5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable.......2007-03-14

I like all IMAX movies. I have quite a collection. This is going to be another one of my favorites. I listen to relaxation music and the nice thing about this video you can mute the sound and put on some music and it makes a very relaxing environment. I highly recommend this video if you are a fan of IMAX movies or not.

5 out of 5 stars A Superior Documentary!.......2006-12-25

I gave "Ocean Oasis" 5 versus the 4-Stars of the previous reviewer as it's about the fabulous lower Baha Peninsula's sea life (3/4 viewing time) and coastal land life (1/4 viewing time) migratory birds, sea lions, and the surrounding desert mountains with the emphasis on NATURE where the previous reviewer dinged the DVD by 1-Star because it didn't contrast the area's cities with the Baha desert regions; the DVD's about the lower Baha's sea and coastal bird/animal life and is beautifully filmed and narrated. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as long as you're not looking for a 'Tourist Guide' to the region!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful photography - topside and underwater of Baja!.......2006-02-09

Great videography of topside - birds, landscape, elephant seals..... great videography of underwater - mantas, sharks, big and little fishes. But not a 5 star production like "Coral Reef Adventure" or other IMAX undersea videos! This video shows the beauty, but not a thing about the cities on Baja, how to get there, etc so it leaves me a bit flat. We have planned a trip to LaPaz or Cabo and this video leaves us fealing there are no humans on the whole Baja peninsula! I realize this is supposed to be showing the beauty of the area, but it would have been better if 5 minutes could have been devoted to showing the contrast of the cities vs. the stark desert. Too bad..... this could have easily been a 5 star. It is still worth getting for the incredible photography, but not worth watching over and over like some of the other IMAX shows.

Recorded at their 2000 dates from Wembley Stadium, England, Familiar to Millions celebrates not just nearly a decade of dominance by Oasis but also the fact that it is still actually possible to get them on the same stage at the same time. Moreover, while the band certainly had their troubles getting there (not the least of which was Noel Gallagher's decision to stay at home for many European dates), this finds all concerned with blistering form, with even the newer band members sounding like they were born to play with the monobrowed ones. The chosen set list also wisely skimps on selections from their recent work, preferring instead to concentrate on the likes of "Cigarettes & Alcohol," "Wonderwall," "Supersonic," "Shakermaker," "Don't Look Back in Anger," "Champagne Supernova," and a superb Noel-sung version of Neil Young's "Hey Hey My My."

The actual concert footage itself, though, is only the tip of the iceberg, with special features including a discography, graphics that were specially filmed for the dates, multicamera angles on "Cigarettes & Alcohol," and a documentary by Grant Gee, previously responsible for Radiohead's Meeting People Is Easy documentary. The most entertaining aspect of this DVD by far, however, is a Gary Crowley-conducted, pre-gig interview with the siblings in which ex- cokehead Noel gleefully admits that he can remember absolutely nothing whatsoever about recording (What's the Story) Morning Glory? --Warren Wayans

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars OASIS!!!!!!.......2007-05-12

Got this after I saw them in AC at the house of blues in oct 05. This DVD is awesome!!! I had given Oasis a rest for about a year or two and missed this when it came out. But i listened to this and i got right back on the train, chug a lug! Wooo wooo! OASIS FOOOOKIN BRILLIANT MATE! Gas Panic!, Go Let it Out, classic bangers, talking smack on wembley, whos andy bell...

3 out of 5 stars Boring, and horrendous audio.......2007-04-29

The song choices were poor - "There and Then" was SIGNIFICANTLY better. And the audio on this DVD was very bad and muddy, probably because it is offered as "5.0," whatever that is supposed to mean.

4 out of 5 stars Great to have, even if you already own the CD.......2007-03-29

Now, maybe I'm a bit biased since Oasis is my favorite band ever, but I really am glad I bought this DVD. The image quality is quite good, and it's fun to have the bits of in-between-song banter that are cut from the CD. As far as the bonus features go, they're a bit minimal-- and to be honest, the crowd shots are a little silly at times -- but the interview portion is a good bonus, especially with Noel talking about his thoughts on the albums they'd released at that point. I don't think you have to be a super-fan to enjoy this.

4 out of 5 stars Some captions for the lads!.......2006-11-02

A really nice gig and a nice DVD presentation. It was a good show and the crowd was just awesome. The documentaries included are nice, really do a good job of making you feel like you actually attended the show. The last part of the show is Oasis at their best, compared to any other DVD or live show out there. At the beggining it drags a little: 'Who Feels love' and "gas Panic" are not great songs to play live and can get a little boring. Other than that , I wish the interview included captions, I cant understand a word they are saying!

4 out of 5 stars Familiar to everyone.......2006-10-24

I agree this is not as good as There and Then. But only because of the songs. This tour was in support of the 'standing on the shoulder of giants' album which is my least favourite in the entire Oasis catalogue. But as far as sound and visuals go, I reckon this is a lot better. You actually feel like you are a part of the event that took place on the night of the 21st of july 2000. Hard to believe it was that long ago. I have seen Oasis live a few times and they are excellent live, so if you have never seen them in concert and would like too I highly recommend this as a substitute for now.
The special features are outstanding and the accompanying interviews Liam and Noel actually make sense for a change, instead of their incoherent rambling from the past.
The versions of 'stand by me' and 'don't look back in anger' are my standout tracks here. I look forward to the next live DVD release from Oasis.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Human Drama: Excellent Acting!.......2007-01-17

"Oasis," is a very poignant film from director Lee Chang-dong. The film gives powerful acting performances by the female lead Gong-ju (Moon So-ri) and her counterpart, the male Jong-du (Sol Kyung-gu) which are both masterful. As the films narrative begins, Jong-du (Sol Kyung-gu) has been released from prison. Jong-du is a sociopath who is unable to hold a job and has been in prison three times: for attempted rape, drunkeness which caused an accident, and armed robbery. He decides to visit the family of the man who was killed by his brother. He took the rap for his brother in the accident which sent him to jail. However, the family is moving out when he arrives, leaving a seriously disabled woman [the husbands disabled sister] behind.

The woman is named Gong-ju (Moon So-ri). Moreover, Jong-du finds himself attracted to this woman, who can barely control her body: She has cerebral palsy. When he returns at a later date, however, a very disturbing event occurs [No spoilers: I will leave this for you to view]. However, even though this event by Jong-du is disturbing, Gong-du invites him back again. It is here that these two outcasts of society begin to develop a friendship. Yet, this relationship causes a problem with both of the families, as they do not want any scandal. The families and society have come to see their relationship as twisted and abnormal.

The film shows the happiness of these two unwanted members of society, yet it also shows [not tells] the unease of the two families who are now caught up in the lives of these two individuals. On one side is a man who is emotionally unstable, and the other, a woman who must deal with the harsh realities of cerebral palsy: where her life is one of isolation. Director Lee Chang-dong gives a very insightful film about two people who are socially shunned by the society they live in. And yet, the director allows the viewer to see that they are both content to be with each other, and to hell with society and its mores. These two people both appreciate being alive, and have found each other. This is a drama, and as such, may not appeal to those who are into action films. However, I liked it. [Stars: 4.5]

4 out of 5 stars Worth Seeing.......2005-09-18

This film poses the question of whether it is possible to experience love when you can barely express yourself verbally or physically. How many of us have ever really considered that question? Definitely orth seeing for the acting performances. Moon Sori was amazing, especially in the scenes where she momentarily lost her disability. A warning though - this film is painful and frustrating to watch, and the ending is lousy.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Different and Poignant Love Story... .......2005-07-10

Even in Romeo and Juliet love is being brought to the audience through an agonizing tragedy where the two families disagree with their love. Director Chang-Dong Lee utilizes a similar tragedy in his Oasis where he enlightens the viewers of a much more contemporary issue where the two protagonists find themselves rejected by their own families. However, it is within the tragedy that humanity is given an opportunity to grow and show that love does reach beyond vanity and self-importance.

The opening shot displays an embroidered depiction of something resembling an oasis emerging from underneath the shadows of the night, as a tree outside throws its nightmarish shadow over the the embroidery. The camera finally reveals a small oasis in the middle of a desert with a Indian woman, a boy, and an elephant. This initial sequence continues for almost two minutes. A time that might seem like an eternity for introducing the title of the film. However, these two minutes will also bring to mind a different notion, which will disclose itself at a later point in the film. In addition, the film will return to this embroidery, as it represents the main motif of the film both literally and symbolically.

The film begins with Hong Jong-Du (Kyung-gu Sol) returning home on a bus with summer clothing in the middle of a freezing winter. Initially, Jong-Du's light clothing might imply that there is something wrong with him, and yes, there is something wrong with him. However, it is not his summer wear, but his social interaction with people that seems strange on a communicational level. He wanders home to find out that his family have moved without informing him about their whereabouts. Alone, Jong-Du drifts until hunger sets in and he gets in trouble with the law, which obviously is not the first time when it is revealed that he has just been released from prison. Fortunately, one of Jong-Du's brothers bails him out and brings him home, but it is not a dear homecoming for Jong-Du.

Every second of the film displays additional problems that Jong-Du has, and it is evident that Jong-Du suffers from some cognitive disorder. In an awkward and unwelcome visit of Jong-Du with the family whose father he accidentally killed in a car accident he meets Han Gong-Ju (Moon So-ri), the daughter of the deceased father. Gong-Ju suffers from cerebral palsy and is more or less stranded in her fathers old apartment, as her brother has found it convenient to leave her in the hands of her neighbor.

During the second visit to Gong-Ju, Jong-du breaks into her apartment out of curiosity. He talks with her and expresses his affection for her while leaving her his brother's business card with a phone number where she can reach him. Consequently, Jong-Du begins to express his desires for her by sexually assaulting her. It is with much difficulty one has to watch this dreadful scene, but it also further displays Jong-Du's inability to function on a normal level. She passes out while Jong-Du panics and runs away after having gotten her back to consciousness. From out of the blue Jong-Du receives a phone call. It is Gong-Ju who calls him and she wants to meet. This brings them through an unusual, yet tender love affair with respect, care, and affection where the embroidery on the wall comes into play.

The performances by Kyung-gu Sol and Moon So-ri are astounding, as they help elevate the film to the heartrending experience that it provides. This is the second time these two actors have worked together, as they both were in the terrific Peppermint Candy (2000). Here in Oasis they seem very comfortable with one another and this is essential for them to be able to pull off such terrific performances. Both give very different visualizations of their characters and they do so convincingly well.

Chang-Dong Lee depicts a loving tale through some amazing scenes where he breaks the boundaries between what is real and fantasy. It is in these fantasy scenes where the audience will find themselves bewildered to what is truly happening, but it must be magical happiness that is being expressed. The camera also reveals some stunning realism where the interaction between Gong-Ju and Jong-Du displays both their difficulties and how they cope with their difficulties in society. Through the combination of fantasy and realism Chang-Dong Lee expresses a genuine concern about the issue at hand, which suggests that all people have the right to love and feel loved.

5 out of 5 stars An introspective view of the physically and mentally disabled.......2005-07-08

The night air was crisp. A seemingly slightly retarded Korean man (well, mentally slow at least) offered to do a magic trick for his female companion who suffered from a lifetime affliction of cerebral palsy. Instead, she stuttered with her arms arhythmically jerking out of sequence to her words and her lazy eye wandering to the window, "Don't.... go.. I want.... you..... to sleep with me. Don't you know..... what it means..... when a woman..... asks a man..... to sleep...... with her?"

Then after removing clothes the two began to make love.

"Is this.. where you..? No, that's not it.."

She made random noises as her eyes again turned different directions, her arms were flailing.

"If anyone needs to use the bathroom after the sex scene it's upstairs, first door to the right." Jill announced.

I looked away from the projection and laughed.

The most interesting aspect of the movie was that the disabled female character suddenly normalized at points and in fantasy sequences the inner happiness of the two lovers was made apparent by removing the superficialities of their disabilities. It was excellent acting on her part and a brilliant way to project what the writer must have intended.

An inherent flaw of oriental (and perhaps most) societies in which strict societal conformity is demanded is also made very apparent.

The sad ending was perhaps unnecessary but was probably placed there to stress the overall sadness of their lives.

I enjoyed the movie, it inspired a lot of thought within me and I believe it to be a paramount film.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Human Story, Surprising Romance.......2005-05-09

The acting especially by the leads (Moon So-ri and Sol Kyung-gu) was fantastic; Moon's performance convinced me she was truly disabled. Also, the pace felt faster than it actually was. Beautiful cinematography, like so many Korean films.

I saw this in Seoul when it opened, with two native Korean friends who also loved it.

While I remain a little ambivalent about how so many acclaimed Korean dramas portray rape, this film was able to make the protagonists' disabilities secondary to the plot and not the focus. Sometimes difficult to watch, this movie wouldn't have been made in Hollywood, and it's definitely worth watching.

1 out of 5 stars Man does this suck.......2007-04-10

This was just painful. This scatters back and forth between clips of music, clips of interviews with the artists, clips of festival performers, and clips of the audience who are out to prove that they're there for everything but the music, and yet will tell you over and over again that they're there only for the music. You don't get enough of the music or performances to care about them. You don't get enough of the interviews with the artists to know if you care about anything that they're saying. And you get way too much of the audience, so you do know beyond any shadow of doubt that you don't care about them.

The highlight of the film, if there is one, is a back and forth montage between a member of Oasis and some idealistic performer I can't recall the name of. Our cynical little Gallagher brother drones on and on that the idea that music can change the world is dead, that it can't be done anymore, it's simply a dead idea of a bygone era. It's actually the greatest thing any member of Oasis has ever said in any forum, and probably the only true thing they've ever said. Anyway, the clip goes back and forth between his cynical view of music and the bright eyed ambition of an artist that still believes he can change the world, even if one person at a time. I have to think when he watches the movie, the humiliation is unreal. Of course, I have to think anyone that sees themselves on this film would be humiliated beyond words.

1 out of 5 stars Perry Farrell, why have you forsaken us?.......2006-07-12

... Heck, I'd settle for John Popper and the return of HORDEfest.

Sweet Jesus, there are not enough words in the English language to describe how painful this DVD is. Apparently produced by hyperactive 22 year olds drinking caseloads of Red Bull, this DVD pretty much encapsulates what is wrong with the empty TV of MTV. Pandering to the ADD crowd, the camera never lingers for more than 2.4 seconds on any one scene. What the hell, were they paying their camera guys by the minute? Performances are interspersed with spoken interviews and the camera occassionally focuses on a concertgoer who is singing along with the band onstage ('cause, man, you know... everyone was having so much fun!).

If you've ever been to a concert and felt embarrassed for having something in common with your fellow concertgoers, then you should definitely not watch this DVD. Callous youth have never seemed so vapid. It would be excusable if these kids were stoned or drunk or under SOME chemical influence while making so many stupid comments but I'm sorry to say that they appeared quite straightedge.

As other reviewers have noted, this is the crux of the issue. The DVD attempts to give the crowd their fifteen minutes of fame rather than focus on the music performances. (People, it's about you! You're all stars! You have the power to make a difference and you're young and beautiful and edgy and fun! Now go buy a $40 t-shirt and a $10 bottle of Smart Water!)

Note to the girl dancing onstage during the Belle and Sebastian performance: you should really sue the producers for raping you of your dignity.

3 out of 5 stars In the days of the box set,.......2006-06-10

Yeah it's got the mood there fella but really lacks the fullness I was looking for. A great video would have at least had 3 songs per performance. Morrissey's song was cut and that was dissapointing. I got the film to see that and it was like 2 min 25 seconds long. OK.

This video is really just a preview of what could have been and isn't. Rent. Don't buy.

5 out of 5 stars NOT a concert movie...and better for it!.......2006-05-21

While other reviewers have zeroed in on this movie's lack of complete performances or its penchant for "split screens" and "cliched" techiniques, I find "Coachella" a truly interesting capsule of the various moods and bands that hit the stages and fields of this SoCal staple. The film features stunning photography, and tries to portray the many experimental and conventional aspects of the festival. Yes, we see some of the "hippier" trappings like the bike inventions and the "modern" art, but we also see a spirit of kindness and joy of life that is missing from most modern celebrations. I certainly didn't expect complete performances, but most are long enough to get the feeling and vibe of the moment. This also kept the film moving at a faster pace, and acknowledges that while some like Björk or Radiohead, others might not like them enough to stand a complete performance by some of these artists; for these, a little will go a long way. "Coachella" doesn't claim to be a "concert film", and thank God it isn't. I hope another set is released with complete performances, because I would love to see them, but in the context of a concert DVD.

2 out of 5 stars How To Fritter Away An Awesome Music Documentary Opportunity..........2006-05-08

Pre-empting the imminent release of a film surrounding the awesome UK festival Glastonbury, California's music event most closely aligned with its English counterpart is here given similar documentary treatment. A lack of linear progression or narration means that the footage contains none of the flair that appearances from acts such as The Pixies, Radiohead and Morrissey should create. Songs are rarely featured in their entirety, unrelated genres are unsympathetically banked up against each other and the whole project becomes an aimless souvenir tribute that segregates against viewers who haven't experienced this festival held on polo fields in a man-made oasis. The Flaming Lips, Fischerspooner and The Arcade Fire try to lighten proceedings, but this is a scrambled opportunity.
The DVD extras include additional photographs, a colour booklet and interviews with bands such as Ben Harper, The Dresden Dolls and The Libertines, none of whom actually feature on the documentary itself. What a bloody waster.

4 out of 5 stars I love this Concert.......2004-04-09

I've owned this DVD for a couple of years now and I absolutely love this band. This is the greatest band in the world and this is them in there early years.

This is a great show. It was recorded live at Southend Cliffs Pavillion on April 17 1995. It's in front of a good crowd and is a great concert.

Just about everything from "Definetly Maybe" is included in the concert. You have some of the singles like "Sad Song" and "Good To Be Free" on it. You also get "Some Might Say" in it's early days. The energy is really there on the song.

I love Noel's acoustic set on the DVD. He does it in all of there concerts. I got to see him in a show in Miami where Liam lost his voice. This set isn't as good as it, but it's still worthy. It's not a huge set and he actually messes up on one of the songs. While he is playing "D'Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman? he messes up. He says the wrongs word to a totally different song. It's so awesome.

I love this DVD. It has so many great early Oasis songs. There is a lot of energy displayed from both the crowd and the band. I don't think it's as good as "Familiar to Millions," but it's better than "There and Then." This one is a must for hardcore Oasis fans.

4 out of 5 stars Live Forever by The Sea.......2003-08-09

The DVD- "Live by the Sea", captures the intense bi-polar nature of Oasis: the triumph and failure, the excitement and the disapointment. The greatest thing about Oasis is their honesty.. Oasis never fakes it, and this DVD bears proof of that.

The performances on "Live by the Sea" either reach scorching heights, or fall with a thud. "Slide Away", one of the most powerful songs in the Oasis discography, doesn't seem to translate well into the live performance on this DVD. Liam Gallaghers live vocals do not here match what he achieved with the recorded masterpiece on the "Definitely Maybe" CD. The mighty "Cigarettes & Alcohol" and "Live Forever" also fall short of the sonic majesty of their LP cousins.

Any disapointment felt from where Oasis stumbles, however, is over-powered by the tunes where Oasis hit their mark. The raucous opener, "Rock & Roll Star", is a splendid dirge that bears the energy and bravado of Liam and Noels Rock & Roll heritage."Columbia" is sheer perfection in its insidious power, and Noel's acoustic "Talk Tonight" is profoundly moving.

The Crown Jewel of "Live by the Sea", however, is the astounding performance of "Some Might Say". This DVD is an early performance by Oasis, and to hear this well loved song in its infancy is a privledge. Liams intense yowling, somehow blends perfectly with the lyrics to mezmerizing effect, pointing the way to Liams future as one of Rocks greatest singers.

The cool thing about this DVD is that it captures Oasis in their beginnings. The band is still rough around the edges, and you are struck especially by how young Liam was and how different his voice sounded. But with that youth comes the excitement and energy of a band on its way to the top. Throughout their career, Oasis have achieved greatness with incredible songs and blistering performances. They have also achieved incredible lows with their in-fighting and sporadic anti-fan sentiments. One thing this DVD makes certain, however, is that Oasis never fake it and they are always willing to deliver the un-expected.

4 out of 5 stars Good concert....video is out-of-print? Shame..........2000-11-23

Recorded in a small-ish venue (which reminds me of when I first saw them in Indianapolis, Indiana) this is a high energy show put on by the band in the days just before they really hit it big. What's so amazing about Oasis was that they could sound so full of energy and yet barely move around on stage. Most of the "anti-Oasis" people I have met say they hate the band because of their attitudes. That they are so full of themselves. Wrong! If Oasis are indeed "full of themselves" why would they allow embarrassing mistakes to remain in the video? During "D'Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman" Noel completely screws up and stops the song, looking rather foolish. IF he was "full of himself", don't you think he would've edied that out so he could look "perfect"?Oasis put out non album B-sides like crazy and unlike some bands, performed them with as much vigor live as they did their hit singles. Such is the case with the soaring "Acquiesce" and the rocking "Headshrinker".During Noel's acoustic set (which is usually my favorite part as I love Noel's voice) as he sang "Sad Song" in that plaintive tone, the spotlight showed off his dreamy eyes. *sigh*Liam's audience banter is not up to par with say, a Freddie Mercury and what he does say is very hard to understand with his thick accent. Oh well. The lighting they had set up, though not overwhelming, was just enough to give a dreamy atmosphere which, coupled with one of Noel's guitar solos, puts you in a different state of mind.A .... fine show it is and could turn a non-believer over to our side..making them "Mad fer it!"

2 out of 5 stars Music rated 5, Video rated 1..........2001-05-26

I am and have been a TD fan since the Rubycon days. I had owned the Tangerine Dream CD "Oasis" for quite some time before purchasing the video. There is nothing technically wrong with the video, but I believe that the music stands on it's own without the visuals. In my opinion, the video does not compliment the music. I still listen to the CD on a regular basis, but haven't been inclined to watch the video anymore.

5 out of 5 stars A great blending of image and music, Tangerine Dream style!.......2000-11-17

When I bought my very first DVD player, the first disc that I bought to try it out with was Tangerine Dream's "Oasis". Was it a wise choice? Absolutely! I have been following the music of these German synth-rock legends for over 15 years, and I have seen the band go through many changes of membership and musical direction, so as a long-time fan I can honestly say that there is nothing about "Oasis" that disappointed me! If you are looking for a Tangerine Dream concert video, then "Oasis" is not going to be what you are looking for (although I would strongly recommend T.D.'s fine 1992 concert video "220 Volt Live"). For those new to the group, "Oasis" is a sequel of sorts to one of T.D.'s earlier video releases, "Canyon Dreams", which boasted a similar visual and musical format. Recorded in 1998 by the father and son keyboard team of Edgar and Jerome Froese, and with images courtesy of video artist/director Gary Warriner, "Oasis" is an expertly crafted blending of beautifully-filmed American Southwest landscapes, and T.D.'s pulsating, sweeping, intense, texural synth music. It's really quite amazing how well that the picture and sound just blend into one another as a unified whole. The music here is easily among the group's best, and I must confess a special fondness for the tracks "Zion", "Reflections", "Waterborne", and "Summer Storm" . Perhaps my only complaint is that with a running time of only 44 minutes, I could have watched/listened to a lot more of this! NOTE: The audio CD version of "Oasis" (released by Tangerine Dream's own label, TDI Music) includes a bonus track not featured on the DVD, as well as a longer, superior version of the track "Hopi Mesa Heart" (which is heard briefly over the closing credits of the DVD.) If you are interested only in the T.D. music, and don't have much interest in the visual aspects, then the CD will probably a better value for your money. Although for the die-hard fan, I recommend owning both.

3 out of 5 stars Oasis.......2000-07-21

Having bought the DVD instead of the tape, I was a little dissapointed in the digital transfer. Having said that, I guess I don't really mind it after about two minutes. Most of Oasis is filmed with in 200 miles of the Grand Canyon. I have been to about 80% of the places shown in the video. For me, this is a video album with music that captures the area of southern Utah where Zion N.P., Bryce N.P., Rainbow Bridge N.M., Cedar Breaks N.P., and many other places. Matter of fact, they show more of Bryce than Cedar Breaks in the song Cedar Breaks. Habing seen the Canyon Dreams video eons ago and found it a little boring, this I can watch over and over when I want to relive a little of my past. The only are on the DVD that is not anywhere near the Grand Canyon is during the track "Summer Storm". That was filmed more to the south around Pheonix and/or Tuscon. The catus type shown is only found in southern Arizona, southern New Mexico, and Northern Mexico. I think I am going to get Canyon Dreams though so that I have it because I keep seeing a section of it on a local independent TV.

2 out of 5 stars ýCanyon Dreamsý revisitedýbut something is missing.......2000-02-18

This disc presents some 40 or so minutes worth of music by synthesiser specialists, Tangerine Dream, accompanied by spectacular time-lapse and close-up images captured in the canyon lands of the American Southwest. And while that may sound odd put that way round, it is abundantly clear that the music is intended to be the main feature here, with the images adding another dimension to Tangerine Dream's haunting music. And, yes, if you think you've seen and heard it all before with "Canyon Dreams", you're quite right! This is very much a rehash of that film. It is slightly longer (not much) and with better, more polished images and stronger music. So it should be better, right? Ah, well...

The images presented are certainly all very beautiful-although some of the repeated camera tricks become a little tiresome on occasion-and the music is an absolute delight (I've reviewed that separately in the CD section of Amazon). The trouble is, I'm not entirely sure that the two actually work well together. I found that I would be concentrating on either one or the other, but never both together. I also never gained any sense of the two being actually connected in any sense.

I suspect that there are two reasons for this. The first is the complete absence of any sounds other than the music. Although wind and water sounds, bird song, etc, feature in each chapter's title screens, none of this carries through into the tracks themselves. This results in a completely artificial view of things, with the complete loss of the natural aural environment-highlighted, of course, by its presence during the title screens. This loss is sometimes very annoying, particularly during scenes which would carry a lot of natural sound-like the views of rushing water, for instance, or close-ups of the wind rattling Aspen leaves-leaving me at times with the feeling that I'd been struck deaf! This problem is then compounded by the lack of any cueing of visual events to events within the music, further emphasising the lack of connection between the two. For these reasons, the parts of this production that work best are those in which the images are sufficiently abstract for the brain to accept the music as the natural accompaniment to the images. The `Reflections' chapter is the best example of this, with colourful close-ups of water surfaces, or a time-lapsed retreat of the tide from a beach creating fascinating and oft-times hypnotic images which Tangerine Dream's music complements to perfection. Such moments are in the minority, however, and for most of the disc, images and music actually seem to be in conflict, with each fighting the other for the viewer's attention. Altogether a great shame!

The disc's uncompressed PCM audio soundtrack ensures that the reproduction quality of the music is exemplary. Sadly, the image quality is not of a similar high standard. Although generally good, resolution is not always as high as one would expect of DVD. Pity too that it isn't in widescreen format-a treatment that the canyons surely scream out for?

If you're a fan of Tangerine Dream, you'll undoubtedly want this disc. Lovers of natural beauty will like the cinematography, but might just find the soundtrack a little annoying. Of course, if you're the sort of person who tours the Grand Canyon with your Walkman in your ears, and turned up full, this is just for you! (Let me know when you'll be there and I'll keep away!)

(Incidentally, this disc has no region encoding on it and will play on any DVD player.)

(Incidentally, this disc has no region encoding on it and should play on any DVD player.)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-05-18

This is an excellent, breathtaking DVD which I strongly recommend to anyone who is interested in natural beauty of Baja, Mexico. Both underwater and land shots are extraordinary. I am specificaly impressed by richness of marin life in this regoin. A+

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie about a wonderful place.......2003-09-03

This is a wonderful movie about the amazing Baja California Peninsula, mainly focused on the biodiversity of the Gulf of California. The characters (marine biologists and ecologists), transmit their enthusiasm and love for this beautiful place.
There are some breathtaking views, for example a scene of a dead, floating whale fulfilling the life cycle and some gorgeous aerial views (the one I liked best is the bird's view of the observatory, which is where I happen to work). The film is focused mainly on sea and seashore life, although it also touches the Geology of the Baja California Peninsula (a nice and enlightening computer simulation) and some of its unique plant and animal life. The movie is too short for my taste, it ends before you even had a chance to savor the scenes. It left me longing for all those hundreds of hours the filmmakers say they filmed!! This movie gives you a little, in fact too little, taste of one of the most beautiful places on Earth! If you love Baja, this movie will bring tears into your eyes! I really recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars Not so wonderfull DVD........2005-12-16

This DVD is commerating 10 years since the release of Oasis's dbut album in August 1994, and it would be fair to say they've released an album (expection to Morning Glory) thats done it justice since.
After Be Here Now, Oasis have released a string of pointless records that go absolutley no where, their latest (Don't Beleive The Truth) being the most unartistic statement they've yet to make, yet hailed as a return to form because it won awards and made it to number one, which of course means nothing as their has been nothing else to come out in a blue moon that has shook anything up in recent times.

This band sold out after their "Standing on the shoulder of Giants" album that was released in 2000.

The DVD is sad to watch because you get the feeling the band a more a nostalgia act (much like whats become of U2 and The Rolling Stones these days) rather than making any impact as a band for there music at the present time.
And the DVD concentrating on the album is mostly gossip from journalists and radio announcers and the newer members of the band, and Mani from the Stone Roses raving about how great they think it is, and of course Liam and Noel Gallaghar reflecting on how many times they had to record it, as well as they're producer Owen Morris who spends more time swearing than anything else (and what else can he say? We recorded the album, I was the only one who knew how to mix the record - simple)

Funnily enough, its nice to see Bonehead again and his parts the most interesting.

As for the extras, its just Noel reflecting on stories that last for 20 seconds, the best part is the bonus DVD.

Overall a complete waste of time from a band that should be doing alot better these days.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the Music + 4 stars for the Interviews = 9 stars.......2005-09-07

Like Keith Moon and Pete Townshend from the Who, Liam and Noel from Oasis merit 5 stars for their comedic skills alone. That they also deliver the goods musically on this, their finest album, is worth another 4 stars. My only complaint is that the interviews aren't longer.

Since Amazon won't let me rate this 9 stars, I'll do the next best thing and share some of the DVD secret tracks with you. There may be more, but these are the ones I do know:

* DVD Secrets *

Rock 'N' Roll Star audio track - press down on your DVD remote for an interview about Liam wanting bag pipes on Rock 'N' Roll Star.

Supersonic audio - press down for music theory.

Cigarettes & Alcohol audio - press down for interview with Noel about the song.

Slide Away audio - press down for interview about the name Definitely Maybe.

Married With Children audio - press down for the letter from Guigsy on why he was not on the DVD.

Sad Song audio - during the black intro, press down for audio clips of the legendary "Wibling Rivalry" interview.

Live Forever audio - press down for interview with Noel about wanting Live Forever as track three on the album.

Press angle on Live Forever, Shakermaker, Supersonic and Cigarettes & Alcohol for US versions of the videos.

2 out of 5 stars Not necessarily so special.......2005-08-14

If you already have this album on CD there isn't much point in buying this unless you simply can't live without it. I was extremely disappointed. I had thought it had a 5.1 soundtrack which is what the UK reviews indicated. Turns out that the Region 4 release only has PCM stereo and Dolby 2.0. Since the extras are thing you watch only once or twice, it is hard to recommend it. If you do decide to buy it, make sure your version has the 5.1 soundtrack!

5 out of 5 stars Not a bad outing........2005-05-16

10 years since the greatest debut album ever......probably....yeah definitley.
Well what a great reason to release, a DVD more celebrating ten years of Oasis rather than the record, as gooder record as it is, its nothing (on the whole) that changed the musical world, but more woke it up and said, this is what its all about, we mean it, and they did and still do, despite their albums falling short of expectations, and not only that.

They are still the most important band in the world.

4 out of 5 stars OASIS: their finest hour.......2004-12-08

This is a lot better than some of the other Oasis DVDs. Their first album is highly regarded. There are no weak songs. Their later albums don't hold up as well. It does seem like a lot if you have the albums, have seen Live Forever, have read Q Magazine and NME for the past ten years, and read Britpop by John Harris, like I have. There is not much new. I am not the biggest Oasis either. But I didn't mind because I haven't heard this record in five years. People say that "Live Forever" is the best songs and this album is the best debut album of all time.
