Mick Jagger had one of his rare sizable acting roles, as the famed Australian outlaw, in this atmospheric biopic (remade in 2004 with Heath Ledger). The movie has the look and spirit of other Vietnam-era counterculture Westerns, with Irishman Ned Kelly a rebel against the unjust Establishment. Tony Richardson's direction has the free-for-all laxity of the era, though the general sense of mess is tidied up by the often stunning location photography by ace DP Gerry Fisher. What makes the film memorable is the soundtrack, a heavy portion of which is made up of Western ballads written by witty Shel Silverstein and sung by Waylon Jennings; elsewhere, the Amish-bearded Jagger croons "The Wild Colonial Boy." A charitable assessment of Jagger's performance would conclude that he brings an intriguing Pirandellian presence to the role; a more clear-eyed view would say that he simply doesn't have the acting chops to carry it off. --Robert Horton

When local wag Jackie O'Shea (Ian Bannen) discovers that one of his neighbors in the village of Tulaigh Mohr is a lottery winner he sees a chance to share in the wealth. Things get complicated when Jackie and his pal Michael O'Sullivan (David Kelly) discover that the winner, Ned Devine, died of shock at the very moment he learned of becoming a millionaire. Undaunted, Jackie and Michael dispose of the lucky stiff and hatch a plot to impersonate him and claim the prize. Soon the whole village is involved and the plot rapidly thickens.
This film has been compared to The Full Monty, but it lacks the vein of desperation that added depth to that film. Instead, Waking Ned Devine is closer in tone to classic British comedies like Whisky Galore!, with its cast of eccentrics gleefully conspiring to outwit the authorities. Those with a low tolerance for twinkly eyed Irish charm might be tempted to steer clear, although the movie is saved, for the most part, by its central performances. Bannen is superb as an old man who is clearly hungry for any excitement he can drum up and David Kelly is remarkable as his scrawny sidekick. Kelly has had a long career as a character actor in film and television, but here he has a chance to really let loose. His naked motorcycle ride is a marvelous set piece and in all of his other scenes his twitchy, perfectly timed performance quite simply steals the movie. --Simon Leake
Description
When Ned Devine dies from shock after winning the lottery, two longtime friends, Micheal and Jackie, discover the body and agree Ned would want them to benefit from his good luck. They embark upon an outrageous scheme to claim the ticket but first they have to get all the townsfolk to go along with their plan!

"Charming" Irish movie with very good acting and beautiful imagery. Clever concept and entertaining from beginning to end. Seems to give an accurate portrayal of small-town Irish living. I loved the actors! The music is wonderful too.
Masterful.......2007-04-26
If you ever wanted to visit a small one street village in Ireland and get a peek into the characters that live there, this is the movie for you. If you have ever lived in Ireland and miss home, than this is the movie for you!!!!
refreshung, very funny.......2007-03-19
We seldom, if ever, go to the movies any more. Not willing to pay so much for so much garbage. We are older and Irish so we appreciate the personalities and the humor of this movie. Also just loved the scenery. Having been to Ireland many years ago, it brought back memories of the beautiful countryside, the simplicity of life there etc. Our son had seen the movie and recommended it.

Best known for making movies about men and violence, director Walter Hill scored a misfire with this ambitious but ultimately dreary remake of Akira Kurosawa's samurai classic Yojimbo. The story's essentially the same but the setting has been switched to a dusty, almost ghostly Texas town in the 1930s, where two rival Chicago gangs are locked in an uneasy truce. Bruce Willis plays the lone drifter who allies himself with both gangs to his own advantage, working both sides against each other according to his own hidden agenda. The violence escalates to a bloody climax, of course, with Christopher Walken, David Patrick Kelly, and Michael Imperioli as trigger-happy lieutenants in a lonely, desolate war. Fans of gangster movies will want to see this, and, if nothing else, Hill has brought his polished style to a vaguely mythic story. It's far from being a classic, however, and although its action is at times masterfully choreographed, the movie's humorless attitude is unexpectedly oppressive. --Jeff Shannon

Red Harvest retold through Gun Poetry.......2007-06-29
As far as I know, this makes the second movie produced that's based on Dashiell Hammett's 'Red Harvest' (same guy who wrote The Thin Man and The Maltese Falcon). The first was Kurosawa's 'Yojimbo', which is undoubtedly a classic of Japanese cinema, itself spawning a revolution in American movie making when Sergio Leone began making all of Kurosawa's Samurai flicks into what we now know as Spaghetti Westerns.
If you've seen Yojimbo, or its western rendition `A Fistful of Dollars', and enjoyed either one, then you should get quite a kick out of this Bruce Willis Powered send up to Hammett's first foray into grunge fiction. We already know the story (lonely town, gangs, double crossing, woman, money, gunfights, no good guy just bad guys and indifferent guys), so the delivery is what's going to make the movie.
So how's the delivery? Absolutely Gun-alicious!
The whole movie is quite visceral; the gun fights are reminiscent of John Woo (slightly unrealistic, but convincing) and the dialogue is retailored to match the characters delivery, whether it be quiet and whispered, loud and obnoxious, or just mumbles. Bruce Willis was the perfect choice for the lead, menacing and believable as always. My favorite casting choice was Christopher Walken, the great character actor of our generation. The humor and insanity he brought to `Last Man Standing' is what really tied the whole movie together, and earned it 5 solid stars.
The Bottom Line: Know the history of this movie, and you'll enjoy it all the more.
A Unique Masterpiece.......2007-05-10
Part prohibition-era gangster movie and part Clint Eastwood spaghetti western, "Last Man Standing" is a film that is entertaining from beginning to end. This movie does not take itself seriously. The characters are as if from a comic book, lacking complexity, and the dialogue is cliche. It's theme of redemption for the morally challenged "hero" , "John Smith", performed by Bruce Willis saves it from being a mindless shoot 'em up. Doesn't sound too promising? Wait until you experience it. Two rival booze profiteering gangs, one Italians and one Irish, both from urban Chicago, compete with each other for control of the "old west" town near the Mexican border that they operate out of. The only happy person in town, indeed, one of the few left other than gangsters, is the undertaker. Business is good. "John Smith" rides into town and gets the idea that he can play them off of each other to make some money, but sympathy for the plight of three women interferes with his plans. Shooting accompanied by the killing that results is the main action. If you like that sort of thing, then this is a great example.
The real star of this movie is the atmospherics and the cast. The filming is done in such a way that you are immersed in the setting. Dust, heat, colorless wasteland of both nature and the soul. The narration by our protagonist, rather than spicing it up, merely piles on the cynicism and nihilism of the externals. The musical soundtrack by Ry Cooder is amazing and my favorite part of the movie, perfectly in sync with the visual image and subject matter. I purchased the music as soon as I was able and listen to it often. One of my favorite soundtracks ever. Bruce Willis is excellent as usual and Christopher Walken is perfect as the sociopathic killer. Bruce Dern as the corrupt Sheriff and William Sanderson as the inn-keeper are great. This is a movie worth owning because you will watch it again and again.
Great Movie.......2007-02-20
Some people criticize the movie for being a rip off of Eastwood's Fist Full of Dollars. Well duh! Like Fist Full of Dollars, Last Man Standing is an HOMAGE to Akira Kuwasawa's Yojimbo. Not a rip off, LMS is a modern honoring of a classic film.
Great audio for the gun fights, great cinematography that gives the movie a definite mood. If you love 1930's gangster movies you'll love this film. One of my all time favorites!
All Guns Blazing.......2007-01-31
This movie has the best gun sounds of any movie ever; It also features more gunfights than several other movies put together...Short on plot and heavy on atmosphere and violence, this movie is pretty much Bruce Willis shooting everything in sight for an hour and forty minutes. But I love Walter Hill, who has a knack for intensity. He directs this straight forward tale with skill that raises potentially so-so material to another level. I love the dust, the Ry Cooder soundtrack, the whole Old West meets the East Coast Gangster thing; Bruce Dern and Christopher Walken are always amusing, and it's just a fun movie to watch unfold, even though you pretty much know where it's going. Sounds GREAT loud!!!
"THE MOVIE".......2007-01-03
This is one of Bruce best movies that I have seen him in. I look at this movie at least four times a month. All of Bruce Willis fans this is a DVD that you must have!!!

Thematically ambitious and emotionally complex, Clint Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers is an intimate epic with much to say about war and the nature of heroism in America. Based on the non-fiction bestseller by James Bradley (with Ron Powers), and adapted by Million Dollar Baby screenwriter Paul Haggis (Jarhead screenwriter William Broyles Jr. wrote an earlier draft that was abandoned when Eastwood signed on to direct), this isn't so much a conventional war movie as it is a thought-provoking meditation on our collective need for heroes, even at the expense of those we deem heroic. In telling the story of the six men (five Marines, one Navy medic) who raised the American flag of victory on the battle-ravaged Japanese island of Iwo Jima on February 23rd, 1945, Eastwood takes us deep into the horror of war (in painstakingly authentic Iwo Jima battle scenes) while emphasizing how three of the surviving flag-raisers (played by Adam Beach, Ryan Phillippe, and Jesse Bradford) became reluctant celebrities - and resentful pawns in a wartime publicity campaign - after their flag-raising was immortalized by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal in the most famous photograph in military history.
As the surviving flag-raisers reluctantly play their public roles as "the heroes of Iwo Jima" during an exhausting (but clearly necessary) wartime bond rally tour, Flags of Our Fathers evolves into a pointed study of battlefield valor and misplaced idolatry, incorporating subtle comment on the bogus nature of celebrity, the trauma of battle, and the true meaning of heroism in wartime. Wisely avoiding any direct parallels to contemporary history, Eastwood allows us to draw our own conclusions about the Iwo Jima flag-raisers and how their postwar histories (both noble and tragic) simultaneously illustrate the hazards of exploited celebrity and society's genuine need for admirable role models during times of national crisis. Flags of Our Fathers defies the expectations of those seeking a more straightforward war-action drama, but it's richly satisfying, impeccably crafted film that manages to be genuinely patriotic (in celebrating the camaraderie of soldiers in battle) while dramatizing the ultimate futility of war. Eastwood's follow-up film, Letters from Iwo Jima, examines the Iwo Jima conflict from the Japanese perspective. --Jeff Shannon

The American Way.......2007-07-05
This was a very thought-provoking piece. Extremely well played by actors previously unknown to me. The direction was spot on allowing the story to unfold with no histrionics. Gory - yes, but that's what war is. Well worth a second view. Oh yes the music was very fitting and poignant.
BORING AND DEPRESSING.......2007-07-01
I like war films like Saving Private Ryan and Pearl Harbor, but I found this film depressing, hopeless ("everything is a lie!") and downright boring. It seems interesting but after a while you just feel aweful about your own country and feel fooled. I love you Clint but you should have just changed directions of the film from the beginning
Too much bouncing around.......2007-06-30
I'm a little bit of a history buff and like to watch movies about different periods of history to learn a little bit. I was disappointed with this movie. Seemed like we were bouncing around a little too much and it was hard to track events and people. In the end, I felt the movie was more about Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome than about Iwo Jima or the war.
I would probably pass on this one and watch something else, unless you are really curious about it.
Flags of Our Fathers (HD DVD) Review by Justin Sluss.......2007-06-21
The Movie Itself is one part of a pair of films done by legendary actor/director Clint Eastwood about the battle at Iwo Jima in World War II. "Flags of Our Fathers" is one of two films that Clint did about the battle from both side's perspectives. "Letters from Iwo Jima" (this movie's counter-part) tells the Japanese perspective. While this film tells the American perspective I guess you could say, it's primarily about a real life photo that can be found on the cover of this release. The picture is a very patriotic photograph that shows six soldiers raising the American flag after the battle at Iwo Jima. This picture starts a lot of media coverage and hype labeling the three surviving soldiers "war heroes." This film follows the lives during and after that battle of those three remaining soldiers, John "Doc" Bradley (played by Ryan Phillippe), Rene Gagnon (played by Jesse Bradford) and Ira Hayes (played by Adam Beach). I'd like to point out that this film is based on true events and the names of the soldiers are real. In fact the original book "Flags of Our Fathers" was written by James Bradley (son of John "Doc" Bradley). This film was also produced by Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg.
These three soldiers are brought home labeled as "war heroes" as stated above and soon being used by the U.S. government to help sell war bonds to help the war effort. Which they do accomplish but at the same time there's a lot of demons inside these men that came from seeing such a horrific battle at Iwo Jima. This is especially true for both John Bradley and Ira Hayes who throughout the film have post-war stress induced flashbacks that really got to them on a really emotional level that they can't talk about with anyone or even come to terms with themselves. This movie is not one that glorifies war but instead one that shows the hell that comes with it. So if you're expecting to see a bunch of Japanese get slaughtered you might wanna look elsewhere and seek therapy. That's not what this movie is about. This movie and what it stands for can really be stated best by a quote by the real John "Doc" Bradley, "The real heroes of Iwo Jima are the guys who didn't come back". I think after watching this film that Clint Eastwood made you'll have a better understanding for that quote.
Video Quality on this release is presented in 1080p VC-1 encoded on a 30gb HD DVD for the feature film. This film visually is up there with "Saving Private Ryan" in terms of amazing visual CG special effects and such. Even though war as it is portrayed in this film is a very ugly and disturbing thing to watch at times, this release in terms of video quality itself really does offer just an amazing transfer with great picture. The blacks are perfect, no artifacts or pixilation to be found in this video presentation. The cinematography style that this film as well as it's counter-part, "Letters from Iwo Jima" uses might lead some to think the contrast is off but it's just the visual style that Clint Eastwood was going for to show the time period in both films. This release is one of the best in terms of video quality yet from Paramount and I hope it's a sign of things to come.
Audio Quality on this release is the standard Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 @ 1.5Mbps. One thing most important to this sound mix is the fact it's a film about war, World War II at that. So it's kind of expected a movie like this have a great surround mix and I can honestly say it lives up to those expectations very much so. Dialog comes out in obviously the center and front channels as you'd expect in the less intense scenes of the film. When you're in the flashbacks of battle scenes of the film you really notice an awesome surround presence that will make you hear gunfire up close, distant or passing gunfire as well as mortar shells. The surround experience on this release is one that is sure to please any action film fan.
Bonus Materials are included on their very own extra HD DVD and are in High Definition. First off there's "An Introduction by Clint Eastwood" (5 minutes), then "Words on the Page" (17 minutes) which tells us a bit about the original book written by James Bradley. James is the son of John Bradley (played by Ryan Phillipe in the film). This feature offers interviews with James Bradley (again the book's original author) as well as the screenplay writers William Broyles, Jr. and Paul Haggis. Next is "Six Brave Men" (20 minutes) which tells the personal stories of each of the six real life soldiers in the photograph and offers interviews with the actors who portray them in this film. "The Making of an Epic" (30 minutes) is your typical making of documentary of a film. It includes interviews with everyone from the producer (Robert Lorenz), director of photography (Tom Stern), special effects coordinator, editor (Joel Cox), art director, costume designer and even the military technical adviser. "The Making of an Epic" is really by far the real highlight of the bonus materials for this film and looks amazing in High Def. "Raising the Flag" (3 minutes) is a short feature about reenacting the photograph that the film is primarily about in the film just as it was in real life. "Visual Effects" (15 minutes) is exactly what the name says, a feature on the visual ("CG") special effects used on this film. "Looking into the Past" (10 minutes) offers up a lot of old historical military video footage of the actual battle at Iwo Jima. History Channel fans will definitely love this while some of the more action film oriented crowd may want to skip this. The last feature included is the original Theatrical Trailer in High Def. This release definitely packs some great bonus materials on it's very own disc and is really impressive.

Simle Review.......2007-06-20
If you are thinking that this movie is "Saving Private Ryan" in the Pacific -- it is not.
If you are curious how World War II soldiers dealt with the experience of war, and the efforts of the U.S. government to fund World War II then you may find this movie interesting.
If you are interested in the battle of Iwo Jima take a look at Letters from Iwo Jima or the History channel.

Matthew McConaughey (U-571) and Christian Bale (SHAFT) star in an explosive action-packed adventure with bone-charring special effects that will have you glued to your seat! When workers in a London tunneling project awaken an unearthly fire-breathing beast from centuries of slumber, all hell breaks loose. Twelve-year-old Quinn (Bale) sees his mother, one of the workers, die trying to escape this new terror. Twenty years later as a "fire chief," he tries to keep a group of refugees alive with fierce dragons dominating the air, burning the land and feeding on the ash. Unexpectedly, Van Zan (McConaughey), a hotshot American militia leader, shows up with a ragtag group of slayers on a perilous crusade to hunt down and destroy the beasts. Tempers flare when there is a struggle for leadership -- until both men realize only one species is getting out of this alive.

The Road Warrior meets Dragonslayer in the briskly entertaining post-apocalyptic action thriller Reign of Fire. Reign of Fire exists primarily to give us a bigger and better dragon than the Vermithrax Pejorative of 1981's classic Dragonslayer, and in that regard, the special effects are mightily impressive; the reptilian fire-breathers are stupendously convincing. While the earlier film offers a richer, more whimsical medieval adventure, Reign of Fire is a fast-moving tale of man versus dragon that takes place in the charred England of 2020, after Earth has been scorched by rapidly multiplying dragons and the aftermath of a futile nuclear counterstrike. Mixing high-tech gadgetry with primitive survivalism, X-Files alumnus Rob Bowman makes the most of his midlevel budget, establishing a lavish castle base for the rugged, adversarial teaming of Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey as dragonslayers on the brink of extinction. With a steady supply of crowd-pleasing highlights, Reign of Fire is a pyrotechnical treat. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Ok movie but I was Dissapointed.......2007-06-30
Ok as a typical monster type movie. Effects were great!
I was disappointed in the story line. After viewing all of the trailers, I expected there to be a lot more about the dragons.
I was really looking forward to the sections of the movie where they discover more about the dragons, like their biology, how long have they been around, more science stuff. But it didn't really come.
What you got was a narrator who just dumped all of the interesting facts on you, just to transition you to the end section where they could have the final conflicts.
I enjoy the discovery, where certain characters investigate and after a lot of work they find that final piece of the puzzle that helps them in the end. The process of discovery, picking up on small details that allow your imagination to piece together and fill in the full story. Not just a quick info dump, skip all of the cool stuff, and jump back into the action.
Not that action is bad, in fact I like it best when they intersperse the action scenes with the investigation and discovery scenes.
So I guess it's an Ok Monster Movie, but not great Si-Fi!
a b-movie, but not a classic b........2007-06-27
Bale and Scorupco must have died a thousand deaths delivering the movie's last lines. I got goosebumps in sympathetic mortification for the actors. Seriously cringe-worthy.
But I didn't expect the movie to turn out quite so bad, at least not from its beginning. Actually, it starts pretty well -- our hero as a boy opening up a Pandora's box of dragons and then his grown-up voice-over (though oddly his accent changed) sequence narrating the disaster that ensued. Standard stuff for post-apocalyptic sci-fi but I kinda like that and that part is edited with some momentum. And there are a few nice moments, notably a very endearing pop culture movie re-enactment, a few droll lines, and some fun popcorn-crunching here and there. It's not all bad. But what with a script that forces its actors to do too much awkward exposition, a hilarious over-the-top militaristic score that begs for the A-Team and Saturday afternoon tv, grammatical errors in the set props, and an actor (McConnaughey) who alternately grunts/preaches/cries and whom you just can't quite believe knows the meaning of 'epidemiology' as he utters it, plus that mortifying ending... holy cow, batman, it does get bad.
But not so bad that it should go cult. The badness here is not a heroic, epic, capital-B bad. Just amateurish.
I got this yesterday.......2007-06-22
I don't know what this about but Matthew Mcconaughey and Christian Bale are in London fighting a dragon that has been asleep for 20 years.
The sweetest movie ever!!!!.......2007-06-12
"Reign Of Fire"
Christian Bale stars as Quinn Abercromby, a protector and a father of many people in a dragon infested world. In his childhood (staring Ben Thorton) he witnessed the scene of a fire breathing dragon brake out from under London after a millennia of sleep. It killed his engineer mother Karen (Alice Krige). Soon the world was filled with dragons, they burned everything destroyable that they could find in order to consume the ashes. Civilization was shortened to few families and few groups of people clinging to survival. Twenty years later, it is protector and father Quinn's job to keep his community alive and safe, by scaring the dragons off and leading his community to survival.
Into this desperate community comes an American named Denton Van Zan (staring Matthew McConaughey). With his team of so-called dragon specialists, they hunt down and destroy dragons. Although the work is extremely dangerous, and the survival rate of his group is very low. Using skydivers to bait the dragon into nets, the skydivers' survival rate is 17 seconds. Denton supplies them with a lot of military firepower. He demonstrates that the dragons are not supernatural creatures but living beasts that can be destroyed. However there are so many dragons all over the world that they need a better plan if they are all the species. In the end only one of the two species can survive.
Reign of Fire has an interesting story to it. The dragon effects are amazing, such as the part when the male dragon attacks the castle. But the dragons don't appear as often as I would like them to but at least they did appear. It would have been nice to see some of the destruction of civilizations rather than hear about it. They say the dragons destroy everything to consume the ash but are constantly eating living humans instead. One thing I don't get is why they don't explain how the male dragon survives under London for a millennia. Quinn's community seems so unprepared that it is hard to believe they have lasted this long. The only character that you can really remember is Denton Van Zan. Most of the other characters seem to just be there as dragon distraction. That being said, the great effects and amazing dragons go a long way in this movie, and fans of the genre will find it worth watching.
I loved this movie it is my favorite movie of all time. I have watched this movie over and over again many many times. I love the fantasy the author of this story put into it. It is an amazing story. This story has a good flow and has so many cool characters that have weird personalities, like Denton Van Zan.
I recommend this movie to anyone who loves fantasies or movies with action in it. I especially recommend this movie to dragon lovers; this movie put a perfect picture of what a dragon may look like if it really existed.

I'm with the previous reviewer.......2007-05-01
Okay, it's got great visuals; in fact, they should have had MORE HELICOPTERS and just called this Dragons Versus Helicopters, and done without the plot altogether. Because the plot is...sad to stay...stupid. And when I use that word, I don't mean just a little bit stupid, but way, way stupid. Gosh, it sure was lucky for humanity that there was only the ONE male dragon, and that the females were sort of hive support for it. Just...why did it take through the downfall of the entirely of world civilization to find this out? And why was he so easy to kill once we'd found him? And on and on.
So okay, if you're going to spend that much money on the special effects, why not blow a few more bucks on the scriptwriters and not second guess them? This is a movie to watch, for sure, but...with the sound OFF.

Description
Award-winning actor Peter Ustinov stars in this hilarious fantasy as the ghost of the legendary pirate Blackbeard. The once blackhearted scoundrel materializes in a small New England town, cursed to wander in limbo until he performs a good deed. He gets his chance when he decides to help a local college track team--that hasn't a ghost of a chance of winning! Blackbeard finds himself full of team spirit, and dispensing his own brand of invisible coaching--in this warmhearted comedy that will have you laughing from his first fade-in to his final fade-out!
Amazon.com
In the moody prologue, amid a raging storm that evokes Hollywood golden-age high-seas swashbucklers, a foreboding scroll recounts the legend of one of the bloodiest pirates in the history of the Caribbean. Leave it to Disney to turn him into a fun-loving old prankster with a whimsical side. Peter Ustinov mugs shamelessly as the bombastic but harmless apparition who renounces his wicked ways to become the mischievous school spirit of the local college, much to the annoyance of straight-arrow track coach Dean Jones. Made in the heyday of Disney's live-action family comedies, Blackbeard's Ghost is all haphazard but high-energy slapstick and squeaky-clean romance (courtesy of contemporary schoolmarm Suzanne Pleshette) performed with more gumption than grace, but there's a nostalgic innocence to the whole overplayed affair. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
Blackbeard's Ghost.......2007-06-30
Though I think this is a fun movie, I was shocked at the terrible quality of both the audio and video. Disney should be ashamed to have released anything this bad.
A similar Disney movie with Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette, "The Ugly Dachshund", was released on a DVD with excellent quality.
It's almost as if some Disney executive wanted to save production costs by issuing a few cheap editions, hoping we would by them after being baited by the nice ones. I fell for it, and I regret it.
I won't purchase any more Disney DVD's in full-screen. I'll wait for widescreen, remastered.
Funny Ghost Story.......2007-06-26
This movie has its problems, not the least of which is that this version of the DVD is in full screen and the movie was originally filmed in widescreen. This movie could also do with some restoration. However, those are details and have little to do with the movie itself, which has always been one of my favorites. Peter Ustinov is funny as Edward Teach, and the chemistry between Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette works well.
Steve Walker (Jones) is the new track coach. Jones is unfortunately booked into an inn that was produced from parts of ships used by Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard. Walker finds an old parchment and reads the words on it. The words release Blackbeard's ghost from the limbo he was trapped in, but his ghost is visible only to Jones.
The hilarity of this movie plays on the more humorous parts of movies about invisible people. Blackbeard can move objects but no one can harm him. Blackbeard decides to try and do a good dead in order to move on to the next life, and the victim of his attempts at good deeds is Steve Walker. Blackbeard's mayhem follows Steve wherever he goes, much to the amusement of the audience. Virtually every scene that Peter Ustinov appears in is funny. Indeed, Ustinov probably could have made the movie without his co-stars, but having Dean Jones as a victim of Blackbeard's good deeds likely made the script easier to write.
Blackbeard is a caricature of a carousing pirate, which means that he drinks and speaks of moderately uncouth things. I wondered whether parents should exclude small children from watching this film. I think that the cartoonish nature of Blackbeard and the fun he has are more charming than threatening and parents can always explain that ghostly pirates can do the things Blackbeard does, but not real people. Thus, I think even small children will find some humor in Blackbeard.
This movie is less than perfect, but I keep watching it. Jones has appeared in many Disney movies, but this one is one of his better appearances. Jones and Pleshette have also appeared together in several Disney films, and the chemistry between the two was at its best in this film. I am unable to say enough positive things about Peter Ustinov. Ustinov is a brilliant and natural actor who hams it up in a way that makes Blackbeard's ghost his own. Fans of pirate movies, Peter Ustinov, Suzanne Pleshette, Disney Movies, Dean Jones, and Elsa Lanchester should have this movie in their collection.
Enjoy!
GREAT MOVIE FOR ANYBODY!!!.......2007-05-07
This is a movie I remember loving as a kid. So many movies though, when you look at them again when you're older, lose some or all of their charm. This is not the case with Blackbeard's Ghost. I still laughed myself silly watching this Disney gem! The movie has got it all; swashbuckling pirates, ancient curses, goofy antics and schemes, awkward guy trying to get the self assured girl, and lots of old time Disney movie comfort factor-you know, the kind of movie you just feel really good after watching. I recommend this movie for anybody and I'm sure you'll enjoy it too.
Just Plain Fun.......2007-01-21
As usual for a Disney release, there are no extras and the print quality leaves something to be desired. Also, the plot, about the ghost of the famous pirate being brought back from purgatory to perform a good deed, is a bit coy and silly. But Peter Ustinov, full of side-wise wit and under-handed sexiness, plays Bluebeard, and that makes it worth the ride. And truth be told, he has a very good foil in the under-rated Dean Jones, whose exasperation at the supernatural intrusion into his already-hectic life is almost as funny as Ustinov's, er, intruding. Alas, Suzanne Pleshette, she of the sexy growl and the sultry eyes, is given little to do in the movie, even as Jones' love interest (it would have been a lot more fun to see her paired up with Ustinov--kiss your "G" rating goodbye).
There's also the usual covey of accomplished character actors on display, particularly Elsa Lanchester as Jones' landlady, who's trying to defend her property from gangsters trying to turn it into an off-coast casino, and the script and direction, by several of the folks involved with MARY POPPINS, ensure that the pace is brisk and the amusing banter is plentiful. Basically just a time-waster, but all time-wasters should be so amusing . . .
Excelent Movie, I Still Love it !!.......2006-11-02
This movie is as good as I remember it. Even my wife who had never seen it got a lot of laughs. The special effects may not be up to par for today's standards, but you won't mind.

Every American knows that George Washington crossed the icy Delaware River in the War of Independence, if only from Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze's famous 1851 painting. The made-for-cable-TV historical drama The Crossing, scripted by Howard Fast from his novel, corrects at least one piece of historical invention--Washington did not stand and pose for the occasion of Leutze's portrait--but, more importantly, it frames the event in the real-life drama that made it a decisive moment of American history. Jeff Daniels makes a fine General George Washington, the quiet, dignified, and increasingly desperate leader of the volunteer Continental Army. By December 1776, six months after the Declaration of Independence was signed, the tired and hungry army had retreated to the far banks of the Delaware River, a mere fraction of the original 20,000-strong force. Knowing that defeat means the end of the revolution, Washington takes the offensive in a dangerous surprise attack that turns the tide of the war. Like the sprawling Civil War epic Gettysburg, The Crossing takes one incident of the Revolutionary War and digs into the whys and wherefores that make it vital history. It lacks scope and spectacle--major battles appear more like modest skirmishes--and lapses into patriotic fervor at times, but it brims with rich historical detail and comes alive with the stories of officers, soldiers, and a very human George Washington. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
Daniels is a Great George Washington.......2007-05-25
Jeff Daniels is a very versatile actor, attested to in his role as George Washington. The next time I watch this it will immediately be followed by "Dumb and Dumber".
Inspiring depiction of the first decisive victory of Continental Army.......2007-04-15
This film was inspiring and informative, makes me proud to be an American and grateful to our courageous Continental Army under the command of Gen. George Washington. How much they sacrificed and suffered to win our freedom! This film should be required in the curriculum of all middle and high school students.
Patriotic Revival.......2007-02-27
Good films on the Revolution are hard to find. This one was packed with action and the drama of Washington's last roll of the dice when the odds were so severly stacked against him. The film is truly worthwhile, if only to further instill some patriotism in your kids and remind yourself what our ancestors went through to gain our independence. And Washington would be a hard character to play: unless your Jeff Daniels. He nails it and truly captured the heroic aspects of that great man.
"E" for effort - BUT NOT FOR KIDS.......2007-02-14
There are some historical inaccurracies in this film, to be sure. The Wikipedia entry for the movie has most of them. And like most movies dealing with any war, there are not enough men on the screen to portray the actual number of soldiers involved. Washington had more than 2000 troops when he went into Trenton, up against about the same number of Hessians. Of course, without computer-generated graphics, there's no way a made-for-television movie can portray that.
I have to question the casting of Jeff Daniels as Washington. I know Washington was a flesh and blood person, but somehow Daniels (or perhaps the script he had to work with) does not communicate the gravitas that must have personified Washington. This was a man chosen practically unanimously by the Continental Congress to lead the army. Daniels does not come across as that sort of person.
Although it is known that Washington had a temper, especially in extremis, most of the time Daniels' Washington comes across as merely petulant or even bitchy.
The dialogue between most of the characters seemed at times to be pretty anachronistic. American screenwriters should take a lesson from their British counterparts (Andrew Davies, for example) on how to write 18th Century dialogue that sounds authentic but not stilted or phoney.
Finally, THIS MOVIE IS NOT FOR CHILDREN. We watched it with our 7 and 9 year olds because they're studying the Revolution in school. We were dismayed by the bad language, sexual references and the over-the-top bloodletting. Why did the director think it a good idea to show closeups of bayoneting and swords going all the way through people? Showing it is one thing -- but closeups? C'mon! At least the DVD should have indicated what's in store so parents could be informed.
Surprizingly Good.......2007-01-16
I think Jeff Danials did a surprizingly good job of portraying the hard-to-cast Washington. I wish I had seen more of Glover's boat work getting the canon and horses across, but all in all, it had a good feel about it.

With a story that's too flimsy to support its running time, this road-movie comedy has plenty of problems, but at its best it's a surprisingly inspired vehicle for the clever teaming of Tim Robbins and Martin Lawrence. Robbins plays an addled advertising executive who comes home early one day and discovers his wife in bed with his boss. To make matters worse, he's later carjacked by a struggling, unemployed family-man-turned-petty-thief (Lawrence), and that's when he loses his cool completely. He takes the carjacker hostage and recruits him on a road-trip scheme of revenge against his wife and boss. Plotting to break into his boss's high-security vault, Robbins gets a criminal assist from Lawrence, but they're also on the run from another pair of would-be thieves who trail them to the vault's location. The routine plot is occasionally limp and sluggish, but writer-director Steve Oedekerk (who makes a wacky cameo appearance as a security guard) mines comedy gold during several scenes that detour from the plot for the sake of sheer lunacy. Robbins and Lawrence have great comedic chemistry (if you can tolerate Lawrence's constant profanity), and although the movie ends on a false note with some unlikely turns of fate, it's definitely good for more than a few solid laughs. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Mindlessly Hilarious.......2007-06-27
A man comes home early and catches his wife in bed with his boss, just after his boss asked him to take a meeting so he could "get lucky" with her. Having been deeply in love with his, wife the emotional backlash is not insignificant. When he finds himself at gun point in an attempted robbery, the maelstrom that follows makes up the plotline of the movie.
"Nothing to Lose" is nothing of not predictable. Even though I won't mention how it all pans out, anyone could predict it anwyay. Despite that, the movie is still gut-wrenching in its hilarity and zany situations. The scene where Nick asks a store clerk what was scarier, (his cool and calm approach or Terence's loud, profanity pumping approach), was a hoot. Especially when the clerk tried to make Nick feel better about himself.
For a good laugh, this is a hard movie to beat. Tim Robbins is great and Martin Lawrence even manages to be less annoyingly squealy than he normally is. Like other reviewers, I love this movie and have seen it a number of times. Want a good laugh? See this one!
Extremely hilarious.......2007-04-29
Watching Tim Robbins dance with his shoe on fire while trying to get a spider off of him led me to the hardest I've ever laughed in my life. Martin Lawrence's character's response to it as well as the back ground music made it even funnier. I had tears in my eyes and my side hurt.
PLEASE DONT KILL ME FREAKY JASON!.......2007-04-06
THIS IS DEFINITELY TOP TEN FUNNIEST MOVIES I HAVE SEEN! MARTIN LAWRENCE AND TIM ROBBINS WERE WELL MATCHED IN THIS COMEDY. MY FAVORTIES SCENES ARE AS FOLLOW:
1. WHEN NICK AND T. ARE FIGHTING OVER THE CREDIT CARD AND NICK DOES THIS WEIRD ELBOW TO FACE HIT ON T.
2. THE SCENE WITH THE SPIDER AND NICKS SHOE CATCHING ON FIRE AND T CATCHES IT ALL ON CAMERA
3. WHERE T. ACCIDENTLY SHOOTS NICK IN THE ARM( MORE LIKE GRAZE )
4. AND OF COURSE THE SCENE IN THE STORE AND NICK ASKING THE OLD MAN CLERK WHO WAS MORE SCARY
ALL IN ALL GREAT FILM TO HAVE!
So Hillarious.......2007-02-28
This movie is so Hilliarious. It SHOULD be a nothing to loose 2.
My favorite scene in the Blocbuster Movie is where. Tim Robbins got his foot on fire, and dancin like an Idiot.
The other scene is here where both Martin and Tim Robbins Robs the old mans store for some flashlights. And Tim Asks the other Old guy who was more scarier,
Tons of laughs on this
A very funny movie.......2007-01-30
Too much adult content to let kids watch it, but one of the funniest movies I have ever seen.
Martin Lawrence is awesome in it, as well as Tim Robbins.

Before the action-oriented "buddy movie" formula settled into place in the 1980s and 1990s with the Lethal Weapon films, Walter Hill's 48 HRS. presented a much more irreverent and politically incorrect version of the genre. Eddie Murphy made an auspicious film debut alongside veteran Nick Nolte's consummate performance as a worn cop. Murphy plays a convict on a two-day furlough from prison to help capture his former partner (James Remar). The intense animosity between his character and Nolte's impatient detective is rude and violent--albeit in a comic way--and the film's racist and sexist banter is so ubiquitous that some viewers might be turned off. (This early, raw Murphy is not the Murphy of The Nutty Professor.) Then again, sometimes deliberate overkill is funny in itself, which is certainly closer to Hill's intention. There are a couple of scenes for the ages in this film, especially Murphy's single-handed shutdown of the action in a redneck bar. --Tom Keogh

Funny movie.......2007-05-07
if you want to laugh.. this is the movie, not for young children
Heres your G***amn dinner.......2007-03-13
I loved this movie. It was very funny. It was the best when Eddie Murphy went into the redneck bar :-)
Great Movie!.......2007-02-18
Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy play off each other really well in this movie - Nolte with his loud, gritty voice and Murphy with his suave demeanor. This movie and Another 48 Hours are both worth watching more than once. I definitely recommend this movie as worth owning.
Eddie Murphy's film debut.......2006-12-04
Eddie Murphy's popularity on NBC's Saturday Night Live led to a film career. The same applied to his predecessors such as Dan Aykroyd, the late John Belushi, the late Gilda Radner,Chevy Chase and Bill Murray. Here is Murphy's starring film debut overall, opposite Nick Nolte about a cop and his apprentice about to apprehend wanted criminals. Plain clothes cop Jack Cates(Nolte) and his apprentice Reggie Hammond(Murphy) are just the right pair for the job. There was a catch:they had only 48 HRS. to do the job. Also Jack has been having disputes with his girlfriend Patti(Annette O'Toole). However, the police job landed Reggie in jail since he was a criminal himself and an escaped convict. Great support from the late Brion James who was Jack's co-worker Sgt. Ben Kehoe. This popular film inspired the 1990 sequel ANOTHER 48 HRS. In between the two films,Murphy starred in other popular favorites such as TRADING PLACES with Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis,BEST DEFENSE with the late Dudley Moore,BEVERLY HILLS COP,THE GOLDEN CHILD,BEVERLY HILLS COP 2,COMING TO AMERICA and HARLEM NIGHTS with the late Richard Pryor. Also in between,Murphy became a recording artist and released an album in 1985 spawning the Top 20 hit PARTY ALL THE TIME. This film and the sequel were directed by Walter Hill and distributed by Paramount Pictures.
An Expensive Suit + A Porsche Does Not =Class!.......2006-10-27
This is a very tedious and tiresome "buddy movie" which were in fashion in the early 1980's. There is a stupid plot about money hidden away and Nick Nolte makes the very astute observation that Eddie's Murphy's character is still a "lowlife" no matter how he dresses or what car he drives. This movie was also made at the time when men stopped shaking hands and started hugging each other. Perhaps Hollywood was trying to send a "Subliminal Message" ?I give this movie 5 stars because Eddie is on the hunt for "trim" ( as he so delicately suggests to a woman)which is what any normal released con would do and that is about the only believable thing in this trash.

Making no attempt at factual accuracy, Ned Kelly is still an engaging action film with its heart in the right place. You don't need to be a student of Australian history to know that a movie about the life of the notorious folk hero and outlaw is not going to be a light-hearted romp through the outback. Injustice, persecution, and unlawful imprisonment are the meat of his story, all presented here with not too much of a rose-tinted perspective amid generous doses of obligatory action. Rebellious teenager Ned Kelly (Heath Ledger) is wrongfully imprisoned for stealing a horse and, when he returns to the bosom of his large Irish family, finds that the police won't let him go straight. After being accused of a crime he didn't commit, Kelly is left with no option but to go on the run. Accompanied by his gang (among them Orlando Bloom) he robs banks to survive and also to gather the money to free his family from prison. There is some considerable romanticizing of the story and the man himself, due in part to Ledger's affable Robin Hood-esque working-class hero portrayal. Bloom is wide-eyed and daring as Kelly's main man, and Naomi Watts as his married mistress has the thankless task of breaking up some great action sequences to play the unnecessary love interest. Originally filmed as a Mick Jagger vehicle in 1970. --Kristen Bowditch

Where there is action, there is reaction.......2007-04-28
This story is a very moving story about injustice and one man not taking it anymore. I had no idea what this movie was about when I started watching it, and was quiet suprised about the story and acting. See this movie and besure that you watch the special features about the real Ned Kelly. I recommend this movie to anyone that likes movies based on actual facts of history.
a moving story.......2007-04-12
I originally wanted to give Ned Kelly a rating of 3 or 4 stars, since it did have its fair share of scenes that dragged, but the last 20 minutes of the film were powerful, emotional and satisfying for people who like action scenes. The ending was great. Naomi Watts is hot, like always. Worth watching.
Great Movie.......2006-11-11
In 1880, on 11 of November, NED KELLY was hanged at Melbourne jail. 126 years ago!!! So I decided to watch the movie once again. This one is one of my favourites.
The Absolute Corruption of Absolute Power.......2006-04-19
On its face, this 2004 version of the Ned Kelly story is an old-fashioned western shoot 'em up, albeit played out in the "wild west" of Victorian era Australia. In fact, I found that to be part of this film's appeal, in that it provides a rare and entertaining look at how similar life was "over there" at that time to those most of us have seen a million times in tales of the American west.
That said, Director Gregor Jordan's Kelly tale is also an allegory demonstrating again how easily a government with absolute authority and no valid system of checks and balances can be used maliciously and abusively by a corrupt few. Given the abuses of power by members of today's American government, with a corrupt core even working to override and ignore the checks and balances supposedly assured by our system, it's a good reminder of what can happen to any individual -- especially someone of unpopular origin -- when circumstances are less than perfect, as they often are.
As to the accuracy of the film's storyline, good luck determining that. While it seems to be reasonably accurate, if romanticized to accent Kelly's folk appeal, at this point it's hard to say who was right, who was wrong, and to what degree. Then again, that's a great reason to buy this DVD - it includes a Special Feature about the real Ned Kelly for more perspective on the now century-and-a-half debate over whether he was just a rowdy criminal or a Robin Hood revolutionary standing up for the common man. Probably a little of both.
At the very least, the film is well acted both by its primaries - Heath Ledger, Orlando Bloom, Naomi Watts, and Geoffrey Rush - and the many terrific Australian character actors in support roles. Nicely done all around.
Ned Kelly is not just a story for Australians.......2006-03-25
Ned Kelly is the story of legendary Australian figure, Edward 'Ned' Kelly's transformation from petty criminal to outlawed revolutionary.
One the most impressive aspects of this film is amount of attention lavished on accurate wardrobe, set design, location, and language. Films rarely realize he goal of completely transportaing a viewer to a different time and place. The oppression of the Australian Irish by their British overlords is starkly documented, laying the foundation for the events to unfold and inspiring a certain sympathy for Ned and his gang.
The film boasts an amazing cast which includes: Heath Ledger, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, Naomi Watts, and Rachel Griffiths.
I had read "My Sunshine," the book this film was marginally based on, and was familiar with the story of Ned Kelly prior to watching the film. Since few Americans are acquainted with the legend of Ned Kelly I would suggest doing a litte reading first. The
IronOutlaw site has the most thorough background on Ned, The Kelly Gang, and the true events the picture is based on.

Another 48 HRS.
The boys are back in town, but they're wearing their carbon-paper suits in this frantic but not nearly as funny sequel to the action-comedy hit. The first time around, the combination of Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte had the element of surprise going for it: Who expected these two to have chemistry? This time, chemistry is virtually all they have in a veritable rehash of the first film. What plot there is has to do with Nolte's needing Murphy (who is just out of jail) to help him clear his own name and save his job on the police force. Director Walter Hill is back in place, but this time the script is the work of action hack Jeb Stuart and the movie barely gives Murphy room to unleash his comic riffs; when he does, we're expecting them (though he's still entertaining). --Marshall Fine

anamorphic widescreen.......2007-05-30
this double feature DVD improves on the original DVD letterboxed video with anamorphic widescreen. video is a little soft but I remember the theatrical picture was a little soft so this is acceptable. these are good action movies but why the disrespect in not releasing these movies with remastered video/audio, features and commentary? these movies were at least as important as Beverly Hills Cops and Trading Places to a young Eddie Murphy's career and Beverly Hills Cop got the box set treatment.
