Rising Welsh star Ioan Gruffud (Titanic, Horatio Hornblower) stars as Solomon to Nia Robert's Gaenor in director Paul Morrison's OscarĀ®-nominated tale of star-crossed lovers living in the wrong place (Wales) at the wrong time (1911). Solomon is a Jewish packman who travels door to door selling fabric from his family's shop to the locals. It is on one such occasion that he meets Gaenor, the soft-spoken daughter of a miner. The attraction is mutual, but he conceals his true identity from her. A few visits (and one red dress) later, and Gaenor has fallen in love with the kindly "Sam" and has even introduced him to her family. But the more he resists her attempts to meet his family, the more she becomes convinced that hers is right and that his intentions are not honorable. Solomon is just as much in love, but he knows that his family would never accept Gaenor (any more than hers would accept him) if they knew the whole truth.

In the end, it isn't his lies that put their lives in jeopardy, but the fear and intolerance the lies were meant to keep at bay. The message may be heavy handed, but Gruffud and Roberts assay their roles with conviction and skill--a portion of his dialogue is in Yiddish and hers in Welsh. While they are together, Solomon and Gaenor speak the same language. English? Yes, but more importantly, the language that knows no borders--love. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Only one film under his belt, and already Flynn Carsen (Noah Wylie) is talking like Indiana Jones. "Relax," he tells a companion before daringly retrieving an ancient artifact before it can be used for evil. "This kind of stuff happens to me all the time." A character of modest charms (much like this made-for-cable movie), Carsen is not your typical movie action hero. His brain serves him better than his brawn. Early on, his knowledge of vegetation plays a key role in a cliff-jumping escape from pursuing bad guys. Carsen, for those just tuning in, is a librarian at the Metropolitan Library, which secretly houses history's mythic artifacts, including the sword Excalibur, and the Shroud of Turin. The fate of the world is once again in Carsen's hands when a map to the legendary King Solomon's Mines is stolen. Carsen embarks on another fantastic global adventure, with stops in Casablanca (with inevitable references to the Humphrey Bogart classic) and Kenya. This time, he has new female companionship, Emily (Gabrielle Anwar), a beautiful archaeologist who can match the much-educated Carsen degree for degree. Reprising their roles from the first film are Olympia Dukakis as Flynn's meddling mother, who tries to fix him up with his third cousin ("You'll have plenty to talk about"), Jane Curtin as flinty library administrator, Charlene ("Save your receipts"), and Bob Newhart as his mentor, Judson. Savvy viewers will see plot twists and character revelations coming from a mile away, but that is all part of the fun, as are the hokey special effects and knowing humor ("There's always a secret passage," Carsen observes while navigating a catacomb). Who know if there will ever be another Indiana Jones movie. Until then, The Librarian is worth checking out, especially on DVD, where it can be enjoyed without intrusive commercial interruption. --Donald Liebenson

Fans of Oliver Stone's J.F.K. will recognize the opening moments of writer-director Eugene Jarecki's Why We Fight, in which outgoing President Dwight Eisenhower warns of the pernicious and growing influence of what he called the "military-industrial complex." But Stone's movie, which uses the same footage, was a work of fiction. While those who disagree with the decidedly leftist point of view in this documentary will probably consider it the product of paranoid liberal fantasy as well, there's enough credible material, much of it supplied by the targets of Jarecki's criticisms, to make Eisenhower look like a prophet and everyone else uneasy about the dark confluence of politics, money, and war that controls the country's fortunes. The message here is that while there may be some who sincerely believe that America's various military engagements (in Iraq, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, and elsewhere) since World War II are the product of our God-given duty to spread freedom and halt the influence of evil ideologies around the world, the real reason we fight is that war is good business. This is hardly a bulletin; anyone who is surprised by allegations that politicians pander to defense contractors, or that Vice President Dick Cheney helped secure huge deals for Halliburton, the company he formerly headed, simply hasn't been paying attention (Politicians lie? How shocking!). In fact, the principal drawback to Jarecki's film is simply that there's nothing particularly revelatory or compelling about it. Only when he takes a personal approach does he go beyond the obvious; the story of a retired New York policeman and former Vietnam veteran whose son died in the World Trade Center, who wanted revenge, but who became seriously disillusioned when Bush admitted that the war in Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, adds some much needed human interest. Still, Why We Fight, which includes a director's audio commentary track and a few other bonus features, serves as a grim reminder that the world's most powerful nation has strayed far from the principles of our founding fathers, a development that does not bode well for America's future. --Sam Graham

Description

Why We Fight is the provocative new documentary from acclaimed filmmaker Eugene Jarecki (The Trials of Henry Kissinger) and winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.

Named after the series of short films by legendary director Frank Capra that explored America's reasons for entering World War II, Why We Fight surveys a half-century of military conflicts, asking how - and answering why - a nation of, by and for the people has become the savings-and-loan of a government system whose survival depends on an Orwellian state of constant war.

The Why We Fight DVD features interviews and observations by a "who's who" of military and Washington insiders including Senator John McCain, Gore Vidal, and Dan Rather. Beginning with President Dwight D. Eisenhower's prescient 1961 speech warning of the rise of the "military industrial complex," Why We Fight moves far beyond the headlines of various American military operations to the deeper questions of why America seemingly is always at war. What are the forces - political, economic, and ideological - that drive us to clash against an ever-changing enemy? Just why does America fight? Unforgettable, powerful and at times disturbing, Why We Fight on DVD will challenge viewers long after the last fade-out.

5 out of 5 stars Why We Fight.......2007-07-01

The film was well written and brought a lot of issues to the forefront, of which I had either never known or never thought about. It was scarey to see President Eisenhower fortell the future as to how our goverment would become almost non-democratic and very close to a dictatorship.
If all Americans would see this film, maybe they would become more aware of the facts of issues facing them in the present. It's obvious we have not learned from the past.

4 out of 5 stars interesting documentary; not just another Bush basher.......2007-06-27

I found this documentary to be absorbing, though not riveting. It
covered a long period of time, back to the Eisenhower administration
and his famous speech warning of the danger of an uncontrolled Military
Industrial complex. Worthwhile for those interested in American history.

2 out of 5 stars More of the Same .......2007-06-23

The basic premise of the film is that the post-WWII militarization of the United States has created a collusion among the Pentagon, private defense industry, Congress, and think-tanks that has led to political corruption and profiteering among other things. While the film does make some good points, there is nothing here that is original or even very insightful. What starts out as a documentary with terrific potential ends as a diatribe about the evils of the Bush administration and the "real" motives for invading Iraq.

The director is clearly trying to reach out to his core audience of people who want to reaffirm their hatred for the Bush administration and impressionable young people who do not keep up with politics or current events so that they too can one day recite the anti-war, anti-Bush talking points. While I am not a supporter of the Bush administration in any way or an advocate for the Iraq war, a documentary needs to present all the facts and nuances so that the audience can decide for itself. Clearly, this film does not add anything to the national discourse about America's role in the world. Its only saving grace is that it does remind us of Eisenhower's prophetic words of the great dangers of a military industrial complex to a democratic nation.

5 out of 5 stars we didn't listen.......2007-06-13

In his farewell address to the nation on January 17, 1961, President Dwight Eisenhower warned the country about the "disastrous rise of misplaced power" and the "grave implications" of the military-industrial complex. Today our country has 700 military bases in 60 countries, and in any given year will conduct "operations" of some sort in 170 countries. This documentary purports to show the breadth and depth of American militarism, that, for example, it is by no means limited to one president or administration. Instead, it's a thinly veiled and very effective attack on Bush and the Iraq war, which is important in its own right (not to mention an easy target). But the film could have accomplished so much more if it had fulfilled its promise to cast a broader net, as Andrew Bacevich does in The New American Militarism and Stephen Kinzer does in Overthrow. George Washington and James Madison both issued strident warnings about standing armies. Watching Halliburton's war-profiteering and the interview with the director of the Baghdad morgue in this film filled me with anger and sadness at how little our governments have heeded their words, whether in the Iraq disaster or all the way back to Eisenhower who as a general experienced the real human toll of war.

3 out of 5 stars Follows the beaten path but insightful.......2007-06-12

After the all that we know about the debacle that is the Iraq war, this documentary does not reveal any shocking truths. It blames the 'military industrial war machine' for un-necessary wars, but any informed citizen knows that already, and as the documentary suggests, knows we are powerless to do anything about it. Even though the documentary repeats the same reasons that are fortunately mainstream now with this unpopular war, it does offer some insight into the history and the beginnings of the `profit greedy machine' that drives American wars.

If the delightful spectacle of preteen kids dancing the foxtrot and the merengue isn't enough to lure you in, add the pressure of a dance competition and the triumph of troubled kids finding self-respect through discipline--if Mad Hot Ballroom were a Hollywood movie, it would be too corny for words. Instead, it's an engrossing documentary about a wildly successful after-school program in New York City. Mad Hot Ballroom follows a handful of kids in three different schools from the beginning of their dance classes to the night of the inter-school dance finals. Regrettably, the movie fails to pursue the dancers themselves; a few scenes provide glimpses of some smart, articulate kids with vivid personalities and compelling emotions, but the filmmakers make a minimal effort to draw the kids out or explore their lives outside of the classes. Watching the kids develop as dancers is still gripping and the final competition will have you on the edge of your seat, but it could have been all the more so. Though certainly worthy and genuinely heartwarming, you can't help but feel that Mad Hot Ballroom lost an opportunity for something truly dazzling. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars going for the gold.......2007-04-28

this documentary is great until the halfway point. then it sort of turns into 'rocky' for preteen ballroom students.

but getting to this eventual point is filled with joys and heartbreaks. as a teacher, i can't watch the middle section. i just want to cry too. it's not so much because of the loss, but it's because of the accomplishment as well. this documentary is very much about the students' but you can't miss the folks that teach them something that requires extra time and preparation. they have fun, but they also feel their dreams of glamour and success revive as well. and the many forms that takes, from emotional tearbreaks to momma rose-like grit, are very real and equally powerful.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2007-04-10

Mad Hot Ballroom is inspirational. The kids featured are fantastic. We adults can learn from them. They undertake something new to them and fly with it. Seeing the kids develop from the beginning stage to city champs is amazing. Listen to the messages provided by the kids themselfs. They have their visions and goals and I have no doubt that they will reach them. Kudos to the teachers for their commitment and dedication to improving our society one child at a time. I highly recommend this movie to both children and adults.

    5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2007-03-09

I bought this as a gift. The recipient loves it. It arrived very fast. I am very pleased.

    5 out of 5 stars INSPIRATION PERSONIFIED.......2007-03-08

What an inspirational and joyful documentary this was! The teachers, music, judges, producers and most of all every child involved in this project are to be congratulated for a job well done! You won't be able to watch this beautiful piece of work just one time! This movie was a breath of fresh air - something the whole family can watch and enjoy! I cared about these children, and I would love to see where they are 10 years from now. I truly wish everyone who took part in this production much love and continued personal success! It didn't matter what color the ribbon or ranking - for me, every single participant was a winner!

5 out of 5 stars It will bring Celebration tears to your eyes.......2007-03-06

I was an inner city high school teacher for 33 years, wierd part is I was an athletic coach, but i think anything like this is great for kids, and gives them so much pride in themselves and raises their self esteem. I worked with kids that had so little but all they wanted was someone to believe in them. God bless those teachers and administrators who work in the city schools.
When i watch this documentary I know what i liked best about teaching for 33 years, I loved the kids.. They should show this in all gym classes so that the kids will see what its like to learn something that's special. It also does much for race relations and human feelings to see that all people aspire the same things for their children regardless of what race or religion they are.

A century old storyteller and his grandson, a troubled 17 year old boy embarks on a cross country journey toward self-discovery. Like Old Pete's wise tales themselves, Dreamkeeper is important and illuminating storytelling for the entire family.

While it doesn't hold together as a three-hour TV drama, Dreamkeeper should prove enthralling to anyone interested in Native American myths and legends. A variety of tribal folklore provides the episodic thrust of this typical Hallmark production, which relies too heavily on digital effects--and the plodding direction of Hallmark regular Steve Barron--in telling the story of a resentful Lakota teenager (Eddie Spears) who reluctantly agrees to drive his wise old grandfather (August Schellenberg) from their South Dakota "rez" to an All-Nations Powwow in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Along the way, the tradition-bound elder serves as tribal "dreamkeeper" for his initially resistant grandson, who gradually realizes that his grandfather's stories--visualized through effects-laden reenactments involving all manner of magic and mystery--are essential in preserving the fading cultures of the Lakota and the several other tribes whose folklore depends on unbroken generations of oral tradition. While some of the lavishly dramatized tales can stand alone as authentic Native American myth-making, Dreamkeeper lacks the overall structure that could've given the stories a cumulative magical impact. Still, it's an admirable attempt to introduce neglected cultures into the television mainstream. --Jeff Shannon

    5 out of 5 stars Dream Keeper.......2007-06-01

We love this movie. We had it on VHS, we had taped it off of the TV. The tape has been watched so many times, it was beginning to wear out. I decided to look for it online. You don't know how happy we were when I found it. Thank you so much!

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-05-30

The Amazon.com reviewer didn't give this movie the credit that it deserves!

This is one of my favorite films about Native Americans. It features well known Native American actors such as August Schellenberg, Floyd Red Crow Westerman and Tantoo Cardinal, among others. I've watched the DVD too many times to count. If you're interested in Native American culture, then you'll find that this production is a real treat.

    5 out of 5 stars So moving!.......2007-05-30

This is a remarkable film/study of the great lore and legends of the Native American Nations.
The special effects were magical! As a white person, I feel privileged to have been allowed to peek through the veil which has protected the privacy of the Lakota People' s legends. It was as if I had been personally invited to learn about the "Mysteries".

It was moving to watch the relationship between Grand'Pa and Shane take on a new dimension, which ultimately put Shane back on the "Red Road". The Native American family has something very special: a long, long history to draw upon.

Loved the film as well the added bonus of having the Sound Track CD, which I play over and over.
    A "must see" and a "keeper"....Well done!

    5 out of 5 stars legends.......2007-05-13

A great movie. Plenty of action and humor. An honest story with plenty of moral values of the people. A good insight into the Indian explanation of life. Very authentic.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, lets have more dreamkeepers.......2007-04-30

When the movie starts, one may think that got a wrong movie. But, if one be aptient enough, emotions will get its place. I smiled and cried many times.

Not short on murder, mayhem, or any other screwball '70s conventions, Foul Play is a wonderful vehicle for Goldie Hawn. She plays Gloria, a librarian "ready to take a chance again," who ends up the target of an assassination ring. Chevy Chase, fresh off of Saturday Night Live, does the closest thing to real acting he would ever achieve (okay, maybe Fletch) as Tony, the cop assigned to protect Gloria. Dudley Moore made an indelible impression on American audiences as Stanley Tibbets, a surprisingly kinky symphony conductor. But it's the quirky things that make this film: the grandmothers playing Scrabble with expletives, Burgess Meredith's snake Esme, the old Japanese couple in the back of the careening limo. From the opening credits with Barry Manilow crooning the title song, this is a fond trip down memory lane. --Keith Simanton

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It makes me happy inside.......2007-06-28

This is a movie I can enjoy over and over, like a favorite fairy tale.

Where do I begin? Goldie Hawn as Gloria Mundy is gutsy yet tender, assertive without being obnoxious, and funny, funny funny.

The plot is multi level. If you care about such things, it's an intriguing concept that international terrorists want to kill the pope in order to force taxation of churches. If that's a yawn for you, just enjoy the running around and avoiding the bad guys. It's both a tribute to and a sendup of both Hitchcock and cop movies.

If you like classical music, the entire operetta of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado is the soundtrack, (almost) completely in sequence. (OK, there's some BeeGees mixed in, too.) If you don't like opera, just ignore it, you don't have to understand it to have it add to the fun.

Some of the details are marvelous!! In all my life, no matter how "serious" the movie is, I have never seen a good-guy gunshot scene done so well. (Chevy Chase as cop Tony Carlson has the bad guy in his sight, realizes he can't make the shot without endandering an innocent bystander, and declines to shoot--rather than shooting away anyhow!) The lead up to what Stanley Tibbits does for a living is hilarious and strangely subtle. And the Scrabble game could stand alone in any comedy show.

This is the acting career that got away from Chevy Chase--he does nuanced irony ("Stiltskin...I've heard that name somewhere before") and pratfalls with equal aplomb. If he'd stayed with directors that kept him from chewing the scenery in other movies, what would he have accomplished?

OK, some of the details are silly--how in the world did Gloria's clothes get in Tony's apartment? Why do the bad guys let her keep her pocketbook?

But in the long run it's fun, and they all (good guys, anyway) lived happily ever after.

    5 out of 5 stars Just fun.......2007-06-26

A movie to watch for fun. Nothing earth shattering, but very enjoyable. One of my all time favorite movies

    5 out of 5 stars A great Chevy Chase/Goldie Hawn movie! .......2007-05-23

Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase have done many movies together, but this one is by far my favorite of them all! I love the scenes with Dudley Moore.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite movie.......2007-04-10

This has always been my favorite movie. I love being able to order the old movies on DVD.

    5 out of 5 stars Foul Play.......2007-02-19

I watched this movie when I was a teenager, when it was classified as a 'B' movie. In those days, you got a 'B' movie first then the main feature. I have always remembered it and even watching it now a quarter of a century later it still is as funny and comical as I remember. The charecters are original and the plot plausable. The only thing I never understood was why the team lead by Chevy Chase couldnt work out it was the pope who was going to be shot. When they knew all along that the biggest hit man west of Chicago had been hired to do the job? The pope was to visit San Francisco in a few days so to me it was logical that he was going to be the target.

An atmospheric and sexy crime caper, this stars Dennis Quaid as a New Orleans police detective. He's a smooth talker who butts heads with the new assistant district attorney, Ellen Barkin. She's rigid and plays by the rules; he is mildly corrupt. They soon find themselves romantically entwined, and a bit chagrined.

Director Jim McBride (Great Balls of Fire) was in top form with this 1987 sizzler. You may not remember the particulars of the plot, which concerns supposed gang killings and police corruption, because it is the romance that has staying power. Blame this on Quaid and Barkin, who send off enough sparks to light up Bourbon Street. They are not only sexy together, but endearing, which makes you want to like them as much as they like each other. --Rochelle O'Gorman

    Very Interesting.

    3 out of 5 stars easy movie.......2007-02-17

While not a classic or a great movie, you will enjoy this one. The casting is good and Quaid and Barkin make a believable couple and the plot works for them. And although there are many cop movies this one pops out due to the good atmosphere and the couple's chemistry.

    3 out of 5 stars A must see.......2006-10-30

You have to see this movie if you like Dennis Quaid. I do have to say that being from New Orleans the way he talk is a little too much, but I can't help but love Dennis in this movie.

I have always loved this movie, and was thrilled to find it on DVD at such a reasonable price.

There were a lot of disappointments in the 2000 summer movie season, but Chicken Run wasn't one of them. Made by Aardman Animations, which produced the Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit shorts, this is a dazzling stop-motion animation film that is both deftly funny and surprisingly touching. The concept is simple: The Great Escape--with chickens. But directors Peter Lord and Nick Park take it much further than that (and remember: there's a whole generation out there that has no idea who Steve McQueen is). Julia Sawalha voices Ginger, a plucky English hen who has been trying to escape from Tweedy's chicken farm, where the vicious Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson) fries up any chicken who doesn't produce enough eggs. When egg profits slump, Mrs. Tweedy decides to turn her farm into a chicken-pie factory, giving new urgency to Ginger's plan. Enter Rocky the Flying Rooster (Mel Gibson), a brash American who has escaped from a circus and promises to teach the chickens to fly to safety. The film is filled with innumerable visual touches and the animation has a tactile quality that makes you want to reach out and touch these funny fowl. Above all, it's played with intelligence, wit, and heart--a rare combination in any film. While Chicken Run is being marketed to a youth audience, it truly is a family film that operates on both a child and an adult level. It would be a shame if grownups skipped it because they thought it was strictly for kids. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Chicken Run has such an wonderful message of hope........2007-06-13

Chicken Run came out when I had been laid off from my job and while I thoroughly enjoyed the film, I was also boosted by it's tremendous message of hope. Ginger Chicken replied to the comment "Our chances are one-in-a-million" with "Then there's still a chance." The story is so great and the characters so well crafted, in all the times I've seen the movie, I never find myself focusing on the production using clay-mation. One of these days, I'll have to watch it purely to marvel at what it must have taken to create it. I love the cleverly placed references to other prison movies, to Indiana Jones and to Star Trek. Whenever I am feeling despondent or beginning to feel there's no hope, I always return to Chicken Run and those plucky little chickens who just wouldn't give up.

    5 out of 5 stars But I don't want to be a pie!.......2007-06-10

A absolutely wonderful claymation that will have you cheering for Ginger and her coop of delightful chickens. Once again, I'm drawn to another story about the great fight for freedom...despite the fact I'm salivating for a nice chicken salad as I type this. This movie is a great family film and one you won't mind watching again and again. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY FAVORITES!!!.......2007-06-10

I'm an "adult" but I love this movie. I can watch it over and over and it's just as hilarious as the first time. A must see.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Mel..........2007-05-04

Cute movie and fun for the whole family. A rooster from America who is chicken until he meets the right chick!

5 out of 5 stars This Is A Very Funny Sweet Movie.......2007-04-08

Those cute chickens don't want to become part of the "Pot Pie" revolution so they come up with many escape plans. It's fun watching all the ideas they have go into action. Mr. and Mrs. Tweedy are fantastic. The animation is excellent especially it is clay-mation. I always though this movie deserved a part 2. Maybe Turkey Run?

    5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT.......2007-05-24

This was on of my favorite movies, I love Ozone Turbo and Kelly, she really cannot hip hop dance but she was trying. I love the plot and I loved how they beat Electro Rock in the end and they all ended up dancing together.

    5 out of 5 stars Breakdancin' Passion.......2007-05-17

I remember going to Smiths, with my mom as a child, and renting this movie at least three times a week. I couldn't get enough of it. I would watch this movie with such enthusiasm, that I can't even remember what else I would do as a child, besides riding my bike and going to school. I would try my best to practice the moves in the movie, and work on my locking and popping skills. But then the Smiths store in our town closed, and I eventually forgot about Breakin', slowly it slipped from my mind.
But even now, as I remember the movie, the dance moves and hip-hop music is just as awesome and addicting as it was when i was a kid.
It is true, that the plot is lacking... but this movie is about passion for dancing! and it's the dancing that makes up for the questionable acting and story line. The not so great story and acting is actually good for a laugh, making the movie worth while as an unintentional comedy. This movie serves it's purpose as entertaining and ejoyable to watch, that is, if you enjoy marveling at talented breakdancer's grooving to rad music. I will always love this movie, even if some might not agree with me, it is indeed, worth a watch.

UPDATE: 7 June 2007, I just watched Breakin' and I still love it just as much as i did then. Some of the parts were a little cheezy, but it really didn't matter, I also have rekindled my love for Ozone. YAY!

UPDATE: 18 June 2007, I have now watched it with a group of friends and we laughed and made fun of the cheezy parts, but also enjoyed and wowed the dancing, and sometimes, funny dancing scenes. This movie is still one of my favorites, in the category of crazy 80's movies. YAY!

3 out of 5 stars Break out the cardboard box!.......2007-03-23

Just like I remember it. Not as intense as the new breakin' moves these days, but just as fun to know how it all began.

If you grew up in that era, I know you'll dig this movie. Brings back so many breakin' and poppin' memories, just don't try it at your age...ha! Just kidding...enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars This is the classic! This is how you learn about breakdancing!.......2007-02-07

But what I wanna do is show you where this movie led me! Once I saw this I knew I had to learn breakdancing. I bought like every breakdancing video on amazon and my favorites are How To Do The Robot - Breakdance Instructional DVD or Top 20 Breakdance Moves. I love breakdancing so much I just want everybody to be able to do it.

So get this video and then get those ones later when you really wanna learn HOW to dance like they do in this movie.

    5 out of 5 stars great .......2007-01-10

it was great and it was the movie i was looking for but it was great
