A deft exploration of what might happen if someone's life took different paths. Ryan (R.T. Lee) is an aspiring screenwriter who's been seeing Joel (Greyson Dayne) for almost three years--and then he meets Leo (Jonathon Roessler) at a party and thinks he may have found his soulmate, a lover who will understand him fully. Drift then follows what would happen if Ryan and Leo fell madly in love, if they just had a fling, and if Leo didn't share Ryan's feelings at all. What makes the movie work is how well realized the characters are; as the different scenarios mark out each turn of fate, their behavior changes but is completely compelling as the actions of the same person. The movie is tightly edited, so that just when it threatens to wallow in relationship drama, it moves forward. Plus, the steamy sex scenes have more heft because of the reality of the emotions portrayed. --Bret Fetzer

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift has all the elements that spelled success for its predecessors: Speed, sex, and minimal dialogue. The plot doesn't need explication; it's a nonsensical series of confrontations and standoffs that serve to get us from one race to another. Tokyo Drift can most accurately be described as a visual poem about screeching tires, crunching fiberglass, and sleek female skin, set to a killer soundtrack of Japanese pop and hip-hop. The actors are only needed for tight close-ups of narrowed eyes or sweaty hands tightly gripping gearshifts, though Sung Kang, Better Luck Tomorrow, stands out as a vaguely philosophical hoodlum with deadpan charisma. The curved bodies of the cars and the luscious flesh of the women are both shot with a fetishistic hunger. The "drift" style of racing--in which the cars are allowed to slide in order to take sharp turns at high speeds--grabs your eyes; there's a strange, spectral beauty to rows of cars sliding sideways down a mountain road at night. Also starring Lucas Black (Friday Night Lights) as our wheel-happy hero; Bow Wow (Roll Bounce) as the scam-artist comic relief; and martial arts legend Sonny Chiba (Kill Bill) as a yakuza big shot. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF ALL THREE!!!.......2007-06-13

Yes, I loved this movie and it more of true style of racing me and my brother are interest in. Yes, I know... the first one is good cuz of Vin Diesel andf Paul Walker. But this is still the best of all 3 F & F series! The ending is awesome and I knew it, I've read that part a long ago before this movie came out in theatres! I enjoying watch this movie, over over over over and don't get tired of it... mmmm, safe to say I've watch this HD-DVD like 7 times and 3 times in theatres. Anyway, the picture and sound are amazing and wicked awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Fun Movie, Great Demo Material.......2007-06-08

Although the movie may be regarded as a mediocre movie by some, let's face the facts here: Tokyo Drift ain't no Schindler's List. It's an all round fun ride and the Drift sport was well translated into this movie. For sports car fanatics, this may well be in one of your collection as the cars are highlighted in a way that they have their own characters and could very well be the actors of this movie. Not to say that the actors are shabby, though. Although there are no Oscar nominated performances here, the cast have chemistry and are entertaining enough to keep you glued to the story, albeit predictable.

As for the disc itself, Tokyo Drift on HD DVD paves the way for future titles to include the U-Control feature as one of a powerful, interactive tool to play with. Tokyo Drift has the Picture in Picture feature, where a 'behind the scenes' featurette plays throughout the movie; Set Pictures; Tech Specs where car characteristics or damage specs pop up during certain scenes; and Storyboards - all at your control. You can bring it up or switch it off whenever you want (only for the PiP. Other features have the option to pop up during certain scenes), without returning to the main menu. Besides the U-Control feature, you also have other staples such as deleted scenes, commentary, etc. There's even a garage mode where you customize (with a limited set of colors and designs) Han's car and actually see it in the "Doughnut" scene from the movie. Pretty useless, but cool nonetheless.

Overall, Tokyo Drift is a fun, fast paced adventure with a predictable storyline (as well as a sweet cameo) and seeing it on HD DVD is a totally new experience. Have a new HD DVD Player and Plasma/LCD? This is what you should play to demo your rig!

2 out of 5 stars Missed Opportunity.......2007-05-28

Like many "Japan Movies" however, this is not a movie about Japan as much as Japan serving as an exotic location against which Westerners have their own adventures. There was a period around the turn of the century when most Western books and movies about Asia were simply exotic backdrops for stories about Europeans, and it appears 100 years later we are not completely out of that era yet.

Not, I hasten to add before I get too high on my liberal horse, that there is anything inherently wrong with that. For that matter, Japanese media often employs the same device, and Japanese comics and movies are often filled with stories of Japanese people going to America and having all sorts of bizarre adventures.

But it is noticeable that none of the main characters in this movie are Japanese. The hero is a white American, the best friend character is a black American, the mentor is a Chinese American, and the love interest is an Australian of indeterminate ethnicity. A multi-cultural cast certainly, but the rest of the Japanese characters are mostly reduced to the background. More is the pity because the producers were able to get a few of Japanese most recognized television talents to make cameos on this film, and then only gave them bit parts.

In fact the only Japanese who figure into this story at all are the villains. I remember thinking the first film in the series, with its Chinese bad guys, was drifting dangerously close to reviving the old stereotype of the swarthy Asian villain. This film again has chosen to focus on a white protagonist battling slimy Asian gangs.

However I am hesitant to call racism too quickly, especially since the director of this film and many of the crew are Asian American themselves. Instead, let us just say that the film has some unfortunate missed opportunities, and it could have been a lot better if it had done a better job of integrating its Japanese cast.

As for my critique of the film's portrayal of Japan:
The entire film is set in Tokyo, which I have thus far spent appalling little time in, despite my 5 years in Japan (mostly due to my hatred of crowds). Tokyo is to some extent almost a separate country, and the rest of Japan views it in much the same way we Midwesterners view California, as that crazy place where anything goes, fashion and youth culture are at their cutting edge, and nobody has any morals.

If you watch the DVD, the director's commentary is pretty interesting, because he talks about some of the things he exaggerated, and some of the things he didn't. (For example, given the fact that Tokyo is one huge traffic Jam, most of these car racing scenes that take place in the movie are pretty laughable).
Also it turns out that, like "Lost in Translation", this film was apparently plagued by Japan's restrictive rules regarding film permits, and a lot of the Tokyo footage they either had to take illegally, or film in L.A. on sets that recreated Tokyo.

The school uniforms, school slippers, and look of the school was all pretty much dead on. However in my experience, a tall white guy cannot walk into a classroom in Japan without causing, if not massive disruption, at least a considerable show of interest and questions. I found it slightly surprising that he could simply walk into the classroom and be accepted as a new student, but then I live out in the countryside in Kyushu. I'm sure Tokyo is a lot more sophisticated and international.

Of course, the big point of this movie is not Japan or the cast, but the cars.
I will say this though, I now have a whole new appreciation for "Crash" by J.G. Ballard. When he I read his book about sexual eroticism and car crashes, I thought he was only being metaphorical about our society's addiction to automobiles. 15 minutes into this movie, I realized that some people, like the target audience for these films, do seem to literally equate huge car crashes with pretty girls and sexual arousal.

5 out of 5 stars Best movie ever!.......2007-05-19

Apart from Edward Scissorhands, this is my favorite movie. I never thought I'd find a better movie than 2 Fast 2 Furious. I didn't expect Bow Wow to be a very good actor, but he proved me wrong - he acted Twinkie's part very well. The acting is all good, but Brian Tee and Sung Kang especially stand out. The drift scenes are really something else - they just get your adrenaline pumping and it doesn't stop!
The best characters were DK and Han - Han was played really well and he was kinda witty, and DK was just soooooo evil!

This movie is the one that got me addicted to action flicks, so you'll be mad if you miss it. This film is the best!

4 out of 5 stars Great Detail but must see it over and over again........2007-06-27

This was a great video for a novice or wanna be drifter (you know who you are..lol), I have been drifting for fun at courses for some time and this video did not teach me much but it did help me tune my techniuqe a little better and to be smoother with my drifts, great info about under powered cars and balance transfer, I feel that his drifts are much easier because of the downhill momentum and what looks like a humid and moist track, also the fact that he is driving a turbo charged car with probably overheated tires from difting so much in one course, you can really hear that bov in the background. He makes the underpowered rwd car slide easier with junkyard tires and weight transfer with some blipping of the throttle. A lot of practice is needed to learn the style from this drifter the way he wants you to, with a great suspension setup and good tires plus a lsd comes in handy for thoes dounuts and a rwd car is of course a lot of fun if you can get one and for that you need a very large track for the errors that most likley will happen like her says. the video is all in dubbed english and no subtitles so it might take a few veiws to actualy get it all in your head. I am happy to have this in my library and for the price it was still well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars cars.......2007-04-11

This is a super fascinating and helpful addition to anyone who's interested in "racing's" collection.

5 out of 5 stars The best bang-for-the-buck drift instruction........2007-03-06

To those who haven't seen this DVD and have or haven't seen any other DVDs from Best Motoring, it should be noted right away that this is not really an entertaining DVD, it is strictly an instructional video. As long as you know that you can't be dissapointed. At $10 this is the best drift instruction you're going to get! Everything is clear, linear, and right to the point. Keiichi Tsuchiya does a great job of demonstrating all of the main drift techniques, on different types of corners, and in all different types of cars (minus front-wheel-drive). They also use a screen-in-screen feature (note: standard for the video, NOT a DVD selectable option) that shows the in-car steering, pedal movements, and (if I'm not confusing it with other BMI videos) the tachometer as well. The one thing that I thought was really thoughtful in the making of this DVD is that they put a brake light on the front of the car so that you can see the braking points and timing from an outside-front view going into a corner. Tsuchiya even gives tips and demonstrates the best path to take as you start drifting such as just starting with low speed 180 degree turns with the parking brake and where to go from there. Normally I would nitpick about how there should be a little bit in here on tuning for different types of cars, but after you see it you realize that it's just meant to be about the driving and at a beginner's level at that. So, I give it 5 stars. It's $10, what have you got to lose?...other than $10.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Drift Viveo!.......2006-07-28

The Drift Bible is a very ecucational video for people that are serious about learning this new sport. And let's face it; it was a blast to watch!
The only negative feedback is that you don't want the video to end!
This vidoe comes with high recommendation!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome! :).......2006-06-10

This was an xmas gift for my boyfriend, but secretly I wanted to see it too, so I used him as the excuse to purchase it ;)

The video was excellent, it goes into a lot of detail on how to perform the slides/drifts and overall it was really fun to watch. I got all excited just watching it, and then immediately after, of course, I wanted to jump in the car and practice, but it's sort of hard to do that on city streets... without attracting cops at least, haha!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not a good example to set.......2007-04-18

I purchased this video as well as several others that focus on the sport of drifting.

This video centers on two things:
1. The driving demonstrations of the Drift Alliance in several locations, including Costa Rica
2. The antics and wild partying of the Drift Alliance members on those locations prior or after the demonstrations

The video is organized by location, and each segment includes both parts above stated (driving video and party video). There are some minor comments from the Drift Alliance members as well.

Video quality varies from place to place. Notably, most of Costa Rica's footage is out of focus. I'd say everything seems to be filmed with a handycam.
Sound quality and volume varies very much between the different segments. Notably, I always cranked up the volume during the comments sections hoping they had something interesting to say, and got startled by the immediately following driving sections that are play along with hard rock music.

So, about the driving:
The Drift Alliance members are highly skilled professional drivers, and they perform great shows in the video. No wonder they have a sponsor such as Falken.
However, there's no instructional value from their drifting as there is practically no talking about the car's set up or techniques they use. There virtually isn't any in-car cameras focusing on pedalwork or the use of e-brakes or weight shifting. Most shots of their driving is from exterior cameras either mounted on the cars or from the spectator's point of view.
Still, it's enjoyable to see the demonstrations if only from a spectator's point of view.

Now about the partying:
It would seem from the video that these guys only do driving and parties. The partying however tends to feature mostly drunk people, people drinking, guys in underwear (drunk), people hitting each other or general bashing.

This is the part that I did not enjoy, and is the part that could set a bad example for younger audiences, as it can be associated to the "cool" drivers that the Drift Alliance are.
Moreover, there is the obvious no-no of doing drinking and then driving. (Remember you can still have the effects of alcohol even one or two days after ingesting it)

If you want to really learn more about drifting and some of the Japanese culture, I'll recommend much more the JDM Option series. There's are funny (some japanese characters behave almost like the cartoons) and fun to watch. And they teach you about the sport and have a lot of in-car footage so you can see how the drivers drive. I personally like the "Drift Like Nomuken" volume.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!.......2006-12-18

Bottom line this is the face of all Drifting DVDS...you wont be disapointed. Pure hard core drifiting....it doesnt get any better than this. Sit back and watch as Drift Alliance takes over the drift scene. Tony, Chris and JR you guys ROCK!!!!!

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Takes some work on your part to like it.......2007-05-02

This movie has some interesting takes on life, love and relationships. It's pretty isolated to just a few characters in L.A. It's boring enough that my partner and I actually were talking back to the characters in order to keep our interest up. There are parts, however, that really make you feel for the characters. They are way too depressed though and it drags this movie down. All the repeating of scenes is also pretty strange and waste of probably a third of the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Do you ever wonder about the other possibilities?.......2006-10-16

I started out watching this film not really impressed at all. I was in fact tempted to shut it off, but I paid for the thing so I was determined to watch it. I'm glad I did. The synopsis of the film is a young gay couple approaching their third anniversary, one still madly in love and the other very confused. Ryan decides to break up with his mate Joel, and explore a relationship with a new friend with whom he shares a lot of things in common. He is in search of someone to share the little magical world that exists only in his mind. But will his new friend feel the same way he does, or will their own little worlds collide? At that moment this was a mediocre film, but then something magical happens. The scenario plays out as if you are watching the end of the movie. All of sudden, as you expect the story to end, the film starts over at the moment Ryan moves out of Joels apartment, and begins going in a totally different direction from what you just seen. I was thinking: "ok, that was a fantasy, now we're seeing what really happens". As it plays out however, it all goes back once again to Ryan leaving Joels apartment and yet another scenario begins to play out as Ryan drifts in thought to explore several fantsies trying to find one that would best explain his real dream in life. As you watch this film, you will surely find one ending you like. All in all, the only thing he discovers is that in any scenario, his lover Joel is steadfast and loves him unconditionally. This is an indie of course so the quality could have been better, but all in all, even on the VHS copy I have, it wasn't too horrible. I would recommend it on DVD however for best picture and sound quality. The casting was great and the acting was superb. I was quite impressed once the whole production began to take off. Don't get in a hurry to shut it off and discount it as a failure. It really does make a strong point and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I will want to see this again and again now that I have some sense of what is going on. Ryan's little world is a really twisted place with a lot of darkness in it. Way too much darkness for me personally, but in the end, it is as if this adult man is finally coming of age so to speak after he has already experienced life. If you give it a chance, you will get something out of this film. I recommend it, but at first I already had my review in mind for only one star. A slow start, but a nice save by Canadian filmmaker Quentin Lee. Two thumbs up in surprise!

      3 out of 5 stars Whoa.......2006-08-08

Don't be so quick to write off this film. If you can get beyond the shortcomings of this very low budget production, there is a story to be told. It is about infatuation and confusion and the evolution of human emotions. Angst, that universal dynamic.

1 out of 5 stars Drifting Asleep .......2006-07-17

Alright - I feel Ratings are Important in order to provide a useful range of opinions - I used to only rate movies that I enjoyed and then I would run across a movie that had a high star rating and buy it thinking it might have some substance (what I failed to realize is only one person had rated the film and it was most likely the Director), that was the case with this film - I'm sorry, but I really had a tough time not drifting asleep while watching it...all the Twilight Zone (trying to be creative) bouncing around in time, the mediocre acting at best and the no budget look of the film just did not inspire me...Sorry!
