Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Stuck for a story idea that will excite his dismissive editor, New York magazine reporter Christopher Reeve hits on a winner: the life of a Manhattan pimp. The editor eats it up, but there's just one problem: Reeve made the whole thing up and now the editor wants more. What's worse, a scarily charismatic pimp (Morgan Freeman) and his top prostitute come looking for the reporter, believing that he was, in fact, writing about them. As they seduce him with access to their world, he becomes more and more trapped by his lies, particularly when a crusading D.A. also takes an interest in just what he knows. Reeve is the bland nougat center in what is otherwise a very tasty little film, given added crunch by the superlatively seductive Freeman and the equally intriguing Baker. --Marshall Fine

Shot on the streets of Kingston and set to a rich reggae score by Sly and Robbie, the highest-grossing film in Jamaican cinema (according to the producers) is a simple cops-and-gangsters thriller that drops the usual two-fisted cop clichés into the slums of a Third World reality. Charismatic Paul Campbell (who starred in the previous Jamaican hit Dancehall Queen) is Capone, a Jamaican Dirty Harry who wades into shootouts with both guns blazing. His maverick reputation lands him in Kingston, his hometown, where he tracks a gun-smuggling scheme to his boyhood friend Ratty (Mark Danvers), now the ambitious right-hand man to the local kingpin. It's a familiar story and the timid script always chooses action over drama. Capone's violent methods are never questioned, even when he's faced with old friends instead of faceless hoods, and he's given unimaginable leeway to shoot his way through the criminal population. Shot on digital video and released to theaters in a smeary-looking transfer, the video release is mastered from the digital source and looks infinitely better than its theatrical incarnation: crisp, bright, and vivid. The energetic style helps the picture overcome some of its generic cop-movie clichés, but the real draw is the street grit of clapboard houses, corrugated metal fences, and concrete brick homes: the matter-of-fact poverty of Kingston's slums. --Sean Axmaker

a review of a review.......2007-04-20
This is simply in response to the latest review made by "a viewer" about this film. I, quite simply, feel that the review has a level of narrow-mindedness about the film and recommend not basing your choice on their review. To state "do the world a favor and get rid of them" as well as saying that these criminals are "irredeemable and beyond any rehabilitation" is very prejudiced. The lack of restorative justice and the inability to find an effective deterrent is not necessarily the fault of the people who commit criminal acts, but is that of the state. Before saying that you wish that the cop was there to "take care of the hustlers and muggers that prey upon innocent visitors in (otherwise beautiful) places like Montego Bay and Negril" you should try to question why these muggers and hustlers even exist. Could it be because of the travler's presence in itself? Anyway, I do not believe that you can justify killing criminals to satisfy your own traveling enjoyment. It is reasons such as this that people who do lead a path of criminality do not get the appropriate attention and rehabilitation. Try questioning the methods of the state and not the 'hopelessness' of criminals. I recommend this movie, it's an A+. Just do not watch it with the mindset that this last reviewer quite narrowly insists.
Great Movie, Must-See for Anyone Planning to Visit Jamaica!.......2004-03-28
This movie shows an absolutely accurate portrayal of Jamaican society, and the sheer lawlessness and criminality inherent there. I have been to Jamaica and the law-and-order situation there is to be seen to be believed. It is like a war zone in most places. It is impossible to walk even a few steps without being harassed and intimidated by drug-pushers, pimps, prostitutes, etc. Some reviewers have complained about Capone the policeman's apparent trigger-happiness, but you have to realize that most of these criminals are irredeemable and beyond any rehabilitation, so he really did not have any other choice (if he wanted to stay alive himself and if there is to be any hope for Jamaica) than to do the world a favor and get rid of them. I just wish he'd been there to take care of the hustlers and muggers that prey upon innocent visitors in (otherwise beautiful) places like Montego Bay and Negril.
highly recommended.......2003-01-18
This is a great movie, especially if you like "Dancehall Queen". Paul Campbell does a great job as Capone and Carl Bradshaw is excellent as usual as the crime boss. While the story is somewhat generic it is still well worth watching.
Better than Dancehall Queen!.......2002-07-12
I bought this video because it had some of the same actors as "Dancehall Queen" and boy did I get my monies worth! I like that Paul Campbell, the bad guy in "Dancehall Queen", is the hero in "Third World Cop". I enjoyed the interplay of action, drama, and comedy. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoyed "Dancehall Queen" and does not mind some non-graphic violence.
This Is The Best........2002-04-22
This movie was just great, as a matter a fact the best out of JA. that I have seen. All I'll say is "YOU GO GUYS".

For reasons that are still fuzzy even by the time final credits roll for Double Take, Wall Street hotshot Daryl Chase (Orlando Jones), framed for both financial wrongdoings and murder, heads to Mexico after exchanging identities with fast-talking Freddie (Eddie Griffin), who is either the key to his freedom or the engineer of his demise. The incomprehensible and supposedly madcap twists and turns that follow make mindless buddy flicks like Rush Hour seem giants of brainy plotting in comparison. The film even features one of those unintentionally hysterical moments in which the villain stops to explain the entire charade to characters who supposedly already know what's going on--and it still doesn't make any sense. None of this would matter, of course, if everything was propelled by some sort of internal screwball logic that had it playfully bouncing over its plot holes. But writer-director George Gallo can't streamline his potential assets--Jones's suave likeability and Griffin's take-no-prisoners crassness--into something that moves. Some of the throwaway comic asides work ("You keep campaigning for this ass-whuppin', you gonna get elected"), but every single one of the extended bits is painfully strained and overdone. Griffin, in particular, becomes desperately obnoxious, and saddling him with clumsy comments on race and social status in a comedy that is ultimately about neither doesn't help. Try 48 Hours instead. --Steve Wiecking
Description
Outrageously funny and charged with explosive action, hot young comedy stars Eddie Griffin (DEUCE BIGALOW: MALE GIGOLO) and Orlando Jones (THE REPLACEMENTS) team up for a fast-paced adventure in the tradition of BLUE STREAK and RUSH HOUR. Framed in a multimillion-dollar money-laundering scheme, upstanding investement banker Daryl Chase (Jones) suddenly finds himself running from the FBI -- and swapping identities with loudmouthed, low-life petty thief Freddy Tiffany (Griffin). Then, as he dashes for the Mexican border in search of the one man who can clear his name, Daryl discovers his new alias is even more wanted than he is. With hilarious performances and nonstop excitement at every turn, buckle up for a riotous road trip as this wildly mismatched pair deliver the laughs in double time!

YOU CAN PUT YOUR MONEY ON EDDIE G. & ORLANDO J. ANYTIME!!.......2005-06-15
GREAT CAST MEMBERS ESPECIALLY WHEN COME DOWN TO EDDIE GRIFFINS & ORLANDO JONES! IT MADE ME LAUGH HYSTERICALLY, MAINLY AT THE BEGINNING WHEN EDDIE/FRED T. WAS DANCING WITH THE HARRY CHRISTIANS (MY MAN WAS BREAK-DANCING)! I ENJOYED HOW HE & ORLANDO/DARRYL C. MET UP. EDDIE/FRED TIFFANY WAS ACTING A FOOL AT THE LA PEARLA PARTY WHEN HE WENT ON STAGE & DID A JAMES BROWN MOVE (TOO FUNNY). GEORGE GALLO GREAT STORY POINT...GALLO MADE SURE THAT HE MADE IT OBVIOUS TO VIEWERS 2 PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO BODY MOVEMENTS & EYE SIGNALS... IF YOU LOOK BACK OR PAYED CLOSE ATTENTION YOU CAN SEE WHO WAS CROOKED FROM THE START... THAT IS WHY G. GALLO CAME UP WITH NAME DOUBLE TAKE!
I WOULD DEFINENTLY RECOMMEND "DOUBLE TAKE" TO ANYONE WITH SIMILAR TASTE!
Great Movie with confusing twists.......2003-05-30
This move was amazing. Eddie Griffin(Freddie) made this movie amazing by his fast-talking and smart mouth. Orlando Jones(Daryl Chase) is the perfect man for the character for which he was portrayed. Combined, the two make a great cast of actors, and made this movie so likeable. However, even at the end of the movie I was left with a few questions about the plot. I could watch this moie over-and-over again non-stop!
What a tangled web they weave.........2002-08-29
The first time I saw this movie, I have to admit, I was about to fall asleep. That normally doesn't happen, so I didn't think this movie was my type. However, I rented it again to give it another shot because there were some funny parts. But- Double Take is a thinking person's movie. If you don't have time to think about it and figure it out, theres only a few funny parts. But, if you enjoy movies that make you think and laugh, then try it. It also has a good cast including Orlando Jones, Eddie Griffin and one of my favorite actors- Daniel Roebuck.
Its Not As Bad As They Say.......2002-07-21
This movie about a wall street hot-shot named Daryl Chase, and a loud mouth "ghetto recipient" Freddy Tiffany has one of THE STUPIDEST plots you'll ever see. But this movie is just flat out hilarious! Eddie Griffin gives a great performance in this movie, and you'll be laughing till' the very end. Some of the lines are just so funny. Like when Freddy is in Chase' s office and he pretends to be on the phone he says stuff like " a broker is a smoker " and " is that Chloe kitt man I sure like to wax her draws" and as hes being taken out by security he says " hows yo mama we went out " Its a confusing movie but Eddie Griffin saves it. So dont listen to the critics, See this movie you'll like it its very funny!
As my kids would say...........2002-06-02
It was HECKA FUNNY....
Some parts just hit my funny bone and I found myself laughing even after the movie ended.
Ok, so not a real deep plot. Rich black business man, Orlando Jones, discovers monies being laundered by a drug dealer through his bank, and in his innocence to clear up the matter and prove that he has nothing to do with it, is thrown into a wild and crazy mix up that gets him involved with the crazy man...Eddie Griffith (who is unbelievable as FBI by the way). I have enjoyed Eddie Griffith's performances since the sitcom Malcom and Eddie. He's a funny man.
This being my first time really seeing Orlando Jones since his 7-up commercials, I was impressed with his acting ability.
For a FUNNY MOVIE it gets my five stars easily.

Chris Rock writes, directs, and stars in the sassy political comedy Head of State, about Mays Gilliam, a black man who's chosen by the leaders of an unspecificed party to run for president after their previous candidates die in a plan crash. Though he initially follows his handler's instructions, Gilliam soon starts handling speeches in his own brazen, outspoken way, which starts to turn the tide--which upsets the party leaders who chose him, since they expected him to lose. While Head of State doesn't quite have the razor wit that Rock wields in his stand-up routine, it has a sharper edge than just about any other political satire in recent memory. Rock bursts with charisma, and his supporting cast (including Lynn Whitfield, Dylan Baker, Robin Givens, and especially Bernie Mac as Gilliam's brother and running mate) provide solid comic support. --Bret Fetzer

Head of State.......2006-08-28
I think we all know Eminem did a better job of keeping it real. But Rock kept me chuckling, and eventually threw in enough to make it worthwhile even though he does play the "look how funny we black folks is" card too often. The big debate was stupid, though. I'd rather rewatch Eminem's rap battle. I may need to rewatch WAG THE DOG because it's more accurate. But damn it all, I've watched this twice and can't seem to add it to the great "DVD Swap Collection" we expats in China pass around. I'd still vote for Chris Rock against Dubya. MG2K4. Ya heard?
Chris Rocks the Votes. in this clever, Intelligent underrated movie........2005-12-13
Chris Rock does an excellent job writing directing and co-producing Head of State. It's a hilarious comedy with a lot of heart and a lot of soul. Well-written, intelligent and extremely clever, Rock's comedy stays true to its African-American roots while making commentary about the sad state of the current political process in America. Perhaps in his own way Rock is trying to send a message to politicians to express real ideas, speak from the heart.
In Head Of State Chris Rock plays a struggling Washington D.C. Alderman who gets no respect. Constituents don't appreciate the aspiring politician, and his girlfriend (Robin Givens) dumps him leaving him with unpaid bills and a repossessed car. The next day his boss (Keith David) fires him. He thinks things are turning around when the Democratic Party recruits him to run for President. The jokes on him; the Democratic party knows it can't win against the popular two-term Republican vice president in 2004, so they decide to trot out Rock's character as a filler candidate until the 2008 election. They don't believe a black candidate has a chance, but the alderman believes in himself.
The campaign is dull until a pep talk from his brother (Bernie Mac) at a Chicago campaign stop. Soon Chris changes campaign tactics and decides to be real. The more he's true to his Black self the more his poll numbers start to go up. This is when the movie really takes off. When Rock's Alderman starts saying what he feels instead of what he's rehearsed, the campaign starts to come to life. All of a sudden this underdog has a chance. All of a suddent the woman who dumped him wants him back, but the candidate has his eyes on a hardworking gas station worker (Tamala Jones)
As the alderman's polls numbers start to go up, the incumbent candidate starts to worry about the underdog, Rock's campaign manager's worry about controlling him. But he still believes in himself. He hits a snag after a school shooting, but with the help of his brother decides to challenge the incumbent to a debate. Things come to a head when the two candidates debate. Rock's character is full of energy and new ideas, and he eventually goes on to embarrass the uninspired jargon-spouting incumbent. In the end he wins the presidency becoming the head of State, and gets the girl who works at the gas station.
I really enjoyed this movie; I feel guilty about missing this one in theatres because this movie made me laugh and smile so much in two hours. I got give Chris Rock props for creating a film with a positive message and writing black characters in this movie that are intelligent and hardworking. In this "Gangsta" era it's rare to see a movie focusing on regular working class black folks. More props to Chris for making a movie with quality production values. A lot of black filmmakers don't take time to focus on crucial details like cinematography, casting and editing. Paying attention to those often ignored film elements transforms Head of State from a good screenplay into a great movie.
Besides Rock's hilarious and intelligent portrayal of the presidential candidate underdog, there are some great performances here from the supporting cast. Rock writes well-developed characters for all his cast, not just himself. Bernie Mac steals the few scenes he's in and has great chemistry with Rock; they feel like brothers. Robin Givens is hilarious as the gold-digging ex in her pitiful attempts to win back her man. Givens has the best performance of her career; I never thought she could be so funny. Lynn Whitfield literally disappears from the screen and becomes the campaign manger. She must have channeled Condelezza Rice for this performance. This woman is extremely underrated; she needs to be the lead in more films! (Cough*Halle Berry's upcoming Nefertiri* Cough) Tamala Jones is sweet as the love interest.
Head of State is a Shawn James five star essential video. Pick this one up along with Eddie Murphy's The Distinguished Gentleman, CB4, and The Great White Hype for your black cinema night. While you're at it, pick up Diary of A Mad Black Woman and How U Like Me Now.
Ouch.... rock bottom..........2005-09-29
Okay, I like Chris Rock... a little... well, maybe not. But reguardless, this movie is horrible. If Bill Muray all of a sudden turned black, and he landed the role, this movie would STILL be awful. Chris Rock is a horrible actor (Raul Julia is better, and one of his movie's landed in the TV show of movie shame, Mystery Science Theater 3,000) and in my opinion, he has a lot of stale, predictable humor. The movie plot is shallow, the acting horrible, the side romatic story couldn't be worse; let's face it, this movie is a slice of crap a la mode with bland tasting ice cream. I give this movie two starts because this will NEVER happen, it's a very far-fetched story, even for Hollywood (the only reason it doesn't get one star is because the chick in the movie is hot). If it ever does, I'm moving somewhere safer, like Cuba or North Korea. Alright, well, since no one will probably read this, I'm stopping. Just save yourself some time and money, do NOT watch this horrible excuse for a movie.

This movie is hilarious! This is a very enjoyable comedy.
You definetly get lots of laughs in this movie. Chris Rock is a comedy legend! How he comes up with this stuff is amazing. He was the films writer director and star. If your a fan of Chris rock you should definetly get this. It is wonderful politicial satire. If you are a Bernie Mac fan you should get this also. He is very funny in this also. Definetly a laugh out loud comedy!

head of state is a great movie, the only reason i didn't give it 5 stars was because i always think that's pushing it.
i picked this dvd up,because i couldn't see anything else and this had 2 great comedians(chris rock and bernie mac) it turned out to be a great choise
head of state is about mays gilliam,a normal man,who gets the oppertunity to run for president. the thing he doesn't know is that he is set up to lose.this makes it a great comedy with many LOL(Laugh Out Loud) moments
this film has some of the GREATEST comedy speeches of all time and fantastic one liners

Reviewer: Big Zach! NOT A KIDS REVIEW! although a kid!!!!!.......2005-08-23
Definetly a laugh out loud comedy!
a great movie...nothin' more nothin' less.......2005-07-17
head of state is a great movie, the only reason i didn't give it 5 stars was because i always think that's pushing it.
i picked this dvd up,because i couldn't see anything else and this had 2 great comedians(chris rock and bernie mac) it turned out to be a great choise
head of state is about mays gilliam,a normal man,who gets the oppertunity to run for president. the thing he doesn't know is that he is set up to lose.this makes it a great comedy with many LOL(Laugh Out Loud) moments
this film has some of the GREATEST comedy speeches of all time and fantastic one liners
a fantastic movie!

Morgan Freeman's favorite role.......2007-03-28
I purchase this movie because Morgan Freeman stated on "Oprah" that the role he played in this movie was his favorite role. I had never heard of the movie, but being a Morgan Freeman fan, I had to search it out. The movie was enjoyable, had a good storyline and is a must-see for Morgan Freeman fans and Christopher Reeve fans.
GREAT.......2006-08-16
JUST LIKE SEEING IT FOR THE FIRST TIME, I'M VERY HAPPY WITH THE SERVICE.
Street Smart.......2005-09-16
I do believe Mr. Christopher Reeve needed his superman suit to make people believe his performance. He missed the mark in this film. It's almost like he went to some "psuedo-Kevin-Costner-wannabe-a-bad-actor" school prior to the filming. I blame the casting director and possibly the director himself/herself. On the other hand... Morgan Freeman's performance was amusing enough to keep me attentive to the end. I was tickled pink to see Mr. Freeman in a "non-goody-two-shoes" role. He is a very versatile actor, very skilled!
Great Morgan Freeman, Good Movie.......2005-02-16
This is a movie that comes so close to being a first-rate thriller that it's disappointing when it misses. It still is a good, hard-edged story, thanks to Morgan Freeman as Leo Smalls, Jr., aka Fast Black, a domineering, charismatic and vicious New York pimp.
Christopher Reeve stars as Jonathan Fisher, a magazine writer who to meet a deadline fakes a story about tough street life and the women and pimps who work it. His main character is just as phoney as the rest of the story, but the article creates a sensation. The DA thinks the pimp in the story is really Fast Black, who is on trial for murder. He wants Fisher's notes, but, of course, Fisher doesn't have any. And then Fast Black, out on bail, sees an opportunity. At first he thinks someone has been talking about him to Fisher and wants to know who. But then he'll show Fisher real street life and verify that he was the character, saving Fisher from journalistic disgrace...but Fisher has to give him an alibi. The story plays out partly through Fisher's squirming attempts to get out of his fix and partly through Fast Black's ruthlessness.
The movie is dominated by Freeman's performance as Fast Black. Fast is a product of the streets, who has survived and flourished because he is ruthless and smart. He can turn violent in an instant, but you're never sure if he's actually lost control. He can be charming and even fascinating. Part of Fisher's problem is that being accepted by Fast Black is a little like being on a drug.
Morgan Freeman over the last few years seems to be the one directors go to when they want world-weary wisdom (Unforgiven, Shawshank, Million Dollar Baby, many others). He can do this kind of stuff with his eyes shut. His turn as a completely believeable, charming, vicious pimp is something to see.
The movie feaures some other strong performances. Kathy Baker plays Punchy, one of Fast Black's prostitutes who befriends Fisher. She still has a few ounces of self respect, and seeing Fast Black terrorize her is not pretty. Andre Gregory plays Fisher's magazine publisher and steals every scene he's in. Shari Hilton as Darlene, another of Fast Black's women, and Erik King as Reggie, Fast Black's muscle and go-fer, make strong impressions.
However, the movie has two weaknesses. Fast Black's story and Fisher's story never quite come together. And Reeve simply doesn't dominate the movie the way his character should. His moral conflict seems more yuppie angst.
Even so, this is a good movie with a first-rate performance. The DVD transfer looks good and there are no extras to speak of.

Unbelievable rubbish pitched at 13 year olds.......2005-06-22
A number of talented actors walk through this sham, half awake. Motor cars, and tiny minds, poorly scripted, rubbish for the brain dead. Get a life.
Good story, nice cars, excellent bonus section on Drifting.......2005-01-05
This movie was deeper than I thought. Not as much action as 2Fast 2Furious, and not as much special effects. But it is much more interesting and better made than a lot of the other so-called Fast & Furious clones, and the actors are believeable.
I almost gave it 4 stars because of not enough driving action, but there is a really sweet 10 minute or more spot on drifting in the bonus features during the "Test Drive" with Rhys Millen. If you know anything about drifting you have heard of Millen, and he gives a better look at Drifting in this one bonus segment than many so-called Drifting videos I've seen. It's almost overkill how much he lights up those tires!
Alot better then what i expected.......2005-01-04
After reading ALOT of reviews on this movie, i wasnt expecting much. but it was actually a pretty good movie. great storyline. The GTO wasnt in the movie as much as i hoped. It showed a 4th GEN Trans Am which was pretty cool to see. I loved the part where Hopper gets picked up from prison by his grandson and talks shxt about his riceburner lol.
The special features have alot of GTO stuff. you could watch that stuff over and over. After seeing the GTO in the special features, i almost want to trade in one of my T/A's for one, but nah!! lol would still be nice to have one. espcially with a LS2 400 horsepower!
A Misfit Copy.......2005-01-01
of The Fast & The Furious movie and only 20% of the movie time contains racing, Simply the movie is an advertise for a Misfit car called 2005 GTO (a.k.a Holden Monaro desgined and produced in Australia) also released as 2003 Chevrolet Lumina SS Copue in the Middle East (I bought one before & sold it after one week only), This car simply not Pontiac or Chevrolet it's Holden and you can find alot of them in the streets because of it's cheap price as a sports car.

Great Movie for Car Addicts - Dennis Hopper is Back!.......2004-11-17
This is a movie for people who love cars, period. It's no masterpiece or massive Hollywood bonanza, but a good addition to any car fan's collection, and delivers a generous dose of action - expected from this genre of car/action movies.
Well produced and well executed and creative in places. It's almost like a Pontiac commercial in some spots, but redeems itself with interesting characters and great acting from Dennis Hopper, who adds his own "gravitas" to this title. Also, true car nuts will appreciate the scene with the car show - I know I did since I go to them every year...!
For the first 20 minutes or so its pure Boy Racer meets Old Hot Rodder criminal (or Easy Rider?) - but with a twist. "JJ" (Carmack's girlfriend) is easy on the eyes, for sure.
If you are a fan of Hopper, or a fan of Fast and Furious (this movie was produced by the same guy), then this movie is a nice gem you might have missed.
Originally aired on cable on USA Network, the DVD has a lot of extras and the pleasant straight run with no commercials.

An Instant Favorite.......2007-07-04
An ex-special forces soldier (Leon) is hired to be the bodyguard of a local mobster's daughter, (Sara). They fall deeply in love with each other, but there are obstacles that stand in their way. One, the girl's father has already made plans for her future, and two, Sara is only sixteen and Leon is forty. They hide their love, knowing that if Sara's father discover's the two are lovers he really will kill Leon. Needless to say, her father does find out.
The first ten minutes of this film are really quite awful; some of the action shots are over the top and several parts are downright flakey, but I promise you will LOVE this movie! This is quite simply one of the most unique and original films I have ever seen. It's a cross between a mob movie, an action film, a comedy, and a love story. Once past the first few scenes the movie just keeps getting better and better. The last fifteen minutes are wonderful and the ending is one of my all-time favorites. I hated to see it conclude.
While the action is fast paced and exciting, the real core of the film is the love story between Leon, (played by the great Boguslaw Linda) and Sara, (real-life sixteen-year-old Agnieska Wlodarczyk). This is not a case of school-girl infatuation, or an older man seducing and taking advantage of a young girl. The love between Leon and Sara is the real thing and the actors do such a convincing job portraying this that the age of the characters becomes a moot-point next to the genuine love that compromises this relationship. Pay close attention to the song "I'm Your Man" that is sung as the final scene fades out. It is sung by Boguslaw Linda and the lyrics fit in so well with the concluding scene that you realize that the singer is actually Leon, finally able to express in words the love he has developed for Sara and it works into the film beautifully.
Along with action and romance, the director makes clever use of humor. This is a Polish movie and it is clear in some ways that the director was striving to emulate American mob and action films. When they're not shooting someone, or burying bodies in the back yard, one of the gangsters favorite activities is watching subtitled American films about organized crime; they seem to be mesmerized by them. I am an American, and I don't speak Polish, so this meant I had to use subtitles. Basically then, you have Americans watching a Polish mob movie in subtitles of Polish mob members watching American mob movies in subtitles. You just have to love the paradox there and I'm sure it was intentional on the part of the director.
In short, there is something about this film that just clicks. Once viewed, it becomes an instant favorite - one of those films you love to watch over and over again. I've lent my copy to many of my friends and have yet to have anyone tell me they disliked it.
"Sara" has the right mix of action, humor, and an interesting plot.......2006-12-16
"Sara" is Maciej Slesicki's 1997 hit action/romance. The film has the right mix of action, humor, and an interesting plot for your viewing pleasure.
Leon (Boguslaw Linda), a 40-year old former Polish special forces soldier, is hired as a bodyguard to protect a mob boss's pretty 16-year old daughter, Sara (Agnieszka Wlodarczyk). A passionate love develops between Sara and Leon after he saves her life.
The acting in the movie is great. Linda plays the role of a "tough guy" in many Polish films, but "Sara" is my favorite. Marek Perepeczko, renowned for playing the leading role in the 1970s television series "Janosik," plays the mob boss in "Sara". Both Linda and Perepeczko play off each other exceptionally well. "Sara" is Wlodarczyk's first feature film; she was about 16 at the time "Sara" was filmed and displays natural talent. Cezary Pazura, although playing a lesser role as a goon of the mob boss, adds to the film.
"Sara" is a fun movie with great action and enough suspense to hold one's attention. I highly recommend "Sara" to just about all audiences, even those that are not too familiar with Polish cinema.

Coming Soon to the 2 for $5 rack!.......2006-10-17
First the positives, the movies is set in Russia and appears to have been filmed there or at least in eastern Europe. Even if they filmed it this way to save money, the producers deserve some credit for authenticity. The secondary "Russian" characters also seem authentic ( except Tara Reid ) and are decent actors.
Thats pretty much it for the positives. The two or three main "actors" are pretty poor. The lead character is a CIA analyst who the agency sends to the field to conduct an investigation in to a Russian Billionairs death. "Why would they send a desk officer in the field?" you may ask, well you dont have to because the movie asks this for you 30 or 40 times. Because they wanted him to fail!
< gasp!>,
They do fail. Fail in making an egaging, believable, or entertaining film. Im not sure but I think the bulk of Tara Reid's part was dubbed. badly. The main character cant act. The plot goes beyond cliche to routine and boring. Car chases, villians with facial scars, crooked politicians, and a hooker with a heart of gold. And no you dont see Tara Reid naked in it either.
Its one of those movies that you watch and constantly ask "why is he doing that?"
