Description
Sam Elliot drew waves of accolades for his sensitive and sexy portrayal of aging lifeguard Rick Carlson, who's compelled to reassess his life and career as a professional lifeguard. To keep things status quo or pursue things status-conscious - that's Carlson's dilemma. It's an agonizing decision compounded on one side by an adoring beach groupie (Quinlan) and on the other by a former high school flame (Archer) that's game for rekindling, but only if he's serious about trading in his swimsuits for three-piece suits.

5 out of 5 stars real life in the 70's.......2007-03-16

I loved this movie. Even though its a small-time production, the writing was excellent, and very realistic. Music was memorable too. The dvd contains the whole movie with curse scenes and all the situations that were edited out for the tv version, scenes that would be considered politically incorrect today, but nonetheless are situations we all deal with in real life. This movie really brings you back to the 70's and how we grew up then. Sam Elliot is a perfect choice as lifeguard Rick, struggling with the peer pressure of getting a "real" job or doing what he really wants. This is one of my favorite films. Paul McMahon, my old roomate, you've got to get this.

5 out of 5 stars Lifeguard theme song,.......2006-07-24

The theme song is one of the best beach songs I have ever heard, and a 70's classic I think. But it's very rarely ever heard outside this movie. Paul Williams does have a cd with the song on it, but the song in the movie is performed by Dale Menten, and is very difficult to find.

5 out of 5 stars Life's conscious choices........2006-04-30

A long-awaited DVD choice, the launching of Sam Elliott, Kathleen Quinlan, Anne Archer and Parker Stevenson shin in one of the greatest B movies. On the surface, it anticipates "Jaws," yet was overshadowed by "Summer of '42." However, this "teen film" was very adult. Sam Elliott, as the inveterate lifeguard-jock, has the opportunity to move up or drift, sell-out or join. With all the temptations, he escapes with self-respect from tempting entanglements. His choices are contemporary, yet his decency and manliness do not go out with the tide at the finish. Anne Archer was never more lovelier as the sexy, vulnerable, willing single-mom.Kathleen Quinlan plays a perfect life-guard naive groupie to a tease. This is an unforgettable time capsule of the post-hippie,unhurried times. Peopld should see this film about individuals who thought about actions and weighed situations before committing themselves to regret, before cell phones and internet browsing. This is a movie that could beg for an equally mature follow-up. People forget "Last Summer," but are alwsys haunted by "Lifeguard."

4 out of 5 stars Life is a beach.......2005-12-03

This is a little movie that did. It was one of those films that everyone got their big break.

Sam Elliot plays lifelong lifeguard Rick. He's on the wrong side of 30 and still a lifeguard. But according to Rick, it's a job that has great environment, perks and the pay is not that bad.

Rick is at his midlife crisis and in comes an old high school pal who wanted to be a movie star, well now he runs a Porsche dealership. He wants Rick to come work for him. To add to this, he goes to his thirty year high school reunion. When he meets up with any of his old friends, he is embarrassed to tell them he is still a lifeguard. What complicates thing more is that his high school sweetheart is recently divorced. They reunite and things get intense. But she would rather have an affair with a Porsche salesman than a lifeguard.

While many of the actors had television exposure, this was the first big film most of the stars including Elliot, Anne Archer (as the sweetheart), Parker Stevenson (as a lifeguard trainee) and Kathleen Quinlan (as an underage groupie). While this film did not make stars out any of these actors but it gave them exposure. All showed that they had the potential.

4 out of 5 stars Baywatch with brains, and much more.......2005-07-04

It's amazing to me which films endure and which don't. After 40 years, "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" looks like a relic from another era, and it's considered an all-time classic. Yet 30 years after it's release, Daniel Petrie's minor 1976 film "Lifeguard" looks as good now as it did upon its release, and remains as timely and vital as ever, even though noone would consider it a classic of its era.

Actually, on the big screen, "Lifeguard" resembled a glorified TV movie. On TV, however, it looks great, especially in this wonderful widescreen transfer. And it serves as a reminder that sometimes small, heartfelt films with modest aspirations can endure and be effective long after the same era's pretentious and overblown message pictures. "Lifeguard" could be described as "Baywatch" with brains, but its much more than that. How wonderful it is to see a movie set in Southern California and on the beach where the beachgoers look like real people and not surgically-altered superbabes. And although all of the featured lifeguards are men, you get the idea if they hired a woman, she'd look like Alexandra Paul and not Pamela Anderson. Even the women star Sam Elliott gets involved with look like real, average women--future Oscar nominees Kathleen Quinlan and Anne Archer chief among them. Believe me, it's a real treat to watch normal people onscreen for a change.

Elliott stars as Rick, a career lifeguard who is beginning another summer on the beach, with a new assistant/trainee (Parker Stevenson). He befriends a lonely teenager (Quinlan) who has just moved to L.A. from San Diego (and who has an obvious crush on him), has a few one-night stands and meets his parents for dinner, whereas his father lets him know he's tired of his son wasting his life at the beach. This sends him into an early mid-life crisis, especially when an old high school friend who owns a Porsche dealership offers him a "respectable" job selling cars. But it's not until he attends his 15-year high school reunion and reunites with his divorced high school flame Cathy (Archer) that he begins to seriously consider hanging up his trunks for good, especially when Cathy lets him know her interest depends on it. So, obviously, Rick has some serious thinking to do: give up the job he loves for the respectability of a job he doesn't. It's a simple story, but as most simple stories do, it resonates still.

"Lifeguard" is a sweet, even funny movie that will obviously appeal to women, but is also a painless date film. The entire cast is good, with Elliott the obvious standout. Filmed before he matured into the grizzled, tough cop/cowboy/military type he now excels at, it's refreshing to see him play such a regular, flawed guy. My only problem with his character is that he is so level-headed, a decision he makes involving his relationship with Quinlan's character seems completely out of character and even more stupid than it is. Maybe it's because today's morality is so much different than it was then. Either way, it's a jolt. Also, Quinlan is typically wonderful, and Stevenson offers able support as the rookie and Rick's sounding board. Archer, although second-billed, doesn't make her entrance until the second half of the film and then has barely ten minutes screen time. She's professional as always.

The photography and look of the film still look great so many years later, with none of the swimwear or fashions seemingly out-of-date, compared to other eras. And, yes, the song "Time and Tide" by Paul Williams, which was cut out of the TV prints, makes a welcome return, as so many others have noted.

In all, **** (out of *****) for "Lifeguard". Unfortunately, this is a typical no-frills, no-extras presentation from Paramount DVD. But at least they continue to present these old gems in widescreen, so thanks for that.

Description

What gay man hasn't sat beside a pool and dreamed of declaring his love to a beautiful straight boy whose Speedo fits just right? How many of us have dared to hope that we might actually get to peel the swimsuit away, or that our love might even be returned? Well, for the irrepressible Martin, just dreaming and hoping are no longer enough. Martin falls for the straight Lucas the moment he sees him leap from the high dive, and decides to take a leap of his own. Within minutes he declares his love to Lucas, who is less than thrilled. No one is more surprised than Martin, then when his seemingly hopeless infatuation ends up bringing him friendship, passion and even true love. The only problem is that, for Martin, it all may have come too late. This tender story of two lovers who find the meaning of life just as one of them is preparing to leave it will both warm your heart and break it, and have you smiling through your tears. Throw in a mother who roars around town in a pink Mercedes with outfits to match, AIDS activists fighting for better treatments, a deaf drag queen who signs his routines instead of lip- synching, a gay wedding and beautiful locations in and around Marseilles, and you have a uniquely French but touchingly universal love story.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A French Love Story.......2007-05-07

In this bittersweet French film, gay boy (Martin) meets straight boy (Lucard),who cuts quite a figure in speedos, falls for him, and confesses his love immediately. Straight boy unfortunately has girl friend so the scene is set for a love triangle. But straight boy (Lucard) with not much coaching goes from straight to bi to gay (?) rather quickly.

The swimming pool scenes are lush as are some of the shots in the French countryside. Although the film is uneven, it certainly has its moments including a demonstration by the French Act-Up organization and a gay wedding orchestrated by Martin's mother, a French Auntie Mame who drives a lavender Mercedes. The film deals with the difficult subject of two lovers, one who is living and the other who is dying.

Another gay-themed film well worth seeing.

1 out of 5 stars A French "Love Story" Featuring A Romantic Lead Only A Masochist Could Love.......2007-02-28

I have to be frank, I'm quite surprised at how well received this small French film has been by many viewers. In no way do I wish to offend anyone--if you found something of value in this film, I'm pleased. However, having really looked forward to "The Man I Love," I recently sat down with a few friends to check out the DVD. This story of forbidden love and AIDS is supposed to be charming and moving, but unanimously--we found it annoying and preposterous. With a lead character so childish, so selfish, so petulant, so borderline obsessive, so disrespectful--let's just say, it's hard to root for this film as any kind of "love story." Instead, I just wished someone would slap this guy around until he had some sense.

OK, I know this sounds harsh--so let's get down to the facts of the matter. "The Man I Love" centers on an HIV+ man named Martin. Working at a local pool, he meets a new lifeguard named Lucas. Lucas, while attractive, is a monosyllabic jerk in this first meeting--he orders Martin around and barely contains a real indifference and disdain for his odd coworker. Guess what? Martin just eats this up--he pesters Lucas on the way home and proclaims his love (within minutes of the initial meeting) for the straight and horrified man who just wants to escape this creepy stalker. However, Martin ends up meeting Lucas's live-in girlfriend, and she is sweet, inviting, and genuinely fond of Martin--this ends up being the key to how Martin and Lucas start spending more time together. "Irrepressible" Martin starts to employ "charming," "hysterical," and "endearing" tactics to win Lucas's thawing heart--and the two, who have no common ground, start to grow close as Lucas realizes there might be an attraction. Knowing that this is both a "love story" and an AIDS drama, I'll leave the rest of the plot to your imagination.

I have nothing against the storyline of "The Man I Love," but it's not particularly unique. I have nothing against the actors. Lucas, his girlfriend, and Martin's mother all give solid performances--I was especially impressed with the actor who portrays Lucas. Having to perform the most difficult role, he must convince you to believe in some of the most outlandish scenarios. Being stalked, manipulated and molested by Martin--he still tries to sell that this is a "love story." That brings us to Martin. Oh, I get it. We are supposed to love Martin's free spirit, but there's a reason I've used quotes on the adjectives "irrepressible," "charming," and "endearing." That's how the movie expects us to view Martin's juvenile antics. But his complete disregard for everyone, but himself, is an enormous problem. Throwing dead fish in a public pool and terrorizing clients--"hysterically romantic!" (But we're supposed to view his boss as the villain for having a problem with these things.) He disregards Lucas's feelings constantly and is a monster to Lucas's girlfriend, someone who has specifically reached out to him in friendship. Martin is a truly awful human being who claims he doesn't want to be pitied for being ill, but uses it to manipulate everyone when it serves his purpose. It's offensive.

As you can see, I feel passionately about this misguided movie. Negative stereotypes abound, but again--this film has been embraced by many. If someone who is completely selfish and mean-spirited is an ideal romantic partner for you, then check this movie out and enjoy! For myself, however, I'll find love elsewhere. KGHarris, 02/07.

3 out of 5 stars Something amiss but still worth looking at.......2007-02-11

The Man I Love is an OK movie...it has some positive elements to it. The story follows Martin, who is HIV+. He meets Lucas, a lifeguard and diver at the pool where he works. Lucas is straight, or so the story goes, and living with Lise. Martin begins a quest, of sorts, to get Lucas into bed, and Lucas eventually realizes that he loves Martin and it goes on from there (don't want to spoil the ending). I think there are a lot of people, including myself, who can identify with the idea of loving someone who seems completely unavailable; Martin at least has the guts to go after him.

What I didn't like was the gigantic leap of feelings, from Martin to Lucas to Lucas to Martin. In the span of the first few minutes, we learn that Martin likes Lucas, a lot, but the movie gives the impression that it's a first meeting (love at first sight?). Lucas seems to struggle with his feelings for Martin but turns around and makes one gigantic leap into love. Another issue was the lack of clarity as to why Lucas loves Martin so much, besides the illness. I think the movie could have benefited from being longer so as not to obliterate a sense of realness for falling in love, especially with a character who is questioning as much as Lucas does.

What I did like is that Martin is not a completely sympathetic character. So many movies portray the dying as heroes. Martin doesn't take care of himself and he uses his illness to manipulate, something that many people with terminal illnesses do (been there, done that). I also loved the cinematography; it's absolutely gorgeous. Can't give this movie 4 stars but I like it well enough to recommend that you see it.

4 out of 5 stars Very engaging story.......2006-07-31

The two lead actors are fun to watch, interest, the story is intriguing, and the ending is appropriate. A very enjoyable movie.

    3 out of 5 stars 12 Days in OZ.......2007-01-19

12 Days of Terror: 5 out of 10: This is one strange film. A period piece Jaws taking place in Matawan NJ in 1916. (They actually do a nice job recreating the early nineteenth century Jersey shore line, except the boats are too modern.) I always have enjoyed a good (or even bad) shark attack movie. I always figured it was because of the fun munch the swimmer action. I never really thought about the T and A part of it. You know all those nice girls running around in their string bikinis or even less. Since 1916 female swimwear was apparently designed by the Taliban there is barely an ankle visible in the whole film. Funny how you don't miss the little things till they are gone.

Creating an even bigger quandary is the surprising over the top homoerotic overtones throughout the entire film. Seriously not since Jeepers Creepers 2 have I seen more shirtless boys making googly eyes at each other. The two leads Colin Egglesfield and Mark Dexter are supposed to be in a love triangle with Jenna Harrison but the way these two carry on with each other that poor girl doesn't have a chance no matter whom she chooses. It's like Brokeback Beach Bingo.

That aside this is Jaws by the numbers throwing out the actual historical facts and having our hero along with John Rhys-Davies (who apparently still will appear in any movie offered him.) go shark hunting with barrels and a crazy naturalist. (This along with the rundown ship having an inboard gasoline motor is needless to say ahistorical.) So if you like your Jaws slow paced, with a made for TV Merchant and Ivory feel and you prefer the first victim be a hunky guy in wet clingy cotton one-piece rather than a naked blonde girl. I have got your movie. I on the other hand am going to go watch a Ginger film to help clean my palate.

4 out of 5 stars A shark movie with class.......2006-11-24

Maybe it's because people seemed more dignified in the early 1900's, I'm not sure, I just enjoyed watching a shark film without the sterotypical cast, including the arrogant shark hunter, a bunch of foolish babes that get eaten, etc. etc. It made me think of A and E's (Arts and Entertainment) version of, 'The Great Gatsby,' in it's design. Overall one of the better shark films.

5 out of 5 stars expecting a cheesy B film but got more.......2006-07-19

When I rented this movie I was expecting another Shark Attack 1, 2 or 3 type movie, but this movie was better. The acting was good, the setting was excellent for the era and the low budget involved, and most importantly you didn't get those really fake (and funny) special effect shark attack scenes.

I started reading the book Close to Shore a few years ago which is about the same events of 1916. I am just not a reader, so when I saw this movie was available I immediately rented it and have watched it twice that is how much I enjoyed it.

If you like shark movies you won't be dissappointed in this movie, unless you like shark movies purely for the really bad special affects.

3 out of 5 stars Docu-drama that "beefs up" reality and tries to present the facts.......2006-05-16

12 Days of Terror is essentially a made-for-TV docu-drama that intends to captitalize on the consistent ratings buster "Shark Week" programs that Discovery Channel shows during sweeps a couple times a year. However, that doesn't make this film any less interesting or, a couple of times, emotionally charged.

The docu-drama presents the basic facts of the very real, very strange shark attacks that took place on the Jersey shore in 1916, when several people were attacked by a shark (or sharks) and subsequently died as a result of the attacks. Since it had only been a few years previous that people began to actually take swims in the ocean, the fear that these events induced was very real and very damaging to the burgeoning seaside resorts. One of the more bizarre aspects to the attacks is the fact that apparently one or more sharks made their way up Mattewan creek ( a freshwater creek) and took the life of a small boy and then that of the boy's would-be rescuer. Then, later, the shark mutilated yet a second boy.

12 Days of Terror stars former model/current TV soap opera hunk Colin Egglesfield as the lead in the film. Egglesfield will probably never win any acting awards, but this isn't a big budget film either. Egglesfield holds his own fairly well and isn't painfully bad, and at moments, even displays some thoughtful acting chops. Egglesfield, who is in just about every scene, is the emotional center of the film, and acts as "Everyman" in his reactions to the events that play out.

The script is based on a book which documents the true tragic events on the Jersey shore during the summer of 1916. The storyline has been adjusted to make it a bit more cinematic and dramatic. It doesn't really hurt the story, but it does make it seem that certain people were involved more consistently than they were.

Egglesfield's real life counterpart was certainly involved in two of the deaths, but beyond that he was not. The writers obviously wanted to create a linear lead for the film. The part of the fisherman (John Rhys-Davies) is a large supporting part, however, in reality, the fisherman only provided assistance when the shark was discovered in the creek. Rhys-Davies method of over-acting certainly balances Egglesfield's sub-acting.

What would have made the film a bit more robust is more background information on the era itself. Modern audiences are often uninformed and quick to dismiss historic events because they don't know the "why" aspects of the situation. More emphasis on the naivete of the experts with regard to sharks would have really helped. Instead, we only see that the shark expert keeps attempting to interview our male lead to learn more about what actually happened. That isn't effective in demonstrating what was known or believed at the time - more information should be shown so that we can see the difference between what was believed 90 years ago by science and what even the lay swimmer knows today. That would have been effective.

So...the film is not exactly true to the facts...does this make it a bad film? No. The acting isn't exactly stellar. Does that make it unwatchable? No. In fact, if anything, this film is more of a teaser, enticing the viewer to go out and read the book or at the very least to learn more about the actual events that took place that fateful summer of 1916.

Worth your time if you are interested in some of the historical aspects of the events.

    3 out of 5 stars (2.5 STARS) So-so B-Film Based on the 1916 New Jersey Shark Attack.......2006-03-06

Despite the all-too-familiar story about man-eating shark, "12 Days of Terror" tries to view the material from a different angle. The made-for-TV film uses the source material from the book of the same title written by Richard Fernicola, which reports the real-life events that happened in 1916 when people were attacked by a shark on the coast of New Jersey. The horrible attacks, which I think are now almost forgotten, influenced, it is said, Peter Benchley who wrote a book called `Jaws' much later.

Colin Egglesfield plays Alex, a life guard on duty when a shark attacked the first victim on July 1, 1916. Though there is no possible cause of the fatal injury on the person, the authority is not wise to close the beach, fearing the massive panic and decline of the local economy that relies heavily on vacationers.

Despite the too optimistic view of the Mayor, the attacks continue, killing people one after another. Alex decides to capture the killer shark with a help from a local fisherman (played by John Rhys-Davies).

I must confess that I haven't read the book '12 Days of Terror,' but in spite of the obviously fictionalized part of the film such as dialogues exchanged between Alex and his former girlfriend, the filmed version seems to be trying to be as faithful as possible to what happened to the victims of the shark attack as far as its costumes and the set are concerned.

And that is, I am afraid, exactly the weakness of the film. Many characters appear, including entrepreneur-minded animal trainer who is determined to catch the shark, but none of them is round and interesting enough to convince their authenticity. There is no scene-stealing Robert Shaw, and his memorable blackboard-scratching. Though the scenes of the shark attacks are competently done, giving some scary moments, the entire film seems at a loss about how to deal with the source material.

The director is Jack Sholder probably best known his sci-fi thriller `Hidden.' Though Sholder shows his skills in the scenes of shark attacks, the film could have been more suspenseful with more dramatic development of the story and characters, and perhaps with more deaths. However, as the film insists on its historical accuracy, using archive footages and costumes, that is not an option. As you see in the film's title, everything must be solved within 12 days, and that is what you see in this film.

The photography is beautiful, and the film is successful in giving occasional scares, but I couldn't help thinking about Steven Spielberg, who made drastic changes to the original book in making `Jaws.' I know the comparison is unfair, for Spielberg was dealing with a fiction, but it is also true that he knows what people want to see in this kind of film. '12 Days of Terror' tries to do something different, adding the historical truths to the format of the genre, which masterpieces like `Jaws' have already established. It is worthy attempt, but the marriage of history and shark attack is not a successful one.

      Description

First time director Julie Lopes-Curval, inspired by the visual poetry of Edward Hopper, has created a small masterpiece, a delicate, unsentimental ensemble film which evokes comparison to Eric Rohmer and Anton Chekhov. Winner at Cannes of the prestigious Camera d'Or (Best First Feature) and starring the legendary French actress Bulle Ogier (L'Amour Fou), Seaside chronicles a year in the lives of the inhabitants of a once-fashionable French seaside resort town. As the seasons change, they fall in and out of love, work at unfulfilling jobs, gamble away savings, and dream of escape. Life changes, yet remains the same.

2 out of 5 stars No Engaging Plot .......2005-09-09

Many of these characters' lives were so full of boredom and sadness. The acting was OK, but not great. I had trouble identifying with any of the characters in a film which seemed to jump from subject to subject. No political risks in the movie. They all seemed like strangers. Nice idea for a movie, but they didn't follow through.

Interesting scenery and it was fun to feel like you were experiencing France first hand...those are the only positive parts of the film.

3 out of 5 stars "We're all waiting for something.".......2005-08-07

Director Julie Lopes-Curval states that the film "Seaside" is inspired by Edward Hopper, and the film, visually, is stunning. But when critics compare "Seaside" to the films of Eric Rohmer ... no ... there's simply no comparison. Rohmer films are full of fascinating dialogue, and Rohmer films create scenarios and dialogues that allow the characters to work through their moral dilemmas. While the pacing of "Seaside" can arguably be compared to the pacing of a Rohmer film, the characters in "Seaside" are flat and uninteresting. If this is Rohmer--well, it's Rohmer without a heart and a soul.

"Seaside" is set in a small French resort. The main industry is pebble collection. The film is divided in four seasonal sections, and shows how the regulars and the tourists drift in and out of each other's lives. Marie (Helene Fillieres) works in the pebble-sorting factory. Albert's family once owned the factory, but although the factory employs Albert (Patrick Lizana), his heart--understandably--isn't in the job. There are a few other minor characters in the film--Marie's unenthusiastic boyfriend, Paul (Jonathan Zaccai), his slot-machine addicted mother Rose (Bulle Ogier), and Albert's mother, Odette (Liliane Rovere).

The idea of a seaside town invaded by tourists isn't new to cinema, but it's an idea that's been explored in far better films than "Seaside." The film fails to weld these characters into any sort of dissectible relationships. The marriage between Albert and his wife, for example, isn't explored. It exists, and we're shown a domestic scene or two, but there's no introspection. Marie and her boyfriend Paul are seen as not a particularly happy pair, but again, the film fails to really get inside the lives or the minds of its characters. The characters remain lonely, bored, disconnected drifters--but not much beyond that. It's as though they are all just distant, blurred figures on a beautiful postcard. 3 out of 5 stars "I saw you as a degenerate.".......2005-10-16

Life is one big long party for French girl Camille (Karin Viard). Unfortunately she's not really enjoying herself. Parties full of swingers--complete with bowls full of coloured condoms for the guests--lead to questionable couplings and horrendous hangovers. Quite frankly, Camille is a mess. After exiting the psychiatrist's office with an armful of pills, she stumbles into the path of Alexis. Alexis (Pierre-Loup Rajot) makes the fatal mistake of being kind to Camille, and from that moment on, she follows Alexis with a dog-like devotion.

Camille discovers that Alexis is a committed Socialist, so she immediately starts hanging out at Socialist Party meetings. The discovery that Alexis is married to Isabelle (Catherine Frot) and has two children doesn't deter Camille from her goal to bag her man.

While "The New Eve" has some original moments (and this film is strictly adults only), after about the halfway point, the film slides into disappointing cliches. The plot quickly and convincingly establishes the serious, self-destructive nature of Camille's lifestyle, and then unleashes her on Alexis. While Alexis's political commitment is emphasized, his Socialist beliefs are, as far as the plot is concerned--little more than a badge labeled 'unavailable'.The film's premise: 'serious committed Socialist meets unstable party girl' sets up the scenario, but fails to carry through with developing Alexis's character. Camille is a walking disaster, and the film fails to explain why Alexis finds her even remotely interesting. The film has its entertaining moments, but the failure to flesh out Alexis's character leaves the film as little more than a well-acted, superficial, romantic 'boy meets very troubled girl' vehicle peppered with wild party scenes for entertainment and variation. In French with English subtitles--displacedhuman

4 out of 5 stars Another typical french romantic comedy!.......2004-04-27

The movie is a typical french romantic comedy and this is rather a complement. As usual in such films you can expect deep pchylogical observations, in this case of quite unstable single woman in her thirties (played fabulously by Karin Viard). There is plenty of humor and even sarcasm in the movie. I was rather a little disappointed by the ending (contrary to what some other viewers said here) since I felt that it somehow didn't follow the spirit of the movie - therefore only four stars. But overall, if you like romantic comedies and/or like french movies you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The New Eve, So French, So Fun.......2002-03-12

This is a great romantic comedy with all the twists and turns of a typical French film. Camille (Karin Viard) is a bored young woman who hangs out at [exotic] clubs and often ends the night passed out from too much liquor and drugs. She has a disfunctional brother with a pregnant wife. One day she meets a socialist worker, Alexis, with whom she rapidly falls deeply in love. After she finds out he is married, she becomes involved with a truck driver and a lesbian. The sex scenes are fun, but not explict. The ending is poignant and sweet.

        2 out of 5 stars ..........2002-01-25

... this movie was extremly dry w/ little if any redeming factors.

5 out of 5 stars Karin Viard is a great actress.......2001-08-02

i have to say that i saw this film with spanish translation and thank God because the whole thing is in French. And i dont understand French because i dont speak it at all. i only speak spanish and english ,but i thought this motion picture was great and really worth my time viewing. Karin Viard, is truly, a fantastic actress who works at her character quite well. She is truly a gifted actress. i think she is very cute too. She plays a woman who falls in love with a married man and finds out that the married man will not leave her wife(teacher) for her. the situation infuriates Camille (Karin Viard)and so she works very hard at persuading him with words and positive actions at the work place that the only person she truly loves is him, that he is the love of her life. the ending is really something, which i feel everyone should see.ending is really sweet and beautiful and one actually wants a happy ending for camille in which it does happen. this motion picture titled "New Eve" which stars Karin Viard should be broadcasted on the major networks of this country (USA). movies such as these have so much feeling and soul.Great motion picture.... Ms. Karin Viard..sensational! buy it, very touching!
