Like Chicago, Prison Song is a musical set behind bars, but there's no dancing and minimal singing. Elijah is a talented 10-year-old photographer. His mother (R&B diva Mary J. Blige) works at a fast food joint and dreams of becoming a lawyer. The sky's the limit until Elijah, his mother, and his mother's boyfriend (Harold Perrineau) are all locked up for various offenses. The story picks up several years later as Elijah (now played by A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip) is accepted to college, but ends up in prison after accidentally killing another group home resident (rapper Fat Joe). Prison Song was cowritten and produced by Q-Tip and Darnell Martin (I Like It Like That) and plays like an extended episode of Oz (in which Perrineau played a key role). Blige's "Mom's Song" is the musical highlight, and Elvis Costello appears as Elijah's teacher and lawyer, but does not sing. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The third stop in Chan-wook Park's breathless revenge trilogy, Lady Vengeance comes down slightly--just slightly--from the astonishing highs of middle segment Oldboy. Elegant and ultraviolent in equal measures, Lady Vengeance requires rapt attention from the opening moments, as Park unloads his set-up in a jumble of characters and flashbacks. At the center is a doll-faced ex-con named Geum-ja (Yeong-ae Lee), who just spent 13 years in the slammer for killing a little boy. There's much more to her case than the public knows, and Geum-ja has been carefully, quietly preparing for revenge against the man who put her in this situation. We watch those gears turning throughout the movie, but as Lady Vengeance nears its completion it broadens into an even bigger event than Geum-ja expected. Funny and horrifying, Lady Vengeance is as measured as Geum-ja's own preparations, and has a gorgeous sort of logic about it. As impressive as those machinations are to watch, the movie doesn't make as forceful an argument as Oldboy on just how revenge might be as punishing to the revenge-taker as for his target. Lee is a cool heroine, and Min-sik Choi, who did such heroically exhausting service in Oldboy, is here employed as the monster. (The film's title in the U.S., Lady Vengeance, is different from international title Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, a closer tie to the first part of the trilogy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.) --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars Not "Oldboy" class, but still a good film.......2007-06-11

Despite some fancifull effects and some really terrific and artistic director's shots in some points, this film is probably the weakest link in Park's magnificent trilogy on revenge. It keeps though the viewer's interest throughout, albeit it is not so unpredictable as the two previous films in the series. On the plus side, I may add that revenge is more than justified this time, since the evil doer is a serial killer of small children and the revenge itself is delivered finally in a more "democratic" way.

Lady Vengeance (Chan-wook Park, 2005)

In 2000, Chan-wook Park, a relatively obscure director, and Yeon-ae Lee, a young actress, teamed up for JSA: Joint Security Area, the movie that shot both of them to stardom in their native Korea. Park was to explode onto the international scene with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and the multiple-award-winning Oldboy; Lee continued being popular in Korea, but not so much outside it. All that changed when Park brought her back in to be the lead in Lady Vengeance, the final installment of his revenge trilogy. Poof--instant international stardom!

As with the other revenge films, Lady Vengeance has as its main character a person who has been wrongly imprisoned. In this case, it's Geum-Ja (Lee), who went to prison for kidnap and murder for thirteen years. Now she's out, and she wants revenge. In order to get it, she enlists the help of a number of previously-released prison inmates who'd grown fond of her while they were incarcerated together, and the bunch put together an elaborate plan for the real killer's demise.

It's a fun movie, as long as you're not turned off by a pervasive suggestion of violence (not a great deal of which is actually shown, in contrast to Oldboy). It's very straightforward, which lends the movie a somewhat deliberate pace; there aren't any red herrings being tossed around. We just have Geum-Ja's single-minded devotion to revenge, her plan, and its execution, on the plot side of things. This gives Park time to develop a number of the characters in interesting ways, especially Geum-Ja; interwoven with the flashback scenes of prison life are a number of earlier scenes that give us a sense of who she is as a person, and the extent to which prison changed her. Or did it? Were all her selfless acts in prison, where she was known as an angel, geared towards making allies to help her with her plan (which, at one point, she said began the day she went to prison)? We're never explicitly told, but in the end, it's a secondary consideration; the revenge is what matters. Lady Vengeance is simple and powerful, and worth your time. *** ½

5 out of 5 stars A tale of revenge and redemption for Lee Gum-Jaa.......2007-05-30

Lady Vengeance is the third and final installment in Park Chan-Wook's revenge trilogy that began with Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy, and to me, the best in the series. And all thanks to Lee Young-Ae as Lee Gum-Jaa, exuding a calm, sad, but elegant beauty. Love that red eyeshadow, long black coat and boots! The vengeance is justified, plotted more strategically, created like a cake per the wondrous artistic opening sequence, and the emotional poignancy more than that of Park's first two films. And the mostly melancholy music, highlighted by the theme "Mareta Mareta" adds to the film's ambience. But this movie makes more of a case for justified revenge and killing than the other two films.

In the story, told with recurring flashbacks, Lee Gum-Jaa has finished serving a thirteen and a half year sentence for murdering a 5-year old boy. Turns out though that she was forced to take the rap or else her own daughter would be murdered. During her incarceration, she spends her time hatching up a scheme against the actual killer, Mr. Baek, the elementary school English teacher who took her in when she was pregnant, and blackmailed her by threatening to kill her daughter if she didn't take the rap.

For her grand scheme, she does favours for or uses certain people. She gives a kidney to an inmate suffering from chronic kidney disease. She also slowly poisons the Witch, a horrible, obese predatory inmate who has a penchant for chubby females and is a terror among the other inmates. Creating a wonderful cake out of some pathetic ingredients wows the baker Mr. Chang, who gives her a job at a bakery after her release. And becoming Christian is just a way to reduce her sentence to show how reformed she is. Indeed, her cold response to the warm welcome given her by the preacher who "converted" her at the train station is, "Why don't you go sc--w yourself?"

She finds her cute daughter Jenny living in Australia with foster parents. Jenny can't speak a word of Korean, but nevertheless wants to go to Korea--check out the brief scene where she forces Lee Gum-Jaa to take her there. Jenny though is a bit disgruntled, wondering why she was dumped.

The turning point in the film is when Gum-Jaa is about to kill Baek and discovers he has killed other children. It's not now a point of personal vengeance but giving the parents of the murdered children their bit of vengeance to this serial murderer.

There are highly emotional bits, where Lee Gum-Jaa explains her past to Jenny, with Mr. Baek translating at gunpoint. More disturbing is the scene where the parents of the murdered children react after seeing videos of Baek killing their offspring.

It's not only the search for revenge that's key but also redemption. Although Lee Gum-jaa's life stemmed from a great mistake she made in her youth, she perceives this pessimistic indelible brand of a sinner. My sins are too great and deep She says of Baek, "he made a sinner out of me," and when Jenny asks if she wasn't happy to meet her, Lee tearfully says "Too happy for a sinner like me." She tells an inmate in her "Christian phase" that "Prayer is like a scrubbing towel. It scrubs off all your sins, then your skin will become as new as a baby's a**." Seems she didn't take her own advice, because she is too hard on herself.

Lady Vengeance is the most stylish of the three revenge films, although maybe with some over-elaborate and indulgent bits. The pistol made for her only shoots at very short distances, but the double barrels and ornate carvings are clearly for aesthetic purposes, but in one scene, she has enough wits to run and shoot the hand off the knife-wielding thug who's abducted Jenny. Why not use an automatic?

Symmetry: at the beginning, the Christian preacher waiting for her encourages to eat the block of white tofu so she won't sin again. At the end, she holds a cake with white frosting and tells her daughter to live white. Falling snow symbolizes purity, a new start, and makes for one poignant ending to a film I've watched over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Completing a Trilogy..........2007-05-04

Park Chanwook proved genius with Oldboy. His master-film-work and slow, suspenseful storytelling methods drove the viewers of that film to the brink, all the way up to the terrible twist of an ending. Before that, we had Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, as gritty a revenge flick as there is outside of Deathwish. And now, we have Lady Vengeance....

Before I parade off on the glorifications of this film, I will simply say that this isn't what one would expect from a revenge film. There are no killing sprees, no thug-like menaces that suddenly pop up to show us what our hero is capable of. Lady Vengeance just has one angry woman who wants to get her revenge on the man who ruined her life. Sure, she does have to do a bit of searching and a bit of protecting herself--those are needed plot elements in any revenge film--but more or less the movie was something akin to the mystical journey plot archetype. It even has a theme!!!

That's not to say you can't associate Lady Vengeance with the other two films in the Revenge Trilogy. Lady Vengeance has just as many memorable moments as the first two. Without spoiling much, I will say that the ending was possibly the best in all of the revenge films. It's a little more subtle, and leaves room for a lot of reflection on the viewer's part (it even has a theme!!!). Besides that, there are a couple moments between the beginning and the middle that will leave you chuckling at the screen. That's another thing that separates Lady Vengeance from the other two; it doesn't take itself as seriously. It doesn't mind throwing in some comedy, even if it offsets the suspense of the revenge-flick-archetype.

Now, I won't go much into the story. Revealing too much can ruin the experience. Simply read the synopsis on the case and that's all you should need. This movie does a lot of speaking for itself. It needs to be seen to be believed, and preferably after you've already seen Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy. By itself, Lady Vengeance is great, but as an epilogue to the Vengeance Trilogy, it proves that a) Park Chanwook is a director that should be followed, and b) these films truly are masterpieces of their genre.

5 out of 5 stars I liked it.............2007-04-02

A woman imprisoned for 13 years for a crime she didn't commit is now released and looking for vengence....Simple enough plot. She tracks the man down through her network of friends she met in prison and eventually all her work pays off. Toward the end she takes him to an abandoned school along with the parents of the children he murdered. Every parent gets a turn at the man who murdered their children the only catch is they cannot kill him until each one has had their stab at him. They carefully lay out plastic and bring protective wear so they don't get blood everywhere...which was rather humorous. Very well done movie with great music.

Fennessy

4 out of 5 stars Now that is what I am talking about.......2006-12-14

I thought this movie was a major attempt to illuminate the struggle in inner city life. It would have been one of success and triumph except for a system that tends funnel many people into the criminal justice enviornment. Most importantly it showed how the profit motives of the criminal justice systems rewards what can only be called current day slave holders all under the glaring eyes of serving justice. It should be watched not on BET with commercials destroying the pace and fabric of the film maker but in a theatre or if not possible at home. Beautiful performance by Mary J and the rest of the case. KUDOS

3 out of 5 stars Prison Song Success.......2005-07-28

I thought this movie was pretty good. I watched it for the first time two days ago. Loved the scene with Qtip putting his hands up as if they were a camera and taking pictures, "Click, click". The overall movie was great and I loved the music which leads me to this subject: I can not find this soundtrack anywhere. If there is someone out there that has any input please help as I am desperate to get this music. bigcinc2003@yahoo.com

I loved this movie when I saw it on BET. I love Mary J Blige and loved the music. I had to have it. It was worth the purchase because I have watched it a million times! The message is a great one and it always makes me cry at the end! You won't be sorry!

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie - awesome music.......2004-04-25

Prison Song was a great movie with a good cast and awesome music to go along with the emotions of the characters. I've been trying to find the soundtract to the movie but have had no luck. This is a type of movie you can watch over and over agian and still feel all the emotions of the characters. It goes deep into the system and shows the violence within it. The fight to stay inocennt is taking away with one second of wrong doing.

The series that inspired "KILL BILL" the last Female Prisoner Scorpion picture starring Meiko Kaji (Lady Snowblood). The film opens with Nami Matsushima (a.k.a. Matsu, a.k.a. Scorpion) once again on the lam. The police track her down at a wedding, but she manages to escape. Badly injured, she is saved by a man who works in a strip joint and holds a grudge against the police for torturing him. Can the Scorpion trust a man again? Should she?

4 out of 5 stars Finding love again only to have it destroyed........2007-07-05

Female Prisoner Scorpion: #701: Grudge Song not only marks Kaji Meiko's last performance as Matsushima Nami, aka Sasori--the Scorpion--but it also marks a change of directors with Hasabe Yasuharu taking the director's chair from Ito Shunya. Kaji was unhappy with this switch of directors and the resulting film, so this film marks the end, if one does not count non-Kaji related Female Prisoner Scorpion films, of one of the great heroines of 1970s Japanese cinema.

Like the previous film, Female Prisoner Scorpion: #701: Beast Stable, this film begins with police in hot pursuit of Sasori. Fleeing from a wedding, not her own, a bleeding Sasori encounters a man named Kudo Teruo, a man whose body, and manhood, is horribly scared by his encounters with the police during the latter years of the 1960s when he was a student activist. Daily Kudo checks on Sasori bringing her food and other such necessities and slowly against her instinct she slowly falls in love with him. Sasori, who is nearly completely silent in all of the Female Prisoner Scorpion films, goes under a transformation and one can tell that her features have softened. Being that Kaji rarely speaks in these films, her face speaks volumes and seeing the affection and naïveté on her face fills the viewer with compassion for her especially when one has the knowledge that she will soon again be betrayed.

Although Kaji Meiko herself was not satisfied with the outcome of Female Prisoner Scorpion: #701: Grudge Song, I think that it is a bit stronger that the previous film in the series. While the police never had a shining image in the series, the negativity towards it that many filmmakers held towards it really comes to the fore in this film. This is readily shown in how the police deal with Kudo in both flashback and within the time of the film. Kudo was forced not only to betray his fellows years ago, but also Sasori. Both Kudo's fellows and Sasori could represent a change of conservative society, but such efforts are destroyed by the police, i.e. the state. This might be reading too much into this film, but such tactics as fear and violence used, even against their own, by the police reek of a strong control mentality.

4 out of 5 stars sasori saikou!.......2006-11-10

To me, the most attractive part about this episode is the starring of of my all-time favorite actor, Tamura Masakazu. Trust me, his old movies and dramas are hard to find! (And he didn't have the dandy style yet!) He's still very young, probably in his late 20s or early 30s. He once said that he doesn't want to appear with guns on screen. But here, you see him shooting throughout the movie. Moreover, he's a young activist in the 1960s social moements. If you're a Tamura fan, you would definitely drool watching him tortured by the police! Sasori is cool as usual, and it's the first time I see her falling for a guy! If you're looking for gruesome and campy stuff, this one may disappoint you, cos it's definitely not as good as the earlier ones done by a different director. But it's a Sasori movie -- if you've watched the rest, there is no reason to miss this one.

4 out of 5 stars Female Prisoner Scorpion: #701's Grudge Song.......2006-05-06

I have been looking forward to the release of this DVD (and it's predecessor {Female Prisoner Scorpion: Beast Stable}) for some time as I very much enjoyed the first two movies of this series.

The first three movies were directed by Shunya Ito. What is great about them is that, even though they all feature the same lead character (wonderfully played by Meiko Kaji), they are each vastly different from the others.

The first movie (Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion) is more or less a typical Women In Prison movie. But the character of Scorpion is very intriguing - very reminiscent of the anti-heroes of many spaghetti westerns. And the director often used some very interesting and unusual visual approaches to the material.

The second movie (Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41) is a real tour-de-force. Not so much a WIP movie as the bulk of the film has Scorpion and six other escaped inmates on the lam.

The third movie (Female Prisoner Scorpion: Beast Stable)plays out as much more of a crime drama. Once again, our heroine is on the run. But this time out, she has managed to maintain a certain amount of normalcy in her life (relatively speaking anyway). She gets a job, she finds a place to live, she makes a friend on the outside. But, of course, everything has to unravel eventually. FPS: Beast Stable is my favorite movie in this series.

This film (FPS: #701's Grudge Song) was directed by Yasuhara Hasebe. While the previous three movies were directed in a deliriously surreal manner, this one is often much more of a paint-by-numbers action/crime thriller. I still found it enjoyable to watch throughout. I didn't care as much for the middle portion but the first and final thirds of the film had a lot of really fine moments! The last act was especially entertaining!

While this movie probably wouldn't appeal to most, I definitely think it is worth watching for fans of the previous movies. For me, a large part of the joy in this series is watching the character of Scorpion become more and more mythic. This film absolutely does not disappoint on that count!

Description

Directed by internationally acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yuan (East Palace, West Palace), SEVENTEEN YEARS is a moving study of jealousy, violence and the immutability of family ties. Two teenage stepsisters living in the same house couldn't be more different. One is academic, pretty and quite cosmopolitan. The other is tough minded and proud of her working class roots. As their parents play favorites, an unhealthy competition between them emerges that climaxes in a moment of shocking rage as one of the sisters accidentally kills the other over a bit of lost grocery money. The young girl is convicted of murder and sentenced to a long stay in prison. After 17 years she is granted a special furlough for the New Years. When her parents fail to pick her up, she's left stranded: a prison guard, Chen Jie (Li Bingbing) takes pity on the now mature woman and becomes determined to have her spend the holiday with her family. What follows is one of the most moving and bittersweet family reunions ever depicted on film.

There are many good chinese films. This is NOT one of them! The movie moves too fast for any characters to develop and for the viewer to gain any feeling for any of the characters.

5 out of 5 stars engrossing and moving.......2007-01-08

An innocent teengage act turned into unexpected tragedy for Tao Yuan and she was imprisoned. Seventeen years later she was granted an unexpected furlough on the Chinese New Year eve to visit her parents. The world outside prison had changed so much in the passage of time, and so had her parents. What would it be like for her to go home?

The story-telling was direct and movie production was straight forward, there were neither widely known actors/actresses nor millions of dollar budget thrown into it, yet the result provides 85 minutes of unforgettable movie viewing experience. The movie is engrossing and wonderfully charged with moving emotions.

5 out of 5 stars Simply, Excellent!.......2006-02-14

This is an excellent film. I loved the ending. Somehow, I love prison films. The protagonist being a heroine made the film more versatile and more emotional. Arguably, the film breaks-off from the moment Tao Lan hits her sister with the stick, thereby confirming a murder and hence sentencing her self to imprisonment for 17 years. The expression of guilt and anxiety that Tao Lan experiences affects till the end of the movie. The scene where Tao Lan returns home to see her family for the new years day (with the help of the officer) was absolutely stunning. The feeling of regret, depression, forgiveness and this sense of "Can't I still be a human? Cant I still live?" is profoundly what attracted me. Further, the tension and the contradiction, and above all, the indicisiveness between forgiveness and hate is played out by her father. The visual effects were also brilliant in that it assisted the film to give this very effect (the father getting old, moving slowly, incapable of speaking, etc). Perfect choice of a family disaster made into film. Highly recommendeed.

To me it seems most asian movies are rather..plain and lacking in excitement (this is probably why I haven't found many that I like). However, this movie was a different story. It got the giggles and laughs out of me at times (mind you, I watched it in Koren with subtitles because the English is probably no where near as good), but who wouldn't like guys yelling while beating each other up because they made one of the biggest mistakes of their life? Maybe it's just me, but I think this film stands out from most asian films I have seen and this one is actually funny. I'd recommend this to anyone that likes foreign and/or comedy type movies. Though, everyone has their tastes and I'm sure this film isn't for everyone.
