Bean, Bean, maniacal nut / The more you watch, you bust a gut! First unleashed in 1989, this sketch series was embraced by PBS viewers in the United States. In the tradition of the great silent clowns, Rowan Atkinson created a character with universal and multi-generational appeal (the sketches have little dialogue and are driven by often ingenious physical comedy). Like Bart Simpson, the resourceful, mischievous, and sometimes malevolent Bean is the inner child incarnate who acts on the impulses polite society normally represses. Atkinson has described Bean as "a 9-year-old boy, with an apparent lack of worldly experience, but an ingenuity that is quite clever in dealing with problems presented to him." These problems include not knowing a single answer on an exam, tactfully disposing of a revolting restaurant meal, changing into his swimsuit at the beach without first removing his pants, and, most hilariously, getting a turkey stuck on his head (a classic bit reprised in the ill-conceived 1997 feature film).
Atkinson has enjoyed some mainstream success stateside. He was the nervous minister ("...your awfully wedded wife") in Four Weddings and a Funeral, and the voice of Zazu in The Lion King. But he mainly enjoys cult status among British comedy aficionados as a founding member of Not the Nine O'Clock News and the star of the Black Adder series. Bean is his crowning creation. In addition to all 14 episodes, this generous boxed set contains previously unaired sketches, Comic Relief appearances, and a segment about Bean's creation, which serves as a nifty introduction for the uninitiated. It also contains a preview for the new Mr. Bean animated series. This seems redundant. As this collection hilariously demonstrates, Bean is already animated enough. --Donald Liebenson
Customer Reviews:
Classic Bean.......2007-06-08
Atkinson is hilarious and amazing, a bit too risque in some sketches for children but overall very funny!
Got to love the Bean.......2007-05-18
My child is finally old enough to enjoy the same things that make me laugh. Going through the various movies, books, music and plays that I think are mandatory to develop a well rounded sense of humor, Mr. Bean is right in there with the best. Besides, Mr. Bean is one of the rare places you can turn for creative humor with no fear of sexual jokes, swear words, or other questionable matter. It's safe to watch no matter who is in the room.
Enjoyable.......2007-05-07
I've not yet viewed all the DVDs in the set, but totally enjoyed the ones I've seen. I bought the complete set in order to get "Mr Bean goes to church". I find it very eye opening, in a humorous way, and down to earth.
Frank about Bean.......2007-05-07
Childlike Bean hits the spot.
Rowan Atkinson is truly wonderful. No better physical comedian since Red Skelton.
Bean.......2007-04-11
Rowan Atkinson is hilarious as Mr. Bean. This is pretty safe humor for kids as well, so you can watch it with the whole family. You don't find quality humor on TV like this any more. Definitely worth the price even if you are just a mild Mr. Bean fan. I purchased a set for myself and one for my brother.

An earnest and at times overblown story of a music teacher's impact on those around him, Mr. Holland's Opus is at times a genuinely touching drama in the vein of It's a Wonderful Life. Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) plays an aspiring composer and musician who takes a job teaching music at a local high school to save money while he composes his music. But when his wife (Glenne Headley) becomes pregnant, Glenn Holland must put aside his dreams and address the everyday realities of his life, from the melancholy and sometimes tragic fates of his students to the discovery that the son he cherishes is deaf. Building to a highly emotional climax in which the teacher sees the impact he's had on the world around him, Mr. Holland's Opus is a showcase for a fine Oscar-nominated performance by Dreyfuss and an engaging, heartwarming story. --Robert Lane
Description
Acclaimed star Richard Dreyfuss gives the performance of a lifetime (1995 Academy Award(R)-nominee, Best Actor -- MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS) in this uplifting hit cheered by audiences everywhere! Glenn Holland (Dreyfuss) is a passionate musician who dreams of composing one truly memorable piece of music. But reality intrudes when he reluctantly accepts a "day job" as a high school music teacher to support his family. In time, however, Mr. Holland realizes that his real passion is teaching, and his legacy is the generations of young people he inspires. Also featuring Glenne Headly (BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS) and Olympia Dukakis (MAFIA!) -- you're sure to find this electrifying motion picture both entertaining ... and unforgettable!
Customer Reviews:
Magnum Opus.......2007-06-12
Without becoming breezy or overly sentimental, 'Mr. Holland's Opus' shows us the dilemma of many teachers. How does one juggle all of the piles of responsibility one is given, and how does one rise above the fray to achieve greatness? With many hurdles to overcome, Glenn Holland (in an extraordinary performance by Richard Dreyfuss) comes to Portland's Kennedy High School with the aspiration of employment filler with enough free time to compose his own music. Naive about the demands for extra-curriculars and student tutoring, Glenn, nevertheless, must reinvent the wheel and learn to accomodate his students by taking risks to win their love for music. Locking heads with the vice principal (played with perfect starchy officiousness by William Macy), he nearly loses his job and composure. At home his loving, understanding wife will stand by him, but plausibly loses patience when their own beloved son (who was born deaf) gets the shaft on some quality mentor time. Feeling his pain, we also are absorbed in the lives of key students (in fine early performances by Terrence Howard and [Forrest] Whitaker to name a couple). He gets reprieves with the football coach (Jay Thomas) who offers friendship and a spirited rivalry. With a rising starlet at his school and the soundtrack of their lives evolving to John Lennon, the poignancy of a man who has painted himself into a corner comes to roost.
'Mr. Holland's Opus' is as realistic as it is an emotional dead ringer. Admittedly, I prejudged this movie on the notion that it would be facile, cloying, or overly sentimental. Nothing could be further from the truth.
the best driffus movie of al times.......2007-05-23
This movie was smash hit and got Drifus the oscar nomie for best actor. This movie was a smash hit back in 1996 making 83 milion in the United Statee and 103 million world wide. For those of you that loved Forest Gummp you will love this movie. This movie will always be the best Drifuss movie ever made of all time. If one teacher could effect that many kids. Then image what the natios of the world could do in real life. They could come together and put aside their petty differecnes and embrace there fellow man and women. I just have one thing to say God bless you Richard Drifus we need more people like you in these year of war aginst the middle east. Mr. Halland oppus show's the courage and purity that lies in the most seemingly difante of souls. That one man can change the lives of millions of people around him. If we can join together and work with each other instead of destroying and put each other down we can change the world and make it a place of peace for all nations. Christian, Jews, Araibs, Muyslins, Mormons, Japanse Athist everything inbetween from Hindu to Vodo. Together we can face overcome odds that would seem impossible to others. As the old song goes I quote"United we stand divide we fall". I recommend this movie for all ages. There is some mild language but that makes the movie even more phonimal and uplifting. This movie will be an utimate classic for decades to come. Mr Holland's Opus is a real tear jerk you will be laughing and crying at the same time. This movie will make you want enjoy life or in the words of Richard Driffus"Play the sunset!"
WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST MOVE.......2007-05-08
NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE
Amazing!.......2007-04-02
Mr. Holland's Opus is such a truly amazing movie! Its one of those movies that you first tune in to for the music, and then realize that it is an inspiring movie. The story of Glenn Holland, a fictional music teacher, who is ousted from his position after 30 years, is extremely touching. At first you don't want to like this man, who thought that he could write a symphony while teaching high school music, but you grow to love him as you see him interact with his students throughout the years. If you like Music of the Heart check out Mr. Holland's Opus.
Great acting ~ great gift idea!.......2007-03-28
If you love music, and who doesn't.. you will love this movie. The acting is wonderful ~ Richard Dreyfus gives a great performance, and it really makes you appreciate the joy of music itself. Fast shipping, great gift idea.

Cary Grant stars as an advertising executive who dreams of getting out of the city and building a perfect home in the country, only to find the transition fraught with problems. (See the 1980s Tom Hanks comedy The Money Pit for an updated version of the same idea.) The big appeal here are the two leads, Grant and Myrna Loy, who were each in their early 40s and at the peak of their careers. Together with solid support from Melvyn Douglas and a screenplay that might have been tailor-made for their polished brand of comedy, the stars dominate this simple project. --Tom Keogh
Description
Cary Grant is hilarious as a successful New York advertising executive who wants to escape the confines of his family's tiny midtown apartment. So he designs his dream home in the suburbs and discovers the project wasn't as easy as it seemed. The house gets larger. The bills get bigger. The problems just won't go away. Eventually, the whole affair becomes a nightmare-a very funny nightmare-that left audiences laughing in 1948 and will have you in stitches, too. This is the comedic masterpiece that inspired the popular 1987 movie "The Money Pit." It's an adventure in homeowning that strikes a familiar chord with everyone who's ever bought a house. Year: 1948 Director: H.C. Potter Starring: Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, Melvyn Douglas
Customer Reviews:
My favorite movie..........2007-05-12
This movie has been my favorite since I was a young girl ~ I am now in my mid-fifties...and I have yet to change my mind.
My favorite actor of all time, Cary Grant, puts in one of the most wonderful performances of his career in this film...as a hapless, exhausted, overburdened middle-class ad exec trying to build a home in the country for his family ~ and set back at every turn through (usually) no fault of his own.
His bank account takes a severe beating by the end of the story, but he indeed gets what he wants...however, not without nearly losing everything of value beforehand!!
This story is one that continues to entertain, enchant and enthrall viewers even today ~ generations after it was first released to the public.
I daresay that the public in those days was thoroughly delighted and if they still made movies like this today, we would be lucky indeed.
A must watch for all homeowners/contractors!.......2007-04-18
My contractor husband has decided this is mandatory viewing for all homeowners even thinking of building or remodeling their home! The film highlights some of the foils of building that perfect dream home, and trust me, not all of them are exaggerated. This is great comedy, even if it does hit a little close to home for those who have 'been there and done that'. I especially love Cary Grant's performance as the flustered husband trying to please everyone while stressed about coming up with a new advertising slogan for 'wham ham'. A slogan that is vital if he wants to keep his job. Wonderful classic!
Chrissy K. McVay - Author
Mr. Blandings Is a Miss.......2007-04-13
I'm an "old movie buff" and I find this to be a pretty awful movie. It's really full of the most simple-minded dialogue. See these great actors in something that's a little less polemical. The writers' social conservatism just jumps off the screen. You could use this for a Media Studies film to contrast with an "old film" from the same time that shows people living with much more self-awareness. Two stars only for the bright young daughters - great actresses!
Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House.......2007-04-10
You have to be an old movie 'Buff' to enjoy this one. It's a feel-good, old-time movie. Entertaining.
Don't miss the paint color choices, and the mud room scene.......2007-03-15
Yes, it's an old-fashioned comedy. But if you like sparkling, intelligent, witty dialogue; the best of performances from the three stars; complete believability even in farcical comedy; and want proof that small New York apartments, interior decorating, and price-gouging contractors, are nothing new, then rent this and enjoy it. The rural Connecticut in this film seems a lot closer to Maine than it does to New York City (which Mr Blandings commutes to every day) and when the town's bridge goes out, everyone is stuck where they are and no one can use a phone--those were the days. Gussie the cook is a bit embarrassing as written, but she turns out to be the smartest one in the bunch--all she gets out of it is a modest raise. Still, keep everything in context, and enjoy it. The film quality is clear (though b & w), the sound good.

Remember watching this silly little comedy from your childhood? It may not have aged all that well, but is still goofy, good fun. Okay, so you can spot the stunt double, and Don Knotts's twitches are a little more obvious. Still, fans of his familiar routines will be comforted in knowing they can again watch their skinny underdog hero solve the ghost story while winning the prettiest girl in town. Knotts plays a trembling typesetter hoping to become a reporter by cracking the mystery of the local haunted house. To do so, he must spend a night there. Good-hearted, non-threatening, and completely gooey, this is the equivalent of light-weight cinematic junk food. -- Rochelle O'Gorman

It's so scary you'll laugh yourself silly. The ghost of Mr. Chicken is a true comedy. Everything Don Knotts' [staring as Mr. Chicken or Luther Heggs] does is hilarious. This movie is hard to find. You can rent it at your local blockbuster or other movie rental place. You can also try to purchase it off the Internet. This is a family film. The movie is not rated, but I would say it would be rated G. It doesn't have any foul language or violence in this movie. Even though it was made in 1965 it does have color.
My family and I were watching the movie and we were cracking up the whole way through. Everyone that has watched it thought it was hilarious. The movie is a 4 ½ star rating. I don't think this movie is for little kids. The reason is, is that it doesn't have any bright color and they won't pay much attention. I would say it would be for ages ten and up.
The movie is about a guy named Luther Heggs who works with a newspaper and tries to write an article about anything he can find. But, everything that he wants to write about the other people think it's crazy and stupid. Then the next day or so later the other workers told him that he could go to the murder house and write about what happens in there.
Will Luther go into the murder house? If he does, will he make it out?
Barney Fife comes to the big screen.......2007-03-30
Don Knotts was a smart man. He knew his abilities as an actor. He took his famous Barney Fife character to the big screen. In this movie he was known as Luther Hages (at-a-boy Luthers) This is basically a movie version of the Andy Griffith show only without Andy, Opie, or Aunt Bea. Otis is in there, along with Clara Edwards and a bunch of other character actors seen from the show. Also, the second Darrin Stevens (Bewitched) is there as his boss. This is a fun movie. Typical storyline where a little man who gets no respect does everything to impress the prettiest girl in town (and she was). And he becomes the hero and gets the girl at the end. I can watch this movie over and over. It's from a simplier time and is ageless, just like its TV equivlent. You just can't help wanting Barney(or Luther) to win everytime.
Old movies only get better when you watch them later........2007-03-25
No one beats Don Knotts acting like a nervous nelly. His movies are classics, especially this one.
too expensive.......2006-10-14
yes, waaaay too expensive
when you think that the same film is included in a multiple set that only costs $13

Ever wonder what would happen if the imaginary worlds of Bedknobs and Broomsticks and SpongeBob SquarePants were to collide? If so, chances are good you've yet to discover The Incredible Mr. Limpet. Starring the irrepressible Don Knotts, this 1964 family feature combines live (land) action and animated (undersea) sequences with delightful results. During World War II, Knotts is mild-mannered, spectacle-sporting bookkeeper Henry Limpet. More than anything--he's a fish fan and a patriot. When the navy rejects him due to poor eyesight, he falls into a funk from which not even his beloved aquarium or loving--if bossy--wife can rescue him. So he makes a wish... to become a fish. Next thing he knows--he is! With a little help from a hermit crab named Crusty and the lovely Ladyfish, it's as a talking, bespectacled fish that Limpet proves himself the war hero he always knew he was meant to be. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Hailed as one of the greatest films of all time, The Incredible Mr. Limpet is a story about the wonders of imagination and the triumph of the spirit. Live-action and 2-D animation combine to tell the story of a man who longs to be a fish after he is classified by the Navy as an F4 - "too small and too weak to be a soldier." When his dream of being a fish becomes a reality, Henry uses his underwater prowess to become the Navy's strongest secret weapon.

GREAT COMEDY TEAM.......2007-06-06
WORTH THE MONEY
WHO DINT LOVE THIS SHOW , THIS SHOW WAS GREAT
I LOVE THIS DVD, BRINGS BACK LAUGHTER AND MEMORYS AND YOU NEVER GET BORED WITH IT,
Hit and miss quality.......2007-05-17
This final installment in this series seems more geared towards completists and serious fans instead of new or casual fans. Of the six films included, only half of them are actually A&C movies, all of them from the very end of their movie career (though at least they're of noticeably better quality than a lot of the turkeys on Volume 3). The other three films are documentaries, none of which are particularly ground-breaking; 'The World of A&C' in particular is awful. And though this was originally released as two flipper discs, the set I got had three one-sided discs, a big step up from the earlier problem-plagued double-sided DVDs all of these volumes were put out on. However, the menu on the first two discs hasn't been changed to reflect that, and still gives the impression that it's double-sided, what with asking the viewer to flip the disc over if s/he wants to watch the other film(s).
'A&C Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' (1953) is pretty good, probably the strongest of the three films on here, though it is slowed down a bit by a boring romantic subplot and an even more superfluous subplot about the suffragist movement in late 19th century England. Boris Karloff's Jekyll and Hyde character is also a bit one-dimensional, lacking the depth and emotional compellingness of other film portrayals of this famous dual character. Still, there are a lot of great moments and scenes in here, such as the scene in the wax museum, the search for the monster in the dressing rooms, and the chaos that ensues in both London and the police station when Lou's character (with the rather cringe-worthy name Tubby) turns into the monster at the same time that the real monster is on the loose.
'A&C Meet the Keystone Kops' (1955) is probably the weakest film on here, though I wouldn't go so far as to say it's one of their all-time worst. It feels more like a series of skits than a coherent whole, with each skit woven smoothly into the overall plot. Still, while not as inspired as their earlier classics, there is a lot of fun stuff here, such as the scene in the aeroplane, the scenes on the train, the early scenes where Bud is mistaken for Lou's abusive father, and the chase at the end. This film is also noteworthy because Bud's character was finally funny instead of being purely the straightman. He does a lot more physical comedy here than he ever did before; at least this development was better late than never.
'A&C Meet the Mummy' (1955) is actually pretty good for being their penultimate film, and their final film at Universal. I think it's rather better than its pretty dismal reputation, even though the boys are looking old and tired by this late point. There are a number of great scenes here, such as the hamburger-switching, the "take your pick" routine, and the three mummies running around in the Tomb of Klaris (though the real mummy doesn't look all that convincingly scary, just like someone wrapped in a bunch of bandages). Interestingly, Bud's character is billed as Peter Patterson and Lou's character is billed as Freddie Franklin in the credits, yet they call one another by their real names all throughout the film.
'A&C Meet the Monsters' is a brief mini-documentary a bit over a half-hour long, narrated by David Skal, and focusing on all of the horror spoofs they did in the late Forties and early Fifties. It's interesting enough, but could have been longer and covered more ground. 'A&C Meet Jerry Seinfeld' is the most interesting of the documentaries; it provides clips from their films, their tv show, and various appearances they made on other tv shows, home movies (a number of them in color), and a fair amount of historical background. Seinfeld's love of and enthusiasm for the team is palpable, but never crosses the line into fawning. It's always nice when a documentary is narrated by someone who actually has enthusiasm for the subject(s) instead of by someone who doesn't have much of an opinion one way or the other. Still, there isn't a lot of information here that most fans don't already know. 'The World of A&C' is a terrible clipshow from 1965, with obnoxious unfunny narration by Jack E. Leonard. The clips (from 19 of their films) are shown without rhyme or reason, with no context provided, and aren't even identified until the end credits. They're also not even shown in chronological order, which doesn't allow the viewer to get a sense of how their craft, screen relationship, and characters grew and evolved over time. Besides that, most of the clips are from their later films such as 'Mexican Hayride,' 'Lost in Alaska,' and 'A&C Go to Mars,' which aren't exactly regarded as the cream of the crop. It's inexplicable why their earlier, more representative, films were ignored or given such short schrift. And with no background information provided, just a nonstop stream of clips, the viewer will have no sense of why they were so popular and great.
Overall, while none of these films are really classics, I do think they're better than their reputations. While this isn't a set that's ideal for the new or casual fan, it does have a lot of great moments for the more established fan. It's just too bad it's padded out with three documentaries instead of the rest of their later films that haven't already been released.
A&C with fillers..........2007-05-15
This is a mix of some funny stuff with a few other materials thrown in but not necessarily for good measure. However, that is what the search button on the remote is for. All in all, A&C is classic slapstick...with my favorites being the Jekyl & Hyde and the Mummy sequences. It is something that will give some good laughs to all generations. I wouldn't say this volume is exceptional, but a few selections will give a nice smack on the funny bone.
abbott & costello fan club.......2007-05-13
I am a big fan of them from many years ago, and since we have the dvds (all of them) my kids really enjoy all their movies too, and think they are hilarious. My kids are 11, 9, and 5 and other then the fact that they dont know why its in black and white, they laugh like crazy, and because they are harmless, our whole family can watch them together, which is a rare thing these days.
The Best of Abbott and Costello .......2007-03-13
The DVD plays great and it,s not to bad of a comedy series so all and all like I said it,s okay but I,ve seen better comedy series.

Political heavyweights decide that Jefferson Smith (James Stewart), an obscure scoutmaster in a small town, would be the perfect dupe to fill a vacant U.S. Senate chair. Surely this naive bumpkin can be easily controlled by the senior senator (Claude Rains) from his state, a respectable and corrupted career politician. Director Frank Capra fills the movie with Smith's wide-eyed wonder at the glories of Washington, all of which ring false for his cynical secretary (Jean Arthur), who doesn't believe for a minute this rube could be for real. But he is. Capra was repeating the formula of a previous film, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, but this one is even sharper; Stewart and Arthur are brilliant, and the former cowboy star Harry Carey lends a warm presence to the role of the vice president. Bright, funny, and beautifully paced, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is Capra's ode to the power of innocence--an idea so potent that present-day audiences may find themselves wishing for a new Mr. Smith in Congress. The 1939 Congress was none too thrilled about the film's depiction of their august body, denouncing it as a caricature; but even today, Capra's jibes about vested interests and political machines look as accurate as ever. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Great Political Appreciation Movie!.......2007-05-06
Jimmy Stewart is fabulous in this movie! His wonderment of everything in D.C. is enough to inspire anyone about our great nation. As a novice of all things political, he comes to Washington as a new senator, determined to build a boys camp where they can have more opportunities to learn and grow. With growing opposition from other senators, even one that he once trusted, Jefferson Smith (Stewart) he rallies against impossible odds to not only get the bill passed, but to gain respect from the other senators and show that good things still happen in American Governement, if we only believe and never give up. Very inspirational!
The Lincoln Memorial.......2007-04-24
The following review contains SPOILERS regarding the film's ending:
This spring I had the opportunity to visit Washington D.C. for the first time. Of the entire trip, my most special moment was when I saw where my favorite President, Abraham Lincoln, and my favorite patriotic
film, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, met: the Lincoln Memorial.
There are a few choice films that every American should see as a reminder of the great freedoms God has bestowed upon our country. Rarely does a film urge us to give our all - sweat, toil, grit, and guts - to
defend such freedoms. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is one of them. The Frank Capra directed film made its debut in 1939 just prior to World War II and James Stewart's real life military service. Although it was
criticized by many politicians and newsmen of its day, it has gone down as one of America's most patriotic and stirring films.
The classic struggle of one man - betrayed, slandered, and prepared to quit - who yet stays to fight til the bitter end, is one that stirs mankind and transcends generations. During one of the most stirring
sequences of the film, Miss Saunders (Jean Arthur) challenges Smith to stay. She asks him, "Jeff, what did you do, quit? Didn't you do something about it? . . . You can't quit now, not you. . . . You didn't just have faith in Paine or any other living men - you had faith in something bigger than that." Such a desire to persevere in the face of great opposition has been engraved on our souls by the Almighty God of creation. And - it is only by the grace of God that anything can be accomplished through us.
The first time I watched Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, I was upset that the American political system had failed. If Senator Paine had not finally succumb, our system would not have protected us. However, I later realized Frank Capra's greater message in the film: the system will not work unless we have men who demonstrate moral values upholding it. This lesson is rarely taught in classrooms today - where all social problems are deemed solvable through the eyepiece of bureaucratic government. There is a great need to be reminded of the truth so eloquently stated by President John Adams: "We have no
government armed with power capable of contending with emotions unbridled by morality and religion . . . Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
This message is constantly reverberated throughout the film. During Smith's filibuster he tells his fellow Senators, "I wouldn't give you two cents for all your fancy rules, if behind them they didn't have a
little bit of plain, ordinary, everyday kindness - and a little looking out for the other fellow."
Another powerful message is represented by Jean Arthur. She is the one who encourages him fight that last bloody battle. There is something so beautiful about a woman who desires to stand behind her man, and the necessity of her encouragement to help him persevere. If more women realized their potential as exhorters of man, would there be more "Mr. Smiths"?
Great Movie!!!.......2007-04-16
I first saw this movie during summer school of my government class just to get it out of the way for senior year and i am so happy i did because if i didnt i never would have found out about this movie. although it is in black and white and it's from "back in the day" it is such a powerful movie.
it tells alot about what might go on in the senate, and to have james stewart pull off such a typical nice guy who can rant like there is now tomorrow was just powerful. And to see him and jean arthur together again was just great.
if your lookin for a classic to bring you into classic movies this one would be it!!!
A Lesson on How Government Works.......2007-04-04
A United States Senator has died and the Governor must appoint a replacement to get the approval of a dam in the state. [Water supplies, or power, are very important in western states.] Politicians have been buying up the lands near the proposed dam. ["Honest graft" said George Washington Plunkett.] The film shows the back-room deals of the political bosses. But the Governor's children clamor for Jefferson Smith (showing the effects of the media on impressionable minds). Candidate selection by luck? The Governor explains his logic: a young fresh face will impress the voters [and the machine will do the job of getting him elected]. Smith is a fast learner, he knows how to flatter the powerful Senator Paine. Smith's father was murdered by a mining corporation (but they couldn't prove it). Arriving in Washington he is greeted by lovely young women ("groupies", a hint of scandal). Smith visits the Federal monuments and buildings. Smith is so naive you know it is just an act. His pet idea is a "Boy's Camp" for city boys. The film shows how the media can play the news in its photographs of Senator Smith.
The Senate commences with a prayer for wisdom. [Have they ever prayed for honesty and common sense?] Smith punches out the newspaper men who offended him [but they were just doing their job, following orders]. These journalists tell Smith how they see things. Senator Price explains how the laws are made; even a lawyer can't understand them. Secretary Saunders explains how bills are made into laws. [This is a tutorial for the people who forgot their civics courses.] Smith's camp would be located by Willett Creek (where the dam would be built). Smith's speech is played for laughs, but the visitors cheer and clap for this well-meaning plan. Senator Paine's daughter Susan will divert Smith away from the Senate when the bill for the Willett Creek dam is introduced. [Could Smith be working for the interests of Big Coal who don't want competition from hydroelectric power?] A tipsy Clarissa Saunders explains how the trick was done. Could the Senate introduce a bill that benefits one rich man? [This film shows how political bosses control the politicians.]
Jim Taylor advises Senator Smith to do what is best for his state, where Taylor owns many businesses and newspapers. Senator Paine explains the need for "compromise", playing ball. The next day Senator Paine brings up the facts about Senator Smith: ownership of the Willett Creek lands! Expert witnesses testify as to the validity of Smith's signature. Shall government "of the people, by the people, for the people" perish from this earth? Clarissa Saunders returns to advise Jefferson Smith on how to fight his expulsion. Smith launches a filibuster to prevent this, and creates dramatic speeches. Senators protest by walking out, but a quorum call gets them back. Taylor orders the press to censor Smith's speech! [Can one wealthy individual still control the media in one state?] The other Senators agree to put down this upstart. One small weekly newspaper will print the truth, even when gangsters attack the newsboys. Will the people suffer from Taylor and his gang? Thousands of telegrams were sent against Smith; he collapsed from fatigue. But there is a surprise ending that ends happily.
Signing an option to buy land shows Smith is learning how government works. Building a dam would provide jobs and future hydroelectric power. It is a more sensible project than a reform school. This film swindles your emotions by presenting a one-sided and biased viewpoint.

James Stewart reunites with his Harvey director, Henry Koster, in this 1962 comedy, which is charming enough even though it doesn't seem quite up to the level of talent involved. (The screenwriter is the legendary Nunnally Johnson--writer and director of The Three Faces of Eve, among many other titles--and the music is by Henry Mancini.) But it is pleasant, summery entertainment with Stewart and his screen wife, Maureen O'Hara, taking their urban family to a crumbling, seaside house for a vacation. The film was calculated to pull in older fans with Stewart as well as draw in a younger crowd that would enjoy the fairly extensive beach scenes with pop-star Fabian. Stewart is deft with the easy jokes about bad plumbing and such, and golden in several nice moments where he gets to play an attentive dad to his kids. --Tom Keogh
Description
When James Stewart decides to take his family on vacation in California, he needs another vacation to recover. Co-stars Fabian.

Great Movie - Definitly a great buy and a steal @ the price........2007-07-03
I love this movie. If you enjoy classic movies and like comedies you'll love this movie. The whole family will find something to enjoy and the movie bears well with repeat viewings. It's a nice slice of a time that's long gone and the issues are the same no matter the decade when you get a family on vacation together.
You'll love the cast and the script moves briskly.
Happy viewing!
It doesn't get better than this!.......2007-06-16
I love, love, love this movie! So funny and so real as far as family relationships go. Even though the lingo and clothing are out-dated, it doesn't matter. Time does not change how we interact with our spouses, bosses, and especially children/parents. Everyone can relate to this film. Great fun and highly recommended to all!
Must See.......2007-06-01
A wonderful Hollywood classic. Light and funny with some down to earth situations every family faces. They just don't make them like this any more.
Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation.......2007-05-17
This was a favorite of mine growing up. Fun, goofy, and all around enjoyable movie. Jimmy Stewart is in good form and plays a great father. A little dated maybe in terms of styles, but the theme of family comes through no matter what.
Great movie for those that like this era, these actors!.......2007-05-16
Good reviews here already. I wanted to add another one, so that I could update one thing - I just got my DVD here from Amazon this May/2007, and it is indeed Widescreen Version! I am delighted at that. Was not sure it would be from what I could read on it here, but it came Widescreen. My favorite scene is the sailboating. It is so comical to see Mr. Hobbs son enjoying the near misses (boat accidents) and being completely oblivious to his Dad's fright when steering between them - the look on Jimmy Stewart's face and eyes is classic. Maureen O'Hara is lovely as in all her movies. John McGiver is a hoot, especially on the bird watching extraveganza! I believe I remember him in "Man's Favorite Sport", where he was Rock Hudson's boss in that movie. Such a great sense of straight-faced comedy... I like McGiver. Fabian is also very good in this ... I remember him best from his role with John Wayne in North to Alaska. Well ... in that movie I guess I remember Capucine the best, but I digress. Back to this movie. From the moment Mr. Hobbs and family arrive at the worn down beach house the fun begins. The pump which supplies water to the house supplies fun of its own. I'm a huge Jimmy Stewart fan for all of his movies, and this one is no different. His delivery and timing is perfectly suited, and he plays well across from Maureen O'hara. Last... I like seeing Valerie Varda on the beach. There is something for everyone in this movie.

This 1949 Disney feature has never been available on video in its original form until now. The 68-minute film contains two shorts: The Wind in the Willows and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The former is a lively version of Kenneth Grahame's book of animal adventures, including Mr. Toad, a rambunctious sort with a passion for motorcars. Basil Rathbone narrates the story. Sleepy Hollow is the Washington Irving story of a stuffy schoolmaster and his ability to win the love of the fair Katrina from the brutish Brom Van Brunt. Many fans will see a resemblance to Disney's masterpiece created some 40 years later, Beauty and the Beast, in style and story. The end is still scary enough to send youngsters under the table. Bing Crosby supplies the narration, character voices, and songs. The opening number in a library including two stories has been included in this good-looking restoration. The shorts were made in Disney's prime, a year before Cinderella, and the look is wondrous. The exaggeration of Ichabod's skinny frame and his slumping horse is a glorious example. --Doug Thomas
Description
In the great tradition of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS and CINDERELLA, Disney's 11th animated masterpiece, THE ADVENTURES OF ICHABOD AND MR. TOAD, introduced two literary classics to the screen. Through award-winning Disney-animated wizardry, these unforgettable children's stories come together as one fabulous adventure. THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS follows the wild ride of J. Thaddeus Toad, squire of Toad Hall. Smitten with motorcars, the wealthy and reckless sportsman soon drives his close friends Mole, Rat, and Angus MacBadger into a worried frenzy! Then meet Ichabod Crane, the spindly schoolteacher who dreams of sweeping the lovely Katrina off her feet -- until Brom Bones, the town bully, gets involved. Their comic rivalry introduces Ichabod to THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW, the fabled Headless Horseman, and a hair-raising, heart-thumping climax. Narrated by legendary stars Basil Rathbone and Bing Crosby, THE ADVENTURES OF ICHABOD AND MR. TOAD is brimming with high-spirited adventure, brilliant animation, and captivating music -- now available for the first time in keeping with Walt's original theatrical vision.

Excellent Disney movie!.......2007-05-24
This DVD has two of my most favorite Disney classics! My Disney collection is complete!
Well Done Disney.......2007-05-13
It's great that Disney are re-releasing their product for todays generation of young children.
I hope they get as much pleasure watching these timeless animated features as I did when I was their age.
i wonder if bing & basil woulda been a good team?.......2007-03-30
financial stress (not to mention ww2) caused the disney studio to give up feature-length animation for most of the 1940s; instead, we frequently got programmers like this double bill based on tales by washington irving ("the legend of sleepy hollow") and kenneth grahame ("wind in the willows"): masterpieces of fiction but only adequate transfers to screen. voiced with some charm by bing crosby and basil rathbone respectively, they are entertaining and inoffensive, tho hardly major works of the disney canon.
good dvd.......2007-03-25
we only watch the headless horseman story and the kids (boys and girls ages 3-9 all like it
One hilarious short and a great spooky one.......2007-03-16
It's strange to see 2 shorts so different and opposing yet fit so well. You know something still resonates with you where you can almost actually nail the timing of it from the dialogue to the songs and specific scenes. Watching both brought back quite a bit of memories and both were still entertaining in their own rights without that kind of aged quality. They were fun and scary at age 6 and they're fun now as well. The only thing I wish was different was the transfer. It's almost like Disney didn't even bother to clean this up like they just slapped on the negative and left it. You get colored dots, specks of dusts and scratches and the image as that flickering quality you might've seen on VHS.
The Wind in the Willows, based on the book by Kenneth Grahame and narrated by Basil Rathbone, follows Mr. Toad, an incredibly impulsive character prone to overspending and just as much in fees who gets into so-called "manias". He spots a motorcar one day and is obsessed to the point where he's framed and thrown in jail. With help from his friends MacBadger, Moley and Rat, he has to get his deed back and prove his innocence. The short is funny and even a bit touching in a couple of places.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, based on the story by Washington Irving and narrated by Bing Crosby, has Ichabod coming to the town of Sleepy Hollow and becomes a school teacher. He falls instantly smitten with Katrina and tries to gain her favor from the brutish, pre-Gaston resident Brom Bones. Brom, to get even with him, tells him the story of the Headless Horseman, a black rider who rides the woods one night a year in search of a head. Even with the controversy they get from parents, Disney can do some pretty heavy scenes, as evidenced by Bambi's mother, the Black Cauldron or the meteor hit from the recent Dinosaur. Add to that is Ichabod's travel through the woods which is an excellent study in sound and imagery to creep you out. Even in older years, it still is an effective scene and most likely the highlight of the whole disc.
This seriously needs a remaster, not simply because of the transfer but also since you get the feeling both stories deserve a better look.
