The popular children's books by Mary Norton have been filmed before, but never with as much imagination and ingenuity as you'll find on display in this delightful fantasy film released to critical praise in 1998. The "Borrowers" of the title are a family of tiny people who live in the walls and under the floorboards in the homes of "normal-sized" humans; they earn their by "borrowing" the household items (string, food crumbs, buttons, etc.) needed to furnish their tiny hiding places and provide their meals. The little Clock family lives happily undisturbed in the home of an aged aunt, but when the aunt dies and her will is stolen by an unscrupulous lawyer (John Goodman), the Clocks face eviction and the frightening hazards of the outside world. Under the ingenious direction of Peter Hewitt, this simple, straightforward movie mixes comedy, adventure, and suspense with some of the cleverest special effects you've ever seen, taking full advantage of effects technologies to immerse you in the world of the tiny people. A climactic chase scene in a milk-bottling plant is a visual tour de force, and the movie's smart and dazzling enough to entertain parents and children alike. After its modest success in theaters, The Borrowers stands a good chance of becoming a home-video favorite. --Jeff Shannon

The Borrowers--Good entertainment.......2007-05-09
If you have a cold, rainy Saturday afternoon, and everyone's sitting around looking dejected and bored, here's what you do. Make a huge bowl of popcorn, drag out the old blankets and make a tent on floor in front of the TV. Pop in "The Borrowers," and snuggle with each other.
It's a wonderful movie with just enough good-guys-and-bad-guys, suspense, adventure, and laughter for all ages.
The Borrowers are little people. Really little. About the size of mice, really. They live in the walls and under the floors of a house, co-existing with humans who never can figure out where stuff goes missing. The humans are being evicted by a greedy bad guy (a lawyer) who wants to make a condominium. The Borrowers take an interest and help the humans to save their home.
Great fun for everyone! I highly recommend "The Borrowers."

This is a good movie and it came very quick.
Disappointed.......2006-11-10
I had read The Borrowers in a magazine installment with my Great Grandmother. Then, I could hardly wait for the next month's magazine installment to arrive. I then reread the books with my daughter [who is now 32 years old] when she was about 12 years old. We wanted to share this DVD of The Borrowers with her son, my 4 year old grandson. That is why I purchased this item. We FORCED ourselves to watch almost half of the DVD, and then we all said, "Yes, let's shut it off." And we haven't watched any more of it. This new version is very contrived, with not much connection to the original story! I would like to perhaps buy a copy of the old original version sometime, but this version has soured me for a while on The Borrowers.
wonderful tale.......2006-03-19
This is a wonderful interpertation of the book. Very entertaining. My only complaint is the muted lighting but that is minor. Acting, costumes, excellent.
borrowers review.......2005-10-15
The borrower is a good movie I think it is cool to watch. It is about tiny people that borrower from humans. They aren't supposed to be seen and a young boy tries to find out why his things go missing. It is good because you can watch it over and over again and not get board.

Winter People is Choice.......2007-01-24
I have loved this movie for years, but could not find it either. I've watched it twice since it arrived.... Thank you
Wonderful adaptation of novel.......2006-03-28
Based on a novel written by one of many talented, North Carolina writers, this is a wonderful adaptation. Part of the movie was filmed in Avery County, not all that far from where I live...beautiful country. It is the heartbreaking story of a young love that can't be embraced because of an old family fued. When Kurt Russel enters the area, he finds himself falling in love with a woman who must keep the father of her illegitimate child a secret, and this secret turns out to be dangerous after an accidental death. You'll want to watch it more than once to fully take in the beautiful scenery.

I cried and cried and cried..........2006-01-16
I saw this movie on an airplane many years ago on a four hour flight... I cried and cried, and it seemed like everybody that watched the movie on the airplane was also crying... I loved this movie... It seems to me I have never seen Kelly McGillis in a better movie than this one... but I never saw it being shown in any movie house, and never found it for rent or sale... Today, maybe 15 years after I saw the movie, I remembered the title of the film and decided to look it up on Amazon to see if I can buy it... and I found it, at last! (of course I am going to buy it.) This is truly a beautiful movie. I can't understand how it was never shown in movie houses near me. If you like movies that truly move you to the bones, this is the one.
Quiet film about give and take, forgiveness and love........2003-01-08
A period story set in the North Carolina hills in what appears to be a place right smack dab in the middle of the Hatfields and McCoys--this time Wrights and Campbells. A shy sensitive widowed clock maker, Wayland Jackson, played by Kurt Russell on his way through the mountains with his only daughter becomes stuck in a creek and ends up sticking around for longer than he bargained. There he meets the elusive Collie Wright (Kelly McGillis's character) who with her only son seems to be living alone off from the small town. Immediately you sense a spark between the two but as the story progresses you realize there is a dark looming secret which threatens both lives. It appears Ellie's family has an ancient hatred that runs deep for their neighbors and would shootem' just as look at'em. Enter dark loomy character which is the babe's father and he's from the other side of the mountain. He is the exact opposite of our shy clock maker and Ellie knows this. Perhaps when some see the performances as cheesy or over acted they've never actually met any mountain folk, and thusly are insistent that the histrionics are over played. If you have been to the mountains and can feel the spirit of them then I think you will love this picture. It is about the give and take, the act of forgiveness and of course true love.
Realistic Yet Fascinating.......2002-04-08
I loved this film. It always appealed to me each and every time I viewed it. If you're in the mood for getting in touch with all your emotions, this movie is a MUST! McGillis and Russell are brilliant actors; there's no question about that.

Cecil B. DeMille's important first film.......2006-09-09
"The Squaw Man" may be billed as a silent classic for reasons such as being one of the first feature-length films (80 minutes to be exact) to be made in Southern California, as well as its huge success at the time, and consequently marking the start of Cecil B. DeMille's directing and filmmaking career. Full length feature films were already being made in Europe and the East Coast of America in the early 1910s, and many of them were probably better in various ways than "The Squaw Man", but DeMille's first attempt at filmmaking nevertheless showed great potential, and it is still entertaining and interesting to watch in our day. Credit must be given to Oscar Apfel, however, who was hired as an experienced director for "The Squaw Man" since DeMille had had only some stage acting, writing and producing experience until that time. DeMille was officially the Director General and it is believed he supervised and did most of the editing for "The Squaw Man". There are no DeMille trademarks yet to be seen in this film, but the many outdoor action scenes are not bad at all, and the overall fast pace of the film packs a lot of adventure into 80 minutes. The story is based on a popular play which audiences were familiar with in the early 1900s, and it might help viewers today to know a little about the plot in advance because some scenes are quite short, and with not many intertitles it takes a bit of effort to keep up with the story and figure out what's happening at first. Nevertheless, after viewing "The Squaw Man" a second time, I was able to follow the plot and enjoy the misadventure of an English nobleman forced to leave his home when framed by his cousin for stealing money from a Widows and Orphans fund. He arrives in America and soon finds himself the owner of a cattle ranch in Wyoming and married to a squaw who saves his life by killing the town's troublemaker. This murder remains unsolved for several years, however, during which time the cousin in England makes a dying confession. The story must have been so popular that DeMille chose to remake "The Squaw Man" not once, but twice: first in 1918 and then as an early sound film in 1931. In this first 1914 version there are great outdoor scenes of plains and even snow and mountains which were said to be in Wyoming and Arizona at the time of the film's release, but in fact everything was filmed in Southern California. Like most productions of this time, "The Squaw Man" lacks the smoothness and sophistication of silent films made in the mid to late 1920s, but for those of us who find pre-1920 films somehow more fascinating and fulfilling, I can certainly recommend this film. It has survived in very good condition, and even on this budget label the picture quality is not too bad at all, and it is helped along nicely by a good and somewhat less traditional piano score. Needless to say, this is a must-have for all serious DeMille fans as well as anyone interested in the early work of one of the great pioneers of the American film industry.
