Splicing scenes featuring his protagonist, Ivan (John Savage, The Deer Hunter), among excerpted interviews with real soldiers from John Huston's landmark World War II documentary Let There Be Light, director Andrei Konchalovsky brilliantly sets the stage for a morally ambiguous tale of a war hero's return home to a small town. Disappointingly, the opening of Maria's Lovers promises much more than it ultimately delivers. Ivan has survived the tortures of a Japanese POW camp by continually dreaming of his childhood sweetheart Maria (Nastassja Kinski). When he returns to find her with a boyfriend and a grown-up libido, Ivan can't reconcile his guardian vision with the real Maria. Even as she declares her love for him and they hastily marry, Ivan's nightmares intervene. In short, Ivan can't perform. Minor roles for Robert Mitchum and Keith Carradine (as a ridiculous wandering minstrel who seduces Maria after Ivan flees in shame) seem wasted on a melodramatic script that often sounds as if it was poorly translated into English. The nostalgic scenery of Brownsville, Pennsylvania, (rolling fog, river ferries, careening factories) is compelling, as is Kinski (who is at her most seductive and downright breathtaking), but Konchalovsky's affection for his characters and their landscape cannot surpass his stilted vision of America. --Fionn Meade

David Lean focused all his talent as an epic-maker on Boris Pasternak's sweeping novel about a doctor-poet in revolutionary Russia. The results may sometimes veer toward soap opera, especially with the screen frequently filled with adoring close-ups of Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, but Lean's gift for cramming the screen with spectacle is not to be denied. The streets of Moscow, the snowy steppes of Russia, the house in the country taken over by ice; these are re-created with Lean's unerring sense of grandness. The movie is so lush and so long that it becomes an irresistible wallow, even when logic suffers--like Gone with the Wind before it and Titanic after. Sharif, who achieved stardom in Lean's previous film, Lawrence of Arabia, mostly looks noble, but the supporting cast is spiky: Rod Steiger as a fat-cat monster, Tom Courtenay as a self-righteous revolutionary, and Klaus Kinski and Alec Guinness in smaller roles. Geraldine Chaplin, in her adult debut, plays the doctor's compliant wife. Robert Bolt's screenplay won one of the film's five Oscars, with another going to perhaps the most immediately recognizable element of the movie: Maurice Jarre's romantic music, with its hugely popular "Lara's Theme" weaving in and out of a swooning score. --Robert Horton

Description

Lara inspires lechery in Komarovsky (her mother's lover who is a master at surviving whoever runs Russia) and can't compete with passion for the revolution of the man she marries, Pasha. Her true love is Zhivago who also loves his wife. Lara is the one who inspires poetry. The story is narrated by Zhivago's half brother Yevgraf, who has made his career in the Soviet Army. At the beginning of the film he is about to meet a young woman he believes may be the long lost daughter of Lara and Zhivago.

5 out of 5 stars Doctor Zhivago.......2007-06-27

Based on Boris Pasternak's Nobel Prize-winning novel, David Lean's second masterpiece (after "Lawrence of Arabia") is a sumptuous, absorbing epic in the grand tradition of filmmaking. Sharif and Christie (often glimpsed in adoring close-ups) are ravishing to watch, as Lean turns an earth-shattering moment in world history into high romantic drama. Brimming with unforgettable images of the Russian steppes captured by Oscar-winning lensman Carlo Ponti, Lean's snowy, romantic spectacle is just what the "Doctor" ordered, with marvelous ensemble work by Rod Steiger, Alec Guinness, Tom Courtenay, and Klaus Kinski.

5 out of 5 stars Got exactly what I asked for when I asked for it.......2007-06-08

I forgot my step-dad's 60th birthday and had to overnight/express ship this DVD set to him and it actually ended up working out better than if I had remembered. He has wanted this movie for years because he went to the premier in the 60's on the east coast. He was home when it arrived on a Saturday and he ended up feeling more special because of all of the fuss and the hand delivery by FedEx. The film is stunning, as ever. I borrowed it as soon as my parents had watched it and it held up beautifully on my HDTV (61" screen) which I did not expect. I was highly satisfied with the whole process and the product. I completely recommend using the ticker on items that tells you how soon you can get them anywhere in the country - fabulous little feature. Excellent service.

1 out of 5 stars Brilliant? Hardly!.......2007-05-21

David Lean was in over his head with this film adaptation of the historic book by Pasternak. There is absolutely no justification for this movie to be so long since it hardly touches the complexities of its source. When I saw the film during its original release, I wondered why it was taking so long to get to the point. I never did get the "point". Then again I don't understand all the fuss around "Gone With the Wind" either.

The performances by Shariff and Christie were amazing. By that I mean that it appeared that they were filmed separately performing their roles, then the results were edited together. Talk about no chemistry!

Yes the cinematography is grand, however, the music score is minimalistic.

If you enjoy daytime soap operas, then you might enjoy this film.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Purchase This DVD!.......2007-04-22

Many scenes have been cut out. I saw the origninal movie when it originaly came out and this is NOT original.

Do not buy this version if you want the original version. I wish I knew where to get the original.

Please advise.

Oliver Stone would like to have the last word on America's media culture of voyeurism and violence, but whatever he's trying to say in this grisly, unconventional movie comes across terribly garbled. Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis play traveling serial killers who become television celebrities when a Geraldo-like personality (Robert Downey Jr.) turns their madness into the biggest story in the country. Stone extensively rewrote an original script by Quentin Tarantino, and he employs a mosaic of different film stocks, video, and pop pastiches to create a sense of blurred lines between visual phenomena. (The background on Lewis's character's life as an abused child, for instance, is presented as a sitcom starring Rodney Dangerfield.) But the result of these experiments is a pompous, even amateurish effort at grasping the reins of a real-life national debate. One almost wants to tell Stone to sit down and raise his hand next time if he thinks he has something to say. The controversial director would like Natural Born Killers to be nothing less than a monumental achievement, but it's one of the emptier entries in his filmography. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars Not What the Title Implies.......2007-05-18

THIS IS NOT THE DIRECTORS CUT.

I give the Directors Cut 5 stars, and ordinarily I would give even the edited version at least 4, but when I purchased "The Oliver Stone Collection" edition of this movie, I assumed the movie contained therein would be the Directors Cut. IT IS NOT.

The deleted scenes are great to have, but those scenes were also contained in the old beat-up VHS of NBK I owned years and years ago and lost. Attempting to replace it (my DIRECTORS CUT version), I bought this one on DVD. I was extremely disappointed that this is not the version I had come to love.

Very little of the movie is deleted, but purists seeking to obtain the TRUE version of this movie should stay away. Remember when Robert Downey Jr. gets a hole shot in his hand? Gone (or at least cut away far faster than it's supposed to). Remember when Tommy Lee Jones gets his head mounted on a stick? Gone. These are just two examples.

For those of you specifically seeking the Directors Cut, this is not it. I love this movie to death, but I was looking for something specific and did not get it. Very misleading labeling, if you ask me.

    1 out of 5 stars mushroom-fueled mess.......2007-03-25

it amazes me that people give this mushroom eater money to make crapola like this.
I usually like Harrrelson, J. Lewis is (very often) terrific in everything she does--but here, man, both are UN-NATURAL, stiff--and not to be taken serious at all. Nothing that happens in this flick has a flicker of believability.
I'd say this is another one for the trash--except I have way too much respect for the late, great Rodney Dangerfield to do that. Too bad his appearance is nothing more than a cameo here.

Lastly, I liked Platoon just fine when I saw it many years ago; it was right on the mark, authentic...however, this effort here is one, big, bogus mess. It seems somebody's had too damn many mushrooms...or something.

5 out of 5 stars Warning - This movie is deeply violent and disturbing.......2007-03-15

This is one of the most haunting movies i have ever seen, It is one of my favorites. Those of you who havent seen this, read the warning above. If you like Tarentino-ish movies like yours truly, than watch it. The riot scene at the end of the movie gives me chills every time I watch it.

    4 out of 5 stars discombobulated.......2007-03-08

i always wanted to use that word (discombobulated) for a movie and this movie is a perfect one. everything from the soundtrack to violence and the cameo appearence from the late Rodney Dangerfield all turn this bizarre movie into a success. it felt as if you really took a trip into the mind of a couple of maniacs, in a way that they saw the world.

not for everyone is an understatement. If violence isn't a problem, go ahead and watch. There are plenty of trip scenes where i almost felt like either this movie or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was copying each other somewhat (not sure which one came out first and don't feel like looking it up)

nevertheless, i loved this movie for a long time. it had the perfect soundtrack picked for it as well as many memorable scenes. it was one movie you can't erase from your brain so if you haven't watched it yet, the name alone should let you know what it's about if it wasn't obvious enough. I think the reason so many people didn't like it is because the movie jumps around quite a bit, feeling very disconnected. Of course, that was the effect the director was going for so you could feel what these two nutty a--holes were going through. i say in that aspect, he succeeded.

    4 out of 5 stars Awe-inspiring........2007-02-28

Natural Born Killers (Oliver Stone, 1994)

I never really expected all that much from Natural Born Killers. All the reviews I've read have spent thousands of words going on and on about what a scathing indictment of American media culture this movie is as if it's the only thing about the movie that matters. That'll teach me to listen to reviewers. What's great about Natural Born Killers is that, within the space of Stone's ham-handed assault on the media, there are two characters who have a real relationship. We see how that relationship unfolds, in all its ugly glory. And that's what will keep you riveted.

This doesn't feel like an Oliver Stone movie, really. He deals with the basic nastiness of his premise in a dadaesque fashion more reminiscent of David Lynch or Peter Jackson than Oliver Stone; the uglier the scene he's depicting, the more over-the-top he gets. The cast is more than ready to ham it up with him. Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis make perfect thrill-killers, but it's some of the minor characters who really shine here. Who knew Rodney Dangerfield could project such an air of depraved menace? Tommy Lee Jones and Tom Sizemore, whose characters could have easily been cardboard cutouts representing the corruption of the law enforcement, are three-dimensional (though Jones' character never misses a chance to play to stereotype). Everyone seems as if they're having a great time. Kind of odd given that mass murder is the subject of the movie, but there you go.

Capping that is the direction, which is exceptional throughout. The film comes across as thoroughly frenetic, partially because Stone manhandled five hundred more cuts into this movie than there are in Dawn of the Dead (which held the previous record), and Natural Born Killers is almost half an hour shorter. The movie plays like an adrenaline rush-- which is, of course, exactly what Stone intended. It pounds away at the viewer, merciless and relentless; it may be the only film extant capable of leaving an audience physically exhausted after doing nothing more than sitting in a comfortable chair for two hours.

Somehow, after all these words, I've only touched the tip of the iceberg about Natural Born Killers. Since I'm running out of room, I'll just have to say "trust me-- this was one of the best American films of the 1990s." **** ½

5 out of 5 stars The best latin film in the last years!!!! .......2007-05-09

I was very pleased with this film, latin originated films have been improving in all spects,
it is also a beautiful story and they made an exellent job in casting for every character.

This film makes you feel involved in the story.

This is a beautiful film that I will always remember and I'm thankfull that Amazon helped me find
this movie here in the U.S. because I coudn't find it anywhere in the U.S.

P.S. please provide more latin films. Thank you.

4 out of 5 stars Refreshingly familiar but also new.......2007-03-31

I enjoyed this. It's a reminder of how classic the premise of Romeo and Juliet really is, but it's always nice to see the story cast in new and innovative ways. This film does that. Martha Higareda is lovely as Renata, and in general Fernando Sariñana does a great job of getting the most out of his young actors. For American viewers this will also have the refreshing complexity of recent Mexican film in that it shows the class frictions and prejudices.

I did think the ending played out a little to conveniently tragic. It's not exactly as the original, of course. That ending might have been too elaborate to get into this story realistically. Instead the director goes for a gritty, believable sort of realism.

5 out of 5 stars Best Mexican Movie Ever.......2007-03-03

It is the best Romo & Juliet movie ever. I can watch it over and over and over again and not get sick of it. Evertime I watch I cry. I just shows that when two people love each other they will do whatever they have to do to be together.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST SURPRISE IN MEXICAN CINEMA.......2006-12-26

This is one of the most powerful, tender, and well-acted films of forbidden love I have ever seen with an amazing cast with a beautifully interwoven soundtrack of the best Spanish rock bands in Mexico. I bought the DVD in Mexico in '02 just a year after its theatrical release without having seen it. I only asked about it since I was seeing posters all over the city.

I was glad that I bought it and showed it to my Spanish students. The result was nothing but tears and amazement at a beautifully told story of an impossible love because of an extreme difference in class. A teenage boy from a humble upper low class family falls in love with a upper class teenage girl; a love that is frowned upon in reality in actual Mexico City, where the story takes place.

Be ready to feel for the characters, understand the societal structure, and sense the frustration that the two main characters face while they struggle to be together for love. An amazing film for being a teenage love story... This was truly an Oscar-worthy film!

4 out of 5 stars STILL THE BEST!.......2007-06-19

As much as I admire Cary Grant for his presence and easy charm, he lacks the worldliness and dramatic depth of Charles Boyer whom I earlier admired in 'Algiers.' He's more graceful and expressive and his consumate Frenchness makes the contrast between he and Dunne all the more interesting and romantic. As for Irene Dunne, she's so effervescent compared to Kerr. Kerr seemed somewhat brittle for all her sincereity and warmth.

5 out of 5 stars Better than remake.......2007-05-22

I agree with the above reviews. I can only add that after seeing "Love Affair", "An Affair to Remember" will never be the same for me. I enjoyed seeing that movie time after time, but there is no comparison. These actors are much, much better cast! Although I love Cary Grant, I didn't accept him as the grandson of the grandmother or as an artist or playboy. Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne float through this elegantly and naturally. I also agree that the black and white filming is very effective. Anyone who liked "An Affair to Remember" will LOVE "Love Affair".

4 out of 5 stars This Is a Job For George Feltenstein.......2006-10-14

I'd be hard-pressed to decide if I like this version of the story better than 1957's "An Affair to Remember"; both versions have their strengths. In this one, Irene Dunne's charm and comedic talents- to say nothing of her phenomenal singing ability- carry the day. In case anyone's wondering, that's really her carolling out "Sing My Heart", effortlessly hitting a gooseflesh-inducing high note towards the end , then doubling the stakes with an even higher final one.

This was obviously a class "A" effort by RKO when it was made in 1939, with the best of everything that studio had to offer brought to bear on the production. Unfortunately, something has happened to put "Love Affair" into the public-domain category, with the result that we have the film only in badly-duped prints full of splices, jumps, hiss and blur. "Love Affair" deserves the best treatment that Warner Bros., present owners of its surviving elements, could give it if they chose.

Hopefully, "Love Affair's" plight will soon rouse the sympathies of George Feltenstein, the Warner's exec who is in charge of restoring the studio's classic catalogue. While those public-domain dupes will always have a price advantage, seeing "Love Affair" restored to Warner Home Video's impeccable standards would be well worth the necessarily higher price.

In the meantime, the present DVD is much, much better than nothing, and "Love Affair" is worth your time no matter how bad it looks, because Irene Dunne's performance shines through every technical glitch.

4 out of 5 stars The Original and Still Best Version of the Classic Tearjerker.......2006-10-04

Directed by Leo McCarey, this 1939 romantic classic is the first and best version of the old warhorse of a fateful shipboard romance between an aimless playboy and a nightclub singer, both engaged but appearing to be destined to reunite on the top floor of the Empire State Building. The elaborate, shot-for-shot 1957 remake again directed by McCarey with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr is much better known, and Warren Beatty even saw fit to remake it yet again with his wife Annette Bening for a 1994 update featuring an 87-year old Katharine Hepburn in her last film role.

But it all started with this more modest film starring a smart, luminous Irene Dunne as Terry McKay and Charles Boyer all continental charm as Michel Marnet. The story is as contrived as ever, but the script co-written by McCarey, Mildred Cram, Delmer Daves and Donald Ogden Stewart is full of clever dialogue to go with the soap opera elements. It's too bad the print condition is so bad given that it has fallen into the public domain, but you can still get a strong sense of the craftsmanship behind the film, especially Rudolph Maté's soft-focus cinematography.

Even though Maria Ouspenskaya gives her most sympathetic performance as Grandmother Janou (she was wonderfully malevolent in "The Wolf Man"), it's really the chemistry between the two stars which keeps this afloat, especially Dunne who was so dexterous in comedy and drama in her prime that she is far superior to either Kerr or Bening. She even gets to sing two songs most winningly, one a Harold Arlen gem called "Sing My Heart". Even though you are likely to know every scene by heart from the 1957 remake, it's still quite worthwhile to enjoy the antiquated charms of the original.

    4 out of 5 stars A classic gem.......2006-07-27

I regard An Affair to Remember (Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr) a very romantic film noted for its well-thought dialogue, wholesome plot and excellent performances by its leading characters. Love Affair was actually a much earlier 1939 production which I watched only now. To my pleasant surprise, despite the nearly identical dialogues and storyline, Love Affair has its own edge and would not be eclipsed by its highly successful successor.

Charles Boyer (Gaslight), with his signature French accent, effortlessly played Michel Marnet - a painter who never had a job and never worried about money. I think Cary Grant a great actor. Yet Charles Boyer was superb in portrayiing a "playboy" who enjoys life and does not conform to society and mundane needs. Irene Dunne (Life with Father) was as elegant and beautiful as Greta Garbo. Together the two epitomized the blue-blooded upper class - not just in their look and living style - with an air of royalty around them.

Here lies the first difference between the two films - In Love Affair, Boyer-Dunne looked like blue-blooded European royalties but had no money. In An Affair to Remember, Grant-Kerr looked ordinary folk who had acquired good taste. That said, there were great chemistry in both couples. The second difference lied in the fact that Love Affair was B&W and not digitally remastered, which might not be a bad thing afterall. It gave an authentic feel of a classic love story retold. And the magnificent Boyer-Dunne more than made up for this technicality defect. They didn't so much as act, they just graced the screen with their presence. Whether you had seen An Affair to Remember or not, this movie itself is a classic gem, performed by two wonderful stars, that appeals to the romantics.

Watching the Spanish film Lovers of the Arctic Circle is like slowly falling into a yearning and melancholy dream. Two children--Ana and Otto--meet and instantly know that they're soul mates. Their parents--one of whom is divorced, the other a widow--also meet and fall in love. Now that they share the same house, Ana and Otto (by now teenagers) become secret lovers. But troubles intervene: Otto's mother dies, for which Otto blames himself and his father, and he leaves Ana and becomes a airplane pilot. Though their paths cross again and again throughout their lives, they keep missing each other until the power of their love finally draws them together. But the hypnotic power of Lovers of the Arctic Circle lies in how the movie unfolds, deftly shifting back and forth between the different perspectives of Ana and Otto. The gradual interweaving of their lives accumulates into a metaphysical swoon; rarely is the notion of romantic destiny made so heartfelt and so mysterious at the same time. --Bret Fetzer

    5 out of 5 stars I didn't want to like it..........2006-10-24

Ok just a bit about your reviewer here... I'm not a big fan of "chick flicks" and if you tell me you've got a great movie I should watch, but it's got subtitles, well then there's a certain place we all know of that's surely going to freeze over before I watch it.

That all being said, I just got a DVR and was recording a days worth of movies off of one of our HD channels and this was one of them.

Although it kills me to say it, I truly enjoyed the film. I speak enough spanish to get me by, but not enough that I could follow everything they were saying in the movie, so I was more or less reliant on the subtitles to get me by. I found it curious how when the focus of your attention is to what is going on, on the screen and your movie experience isn't solely driven by what you're hearing from dialog you tend to appreciate a movie much more. The film was definitely worth watching.

4 out of 5 stars Finnaly comes to dvd .......2006-09-02

Not like I have been looking to get this movie on dvd, but it is great to see that this movie from 1998 has arrived on dvd, and I bet on an all new video tape, for those of you that still buy video tapes regulary. The best thing Ican say, even if you know what the story of this movie, even through this movie is in Spanish, there are English subtitles. The movie is told from the eyes of both the 2 main characters of this movie, Otto, and Anna. If you don't know what the story of this movie is, well you should. Eight years old Otto (Peru Medem), is playing with a ball one day after school in the playground, and the ball gets away and into the woods, Otto chases after it, and meets Ana (Sara Valiente). He feels in love with her, and then the story goes back in a flashback to show how Ana got thier in the first place in first of the many chance meetings these 2 go through in the whole movie, Ana's father has passed away, and she runs away, and gets lost in the woods, and meets Otto, in her eys she thinks this is the her late father back from the dead, as a little boy. Then in one of these coincidences, Otto throws paper airplanes, and Ana picks one of up, and gives it to her mother, telling her it is from "that man" which is Otto's father. Otto's parents are dirvoced, and Ana's Mother is widowed. And then they meet and fall in love, and then Otto and Ana becomes step-brother and sister, and then lovers as teenagers. Then as adults they become seprated, when one of thier step-parents dies, and Otto finds himself gulity of it, and rins away, and becomes a pilot, guess where they meet once again, well let's just say I will not give it away for you, if you want to find out what happens, I urge you to watch this movie.

I've seen this movie multiple times, and it always astounds me. Worth every cent!

4 out of 5 stars Enchanting, artistic, and captivating.......2004-11-20

This film requires that you surrender any notions of the feasibility of the actual plot, but it is nonetheless an enchanting tale. If you enjoyed "Sliding Doors" or if you believe in fate, you'll particularly enjoy this. The film is beautiful, with indelible images that still haunted my memory years after I first saw this film - which is why I finally decided to purchase it. The end (and, in appropriate "circular" fashion, the beginning) will leave you mystified and breathless.

5 out of 5 stars The 2 Greatest Stars of Mexican Cinema.......2007-04-08

One doesn't usually associate director Ismael Rodriguez with Technicolor and CinemaScope, rather with the earlier b&w Pedro Infante films like "Nosotros los Pobres," and "Los Tres Garcia," but this film has brilliant color, spectacular scenic vistas, and is gorgeous to look at, and one wishes it would be released in widescreen to fully appreciate the beauty of its Oaxacan landscape and the many historic landmarks. "Tizoc" is also special because it stars the two most renown actors of the Epoca de Oro of Mexican filmmaking, Pedro Infante and Maria Felix. Infante plays Tizoc, a humble but noble native of royal bloodlines, hated by the rest of the Mixteca villagers because he is not from the same tribe, and despised by the white man because of being "indio." When Tizoc first sees Maria, the headstrong, artist daughter of a landowner, he thinks she is the Virgen Maria, and then when Maria, ignorant of a local custom, gives him her handkerchief to wipe some blood from an injury, he falls hopelessly in love with her. Maria is engaged to handsome Capitan Arturo (Eduardo Fajardo), and trying to sort out the confusions and errors of many is Fray Bernardo (Andres Soler, excellent as the "Padrecito").

A lot of the dialogue is in a semi-dialect but is understandable, and the film has a certain stiffness to it (perhaps because Infante walks with a slight stoop and bent knees!), but nevertheless it has loads of charm, and is endearing due to Tizoc's sweet soul and his ability to converse with animals, which makes him poetic and intuitive. Maria Felix as always looks like a goddess, and her presence fills the screen like few superstars have managed to do. With the exception of one short scene which alternates betwen being a little too dark and a little too light, the film is in very good condition. Alex Phillips did the glorious cinematography, Raul Lavista the interesting score, where birdsongs are the main focus of the soundtrack, and "Tizoc" won a Golden Globe Award in 1958 for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as many other awards, like a Golden Ariel for Ismael Rodriguez, and a Silver Award for Best Actor at the 1957 Berlin International Festival, given to Infante posthumously. Pedro Infante (1917-1957) crashed his plane near Merida in the Yucutan, and 50 years after his passing, still reigns supreme in the hearts of millions.

In 1986, Federico Fellini's satiric take on television vulgarianism might have been considered, well, Fellini-esque. Today, the grotesque commercials and insipid game shows he depicts pale next to reality. Billed in their heyday as Ginger & Fred, Ameilia (Giulietta Masina) and Pippo (Marcello Mastroianni) are reunited after 30 years to perform their Rogers-Astaire ballroom dance tribute act on We Are Proud to Present, a television variety show. Amelia is now a widowed grandmother. Pippo has gone somewhat to seed. Can they recapture the magic amidst this surreal circus of transvestites, midgets, and a Ronald Reagan impersonator? Ginger & Fred works best when Amelia and Pippo's bittersweet reunion is center stage, thanks to the impeccable charm and grace of Masina (La Strada) and the incomparable Mastroianni (La Dolce Vita), two actors most closely associated with the director. Ginger & Fred is as much a tribute to artists ("benefactors of humanity," someone notes at one point) as it is to the ephemeral state of cinema itself. "We are phantoms," Pippo tells his partner. "We arise from the darkness and disappear again." Like Pippo, Fellini makes a few missteps, but Ginger & Fred is ultimately quite moving ("Bravo," a fan congratulates Amelia. "You made me cry."), with an unforgettable train station finale. Fellini made only two more films, but Ginger & Fred would have made a fitting swan song. --Donald Liebenson

The legendary Federico Fellini, Oscar®-nominated 12 times for such films as "La Dolce Vita" and "8-1/2," skewers society in general and TV in particular with this nostalgic tribute to the past that won a Golden Globe® as Best Foreign Language Film. Starring Giulietta Masina (Mrs. Fellini) and frequent Fellini leading man Marcello Mastroianni, the film tells the story of two retired performers, Amelia and Pippo, who once wowed crowds with their dance recreations of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and are now reuniting for a nationwide TV special. The New York Times' Vincent Canby said the movie "ranks with the best work Mr. Fellini has ever done." In Italian with English subtitles.
