Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Life among the Bloomsbury group in post-Victorian England, as seen through the relationship between writer Lytton Strachey (Jonathan Pryce in a well-wrought, if mannered performance) and painter Dora Carrington (Emma Thompson). Carrington won't give herself to any of the men in her life (including her husband)--at least not emotionally. Instead, this woman has found her soulmate in Strachey, a homosexual who, in fact, has a crush on Carrington's husband. They try to maintain a friendship outside their various romantic liaisons but keep winding up with each other. Still, despite an intriguing performance by Pryce and a cooler, less accessible one by Thompson, this film never quite takes off. Once you get the point--that this is a love that will never be consummated--you begin to wonder if, in fact, there is a larger point to be had. There isn't. --Marshall Fine

Gross Genius!.......2007-06-23
I saw this movie long ago. As a kid, I was grossed out by it (hence the whole reason for viewing this movie) but when I viewed it as an adult, I was in stitches.
As an educator, I felt that there was a useful message woven into this movie. If gone array, children can go astray. They act out, disobey and may do down-right dangerous things. Yet with a little love and guidance, they are capable of doing the right things.
Children will get a kick out of these gross, vile "kids" and parents might appreciate knowing that no matter how much their kids may act out sometimes, at least they're not "The Garbage Pail Kids"!

what can i say about this one... just a classic movie from the past. not many people know about it, but when they see it they love it!

A classic from my childhood. GPK mania at its peak........2006-12-09
I highly enjoyed garbage pail kids as a kid, and actually have 4th series to 16th series complete sets that I collected when they came out. This movie was not an acadamy award winner, but it is a classic. They draw from the 1st-5th series cards for the movie characters. Just a funny movie. A must get for GPK collectors. Check out the Cartoon series as well, I just ordered it.
G.P.K Ruless!!!!!!.......2006-11-23
This movie is awesome, is one low budget picture, but well done and funny, sometimes a little cheesy but is for kids a think so. by the way Katie Barberi is a fox in this movie. wowww

Blu-Ray in America, HD-DVD in Europe!!!.......2007-07-01
Arnie is Doug Quaid, a simple construction worker who is bored with his uneventful life and wishes to be more and to do something meaningful. He's fascinated with going to Mars and meeting the mysterious woman of his dreams (that would be Melina) despite the civil war brewing withing the colonies. His wife Lori (Sharon Stone, looking gorgeous) is appalled with all things Martian and quickly nixes that idea. The only way Quaid is going to come close to the red planet is if he takes a Rekall vacation, a company that literally offers you a 'dream' vacation memory implant. Quaid wishes to go as a secret agent and all seems well until they send him to sleep.
As soon as he's unconscious Quaid seems to wake up in a rage, claiming his name is not Quaid but Hauser. And it's not just the dream going wrong since the Rekall technicians have not even implanted the dream yet. Blacking out again and waking up in a cab, Quaid has totally no recollection of anything that has happened and is confused to find his life turned upside down. His wife and colleagues are trying to kill him, dozens of armed henchmen are after him, he seems to have acquired lethal killing skills from nowhere and he apparently has some unfinished business back on Mars, despite the fact that he's never been there. Or has he?
Once on Mars for real (or is it?) he finds himself involved with the beautiful Melina (Rachel Ticotin, even prettier than Sharon Stone), the underground resistance and battling their arch-nemesis Vilos Cohaagen, a bureaucrat who has the entire planet under his control. It seems that Hauser was Cohaagen's right hand man and left clues for the fabricated Quaid persona to topple Cohaagen's regime.
Total Recall is certainly one of Arnie's and Verhoeven's most imaginative and creative movies. The Mars town of Venusville is basically Amsterdam's Red Light District with booze, drugs and sex everywhere, the violence is so ridiculously over-the-top that one cannot help but laugh at it (despite a lot of the gorier bits being censored by the evil MPAA), the vision of the future is incongruously bleak but colorful and fanciful yet primitive. The contrasts between Earth and Mars are similar to Western and Third World comparisons.
The visual effects, if slightly dated, are simply amazing. Jerry Goldsmith's awesome score is, at once, atmospheric and action-packed. The set-pieces, especially Quaids vision of the alien furnaces, are just ludicrously entertaining and the 'is it a dream or is it real' premise puts such a wonderfully surreal twist on the whole thing. Sci-Fi has never been so outrageous. What do you expect with mad genius Dutchman directing? And I do believe that it IS real.
The HD-DVD may be missing any extras but the film looks absolutely gorgeous in 1080p and is surely one of the best-looking HD-DVDs I have seen so far. Very, very impressed indeed. Highly recommended.
Blu-ray brings a classic back to life.......2007-06-12
For those who complain about the quality, I don't know what kind of equipment they were watching this on, but I've seen my fair share of blu-ray movies and this one was right up there.
Clear colors and nice sound - we had a blast reliving this movie from the past. I highly recommend it!
Disappointing Transfer .......2007-02-15
I Love Total Recall as a movie hence the reason I've bought it for a 3rd time, after VHS and DVD. I must say I was very disappointed with this transfer, why when films can be cleaned up prior to transfer do they make us buy such a crap transfer!? I mean I bought the Rambo1 Blu Ray from Lionsgate/ Studio Canal which is now 25 years and that is a superb transfer, even the French HD of Basic Instinct is a Cracking transfer by Studio Canal, In Comparison Total Recall is a let down, and to be honest when we fork out our hard earned cash for movies we love on HD formats we expect a marked improvement, why should we make excuses that this film is old, what 1990 is old! When film companys that do spend the money get results, have you seen the Bond Remasters on DVD, some of these are over 40 years old and look better then ever (cant wait for the blu rays of them!) Overall Buy this if you must have it, but be prepared for a let down visually!
HD-DVD Total Recall Review, AUSTRALIA RELEASE!!!.......2007-02-10
Totall Recall is distributed by Universal and Studio Canal in Australia, which means we get Total Recall released here on HD-DVD, not Blu-ray. This also means they'll be releasing Terminator 2 (Theatrical) here aswell.
Totall Recall on HD-DVD, fairs up pretty nicely.
Video: 3.5/5
Picture Quality is great, with sharpness and clarity on par with most HD-DVD releases. Grain is definatley present, but this is what's expected for such an old film. Comparing it to the previous Special Edition DVD, the HD-DVD is a HUGE STEP UP. Also, this HD-DVD's colour has noticeably been PUMPED UP in SATURATION, which is a very nice edition (Mars has never looked so pretty). I also read that it is a much better transfer than the Blu-ray release.
Sound: 3.5/5
We get a DTS-HD master here, and it sounds great. Although, it's hard to judge when I haven't got an AMP that fully supports lossless audio, but what i heard on the down conversion is great.
Special Features: 0/5
We get nothing here, NOTHING!! Studio Canal have to do much better than this.
Overall: 3.5/5
Whilst no Special features, Total Recall is still worth the purchase. it's such a classic Arnie action flick, every fan should own either the HD-DVD or Blu-ray version.

Mark Medoff's tough play about deafness is sweetened and softened in this 1986 film adaptation directed by Randa Haines (Wrestling Ernest Hemingway). William Hurt plays a teacher newly hired at a school for deaf children, and Marlee Matlin is the deaf and withdrawn janitor who captures his attention. Romantic and heartfelt, the film makes its audience care very much about its two leading characters, and wince when Hurt's well-meaning instructor allows Matlin's handicap to become a problem. Haines develops some interesting visual ideas to underscore the isolation of Matlin's world, particularly a lovely refrain that finds Matlin swimming alone at night. The drama is cut somewhat by the bouncy energy and good humor of Hurt's students. Piper Laurie is very good in a supporting role as Matlin's mother. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
A good plot ruined..........2006-09-26
This is a good movie, but could be better.
1) Having a "R" rating kind of limits the audience base. It could have reached more people if it was PG 13 instead. Maybe even PG. Maybe more people would watch it, like it, and discuss it if it wasn't necessary to rate it so strongly.
2) Is all the sex so necessary to the plot? No. It was embarrasing, to say the least. And their love would still be as strong if they restrained their passions until they were married.
3) The sex weakens the plot in another aspect. If Sarah hated her childhood, hated being known as promiscuious by every single boy in her neighborhood, you'd think she continue to distance herself from her mistakes, and make him wait until they were married. That would show that he loved her and cared for her so much he wouldn't mind waiting.
4)Yes, I can see the humor in having a deaf kid want to learn to speak so he can swear at people, but is it so necessary, I have to ask?
I hope somebody remakes the movie with these points in mind, enabling a greater audience to be exposed (to the ideas, not to the...you know...) to the deaf community.
James and Sarah's Story.......2006-08-15
Hollywood has often visited the story of the teacher who comes to make a difference. There have been some fine films born from that premise but Children of a Lesser God gets my vote as the really interesting one.
William Hurt's James is an offering that has a real feel to it. He has wandered through some of his earlier days, drifting and learning through a variety of different disciplines and jobs (as principal Bosco points out to him while he is interviewing Hurt). He is cocky, passionate and searching but there is also the hint of arrogance in his motivations. William Hurt has never been better and he delivers a subtle, intense and yet a kind performance.
Marlee Matlin's Sarah is equally as compelling and her portrayal- explosive and needing at every turn. No wonder she won the award for this work. She conveys the frustration this character feels with a precise on target delivery.
What makes this story interesting is that it is the story of a teacher who reaches into himself, reaches into a quiet that has robbed a group of students of their ability to actively participate, and reaches into the life of a young woman who has imprisoned herself in her own frustration and anger. All are changed by the results and in a very real, positive and life renewing way.
Randa Haines direction is restrained, inspired and poetic and the film plays like a glimpse into someone's life. It's a beautiful thing to watch and to learn something from. And while I've said it's a story of a teacher who has come to make a difference, it is also a very tender and moving story of love. Love between James and Sarah, between James and his students and between the small community that is depicted here.
Special mention to of Piper Laurie and Philip Bosco's work here as the mother and the principal. They are two extremely fine character actors whose work (as always) is nothing short of a joy to watch. They lend the more sage advice that rounds this story's points out to have some real weight.
If you're looking for a film that lends its love on several levels, this is the one for you.
Incredible.......2006-08-06
This is one of the best movies ever made that looks at a culture that still has not been touched upon by the media.
CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD.......2006-07-05
NOT SINCE THE STORY OF HELEN KELLER HAS THERE BEEN SUCH A SENSITIVE MOVIE ABOUT A HANDICAPPED PERSON. MARLEE MATLIN AND WILLIAM HURT ARE EXCELLENT, THE SCRIPT IS GREAT AND THE PRODUCTION VALUES LEAVE NOTHING TO DESIRE.
5 questions you might be asking.......2006-07-04
If you are reading this review, chances are you saw this movie many years ago and you might be asking yourself:
1) Does William Hurt talk unusually slow in this film, like he does in all of his films? Yes
2) Was this film like an afterschool special, filled with overwrought acting and obvious advice? No
3) Will the women have 80s big hair and be wearing shoulder pads? Quite possibly
4) Do I remember correctly that William Hurt's character speaks both the female and male dialogue in most of the key scenes? Oddly, yes. But we forgive it, because it is a necessary device.
5) Why is this film popping up in my subconscious, and why am I asking myself if I should watch it again? Because the film is better than you remember, and the ideas it discusses are still applicable to your conflicts today.
If you haven't watched the movie recently, I recommend watching it again. It is as strong as it was 20 years ago.

Dorothy Dandridge was a Hollywood trailblazer. A confident sex symbol in the 1950s, she was the first black woman ever nominated for a Best Actress Oscar, but the electrifying stage chanteuse and dancer was forbidden to even enter the nightclubs and show rooms she performed in except from the stage. As portrayed by Halle Berry, who shepherded Dandridge's story to the screen, Dandridge is a sure, insistent star who battled racist studios and Jim Crow laws to maintain her dignity in public while stumbling through a private life marked by bad relationships and abusive lovers. Berry gives her best performance to date, brimming with ambition and moxie offstage, charming audiences with the slinky, sure moves of a nightclub veteran onstage, and convincingly "becoming" Dandridge in dramatic re-creations from Carmen Jones and Porgy and Bess. Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation) is sweet and sympathetic as her supportive, lovesick manager, and Klaus Maria Brandauer is, in Dandridge's words, a "big old bulldog" as director Otto Preminger. Director Martha Coolidge balances private troubles with professional milestones and setbacks and pulls no punches showing the institutional racism of late 1950s Las Vegas or the brutality of a vicious alcoholic husband. Originally made for HBO, this drama lacks the big-budget spectacle of traditional Hollywood biographies but offers in its place sharp writing, intelligent direction, and strong, sensitive performances. --Sean Axmaker
Description
An acclaimed stage performer, Dorothy struggled with the challenge of her color in Hollywood. She beat out many more famous rivals for the role of ' 'Carmen Jones' ', and became the first black woman ever nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award (R). Seductive and easily seduced, she was born to be a star. Here was a woman who wouldn't wait in the wings.

The portrait of a lady--sensitive, realistic and engaging.......2007-06-17
Introducing Dorothy Dandridge tells the story of how Dorothy Dandridge rose to fame despite racism against African Americans in 1950s America. Amazon correctly notes that the film doesn't shy away from the uglier realities that Dandridge had to endure. We see Dorothy having to use a cup to urinate in instead of using the bathroom that was only for whites; and Dorothy watches as people scour the pool at The New Frontier Hotel in Vegas after she merely splashed her foot in the water. We also get insight into how Dorothy was pushed around by Hollywood executives who wanted her to play comparatively small parts like the role of Tuptim in The King and I after starring in Carmen Jones.
Halle Berry portrays Dorothy Dandridge with a sensitivity that you can easily appreciate. The victimization Dandridge suffers while living with her mother and her mother's apparent girlfriend is very starkly portrayed without any attempt to water it down; and you find yourself empathizing with her character Dorothy pretty quickly after the movie starts. Halle Berry practically throws herself into the starring role of Dorothy with passion and energy that would make Dorothy proud and grateful if she were still with us today to view this movie. Berry's portrayal of Dorothy's pain and deep angst when she must confront the fact that her only daughter with Harold Nicholas, her first husband, is profoundly brain damaged convinces you that Berry feels everything Dorothy experienced when Dorothy herself had to take the bad news. We see Halle Berry acting convincingly throughout the rest of the picture, too--overjoyed with her love affair with Otto Preminger, crushed when he leaves her twisting in the wind. We see Halle Berry showing us both sides of Dorothy Dandridge--the fiery, brave and amorous side and the vulnerable side of her as well.
The supporting cast turns in marvelous performances also. Look for Obba Babatunde to play the role of Harold Nicholas, Dandridge's first husband who cannot be the family man she truly wants him to be although he tries; and Klaus Maria Brandauer is well cast at director Otto Preminger. Brandauer portrays Preminger as a cold, calculating man who wants what he wants when he wants it--and then throws Dandridge's love for him away as soon as he no longer wants it anymore. In addition, Brent Spiner does a great job playing the role of the faithful, loyal manager who tries to guide and protect Dandridge during her tumultuous career and personal ups and downs.
The cinematography reflects great judgment; the camera moves at all the right angles to capture the action and mood of every scene. The choreography works well, especially in crowd scenes including Dandridge's first appearance at Ciro's nightclub. In addition, the scenes that display domestic violence reflect a great deal of forethought and good judgment to make the action have just the right effect on the viewer. Excellent!
The DVD comes with few extras: I disliked the advertisement "extra" which basically just tries to get you to buy more DVDs. The brief biographies of the real life cast members were good but I would have appreciated some commentary by director Martha Coolidge or the cast members.
Introducing Dorothy Dandridge does more than merely accomplish the goal of telling us the story of Dorothy's roller coaster career and personal life. This is an insightful portrait of a lady whose life story is full of sad and poignant moments interspersed with professional triumphs and happiness. Do yourself a favor and get this movie on DVD--you won't be disappointed in the slightest.
We Cannot Forget The Past .......2007-02-28
All that needs to be stated about Halle Berry's stunning portrayal of Dorothy Dandridge is she won Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Emmy awards for the HBO drama.
In this era where Hollywood is celebrating diversity in movies, we cannot forget the time not that long ago when black performers suffered mightily from closed doors in the front of studios & maybe having a fleeting opportunity through a rear door that was opened just slightly.
Dandridge was the first black woman nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actress category for her 1954 performance in Carmen Jones. But Jim Crow pursued her through a tumultuous life that ended with her tragic accidental death or suicide by prescription drugs at the age of 42 in 1965.
Perhaps because it was a movie destined for cable, the script powerfully addresses the racism faced by Dandridge in Hollywood and Las Vegas. In one moving scene, a Las Vegas hotel drains and scrubs a pool after Dandridge placed her foot in the water.
Berry is magnificent as she balances the triumphs of Dandridge as an actress & nightclub performer with a private life marred by physically-abusive lovers, an alcoholic husband who left her virtually penniless and an ongoing affair with director Otto Preminger, who seemingly showed his real feelings by not attending her funeral.
The movie is Berry at a pinnacle artistically and obviously committed to capturing the essence of Dandridge. And it again brings out an important point that to truly move forward as a society, we cannot forget the past.
get rid of sub-titles.......2007-01-23
The only thing I didn't like was when the DVD is first starting the sub-titles have to be turned off every time the DVD is played
tragic.......2006-10-16
That's just goes to show you how Black people got treated back in the day.Halle Berry protrayed her well. I see why she got the Golden Globe for her protrayal of Dorothy Dandridge. Ms. Dandridge would be proud had she lived to see it.
Berry does a bang-up job!.......2006-08-05
This docu-drama is one of the best of its genres. Halle Berry does justice to the great Dorothy Dandridge, and the tale of her life (both before, during and after Hollywood) is heartbreaking. The only problem I have with this DVD is a technical one - the sound seems to be out-of-balance, with background noise often overpowering the dialogue.

Inspired casting puts sparks in this comedy of counterculture clash between an aging 1960s radical and a buttoned-down FBI agent. Dennis Hopper plays an Abbie Hoffman-esque sixties activist and prankster who lands in the custody of a conservative young agent (a suitably uptight Kiefer Sutherland) and proceeds to literally unravel the agent's carefully constructed front through a series of slippery mind games. Hopper has a blast as the unreformed sixties relic, and Carol Kane is delightful as a hippie holdout who puts both men back in touch with their identities. There are few surprises, plenty of heart, and even a little sentiment in this story of rebellion and the legacy of the counterculture. The soundtrack is gilded with well-chosen 1960s anthems. --Sean Axmaker

Unexpexted turns of the characters.......2007-03-28
Very human and a look back to the ideals of the sixties- at least those of the hippies and how their children experienced them
A movie to go back to.......2006-04-02
This came out when I was 3, and Mom and I still have the laserdisc version of it. This movie is a great showing about how things have changed, if what Mom says about the 60's and 70's is true. Either way, it's a very fun movie. I feel the urge to watch it at least once a year. Keifer Sutherland plays a "me generation" FBI agent who is sent to take an ex-yippie, played by Dennis Hopper, to a prison where he can serve his sentence for disconnecting Spiro Agnew's train car. The cop and the ex-yippie end up having to flee for their lives and depend on each other for their survival, even if they drive each other crazy. In the end, the cop decides to let the ex-yippie run away. The sort of twist at the very end is nice, and I smile and chuckle thinking about it. I highly recommend it to anyone born in the late 80's who feels like they should have been in college in the 60's.
A bitter innovative comedy!.......2005-04-10
Two opposites gazes. One of them is the counterculture embodied by a man literally inmersed in his own universe of the sixties. He lives in the time tunnel: in the other hand a special agent extremely conservative and following every line of the established codes. This agent will have to make a unforgettable ride through a train from to other state. And then a funny chain of smart and laughable events will fill the screen.Highly inspired and intelligent comedy that presents to Dennis Hopper as he wolud have got out from Easy rider twenty years later.
A tour de force comedy with many, many highlights. Recommendable all the way. Hopper and Shuterland made a maginficent team!
Flashback.. fun.. and there's a heart........2004-08-25
While looking at the box art.. or maybe just reading on the box.. You may think this film is your stanard opposites clash, then become buddies film.. Well, you'd be right.. and, you would be WRONG. I admit, there are a few contrived scenes.. and the relationship is pretty much spelled out from the beginning of the film and the two main character's FIRST meeting.. BUT, the way it's played is definitely not the same old formula.
Dennis Hopper easily slips into the aging hippie radical.. It's no surprise that he's comic gold. The more surprising part, and it is no knock against him, is Keifer Sutherland. He plays the straight man to the crazy radical, yet also brings an unexpected depth to the character of the FBI agent who's responsibility it is to take Huey (Hopper) back to jail.
Not saying Hopper's character lacks depth.. He is very much a cardboard cut out loudmouth that also has a depth to him when he refers to his regret of having been a fugitive for 25 years after pulling off an amateurish stunt against the establishment.
BUT.. the real surprise to me is still of course Sutherland.. in retrospect.. looking over his career, even up to this point, his most effective roles (and even now, on the big screen anyway) had been of villains and people who are evil.. pure and simple, and without reason for the most part. His character of the sadistic Ace Merill (Stand by Me) was a great role.. but rather just an evil role.. but, of course, Sutherland never let his evil turn into the level of mustache twirling.. He was the bully.. Or his later turns in the small parts in "A Time to Kill" and almost invisible (a completely omniscient and almost spectrual figure, well voice, in "Phone Booth". Here he plays the straight man.. An uptight FBI agent who triest to resist the humor and charm of the aging hipster..
And he seems to have a rather good time playing the almost lack of humor FBI agent.. then he gets his chance as the antagonistic prankster.. But, the most shocking.. Were two particular scenes between Buckner and Carol Kane regarding his childhood.. When he talks about going to school for the first time.. The second was just one simple moment where his character was totally changed.. I am assuming everyone has seen the film and know to what I refer here. As Buckner (Sutherland) watches a family video, watch Sutherland's reaction.. As his character totally breaks down..
Anyway.. I can only recommend this film to anyone.. who doesn't mind the language.. It is definitely a film for ADULTS.. but there are messages for the younger generations as well. So.. it's a buddy film.. there are opposing idealogies.. there's some character depth.. and a satisfying conclusion.. You will laugh, maybe cry.. and hopefully think about the generation that was and what it means to us now and how it may be important now than ever.
I may be young, but I've got good tastes........2003-10-08
This is the movie that made me a huge Kiefer Sutherland fan. I saw it when I was young (age 12 or so) and it's been one my absolute favorites ever since. A lot of talent and heart went into this film and it always puts me in a good mood. Dennis Hopper is awesome as always and he and Kiefer made a great screen team. A must see, especially for any Kiefer fans out there. I'm so excited to finally have this movie in my film library.

Destined to become a holiday perennial, The Polar Express also heralded a brave new world of all-digital filmmaking. Critics and audiences were divided between those who hailed it as an instant classic that captures the visual splendor and evocative innocence of Chris Van Allsburg's popular children's book, and those who felt that the innovative use of "performance capture"--to accurately translate live performances into all-digital characters--was an eerie and not-quite-lifelike distraction from the story's epic-scale North Pole adventure. In any case it's a benign, kind-hearted celebration of the yuletide spirit, especially for kids who have almost grown out of their need to believe in Santa Claus. Tom Hanks is the nominal "star" who performs five different computer-generated characters, but it's the visuals that steal this show, as director Robert Zemeckis indulges his tireless pursuit of technological innovation. No matter how you respond to the many wonders on display, it's clear that The Polar Express represents a significant milestone in the digital revolution of cinema. If it also fills you with the joy of Christmas (in spite of its Nuremberg-like rally of frantic elves), so much the better. --Jeff Shannon
DVD features
The most intriguing feature on the two-disc DVD is probably the six-minute sequence featuring a new song performed by the two engine-room characters, Smokey and Steamer. The animation is crude and the song is nothing special, but it does preserve the dual performances of Michael Jeter (he played both characters), who passed away during filming. One of the striking aspects of The Polar Express is its use of motion-capture technology to turn real actors into animated characters, and that is examined in a significant portion of the five-part 11-minute featurette, in the "look at" Tom Hanks's multiple performances, and in an Easter egg that offers a side-by-side comparison of the actors in their motion-capture suits with the finished film in the "Hot Chocolate" number. There's also a live performance of Josh Groban singing "Believe" followed by an interview segment with him and composer Alan Silvestri, author Chris Van Allsburg providing a five-minute capsulization of his career, a PC game demo, and a kids' set-top game. The version of the film on DVD is the standard theatrical version, not the 3-D version seen in IMAX theaters. --David Horiuchi

A magical movie.......2007-06-26
If there's such a thing as magic this movie is it. Lots of cool racing scenes and good interaction with adults and the kids in this movie. Though I don't believe in Santa I do recommend seeing this movie. Your children will love it, mine did!
A New Christmas Tradition.......2007-06-20
My children loved this book. My favorite moments during the holidays revolve around having my grandchildren--sitting on my lap and surrounding me--watch this DVD with me. I turn up the sound so that the appearance of the train at the beginning of the film rattles the plates in the cabinet in the kitchen. This film is one of my favorite films. And it's one my grandchildren love too, both at Christmas and sometimes early to late in July when the little ones begin to think about the hope for snow and presents.
it must be christmas.......2007-06-08
wonderful dvd and a great classic to have on hand for the young and young at heart
Best of all times!.......2007-05-14
This is one of my all time favorit movies. Great for kids of all ages(1 to 99years old). Purchased this one for a birthday gift for a 3 year old. His mother says that he watched it so much that they put it up so he will enjoy it again for Christmas. A wonderfull movie that will make everyone believe!
Timeless Classic.......2007-05-13
We already purchased the DVD when it was first released. Now that I have an HD DVD, I was surprised to learn that The Polar Express was also available in that format. Therefore this was the very first HD DVD that I ever bought. I'll comment on both the HD version and the regular version.
I played the DVD over last Thanksgiving when my parents came to visit. I grew up in the 50's and 60's. My dad said that it really put you into the Christmas spirit. This movie will go down as a Christmas classic. How many times have my family watched this since it was first released? Don't ask. I lost count.

Customer Reviews:
Well written and well acted........2007-04-04
This is a beautifully morose story of painter Dora Carrington; her work, her life, and the love of her life, author Lytton Strachey, who also happens to be homosexual. It is set in World War One England, and it looks as though the film itself could be a work of art. Carrington is full of saturated green landscapes and poetic dialog. Though a bit of a "downer", still worth a box of Kleenex and a month's prescription of Prozac.
A surprising look inside the nature of Love.......2006-03-12
'Carrington' belongs to the category of films that are obscure and eccentric, released in small art houses and that most people have never heard of. What a pity. This film presents an alternative twist on the theme of love, interweaving the ever-changing and amorphous desires of people and giving an honest portrayal of the ambiguous sexuality many people feel.
Jonathan Pryce and Emma Thompson team up in an on-screen romance that is both tragic and fulfilling. Lytton Strachey, cold, wise, and homosexual meets promising painter Dora Carrington. She insists on being called by her surname and is even mistaken for a boy by Lytton when he first sees her. Carrington is still a virgin and repels advances by men all the time, and it's driving her boyfriend Mark insane. In desperation, Mark begs that Lytton "work on her a bit". The relationship between Carrington and Lytton is untainted by lust, something Carrington has always objected to. She denies Mark sex because she fears that he will become only sexually interested in her.
Carrington, however, falls undeniably in love with Lytton, which is a slight inconvience considering the fact that he is gay. Still, they begin living together and spend some of the happiest years of their life. A touching moment occurs when Lytton asks Carrington, "Why are you so good to me?" and she replies by showing him the pen wiper which has the words "Use Me" on it. But alas, it must end in tragedy. The parting shot (and sound) of the film is so poignant that it left tears in my eyes.
Emma Thompson carries this film entirely on her shoulders. If not for her performance, this film would not be half as enjoyable. Just watching this woman in front of the camera is absolutely fascinating. Combine that with the idiosyncratic Jonathan Pryce and a wonderful supporting cast and the mixture is very much appropriately off-beat and quirky.
Definitely recommended and a must-see for Emma thompson fans.
A unique relationship between two extraordinary individuals .......2006-02-22
It's an odd thing when a film is perfectly cast, painstakingly researched, extraordinarily well-written, and wonderfully acted, that still it should feel a bit lifeless, stolid and conventional, completely unlike the characters it's illuminating. Look-alike Jonathan Pryce as the homosexual Lytton Strachey and the always remarkable Emma Thompson as the passionately heterosexual (Dora) Carrington act their hearts out, bringing vividly and with complete believability to life one of the oddest couples in recent history, but while Christopher Hampton has made his reputation on excellent writing such as we see here, his direction is leaden, and the film is interesting more for the work of the actors and the real people they play, rather than from any great feat of filmmaking. Sadly, not many people saw the film in the theatres despite the achievements of the cast.
Dora Carrington, though a painter of note, was most famous for her life-long, rather self-abasing devotion to Lytton Strachey, the writer of a number of essays and criticisms, who later published a witty expose of four "Eminent Victorians," which was subersive and significant, both literarily and financially. But like many of the Bloomsbury set to which he and Carrington more or less belonged, he was arguably more remarkable for his eccentricity, wit, and whimsical personality than for a rather slender body of brilliant writing. Pryce's portrayal of him is delightfully unrestrained and flamboyant--when he and Ottoline dance at a party, they are a pair of absurdist clowns, having a marvelous time with no concern for anyone else`s opinion. Carrington was his devoted and loving but non-sexual partner (she once described herself as his pen-wiper, there to serve him, asking nothing in return), and between them, at first through her selflessness, then through his own recognition of the rarity of this devotion, there grows a love deeper than most marriages. Sexual passion is something they both choose to deal with independently, and surrounding themselves with lovers who somehow also manage to (mostly) rise above sexual jealousy, they live happily together almost from initial meeting to their deaths.
Her early life gave no clue that she would become such a committed non-conformist. After her graduation from the Slade School of Fine Art in London and the winning of a number of prizes, she was considered a painter of great promise, and became indeed, a quite prolific and interesting painter, but one who never even sought to show her work, despite much interest. Instead she painted to satisfy herself and others, and filled her homes with countless paintings (most famously her portrait of Lytton), especially portraits of friends and lovers, as well as covering every wall and piece of furniture with glorious scenes, delighting everyone who visited.
The two were introduced by Virginia Woolf's sister, Vanessa Bell (Janet McTeer), while Carrington was visiting her and, dressed in men's clothing with her hair shorn in a Dutch boy's bob, she was mistaken by Lytton for a boy--his dismay at learning that the "lovely boy" romping with Nessa's sons is a young woman is amusing. At first Carrington detested him, but they spent a great deal of time with Lady Ottoline (so brutally lampooned by D. H. Lawrence in "Women in Love," she is treated here with great affection). The up-and-coming painter Mark Gertler (played by Rufus Sewell with his usual vigor and intensity), has enlisted Lytton's help in his quest to seduce the reluctant virgin he has spent four years pursuing, so the two are much thrown together and soon discover that they are born soul mates, feeling a great ease and openness with one another.
Eventually they decided to live together, with Carrington doing all the work to transform their first small house into a magical realm, while Lytton supported them with his earnings from the sudden, unexpected success of "Eminent Victorians." They lived in perfect harmony, despite the fact that her physical passion for this man had to be diverted into relationships with other men. She married a man with whom Lytton was more in love than she, and though Rafe Partridge (Steven Waddington) did not requite Lytton's physical passion, he became a steady third in their lives with all three eventually owning their most famous home, Ham Spray House, together. Eventually a fourth was added to the family, when Rafe fell in love with another woman, Frances (Alex Kingston), who managed to fit herself into the household, too (after Carrington`s death, they married). Throughout their years together, both Lytton and Carrington had many lovers, most of whom remained constants in their lives. Several were with him when he died of a sudden and fatal illness, which devastated Carrington. Though stories of her un-witnessed end vary, due to the need of others to try to protect her reputation, what we see in the film is accurate in itself--what happened over the next couple of days is the time about which there are several accounts.
Carrington's generous and loyal nature endeared her to everyone she knew, and she and Lytton were a happy if unusual couple. Thompson plays her with intelligence and a sort of glowing health and energy that seduces us; she lights up the screen, and despite the boyish dress and early gracelessness, her face is as clear and lovely as the summer sky and she utterly convinces us of Carrington's irresistible charm--that many men desired and loved her is hardly surprising. Just as Lytton's fragile frame and effeminate gestures would, in one less brilliant and magnetic, become difficult to live with, his kindness and humor more than make up for any of the extra work others have to do in order to ensure his comfort and security. Even the extra manly Rafe is tolerant of Lytton's slightly silly ways. They all work hard--he is the delicate and difficult center of everyone's world, at least externally, but as we get deeper into the relationship, we see that without Carrington, he might very well have been lost to ill-health and a tendency to melancholia--she may appear to be the satellite revolving him, but a greater insight reveals that she is the solid rock upon whose stability he is entirely reliant.
The film does capture the feeling of camaraderie that the Bloomsbury artists shared, their refusal to participate in the horrors of World War I, their solidarity despite the constant intrigues and affairs, and gives us some insight into the process of making art, of being artists unafraid to live outside the constraints of society. But most of all, Hampton, Thompson, and Pryce seem to really understand this unique relationship that ran so deep--the two loved and understood one another to a degree rare in life, and they seemed to be aware of this great gift, treasuring it and keeping it strong. Between them there were no secrets, and while Carrington would have loved Lytton as a woman loves a man, she accepted that this wasn't possible, and poured all her passion for him into being his mother, his sister, his dearest friend, his truest companion. Lytton repaid her devotion equally, and allowed her to build around him a real family which supported and loved him, despite his naturally solitary nature.
The cast, the delightful décor of the homes Carrington made chiefly for Lytton`s comfort, the beauty of Carrington's paintings (please be sure to sit through the end titles, when her paintings are displayed side by side with the credits), are the principle reasons to watch this film which is worth owning, as you'll enjoy it more than once, especially if you're an artist yourself. Even if you're not, you may find yourself wanting to grab a brush and turn an old table into a work of art. Despite Hampton's flawed direction, these two people who fashioned a deeply meaningful relationship despite what most would consider built-in "limitations," are fully brought to life by Emma Thompson in the title role, with Jonathan Pryce firmly by her side, as solid and fascinating as Carrington and Lytton. On the cover of a biography of Carrington is a picture of the two together, outside of Ham Spray House; Thompson's glowing smile and Pryce's dandyish pose are perfect. So perfect are they, that only after I opened the book and read that it was a photo, not of the actors, but of Carrington and Lytton themselves, did I realize how perfectly captured they'd been. I think they would have been pleased to see themselves in this film.
The Strange Course of True Love.......2006-01-21
At first the temptation is to see the movie's focus on Carrington's life as a clever ploy to do a biography of her lover, the far more famous Lytton Strachey, but in the end, the movie is really about Carrington.
Like Lytton, she is emotionally unusual. She waits until her mid-twenties to lose her virginity, and when she does, she finds she is subject to the unbridled passions of every lover who comes her way. Only Lytton, who is openly homosexual, cherishes her the way she wants to be cherished, in ways that leave her free to live her own life.
He is her ultimate love. She is his ultimate love. Neither ever fully engage that romanace and yet being afar seems to keep their love for each other real and close.
Carrington is less a movie about an eccentric homosexual writer than it is a movie about a radical feminist who dares to be her own person. She wants to be in charge of her own life, not the object of some one else's passion. In the same way, she wants to paint and create a total living environment through which she can control her world, she wants emotional control over herself.
Lytton lets her do that, because his writing consumes him, and all his boyish lovers are transitory. The amazing decorative arts effects she paints throughout their houses are reminiscent of the Bloomsbury Group in general, but, in the movie, they represent her will be be in charge of her environment. She has no desire to display her work or sell it. She paints her lovers' images to retain them as she remembers them -- without demanding control over them. Only Lytton gives her the same space.
In Lytton's oddly removed love, she finds the one true love that lets her be. While both Lytton and Carrington take other lovers, their relationship is the steadfast calm that guides both of them through storm tempests of hot passion elsewhere.
In the end, the movie Carrington is about Carrington. Anything you take away from the film about Lytton Strachey is truly just background.
good film, bad DVD.......2005-10-20
This film deserves a much better transfer to DVD. Sometimes washed out, and sometimes too contrasty, you will find image problems especially in the shadow areas where they turn a strong reddish hue. This is unfortunate since the cinematography is beautiful. This edition needs a major overhaul. If you are not bothered by technical quality, these details can be overlooked. Good film.

Amazon.com essential video
This science fiction blockbuster from 1990 began its production life as a very different movie than the one that was released. An adaptation of the Philip K. Dick short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," Total Recall was originally conceived of with Richard Dreyfuss starring as a Walter Mitty-like character who experiences a variety of artificially induced fantasies. The movie we know is a mega-budget action epic set on Mars. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a normal working man who discovers that his entire reality has been invented to conceal a plot of planetary domination. Oscar-winning special effects and violent action propel the twisting plot, in which Arnold manipulates his manipulators in a world of dazzling high technology. Director Paul Verhoeven (Robocop) indulges his usual penchant for gratuitous bloodshed, but the movie has enough cleverness to rise above its excesses. --Jeff Shannon

As I recall.......2007-03-08
Excellent film. The action in Schwarzenegger films is renowned. Often the writing, in the action films at least, is as well. This film ranks at the top! Truly a discussion film. Was it all a dream, did it really happen, What about the girl, the blue sky? There's plenty of evidence to support both sides of the discussion. Try it, you'll like it!! No discussion there.
A Great Science Fiction Mind Blowing Ride.......2007-03-04
I love this film and eventhough it's 17 years old I still think it's great fun. I mean what's more original than either taking a vacation to another planet for real or taking a trip there that's only real in your mind. Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as a man who's obsessed with going to Mars after a bunch of weird dreams he has of him there. His wife played by Sharon Stone "at her hottest, well next to Basic Instinct" is jealous since he's having dreams of another woman with him. He goes to a place called Recall that can send you to certain places in your mind with an implant that Arnold decides to go to anyway.
After he gets the implant he finds that he's not on Mars but that everyone is chasing him with guns...including his hot wife who claims she was never his wife and just playing the part. He learns that he was never who he thought he was and was really a bad guy who got his memory erased and filled in with false memories. But could it be that the implant never went wrong at Recall and that he's really just living out the fantasy of the implant. Since he did describe that he'd like the hot brunette from his dreams there and that he did ask to be a spy and well since he did wind up on Mars too.
We never really learn which makes this movie even more fun since I waited for years for a sequel with it all either turning out to be real or not real. But really this is a perfect film without ever finding out. It's like you're experiencing all the confusion that his character has and the film feels like one great Science Fiction nightmare come to life. It has realistic and fun effects and is just great to look at even 17 years later. There's just not many films that compare to the excitement and fun that Total Recall gives you. Some might consider it a classic if it wasn't a little too over the top violent though. But even with all the violence this is one hell of a fascinating movie.
Mind-blowing scifi action!.......2006-11-19
This is one of Schwarzenegger's best. He looks so energetic in this movie.
And Sharon Stone partners him very attractively. The movie will take you to Mars... It will have you thinking about what's real around you and what is just a dellusion... May be you too were a secret agent, but they erased your memory? This movie will help you to remember your dreams about beautiful space adventures.
The story is by the same writer Philip K. Dick, who created the story for "Bladerunner" as well. The original story for "Total Recall is titled "We can remember it for you wholesale".
The film setting is totally futuristic, with fantastic architecture and concept vehicles. Shootings, chasings, suspence, metro stations, hotels, videophones, Mars, the love town "Venusville" - you get all the features of a great movie. Don't hesitate, watch this movie now, if you haven't seen it already. You'll be glad you did!
Great movie, lots of twists........2006-09-16
Total recall is a great thriller! It has many twists and turns, and the acting is superb. Predator will always be Arnold's best movie, but Total Recall is in the top six. Please note that there are some very, very, disturbing images that will keep you awake for weeks!
Total Recall........2006-06-16
Need to see this movie.Rated R for persuive strong bloody violence, strong language, and some comic nudity.

An evil gang takes over an amusement park only to be foiled by three Ninja-trained brothers and a TV action star in this smartly paced (if by-the- numbers) kiddie action flick. Medusa (Loni Anderson) and Lothar (Jim Varney) head up the gang with ransom money and mayhem on their minds. But they don't count on the young Caucasian trio, taught by their inexplicably Asian grandfather, and Dave Dragon (Hulk Hogan), making a live appearance at the park. What follows is campy humor, lots of Karate-esque action and plenty of Home Alone-type boy vs. foolish bad guy high jinks. And girls aren't left out: the brothers' neighbor, a brainy techno girl, is on hand to hack into the computer to override the gang's murderous plans, while also providing 007-style gadgets for hand-to-hand combat. While there is plenty of gunplay in the 90- minute film, no one is killed or even significantly hurt, making it appropriate for ages 5 and older. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Classic Ninja Flick!.......2007-04-24
If there's one thing I learned over the years, it's that marketing doesn't lie, and this trend continues with the SMASH HIT movie 3 NINJAS - HIGH NOON ON MEGA MOUNTAIN. Just as the box says, THE KIDS WILL LOVE IT! First off, just look at the cast!! HULK HOGAN, LONI ANDERSON, and JIM VARNEY all one one screen together? HOLY SMOKES!!!! I'm surprised they were able to get one of these NINJAS on screen much less ALL THREE IN THE SAME ACTION PACKED MOVIE!!!11 SOMEONE CALL IMAX!!!! However these NINJA masters were matched with a very talented director, Sean McNamara, who had recent successes with blockbusters like "THE LEGEND OF GALGAMETH". He really put this ALL STAR CAST through the paces and produced a movie that represents one of the best movies in the genre of NINJA movies, not to mention the CROWN JEWEL of their illustrious careers.
LONI ANDERSON playing MEDUSA made for a wonderful villain. Her continuing role as the NINJA master in hit series WKRP really translated well to the big screen, and I definitely would have been afraid to go to HIGH NOON ON MEGA MOUNTAIN if she had taken it over. I wasn't sure if HULK HOGAN was going to be up to saving MEGA MOUNTAIN or not with such a formidable opponent, but you'll have to get the movie yourself to see how it turns out.
If you're looking for one of the best NINJA movies ever with BONE CRUSHING ACTION, GLITZY MEGA STARS and HILARIOUS HIJINKS along the way, this is a movie the whole family will love. HEY MR AMAZON, WHY WON'T YOU LET ME GIVE THIS A 6/5 STARS??? As of this review there are only 4 in stock, so snatch this classic up WHILE YOU CAN!
SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST!!!.......2006-09-27
GET READY TO BE BLOWN AWAY! First, you get non-stop, crotch-knockin', light-up-the-eyes ninja action! Throw HULK HOGUN into the mix! That's right, I said HULK HOGUN! Then, bring Ernest into the picture! And mix it all up at MEGA FLIPPIN' MOUNTAIN!! MEGA MOUNTAIN! I used to love to go to mega mountain as a kid, and now we have a 3 NINJAS movie right there! What more could you ask for? This movie was dangerous! They had guns, and they were taking over the park, but guess who saved the day? NOt only the 3 NINJAS, but HULK HOGUN! You couldn't possibly get anything better in a movie! I was scurred, but I knew everything would turn out right with THE 3 NINJAS AND DAVE DRAGON! Nobody in their right mind would EVER mess with Dave Dragon. You'll get your eyes lighted-up! Then Tum Tum will rock your crotch! Watch out! GET THIS MOVIE!!
Less Fun Than An Inflamed Boil.......2006-08-14
I bought this film for a dollar with the intention of sending it to a friend who needed some "family" entertainment. Being a connoisseur of bad movies, though, my curiosity got the best of me and I had to preview it just to see Jim Varney as the villain, Lothar Zogg, which I admit is a great name. It is a sad day when Jim Varney is the best dramatic actor in a movie, even a kid's movie. (I would say this movie would be appropriate for ages six an up; the only violence is incessant karate.) This will definitely teach me not to watch kid's movies I bought as gifts.
Again, I repeat, Varney is by far the highlight of the film, although Hulk Hogan (as "Dave Dragon") tries his best to hang in there. The undisputed low point is Loni Anderson in a black leather outfit as the evil "Medusa." Her performance is not frightening, though her evident cosmetic surgery made me scream out loud.
The plot is that three kids, Colt, Rocky, and Tum Tum (really) learn to be ninjas from their grandpa, who uses a variety of teaching methods, most of which seem to involve toilet plungers. They defend Mega Mountain from terrorists led by the "Zogg and Medusa Moronic Criminals Corporation" (apparently) via endless action sequences and contrivances that James Bond wouldn't allow out of his tool shed, furnished by brainy techno-nerd, Amanda. Eventually the tension is resolved by the least believable plot device (hint: it involves compressed gases, a bomb, and a boat) in recent memory.
Watch especially for the scene with Jim Varney brandishing a saber, and the model helicopter ransom money interception collision ploy. I had thought of titling this review "Extortion on the Log Flume," but that really didn't convey the pain that this movie inflicts. In the end, though, I gave it two stars for a couple of reasons: first, the name Lothar Zogg really is a great villain name, and second, the movie is (after all) meant for kids, so I should give it some slack.
Although I revel in bad movies for their camp value, this one is probably good for young boys, and a chore worse than cleaning out the grease trap for just about everyone else.
They HAD to be High when they made this.......2006-02-24
dig this, yo brethrin, hold your hand limp, facing your left. then pound your chest like that saying repeatedly "I am Wee tod edd" then have someone watch you.
Charlie don't surf.......2005-09-15
If you had a diamond in one hand, and a copy of 3 Ninjas - High Noon on Mega Mountain in another, I'd pawn that diamond in order to buy more 3 Ninjas videos.
I have evaluated the martial arts in this movie. They are using a technique called Kun Chi Do perfectly. It's hard to appreciate this movie unless you are a martial arts fanatic. Those kids probably know enough Kun Chi Do to punch a man in the chest and make his torso explode, and then paint a fence. If you asked Frans if he'd walk down a dark alley with these kids hiding somewhere, I would say you're a silly head and then watch Jeopardy!. BUT THESE KIDS ARE VERY SKILLED.
