The surprise hit of 1995, this splendidly entertaining family film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including best picture, director, and screenplay, and deservedly won the Oscar for its subtly ingenious visual effects. Babe is all about the title character, a heroic little pig who's been taken in by the friendly farmer Hoggett (Oscar nominee James Cromwell), who senses that he and the pig share "a common destiny." Babe, a popular mischief-maker the Australian farm, is adopted by the resident border collie and raised as a puppy, befriended by Ferdinand the duck (who thinks he's a rooster), and saves the day as a champion "sheep-pig." Filled with a supporting cast of talking barnyard animals and a chorus of singing mice (courtesy of computer enhancements and clever animatronics), this frequently hilarious, visually imaginative movie has already taken its place as a family classic with timeless appeal. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars My kids LOVE this movie.......2007-06-08

This is a great movie. There are a few parts (the opening scene for one) that I would have expected my kids to be afraid, but they weren't. They may be too young to actually understand what was happening. My kids are 2 and 4. My 2 years old LOVES Babe. We've watched this movie a few tiimes now and its enjoyable for the whole family each time. We haven't gotten bored with it yet.

2 out of 5 stars Babe is fine - Universal ruins the DVD.......2007-05-17

When placing Babe in the DVD player I was not able to fast forward, jump to the main menu, etc. until _after_ all the movie previews on the DVD were played. My daughter actually stood in front of the TV and started to cry because she wanted the movie to start. Shame on Universal for ruining what is supposed to be a fun experience. I've paid for the DVD - I should have full control over what is shown and not be forced to watch yet more advertising. I'll be asking for my money back on this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-07

This was a great movie, and was shipped in a reasonable time, and was in great condition just as described. Would deffinately do business again.

5 out of 5 stars Animal movie for the whole family.......2007-02-26

A fun, heart-warming movie with a quirky twist. I really enjoyed this movie as a light-hearted look at life on a farm. It is suitable for all ages. It does not contain any bad language, sex or strong violence. The basic story premise speaks to the child in all of us and in my opinion is far superior than the sequel (Babe - Pig in the City). The performances by the artists and puppeteers from Jim Henson Creature Shop, the Animatronics robotic animals and the real animals are seamless. A big plus that the film was shot on location in Australia and used a lot of local talent. A movie one could see again and again and find new things to enjoy each time.

5 out of 5 stars "That'll do Pig... that'll do.".......2007-01-30

This is a most endearing Australian family film and one of my favorites by far. Babe is the new addition to Hogget's farm after being romoved from his mother and won by chance at the town fair by Mr. Hogget himself. There Babe learns his life lessons and, "the way things are" according to each animal along with his roll, purpose and supposed destiny on the Hogget farm. While being reared by Fly, part of Hogget's Sheep dog team, Babe takes an interest into changing his own destiny, which was nothing short of becomming Christmas dinner sooner or later.Farmer Hogget, noticing the pig's insistance in hearding and seperating animals decides to do something crazy and go with his gut. With Fly on the injured list and Rex not able to compete any longer, Hogget enters Babe into the "Sheep Dog" competion as nothing less than just "pig". This is a film which shows that nothing short of persistance, believing in one self and having a big heart will out weigh all the odds stacked against you. Children and adults of all ages will love this little Aussie fable right down to the ending leaving you with a smile on your face,a giggle in your own heart and a warm glow inside.

Description

Ken Burns tops himself with this epic of American history, told in "nine innings," with a skilled narration by John Chancellor and the voices of Paul Newman, Jason Robards, Billy Crystal, and other stars. The series spans 150 years, starting with the myth-debunking tale of baseball's true beginnings -- when it was a game "one degree above mayhem." Then follow the growth of America's National Pastime through the decades of glory and record-setting achievements, as well as the scandals, the bigotry, and the big money. The series portrays the game as a mirror of America itself -- the passions, prejudices, and ambitions that have shape the country.

Inning 9 1970 to 1994. Curt Flood looses his war against baseball but the players eventually win. The players union gets stronger. The Reds come to power. The A's win a couple world series. Roberto Clemente's life cut short. Washing looses another team called the Senators.

The film also has some great commentary interspersed through out all of the DVD's. At the end of each DVD is a trivia game based on the decade that the DVD covered.

While the movie is based for the most part on New ork teams this is truly a must for all baseball fans. There is no other collection of materials that covers baseball like this one does in terms of breadth and depth.

5 out of 5 stars At $161.99, it's worth more than every penny!.......2007-03-02

I haven't been nuts about the sport of baseball for decades, but I treasure every minute of information on the ten discs included in this offering. With the commencement of a new season only a couple of months away, it remains to be seen whether I'll ever become a real student of the game, but the perception of historic continuity provided by this documentary is more acutely, keenly expressed than anywhere else in my exprience. The intellectual connections made here are poetic, while the emotional bond it re-energizes is spellbinding and ecstatic.
An ideal companion to THE CIVIL WAR and JAZZ, BASEBALL explores the same American mysteries from an entirely different, supremely satisfying direction and no matter how high the price, it feels just like stealing home.

When people say, "They don't make them like they used to," Pride of the Yankees is just the kind of film they're wistfully remembering. Nominated for 11 Academy awards (winning one for film editing), this handsome biographical drama of baseball legend Lou Gehrig is one of the most finely crafted films ever to emerge from Hollywood. Gary Cooper, that great oak of an American actor, progresses from the awkward and naively shy rookie to the seasoned "Iron Horse" first baseman of the New York Yankees without losing his idealism or modesty. Teresa Wright captures the same slice of Americana with her mixture of girl-next-door sweetness and urban sophistication as his supportive wife, Eleanor. After he's diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disease (known today simply as Lou Gehrig's disease), Cooper delivers Gehrig's famous retirement speech from the mound of Yankee Stadium with the courage and spirit of a winner: "I consider myself to be the luckiest man on the face of the earth." One of the finest sports films ever made, Pride is about more than simply baseball: Gehrig, the hard-working, uncommonly talented son of immigrant parents, is the living embodiment of the American Dream. Walter Brennan and Dan Duryea costar as a Greek chorus of sportswriters, and real-life Yankees Bill Dickey, Mark Koenig, Bob Meusel, and Babe Ruth appear as themselves. --Sean Axmaker

Amazon.com

You'll be proud to introduce your kids to this film about virtue, courage, and an indomitable spirit. Like Treasure Island and Tom Sawyer, Pride should be required viewing for every family. Gary Cooper plays Lou Gehrig, the "Iron Horse" New York Yankee first baseman who became a record-setting legend in baseball. Sure, Cooper's a little long in the tooth to play a collegian, and he tries to capture Gehrig's innocence with a kind of eye-batting dopiness. But the last moments of the film, before Gehrig's final, famous farewell, transform the picture. Gehrig happens across a young man whom he had encountered years before in a children's hospital, and with this sequence, Pride becomes something more than a movie about innate talent and athleticism, or a lost era of America, it crystallizes into a film about (gulp!) human will. An absolute must. --Keith Simanton

Description

His talent made him a legend. His courage made him a hero. Gary Cooper is nothing short of wonderful (The Motion Picture Guide) in this moving true story of Lou Gehrig, the Hall-of-Fame ballplayer who reached the heights of stardom only to face tragedy with a dignity that inspired a nation. Nominated* for eleven Academy Awards(r), including Best Picture, The Pride of the Yankees is a glorious [and] inspiring (The Hollywood Reporter) sports classic. LouGehrig's boyhood dreams come true when he signs on with the New York Yankees and takes the field alongside his idol, Babe Ruth. In fact, Lou considers himself 'the luckiest man in the world until unthinkable misfortune strikes, and he must summon all his courage to face his toughest battle yet.

5 out of 5 stars Baseball memories..........2007-06-11

"The Pride of the Yankees" was an excellent movie. It will be especially interesting and enjoyable for those who love baseball and history of the players, as well. Thank you for shipping it so promptly and it was received in excellent condition.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD transer of Excellent Film!.......2007-05-16

Released in 1942, "Pride of the Yankees" came at a time when those on the home-front really needed a home-grown hero. Gary Cooper, direct from his success (and Oscar) as Sergeant York, here portrays Lou Gehrig with sensitivity and humor (earning an Oscar nomination). Teresa Wright was nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress that year (winning Supporting for "Mrs.Miniver"). There's excellent support from Walter Brennan and the real Babe Ruth. Sam Wood directed with a nostalgic hand, putting this film up there with the great films of the 40's, and one of the best sports films ever. By all means, check it out. There are no extras on this 65th Anniversary DVD, but the film is worth it.

1 out of 5 stars DVD Exactly the Same as Older Version - MGM Rip-Off!.......2007-04-06

As usual, MGM, which was a fine studio, puts out a mediocre DVD, trying to put one past the consumer. Don't be fooled. Let the reviewer from DVDBeaver speak for this "new" version:

"These MGM DVD editions are EXACTLY the same. The only difference is that the Anniversary Edition package offers a cardboard sleeve (funnily enough it doesn't even have new text - it is the same spiel written on the keep case insert). And for your trouble the Anniversary Edition is minutely more money ($0.20). In all fairness they should have just called this a re-issue instead of trying to fool the public - this DVD does nothing at all to celebrate the 65th Anniversary.

"The transfer that came out in 2002 is not bad at all - progressive and quite acceptable contrast. There are a few blemishes (speckles) but nothing to get riled up about. There are yellow optional subtitles and clear and consistent mono audio. No extras at all where to properly celebrate the 65 Anniversary you would think some video featurette or commentary would be called for. The film certainly deserves at least that.

"Wholesome good nostalgic fun that purports the virtues of courage and determination in a story of how one man and his quiet demeanour was able to touch so many with his gift. Yeah, they don't make'm like this anymore.

"All we have to say to MGM is 'not on DVDBeaver's watch'. A great reasonably priced DVD but obviously NO reason to double dip (as many would expect) and shame on MGM!"

4 out of 5 stars Old "Tanglefoot" ~ A True Baseball Legend.......2006-07-28

`Pride of the Yankees' released in '43 just 4 years after Lou Gehrigs bittersweet retirement is a loving, though overly sentimental tribute to the New York Yankee legend who died of what is now known as Lou Gehrigs' disease.

This is one of the most beloved sports films of all time. The scenes of Cooper on the baseball field, interacting with other players in the locker room, or traveling to away games on a train boxcar are the best parts of the movie. They are especially enjoyable because you get the rare opportunity to see the real Babe Ruth playing himself. However some of the romantic scenes with love interest Eleanor Twitchell (Teresa Wright) are really dated and overly sacrine, making them difficult to watch with a straight face.

If you're a baseball fan, or a Gary Cooper fan you'll overlook it's shortcomings. Still good for viewing if you're not such a fan. Also starring Walter Brennan.

5 out of 5 stars African American geniuses captured on film.......2007-02-11

I use this movie as a teaching tool in dance classes in public schools. It shows the roots of every dance form we practice today and proves the point that there is no such thing as a truly "American" form of dance. Tap and hip hop originated from African dance/drumming and how it was used in communication from one plantation to another to help one another escape. Katherine Dunham combined AFrican and CAribeean techniques to create well excuted and smart jazz and modern choreogrpahy. Calloway showed us he is the grandfather of hip hop vernacular, Lena Horne the queeen of style, Bill Robinson, a master craftsman and Fats Waller and Ada Brown true talents that were grown out of singing in churches and learning songs passed down from generation to generation. NO one surpasses the Nicholas Brothers in grace and style, and Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly openly admitted they were greatly influenced by them. Please note that there are other small appearances by Noble Sissle and other trailblazers in the film. If you are student and watching the film, notice the first dance scene about the cake walk - look it up and learn about its history. To me, this movie proves we are all one. Also, Amazon, please note that when you bring this up to pay it says it stars Eddie Rochester Anderson. It does not, he was the brilliant leading man in Cabin in the Sky.

5 out of 5 stars This picture will take you by storm!.......2006-12-22

The plot of this story might be thin about the fictionalized life of Bill `Mr. Bojangles' Robinson, and his on again/off again romantic relationship with a love interest but I found it to be one of the single most exhilarating films I've ever seen.

This all black film may not be a masterpiece in terms of its cinematic technique, but it captures more than a dozen performances, each of which can itself be termed a masterpiece. Horne rendition of "Stormy Weather" is singularly, powerfully erotic. Robinson is great and has several fantastic numbers (he's obviously getting old, but he still has a ton of energy). Many other great black performers grace the screen, among them Fats Waller Katherine Dunham, Ada Brown, and the Nicholas Brothers, who deliver a dance that equals anything either Astaire or Kelly accomplished. Dooley Wilson does not sing, but he has a very funny supporting role (the film delivers big time in laughs, including a very amusing blackface scene). As many hugely entertaining performances there are in the first three-quarters, the film shifts into high gear when Cab Calloway shows up. I absolutely love this guy, one of the weirdest and most original stylists that ever existed in America. But it's not just his appearance that ups the ante. The film has an amazing sense of pace, and it builds steadily to a musical finale which can only be described as orgasmic. It was thrilling to be able to see the talent actors and all the skills offered through their dancing and singing abilities. All of the dance numbers and costumes really represented the time period. The way the dancers moved were both creative and unique, especially indisputably impressive Nicholas Brothers.

"Stormy Weather" is a testament to black art of the first half of the 20th Century, and the achievements must not be forgotten. Twentieth Century Fox really broke the mold with this movie in response to FDR's urging. It finally gave actors of color the chance to show off their tremendous talent also allowing them to have more of an equal role in society. Although there still were laws restricting the interaction between whites and blacks in films, it certainly brought them out the repetitive demeaning roles of slaves and servants. This may very well be the best place to go if you want to discover them.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2006-12-22

I reccommend this DVD to everyone who loves classic movies. I bought this movie as a gift for my mother for Mother's Day. She was happy to add this movie to her collection.

5 out of 5 stars An American Treasure, and Personal Favorite.......2006-12-07

Imagine: no wires, no special effects, but some of the best stunts in the form of dance acts anywhere. For those of us interested in the music and dance of the era, this is an absolute must. For those of us interested in historical contexts, this is probably a bit skewed towards the brighter side of life, but you can clearly see the evolution of jazz and jazz dance from WWI to WWII. For those of you looking for great acting and a moving plot, you need to find it elsewhere, because this movie was basically put together from a number of vaudeville and specialty acts -- the very best of the time. For those of you willing to take a closer look, you might notice that the level of pure entertainment, the enchantment that these entertainers can cast over you, the audience member, is something not found in modern entertainment anymore, in this day of performing for television and movie cameras instead of a live audience.

How can you hate a movie that features ninja Siamese cats wreaking havoc with their kung fu prowess? That's one of the highlights in Cats & Dogs, an effects-laden family film that mystifies cat fanciers by casting dogs as the undisputed heroes in all-out warfare with nefarious felines. Hidden headquarters and high-tech gadgets are featured on both sides of this age-old battle. On the feline side, the longhaired Persian Mr. Tinkles (voice of Sean Hayes) plots to sabotage the efforts of Professor Brody (Jeff Goldblum) to discover a cure for human allergies to dogs. On the canine side, stalwart shepherd Butch (voice of Alec Baldwin) trains the mistakenly recruited beagle puppy Lou (voice of Tobey Maguire) to foil Mr. Tinkles's scheme--a mission that begins when Mrs. Brody (Elizabeth Perkins) adopts Lou for her son Scott (Alexander Pollock).

Using combinations of live animals, animatronic puppets, and digital wizardry, Cats & Dogs has just enough imagination to match its effects, climaxing with a feline global-domination scheme involving mice sprayed with chemicals that will make all humans allergic to dogs. Goldblum and Perkins gamely play second fiddles to this menagerie of mayhem, and as madcap "realism" gives way to cartoonish fantasy, the movie escalates into utter chaos, burdened by lame jokes but highlighted by a furry supporting cast including a Saluki hound (voice of Susan Sarandon), a shaggy sheepdog (voice of Michael Clarke Duncan), and a Chinese hairless techno-geek named Peek (voice of Joe Pantoliano). Though never as charming as the Babe movies, Cats & Dogs is harmless fun--especially for dog lovers. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Funny even for Mom and Dad.......2007-05-14

A great kids movie with good actors (Elizabeth Perkins and Jeff Goldblum). Obviously far fetched since there are animals that talk but really very funny even for adults!

5 out of 5 stars From Russia with Love.......2007-04-25

You can see other reviews for the general plotline, but I'd like to give a hearty second to the idea that this movie is fun for the whole family.

My wife and I love it. My 8-year old loves it, and my 2-year old loves it. There are many subtleties you can catch upon multiple viewings, which is a good thing as my daughters like to watch this movie over and over. There are many great one-liners and performances, but "The Russian" is easily my favorite character. Sean Hayes is also awesome as "Mr. Tinkles".

Great dvd and was delievered to me quickly and in great condition, thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Who Rules and Who Drools?.......2007-02-12

This is a fun flick to watch for all ages. Comical yarn about supposed secret war between canines and felines for control of the owner population. In the middle is an unsuspecting scientist looking for cure for dog allergies, and the replacement dog for his family, an unsuspecting beagle.

Fun to watch. Delighted to hear that families like to watch multiple times. Kids of all ages who like their humor without the sordid language and violence problems will enjoy this one.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible and misleading........2007-01-27

I saw this movie in theaters when I was 9 because it seemed like a cute story: Cats and dogs in a fight with each other to take over the world. BOY were those commercials misleading. Even back then, I HATED all of those stupid cats and dogs and race cliches. You don't know how tired I am of seeing evil siamese cats that look asian and have funny accents. I would never want my children watching this garbage. It'll just teach them how to hate cats and make fun of asians and russians. There was no humor in it either. None of the jokes were funny.

Sometimes simplicity can be heartbreaking. So it is with The Clock, a wonderfully simple love story that stands as one of the gems of the MGM golden years. It should be noted right off that this 1945 film is not a musical, despite a talent roster led by the maestro of MGM musicals, producer Arthur Freed. Rather, it's a straight, black and white romance about a soldier (Robert Walker) with a two-day pass in unfamiliar, overwhelming New York City. He meets an office worker (Judy Garland), and in the glow of the city and each other, they fall in love. Underlying the sweetness of the romance is the time limit of the soldier's leave, after which he will be sent overseas; the clock brings an urgency to the action, especially after the lovers lose each other in the crush of a subway. Veteran character actor James Gleason provides lovely support, as does his real-life wife, Lucile. Director Vincente Minnelli brought his designer's eye to the film, turning (by his own avowed intention) New York City itself into the third main character in the drama. It's not difficult to guess the reason for the film's strong emotional tug, or for Judy Garland's radiance; Minnelli had fallen in love with Garland during the making of Meet Me in St. Louis a year earlier, and they would marry after filming The Clock. She was never lovelier than in these two pictures. --Robert Horton

Description

Soldier Joe Allen is on a two-day leave in New York, and there he meets Alice. She agrees to show him the sights and they spend the day together. In this short time they find themselves falling in love with each other, and they decide to get married before Joe has to return to camp.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Clock.......2007-06-25

Minnelli's sentimental, spirited and touching wartime romance was a small picture by MGM standards, but Garland's star power and the backdrop of bustling Manhattan (actually Hollywood sound stages) give the picture a dynamic, worldly feel. Walker is likable as the earnest hayseed, and doe-eyed Garland is grand as ever without once singing a tune. (Minnelli, of course, married Judy as soon as the film wrapped!) Great support work from James and Lucille Gleason as a milkman and wife round out this sweet film about love on a very tight schedule.

3 out of 5 stars Not as wonderful as I'd hoped........2007-05-30

This movie, only now out on DVD, does not impress me as a classic. It's slow. The writing is adequate. The characters are not that engaging. It's not baaad. It's just nothing to write home about.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Classic Film by the great Minnelli.......2007-05-01

I thought I had seen all of Vincente Minnelli's greatest films, well, I was so wrong... 'The Clock' is truly comparable to his great 'Meet Me in St. Louis', 'Gigi', 'The Band Wagon'... He has so many great classics, but I believe this one may be his third best.

As it starts you don't expect anything great: an aerial view of New York, Central Station, lots of people going on their daily routines... it goes increscendo though. And how! This is the romantic story of a young soldier (Robert Walker) in 1945 who has a couple of free days to spend in NYC before returning to serve in the Army (probably to go to England). He's never been in the big city before but he will meet a girl (Judy Garland) who will show him around. Love is in the making meanwhile, but there's only 2 days to spend. What can happen in two days? Well, that's exactly what they both are thinking too, while watching at the "clock" to see how much time is left for them together (more rapport between the characters and the viewers is hardly possible).

I say this film is perfect because it looks so simple, its story, its characters... it must be really difficult to tell when there's not that much plot going on. But the viewer gets so involved with these young couple that he won't have time to blink. I mean, every second of film is purposeful, meaningful, and beautiful. You can't do more with less. That's why Minnelli is one of the greatest American directors, comparable to Ford, Hawks, Vidor... Personally, it took me some minutes to forget Robert Walker's role in 'Strangers on a train', which left an indelible impression on me. He wouldn't be my first choice at all for this role, but he is fine. A must see classic.

5 out of 5 stars The Clock.......2007-04-08

They just don't make movies like this any more. I enjoyed it and the fact that Judy did not sing in the movie reinforces the nature of the love story. In other words you are not put aside listening to music instead of concentrating on the love between two people. If you never saw this movie, you do not know what you are missing.

5 out of 5 stars The Clock - Great Movie.......2007-04-04

This is a great movie for any JudyGarland fan out there. I was happy to add this one to my collection!

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Films in One!.......2006-10-15

BABE THE GALLANT PIG
A touching fable abuout a pig who wants to be a sheep dog.
BABE, PIG IN THE CITY
An imaginative, funny and moving film that completely lives up to the original.

The ''character animation'' in both movies is excellent, the animal's mouthes move seamlessly and smoothly, their voices are perfectly suited to their parts, and their personalities are colorful and engaging. Too bad they didn't make a Babe three.

5 out of 5 stars Babe Family Double Feature.......2006-07-08

Babe is a shy piglet who discovers he can be anything
he wants to be. He meets Farmer Hoggett and a barnyard
full of interesting animals. With the help of his friends,
Babe is headed for the challenge of his life when he goes
to the city to get money to save the farm.

Overall, it is a great and really cute movie that is
perfect for anybody that loves animals.

4 out of 5 stars very endearing.......2006-02-25

Babe was purchased for my toddler (and me). It is a great family movie in that multiple generations can watch it multiple times, without really getting sick of it - and the charm of the movie doesn't die. We haven't watched 'Pig in the City' yet.
The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is the very annoying advertisements at the start of the movie - you can fast forward through them but not skip them entirely - this is NOT a winning strategy! At the very least they should be more carefully chosen - Johnny English is not appropriate for toddlers. Once you know it is there it is easy to by-pass.

4 out of 5 stars Well Done!.......2007-05-14

The Babe is a great baseball movie with a few flaws, mostly in the embellishment of the true facts, but it's miles better than the 1948 movie with William Bendix as the Babe. John Goodman gives his all as he portrays Babe Ruth, a man who enjoyed life a little too much. Other strong performances are given by Kelly McGillis, James Cromwell & Bruce Boxleitner. I recommend this film.

4 out of 5 stars Well done.......2007-04-04

John Goodman's role is so realistic that I thought I was seeing the Babe many times! He is outstanding in his role as Babe Ruth. Hollywoood liberties, sure ...... but an excellent story and a look at an Baseball hero ........... A must for baseball fans.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Baseball Movie........2006-08-10

A highly enjoyable baseball movie. John Goodman give a good potrayal of the famous slugger. From his rookie year with the Boston Red Sox,the New York Yankees, and his retirement from the Boston Braves.Watch how he responds to a bad call from the plate umpire, saying he ought to get his eyes and ears checked.Babe Ruth was a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox,and in his last year with the Boston Braves, but played outfield with the New York Yankess. Now maybe the film exaggerates the antics of Ruth, but Goodman's potrayal makes them beliveable.

2 out of 5 stars too close to a caricature.......2006-05-11

Be advised that after 45 minutes of the movie my 8 year-old son and I gave up. Goodman seems to have been given the license to "go for broke" with a "larger than life" approach, that leaves little for the viewer to consider of Ruth's actual life. With the broadest of strokes, Goodman plays Ruth self-consciously; the mis-en-scenes are without any surprises and Hollywood-predictable.

Too little was shown to give us the sense of Ruth-as-athlete and the milieu of early 20th century baseball, a fascinating story that awaited telling but missed the opportunity here.

3 out of 5 stars Good baseball movie, but not what it should have been.......2006-03-21

Probably the most famous baseball player of all-time, Babe Ruth should definitely have had a movie done about him, and "The Babe" is a decent effort, but is not without flaws. First, there are many inaccuracies in this movie, but I won't go into that too deep. At the end of the movie (1936), The Babe is spitting up blood during the game between the Braves and the Pirates, but Ruth did not pass away from cancer until 1948. Certainly Ruth did not have cancer in 1936.. There's many other things, but I don't need to list them all.

But the thing that really bothered me about this movie is that Ruth is portrayed as nothing more than a bumbling idiot while he was with the Red Sox. While this is good for a few laughs, it really took away from my enjoyment of the first half of the movie. I'm thinking "THIS guy is Babe Ruth??" However, as soon as Ruth is sold to the Yankees, he becomes much more intelligent and doesn't act like a complete dumba$$ all of the time. At this point, the movie takes a much more serious turn, and in my opinion, the last half of the movie is EXCELLENT. The film delves into the Babe's issues both on and off the field, and definitely has some touching moments, and a strong finish to the movie. Too bad the first half of the movie was so silly.. So overall, 1 star for the first half of the movie, 5 stars for the second half, for a final score of 3 stars.

I thought that John Goodman was very good as The Babe, although yes, he was much larger (weight) than Babe Ruth really was at any point in his life, but let's not get hung up on details. Goodman was a good fit for the part, and Kelly McGillis was excellent in the supporting role of Claire Hudson.

All of that said, if you're a true baseball historian, you will find plenty to complain about with "The Babe", but if you just want a fun baseball movie to watch, then I would definitely recommend it. I would hope that someday a movie is made about Babe Ruth that is more historically accurate, and has a much more grand feel like the movie 61*, because this telling of Babe Ruth's life just isn't quite the home run that it should have been.

Reel Baseball is an outstanding collection from Kino of baseball-themed films from the silent era of American cinema. The two-disc set is anchored by an unexpected and enjoyable 1920 feature, "Headin' Home," starring a boyish and slender Babe Ruth in a silly but vibrant piece of fiction about the roots of the legendary player. Portrayed as a hayseed essentially waiting to be discovered, Ruth never looked or performed (as an actor) better than in this expertly paced farce. He re-tools his own legend, playing some version of himself as a rough diamond recruited into playing against his own hometown team and doing well enough to be nearly lynched. The other long production here is the ambitious "The Busher," from 1919, starring Charles Ray as another rural talent fetched up by a visiting team and spat out when he can't get his head in a big league game. Roaming anonymously in the aftermath of his failure, Ray's character comes home ragged and beaten, but baseball has a way of extending opportunities for redemption.

Elsewhere in the collection are a number of short pieces, some of them fragments or excerpts, others complete. Among the highlights is a wonderful Felix the Cat cartoon, "Felix Saves the Day," a funny, mixed-media work in which the darkly mischievous Felix proves an adept pitcher and hitter in street games, then loses a valuable teammate when the latter is thrown in jail. For all its relative simplicity, there are some surprising and delightful moments, including a hilarious chase scene in which animated characters are running amok over real-world buildings somehow excerpted from a photograph. "Kinogram" is a one-minute, undated strip of footage of Ruth in his Yankees uniform. "His Last Game" is an amusing if somewhat tawdry comedy from 1909, about an Indian pitcher trying to resist the temptations of demon alcohol, bribes, and gambling prior to a big game. "The Ball Player and the Bandit," from 1912, is directed by Francis Ford and is a slightly convoluted tale about a ball player who refuses to carry a gun while working as a paymaster out west. The oldest film segment here, the 1899 "Casey at the Bat or The Fate of a `Rotten' Umpire," is a fascinating few seconds of a home plate brawl from a larger project. Another "Casey at the Bat," from 1922, is simply a showcase for actor De Wolf Hopper to recite—as he did for years—the famous, eponymous poem. Finally, "Butter Fingers" is an irresistible, Mack Sennett comedy starring Billy Bevan as a loutish pitcher with some magic hands but bad judgement when it comes to wooing the ladies. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgic small town baseball from a long ago era.......2007-05-04

Baseball fans of all ages will probably greatly enjoy the labor of love, REEL BASEBALL, 1899-1926, which runs over four hours on two disks. But devotees of small town America before World War One and later during the Jazz Age, may love it even more. It's a valentine to the America that was, when baseball was played on vacant lots in small towns and whole towns went to a game at the local stadium.

Disk One starts with a shockingly thin Babe Ruth in HEADIN' HOME (1920), which is a 73 minute feature about Babe leaving his town for the big city and success, then returning home at the end. It is followed by a 1 minute Kinogram with The Babe, the 12 minute HIS LAST GAME (1909), and the 12 minute THE BALL PLAYER AND THE BANDIT (1912), starring someone named Harold Lockwood. I should note that this entire set is all silent, with a variety of music scores that range from gramophone to piano to Wurlitzer organ. Print sources include Film Preservation Associates, Lobster Films in Paris, and the Library of Congress. The films have been magnificently preserved.

Disk Two is long and may play better in two sittings. It starts with a 55 minute baseball and romance feature called THE BUSHER (1919), starring Charles Ray, Colleen Moore, and John Gilbert. There are two versions of CASEY AT THE BAT--a 1 minute short from 1899 and a 6 minute experimental sound recitation by DeWolf Hopper from 1922. HOW THE OFFICE BOY SAW THE BALL GAME (1906) runs 5 minutes as an excerpt. ONE TOUCH OF NATURE (1917) is an 18 minute excerpt that seems complete. Those who remember rotund comic John Bunny will love the 33 minute HEARTS AND DIAMONDS (1914). FELIX SAVES THE DAY (1922) is a 7 minute animation and live action cartoon that is great fun. BUTTER FINGERS (1925) stars Billy Bevan (who had a long screen career into the 1940s) and runs 16 minutes. And we finish off with HAPPY DAYS (1926) at 14 minutes.

Notice that a lot of these silent shorts do not have big name stars. Baseball in its many forms is the star in these nostalgic films from a lovely, long ago era when the sport was still great fun, something a whole town turned out to see, and gambling was not yet part of the game. I highly recommend this Kino blockbuster, especially to an older audience that may remember some of these players and remember small town baseball fondly.

5 out of 5 stars A Home Run for Silent Film Lovers Who Are Also Baseball Fans.......2007-05-02

A delightful collection of 2 features and 11 shorts, all but one silent with appropriate and effective musical scores, from the fine folks at Kino, who help keep silent film lovers happy with regular release of pre-talkie goodies! (The lone talkie item here is an early experiment in sound presenting the stage actor DeWolf Hopper presenting a recitation of "Casey at the Bat." This was one of the highlights for me - I really enjoyed the actor's totally over the top performance (he was clearly aware of what he was up to, and having a good time doing it!) The other titles on the two disc set provide straight dramas, comedies, westerns(!), and more.

Babe Ruth's feature is pretty incredible in plot, but entertaining none-the-less, and the Babe doesn't strike out with his acting, which is appealing if a bit lacking in theatrical polish. Charles Ray, Colleen Moore and John (here Jack) Gilbert offer a good introduction to a type of silent film that was very popular - it might be called a "small town boy makes good, before he goes bad, before he learns what's best for him" movie.

Another reviewer complained that the films had too little baseball content - perhaps he should just buy a box set of some historic World Series and forget about dramatic and comedic presentations. While the baseball content of many of the films is lower than THE NATURAL or PRIDE OF THE YANKEES, baseball is at the thematic core of all these films, although more prominent in some than others. I love old movies and baseball and didn't feel a bit cheated.

Sign me up for REEL BASEBALL II!

1 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointing.......2007-04-29

Most of the short subjects in this collection have little, if anything, to do with baseball. You'll watch them, as my family did, wondering where the baseball is. And when you see it, you'll wonder if the people who created this collection are kidding. (Two minutes of lousy baseball footage in a 12-minute film does NOT make a baseball movie.) The quality of the films is substandard, even for silents, and the newly recorded organ music is nauseating. The only thing even vaguely entertaining about this collection is how bad it is. Some movies are meant never to be seen ever again, unless you happen to be a film student or an archivist. From a consumer's standpoint, I consider this collection a complete waste of money.

4 out of 5 stars The Old Ball Game........2007-04-08

Being a film historian, a silent film enthusiast, and an avid baseball fan, this set was tailor made for me and I eagerly awaited its release since Kino first announced it. Perhaps it was the keen anticipation or maybe I've become spoiled by recent silent film releases but I was somewhat disappointed by this set at first but it quickly grew on me. Part of the reason had to do with the fact that I watched the shorter material first saving the two features for last. I found the visual quality of HIS LAST GAME, THE BALL PLAYER AND THE BANDIT, BUTTER FINGERS, and CASEY AT THE BAT to be below the standards usually set by Kino. Most are from 16mm transfers which cut the tops off the pictures and have serious contrast issues while the source prints on a couple are really beat up. A number of these prints come from the Library of Congress which means that they are probably all that's available but a little restoration work would have been nice. FELIX SAVES THE DAY is battered in places but this is the best looking version I've ever come across. Moving on to the longer works the quality gets a lot better. It was especially nice to see HEARTS AND DIAMONDS from 1914 which would be one of the last efforts of the Falstaffian sized John Bunny (he died in 1915) once the most popular film comedian in the world. When he enters the ball park it's clear the fans are cheering him for who he is. This and the two features make the entire 2 DVD set more than worthwhile. The completely fictionalized HEADIN' HOME shows Babe Ruth in 1920 when he was still very athletic although there is not as much baseball action here as you would expect. Ruth has a natural ability before the camera which was later used to good advantage in other movies such as PRIDE OF THE YANKEES. THE BUSHER is one of the few surviving features of ill-fated movie pioneer Thomas H. Ince and stars Charles Ray, Colleen Moore and a young John Gilbert. The print quality on both is very good and THE BUSHER even has its original florid intertitles. The newly recorded organ and piano music by three different performers makes for a proper accompaniment to the various offerings. Overall I'm glad to have this set and recommend it not only to lovers of silent film but to social historians and to baseball fans as well. It's absolutely fascinating to see how they did things differently so long ago and invariably a little sad when you see a simpler time that has gone for good.
