If you're among those who thinks that statuesque Sigourney Weaver is one of the best American actresses going, then A Map of the World is for you--it's a showcase for one terrific, Oscar-worthy performance. As Wisconsin farm wife and school nurse Alice Goodwin, Weaver projects an awkward, difficult woman--a quintessential outsider, too smart for comfort, at home in neither her own skin nor in life. In contrast to the Good Housekeeping perfection that flows from serene best friend Teresa (Julianne Moore), Alice's house is a mess, her kids hate her, and her ineffectual husband (David Strathairn) has never gotten used to the way she blurts out uncensored, often caustic truths.

In the time it takes for Alice--while baby-sitting--to find her bathing suit and glance at a map of an imaginary world she colored as a child, one of Teresa's daughters drowns. It's the first catastrophe of two--she's subsequently accused of child abuse--that mark the end of the Goodwins' world. Ostracized by her neighbors, jailed with "baby-killers," Alice slowly reconstitutes, drawing unexpected penance and community from her stripped-down environment. It's an utterly fascinating process, watching Weaver's character develop emotional focus and anchorage--as wife, mother, woman.

A Map of the World challenges us--refreshingly--with unpredictable narrative turns, from domestic drama to gritty slice of prison life to romantic interlude to courtroom climax and more. Along the way, this fine adaptation of Jane Hamilton's popular novel delivers insights into what it means to be fallibly human--as well as strong supporting performances by Strathairn and Moore especially, plus Arliss Howard and Chloƫ Sevigny. --Kathleen Murphy

Product Description

Two Explorers take an incredible expedition into the blistering Arabian Desert and turn up what many scholars believe to be one of the greatest discoveries in history...the real Mt. Sinai, the holy mountain on which Moses received the Ten Commandments. This program tells their amazing story how they crawl into forbidden military installations, and use night vision goggles to avoid being detected as they pursue their mission and discover over a dozen significant remnants still remaining at the site. The explorers embark on a journey that would change their lives forever..finding remarkable evidence that confirms the Bible as historically accurate. Weaving together real life adventure historical research and exclusive never-before-released footage, this exciting adventure leaps off the screen to document a story you'll never forget.

4 out of 5 stars Not the one looking for but still good material.......2007-04-10

As a believer in Jesus and the Bible, it is exciting to see physical evidence to the Old testament history. I love the footage and was amazed at what the explorers faced. The actual DVD I was looking for was more detailed and mentioned things this video didn't so I was a little disappointed. But overall, I'm glad I have in.

3 out of 5 stars Go for the Original Discovery DVD instead of this one !!!.......2007-03-10

The DVD titled "The Search for the Real Mt. Sinai" is not the original discovery though whatever shown in it is authentic. The site was first discovered by amateur biblical archeologist Mr.Ron Wyatt who is also credited with the discovery of Noah's Ark. It was he who first entered Saudi Arabia along with his two sons without proper papers and went on to discover the site. However, he and his sons were soon arrested by the Saudi authorities on the charges of espionage for the state of Israel. They were later released by the authorities after three months when Ron Waytt was able to convince the Saudi authorities that he had found the real "Mount Sinai". However, the evidence they had collected was confiscated by the authorities. After the incident, the Saudi authorities converted the entire area into an archeological site and fenced the whole area fearing that the site might lead to political instability as it would attract attention from Christians and Jewish people which they probably deemed undesirable for a Muslim state. However, after some years, Ron did manage to get the videos of Mt. Sinai and its surroundings with the help of a friend. It is only after this that the biblical explorers Bob Cornuke and Larry Williams visited the site and brought the evidence. If you notice in this DVD, the archeologists Bob and Larry state that some persons had gone in Saudi before and got arrested with their videos confiscated. They were talking about Ron.

If you really want to have more in-depth information about Mount Sinai, I strongly recommend that you go to the website of Wyatt Musuem (just search it on any search engine like yahoo or google. Not being able to mention it due to restrictions) to get the original and more authentic footage (without any recreations as in this DVD) and see for yourself. The evidence available on "The Exodus" DVD on the said site is much vast and the onsite footage much detailed. The "Search for the Real Mt. Sinai" DVD supplements little information when compared to "The Exodus" DVD. However, as always is the case, the original things generally get subdued by their duplicates.

Not only this, the above site also contains DVDs on discoveries of Noah's Ark, Exodus, Sodom & Gomorrah and Ark of the Covenant. After viewing these DVDs, I really believe that the God had chosen Ron Wyatt to unearth all the major discoveries, as all the discoveries made by Mr.Ron Wyatt are incredible and possible only with the understanding given by the LORD. I feel priviledged and blessed to have witnessed the proof of God's mighty work in the past and also invite you to share the evidence put forth by God.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining with issues.......2007-01-09

This was pretty interesting but I felt it was also a bit superficial and amaturish.

OK: The site commonly believed to be Mount Sinai does not jive with the description in the Bible. Among other things, it has no cave, no evidence of springs, etc. etc. So far I'm with them.

So we look for an alternate site. The two "hosts" of the video mention that there are several other places that have been suggested as alternate sites for Mount Sinai. We are never told what these alternatives are or why they are believed to be the location. Instead we go straight to a location in Saudi Arabia.

Now, Saudi Arabia is not an easy country to get into unless you are on a Hajj or a guest worker. So, these guys forge a letter with Saudi governmental letterhead and a copied signature of the king. Not a real smart idea and, I'm pretty sure, illegal.

Anyhow, these two guys find everything they expect to find at the Mountain of Moses. They also find petroglyphs of "Egyptian" cattle not indiginous to the region. Unfortunately the petroglyphs are not carved in Egyptian style and appear to predate the Egyptian period.

These guys are convinced that the Saudi government is trying to hide the fact that this mountain is Sinai because there is a fence around it marked by the Ministry of Antiquities. Well, this location clearly has some archeological value and they probably don't want people wandering around it and damaging it... such as our two Indiana Jones types do, climbing to the peak and smashing open a rock.

The two also claim to see an ancient battlefield near the base of the mountain (but we are not shown it on video. What obvious evidence would there be of a bronze-era battlefield after 3,000 years?).

All that aside, the idea that the Saudis would try to hide the mountain for religious reasons is proposterous. Moses is considered an Islamic prophet and such a site would be a source of pride for them.

If these two had ever attempted to get in touch with the Ministry of Antiquities they would probably tell them what evidence they have found there.

All the aside, the film relies a lot on reconstructions of events and a handful of experts speaking on-camera. I liked the narration immensely, done by Mr. John Rhys-Davies I believe. He played Salah in all those Indiana Jones movies.

5 out of 5 stars Super Movie: Don't Miss this One!.......2006-09-26

This DVD is absolutely incredible. It is the documentation (with footage and photos) of the real Mt. Sinai within Saudi Arabia. This is the real thing, not some bogus claims. The two men featured in the DVD retraced the Exodus according to the Biblical criteria, found the Red Sea crossing point, and eventually snuck into Saudi Arabia. They continued on their journey and came to what the locals call the Mountain of Moses where they found (and filmed) the acutal altar the children of Israel constructed to worship the golden calf (with Eyptian drawings of the calf on the altar), the rock that split and evidence of there having been a large reservoir of water flowing from it (in an area that gets 1/2 inch of rain every ten years), the boundary markers Moses had set up, the remnant of the altar, and even a scorched top on the mountain!

To add "truth is stranger than fiction" suspense, the area is fenced off and lightly guarded by the Saudi government (the political ramifications of Moses and the Israelites having been in Saudi Arabia at one time is a red hot issue).

This material is an excellent source to document the Exodus and Numbers accounts. Its apologetical value is yet to be appreciated. You simply must get this one!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Sigourney fans.......2007-07-05

This film was hugely overlooked and underappreciated. The performances are honest and very real. The story of a woman who, through a series of horrific incidents, misconceptions and misunderstandings, loses everything including herself. Sigourney Weaver portrays this broken down human being with humility and elegance. Weaver is all at once, strong, emotionally unavailable, depressed, sad, scarey, loving, supportive and charged. This is an Oscar performance if there ever was one. The style in which Weaver illuminates her character is completely different than any other performance in any of her other films (Aliens, Gorillas In The Mist, The Ice Storm).
The story is challenging, but the rewards are fascinating.

3 out of 5 stars Good movie - A bit frustrating.......2007-03-13

I have to agree with those who thought this movie was well done. I also have to side with those who found it frustrating and confusing at certain times. I can't blame this frustration and confusion on Sigourney Weaver though. I had to place it on the direction. There were times I felt as though the character was intentionally trying to punish herself. In the courtroom, the visitor's section of the jail. Maybe it's me, but I just didn't know at times which way the direction of the character was going.

The film is worth seeing and, despite what others may say, the actors played their parts very well.

3 out of 5 stars Pare it down.......2005-06-12

Sigourney Weaver gives an excellent performance as Alice Goodwin, a woman who undergoes trying times when a friend's child dies while under her care, followed soon after by charges of child abuse against her by members of the small community in which she lives. This is a well-made, sincere film, but I couldn't help feeling that it was just trying to pile on too much drama. I was frustrated by the introduction of the child abuse angle and Alice's subsequent prison stay because I felt that the film had never dealt adequately with the horror of the dead child and all of the emotional consequences of it. The parents simply moved away so we could get into the next crisis before their return. Jane Hamilton probably handled this more successfully in her novel, which was the basis of this film, because she didn't have the time constraints of a movie.

4 out of 5 stars excellent.......2005-03-25

I honestly found this movie to be disarming, mostly because of Sigourney Weaver's performance as an unapologetic and perhaps too honest and too direct woman whose very regular life unravels under tragic consequences and the scrutiny that comes afterward. Weaver plays Alice, a school nurse, wife of a Wisconsin farmer, who comes off as coarse, abrasive and unmannered. This makes very little difference at first, except that she might be something of an outsider. This, however, bears a great deal of difference, when, while babysitting for her best friend Theresa (Julianne Moore), one of Theresa's children drowns. Ultimately Alice is scrutinized following this accident, and later is held legally accountable for charges of child abuse made against her.

The story delves very deeply into the three-dimensional characters in this film; a psychological and adult film that probes various dimensions of its character's lives very effectively. Weaver's Alice particularly has the greatest burden to bear, the most weakness and frailty but at the same time the most strength. She is stripped to bare bones (from a psychological standpoint) in jail, and though she has to be strong and resolute to live there, the aftermath of the events reveal immediate impacts on her family (her husband has been content to run the farm and leave the daily life business to her; suddenly he is confronted with rearing their children, whom he hardly seems to know, and coming up with ways to handle the mounting legal bills, etc.) Relationships are tested in the film (both relationships people have with themselves as well as relationships between people), and the performances delivered by Weaver, David Strathairn as her husband and Moore as the grieving mother, Theresa, are deeply felt, human performances.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping story, great music, few flaws.......2004-11-04

I actually bought this movie because I enjoyed the soundtrack CD by Pat Metheny so much, and because the reviews here on Amazon are favorable. I got more than I expected from this movie. It's so good that Metheny's music is overwhelmed by the drama. I won't go into summarizing the plot, as several other reviewers have done that very well.

If only Sigourney had kept her clothes on, this would be a perfect film for almost the whole family. She delivers an excellent performance, as do Julianne Moore and David Strathairn. The gratuitous sex scenes and home sex video banter amongst the couples should have been left on the cutting room floor to improve the movie. I saw enough of Sigourney in the movie Alien...not that I'm complaining!

This movie highlights how pack-driven we as a people can be in damning innocent people. You see it often in newspapers and magazines. That said, if I were in her place I would be racked with guilt at having let the little girl out of my sight long enough for her to reach that body of water next to their house. It's not like the pond just suddenly appeared at dawn. Heck, a fence only costs a couple of hundred bucks to put up yourself.

Buy it, enjoy it, have a good cry, but keep your finger ready on the fast forward button to skip the aging-actress skin scenes.

5 out of 5 stars Very well done.......2007-05-07

What a relief not to have some annoyingly pert "host" on camera--such as in the Globe Trekker series--get in the way of telling us about this wonderful country. The film is very well conceived, dwelling first on Buenos Aires, easily the most cosmopolitan city in Latin America and home to about one third of the country's entire population, then on the Pampas and finally on Patagonia and the remote south of Argentina. The narration is full of useful information. The English subtitles are fine, though inevitably they cannot match the superb literary quality of the original Spanish. I've been to Argentina many times and think that this is an excellent, succinct introduction to the country.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but a little off.......2007-01-11

This film is excellent, what with its scenery and narration. However, a Spaniard narrates it and it seems a little odd, given that it's about Argentina. If you can get past that, it's a very comprehensive and panoramic view of this wonderful country.

5 out of 5 stars 3 Sections: Buenos Aries, La Pampa, Tierra del Fuego.......2005-12-27

There are 3 sections to the DVD: Buenos Aires (25 minutes), La Pampa (24 minutes), and Tiera del Fuego (23 minutes).

Buenos Aries (the first 12 sections) covers a number of areas of he city, as well as some cultural things like the Tango, theatre, and training matadores.

La Pampa (sections 13-17) shows cattle ranching. It would never get past the SPCA, due to the callous cruelty to animals involved in "receational sports". But if you plan to travel there and stay on a cattle ranch - this does reflect the Spanish attitude toward animals.

Tierra del Fuego (sections 18-26) has good shots of the Straights of Magallen, including seals and penguins, while giving the history. There is a section on how the settlers exterminated the natives and were working on doing likewise to the ecology. There's a great section on a train ride down there, the town of Ushuaia, and some present-day industries like lumber and sheep.

Narration in Spanish; subtitles in Spanish, English, French, Italian. On the computer, Japanese subtitles are listed, altho don't seem to work. Good for learning Spanish.

I think this may have been one of the first of the series completed, especially consdiering it has 3 sections.

If you get the "Enhanced CD" instead, and it's the same one I got, it includes this DVD, and a disc of "Danzas" which I gave only a cursory listen to the beginning of a couple of tracks - not my kind of music. But amazon.com has audio samples, so you can see if you'd like to get it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent video - wonderful memories.......2004-08-05

I was born in Argentina but raised in the USA. I went back for several years in the late 1970s and enjoyed my time there.

In looking for a nice video memory of this great country and, in particular, Buenos Aires, I purchased this video. It is very well done and the video is excellent and informative.

Seeing the old areas I used to inhabit was fun and the video actually was quite detailed in its description of certain areas.

If you're looking for info on Argentina, or, like me, just rekindling old memories, this is a must-have DVD.

2 out of 5 stars DVD (71 minutes) + CD (14 tracks).......2006-01-22

The DVD has 3 sections:

(1)Music (shows instruments) and dance (ranges from Mexico thru Central America & South America) - 24 minutes - has some interesting info, but basicly all you see is the colorful dresses and a few dance movements.

(2) Writers & poets (23 minutes) - 11 writers in various countries, shows talking heads for most, but a couple have other video with the voice in the background. A Cuban poet recites a poem while shots of Cuba are shown.

(3) Craftsmen (Artesanias) (24 minutes) - ceramics, woodwork, weaving, leatherwork, gold & silversmithing. Unfortunately, it sounds as if they have found the only place where a given craft is done. However, there is woodworking, weaving, and leatherwork in northern Ecuador, as well as miniature-making in Calderon, near Quito (using bread dough, not clay), and gold & silversmithing near Cuenca. I'm sure there are many additional instances of such craftwork thruout Latin America.

The CD has 14 tracks by name groups (Los Kjarkas, Savia Andina, Rupay, Mallku, etc) - some I don't recognize but sound like there are from other than the Andes, which is what I know best.

I give it two stars because
(1)the dancing does little more than identify which city/country it is in, and, uh, the cameraman isn't very politically correct in some of what he choose to shoot.
(2) my interst in "literature" is zilch, and the track on Jorge Amado is R-rated (my rating)
(3) not enough information is given on the craftwork
(4) I don't care that much for most of the music, which is arranged for stage presentation, it's like a painting of food rather than something nutritious. (my rating)

3 out of 5 stars 2 sections - Quito (30 min.), Galapagos (20 min).......2005-12-27

Despite the list of "titles", there are 2 sections.

First is Quito (30 minutes)which spends about 10 minutes on the artist Guayasimin (unless you like Modern Art, a waste), and wastes almost as much time going thru the art inside some of the churches. But there are some great shots of El Trole (the trolley bus), the Old City, Zona del Sur, and even the area of the new city around Amazonas; a brief look at the Otavalo market (which is at least two hours north, even tho it is presented as being "part of Quito"), and a good look at (and I think from ) El Virgin del Quito.

Second is Los Galapagos (20 minutes) with shots of the critters and background narration of the history - often the history has nothing to do with the video, so consdier spending separate sessions watching and listening.

Narration in Spanish; subtitles in Spanish, English, French, Italian. On the computer, Japanese subtitles are listed, altho don't seem to work. Good for learning Spanish.

Suggest considering the "enhanced CD", which is actually two separate discs - this DVD plus a reasonably good Andean music CD by Mallku de los Andes (which was also releasted separately).

Note: remember, the time it takes arriving at the airport, going thru customs, doing any monetary exchange, collecting luggage, getting a taxi and arriving at the hotel is probably about the same as the section on Quito takes. To try to cover the Jungle, Cuenca, Guyaquil, etc, in the same DVD with Quito and the Galapagos is to have very little of anything

4 out of 5 stars 3 Sections: Lima, Cuzco, the Sacred Valley.......2005-12-28

There three sections: Lima (24 minutes), Cuzco (22 minutes), El Valle Sagrado (28 minutes) This is NOT what the "menu" would lead you to expect.

Lima spends time on the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral, Bolivar and San Martin, and then gets into a LOT of churches. It definately seems to think the only important thing in the country are the Spanish and their descendants (well, maybe some other Europeans). The only non-European is shown begging by one of the churches.

Cuzco has a lot of shots of the original inhabitants, simply because there are a lot of them there. There are a lot of shots of the city itself, and the markets. There is a shot of a pair of street musicians and the music continues under the next bit of narration - remember, things like Social Security are only for the invaders and their descendants. Everyone else has to earn a living somehow. There is an excessive quantity of time spent on the huge edifaces the Spanish built on the foundations of the earier Houses of Worship, but that's where the people who made the DVD were coming from. There is also a section of a ceremony at Sacsaywaman, and a short bit with the camera at an angle that is not the point of view of any of the participants but appeals to European males like the cameraman.

El Valle Sagrado (tracks 3-12) starts with the descendants of the original inhabitants harvesting grain and taking care of llamas, and takes a look at classical goldwork and pottery. Then there is a good series of glimpses of towns between Cuzco and Machu Picchu - it is done as if it is a straight trip, but a check of the map says the camera and crew made two day-trips on different roads. Then there is the train to Machu Picchu, and a look around. Narration includes info on the discovery of Machu Picchu. This section focuses more on what there is to see, rather than making a tour of churches.

Narration in Spanish; subtitles in Spanish, English, French, Italian. On the computer, Japanese subtitles are listed, altho don't seem to work. Good for learning Spanish.

This is the same DVD as the "Enhanced CD", which is actually two separate discs, the DVD, and a CD of Peruvian Valses - if you like them (I don't especially).

3 out of 5 stars A History of Peru.......2005-12-14

The dvd was alright if you are really interested in church history in Peru. I was looking for a dvd with more information about the land and the people from a more cultural perspective(hearing them speak ,ect.) I wasn't interested in seeing the inside of all the churches..., and hearing about the schools, and government, ect. It gets better at the end, showing how some of the native people live. For the price, overall, its worth taking a look at.

4 out of 5 stars Two sections: Bogota (22 minutes), Coffee (30 minutes).......2005-12-10

There are two sections: Bogota (22 minutes) and Coffee (30 minutes).

First section, Bogota - altho like the other DVDs in the series, it has excessive attention devoted to things imposed by the spanish (painting, theatre, bullfighting, lititure in Spanish), you do get to see some intersting things like processing cut flowers for export

The second section includes picking and transporting coffee beans, processing them, sending them to where they are graded, tested, tasted, and repackaged for export. ("Jardin" is a town in the coffee belt.) The Coffee section is of the most interesting sections in the 6 DVDs in the series I've seen.

A reminder - there are hardly any indiginous people left in Colombia.

Narration in Spanish; subtitles in Spanish, English, French, Italian. On the computer, Japanese subtitles are listed, altho don't seem to work. Good for learning Spanish.

This is the same DVD as the "Enhanced CD", which is actually two separate discs, the DVD, and a CD of music which isn't really my style.

1 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor and stay away from this one.......2005-11-02

Unless you are from Bogota, do yourself a favor and stay away from this DVD. It's Bogota, Bogota and Bogota, and small filmstrips of other regions. If you would like to know more about Colombia, stay away from this title, there might be others out there that might be worth it. On a side note, this film was made by Spaniards, which probably explains why they couldn't get farther than Bogota.

Book Description

Two explorers take an incredible expedition into the blistering Arabian desert and turn up what many scholars believe to be one of the greatest discoveries in history...the real Mount Sinai, the holy mountain on which Moses received the Ten Commandments. This program tells their amazing story how they crawl into forbidden military installations, and use night vision goggles to avoid being detected as they pursue their mission and discover over a dozen significant remnants still remaining at the site. The explorers embark on a journey that would change their lives forever...finding remarkable evidence that confirms the Bible as historically accurate. Weaving together real life adventure, historical research and exclusive never-before-released footage this exciting adventure leaps off the screen to document a story you'll never forget.

5 out of 5 stars "A Classic".......2006-11-18

Other reviewers have stated the essence of why this is a classic DVD, and so I will not repeat what most of them have basically concluded.
When I saw this, I couldn't help but be grimly amused by the lack of coverage this information has received by the mainstream news outlets, which, while proclaiming their objectivity, filter out data that would make both them and many of their readers highly uncomfortable. This in itself speaks volumes.
I have purchased and given several of these DVD's to friends.
As to the veracity of the clams of Bob and Larry, ask yourself this.
Why would Saudi Arabia create a military base and fence off the area?
They're not stupid. If they ever decided to launch an attack against Israel, what better place to fire missles from? The Israelis would think twice before trying to take out this installation with a massive missle counter-attack because in so doing, they would risk destroying such a revered site.
It would be interesting to know if any global satellite pictures showing the scorched peak in this region have been taken and are available to the public via the internet. If so, a skeptic could get visual evidence for himself.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Most Important Videos of All Time: Get It!.......2006-07-11

3 out of 5 stars Too Good to be True?.......2005-06-27

Many years ago Ron Wyatt, an intrepid explorer, claimed to have found the real Mount Sinai, becoming one of many men to have made this claim. But this was only one of his many claims. He also claimed to have found Noah's Ark, chariot wheels from the Red Sea, The Ark of the Covenant, the ruins of Sodom and Gomorrah, and even the hole into which Jesus' cross was placed. While Wyatt has largely been exposed as a fraud, some people continue to believe that he did find clues leading to the location of the mountain on which God gave His Law to Moses.

Enter two American adventurers. Several years ago Bob Cornuke, a former police officer and Larry Williams, a commodities trader, embarked on an adventure to find the real Mount Sinai. Borrowing from Wyatt's data, and moving forward on three assumptions, they determined that a likely site for the mountain was Midian - now a part of Saudi Arabia. Their assumptions were as follows. First, that the Sinai Peninsula was considered part of the "Land of Egypt" and hence could not have been the location of Mt. Sinai, for the Bible clearly states that the Israelites went "out of Egypt;" second, that Mt. Sinai is in the Land of Midian; third, that according to Galatians 4:25, Mt. Sinai is in Saudi Arabia ("Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia"), which assumes that the Arabia of our day is the same as in Paul's day. Many scholars would take issue with each of these assumptions.

With falsified documents Cornuke and Williams entered the Saudi Kingdom and began their search. The Search for the Real Mt. Sinai is a documentary on DVD that details their search. It contains both original footage recorded on their journey and dramatic recreations. What they found, if true, represents the greatest archaelogical discovery since the Dead Sea Scrolls. They claim to have found the well at Marah; the twelve springs of Elim; the caves of Moses and Jethro; the altar for the golden calf; the altar of Moses; the twelve pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel; the blackened rock from when God came upon the mountain in fire; and the split rock of Horeb from which water flowed. They claim to have found nearly irrefutible evidence of the real Mount Sinai.

The explorers believe that this is common knowledge in that part of the world, for they found that the mountain they identified as the probable Mt. Sinai is surrounded by a fence and heavily guarded by Saudi troops. Like something out of a script for Indiana Jones, they crawled past this fence in the dead of night, finding their way with night vision goggles to avoid detection. Finally they scaled the mountain and found these amazing discoveries.

In short, this DVD presents a very convincing case that these men truly did find the real Mount Sinai. But as always, there are two sides of the story. While it is easy to convince ignorant laypeople like myself, experts have raised serious questions about the validities of these claims. And like most biblical issues, nobody can be neutral as every person has something to lose and something to gain.

The DVD is fascinating and informative, though unfortunately there is far more recreated footage than original photos and video. The production is very good throughout - about equal to the level of quality we would expect to see on The Learning Channel or Discovery.

As I wrote earlier in this review, if all that these men have found is accurate, they have made a discovery of incredible importance. Watching the DVD it is difficult to be swayed by their excitement and determination. Their adventure makes for a great story. But when reality sets in, it seems that there are many difficult questions that remain unanswered. If you are able to suspend your reason just a little bit, you'll enjoy this presentation and be swept away in the possibility that you might be seeing the very sites described in the Bible. But when the credits roll, you'll be forced to remember that we walk by faith, not by sight. Whether or not this is the biblical site matters little to our faith. If we allow our faith to be shaped by such discoveries, we will have little depth and will be easily swayed. It is "An evil and adulterous generation [that] seeks for a sign." But we can all enjoy a good story, even if it is just a little bit too good to be true.

3 out of 5 stars Go for the Original Discovery DVD instead of this one !!!.......2005-06-10

If you really want to have an in-depth information of the site, I strongly recommend that you go to www.wyattmuseum.com to get the original and more authentic footage (without any recreations as in this DVD) and see for yourself. The evidence available on "The Exodus" DVD available at www.wyattmuseum.com is much vast and the onsite footage much detailed. The "Search for the Real Mt. Sinai" DVD supplements little information when compared to "The Exodus" DVD. However, as always is the case, the original things generally get subdued by their duplicates.

Not only this, the above site also contains amazing discoveries on Noah's Ark, Exodus, Sodom & Gomorrah and Ark of the Covenant which are also available on DVDs.

3 out of 5 stars interesting, not compelling.......2004-12-13

I just bought this movie, and I must say that it doesn't give compelling evidence for the real Mt. Sinai. I will give it three stars because it is interesting. One of the problems I found with the film is that the characters seamed to contradict themselves, and if you pay attention you will notice that they gave very little footage of they're findings. Sadly, I don't know of any films that deal with archeology that could replace this one, only some excellent books like "evidence that demands a verdict" that I think do give conclusive evidence for the historicity of the BIBLE by Josh McDowell, books from Norman Geisler, F.F. Bruce, etc.

Description

There are few more tantalizing or notorious historical documents than the Vinland map. A faded, yellowing scrap of parchment bearing a faint tracery of lines, the map apparently shows the eastern seaboard of North America-yet it was drawn at least half a century before Columbus reached the New World. It seems to present unshakeable proof that the Vikings were the real discoverers of the Americas. But for 40 years, a bitter debate over its authenticity has raged among cartographers, historians, and scientists. Despite chemical analysis and radiocarbon tests, the case remained unresolved. Now, in an exclusive investigation, NOVA presents fresh evidence confirming that the map was probably one of the cleverest forgeries of all time, and probes who might have wanted to carry out the deception. In this enthralling cartographic detective story, NOVA pursues a trail from Scandinavia to Austria, Switzerland, London, and the U.S.

2 out of 5 stars Plain Old Forensics.......2007-02-09

I usually love forensic studies. When they use science to convict murderers, I'm ready to cheer. Some may feel that this work is great for the same reasons. However, I felt that the producers tried to create a shroud of mystery for a question to which they clearly knew the answer. I didn't like the way this documentary pulled the viewer from A to B to C so blatantly.

This work includes a hilarious comic sketch in which Columbus duels with a Viking. Later, they show a pizza maker throwing dough on a Yalie. Still, there doesn't need to be a fight as far as I'm concerned. Even if the Vikings reached North America first, it's still Colombus who introduced the Americas to Europe on a large scale. It doesn't have to be a zero-sum game. This work implied that no one wanted to upset Italian Americans, but surely that or any ethnic group would want the truth to come to light. The work shows a Yalie with a horned hat that the King of Norway gave him. However, almost every work on the Vikings says they did not wear horned hats.

The Yale museum shown looked like a waffle maker. What a monstrosity! How could the school that claims Maya Lin as an alumna have a building so tacky?!

Amazon.com essential video

Along the way, this fine adaptation of Jane Hamilton's popular novel delivers insights into what it means to be fallibly human--as well as strong supporting performances by Strathairn and Moore especially, plus Arliss Howard and Chloë Sevigny. --Kathleen Murphy
