movie is hard to enjoy when it begs to be compared to its classic source material. Before the halfway point of the movie, the "Based on the book by Robert Louis Stevenson" in the credits seems like a bold-faced lie. If you enjoy American-in-China-karate-action movies, and you have nothing better to watch, try this on for size. If you're looking for an adaptation of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", avoid this, or you'll be sorely disappointed.
By the way, the recent "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" was a better Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde action movie.
underrated action film.......2006-02-17
Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde was a pleasant surprise. We thought it would be the usual kung foo action film, instead found it to be full of gentle humor, Chinese medicine, and interesting characters. Adam Baldwin(Dr. Jekyll) and Chang Tseng(Dr. Chau) relate extremely well to each other and have a unique student-teacher relationship. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie.
Adam Baldwin.......2005-11-24
He makes me swoon... and I was surprised to see him in something not half bad. The lack of resolution makes me wish it had been fleshed out into a series, but still overall enjoyable.
Um..........2005-10-27
Quick thing to the last reviewer. Adam can't do his brothers proud- HE'S NOT A BALDWIN BROTHER. Take it from someone who carpools with his kids, that mistake ticks him off
NICE TRY BUT DISAPPOINTING RESOLUTION.......2005-10-06
Francis Ford Coppola executive produced this film for his Zoetrope studios, and it must have been a pilot for a failed tv series, as it has no real resolution. Giving the classic story a new twist, it has nothing to do with its classic source, but instead is almost a transcendtalized superhero movie with a buff and surprisingly effective Adam Baldwin inhabiting the dual roles. Full of mystic mumbojumbo and some fairly well staged karate fights, this version gives us the dual-faced doctor as a vengeful fellow out to avenge the brutal murder of his bride on their honeymoon in Hong Kong. Baldwin teams up with a Chinese fairy godfather and learns the ins and outs of herbal medicine in his attempts to bring down the bad guys. Not bad but since we don't get a resolution, one feels a little cheated.

STRONG LOOK AT LINK BETWEEN SEXUALITY AND SPIRITUALITY.......2006-06-23
The film THE HEALER (a.k.a. "Julie Walking Home") poses the kind of unsettling metaphysical questions that many prefer to avoid asking. At the same time, it suggests some intriguing answers. Like the film THE CRIME OF PADRE AMARO (please see companion review) the movie "The Healer" is a study of the degrees to which human beings can enjoy the gift of human sexuality while simultaneously attempting to serve as channels for spiritual healing, social harmony, and political integrity. That Alexei--played flawlessly by Lothaire Bluteau--is a true and gifted spiritual healer becomes clear from the outset. We witness him as a child in a hospital where doctors discover that standing him on the back of an ailing patient relieves the patient's pain. Moreover, his very presence apparently has a healing impact on every patient in the ward. As an adult, Alexei becomes famous as a healer who shares his gifts freely with the world. But like the proverbial prophet without honor in his own hometown, he has to endure the complaints of an aging mother who points out that not only is his spiritual generosity towards the world doing nothing to alleviate her financial distress but it is perhaps not the best way to prepare for his own latter years.
Much of "The Healer" actually centers around the rift that occurs in the life of the Makowskys, a Canadian family whose happiness is torn asunder when the husband--played with superb complexity by William Fichtner--has an affair, and the young son develops cancer. Is the child's disease a physical manifestation of the family's spiritual dis-ease following the father's adultery? Good question to ponder.
In her desperation to save their son, the mother--exemplary work here by Miranda Otto--seeks out the assistance of the healer Alexei. From their very first meeting, the attraction between them is clearly both spiritual and sexual. The child is indeed healed and all returns uneasily to their separate lives. Then Alexei visits the mother and the two have an affair. Their sexual union seems to rob the healer of his ability to help the little boy when his cancer returns. However, ironically, it also results in a pregnancy. Is this a bad thing or a good thing for the family and the healer? Pay close attention to the end and see what you think.

Unresolved.......2005-09-03
There is some really good acting by all the cast which is why it deserved the two stars. As another reviewer stated, the plot threads are left unresolved and the ending seemed kind of like someone said, "ok, here's the two hour mark. Wrap it up." I did like that they were starting to explore the issue of religious and spiritual beliefs, but they dropped it pretty quickly. How does the healing of her child effect the mother's own spiritual belief system? Dunno. It was like, kid healed, end of story.(not end of movie--I didn't spoil the ending). Mother has affair with healer and then poof, he's gone. Why? Where'd he go? What's he up to now? How did this affair effect him after he went back to his country? Dunno.
The script needed some healing.

This is an OUTSTANDING DRAMA, If you dont believe in miracles
then you dont want to see this movie., because its truly
alot of miracles by one man. who was blessed with the ability
to be a HEALER ,God bless the people in Poland. Where some of this movie was produced.Academy award director Agnieszka Holland
Miranda Otto shines in this one until the script bogs down.......2005-03-09
"The Healer" is the Australian television name for an independent film (a joint Canadian-Polish production) that was originally entitled "Julie Walking Home." Knowing both titles for this 2002 film, and the interesting combination of nations the production represents, is key because it really is two different movies thrown together with some degree of success. I checked it out because I wanted to see Miranda Otto in it (big Éowyn fan) and knew absolutely nothing about it (my assumption was that she would be the title character since her face is the only one on the cover, but that proves not to be the case).
After the prologue in which we since the healer first being a healer, "Julie Walking Home" would describe the first act of this film from director Agnieszka Holland ("Washington Square"). Julie Makowsky (Miranda Otto) comes home early from a trip with her eight-year-old twins, Nick (Ryan Smith) and Nicole (Bianca Crudo), and gets an unpleasant surprise from her husband, Henry (Willaim Fichtner). Her response is to take the kids and leave immediately, but they are in the back of the car screaming about daddy running after them and one of the twins gets out. As far as Julie is concerned her marriage is over and I was intrigued by the notion of a pair of twins, who are closer than most twins, torn apart by a divorce. But that is not with this film is about because before the family can break apart one of the twins gets sick.
The doctors say there is no hope and from a most unexpected source Julie hears about Alexei the healer (Lothair Bluteau), a Russian who is laying hands on the sick and dying in Poland. So she packs up her dying child over her husband's objections and heads to Europe. Once there, Alexei picks her out of the crowd and puts his hands on her child. "The Healer" second act of this film is potentially interesting: you find yourself wondering what happened to Alexei over the years between the boy we saw in the prologue and the man he is now. But the focus of the movie suddenly shifts to the attraction between Alexei and Julie and suddenly this film is a romance.
Now we have a third movie, which, again, is potentially interesting. Julie has already proven she will do anything to save her child, so what must she think about Alexei's attention? Throw into this the fact that Julie is on the rebound from her marriage and has been critical of religion, and the complex emotions with which she is dealing seem rather overwhelming. Indeed, Otto's performance is the centerpiece of this film, but the script, by Holland along with Roman Gren and Arlene Sarner puts her through too much in the last act. When Julie makes love to Alexei it is hard to tell if she is really in love or just extremely grateful. Those who check out "The Healer" because of Otto will not be disappointed by her performance, but they will feel unsatisfied by how all the plot threads are resolved in by the finish. There are the bits and pieces of a couple of good films here, but the mix does not match.
Don't waste your money!.......2005-03-03
Give this one a miss. It was terrible. It had no point at all. I'm a huge fan of the LOTR Trilogy, so I figured I'd give it a shot since Miranda Otto (who plays Eowyn in LOTR) was in it. What a waste of time! The person who said they want those "113 minutes of their life back" is dead right.
Sure, it may be realistic in the beginning, but this is a prime example of one of the things that drives me crazy about indy movies. They get too pretentious when they try to be so character driven, and spend too much time giving us information we really don't need to know.
It could have been much more magical, but it gives us a boring ending--not to mention it drags on for ages before anything happens. The cast itself was really blah. Eowyn (hehe) is good, playing the sympathic mother role. But after that, well. That's about it. If you have to see it, rent it before you buy it. It's definitely not worth the cost of purchasing it new.

Customer Reviews:
Gary Cole: A Great Actor in a Great Film.......2006-08-13
When one lists some of the top actors in Hollywood today, the name of Gary Cole does not come to mind. Gary Cole is an actor that has proven himself time and time again. Cole is most famous for his dead-on portrayal of Mike Brady in the "The Brady Bunch" movies that appeared in the 1990s. Many feel that Cole nailed the Mike Brady role as good as the late Robert Reed. Even the lame sequel entitled "The Brady Bunch in the White House", had its one bright spot in Gary Cole. Cole has done other roles too. Recently he played Cotton McKnight, a broadcaster in "Dodgeball - A True Underdog Story" and once again nailed the part of playing a caricature of a straight-laced announcer. My exposure to Cole seemed to be in this caricature-type roles. When I discovered the independent film "Santa Fe", I discovered a whole new side to Gary Cole - a dramatic one (although he still shows his comedic side in parts of the film). However this time, Cole is given a very good script and as a result delivers a top-notch performance in what I feel is one of the better independent films of the last ten years.
In "Santa Fe", Cole plays Paul Thomas. Thomas plays a Santa Fe police officer who has an an obsessive interest in cults. At the start of the movie we learn that Thomas, his wife Lea (played by Sheila Kelley) and daughter Crystal (played by Tina Majorino) have escaped from a cult that became way too over the line (dangerous). Thomas had helped Lea and Crystal escape, but was wounded himself by gunfire as he tried to escape. A mass killing occurred at the cult and Thomas was the lone survivor. During his time in rehabilitation, his life changed. He was suspended from the police force, his wife Lea left him for a New Age Chiropractor named Dan Yates (played brilliantly by Jere Burns), and most importantly he realized he had an addiction to these cult-like organizations. Upon returning to Santa Fe, Thomas tries to get his life in order. This includes rebuilding his relationship with daughter Crystal and getting back on the police force. With some help from his City Councilwoman sister Nancy (played by Pamela Reed), Thomas is reinstated and although he is assigned to a menial desk job, he seeks to go after many of Santa Fe's "charlatan-like" characters who he feels are cult-like figures. This hits home immediately when Dan and Lea get Crystal involved with a New Age guru named Eleanor Braddock (played by Lolita Davidovich). Immediately Thomas suspects that Eleanor is a charlatan and seeks to get her out of his daughter's life. While trying to pry Eleanor out of Crystal's life, he begins to get close to Eleanor and falls for her. The movie begins to unfold as Thomas struggles walking a fine line trying to determine if he really is in love with Eleanor or in love with her ideas. In particular while Thomas begins to struggle with himself - we also see Eleanor doing the same.
The amazing thing is - on top of a very good story and a very good screenplay, we the city of Santa Fe play prominently into the movie. Not only does is the movie filmed on location, but there are many concepts that are prominent in Santa Fe that are also explored. These the concepts include: ethnic tensions (namely with the large Hispanic makeup of the city). gang violence, the idea of Santa Fe being a lightning rod to many of these New Age philosophies, and the concept of Santa Fe being a home to many Hollywood "outsiders". The nice thing is that the screenplay does a terrific job at integrating these concepts into the storyline. Most notably, there is an interesting storyline involving Thomas' sister Nancy trying to unseat the fictional Mayor of Santa Fe in a run-off election. This subplot will play a role in the overall story.
Ultimately, this is going to be Cole's movie from start to finish. The character of Paul Thomas really gives Cole a chance to shine. Cole provides some comedic moments throughout the film - whether it is running into a tree blindfolded or executing his witty sense of humor. At the same time, we see Cole's able to develop his character of Paul Thomas throughout the movie. He is also given a very good female presence in Lolita Davidovich who plays Eleanor There is definite on-screen chemistry between the two.
Another interesting wrinkle to the film is the inclusion of Phyllis Frelich playing Thomas' psychiatrist, Dr. Ginsburg. As a part of his condition to return to the police force, Thomas had to agree to counseling sessions. Dr. Ginsburg is deaf and needs to communicate with Thomas through the use of a translator who understands sign language. For those who aren't familiar with Frelich's work - she is deaf in real life. The use of a deaf character definitely adds a sense of realism to the movie, but also gives it another dimension. Cole isn't the only character who is going to provide comedic relief. It is Frelich's character of Dr. Ginsburg that will provide some humorous moments.
Perhaps the only bad part of the movie is a lame dream sequence involving Paul and Dan Yates in which Paul loses part of his tongue. I thought the scene was pretty bad and not necessary.
I thought the ending of the movie was very good. The ending wasn't predictable and I was very satisfied - even though part of me wanted this movie to go on even longer. The nice thing is the movie will keep you entertained from start to finish. Even though this was an Independent film, I'm very surprised this movie has not garnered more attention than it did. While Cole does a great job in the movie, this movie was terrific top to bottom - highly recommended.
Featuring the city in a starring role.......2005-03-31
From the description, this movie sounds cheesy, but its not. It's a surprisingly enjoyable independent film about one man's obsession. For anyone who has ever been to Santa Fe or plans to, this is the perfect film to watch as you get to see quite a bit of the town. I loved it the two times I visited and am always eager to return. People who've been struck by Santa Fe Fever will undoubtedly laugh at some of the "inside jokes" in this film, which reveals some its quirks and charm, most notably the all encompassing "New Age" spiritual seekers.
Gary Cole plays Paul Thomas, a former cop who left the force when he, along with his wife and daughter, joined a David Koresh-type cult in Wyoming. We see flashbacks of him saving a few lives before getting shot and wounded. When he returns to Santa Fe to pick up where he left off, seeking his old job back, people are naturally suspicious of him. He disappointed some street thugs who really did look forward to their Saturday "midnight basketball" games (did that program really work?). He's required to attend therapy sessions with a deaf woman who communicates quite expressively through sign language and one big reason I love this film. His cop partner finds amusing ways to get him out of a session early.
Lolita Davidovich plays Eleanor in a spot on resemblance of writer Marianne Williamson. Paul thinks Eleanor is just another cult leader, even though his ex-wife and daughter think she's great. She has retreats at her very artsy house and gives lectures, and is often hounded by gushing autograph seekers. What we learn is that she's just communicating what is basic info that everyone should know, and she feels guilty about it. She's not the one who views herself as a guru to be worshipped and admired, and such devotion among fans leads to her breakdown. That's where the film is weakest...because I wanted to see more of her and why people think she's a cult leader. I certainly didn't get that sense (nor do I think Marianne Williamson or Deepak Chopra are cult leaders...they are just writing about basic info and caught the celebrity trend mobile that ultimately makes their message/books cheesy). Paul falls in love with Eleanor and we (the viewers) don't know if its authentic love or groupie love, as it seems more like the latter. The resolution comes about too quickly and I certainly would have liked to have seen more. I got the sense that some scenes were deleted, possibly for time considerations, but with a film like this, I was never bored once, so I could've enjoyed another 30 minutes to get a clearer idea about what this film is ultimately about. Its certainly not what the description makes it out to be and that's a relief. Its not a cheesy film. Its high quality on a low budget, and I recommend seeing it and owning it if you like it. If anything, it makes a nice video souvenir of Santa Fe.
Don't believe the description!.......2003-12-16
This is an extremely smart, clever, funny and surreal movie about holding onto our individuality. It is not an action drama as the description would suggest--instead it is a witty exploration of Santa Fe culture (or Sedona, or Taos, or the like), where people can be willing to give up too much of themselves (and their money) to find enlightenment. The question in the movie is just how rewarding complete individuality can be.
