Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
Still one of American cinema's most powerful, daring filmmaking debuts, Terrence Malick's Badlands is a quirky, visionary psychological and social enigma masquerading as a simple lovers-on-the-lam flick. Inspired by the 1958 murders in the cold, stark badlands of South Dakota by Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate, the film's plot, on the surface, is similar to that of other killing-couple films, like Bonnie and Clyde and Gun Crazy. Martin Sheen, in an understated, sophisticated performance, plays the strange James Dean-like social outcast who falls in love with the naïve Sissy Spacek--and then kills her father when he comes between them. The two flee like animals to the wilderness, until the police arrive and the killing spree begins.
What sets the film apart from others of its genre is Malick's complicated approach. Gorgeous, impenetrable images contrast sharply with Spacek's nostalgically artless narration, serving as ironic counterpoints, blurring concrete meaning, and stressing that nothing this horrific is simple. Malick observes, rather than analyzes, the couple in a manner as detached and apathetic as the couple's shocking actions. No judgment or definitive motivations are offered, though Malick's empathy often leans toward his senseless protagonists, rather than the star-struck society that makes killers famous. Compared with the interchangeable uniform cops who hunt them and the film's other nameless characters stuck in suburban banality, the couple are presented like tarnished, warped and frustrated results of squelched individuality.
Badlands, on one level, views America's suffocating homogeneity and, conversely, its continued obsession with celebrities (individuals considered different but adored) as hypocritical. Ambiguous and bold, the movie hints that society may be as guilty as the killers. --Dave McCoy

In the most dangerous, drug infested city streets stagger the addicts who are so lost in drugs that it is hard to imagine how they might ever get out. And so many never do. ABC News met some of those people 10 years ago when they visited a North Philadelphia neighborhood, riddled by drugs and crime, known as the Badlands. It was as hopeless a neighborhood, as hopeless a group of people, as you might ever meet. One of the unforgettable men ABC News met in the Badlands was Seville, a nickname Merrill Jackson acquired as a car thief. He was also known as "The Doctor," because he ran a drug house where he sold drugs and helped addicts find veins. Seville was probably the last person you would have expected to clean up his act. But with the help of Reverend Joann Muller, a suburban mother of five, Seville is clean and sober. And he is a powerful expert witness on what life is like deep inside addiction. Part One. Merrill "Seville" Jackson was a drug dealing heroin addict running a shooting gallery in the Badlands of North Philadelphia. Reverend Joann Muller was a suburban mother of five, dedicated to making a difference in the world, somehow. Seville, who earned his nickname from a predilection for stealing Cadillacs, was also known in those days as "the doctor," because he sold drugs and helped long-time addicts like himself find a vein to inject drugs, even when those veins were collapsing. Seville and Rev. Muller explain how Seville kicked his habit after 37 years of drug addiction. Part Two.

Customer Reviews:
Jake E. Lee is a god.......2006-11-27
This concert is the best show ozzy ever released on video. Jake is on fire in this concert. At a time when everybody was trying to be the next Eddie Van Halen, with the whammy bar, finger tapping and over the top soloing, Jake stood out. His style, sound and natural stage presence make this a very entertaining performance.
Randy Castillo looks like he's having so much fun while playing. He makes a great entrance and has a terrific drum solo. Ozzy is his usual self, except for the whole glam thing going on. Phil (the bass player) kind of blends into the background and the keyboards can be too much at times. But this concert is all about Jake. He was the most exciting guitarist to play live with Ozzy. I'm not knocking Randy (he's one of my favorites) but Jake was born to play live. Zakk, though good, lacked creativity which just made him boring.
The high points are Bark at the Moon, Killer of Giants(solo rocks)and Mr. Crowley. The low was knowing that with the exit of Jake, the mythical guitar hero position of playing with Ozzy started losing it's glory.
This was Ozzy at his best. Great performance with extremely talanted musicians.
Ozzy is god.......2006-05-16
The only minuses of this release that 3 songs, Lightning Strikes, Ultimate Sin and Shot In the Dark are all studio versions. The rest is a live concert. This collection consists tracks from the first 4 studio albums. The first track is awesome Shot In the Dark, which got good drums and bass and heavy guitar riffs. Ozzys singing is awesome. Bark At the moon gots its best live version of all time ( better than Zakk Wyldes)The third track, Never Know Why got a weird intro but then it relaxes a bit, and flows to a moody heavy hard rock song. Mr.Crowley got TREMENDOUS live version. Ozzy sings high notes greatly and Jakes guitar stomps HARD N HEAVY. I dont know is ann average song. Killer of Giants is a long, pretty mellow, but hard on few occasions. Thank god for the bomb is a fine heavy metal song. With Ozzy all fired up. Lightning Strikes , I usually skip this. Flying High Again is the only Diary song here, its pretty awesome. Secret Loser is the best song in the setlist. It got great vocals by Ozzy, unbelivable guitar playing by jake and rolling drums by Randy Castillo. I've listened to this live version over 150 times. Then comes Iron Man, My least favourite song in the set. Then comes paranoid, good track, but too long pause. The final track is the memorable Ultimate Sin.
Overall this is Ozzys best live concert, it gots a killer set list but could have had more songs from the albums Bark and Diary. Best tracks are Bark at the moon and Secret Loser. Heavy Metal music doesnt get any better than this. Buy it! BUY IT!
Attention Guitar Students!!.......2006-03-24
I've been looking for this video, and I guess I will keep looking, but I have to concur with Marco and Scott's reviews. I've been playing guitar for over 30 years, and when this video came out in the mid-80s, guitar heroes were in their heyday. At the time, Jake was unquestionably one of the top players for combining great melodicism, virtuoso technique, and incendiary guitar pyrotechniques. (Frankly, few players are at this level twenty years later.) The sequence in this video where Jake barres the neck with the side of his left thumb is amazing, and I have never seen attempted by another player. Especially if you are a student of playing kickin' metal guitar, you must check this out. It will blow your mind.
JAKE E LEE UNDERRATED.......2005-10-14
This is a treat for any GUITAR LOVER or PLAYER,
Watching this guitar god is a gift .
Ozzy is kind of heavy but his singing is OK.
Castillo played as usual, really good
Keyboards are to high for my personal taste,
but if you tweaked you surround a little, you have
the magnificent Jake's guitar roaring in front of you!!
Really good collection of songs,
Highlite KILLER OF GIANTS and BARK AT THE MOON!!
Buy it as supplies last....
this is CLASSIC ROCK
Warning! Cheap homemade Bootleg.......2005-10-13
"The Ultimate Ozzy" has never been rereleased on DVD. This is a cheap, homemade DVDR Bootleg rip of the original VHS. It is worthless.

The odyssey of Marcus Rover, badlands scavenger turned Heavy Gear ace, continues in this clanking, clashing collision of Japanese giant-robo fantasies, American extreme sports bouts, and sci-fi platoon drama. The thin story that surrounds the continuing battles between the scheming Northern villains, "The Vanguard of Justice" (hisssssss!), who sabotage, sneak attack, and ambush the heroic Southern squad, "The Shadow Dragons" (yayyyyy!), hints at a far-reaching conspiracy in this second collection of episodes. But that's secondary to the metal-shearing spectacle of giant robots slamming one another around booby-trapped arenas, underground caves, skyscraper-size towers, and even a speeding train. Though originally shown on TV, the series has been rated PG-13 for "pervasive action violence." The mecha-violence is bloodless but almost nonstop at times and puts characters in life-threatening situations, so parents of younger kids should be wary. If the scripts are a drop from Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles, the computer animation shows a greater sophistication and slickness. Pick your team and cheer. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
Good graphics .. no plot.......2002-10-30
Heavy Gear is a CGI animated show, derived from a videogame of the same name, about the adventures of young mechanic who gets to realize his dream of becoming a robot warrior.
While the graphics and animation are extremely well done, the show is clearly targeted at a fairly young audience (8-13). Older viewers expecting a show with the sophistication of Starship Troopers will be disappointed. Each episode is more or less a 1/2 hour CGI movie that feels like a video game session (put a bunch of robots in an arena and fight it out with a bare semblance of a plot).
A "geartastic" DVD.......2002-09-07
I loved the CG series and this DVD brings out some great episodes. There aren't to many episode but it's thrilling and action packed. A collectors item for any Heavy Gear fan.

My colleagues and I have seen a lot of what drugs can do to a neighborhood and to the people who live there. We have never seen anything quite as bad as the section of north Philadelphia. Almost everything about this part of town is cheap, sleazy, decaying and sad. It is an overripe cliche, down to the name the residents have given their neighborhood: the Badlands. It is the worst of what happens when the drug trade takes over a house, and then a street, and then a block. It's as invasive as crabgrass, as destructive as cancer." - Ted Koppel But how does it get started, and what happens to people in the neighborhood who want to keep the disease from spreading to their block? In this Nightline special, people are sometimes breathtakingly candid about what's happening to them and their families. One of the heroin addicts, a man who goes by the street name of 'Tombstone,' suggested that what's missing these days is a sense of shame."
