Love is a mysterious game for the players in Choose Me, writer-director Alan Rudolph's uniquely eccentric spin on matters of the heart. A comedic drama steeped in a nocturnal, smooth-jazz atmosphere, the production is rooted in the mid-1980s but laced with a timeless film noir attitude. Its chamber-piece characters collide and carom from one to the other, each interaction revealing clues about how passions either cloud or clarify our paths to romantic fulfillment. Mickey (Keith Carradine) isn't the pathological liar he's supposed to be; sex-talk radio host Nancy Love (Geneviève Bujold) uses an assumed name and knows far less about sex than she lets on; and bar owner Eve (Lesley Ann Warren) knows too much about men but not enough about love. When they meet and mingle, Rudolph (using Teddy Pendergrass songs as the perfect mood-setting soundtrack) orchestrates a passionate dance of sex, sadness, and self-discovery that's wittily observant and altogether beguiling. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Auteur director Alan Rudolph (Afterglow) writes and directs this "intriguing, completely spontaneous" (Roger Ebert) and film-noirish tale of romantic entanglements set in hedonistic mid-1980s Los Angeles. An all-star ensemble cast, including OscarÂ(r) nominees* Lesley Ann Warren (Victor/Victoria) and Genevieve Bujold (Anne of the Thousand Days) dances in and out of love with strangers while searching for the true meaning of life. Anne Love (Bujold) is a successful on-air relationship counselor. Her popular show "The Love Line" has everyone in L.A. listening especially her new roommate, Eve (Warren), who calls in for advice and has no idea she's talking to Anne! But when a strange drifter (Keith Carradine, Wild Bill) enters their lives, things take a sudden, confusing and tumultuous turn in the heart department, forcing everyone to take a closer look at what they really want out of relationships, and more importantly just who they really are. *Warren: Supporting Actress, Victor/Victoria (1982); Bujold: Actress, Anne of the Thousand Days (1969)

5 out of 5 stars I adore this strange and complex but completely artistic movie.......2007-04-08

Leslie Ann Warren! Gorgeous and so so so talented! She lights up the screen with her brilliant beautiful smile, and backs everything up with deep talent.
Genevieve Bujold, another beauty, in a different way, equally talented...the changes she goes through as she learns about her own sexuality.
Keith Carredine- Not just an interesting and photogenic face with a dancers body... he too has the acting skill to convey the complexity of his character and how despite how he screws so many things up, his character;s heart wants love...
THe other actors and actresses... Rae Dawn Chong... excellent.
It is a very "80's" style movie, stylistic and somewhat strange... characters intermingling and intersecting... a very unique story about people;s desires to connect.
I dont want to sit and rehash the plot line, suffice to say it is a terrific artistic movie and well worth watching more than once.
The music by the incredible Teddy Pendergrass so perfectly outlines the story too. His songs play a huge part of the movie's structure...

5 out of 5 stars A REAL RIOT AND ALSO QUITE ENTICING AND SEXY.......2006-05-21

This is one great film. It's a lot of fun and it's also very sexy, surprising, and really a kick to watch. Women will live vicariously through Lesley Ann Warren's character ! You will either identify with her a lot, or you'll wish you could.
Lesley was perfect for this film ,and her "lovers" were all very charismatic. The plot is very busy and never dull. The whole cast was great. It's one of those films that seemed destined to "fit" and come to life. Original and a real blast.

5 out of 5 stars Does someone dislike Alan Rudolph in the DVD industry?.......2006-03-27

This is one of the best films ever made, solidly in my top 100. Look at the director, the cast, the strength of this great film, and then look at the ton of garbage being released every week on DVD, and ask yourself why "Trouble in Mind" and "Welcome to LA" are missing. And for that matter, note that there are only 11 reviews posted here for this film. An puzzling injustice.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite icons of the eighties!.......2005-11-06

A no mainstream entertainment with interesting and fine dialogues gives as result a fascinating portrait of those eighties. Atmospheric drama around the banality, frivolity and naïve domain of the life 's theory in this captivating story around a classic triangle affair.

All the cast was splendid: From the disturbed Genevieve Bujold, the easy going life of Leslie Ann Warren and the mysterious and elusive male character played by Keith Carradine.

I must acknowledge that Alan Rudolph made me think he would climb the highest peaks after The Moderns, but evidently, something happened on the road.

5 out of 5 stars A Quirky Ode To Sexual Liberation (And Romance!).......2003-09-11

'Choose Me' is an odd little movie, set in a stylized (and stylish), totally libidinous after hours kind of twilight, even though some scenes take place in the day. The onscreen music is after hours jazz, and the soundtrack underneath uses songs of Teddy Pendergrass in sometimes shockingly effective, nearly subliminal ways. The complex plot, which I leave to others to describe, deals with the curious interface between love and lust in a witty, ironic way. Keith Carradine is compelling as the mysterious stranger who is all things to all the women in the film. Bujold does a nearly dual role as radio talk show host Nancy Love and her daytime alter ego, Ann. It's a lot of fun, as well as something to give you pause as you pursue your desires.
