Tom Berenger stars as an amnesiac who investigates his life before a car wreck took his memory, and finds that things were not all they should have been. The promising mystery gets less interesting as the script becomes more perfunctorily complicated, and a crucial plot twist toward the end throws the story onto a different track rather than letting the existing one grow richer through better characters. People don't count as much as surprises do in this film, so in that sense Shattered is a passable potboiler, no more and no less. Wolfgang Petersen (In the Line of Fire) capably directs, but even he can't work depth into the margins. Solid supporting performances from Greta Scacchi, Bob Hoskins, and Joanne Whalley-Kilmer. --Tom Keogh

Shattered Glass is the best film about journalism since All the President's Men. If that seems like lofty praise, consider this: In telling the true story of fallen journalist and pathological liar Stephen Glass, writer-director Billy Ray had to thoroughly and believably demonstrate how Glass--played in a pitch-perfect performance by Hayden Christensen--could single-handedly betray the trust of vigilant editors, writers, fact-checkers, and copyeditors while he falsified numerous highly praised articles as a hot, seemingly gifted reporter for The New Republic magazine in the late 1990s. Making an assured directorial debut, Ray brilliantly explores the delicate office politics that allowed for Glass's ongoing deception, which was diligently exposed by a reporter (Steve Zahn) from Forbes Online Tool, thus toppling Glass's tower of lies and setting a noble precedent for online journalism. From Glass's ingratiating psychopathology to the anguish of TNR's then-unpopular editor (Peter Sarsgaard) as he discovers the extent of Glass's wrongdoing, Shattered Glass is a riveting, perfectly cast study of ambition gone sour, countered by the nobility of respectable journalists in the wake of a worst-case scenario. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A couple of days with a liar.......2007-06-27

I have showed this movie to two of my high school classes for several years now, and they are riveted to it. It provides a little bit of real-life journalism, but basically includes what not to do. It serves as a nice springboard to several ethical issues discussions. The 60 Minutes interview afterwards is a nice feature, too.

4 out of 5 stars Investigating the Investigative Journalist.......2007-06-17

This is an absorbing account of how a failure of journalistic ethics at "The New Republic" magazine was uncovered. It is like a serious version of "The Office," with a number of people eventually reaching beyond their individual workspace cubicles to collaborate on finding out whether the fascinating stories that Stephen Glass submitted to the magazine were fact or merely fictions he invented to advance his career as a writer.

There is a lot of suspense in this movie. Like me, you may find yourself holding your breath, waiting to see if a given website that Glass cites as a reference to substantiate the factuality of his story - actually exists. And in those tense moments, you are not sure what you are hoping, where your sympathies should lie. The times you cheated on school exams or failed to report something on your income tax form may flash through your mind.

So the film centers on detective work, but not the kind of detective work that Sherlock Holmes would readily recognize. It involves tracking elusive sources through cyberspace, through re-routed and hand-off websites, through drop-box email addresses.

The presumption is that if Glass' stories are fictitious, he has committed the ultimate journalistic transgression. The viewer is left with no alternative but to agree with that strict standard. But the movie might have left just the least little bit of wiggle-space for an advocate of leniency. After all, ""The New Republic" is a magazine of feature stories written from a definite personal point of view. It does not deal in hard news.

An acquaintance of mine once posed as a French woman to entice a man she was interested in. She plowed through the deception with such saucy aplomb that at the end of the date, the man winked and said, "If you aren't French, you should be." Although ultimately I suppose we do have to enforce strict standards of veracity in journalism - it's just that wink I miss in this movie.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Movie .......2007-04-09

I just finished watching this movie for what has to be the 10th time and I'm sttill blown away by it. The power of the film is based in how much you want to like Stephen Glass played by Hayden Christiansen. The desperation and intensity of the performance is a wonder. In fact, the entire cast is a joy to watch from Stephen Zahn finally revealing himself as something other than a nerd to Hak Azaria being serious to Sargaard stepping forward and out of the shadow of his sidekick character status.

As a study of codependency gone over the edge, this film is incredible and even the score offers a unique combination of range and consistency.

The DVD also offers commentary by the director and Chuck Lane, the TNR editor who along with Forbes exposed Glass. The commentary allows this movie to step beyond Hollywood history to being actual history.

On a final note, it's interesting that Tom Cruise is an executive producer of this film. Whatever his beliefs and personal life, as an executive producer he had a hand in bringing this brilliant film to the screen and it is for contributions like this, as much as his acting, he deserves consideration.

4 out of 5 stars SERIAL LIAR.......2007-04-08

SHATTERED GLASS was the first movie written and directed by Billy Ray, a screenwriter who wrote or co-wrote, among others, the screenplay of Flightplan (Widescreen Edition) and Suspect Zero (Widescreen Edition). As though SHATTERED GLASS is based on a true story, the movie is more the portrait of a man than the account of a [...] that shook the small world of journalism.

SHATTERED GLASS is told in a flashback mode by Stephen Glass, the journalist a la mode in 1998. Stephen explains to a class of students how to write a good article. As we watch on the screen the events described by Stephen Glass, the director squeezes, at first discreetly, but then more and more often, the film of what had really happened to Stephen Glass. The split between these two narrations creates a discomfort in the viewer's mind as we start to understand that Stephen Glass could be a mythomaniac. And, thanks to the performance of Hayden Christensen and the director's vision, we will never know, or rather want to know, whether Stephen Glass was a brilliant crook or simply a sly psychopath who managed to cheat on dozens of so-called professionals.

A DVD zone who cares if it's real or not.

5 out of 5 stars He Should Have Been a Novelist.......2007-03-04

Stephen Glass was an up-and-coming journalist who created this world of fiction in the articles that he wrote for The New Republic. He was an aspiring journalist who wanted too much too soon. What got him in trouble was the final article on a hacker's convention. There was no convention and there is no possible way that hackers are going to congregate in public for a convention!
We see Stephen as outgoing and cordial. He is full of life talking to his colleagues about what he's doing. However, a new editor steps in and finds that something isn't right about the stories that Glass writes and gets to the bottom of things which causes Stephen to crack. When he is finally exposed for the person he is, there is resentment.
Stephen Glass has left some bitterness among his former friends and colleagues. He is no longer in the journalism field but it hasn't stopped him from writing a fictional novel The Fabulist. He was better off writing fiction than covering stories.
Then again, journalism hasn't always been about the truth. There has been and still is libel and slander. News publications get sued or even shut down because of false allegations and plagiarism.
I learned that Glass was a fact checker for Ruth Shalit who was exposed for plagiarismm at The New Republic. This is a classic case of the blind leading the blind.
Whatever Stephen Glass is doing for himself, I hope he just don't mess it up again!

5 out of 5 stars suspence.......2007-04-10

the first time i saw this movie it was intriging and full of suspence after so many years i finally found it threw Amazon and i had to purchase it because i like to see them constantly because the more you see of it you always find something new.

2 out of 5 stars Has good twists and turns but the acting is bad.......2006-06-06

A typically early 90's thriller like Basic Instinct, Fatel Attractiona nd Indecient Praposel. This film works in soem levels and then falls in more levels. The good parts in the film is the twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The bad stuff is the terriable acting from everyone in the film. It's not entirelly bad and worth to see for the twist and turns but that's it.

4 out of 5 stars WHO AM I?.......2006-03-28

SHATTERED is Wolfgang Petersen doing Brian DePalma doing Alfred Hitchcock and as a mystery/thriller, it has some intriguing moments. Tom Berenger stars as David Merrick, a wealthy businessman who is in a horrible car crash, needs plastic surgery and has amnesia to boot. Greta Scacchi is his devoted wife who tries to nurse him back to health and help him remember his past. Bob Hoskins shines as a pet store owner/private investigator who also tries to piece the puzzle together. All is not as it seems though; is Scacchi trying to kill her husband? Is she having an affair with a handsome stranger? Is Corbin Bernsen wearing a toupee?
The movie keeps your interest and although the twist at the end is fairly obvious, it does keep you guessing.

5 out of 5 stars It thrills pretty much.......2005-12-17

A thriller based on a loss of memory after a car accident. Banal. That poor man who is trying to know what happened and is feeling that something is not what it should be, has it all wrong from the very start and is the prisoner of the real killer who is ready to do anything to keep him. But is the loss of memory hiding the past of the man or the past of the murderer ? That is the question and that's where the plot is as thick as smog. Till the very last minute, or nearly, there is no hope for you to know the truth and when you finally know it it becomes so hectic on the screen that you do not even have the power and energy to scream, and scream you should.

2 out of 5 stars predictable thriller.......2005-09-29

this a "mystery-triller" starring tom berenger, gretta scacchi, corbin bernsen, joanne whalley-kilmer and bob hoskins,it's the story of a couple who for some reason plunge off a cliff and survive.she falls out of the car early but he is trapped in and falls drastically, crashing all the way.she maintains a black and blue and a bruised arm, while he amazingly lives,at first leaving him in a coma, but more importantly leaving his face looking like hamburger.he eventually comes out of his coma to find that he has amnesia.later, after being nursed back to health and "falling in love with his wife all over again," he finds a roll of film of his wife having sex with another man.obviously this makes him question what really happened before the crash and he hires a private investigator to help him find the truth.
it sounds good and starts off as a pretty good thriller, but comes predictable fast.i knew the key 'mysteries' almost immediately and i'm sure that those who have seen hundreds of movies and law & order episodes will agree.eventhough it is predictable and the movie goes downhill at a certain point it does have some moments.i liked bob hoskins and his role especially but have no reason to ever see this again.

The video was too dated. I thought it was newer. I would not recommend it. I bought it to use with a subtance abuse group and they only watched about half of it and didn't want to see the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Shattered Spirits.......2003-04-23

This film depicts substance abuse, domestic violence, co-dependancy in the family. Very powerful, very accurate.

5 out of 5 stars Tough Love, straight up!.......2003-03-13

"Shattered Spirits" is the best movie I've ever seen in a High School Health Class.

Martin Sheen stars as an alcholic father, while M.I.F. Hall-of-Famer Melinda Dillon desperately tries to hold the family together in the wake of dad's inebriated rampages.

The film is pretty good (if vaguely TV-movie-ish), particularly when Martin Sheen tells his son that he's going into a bar to meet a buddy, and comes out six hours later! Was the "buddy" named Jack Daniels?

However, I did resent watching the movie a bit--I sat next to the class cutie, and we'd struck up a nice little in-class friendship. So for three days, the lights were off and we weren't allowed to talk. Thanks a lot!

Even so, it definitely opened up an important discussion about alcoholism. I have a weakness for Newcastle Brown Ale, but I try to remember the lesson in moderation that Martin Sheen taught me.

5 out of 5 stars This will sneak up on you!.......2002-02-07

This film was first shown on TV at the boomtime of recovery when Betty Ford was pushing for recovery for families affected by addiction. The story portrays a middleclass family hiding dad's (Sheen's) alcoholism and sliding down the slope of denial. The reactions of the family to crises and the roles they each fall into are so accurately done that the viewer can get way into his/her own alcoholic upbringing and pain before they are aware of it.
I have shown this at several gatherings and it never fails to shake some people up seriously. Kids are especially vulnerable in their teen years. But entire families can get very agitated during the viewing.
So I would recommend that anyone showing or viewing this film be prepared to deal with some extreme reactioons for several days afterwards. Don't just show this and send your guests home. Instead have a discussion and a followup trip to a meeting of Alateen, Al-Anon or AA.
BUT SHOW IT!

5 out of 5 stars Best movie ever made.......2007-01-01

I recently viewed this film with my mother. It is by far the greatest movie ever made. It displays a genuine commitment to bring to light issues regarding domestic violence and what can happen when the main characters wear eyeglasses that are 5 sizes too big for their faces. My fiance also saw the movie and could not believe that it went straight to video. We agree that multiple awards should have been won by this movie. What a picture.

5 out of 5 stars Suspenseful TV-Movie-of-the-Week.......2006-10-26

One of the better suspense television films that ABC produced back in the early '70s, "When Michael Calls" tells the story of a young boy named Michael who, after thought of being lost in a snowstorm some 10 years ago, makes pleading, almost spooky phone calls to his divorced Aunt Helen (played by Elizabeth Ashley). Michael Douglas plays her brother, a counselor at the local boys' home. Could this all be one big joke? Or has Michael returned for revenge? Spooky little chiller that has gained plenty of airplay on cable channels in the past 3 decades. Check it out.

3 out of 5 stars A delightful old chestnut.......2005-10-04

Oh sure, I was only a year old when this movie came out on ABC but it has periodically been re-aired on A&E every once in a blue moon. It was then that I watched it.

This is one of those wonderful ghost story movies that some of us were lucky enough to grow up with as children--short on the gore but long on the suspense and a decently developed storyline.

Originally, this movie was aired under the title "When Michael Calls" but inexplicably it has since been reissued on VHS and DVD under the title "Shattered Silence."

The only real issue I have with this DVD reissue is the poor transfer. The colors are badly washed out and faded, there is a bit of a synchronization problem with the audio/video in a few spots and the movie in general shows its age. But, with such a low price, it is hard to quibble over the quality control.

I think this would be an excellent candidate for a remake, much as "The Fog" recently has.

3 out of 5 stars Discover an old creeper........2005-07-24

"Auntie my Helen". Do you remember that phrase? If you dont then you didn't see this movie. The ABC Movie Of The Week title for this movie was "When Michael Calls". It's the story of a woman whos beseiged with phone calls from her long dead nephew. The boys voice on the phone is very eerie. It takes place in a seemingly small town where people start dieing mysteriously. Elizabeth Ashley plays the woman terrorized by the calls. "Auntie my Helen" is what the dead boy called his aunt when he was alive, which adds a weirdness to it all. Michael Douglas in his first movie roll acts surprisingly well(way better than some current stuff). His part has to be seen.Ben Gazzara is the loving Daddy and suspicious, pseudo-detective ex-husband to Ashley. A better than average TV movie of the early seventies in the tradition of the old 'who done it' mystery movies. As to the dvd quality: STINKS!. The picture and sound are awful. This is often the unexplainable case of old movies just being thrown onto a disc. I've seen this many times and I'm disgusted with it. It appears the movie is burned from an old tape onto the disc. WHY? The purpose of dvd is supposed to be superior picture and sound. The movie is not enhanced in any way and its a shame. Start writting to these companies who are just slapping the movies name on a box to make a buck. This movie is never broadcast on TV so your stuck with the poor quality. The picture appears slightly better on a LCD monitor played on a computer.

There are times when Raul Ruiz's maddening and mesmerizing film resembles a direct-to-video erotic thriller in which rampant clichés collide in scenes surreal in their straight-faced silliness. And there are moments when the fractured narrative and stylistic shards create a sophisticated study in alienation and disconnection. These elements often coexist in the same scenes. Ruiz is a master craftsman whose cinematic intelligence is put to the process of storytelling as much as to the telling of stories. Here he has two tales that intertwine through dreams and fantasies, bouncing off of and commenting on one another. Anne Parillaud stars as a lethal, world-weary assassin in the first and as a skittish, wide-eyed newlywed in the other. When one falls asleep the other wakes up, as if it were all a dream, but we're never sure which one (if either) is real. When the assassin takes a job that targets her lover (William Baldwin) and the newlywed suspects her husband (Baldwin again) of a plot against her life, it becomes clear that their relationship is far more than a schizophrenic split. Pinging against the narrative sophistication and deliriously rich images are creaky B-movie twists and hoary performances by Baldwin and femme fatale Lisanne Falk. The result is a film that defies its own conventions, like a parody of bad thrillers executed with the assured brilliance of a cinematic genius. It may not always work, but it never fails to astonish. --Sean Axmaker

3 out of 5 stars "Where does the dream end and reality begin?".......2002-10-26

In "Shattered Image," the line between reality and fantasy is blurred when two characters (both played by Anne Parillaud) start appearing in each other's dreams. Like the majority of actors in this movie (William Baldwin, Lisanne Falk, and Graham Greene), Parillaud plays dual roles: one being a weak young woman named Jessie Markham who recently married Brian (Baldwin) and is currently honeymooning in Jamaica with him; the other Jessie is a blunt hit woman who is hired to kill Conrad Reynolds (also played by Baldwin). Their lives begin to intertwine and mirror each other's as the movie progresses, cumulating in a somewhat predictable ending.

"Shattered Image" had the potential to be a good erotic thriller, but with a bad script and poor acting, it didn't quite make it that far. William Baldwin does make for pleasant eye candy, but I bought this movie mainly for Anne Parillaud, who I thought was terrific in "La Femme Nikita," playing a role similar to the one in this movie--an assassin. However, "Shattered Image" doesn't have as much appeal as "La Femme Nikita." In fact, I found very little appealing about this movie. It's long, complex, and hard to follow. I had to replay it a couple of times to really understand what was going on, and even now I'm not so sure I get it. Besides the cinematography, I can't find very much else worth praising about this movie. Unless you're a big fan of one of the actors or actresses, I'd skip this one.

3 out of 5 stars Worth a See! 3 1/2 stars!.......2000-09-26

Even though this film is a bit slow-moving, it is worth a see! Anne Parrillaud seems to go back and forth between two dreams -- and the viewer tries to figure out which one is reality. I figured out what was going on before it ended -- so I won't give it away, but if you've ever wondered what it's like to be in a coma and come out of it -- then this film is worth the watch. From the point of view of someone who has been in a coma for 5-6 weeks and has come out of it, it's a scary place to be and this film is one of the only films that I think could give someone an idea of what the experience is like.

1 out of 5 stars A waste of time.......2000-09-25

What can I say? After wasting too much time watching it, the movie still made no sense to me at the end. I like movies that make sense, or have some artistic unity. The acting was poor and flat in tone, perhaps because the actors were constantly asking themselves "How did I let myself get trapped into making this movie?".

3 out of 5 stars Worth a look for fans of off-beat cinema.......1999-09-18

The film is strange...it's best to watch it having no concept of what's going to happen, so I'm certainly not going to spill the beans, suffice to say it's a film sure to attract a cult following.

4 out of 5 stars I give the stars to Anne.......1999-08-15

I used to love Billy Baldwin. Then I read an article where he really downtalked one of his former stars, Sharon Stone. Now every time I see him in a romantic movie with someone, I think, well, is he gonna go and talk bad about this person too? The movie was ok, not great, but ok.

4 out of 5 stars Do Individuals Diagnosed With Schizophrenia REALLY Hear Imaginary Voices?.......2006-12-19

"Shattered Mind" is an attempt by psychiatry and the pharmaceutical industry to persuade viewers that schizophrenia is a very real disease and that individuals diagnosed with schizphrenia hear imaginary voices speaking to them, telling them to engage in antisocial behavior.

View this DVD with a very critical eye and mind. In my opinion, too much emphasis is placed on the idea that people diagnosed with schizophrenia experience auditory hallucinations. In fact, most people diagnosed with one form of schizophrenia or another, apparently do NOT experience auditory hallucinations. That is my main criticism of the video.

One of the subjects interviewed in the video is Marty, an artist and native of Long Island. What the video does not reveal, yet what is revealed in other on-line documents I have perused, is that Marty reportedly experimented with alcohol and other drugs during high school and college. He also experienced a lot of sadness as a result of the death of his mother and sister. Thus, the video fails to reveal the influence alcohol and drugs may have had on his mental condition, and the effect the simultaneous death of his mother and sister may have had on his mental condition. Hallucinogenic drugs can indeed produce hallucinations and combinantions of alcohol and other drugs can result in manic or schizophrenic-like behavior.

It would seem that the most sane treatment method for so-called "schizophrenia" would be to convince the patient to AVOID using alcohol and other psychoactive drugs altogether, rather than to prescribe neuroleptic drugs and antidepressantns. Regular exercise and balanced nutrition are the building blocks of the brain -- the building blocks of healthy neurotransmitters.

Ted Kaczynski, the serial bomber, is mentioned in the video, as a good reason for supporting drug therapy in the prevention of schizophrenic episodes. However, what is not revealed in the video is that Kaczynski reportedly was a victim of a CIA conducted experiment on Harvard students, in which he participated as an undergraduate student during the 1950s. The experiment involved desensitizing and brainwashing volunteers. The experiment also involved administring LSD to particpants in order to observe the effects. Follow-up investigation reveals that a disproportionate number of those volunteering for the CIA sponsored experiment committed murder and or suicide.

Incidentally, Kaczynski was also later prescribed Trazadone by a psychiatrist. Trazadone is an antidepressant, which is known to induce manic-psychotic episodes.

Thus, there is ongoing evidence by professionals in the psychiatric industry that psychiatric "medications" only exacerbate dysfunctional and psychotic behavior.

It is known that LSD can replicate and induce lasting symptoms of what is commonly called " paranoid schizophrenia."

Dr. E. Fuller Torrey, using the "twin studies" as evidence, claims that the brains of schizphrenics are different than the brains of non-schizophrenics. However, Dr. Bertram Karon presents a convincing argument that such is not the case. Dr. Karon suggests that it is the neuroleptic drugs used to "treat" so-called schizophrenia that produce the so-called brain abnormalities noted on brain scans.

Pharmaceutical drug lobbyists apparently have a very strong influence in persuading congress people to enact legislation mandating the use of psychotropic drugs in the tretment of mental illness.

The DVD interviews a staff representative from NAMI (The National Association for the Mentally Ill)and a U.S. Congresswoman, both of whom support legislation that would mandate that individuals diagnosed with schiozphrenia be forced to take neuroleptic drugs. There is still a great deal of controversy over the idea of forced or mandated treatment of schizophrenia with neuroleptic drugs, as neuroleptic drugs (even the newer ones) indeed produce a variety of debilitating side effects that probably in the long run do the patient more harm than good.

The fractious and unresolved relationship between Kagome and Inu-Yasha recedes into the background as they and their companions confront Naraku's latest scheme. The demon-lord has taken control of Sango's younger brother Kohaku, and is using the young man as an assassin. But even Naraku's powers have limits: the kindness of Sango and Kagome touch Kohaku's still-human heart. Inu-Yasha's suavely sinister brother Sesshomaru visits a 2,000-year-old magnolia tree whose branches were used to make the sheathes for the enchanted swords Tetsusaiga and Tenseiga. From the tree-spirit, Sesshomaru learns that Inu-Yasha's half-human/half-demon nature may eventually reduce him to a mindless killing machine. Sesshomaru wants to destroy Inu-Yasha almost as much as Naraku, but Kagome's largely untapped powers and the awesome magic of the nearly restored Shikon Jewel remain the wild cards in their deadly game. (Unrated, suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

Hi, Im Alice. Im the biggest fan of Inu Yasha. I know everything.
In this move of Inu yasha, Sangos younger brother Kuhaku (don't know how to spell it) comes back. But the thing is he has lost all his memories about his sister and the demon slayers. So Sango tyies to remind him about her and himself. and to think thats bad enough Kagura comes and attacks Inu Yahsa and the others. but things are not what they aper. the reson Kagura comes and attcks Inu Yahsa so she can keep him bissy while

Kuhaku can kill Kagome. you are probly thinking "I thought Kuhaku wasn't under Nurakus contorle anymore". Well your wrong. He is. The only reson Nuraku let Kuhaku go is to kill Kagome.
So anyway Inu Yasha finds out what there up to and miroku opens up his wind tunnle and say " Inu Yasha go help Kagome and Sango" So Inu Yasha dose and thats all Im going to tell you. Well I got to go. Buy this move. Beleve me you will love it.
