In this 1942 melodrama, founded on the novel by Olivia Higgins Prouty (who also wrote the novel on which Stella Dallas was based), Bette Davis stars as Charlotte Vale, a dowdy, repressed woman who, overwhelmed by her domineering mother, is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. She finds help at a sanitarium from a kind psychiatrist (Claude Rains), who turns her into a beautiful, confident woman. As a new person, she takes a pleasure cruise, where she meets Jerry (Paul Henreid), an architect trapped in an unhappy marriage, saddled with a troubled daughter. The two fall in love, but, of course, the romance is doomed. Yet their paths cross on occasion, and, despite their feelings, Charlotte finds satisfaction in helping Jerry's depressed child. The film will seem familiar to new viewers--the campy style was the pattern for many tearjerkers to come, and its most famous line has been oft repeated ("Don't ask for the moon--we have the stars"). But the heartstrings are tugged, and as Paul Henreid chivalrously lights two cigarettes and hands one over to the doleful-eyed Davis, pull out the box of tissues--you're gonna need 'em. --Jenny Brown

Description
A tender love story, a taut psychological drama, an inspiring tale of physical and spiritual transformation. Now, Voyager is all three, as well as a Bette Davis career milestone, resulting in her sixth Best Actress Oscar nomination. She magically plays Charlotte Vale, a spinster who defies her domineering mother (fellow Oscar nominee Gladys Cooper) to discover love, heartbreak and eventual contentment. More magic is generated by a top-notch ensemble, Max Steiner?s Academy Award-winning score and an improvised moment by Paul Henreid that became an instant classic: he lights two cigarettes at once and hands one to Davis. For the ultimate in romantic melodrama, it?s Now Voyager now, then and forever.

I love Bette Davis and it's wonderful to be able to start a collection of all her movies at such good prices.
Now Voyager...Great.......2007-06-09
This VHS was in great condition, timely sent. It is one of Bette Davis'
finest; one we watch over & again; A true classic How it speaks to all of us today. May we look at ourselves through the mirror of our eyes and those who truly love us. May we find the strength and courage to face anyone (even parents) who paint a terrible, less than honest portrait of us; and may we learn that in this life, unconditional love, a selfless giving to another in need is a marvelous way to become whole and free.
Bette, Bette, Bette.......2007-06-08
If you like Bette Davis and you have never seen this movie -- you must! And, the Paul Henreid ad lib lighting of two smokes at the same time is a classic!
getting out from under a controlling mother.......2007-05-09
Excellent, beautifully costumed and lit film of 1942, starring young Bette Davis as a woman who gets out from under her bossy mother's thumb long enough to blossom into a sophisticate who falls in love with an unhappily married man. Later, she helps his sad daughter out of her depression. Good story and cast.
I tell you, that controlling mother of hers threw herself down the staircase on purpose!
"My mother! My mother! My mother! My mother!"
"Let's not ask for the moon...!".......2007-04-23
This is one of the truly classic Hollywood movies. There is so much that works in this Irving Rapper directed film: the Fred MacLean sets, the Orry-Kelly costumes, the superb score by Max Steiner, the cinematography by Sol Polito (he also filmed all those Warner musicals like "Golddiggers of 1933" and "42nd Street").
And the cast is marvelous from the stars to the bit players. The film is a modern ugly-duckling-turns-into-a-swan drama with enough of a twist to make it seem the kind of story that could happen today.
Bette Davis is the star, playing Charlotte Vale, the awkward spinster daughter in an extremely rich and Charles Addams-esquely weird band of Boston blue stockings. Gladys Cooper excels as Charlotte's selfish and manipulative mother, Mrs. Henry Windle Vale; she deserves the Golden Broomstick as one of the worst film mothers ever, up there with the conniving sinister Leopoldine Konstantin in "Notorious". Even the strongest personality would have a tough time not being psychologically scared by her machinations. Claude Rains is soothing as the wise and kindly Dr. Jaquith (what a contrast to HIS role in "Notorious"!) and Paul Heinreid is every bit as convincing as complex leading man Jerry Durrance here as he is in his best known role in "Casablanca". Juvenile actress Janis Wilson is engaging as Jerry's daughter Tina.
Even so, durable character actress Mary Wickes (best known to younger viewers from her nun role in "Sister Act" and as TV's Father Dowling's housekeeper) gets some of the best bits as Nurse Dora Pickford.
The film has many memorable moments, chief among them, Charlotte's first step onto the gangplank and the film's perfect ending line--surely one of the five greatest in all Hollywood history.

Even in the 21st century, very few film stars create and define their own genre--and certainly not in the complete way Bette Davis did. The Bette Davis Collection gives an exceptionally good survey of essential Bette, with four of the five films absolute knock-down classics from her long reign at Warner Bros. Davis's personality was so strong that she tended to overpower her directors, but William Wyler was one of the few to maintain his own distinctive style with her, and The Letter (1940) is a triumph for both of them. At a humid Malaysian plantation, Davis kills a man in the brilliant opening sequence, and the remainder is a darkly suggestive unraveling of the complicated explanation.
Dark Victory (1939) and Now, Voyager (1942) would be on anybody's list of most representative Davis pictures. In the former, she's a doomed heiress nobly losing her eyesight, a multiple-handkerchief situation that proved one of her biggest hits. Voyager allows Davis one of her favored techniques (appearing frumpy for at least part of her performance) as a mother-dominated spinster who comes out of her shell. Her match with Paul Henreid--and the music of Max Steiner--turns this into one luscious melodrama.
If Mr. Skeffington (1944) is not as celebrated as those films, it is nevertheless a characteristic Warners work-out. Davis wasn't shy about playing unsympathetic roles, and Fanny Skeffington--vain, selfish, married for practicality--is an exasperating tour de force. She gets good support from Claude Rains as the sensible, adoring husband. The Star (1952) is no classic, but its Pirandellian aspects will appeal to the actress's fans: Bette plays a washed-up Oscar-winning star desperate to get herself back in the public eye (think if it as a less witty postscript to All About Eve). There's some hint the main character is modeled more on Joan Crawford than Bette herself, in which case Davis must have loved playing it.
Extras are modest, with short featurettes giving background on three of the discs, and director Vincent Sherman providing commentary for Mr. Skeffington. But the films themselves, and their neurotically intense star, are quite capable of standing alone. --Robert Horton
Description
The Bette Davis Collection includes 3 new-to-DVD classics, featuring Davis in multiple Emmy-nominated performances as a captivating adulteress, a manipulative beauty, and a former Oscar-winning actress recovering from the end of her career.
Customer Reviews:
Changing my tune.......2007-05-05
As my tagline indicates I am mad about musicals, and I vowed I would never add dramas to my collection because with musicals, you can play the numbers over and over again, like a record, and enjoy. You can never tire of songs, dance and spectacle. But dramas? Once seen, to be put away for years, otherwise you become too familiar with the plot and the initial impact weakens. I revised my thinking with the release of the Bette Davis Collections because I realised that - in keeping with my love of musicals - every Bette Davis movie is a symphony. A symphony of emotions that equals major musical works - grand opera, concertos, and the subtlety of chamber ensembles. I also have a personal connection with "Dark Victory" and "Now Voyager". They were the work of screenwriter Casey Robinson, top Warner Brothers writer of the 30's and 40's, who retired with his Australian wife, Joan, to Sydney and became a close friend. Having heard all the stories, I asked him if Bette was difficult. "She never changed a line," he told me, "she respected a good script." Enough said. I worry a bit about them shoving "The Star" into this collection - it's a lesser vehicle when they could have included "The Old Maid" or "The Sisters"...but that's the deal, huh? It seems 'collections' are an opportunity to offload at least one minor low-budget movie. However, it's still interesting given Bette's typically bravura performance, and it's wonderful that her formidable contribution to cinema is preserved so magnificently. Go see what I think about Collection Two.
The Bette Davis Collection.......2007-02-23
Absolultely must have for any fan. It is great. I love "The Letter".
Regards
BRAVO!.......2007-02-17
My favorite is Mr. Skeffingtion. Talk about a dose of cold hard reality. That psychiatrist was a real trip! Very enjoyable movie.
Fabulous.......2006-12-23
Better is the best and fabulous in this box set. We've never had a better actress.
Bette Davis's Best Movies All In One Simple Box.......2006-11-04
People have often said that Bette Davis is the most versitile and simply the best actress to have come out of Hollywood, and until Meryl Streep came along I would agree with that statement, Bette Davis give remarkable performances in all five of these films, In The Letter, Bette Davis gives one of her finest performances a moody cheating housewife who murders her lover and then claims it was self defence, in Now Voyage she plays the shy and intraverted daughter of a controlling mother, when the mother dies she has trouble coming out of her shell and when she does she finds love, but none of it is that simple, a very good film, extremely good dialogue, all the films in this box set a brilliant and I would recommend these films to anyone that wants to watch a film with real actors that have real talent.

Great Barry Gibb Material.......2007-05-07
Boy, does Barry Gibb remind me of his younger brother Andy in this compliation of music videos for the Voyager album that are linked together in a story/dream sequence. Barry Gibb is a beautiful man - these videos were shot in the 1980's and reflect what type of videos were on the cutting edge back when videos were in their infancy. The making of the video short shows Barry's vision for the project and was enjoyable to watch.
WOW!!!.......2006-04-10
If you are a Barry Gibb fan this is a must see. I wish She Says and Face to Face were also in there but Barry is just wow no other words for it. The clean shaven Mr Gibb reminded me so much of Andy but the song as they all were are all Barry using the many different ways he can use his voice. I too could have done without You Driver. Kind of silly, but this is serious ear and eye candy for the Barry fans out there
A Full-Length Fantasy Video!.......2006-02-23
Finally, the DVD version of Barry Gibbs ambitious full-length music video is available after over twenty years. The video quality is slightly better than the VHS, but the sound is what makes the difference. Recorded in both Enhanced 2.1 Stereo and DTS 5.1, it is a music lover's fantasy. And speaking of fantasy, it's interesting to see Gibb piece together nine of the eleven songs from the album, "Now, Voyager" into a full-length feature film video. Some of it is dated and silly, ("I Am Your Driver"), some of it is sheer romance, ("One Night (For Lovers"), "Stay Alone") and the rest is just fascinating images set perfectly to each song. "Fine Line" with a clean-shaven Barry and an R&B band with two sexy black back-up singers is a highlight.
The film is strung together as a dream sequence where Gibb has a car accident in an irrigation channel and ends up in an old swimming bathhouse, where an elderly gentleman "guides" him through some of life's more important lessons, using the songs as threads. It's all fun and not too serious. It really is the music that makes it, and even with "She Says" and "Face To Face" missing, it is still a huge enjoyable experience.
Note that there is a 23-minute "making of" documentary with an all too serious 37 year-old Barry Gibb explaining the intent and purpose of this grand experiment.

Good Mixed Classic Set.......2007-03-22
In "Now Voyager" Bette Davis plays a great heartbreaking role in a tragic romance with Paul Henried. "Mildred Pierce" has Joan Crawford wonderfully playing an independent woman after her divorce. "For Me and My Gal" has Judy Garland well cast in a romantic musical. "Father of the Bride" with Spencer Tracy and Joan Bennett is excellent romantic comedy. "Dial M for Murder" is a suspenseful murder mystery with Ray Milland and Grace Kelly.
new titles please.......2006-07-29
if only the studios would stop repackaging films that have already been released and release some new material i would spend my $ but if by chance you dont already have these titles then this is a must they are all good films and the print quality is superb, 5* for the contents

Customer Reviews:
Interesting combination.......2005-01-21
I bought these separately before the package was made. I am not normally a fan of packaging unless it is a series or some other theme. However there is not a clinker in the bunch. I suggest you look at the individual reviews. However for those that are in a hurry:
Casablanca: Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman - Two people fall in love during war France as the Nazis are invading. They meet again in Casablanca the last outpost on the way to freedom. There is mystery, intrigue subterfuge and the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
The Maltese Falcon: Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor - Sam Spade (Bogart) is accused of murdering his partner, murdering a suspect, and down right sneakiness. He is trying to find out why everyone is looking for the black bird. In the process he falls in love with Brigid O'Shaughnessy (Mary Astor). Will they find the thing that dreams are made of?
A remake of the 1931 version.
The Philadelphia Story: Socialites Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn - A 1940 screen adaptation of The Philadelphia Story. C. K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant) and Tracy Samantha Lord (Katherine Hepburn) get divorced. Now Tracy is going to marry George Kittredge, who worked his way up the corporate latter to the top of a mine. C. K. brings people from Spy magazine to cover the event. The fun begins as every one has second thoughts. And Wicked Uncle Willie is available.
Arsenic and Old Lace: Cary Grant, Raymond Massey, Peter Lorre - A Halloween tale. A critic of marriage gets married, and then he finds out that insanity runs in the family as two branches of the family compare body counts. This really is a comedy. They could not get Boris Karloff; however Raymond Massey does just as well. And don't forget Dr. Einstein (auch der lieber).
The Big Sleep: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall - A 1946 adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel. Private-eye Philip Marlowe (Bogart) is hired to keep an eye on Carmen (Martha Vickers), youngest daughter of General Sternwood (Charles Waldron), and you guessed it falls in love with older sister. Lots of sub plots. "You go too far, Marlowe."
Now, Voyager: Betty Davis, Paul Henreid - Based on the novel by Olivia Higgins Prouty. I think one of the shockers for me was when Charlotte Vale was forced to remove her eye glasses to find she did not need them. "Don't ask for the moon--we have the stars"
Citizen Kane: Orson Welles, Joseph Cotton - A story is based on the life of William Randolph Hearst. Because of its popularity as an art film many people have trouble just watching it as the story. Watch it to find out what is meant by Rosebud.
Best of the best.......2002-10-13
These are some of the best of the best movies ever made.
I don't have money to burn..........2002-09-13
Personally I didn't need all the movies in here, but I bought it anyway... Listen to me... buy just the movies you want, seperatly.
Can't understand these sets.......2002-07-16
I can't understand why anyone would purchase a set like this. If you buy all the included DVD's individually, not only will you still get free shipping, but it's actually [$$] cheaper. I think these movies are some of the best ever committed to celluloid, I encourage every motion picture fan to own these films, but I just think it's silly to purchase them in this way.

Essential Viewing.......2004-11-01
Without a doubt these DVD,s (great transfers)show two of the greatest actresses we have known portraying characters that are still common place today despite the movies being termed as ""old fashioned" etc. I viewed them at the one sitting and thought back to the good old days of double features and afterwards came away impressed and wondering why filmakers nowadays cannot make simple dramas like they used to. People argue that 1997,s Titanic was a great love story,I beg to differ,it was poor in comparison to the 1940,s love stories which set a trend. Bette and Joan I salute you both, fantastic actresses
