very different approach to war cinema...congratulations to the director and the cast...they've told the story of back to home after war in a very different way...

5 out of 5 stars Primo's odyssey back to the living . . ........2006-01-15

"God does not exist, if Aushwitz exists," says Primo on the train. Truce shows something else . . . how a man's soul cannot be destroyed. Truce is a travelogue through the chaos of post war Europe. Beginning in Aushwitz, Primo and has band of brothers traverse the wilds of Poland, Russia, and, finally, Munich en route to their home. Their souls are slowly reborn. They find love, compassion and a simple appreciation of nature before landfall in Italy. By chance, by laugh, they complete their journey from death to life. The only negative(a small one) in this movie was the use of voice over narration by Primo. The visuals tell the story; the voice over narration was unwarranted. I would have liked to have seen more of Primo Levi beginning his life in Turin, but this would have been a different odyssey.

2 out of 5 stars Unrealistic.......2005-07-11

Having read most of the reviews in relation to "The Truce" - I think I am going to find myself in a minority of one.
I bought this DVD because I thought that the storyline was interesting and because of the good reviews.
However, having now watched it twice I found that most of the acting and the scenarios defided credibility.
Right from the start when we saw the alledged inmates of Auschwitz virtually running to the open gates - a situation which,to anyone who has seen original footage of the liberation by the Russians, would know that, most of the unfortunate inmates could hardly stand let alone run. This immediately struck an un-realistic chord.Shortly afterwards we are introduced to a large Greek gentleman(with the boots)- a totally unbelievable character, with an OTT performance by the actor concerned, played more as a caricature rather than an actual character - and there were numerous others who were just not convincing. In fact the main character (Primo) was the one performance which was excellent and believable, who did convey the fact that he had just come from Auschwitz, most of the others gave the impression that they had just come from a holiday camp.
Also there were too many musical pieces in the film, which gave me the impression that the director wasn't sure whether to go for serious drama or a semi- musical.(At times I almost expected Topol to come in singing "If I was a rich man" or similar!)The scene with the swords-man dancing to "Cheek to Cheek" was one such case and rather pointless.
The plus-points of the film were the superb photography, the fact that,as some other reviewer mentioned,sub-titles were not used when many of the different nationalities were encountered "en-route",which did convey the difficulties in making one-self understood, plus,as already mentioned, the excellent performance by the main character Primo.
The thing is though, with any film, unless you are regarding it as pure escapism - you need to believe what you are watching, and this was not the case with this film.As already mentioned, there were too many un-believable characters and too many un-likely scenarios which was a great shame as the basic story could have been made into a good film, but it needed to be under-played NOT over-played.
If you are the sort of person who can just accept that whatever you are seeing portrayed is true and life-like, you may enjoy this(plus any John Wayne war films!)- but to me it was totally un-convincing.
I am aware it was based on a true story and,if all the incidents in the film did truly happen,I am convinced that they didn't happen quite as portrayed in the film.
"The Pianist" is so much better,my advise, buy that instead.

5 out of 5 stars THE best film I've seen in years ........2003-03-17

THE best film I've seen in years .
Primo ( John Turturro in his best role )is a survivor of Auschwitz , survivor of Holocaust . He is Italian Jew saved by Russians at the end of WWII . All he wants is so simple - just to go home . But railroads are destroyed and he has to make a detour true Minsk ( Minsk is a capital of Belorussia . Minsk is a hometown of my mother . Minsk is the city where only 4 buildings was still standing after WWII . Minsk is the city which my mother had to leave when she was 2 years old and hide under the horse cart during the air strikes ... she still can't talk about it .)At the same time he need to learn how to live usual life , how to look without scare , without pain . How to live at all .
What makes this film 10 stars out of 5 ... little details , the feeling , the scare in everyone's eyes . I know this feeling . I know this scare . I don't want to remember it , but this film brought it back . And especially now I think everyone have to learn it ... before it is too late .
This film is very slow and very deep . Acting on highest level - I even forgot that this is actors "acting". What shocked me most - the details , just little things which are so important ,
This film have to be watched by everyone and taken deep into our hearts . This kind of story might and have to change our world for better .

5 out of 5 stars the long journey home.......2001-02-05

If posible, I would award ten stars to the film version of Primo Levi's "La Tregua". This is a superb movie about what happened to the prisoners of Auschwitz after their liberation by the Red Army. The role of Primo, an Italian Jew, is played brilliantly by John Turturro. Along with survivors of various nationalities, the band of liberated Italians is taken to a transition camp run by Soviet medical personnel. Here the survivors recover from their ordeal, rebuilding their strength for the long journey home. A chemist by profession, Primo joins the Soviet medical staff until the train finally arrives to transport everyone home. Unfortunately, the railroad track has been everywhere destroyed by war, necessitating a prolonged and circuituous route through Minsk. During the trip, the Holocaust survivors are dependent on the limited supplies of the Red Army and the generosity of impoverished Soviet citizens.

The Italian language is "dubbed" in accented English for this American film, and a variety of foreign languages -- Russian, Polish, Ukranian, German, French -- are spoken without subtitles. This very realistically conveys the confusion and frustration experienced by the survivors. The audience, like Primo, must rely on translators or simply decipher some dialogue from context or pantomime. By utilizing panoramic filming of scenery, changing gradually from dreary winter to spring to early summer, the movie gives a strong sense of the interminable duration of the journey home. Recurrent throughout the film are eerie black-and-white flashbacks to the horror of Auschwitz. Some of these are wrenching. Overall, though, the theme is of hope, and of camaraderie and kindness helping to heal the wounds of the Holocaust. Watching "Truce" is an emotional experience, depicting true events that must never be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Wild Horses.......2005-03-21

The place is New Zealand, the time is the present, and the story is about what happens in a small community when the trees have been cut down and the sawmill closes. Some of the workers, the ones who can shoot, hire on with a venison packing company to hunt and pack the plentiful deer. Others just drift away. The ones with an independent bent strike out on their own. Mitch (Keith Aberdein) is one such free spirit, and he decides to earn a living by capturing and reselling the free roaming wild horses in New Zealand's Tongariro National Park.
Mitch and a couple of his mates prove to be inept, and loud, horse catchers. Essential to the plot but bad for them the ruckus they raise not catching horses spook the deer, making the venison harvest difficult. Plant owner Benson (Michael Haigh), in the best western tradition, hires a black clad professional, Tyson (Bruno Lawrence) to kill the horses so they'll quit interfering with the deer hunt. In the meantime, Mitch enlists the help of two skilled horse capturers - the wise old Sam (Tom Poata) and the pretty young Sara (Robyn Gibbes.)
I liked WILD HORSES a lot. It was nice to see a conflict western in a new and, to me at least, exotic location. The rules are a little different in New Zealand. As one character says, "Horses, deer, rabbits - they've all got to go. None of them are native." In other words, horses can be shot where they stand, with impunity, and left to rot where they fall. In fact, there are some disturbing scenes where it appears horses are actually shot and killed. The movie doesn't condone the killing, and it has dramatic impact, but anyone sensitive to graphic and realistic scenes such as those should be forewarned.
If you can abide the violence WILD HORSES is a deeply rewarding film. I especially liked the way the hired-gun Tyson developed. Early in the movie the veteran wild horse catcher Sam tells Mitch that "We leave a few of the best stallions to breed. That way there'll always be horses." The best of those is an elusive silver stallion. Tyson reaches an agreement with Mitch that the silver stallion will be the last horse shot by his men. The stallion, "something that stands up for itself out there," binds Mitch and Sara and Tyson together and propel them all into a surprising, although inevitable, conclusion.

WILD HORSES is a modest little gem of a movie. The color is a little washed-out and it contains some short scenes of graphic violence. Save for that I strongly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars meadowlark song.......2007-06-21

This hauntingly beautiful film of ranch life so accurately illustrates the frustration of the small Central Valley rancher who has a heartfelt commitment to the land and his way of life. Anyone even remotely interested in ranch life will be richly rewarded by Buck Taylor's performance...you can feel his deep love for the land and his way of life. How many of his struggles did our fathers experience? The gorgeous images of this film will touch many of us. I would recommend it to anyone with a love of the earth.

1 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE.......2007-05-26

the Cowboy hall of fame got one thing right about this movie: it is a cowboy movie. Other than that, I can not understand how it could have garnered the picture of the year award, as it is absolutely terrible on every front: acting, photography quality, sound quality, dialog, plot continuity, everything. We had to discontinue viewing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent film.......2007-04-23

This is a good film to not only watch but to own it is very family friendly and is one of the best I have had the pleasure of watching lately

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful independent film.......2006-11-17

Buck Taylor is convincing in his role as Harry Dodds, an aging rancher fighting to hold on to his land, while at the same time struggling to raise his teenage granddaughter. Fans will remember Buck Taylor from his roles as Newly in Gunsmoke and as Turkey Creek Jack Johnson in Tombstone. Samantha Droke is a natural in the role of the granddaughter, bringing an innocent charm to her part. There is a great supporting cast of real-world cowboys, including Barry Tubb, Brad Johnson, and Tommy Guy, all of whom add a sense of authenticity to the film, bringing scenes to life with humor and grit. Oscar winner George Kennedy has a likeable turn in his role as Dr. Peter Gannon.
Truce is truly an international collaboration, written and directed by American Matthew Marconi, with cinematography by Takuji Murata of Japan, and musical score written and conducted by Robert Gulya of Hungary. This is a wonderful film, beautifully shot on cattle ranches in California. Truce brings to mind the colorful history of ranching in America, along with the quest of the modern rancher to preserve a unique and challenging way of life. Moreover, this film is a testament to hard work and determination, and ultimately, to forgiveness and the ability of individuals to evolve.

5 out of 5 stars what a sad, hopeless and bore-to-death ranch living.......2006-11-15

a total waste of life to own a ranch, feeding some cows, living alone, owing big mortgage, lagging monthly payments, so stubborn to give up. what's the purpose of such life and living? worth it? or you just want to hang on to this hopeless blind belief that you could make it?
like farmers in america, ranchers also struggle so bad that what used to make america strong now becomes a joke. by watching this movie, i also feel so hopeless and helpless like that old rancher on a small piece of land in america. why american government, the congress and the senate didn't do anything for their own people who are struggling so pathetically in their lives? why throw so much money in the so-called foreign aids? why not put money in our own peoples' pockets? if all the congressmen and the senators are elected by their own people in their states, why they just listen and pay attention to those lobbyists? what went wrong with america?

1 out of 5 stars So Awful....So dreadful...I just might buy it........2006-03-01

The most astonishing aspect of this film is the credit list.(All those people ?..how?)Did it really take five carpenters to bang up the shed they used as the interior for the craft?.Five people is unbelievable...and not one could have been a carpenter..even though it was quite obviously a
wooden project (for some ten year old ).The seats on the craft..have to be seen to be believed...wood with a few coats of matt paint..and done really poorly. And no fancy monitors or keyboards..just shelfing and silly flourescent lighted corridors..incredible.
This film was made from materials culled from a old shed..The story line was so not so silly for a sci fi but what excecution.
The main character is inside a body disarming a weapon...gets a phone call from his daughter that she is at the Paris Airport.Speaking from Munich..he asks her to stay in the airport lobby while he then just seems to pop over and meet as if only a moment has elasped...very good. How could so many people have had the gall to have asked to have been paid for having contributed to this.So bad ..you have to watch to believe it.

1 out of 5 stars Worse Than One Star.......2006-01-13

Quite possibly the worst movie I've ever seen. I love sci-fi and have been a fan of Henriksen from Aliens and through projects like Millenium. When I saw this on sale for $5, I picked it up - expecting a bargain. I have to honestly say I would have felt bad getting it for free. Definately a B-movie, but that doesn't necessarily guarantee a bad movie. Horrible plot with a script to match, over the top acting, especially from the two "gunners". Just horrible.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Low Budget Sci Fi version of Fantasitc Voyage.......2005-11-27

Fan Favorite Lance Henrickson of "Aliens" plays a bomb squad specialist who takes a journey of microscopic proportions in this film. I have to say I just picked it up to see him.

It obviously was made on a budget but it does have entertainment value. I would ignore all the other reviews if you don't mind cheesy effects and like action adventure with a positive ending.

This looks like one of those Sci Fi Channel movies of the week. Robin Givens puts in a good performance as a perky scientist the Lance Henrickson character falls for romantically. Now if only Sci Fi could do a low budget version of Star Trek with the former actors they could concetrate on character and not special effects.

The thing I like about these low budget movies is the fact that it has a positive ending as opposed to negative one. In today's world we need a few more happy endings without any negativity.

2 out of 5 stars Antibody Needs Antibodies.......2005-05-11

This is a pretty bad film, starting off like a thriller and then becoming sci-fi. Some of the acting is quite amateurish and you have to wonder why Lance Henriksen and Robin Givens would associate themselves with it. I guess they needed the money. The accents, particularly the German, are quite poor and I doubt that they actually filmed much on location. Where was it filmed though? Americans and Hispanics and others seem to have hard accents, as if they are from Eastern Europe. Israeli television suffers from the same problem with accents when they make TV shows pretending to be Americans.

There are a number of plot problems and the scene where they figure out the sequence to stop the nuclear timer is ridiculous. The complexity of it does not follow.

The scenes where they are reduced to microscopic and in a sub remind me of Fantastic Voyage. Although, just as another reviewer remarked, the original and its effects were better, even though they were pre-CGI. They are injected into the dying terrorist's body to find and defuse a nuclear trigger.

I cannot recall any nudity although there is some action violence.

2 out of 5 stars SEND IN THE WHITEYS!.......2004-03-13

ANTIBODY is definitely a mediocre ripoff of FANTASTIC VOYAGE, and what merits it has rests purely on some minor individual achievements. First, William Zabka, long known villain of all his movies, dons a German accent, and plays a good guy who actually saves the day! Lance Henricksen also plays a good guy, but one who seems desperately in need of Geritol. And poor Robin Givens looks like a snow cone with that hairdo, and looks like she was in need of Ex-Lax.
The effects are pretty dismal, and although it maintained my interest, it's certainly not a film I would recommend you buy, but might rent when you're in the mood for a trip through the body!

This film looked like it was shot on a handheld videocam, and it had the storyline of a television drama. Had about as much acting talent and creativity as one any way.

This made WB dramas look like Laurence Olivier films.

4 out of 5 stars a BRILLIANT commentary saves this from godawful wackness.......2004-01-23

this film is simply woeful.theres no other way to describe it.utterly devoid of acting, basic character development, and utterly no plot.i may slag certain films for poor dialogue or acting, but this doesnt contain ANY!!!!! the thing is,theres a certain enjoyment in watching something so pathetic that they seem ignorant to the fact its rubbish.it jerks and jumps and goes absolutely no where.there is no plot.no plot whatsoever.however, switch on the ice T commentary, and hey!!! its great!!!! this is possibly one of the best commentarys ever!!!! almost everything he says is hilarious!!! he basically admits the film is terrible and he was just having a laugh.he asks why silkk the shocker appeared in it."he's rich i dunno why he agreed to it".yeah,so do we. he goes on at length about how they didnt bother to film in new york, instead filming in a cheepo dump somewhere in eastern europe.theres so many quotes that ice T said that stick in my mind.for example, theres shots of new york when it switches from scene to scene."look at this, this is what new york is...tenements,hills....." wow thanks for that one."if you hear any noises,i had taco bells before i came here"."i dont know what the hell thats supposed to mean"."that B**** keeps looking at the clock,i dunno what message that means though".are brilliant!!!!!!! ice t is hillarious in this!!!!!! the guy has a great sense of humour, and i get the feeling what he does is meant to be taken slightly ironically.so,to summarise it; if you're looking for a film with action and thrills, look elsewhere.however,if you're looking for a rubbish film, and have someone make great comments about it,then look no further!!!!! id DEFINATELY recommend you buy this!!!!!!! i laughed pretty much the whole way through it. 4 outta 5

COME ON, THIS MOVIE DIDN'T EVEN LAST AN HOUR! FILLED WITH ICE-T MUSIC FROM BEGINNING TO END. THIS MOVIE IS SERIOUSLY FLAWED. AS ALWAYS, IT'S FILMED ON A CHEAP BUDGET AND IT'S FILLED WITH BAD ACTING. THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE MOST EMBARRASING MOVIES THAT ICE-T HAS EVER APPEARED IN. DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID. STAY AWAY FROM THIS TRASH AT ALL COSTS.

1 out of 5 stars Awful, but hilarious........2003-08-05

Corrupt *is* terrible from an aesthetic perspective, but Ice-T's hilarious commentary is worth the price of admission alone. If you're an MST3K fan, or just a fan of hilarious terrible films in general, you might enjoy Corrupt.

5 out of 5 stars Violent true to -life WWII movie, sick!.......2005-02-05

After the war has ended on it's last days, soldiers still obey and must decide if they should kill or not. Psychological thriller with a lot of violence. I would definetly pick this up for such a good price becaue it is well worth it.

1 out of 5 stars Fine Movie, Trash DVD!!!.......2002-07-07

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Italian movie industry made a number of World War II films. They ranged from trash to average to occasionally excellent. THE FIFTH DAY OF PEACE represents the best of the genre. Chances are you wouldn't be looking at the DVD if you didn't already know what the film was about.

The DVD quality is appalling. The print is muddy and smeary, mastered from a video tape. You know how when a VCR may start to eat a tape, it leaves those crinkles on the actual tape and you get the telltale "skips" on the TV screen when you watch the damaged part of the tape? Well, those same type skips show up during part of the credits. The colors look worn out as well. The sound is monophonic and a little muffled. There is a brief yet loud and annoying buzz about 40 minutes into the film as well. The sound is not always in synchronization with the picture, either. It's not because of the dubbing, though. I have compared with my video copy. There are plenty of digital artifacts off and on as well. The screen-shots for the 10 chapter scenes and those of Johnson and Nero look excellent, but do not compare well to the picture quality of the actual film.

The DVD is 1.33:1, cropped from the original letterbox print of 2.35:1. Portions of words are missing from both the sides of the screen and the bottom of the screen during parts of the credits.

It looks as though the folks at Simitar might have just recorded this from a TV screen with a video camera. An enterprising way to save money but also a great way to lose business.

For "special" features there are 10 chapter searches, movie factoids which provide no information not found on the case, and abridged biographies and filmographies for Richard Johnson and Franco Nero.

I piad [a small amount] for this and still thought it was a waste. My video from Congress Entertainment, while still lower quality, is better than this DVD.

1 out of 5 stars AVOID !!!.......2001-12-06

If you want to impress your friends with your new DVD player then (...) don't show them this film. It's a straight forward copy from a video tape that will have you reaching for the tracking button (if only) and the sound is not in sync with the picture. The acting is wooden and the plot is dire. If you are fool enough to buy this, don't come crying to me when you realise I'm right!

5 out of 5 stars 5th day of Peace.......2000-05-25

A very grim movie about German deserters at the end of WWII, who are captured by Canadian forces. Their former comrades in arms (led by the senior German POW played by Helmuth Schneider) also held by the Canadians, sentence them to be shot and persuade the weak Canadian Captain (played by Richard Johnson) egged on by his General (Michael Goodliffe) to carry out the sentence. No attempt here to glamorise war. Everything is very bleak, but the film is a superb character study and all the performances are excellent. Best ever performance by Richard Johnson. Only major criticism is of the unconvincing Canadian accents.

The movie was never released in the UK (and maybe not in the USA either). It was released in Germany under the name "Gott Mit Uns" (God with us)

This is Volume Six: In "The Violent Truce Raid," Moffitt takes over the mission of an injured American medical corpsman to warn a British convoy of contaminated plasma supplies. This is the best Italian crime-drama I ever saw. Milano Rovente (Gang War In Milan) is a pillar in the olympus of Italian cult flicks thanks to the spartan directing of Umberto Lenzi and the convincing dark-jazz soundtrack by Carlo rustichelli.Must see.
