Beginning precisely where Rocky left off, this surprisingly effective 1979 sequel takes the saga of Rocky Balboa to its logical next step, as the palooka turned public idol and media darling returns to his "normal" life in Philadelphia with his bride, Adrian (Talia Shire), and some degree of material comfort. He needs to find a job, but boxing champ Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) is challenging Rocky to a lucrative rematch, and despite his doctor's warning against future boxing, Rocky can't resist. Defying the odds that most sequels can't live up to their originals, this one doesn't pack all the punch that Rocky did, but it takes us further into the lives of its now familiar and beloved characters, and Stallone (as director and star) gives us another rousing finale in the ring. Do you really need to know who wins? --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show.......2007-05-24

Old time favorite cartoons - with an edge of adult humour.

5 out of 5 stars Wanna see me pull a rabbit outta my hat?.......2007-05-09

When Rocky & Bullwinkle first aired on network television, I was young enought that I didn't understand the idea of episodic story-telling. --Which really is just as well since R&B's cliff hanger story format tended to stretch a 3 minute story to half a season's worth of shows.

It was only upon watching the full prime-time shows stuck end to end on DVD that I realized that one cliff-hanger did actually lead to the next episode. I just thought it was a bunch of disconnected silly scenes with silly questions and puns used to end an otherwise unending series of gags.

Silly me! It all makes sense now!

And in spite of the frozen background art and clunky animation, R&B are a pleasure to watch and re-watch. The real star of these shows is the writing. It's smart, clever, genuinly witty -- and full of grown-up jokes that match the kid-aged jokes laugh for laugh.

The Fractured Fairy Tales, Mr. KNow-It-All segments, Dudley Do-Right (who has a horse that's more handsome than he is) and Snidley Whiplash, Aesop's (really funny) Fables and their dubious "moral to the story" jokes, the "Way-Back" time machine's history lessons, and the cold war spy vs. spy characters are as sharp and sharp-tongued as they ever were.

And sharper for me now that I'm old enough to follow the plot.

All 3 seasons are as bright and refreshing as their first run on television. Thank heaven for DVDs! Even the nonsense lead-ins to commercials are here -- great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars rocky and bulllwinkle 3d season.......2007-01-04

This is an excellent collection with very good quality reproduction and sound. Well worth it for the true fan and the novice as well.

5 out of 5 stars any word on release of season 4 and 5?.......2007-01-01

Love this show and want to finish my collection but I'm turning old and gray just waiting for season 4 to be released.

Come On! Release, Release, Release...

5 out of 5 stars May the Pun be with You.......2006-01-21

The puns are punnier and the stories are zanier as Rocky and Bullwinkle enter their fun filled third season. It consists of 33 episodes with everyone's favorite animated moose and squirrel as well as their friends and enemies.

The central focus of the show is the continuing exploits of Rocky the Flying Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose. Each episode features two segments of the current serialized story, and there are four of them this time around.

Missouri Mish Mash finds Bullwinkle and Rocky caught in the middle of a feud being run by Boris Badenov, their arch nemesis. However, when Bullwinkle finds a special hat, things really start to get interesting.

Lazy Jay Ranch finds our heroes moving to Wyoming after they buy a ranch. Turns out it's a worm ranch, and Boris has plans of his own for those worms.

The Three Moosketeers brings our heroes to the country of Applesauce Lorraine after the rightful king is replaced by the scheming Francois Villain. (Something tells me he's a bad guy.) Of interest, this is the first Rocky and Bullwinkle story to not feature Boris and his sidekick Natasha Fatale.

Topsy Turvy World finds the world's axis shifting. With the new North Pole on the Equator, it's up to Rocky and Bullwinkle to right the world before Boris gives Santa a bad name.

Of course, each episode also includes several special features. Either a Fractured Fairy Tale or an Aesop and Son (a fable like you've never heard before), Bullwinkle's Corner (poetry and nursery rhymes for laughs) or Mr. Know-it-All (Bullwinkle shows us how NOT to do something), and Peabody's Improbably History (a dog makes sure history goes as recorded) or Dudley Do-Right (a spoof of melodramas set in Canada.)

These shows are absolutely hysterical, if you can stand a good pun. The writers seem to be at the top of their game, with the puns coming so fast you just might miss one. It breaks all the rules of TV with the characters often talking directly to the audience or making references to their TV show, but it only adds to the laughter. While kids will enjoy watching, it's the adults that will get the word play and the now dated historical references.

Of course, being an animated show from the 60's means the animation isn't up to today's standards. Still, it does a good job of getting the story across and holds up to some of today's TV animation.

I was disappointed to recognize many of the Bullwinkle's Corner and Mr. Know-it-All segments this time around. They are recycled from earlier seasons. I don't know why this is, but I hope the fourth season contains new material.

This set consists of four single sided DVD's. The picture and sound are great, although the occasional bit of dust or grain does betray the show's age. Unfortunately, Sony still sees a need to include the clear R&B logo in the lower right hand corner for a minute of each segment. I hardly notice, but when I do it is annoying.

The set this time has a circus theme to the box, booklet, and menus. The booklet contains a funny biography of villains Boris and Natasha. Also this time around, the booklet contains information on the Bullwinkle's Corner and Mr. Know-it-All segments, something that's been missing in previous sets.

Extras are light. They include some third season intros from the Bullwinkle puppet (including the infamous one where he tells kids to rip off their TV's knobs so they won't miss the next episode), a preview of the next season, and some "best of" moments from the season.

While the extras aren't a reason to buy the set, the shows themselves are still as punny as they were over forty years ago. Anyone with a fond memory of the show and a strong constitution for puns will love it.

Now here's something you don't see everyday, Chauncey. It's the complete first season of one of television's smartest, savviest, and most subversively funny animated series, ranked by TV Guide as one of the top 50 series of all time. Like the animators at Warner Bros.' Termite Terrace (birthplace of Porky, Daffy, and Bugs), producer Jay Ward, his partner Bill Scott (the voice of Bullwinkle), and the cracked writing staff did not write down to children. The dialogue is witty and sharply satiric. Characters break the "fourth wall" between the screen and the audience. They make sly references to the show's creators and the television network. They hurl barbs of mass destruction at Washington, D.C. politicians. And then there are the godawful puns. This four-disc set contains the series' first two serial adventures. "Jet Fuel Formula" is a cold war-era blast, as Rocky (voiced by June Foray, the Queen of Cartoons) and Bullwinkle frantically race to re-create a rocket fuel recipe (actually Grandma Bullwinkle's recipe for mooseberry fudge cake), while being menaced by those no-goodniks Boris Badenov and femme fatale Natasha. "Box Top Robbery" reveals that the basis for the world's economy is not gold and silver, but cereal box tops.

Linking these cliffhanging episodes are such hilarious segments as "Fractured Fairy Tales," which upend familiar storybook favorites (Red Riding Hood, for example, is a predatory fur merchant after the unwitting wolf), "Mr. Peabody," the canine genius who travels through time in the company of his boy, Sherman, and forthright Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties, who must contend with his own horse for the affections of sweet Nell. Bullwinkle gets extra credits as Mr. Know-It-All and as the host of Poetry Corner. And watch him pull a rabbit out of his hat! These cartoons are as fresh and funny as when they first aired more than four decades ago. Boomer-era adults will be amazed at the jokes that no doubt soared over their heads as children. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars Funnier now than 40 years ago.......2007-03-21

The purists can argue the merits of the changes until they're blue in the face, I've been too busy laughing my tush off to worry about it.

The irreverent humor and biting political commentary, both of which have only improved with age make this more fun for me than it is for my 8 y/o who thinks Rocky and Bullwinkle are the greatest animation on the planet.

5 out of 5 stars rocky and bullwinkle joy.......2007-01-12

This is one of the finest DVD set that I have. The obscure references, the pun's, and the characters are some of the best of early sixties cartoons. One of the best features is that the episodes are shown complete as they were aired. Have already bought season two and am planning on buying season three as soon as I get done with season one. Buy and enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends - complete first season .......2007-01-11

PURCHASED THIS FILM FOR MY BROTHER-IN LAW WHO IS A BIG FAN OF ROCKY & BULLWINKLE. WE SAT AND WATCHED IT WITH HIM AND ENJOYED THE SHOWS AS WELL AS THE MEMORIES. WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE PURCHASE OF THE SECOND SEASON LATER ON. IT GIVES A LOT OF PLEASURE TO MY BROTHER-IN LAW AS WELL AS MY FAMILY.

4 out of 5 stars Same old Moose and Squirrel.......2006-10-30

I purchased this set as a gift for my husband. It's a great way to watch all of the old cartoons we both watched as children. We are second generation fans, and being so neither of us realized there is a story line to follow with each of the short skits. It's been wonderful watching them in the order they were made and understanding the whole story. Plus, the humor is even more interesting now that we are older and understand some of the political implications and satire we missed as kids. Two thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars This was an enjoyable purchase........2006-10-28

I do not have much to say other than this was a great purchase. I got this dvd set on a whim because I really liked the way the packaging looked. I was not that familiar with R&B but I knew enough. After watching all of the episodes I was amazed, this is a great show and I would recommend it for anyone! Plus the packaging is really nice :^) I have season two and plan to begin watching it as soon as I can. Buy this set if you love clever stories and dialogue with wonderfully bad animation. That sounds cheesy but this is fun cheese.

Set your WABAC machine for 1960, and the further misadventures of Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose, the most illustrious citizens of Frostbite Falls, MN (population: 48; and that's during the summer rush). This four-disc set contains seven full-length serials, several of which loom large in the Rocky & Bullwinkle canon, including "Upsidasium," "Metal Munching Mice," and "Greenpernt Oogle," with the rare, reclusive oogle bird (sorry, you'll have to wait until the release of season 3 for the Kirwood Derby).

Perhaps emboldened by what they were able to get away with in season 1, producer Jay Ward, writer and the voice of Bullwinkle Bill Scott, Queen of Cartoons June Foray, "and a host of others," gleefully further broke with television convention. Rocky & Bullwinkle was at once very silly (for the kids) and slyly satirical (for mom and dad). Characters broke the fourth wall ("Don't look at me," a villain insists at one point, "I'm not giving up the plot"). Corporate America (television executives in particular) was mocked. In "Metal Munching Mice," news that robotic rodents are devouring television antennae causes panic when it is realized that the public are unable to watch commercials. And then there are the subversively funny "Fractured Fairy Tales," in which Puss 'n Boots gets skinned, Red Riding Hood is devoured, and no one lives happily ever after, and the time-travel adventures of cultured canine Mr. Peabody and his boy Sherman, in which historical figures are revealed to be boobs. Just for laughs, there is the faux melodrama of forthright Mounty Dudley Do-Right, and the Bullwinkle segments, "Bullwinkle's Corner" and "Mr. Know It All." Still crazy after all these years, Rocky & Bullwinklerises like the anti-gravity Upsidasium above mere nostalgia. Like The Simpsons, this series rewards viewers who pay attention, and invites repeat viewings to catch all the jokes you missed. --Donald Liebenson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Be proud, fellow baby-boomers!.......2007-06-29

Even in this age of tremendous animation geared specifically not for children, (Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy, etc. . . .) The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show still has to be rated as one of the all time great adult cartoons. Creator and master-mind Jay Ward had a unique sense of humor that was two-part silly surrealism and one part subtle-yet-caustic sarcasm. He did not seem capable of writing down to a cartoon audience, and he always assumed everyone got the joke (and, amazingly enough, tons of baby boomers did, along with their Korean-War generation parents).

The animation was, to be kind, stylized (not even quite as good as the "limited animation" of the great Hanna-Barbara cartoons of the 1960's), but what these cartoons lacked in lush graphics and great backgrounds, they more than made up for in great comic writing and imagination. Season Two had some of the most memorable flights of brilliance like "Metal Munching Mice" - a 16-episode jaunt that had six-foot metal "moon mice" bent on destroying America by devouring television antennas. "Upsidasium," another season-two classic, spanned a whopping 36 episodes and revolved around the anti-gravity metal, Upsidasium, sought after by all governments of the world (a tremendous and playful riff on the nuclear paranoia of the late 1950's and early 1960's). And what baby boomer didn't love all the additional special features ("And now here's something we hope you really like.") like Fractured Fairy Tales, Dudley Do-Right, Aesop's Fables, and (my personal favorite) Peabody's Improbable History.

Yet, finally, what made these cartoons historic in their greatness was the staggering alignment of vocal talent. Bill Scott was the voice of Bullwinkle and June Foray (the all time champ of female voice actors) supplied the voice for not only Rocky but also for Natasha, Nell Fenwick, and many and many additional voices. Then there was the great Paul Frees doing Boris, Captain Peachfuzz, Cloyd the Moon Man, and Inspector Fenwick.

The list goes on: Hans Conried (Snidely Whiplash), Walter Tetley (Sherman), Charles Ruggles (Aesop), and Jullie Bennett (all the odd female voices in Fractured Fairy Tales that Foray didn't do, like The Fisherman's Wife). This show even had the greatest vocal talent ever, Daws Butler, on board doing the voice of Aesop Jr. in the Aesop`s Fables feature.

All in all, the greatest alignment of vocal talent ever assembled. Do not miss it. Any season of this classic television treasure will do. --- Mykal Banta

5 out of 5 stars Rife with happy nostalgic, wholesome fun.......2007-03-14

These DVDs are of excellent quality and value, hours and hours of the pun and double entendre filled humor this truly innovative kids' program brought to early TV audiences. I watched the shows 50 years ago and enjoy them as much today as my parents did then. Why, you ask? The humor was bi-level in age appeal. Kids enjoyed the good guy-bad guy antics of Rocky and Bullwinkle vs. Boris and Natasha while parents reveled in the creative, wholesome and usually silly parables. The additional episodes of Fractured Fairy Tales, Dudley Do-right of the Mounties, Mr. Peabody and Sherman (A Dog and His Boy), who time travel to experience improbable history lessons make this collection priceless. You'll definitely want the first season as well.

5 out of 5 stars Rocky and Bullwinkle Season 2 and 3 .......2006-11-04

I just missed seeing them since the 70's and 80's when I loved every week sitting in front of the TV waiting to see what happened next. It is a Great DVD to revisit your Childhood. And even good clean Cartoons for kids today instead of all the Viloince and Rudeness they seem to play. Hope everyone young and old checks these DVD's out they are great for the Decade they were made.

5 out of 5 stars Nothin up my sleeve.......2006-04-17

These old R & B cartoons are the best. The DVD's are very clear and have all the episodes in order. Jay ward was at his best here. I wish they would release his other stuff on DVD like george of the jungle with super chicken and tom slick. I would buy those as quick as I did the R & B seasons. I also have season 3 and its great too. Can't wait for season 4. Come on guys give us george of the jungle too.

For Steele's sophomore year, Murphy and Bernice are out and Mildred Krebs (Emmy-magnet Doris Roberts) is in. She gets pulled into the orbit of private investigators Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) and Remington Steele (Pierce Brosnan) when she audits their agency in the two-part season opener ("Steele Away With Me"). Krebs follows the duo to Acapulco, where she helps with a case, and ends up abandoning the IRS for the more glamorous world of detective work. Other changes include a revamped title sequence and a new loft for Holt when a failed assassination attempt results in the destruction of her home ("Red Holt Steele").

While Krebs represents a welcome addition, wily quick change artist Major Descoine (Guy Boyd), who is introduced a few episodes later ("Steele Framed"), is another matter. He'll get away the first time only to return towards the end of the season ("Elegy in Steele") to bedevil Holt and Steele again (much like the slippery Murdoc in producer Lee David Zlotoff's MacGyver). As usual, Steele continues to derive mystery-solving inspiration from cinema classics like Casablanca ("Red Holt Steele") and The Man Who Knew Too Much ("Steele Sweet on You"). Romance between the two continues, as well, but the detectives are too professional to rush anything.

The second season also provides Holt with more clues about Steele's mysterious past, like his stints as "The Kilkenny Kid" ("Steele Knuckles and Glass Jaws") and "The Great Savini" ("High Flying Steele"). As for Steele, he gains a slick new means of transportation: a 1936 Auburn Speedster ("Love Among the Steele"). Guest stars include future primetime staples Delta Burke and Jane Kaczmarek ("Altared Steele"), Jeffrey "Principal Rooney" Jones ("A Steele at Any Price"), and (briefly) Miguel Sandoval ("Steele Eligible"), who will go on to work with writer/producer Glenn Gordon Caron (Moonlighting) on Medium. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

1 out of 5 stars Great show, Bad dvd.......2007-03-28

This is my worst experience ever with dvd. Remington Steele season 1 was fine. Then I guess the dvd company decided to go cheap because season 2 (and 3, I understand) are very bad. I had to receive and return 6 or 7 sets of season 2 before I got one that worked. Every set had 1 or 2, or more discs that were flawed in production and would not play (stalled, pixellated, etc.). I watch a lot of dvds and I have several players, so this is definitely a case of a bad production run. Since Amazon absorbs the shipping for all the returns and replacements, they should put some pressure on the dvd companies to have just a minimum of quality control. If you want to collect this show, count on having to go back and forth A LOT before you get ones that work. Good luck!

4 out of 5 stars Remington Steele - Season Two.......2007-03-08

OK, Remington Steele isn't great drama or fantastic special effects, but I love the quirky humor and the sparring (and sparks) between the characters played by Pierce Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist. I felt that "Mildred" added a lot to the office repartee. The casting of the visiting stars, bad guys and clients, made for entertaining variety. I loved watching the show when it ran on TV, but missed a lot of episodes. I am delighted to have the opportunity to see the series "in order" at my convenience, when I can take the time to watch the behind the scenes featurette and character profile. It is the sort of entertainment I enjoy when I'm kicking back and doing nothing in particular and love it that way.

4 out of 5 stars the year of cast changes.......2007-01-26

big cast changes marked season 2 as all the old supporting cast were dropped. still, laura and remington carried on without missing a beat in this excellent comedy/mystery series.

2 out of 5 stars I love the SHOW, the DVD's are another story!.......2006-09-15

Hello
I won't sell you on the show-it's one of my favorites, and you can read other's opinions there. What I will say is that we are having a horrible time finding copies that play without scattering immages, or freezing up the player. So far we've had to return episode one 2 times (one time it came with 2 identical discs (i.e one disc one, two discs two, and one disc 4), we've had to return season 2 and 3 for reasons that they're not playable. It will play fine on one disc, then the next disc it crashes, pixilates, or won't load at all. We don't have this problem with ANY other movies. SO, beware, watch ALL the episodes before you put it on your shelf, and be prepared (and if you are a true fan, you will do this) to keep on trying until all the discs WORK. All that I can figure is that they weren't sure they'd sell (big mistake) and made them CHEAP. What a shame.
GOOD LUCK!

5 out of 5 stars Season 2 blazes ahead and makes Season 1 look like nothing!.......2006-08-26

Season 2 of this fantastic 80s detective series brings a new feel to the show. Most notably, Murphy and Bernice Fox are gone, and replaced by Doris Roberts (now known more for playing Marie Barone on EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND). It is likely that the writers determined that Murphy was leading the show into "love triangle" territory in Season 1, and that fans just wanted Remington and Laura to be together without the complications. At the same time, Bernice Fox seemed to serve no purpose beyond appearing at the desk whenever the lobby was shown. So, they combined the two into Ms. Krebs, a character who could fill the role of secretary, while also occasionally appearing outside the office without posing a threat to the Steele/Holt relationship. While Murph and Fox are missed, Doris Roberts shines in the role, especially in the later seasons.

Unfortunately, the season begins with an hour-and-a-half episode that is almost a chore to sit through. In a seeming attempt to bring to mind the James Bond feel of exotic locations, the composer even went so far as to score a theme for the action scenes that is so obviously a combination of the original Bond Theme and the melody of FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. This season opener is the beginning of the "exotic locale" episodes, and increasingly over the next three seasons we would see the team travel to Mexico, Malta, Britain, Ireland . . . I never really cared for these episodes. I preferred them staying in LA with the pretty night ligths and almost noirish atmosphere.

At any rate, things pick up in the second episode as Laura comes under personal attack so unrelenting, that it costs her a house! A scene midway with Laura staring blankly at the burning rubble as she musters the strength to carry on is an early performance high for the fantastic Stephanie Zimbalist.

Brosnan himself would shine a few episodes later when framed for a murder he didn't commit. This episode inroduces a recurring character who proves to be quite a foil to the pair.

Also introduced this season is the vintage Auburn automobile, which would get an entire episode devoted to its own mystery before becoming a regular fixture on the show.

All told, Season 2 manages to grow the potential of the show beyond the "mystery of the week" that was Season 1. We really get to explore with more depth what makes both characters work - and with Murphy out of the way, Steele is free to become a little more macho and self-assured. But do not worry - there is still enough of the slightly-bumbling Cary Grant style that makes him so lovable!

My only real complaint with this season is that the writers never really seemed to be clear on where the "relationship" between the two was headed. They might have a major romance scene in one episode, then have NO romance for a stretch of four or five - and then suddenly be close again. After awhile, the relationship becomes frankly boring, and the stories take center stage.

However, it is still great TV, and another well-produced DVD set for the money. As before, the handful of 10-minute documentary shorts are spread throughout the four discs, and are nostalgiac and quick paced so as to be enjoyed without being overlong.

All told, this is a worthy set - and no, I'm not going to say it's a STEELE at any price! That's getting old now!!

For its third year, the Remington Steele Detective Agency decides to take a well-deserved rest on the French Riviera (season premiere "Steele at It"). Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) has a hidden agenda. She's hoping to strengthen her relationship with Steele (Pierce Brosnan), but they soon get caught up in a To Catch a Thief-styled caper. In an attempt to help a friend, Steele briefly returns to his criminal origins and swipes a jewel-encrusted dagger (which he was intending to return), but it takes Laura to extract him--and loyal assistant Mildred Krebs (Doris Roberts)--from the chaos that ensues. After that fiasco, the private eyes decide not to mix business with pleasure--despite the obvious attraction between them. So the romance cools a bit, but the most highly-rated season heats up with more exotic locales (and a greater emphasis on humor). After France, the trio travels to Malta ("Maltese Steele," "Puzzled Steele"), Las Vegas ("Diced Steele"), and Brosnan's native Ireland ("Steele Your Heart Away"). As with the second year, there's a new title sequence (a James Bond-type graphic replaces the movie house scenario). Naturally, some things remain the same, such as Steele's frequent film references, i.e. The Thin Man ("Gourmet Steele"), Arsenic and Old Lace ("Let's Steele a Plot"), and The Producers ("Springtime for Steele").

Guests during the 1984-1985 season, include Ray Wise ("A Pocketful of Steele"), John Larroquette ("Breath of Steele'), Geena Davis and Jean Smart ("Steele in the Chips," co-written by Zimbalist), and Zimbalist's father, Ephrem, as Steele's old pal, Daniel Chalmers ("Blue Blooded Steele"). Several living legends also drop by, like Yankee greats Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford ("Second Base Steele") and the glittering Hollywood trio of Dorothy Lamour, Virginia Mayo, and Lloyd Nolan (fan favorite "Cast in Steele"). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Great show.......2007-02-14

This a great show, for mystery lovers and for fans of Pierce Bronson.

2 out of 5 stars replaced MUSIC.......2007-02-11

I love Remington Steele, and was very upset to find they'd left out the original Tony Bennett songs in the episode of "Steele Trying". That's the San Francisco episode. I also read that some of the music in other episodes has changed, but I didn't notice it myself. Steele Trying was incredible in its original airing and the A&E reruns, expressions all timed to match the music, now its nothing special and occasionally the expressions seem stupid as they are out of context. All of this said, I would still have bought these DVD's as it is still Remington Steele and many of the episodes are still great.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it Before.......2007-02-08

I really liked the series when it was originally on and now I can watch it as many times as I want. It's so much better than some of the shows on tv now that I'd rather watch this than most any on regular tv.

I looked high and low for this season. I never saw it in the stores. My wife is a real fanatuc for the show and Pierce Brosnan. I went to specialty stores and even tried to have it ordered. Amazon was the onlyu place I was able to find it. We are half way through and it is great.

The fourth season picks up where the third left off--with the disappearance of Remington Steele (Pierce Brosnan). As the two-parter ("Steel Searching") opens, Mildred Krebs (Doris Roberts) is in the dumps. Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) seems to be handling the loss of her associate well, but she's just as distraught as Mildred. Fortunately, they're able to track him down in London. That's the good news. The bad news is that Scotland Yard thinks he's a modern day Jack the Ripper. In this episode, Laura also clues Mildred in to the fact that "Remington Steele" is an assumed name and that the agency is actually her creation. Episodes of note include "Forged Steele," in which Steele gambles away the business, "Steele on the Air," in which Mildred becomes a radio sex therapist to solve the murder of a traffic reporter, and "Beg, Borrow or Steele," in which Holt and Steele are reported murdered. Among the fourth year guests are Lawrence Tierney ("Grappling Steele"), Terry O'Quinn ("Coffee, Tea or Steele"), and Frances Conroy ("Steele Hanging in There"). As for Steele's trademark movie references, they encompass North by Northwest ("Corn Fed Steele"), D.O.A. ("Premium Steele"), and Out of the Past ("Steele in the Spotlight").

Since NBC cancelled Remington Steele after the fourth year, the truncated fifth is often dismissed as a contractual obligation. When word got out that Brosnan was to be 007, renewed ratings justified a stay of execution (otherwise, he'd have donned the Bond duds sooner). At least Brosnan and Zimbalist weren't tied to a full season, but rather three two-hour movies. Most fans consider these episodes the weakest, because of the bickering, the bogus wedding, and Jack Scalia's meddling Tony Roselli. Still, they do tie up several loose ends, like the identity of Steele's father, in a tidy fashion. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic and Refreshing!.......2007-06-20

Pierce Brosnan has always been a favorite with me! I was 15 years old when this series came out and I would make sure my chores were all complete before it came on in the evening!

I bought ALL the seasons and have watched them twice since I received them (since Christmas). What's amazing is the dialoge is still "up to date!" With so many "old sitcoms and shows" the dialoge on some "80's" shows were cheezy and you end up asking yourself "Why in the world did I watch that?" Not so with the Remington Steele seasons. I love Doris Roberts Character "Mildred Krebs"... and of course, Laura was who I wanted to be when I grew up! On top of that... there is "Remmie". I have now got my 13 year old daughter started on these shows and she loves them!

I highly recommend them... for entertainment and just plain fun!

We now have all the Remington Steele TV - DVD's with this purchase. If you like good clean shows with a good story line and great repartee between the three principals, this is your series. It's a show the whole family can watch together w/ no cheap / dirty shots w/ poorly conceived humor. The writing team was untried until this series per some of the background, but they deliver variety of story lines, with plots designed to hold your interest. Light, appropriate humor, and very enjoyable viewing. Wish there were more shows like this today.

5 out of 5 stars Spoiler Warning!.......2007-03-30

Although I rate this a 5 because I just love this show, I wanted to warn any new viewers about a troublesome addition on the season 4 disk. Like most people buying these seasons I am a longtime fan who knows the ending already, however, my husband had never seen the show before. I was vastly enjoying introducing him to it in marathon syle sessions of viewing. As before, we watched the additional "making of" type spot, which in this case highlighted the guest stars they had on each episode. Again they interspersed commentary with clips from the show.... To my shock and dismay, they also played the clip revealing who Steele's father was! I had no chance to mute it for my husband's sake. Within moments one of the two most important plot points had been summarily revealed before we could even put the last disk in the machine. Talk about disapointment. So much for all the mystery they had built up over 4 seasons. For the most part I highly recomend this set, just wait till the end of the series before you watch the extras!

5 out of 5 stars TV series DVD.......2007-03-14

Any fan of Pierce Brosnan will be pleased to be able to see him in this DVD of his early work. He has only gotten better over the years. The chemistry between him and Stephanie Zimbalist really makes this series a classic that doesn't grow "old".

5 out of 5 stars Remington Steele--Glad to See It Again.......2007-02-21

My wife and I were dating and freshly married when this show was on, so there's a lot of nostalgia attached. What frequently happens is that we think back to a show we liked, we get it, and the show wasn't what we remembered.

Happily, this is not the case with Remington Steel. I find myself remembering just enough of each episode to keep the surprises. I love the interplay between Laura and Mr. Steele, and I love continual references to films.

Remington Steele's fusion of whodunit mystery and screwball comedy burst onto television in 1982. After struggling to get clients to hire a female detective, Laura Holt (sultry Stephanie Zimbalist) invents a fictional boss named Remington Steele, whose dashing manly name draws in work. But while protecting some South African jewels, Holt runs across a mysterious thief and con-man (an elfin, baby-faced Pierce Brosnan) whom her client assumes is the nonexistent Steele--and when the case is resolved, the accidental detective decides he likes the work and sticks around, infuriating Holt with his arrogant ways and tantalizing her with his dashing good looks. Murders may occur at a winery, an island sex club, or a college reunion, but just about every episode plunders plot elements from classic movies like Bringing Up Baby, The Third Man, and The Trouble with Harry (even the theme song was written by film composer Henry Mancini). The writers openly acknowledge this influence by having Steele use ideas he's lifted from movies to solve crimes. The constant allusions to old films should be annoying, but the show demonstrates such a rich affection for the classics that these tips of the hat actually mesh with Remington Steele's world.

Remington Steele has become best known as Brosnan's launching pad (he later become James Bond in GoldenEye and its sequels), but Zimbalist was every bit as crucial to the show's success; her mixture of glamor and toughness gives the show a distinctly adult sexiness and grounds Brosnan's boyish charm. The dialogue sometimes slipped from arch camp to sheer cheese, but even at its most ridiculous (say, a scene where Holt and Steele question homeless bums while dressed in formal evening wear) Remington Steele remains an eminently watchable show, thanks to zippy plotting and the chemistry between Zimbalist and Brosnan. Some episodes clearly implied that the pair had become intimate, yet that didn't defuse their attraction. Even when the stories became a bit silly, the mutual respect and desire between Holt and Steele never lost its sophistication. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Before he was Bond... he was Remington Steele...Private eye Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) grudgingly accepts a new partner when a mystery man (Pierce Brosnan) assumes the identity of her fictitious boss, Remington Steele. Together, the two battle crime as as their feelings for each other.

The pilot episode was cleverly done-explained how it all came to be. Zimbalist and Brosnan have a nice special manner with each other.

4 out of 5 stars very good. .......2007-05-08

I enjoyed reliving a very good series from the 80's. It brought back good memories of a show that you can watch without being embarrassed like unfortunately so many of today's do.

5 out of 5 stars 3 Generations.......2007-04-24

This TV series has been loved by three generations of women in my family. My mother who is now deceased would watch this show with me, when it first aired. When the reruns were aired, my daughter was old enough to enjoy it with my mother & I. It truly a "classic TV".

Enjoy watching it with someone you love.

5 out of 5 stars Great Show!.......2007-02-11

I have no complaints. I love the show and its all there.

4 out of 5 stars This show ages well.......2007-01-09

Unlike a lot of shows from the '80s and '90s, "Remington Steele" ages well for the most part. That's probably because it was trying to evoke timeless movie classics such as "The Thin Man" series. There are some definite low points: at least one episode is a tad hokey and the punning episode names get old. I bought this for my mother who loved the show when it first ran. She was initially a little skeptical, but after a couple of episodes she was hooked again.

Description

Funnyman Martin Short (INNERSPACE) plays an inept, klutzy bank robber who, on his first heist, grabs Nick Nolte (DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS, 48 HRS.) as a hostage. Nolte plays a notorious ex-con who is trying to go sraight, so naturally, no one believes he's innocent or Short guilty, forcing the mismatched pair to become reluctant partners in crime. Add to the mix-up Short's adorable six-year-old daughter who desperately tries to keep this very odd couple together on a hilarious wheel-screeching run for the Canadian border! There's no escaping laughers with miles of slapstick humor and nonstop adventure in this box office winner!

1 out of 5 stars Three Fugitives,83hours til dawn and alias........2006-03-10

Iam not at all happy that i could not watch this product the three fugitives and 83 hours til dawn and am unable to buy this product in Australia. I think it suck that dvds have region departments and can only be watched in some countries People should be able to buy a product and be able to watch it. The sooner a dvd comes out that is able to be watched in all countries the better.

5 out of 5 stars Master OF The rare LASERDISCs Movies........2005-07-10

Description

Sex/Life in L.A. 2: Cycles of Porn is a revealing glimpse into a world where sex, art and business collide in the City of Angels. It's been seven years since the filmmaker's first documentary portrait, and director Jochen Hick is checking in with some of his previous subjects: Adult film stars Kevin Kramer, Cole Tucker and Matt Bradshaw. But sexuality is constantly evolving, and styles, tastes and even new technology are providing a new supply of up-and-coming talent. Hick deftly explores a culture in which young men occupy a house outfitted with webcams for a sexy chat site, and nomad filmmakers rove the country looking for impromptu stars of their condom-free "bareback films." The dreams, disappointments and unwavering reality of the gay adult industry are all opened up with insight and humor in this riveting film that made festival audiences around the world cheer.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Porn life.......2007-03-09

Well, it's about guys who make their living through sex. Either by internet, movies, etc. Interesting, but for renting only. A few nudity scenes.

3 out of 5 stars A Glimpse Into The World Of Porn.......2006-01-23

Sex/Life in L.A. 2: Cycles of Porn is a fascinating look into the world of porn that is a follow up to Jochen Hick's 1998 Sex/Life in L.A. Hick revisits Kevin Kramer, Cole Tucker, Matt Bradshaw, and finds some new porn stars, or at least wannabes along the way. Although I found it to be quite intriguing it really only touches the surface and it left me wanting more. The film begins with a look behind the scenes at Chi Chi LaRue's "Live and Raw Hotel", a hotel filled with webcams and host to a bevy of boys, filming every moment for the world to see. Focusing on the trials and tribulations of the boys we follow their ups and downs, dreams and desires. More seasoned veterans like Matt Bradshaw, Cole Tucker, and Kevin Kramer are featured and we get a glimpse into where they are now. Surprisingly Cole Tucker is not like his onscreen persona and it was nice to see what a down to earth guy he was, much like the rest of them. A controversial subject is touched upon with the director of bareback videos and his search across country via a motor home in the search of new stars. Sex parties, drugs, and more sex round out the film that just begins to scrape the surface but is worth a look nonetheless. Hopefully Hick won't let so much time go by before he revisits this industry and let's hope he digs a bit deeper.
