The Road Warrior is already a classic, sans condescending genre distinctions like "sci-fi" or "action." But the story of Mel Gibson's stately antihero begins in Mad Max, George Miller's low-budget debut in which Max is a "Bronze" (cop) in an unspecified postapocalyptic future with a buddy-partner and family. But unlike most films set in the devastated future, Mad Max is especially notable because it is poised between our industrialized world and total regression to medieval conditions. The scale tips towards disintegration when the Glory Riders burn into town on their bikes like an overamped cadre of Brando's Wild Ones. Representing the active chaos that will eventually overwhelm the dying vestiges of civil society, they take everything dear to Max, who will exact due revenge. His flight into the same wilds that created the villains artfully sets up the morally ambiguous character of the subsequent films. --Alan E. Rapp

Description

Setting Mel Gibson on a sure path to superstardom, this highly acclaimed "crazy collide-o-scope"(Newsweek) of highway mayhem "cinematically defined the postapocalyptic landscape" (TV Guide). Featuring eye-popping stunts that are "electrifying and very convincing" (Variety) and "an authentically nihilistic spirit" (The Village Voice), Mad Max is "pure cinematic poetry" (Time). In the ravaged near future, a savage motorcycle gang rules the road. Terrorizing innocent civilians while tearing up the streets, the ruthless gang laughs in the face ofa police force hell-bent on stopping them. But they underestimate one officer: Max Rockatansky (Gibson). And when the bikers brutalize Max's best friend and family, they send him into a mad frenzy that leaves him with only one thing left in the world to live forrevenge!

5 out of 5 stars Mad Max.......2007-07-04

George Miller's first entry in the three part series helped boost Gibson to stardom, and showed Hollywood a thing or two about making an explosive action flick on a shoestring budget. The bleak, desolate near-future is intriguingly rendered: the world looks like a junk shop in a desert. The baddies are a dirty, gruesome lot, which only gets the audience more revved when Max goes after them in earnest. Gibson has "star" written all over him. Hyperkinetic stunts punctuate this raw, rugged actioner.

3 out of 5 stars More a first draft than a real classic.......2007-02-25

It's not altogether surprising that Mad Max got such short shrift when it came out Stateside with an unfortunate dubbing job to eliminate the `Strine accents so American International could pretend it was an American film (Mel Gibson suffered perhaps a worse indignity with his screen credit moved to last position, just before the lab credit on the trailers). Much of what people remember and love about Max is delivered in the sequel rather than this first outing. Indeed, at times it feels more like a blueprint than a proper movie and Gibson barely registers in the surprisingly little screen time he has - the villains, who all seem to be doing either premature Danny Huston impersonations or somewhat more timely German New Romantic turns make much more of an impression. Not only do huge sections of the film keep him offscreen, but he makes little impact in his underwritten role when he is on. In many ways, this is just a first low-budget draft of Max's world - civilization hasn't entirely crumbled yet and the precious juice is still flowing even if parts are getting hard to find. Still, the car stunts are good, if somewhat thin on the ground, but this is one case where the sequels are definitely better.

MGM/UA's special edition offers reasonable extras, but they are limited by the non-involvement of George Miller and Mel Gibson and the unavailability of any archive footage. The making of featurette and audio commentary from crew members are the best of the bunch while the Gibson featurette tends to be too much of a puff piece. Despite being listed as the Australian trailer, the theatrical trailer and the accompanying TV spots are all from the US release. Thankfully the original Australian soundtrack to the feature is included on this disc.

5 out of 5 stars All time favourite.......2007-02-16

I remember sneaking into the Forum Theatre in Melbourne as a kid to see this gem (R rated). It is still as good today on the big plasma as back then. The boys come over and watch it every AFL Grand Final day. Glad to see they released this in the States with the original soundtrack. You will be amused to know we in Australia specially purchased your old version to see how it was dubbed. Pretty funny stuff seeing as Mel has a bit of an American accent in the film anyway. Love how it is all shot around where we live in Melbourne. If you liked this, check out Odd Angry Shot, another film not to be missed

20 wasted dollars! I obviously missed that the dvd was in american format. Luckily my son living in USA was home, so I could watch it on his apple-computer. It was also in no way possible to copy and open the film for european standard.
Please make clear in the presentation of films if they only could be played in american format.

A strong candidate for the designation of most thrilling action movie ever made (the turbo-charged exhilaration of its full-throttle highway chases has never been equaled), the second part of George Miller's post-apocalyptic trilogy is also a magnificently imagined movie myth. Like the Star Wars trilogy (by that other George) the Mad Max films draw their inspiration from the works of mythologist Joseph Campbell. In the 1979 original, Max (Mel Gibson) is a policeman, the last guardian of civilization and order in a devastated world reduced to chaos. But when a leather-clad gang of sadomasochistic speed demons mows down Max's family, his remaining connections to humanity are also permanently severed. After brutally exacting his revenge, Max wanders off into the wasteland alone, "a burned out shell of a man" who (to paraphrase The Searchers) is destined to wander forever between the winds. In The Road Warrior, Max rediscovers a sliver of his shattered humanity, and a spark of redemption, when he helps an embattled colony of pioneers fight off the savages who are after that most precious of all commodities: "guzzline." Max is transformed into a legendary hero, just as Mel Gibson was catapulted to international movie stardom. With its final stirring images, The Road Warrior transcends its genre (whatever that may be--science fiction? Western? action adventure?) and becomes something timeless. It's a great movie. --Jim Emerson

3 out of 5 stars Not Mad Enough.......2007-06-09

This is an interesting film, which if occasionally a bit wooden, virtually created its own genre overnight, and made Mel Gibson a star.

Perhaps its most noteable feature was George Miller's use of unusual camera angles, which created one or two iconic images. Sometimes it has the feeling of an exploitation film, but it never develops in that way and by today's standards it seems rather tame.

It looks as though it was made on a pretty low budget, and I prefer the brasher sequels where a little more polish was added. It remains a film curiosity, but really not much more than that.

5 out of 5 stars A post-apocalyptic standard..........2007-05-15

If "Raiders of the Lost Ark" set the standard for serial cliffhangers in the modern sense, then "The Road Warrior" sets the standard for post-apocalyptic storytelling...

Set in a bleak future with no formal laws and a need for gas, bands of humanity scramble for everything we take for granted. Even though $3+ bucks at the pump is wrong, having to literally fight and kill for it is something I hope we will never have to face ...

"The Road Warrior" is a timeless story of rebellious nobility and the true goodness of humanity despite its struggle between greed and survival...

4 out of 5 stars The Road Warrior.......2007-05-07

This is a great addition to the first in the saga of the Mad Max movies. This film is a non stop roller coaster trill ride with great stunts and vehicles, as well as good characters and acting over all. A definite must own for a fan of this series.

5 out of 5 stars Sorely in need of an upgrade!.......2007-03-20

The Road Warrior is one of my all time favorite movies without a doubt. And its story has been told many times in all the reviews below but what I think is sorely needed is some kind of a deluxe edition DVD. There appears to be few, if any, extras here. And its prequel mad Max has already gotten a special edition, why not its sequel? For instance, how about a commentary track from director George Miller? I know that getting Gibson to reminisce about this film is an unlikely proposition. And I'd love to see the original trailer for this film. If I recall it ended with a ghostly voice saying "...The Road Warrior..you better pray he's out there" On the technical side, how about some info on the famous car Gibson drove here?

5 out of 5 stars Not cheesy, not just an action movie........2007-01-19

You know, just because a film has action in it does not mean it is designed for morons and any other message is secondary. The Road Warrior knows when not to take itself too seriously, but it is a frightening glimpse at what human beings are capable of, and the type of heroics it takes to overcome tyranny. Not light stuff by any stretch...

For so many of these reviewers I wonder what is really so "light" about seeing a woman savagely beaten and raped. Or the sickening behavior that leads to the killing of an innocent dog. The truth of the matter is that The Road Warrior is one hell of a movie that uses action and violence thrillingly -- but in the end winds up saying something about its nature -- a far stretch from what you will see from Jerry Bruckheimer.

The debate that goes on inside the camp is exactly the debate all societies face when dealing with barbarians. For my money, this film is better than Seven Samurai. And yes -- the action is AMAZING. It just feels pure, visceral in a way that most American films do not.

5 out of 5 stars The classic post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller.......2007-07-05

Sequel to the earlier Mad Max movie, The Road Warrior is a blast of fun and looks great on HD DVD.

I hadn't seen this in years but picked up the HD DVD right away, and it sure looks good. A very fun movie with the classic anti-hero hero Max and, of course, the great chase scene at the climax.

I seem to recall that the third movie, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, was a bloated bust of a sequel, but that hasn't been released on HD DVD yet...

5 out of 5 stars The best it's going to get for Mad Max fans.......2007-06-13

I'm rating this 5-stars not because it's the best look HD-DVD ever, but because I believe this is certainly the best presentation of Road Warrior that's ever been released, or will ever likely be released. It's a keeper.

I remember seeing this movie in the theater. I don't think even the film as shown in the theater contained this much detail, as I noticed details in the movie that I had not seen before. It's a excellent picture.

The sound is good, but nothing like blockbuster movies from recent years, because Road Warrior was made several years ago, and not exactly on a huge budget. Still, it's the best sound quality you're likely to hear for this movie.

Some purists may enjoy the fact that the movie is shown with the title "Mad Max 2" rather than "The Road Warrior" at the beginning, but I don't like it. When I saw the movie in the theater it said "The Road Warrior", and had a bright shining metal effect. I wanted to see THAT, not something that was originally shown in Austrailia. However, I'm not going to get all misty over it and lower the star rating.

If you have Road Warrior on DVD or LaserDisc this is one title that you should absolutely buy the replacement HD-DVD. It makes a big difference.

4 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-05-19

I'm saying "finally" because we've finally received a version of the Road Warrior that looks outstanding! The picture looks the best I've ever seen and while the sound isn't as great in terms of bass reproduction, it still sounds very clear, just a tiny bit lackluster. Several of the scenes have a bit of softness to them probably due to age but I'd say about 95% of the film looks crystal clear. There aren't many extras other than an introduction by film critic Leonard Maltin and a filmmaker commentary. A bit lacking in the extras department but the commentary is informative enough for film enthusiasts and fans of the film. It'd be nice to get a retrospective documentary one day on this classic.

At the end of the day, the movie is delivered in an above average presentation and definitely worth a peek in HD.

The Year is 2033. Earth has been clobbered with a comet, civilization has been destroyed, and it hasn't rained in 11 years. Nearly all the water on the planet is controlled by the evil Water and Power company, which is in turn controlled by the even more evil Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell). Who stands in the way? Some mysterious mutants called the Rippers and, of course, Tank Girl. Lori Petty plays Tank Girl, the wisecracking, defiant heart of the movie, as kind of an inner child gone wild. Unfortunately Petty can't quite carry a movie on her own--her zingers frequently fall flat and she seems to be continually worried that we still like her. Luckily there's Naomi Watts as Jet Girl to save the day: smart, shy, and inherently way more appealing than Tank Girl. Tank Girl is based on the comic of the same name, and it is visually an eye-popper. It's worth watching for the insane set and costume designs alone. --Ali Davis

Description

If you're into in-your-face visuals, outrageous action sequences and non-stop explosive laughs, this is your "rip-roaring power surge of a movie" (L.A. Weekly). The year's 2033 and since a humongous meteor hit earth, the world just hasn't been the same. No Movies, No Cable TV, NO WATER!!! A mega-villain, Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell), the leader of Water & Power, holds the world in his grasp since he controls all the H2O down to the last drop...or so he thinks. Two colossal enemiesstand in his way: (1) The Rippers - an army of half-men/half-kangaroo people whose sole purpose is to bring down the W & P, and (2) a chick with a tank and tons of attitude - a.k.a. Tank Girl (Lori Petty). Kesslee had better get a grip on reality and his water jugs because not even a run in her stocking is going to stop her from saving the planet.

5 out of 5 stars Comicbook Mania At It's Best!.......2007-04-07

Tank Girl is a contender for cult film status as we speak! This has to be the best film ever done in the comic character genre! It is just so funny, belly laugh, funny!!! Lorie Petty was perfection as Rebecca Buck, our own favorite Tank Girl. Naomi Watts played straight woman to Petty's manic force with equal aplomb. The Rippers(kangaroo-human mutants) added to this mix of meyham and merriment! Booga(Tank Girl's love interest)was adorable. Jeff Kober(in a very rare comedic turn for this great character actor)managed to keep Booga the vigilant warrior, yet infuse the character with the innocent, childlike qualities,as called for in the original source material! Ice-T,grumpy,profoundly arrogant, scored as the Ripper,T-Saint. Malcolm McDowell,as the wickedly dark,Kesslee, finishes out the stand-out members of the cast.
The DVD of Tank Girl was a quality production, but simply the film, itself. There were no extras and this was a bit disappointing. There was a lot of controversy between the director of Tank Girl,Rachel Talalay, and the studio over the edit of the film. It would have been just grand if a lot of the deleted footage could have been added to the DVD. A director's commentary and reflections from the cast would also have been a welcome addition. However,on the whole, the DVD of Tank Girl is well worth the buy.

I ordered two copies of TANK GIRL, and they arrived very early in the arrival date spectrum. My only complaint is that in one copy, the center part of the inside of the DVD was broken, allowing the DVD itself to move freely inside the case. The DVD didn't get damaged, but now the case is trash.

5 out of 5 stars Lori Petty, Lori Petty.......2007-01-04

GREAT!!!! I think Lorie Petty is a great Actress that is so under appreciated and under utilized . She is a really good actress . I would love to see her in more films. This movie is so different from any movie I have ever seen, I loved it .
Not only does it entertain but it also has a message, well really more than one message. If you appreciate movies that are different and not the same old cookie cutter movie than this one is for you! It is original, It is funny , serious , stupid and crazy but when you put it altogether you get a great Sci-Fi movie with a lot of heart. If you have never seen this movie you really should!
I can't say enough about this movie with out telling you about it. Just take a look at the cover art and you will get the idea. I really had to hunt to find this movie on DVD and I'm so glad I did. Enjoy

Another reviewer said Gummo was "unlike anything else of TV." My Holy Goodness, how right they were. If a lunatic was voted mayor of a town, Gummo would be the film depicting the townsfolk who call such a place "home-sweet-home."

We are introduced to the following: two awkward, gangly teens who kill cats and sell the rotting corpses to a local grocery store for a dollar per pound; three sisters who are about as backwards as anything this side of Appalachian poverty; a seedy brother who pimps his retarded sister out to teenaged boys; a sinister-looking young lady who, obviously being on the slow side, enjoys walking around the town singing "Jesus loves me this I know" as well as the always depraved "A-B-C-D-EFG-" song. Along the way, we also meet a young man wearing nothing but some swim trunks and a pink bunny hat who has the habit of urinating on cars driving beneath a local underpass. Oh, and for fits and giggles, we meet a group of rowdy mullet-styled rednecks who get their kicks from wrestling kitchen chairs to the point of exhaustion.

Sound like fun? This is a messed-up movie about twisted people living in the aftermath of a tornado that has swepth through their little slice of heaven. Nothing runs together smoothly as scenes and storylines come and go without rhyme or reason. Even the David Lynch and Terrence Malick crowds out there will feel disoriented in about 90% of this film.

A word of caution: if you begin to watch Gummo, you will have trouble turning away. I would liken it to a drug addiction that you know will harm you in some if you keep using it, but you end up alleviating such a warning by telling yourself, "Hey, just a little more. Just a little bit mo...."

1 out of 5 stars time better spent elswhere.......2007-05-19

Here are some alternative suggestions to watching this movie:
1) spend the hour and a half in a forest preserve out house...
2) try making your own crystal meth and then doing it
3) eat some spoiled chicken, get sick, puke and then role around in it.
4) piss in your pants and don't change your clothes
Doing one or all of the above is a far better experience than sitting through this piece of vile trash.

1 out of 5 stars I like cats........2007-05-19

I hated this trash. I'm so glad I saw it on IFC and didn't pay for rental. I can't ask for my money back. I do want that hour and a half back though. That so called writer/director(?) should go away.

3 out of 5 stars SMALL TOWN AMERICA FREAK SHOW........2007-05-19

This film eloquently shows what the rest of the world have always known, that small town America is full of inbred Morons, come to think of it, midwest citiiesof full of these morons as well.

3 out of 5 stars Objective review--GUMMO.......2007-05-14

So I tend to look at things in terms of nuetrality. This movie is freakin wierd, but incredibly artistic, take from it what you will. Its touching in its entirity as it lends insight into the shattered lives of victims of a devistating tornado in the unrecovering town of Xenia, OH. This is skewed by sensless acts of animal cruelty and odd behavior by residents which is obviously apparent in their off color choice of spare time activities. The movie ends abruptly leaving questions unanswered but more importantly a sense of sympathy for those in similar circumstances. It offers a startling depiction of a life very different than most, and a state of living not easily fathomed by most. This is very much a make-you-think kind of movie, especially in relation to the nature of human condition itself. Its a movie worth seeing for perspective if nothing else. It will be what you make of it....

This well-regarded cult film is a tense Kafka-esque tale concerning what happens to a likable computer guy who is in the wrong place at the wrong time in the city that never sleeps--New York. This is a New York infested with bizarre characters vividly brought to life by a once-in-a-lifetime cast. Griffin Dunne's wonderfully controlled comic performance as Paul Hackett is the glue that holds this increasingly surreal film together. Scorsese utilizes a full array of independent and underground film techniques, including special film speed manipulations, angles, and edits, deftly capturing the strange rhythms of an after-hours New York City. Many will find the jokes clever, and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny. Some, however, will find the film an excruciating series of staged circumstances setting up a sadistically cruel dark nightmare of horrors. And there are a few lines of dialogue so poorly written they remind you how unbelievable the thin story really is. But forgive the film these few lapses--overall it's a wild, surreal ride. The most offbeat character is the beehive-sporting, Monkee-obsessed neurotic played to perfection by Teri Garr. And the moment when Griffin Dunne uses his last quarter to play Peggy Lee's "Is That All There Is" and dances with Verna Bloom while an angry mob searches SoHo for him is an inspired bit of lunacy. --Christopher J. Jarmick

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Morbid Masterpiece.......2007-06-29

'After Hours' has to be one of the great classics in film. Martin Scorsese reinvents the directing wheel once again in 1985 for one of the darkest comedies in memory.

Paul (relatively unknown Griffin Dunne) is an annonymous everyman working at a New York office with cubicles and computers. Late at night in a cafe he meets a beautiful, but strange woman (Rosanna Arguette) who captivates him immediately. Demonstrating a scatter-brained conversation, they agree for him to meet her roommate who makes paper mache' paper weight bagels. Connecting with an interest in the novel he's reading, she seems vibrant if not suspiciously dysfunctional, but her zestful overture creates for him the spark of adventure.

Showcasing the city that never sleeps, he solidifies his date over the phone to venture over to the SoHo District. As a bad omen his cab ride from hell yields a placed twenty dollar bill that flies out of the cab onto the pavement. Trying to explain to the driver who only speaks in broken English, the man wrathfully drives out like a chariot out of Hades leaving him stranded with no resources but himself alone in the night.

At the apartment, he visits with the artist as she puts paper mache' on a figure he aptly, but inaccurately compares to Munch's "The Shriek" ("The Scream") From there he meets up with his bombshell date who immediately unveils her life in horrifying detail. Between the revealing creation in the living room and the woman's conversation of her horrible life, the rest of the night unravels even more from there. Featuring everything that could conceivably go wrong and camera angles that swirl around the beleaguered protagonist, the solitary agony of one man's night comes to roost in the most tightly woven existential nightmare probably ever conceived in comedy.

While 'After Hours' doesn't get all the accolades of great movies like 'Taxi' and 'Raging Bull,' it nevertheless, broadens the scope of an unarguably talented director. 'After Hours' may not be Scorsese's best, but it certainly is my favorite of all of his works.

4 out of 5 stars Different Rule Apply After Hours.......2007-04-30

On one level, this movie looks like an oddity amongst the other films made by Martin Scorsese. It's a somewhat absurd dark comedy from the eighties that has more in common with a cult classic like "Something Wild" than it does with "Raging Bull." Supposedly, Tim Burton was originally slated to direct the film but stepped aside when Scorsese showed interest.

When you think about it, it's not that surprising that Scorsese would pick this film. Like Woody Allen and Spike Lee, a lot of his films are about New York. "Mean Streets," "Taxi Driver," "The Age of Innocence," and "Gangs of New York," are all about the city, at least in a way, and so is "After Hours," which is set in SoHo, just a couple of miles from Wall Street, but a world away.

The story here is about a guy who hates his job. One evening he meets a girl in a coffee shop. He gets her number and calls her back the same night and they decide to meet up, even though it's almost midnight. On the way there, the guy loses all his money and when his date turns into a disaster he spend the rest of the evening trying to get home and getting himself into one ridiculous situation after another.

This movie is a bit dated, so it may be hard to appreciate the first time through, although you can certainly get a laugh out of seeing some well-known actors in different roles (Rosanna Arquette, Catherine O'hara, Linda Fiorentino, Terri Garr, Cheech and Chong.) As with most cult comedies, I think the pleasure from this one probably comes with repeated viewings as you start to notice the little things about the film. There are a lot of subtleties and nuances to it and you might forget how ridiculous the plot is and appreciate the individual scenarios and performances.

5 out of 5 stars a perfect classical tragedy.......2007-03-14

the story is quite simple :

a single subject : a man is trying to go back home.
a single place : New York.

on a single day.

Much better than Corneille and Racine !!!

3 out of 5 stars After Hours by Victor Argo.......2007-01-04

This is an odd little film. I like it because it takes an innocent man, looking to spend some time with a girl he thought was cute and ends up through a string of weird coincidences, being chased by a torch-bearing mob through the streets of New York very late at night. It is hilarious in a very dark way and makes you realize how easy things can get out of your control. If you like quirky films, please give this one a try.

Absolutely hilarious! This poor guy has the worst luck ever all in a 12 hour period.

Given I love only three Jane Fonda Movies, Barbarella, China Syndrome and now The Morning After, this one seems the best of the three. Well sort of. Barbarella can not be beat when you are fater some weird over the top fun. Few movies can match Barbarella in its over the top goofyness. China Syndrome was well acted and pretty good all around. The Morning After has a "Funky 70's" burn out sort of feel to it. I like Morning after because I started out hating both characters and ended up so happy they both got together.

I like in this movie the sappy icky sweet ending one other reviewer seems to dislike. I like a movie that ends happily so you can imaging the two characters you have spent an hour investing in leave you with a hollywood happy ending pay off. The movies I hate are those that build the viewer up to hoping two partners or partner and side kick start building a life together. I hate the so called sophisticated endings more common in the newer generation of movies where the credits start rolling and the silly movie seems to have no resolution. Whats worse is many movies in so stupidly now its makes all the time you spend watching seem wasted.

This movie has a predictable ending but thats what makes it awesome to me. This movie was done right. I saw The Morning After on Chiller which repeats its movies to death so if you want to preview Morning After watch Chiller its bound to be on a couple dozen times in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Simply The Best: 5 Stars to Jane Fonda.......2007-06-01

This movie once again proves that Jane Fonda is simply the best actress alive today. She will always be remembered in the same way Bette Davis or Katherine Hepburn is remembered. Her performance here is stunning, and there is no doubt that she is the best thing about this film. I don't think Jane Fonda is capable of giving a bad performance, although her choices of film roles is sometimes questionable. Please Jane, try to find a role you can sink your acting teeth into like The Morning After, Klute, They Shoot Horses Don't They, and Coming Home. You were great in Monster-In-Law and Georgia Rule, but those movies are far behind your golden talent. Buy and watch The Morning After if you want to see how a classic actress can dominate the screen in every scene. Again, Jane Fonda is simply the best!

4 out of 5 stars A real treat.......2007-03-20

Really impressed with Jane Fonda's portrayal of an over-the-hill actress. She is certainly not afraid to show a not always glamorous role, but the chemistry between her and Jeff Bridges is amazing.

4 out of 5 stars too long absent from the screen.......2006-03-02

miss fonda returned last year to the movie screen with the monster-in-law film but with films like the morning after to her resume these are the performances we miss by a great actress.
here she shows a raw and yet vulnerable side as an alcholic actress seeking one last shot at fame and at love and in the process of achieving both is set up as a murderess. there are many great scenes of miss fonda in the movie, but the one that stands out is her walking a deserted street in LA on a morning after. you have been away too long miss fonda your fans are waiting for a return

4 out of 5 stars Not a 5 Star but very enjoyable.......2005-10-29

I have been waiting for this to come on DVD. Jane Fonda wakes up one morning next to a dead guy...rest of the movie Jeff Bridges helps her figure out " who done it ".

4 out of 5 stars Another good one.......2004-03-09

I really enjoyed this story. I never read the book, but I really enjoyed Holly Robinson in this one.

4 out of 5 stars Truly, The Way To The Top.......2003-11-24

Sometimes when I look within African-American cinema, it always seemed to be portrayed as Comedy within the theater these days. There really seems to be nothing about Drama and a love story, that really seems to break within the eyes. Once in awhile when that happens, I watch BET and some of the original flicks they've televised. A few of them are really quite good, and some of them need a little improvement. When I heard that one of the good ones, After All was set to come to video I was so happy. The film was based on the book "After All" by Lynn Emery, one of a handful of books by Arabesque novels.

The 1999 film stars Holly Robinson Peete, from 21 Jump Street fame. In this film, she portrays Michelle Toussaint, a news reporter who tries to work her way to the top, from a reporter, to anchorwoman. Her main objective, is trying to uncover her past, as well as a fearful mother who wants to prove her son is innocent from a scandal involving Kent Plaza. During that time, she also meets her beau, Anthony, played by D.B. Woodside. He becomes her cameraman in the beginning, but also along the way becomes her beau and lover. He tries to remind Michelle about the difference between the white and black side of the past, and realizes how much that is as a difference in life and her friends from the beginning. Not only does she get a beau, but also an assitant, Kellie S. Williams. You may remember her as Laura Winslow from the ABC then CBS sitcom, Family Matters. Her assitant is a little bit cocky, but really detemined to get it right. Along the way, Michelle also uncovers that Anthony's uncle is also a part of the drug dealing in Kent Plaza, played by Michael Warren. His character was tough, but also mentioned that he did the drug dealing, to get the money to put Anthony through College, and a future. He knows that well from the beginning, as a cocky well-minded businessman, but gets caught along the way at the latter point.

All that I can say is that this is one of the best movies I've ever seen to come out in years. I loved it when it made it to the airwaves on BET, and I still love it now. I really don't think a lot of people will look toward this film, unless it hits the Box Office, but I think it is an incredible movie. I just hope that BET doesn't try to stop airing made for TV films like this one. It is one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Dramatric.......2003-09-24

I loved this movie. Funny, Cute, and Dramatic. Another great BET Movie. Way to go BET.

--Alan E. Rapp

Description

Arresting tale of apocalyptic excitement as a future cop in a post-nuclear wasteland seeks revenge against the roving outlaw gang that killed his wife and daughter.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mad Max.......2007-02-13

Please make clear in the presentation of films if they only could be played in american format.
